Sucking In The Seventies (Limited Edition) [Digipak]
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Ron Wood (guitar, background vocals); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards, Ron Wood (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass guitar); Charlie Watts (drums, percussion). SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES is something of a companion piece to the 10-track compilation MADE IN THE SHADE. Both albums were released on Rolling Stones Records, and mixed hits and album tracks from the 1970s catalogue of the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band. Whereas SHADE focuses on the group's early-'70s albums (including STICKY FINGERS and EXILE ON MAIN STREET), SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES attends to the later '70s, which saw the release of BLACK AND BLUE (the record that introduced Ron Wood to the lineup) and SOME GIRLS. This era saw the Stones changing their profile as a fierce, hard-edged rock band by incorporating more elements of reggae, funk, disco, and smooth R&B. These changes can be heard in the shuffling groove of "Everything Is Turning to Gold," the push-pull funk of "Hot Stuff," and the languid sway of "Beast of Burden." The moody ballad "Fool to Cry" and the eminently memorable ode to New York City life "Shattered" are two of the highlights. Though "Miss You,"one of the band's biggest hits of the time, is curiously absent, SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES is an enjoyable dose of late-'70s Stones. (Note: Virgin re-released the collection in 2005 with remastered and remixed tracks.) SKU: 6587193

Electric Ladyland
The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar, bass); Noel Redding (vocals, bass); Mitch Mitchell (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Chris Wood (flute); Freddie Smith (tenor saxophone); Al Kooper (piano); Mike Finnigan, Steve Winwood (organ); Jack Casady (bass); Buddy Miles (drums); Larry Faucette (congas). Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968. Originally released on Reprise. Includesliner notes by Derek Taylor. On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)." Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on the chitlin' circuit (Earl King's "Come On [Part 1]"), a Bob Dylan favorite ("All Along The Watchtower"), and one of his snappiest singles ("Crosstown Traffic"). Although Hendrix produced and wrote most of this masterpiece, others weighed in with their own contributions. Noel Redding penned "Little Miss Strange," and other guests such as Al Kooper and Buddy Miles showed up to play. Traffic's Steve Winwood and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane also made cameos, appearing on this classic album's spiritual center, "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)." SKU: 3100292

South Park - Bigger Longer And Uncut
"Blame Canada" was nominated for the 1999 Academy Award For Best Song. It was inevitable a feature film based on the hilarious animated show SOUTH PARK would be made. It was also inevitable that the movie would produce an equally sidesplitting soundtrack. Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny, and the whole South Park gang sing their hearts out in the tradition of the Hollywood musical-but with all the raw, shocking bathroom humor that has made the show such a hit withits devoted viewers. Things naturally can get a bit rough in the language department, so this disc is not for the faint of heart. But that's the fun of it, right? All of the movie's big musical numbers are here, including the opening "Mountain Town," "Blame Canada," and "What Would Brian Boitano Do." Even such characters as Mr. Mackey, Terrance and Phillip, Satan, and Saddam Hussein get their own hysterical spotlight cuts. Also featured are songs by such artists as Nappy Roots, Joe C. featuring Kid Rock, and RuPaul. These were not included in the film, but they are certain to entertain SOUTH PARK fans. A rocking version of "O Canada"--by Rush's Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, along with the flatulent Terrance and Phillip--brings the production to an uproarious end. SKU: 1018126

Up
R.E.M.: Michael Stipe (vocals, guitar); Peter Buck (guitar); Mike Mills (bass). Additional personnel: Jere Flint (conductor); Jun-Ching Lin, David Arenz, David Braitberg, Willard Shull, Sou-Chun Su, Ellie Arenz, Jay Christy, Anne Page, Helen Porter (violin); Paul Murphy, Reid Harris, Heidi Nitchie, Patti Gouvas (viola); Daniel Laufer, Elizabeth Murphy, Christopher Rex, Nan Maddox (cello); Douglas Sommer (acoustic bass); Barrett Martin, Joey Waronker (drums); Scott McCaughey, Bruce Kaphan, John Keane. Engineers: Peter Buck, Charlie Francis, John Keane. Principally recorded at La Casa Del Elefante, Seattle, Washington; Toast, San Francisco, California; John Keane Studios, Athens, Georgia; Tree Sound Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. The departure of drummer Bill Berry in 1997 no doubt unsettled his former R.E.M.-mates, who found themselves straddling not only creative, but personal crossroads. Rather than giving up, the remaining members of R.E.M. reinvented themselves and released UP, a stunning, eloquent album of dark vulnerability and experimentalism. The emotional disquiet Stipe evokes is nearly shocking in its plainspoken lyricism. Songs like the agonized "Sad Professor" and the wary, hypnotic "Suspicion" seem almost too naked for Stipe, who spent years cloaking his words in mumbles and misnomers. Forthe first time, lyrics are even included in the packaging. "Hope" is a breathless, galloping piece of pseudo-electronica that raises the ghost of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" before ending in a heady roar of noise. The gorgeous jangle of "At My Most Beautiful" is pure poetry, an unabashed disclosure of Buck's giddy reverence for Brian Wilson. Although a drum machine is used at times (Beck drummer Joey Waronker and Tuatara percussionist Barrett Martin also guest on many tracks), an array of disparate sounds, from vibes to violin, infuses the songs with a newfound expressiveness. UP is unlike any other album in the band's long catalogue--a bold, brilliant spark of musical genius and genuine empathetic revelation. SKU: 1006605

Nashville Skyline [SACD]
This is a stereo hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar); Kenny Buttrey, Charles McCoy, Pete Drake, Norman Blake, Charlie Daniels, Bob Wilson, Johnny Cash. Includes liner notes by Johnny Cash. All tracks have been digitally remastered. It is hard to recall now how deeply unfashionable country music was in 1969-- Dylan's label, Columbia, dismayed at his apparent retrogression, begged him to remove the word NASHVILLE from the album's title. However, as usual, he proved ahead of the game; his embrace of country ushered in Gram Parsons, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and scores of subsequent artists under the Americana banner. Prescient too was his nod to JohnnyCash, with whom he duets on the gorgeous "Girl From The North Country." Buoyed by an altered, near-crooning vocal style, most of the tracks are pleasant and enduring; the chart hit "Lay Lady Lay" remains one of Dylan's most engaging songs. SKU: 1086939

Ultimate Collection, The
The Jackson 5: Michael Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, Tito Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Jackie Jackson (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Monty Seward (keyboards, programming). Producers include: Freddie Perren, Alphonso Mizell, Berry Gordy, Deke Richards, Hal Davis. Compilation producer: Dana G. Smart. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. This is part of the Motown Master Series. All of the tracks on THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION are taken from the Jackson 5 box-set SOULSATION!: THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION (Motown 530 489), except "It's Your Thing (The J5 In '95 Extended Remix)." Busting out ofGary, Indiana in 1968, the Jackson Five became a phenomenally successful crossover group for Motown Records. Their four consecutive Number One records, "I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save," and "I'll Be There," are all included here. With matching psychedelic outfits, a compelling blend of commercial soul and funk, and Michael Jackson's heartfelt homage to Jackie Wilson's stylings, they were top sellers throughout the early '70s. This collection covers only the Motown years (a second rebirth as the Jacksons occurred when they switched labels to Epic in 1976), but it's rich in their early brilliance. A shaking cover of the Isley Brothers' hit "It's Your Thing" shows just how funky the boys can get. The group's many hits, such as "Mama's Pearl," "Maybe Tomorrow," and "Sugar Daddy," produced by Berry Gordy and the four man writing/producing team known as The Corporation, are also featured. The nascent stirrings of Michael's solo career are represented by "Got to Be There" and "Rockin' Robin." Also noteworthy is 1974's "Dancing Machine," a precursor to the boys' more blatant disco excursions. Jammed with 21 hit songs and 74 minutes of music, THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION is a must-own. Delusions Of Grandeur
Fleming & John: Fleming McWilliams, John Mark Painter (vocals, guitar); Stan Rawls (bass); Shawn McWilliams (drums). Additional personnel: Ben Folds (drums). The Nashville-based duo of Fleming McWilliams (vocals) and John Mark Painter (everything else) can't seem to make up its mind. Is it an Alanis-style alt-rock act? Are Fleming and John dramatic balladeers?Kitschy retroists? Quirky popsters? Slaves to the rhythm? The answer, of course, is all of the above and more. The pairing's debut, DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR, skips blithely from genre to genre, held together only by the musicians' obvious pop smarts and devotion to this kind of variety. Painter's varied and skillful arrangements and production are coupled with McWilliams' somewhat skewed lyrical viewpoint, both keeping the album from sounding too scattershot. DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR has an admirable try-anything-once spirit sadly lacking in the increasingly by the numbers pop scene of the late-'90s. Pop fans may already be familiar with McWilliams and Painter, as they collaborated with Ben Folds on his 1998 project, FEAR OF POP, VOLUME ONE. SKU: 1017626

Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
Personnel: Alanis Morissette (vocals, harmonica, flute, piano); Glen Ballard (guitar, piano, synthesizer, programming); Nick Lashley, Joel Shearer (guitar); Benmont Tench (organ, chamberlin); Chris Chaney (bass); Gary Novak (drums, percussion); Shad T. Scott, Christopher Fogel (programming); Dash Mihok (loop). Engineers: Christopher R. Fogel, Glen Ballard. Recorded at Royaltone Studios, Los Angeles, California. "Thank U" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Alanis has a lot to answer for; in the process of changing the face of '90s pop music, she opened the door to scores of inferior imitators who crowded the charts with their transparent careerist fury. What theymissed was the renegade spirit that lurks beneath Morissette's statements off vengeance and dissatisfaction. It's that spirit that enlivens INFATUATION JUNKIE. From awkward title to the unconventional lyrical construction, it's clear that the years between this album and Morisette's previous breakthrough recording have not dulled her iconoclasm or put soft edges on her anger. INFATUATION JUNKIE is at once more immediate and more artfully constructed than its predecessor. Songs like "Baba" are full of thrusting guitars and sledgehammer rhythms, but from "Front Row" to "So Pure," Morissette displays an expanded understanding of pop song mechanics. It's this melodic progression that helps INFATUATION JUNKIE live up to Morissette's daunting past. SKU: 3102588

14 Shades Of Grey (+DVD) [PA]
Full title: 14 Shades Of Grey. This limited-edition of 14 SHADES OF GREY includes a bonus DVD featuring a home-movie documentary of the band's history. This is a Hyper CD which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Staind: Aaron Lewis (vocals); Mike Mushok (guitar); Johnny "Old School" April (bass); Jon Wysocki (drums). While many bands lumped under the nu-metal banner seem to rely on angry posturing and shock tactics to sell records, Staind has quietly and consistently topped the sales and radio charts with a stripped-down and emotionally direct approach devoid of gimmickry. On the group's third album 14 SHADES OF GREY, singer Aaron Lewis and crew deliver a distinctly organic-sounding, mature disc that still manages to rock like a wild beast. Powered by the pile-driving yet earthy rhythm section of bassist Johnny April and drummer Jon Wysocki, Staind stands head and shoulders above many of its contemporaries by mixing de-tuned thrash with an old-school rock & roll kick. There's a touch of bluesy Zeppelin mixed in with the angst, and the band's subtle sexiness serves to temper Lewis's darkermelodic and lyrical instincts. Featuring songs that address everything from the joyous birth of the singer's daughter ("Zoe Jane") to the tragic death of Alice In Chains vocalist Layne Staley ("Layne"), 14 SHADES OF GREY is an unquestionably adult album created by a band at once deafeningly heavy and clearly more concerned with making art than scaring parents. White Stones
Secret Garden: Fionnuala Sherry (violin); Rolf Lovland (piano, keyboards). Additional personnel: Rolf Kristensen (guitar, zither harp); Des Mooore (guitar); John Feeley (classical guitar); Annbjorg Lien (fiddle); Simon Emes (oboe); Hans Fredrik Jackobsen (whistle, recorder); Davy Spillane (Uilleann Pipe); Martin O'Connor (accordion); Kenneth Edge (soprano saxophone); Bjorn Ole Rasch (keyboards); Eoghan O'Neill (bass); Robbie Casserly (drums); Noel Eccles (percussion). Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland. On their second album, duo Secret Garden play with the conventions of Celtic and neo-classical music, weaving in unexpected elements like Spanish guitars and Eastern European folk melodies as their muse dictates. Norwegian pianist Rolf Lovland composes striking instrumentals for which Fionnuala Sherry's violin supplies the lead voice. Just about every song here features a lavish orchestral arrangement, but it's Sherry's violin that speaks loudest and touches the heart most tenderly. Her fluid, emotive technique shines on tracks like "Appassionata," and is made all the more admirable knowing that she was recovering from serious injuries and in great physical pain during the recording sessions. The overall mood is weighty, heart-centered, providing a supportive background for personal reflection. The beautiful melancholia lifts a bit in tracks like the polyrhythmic intoxication of "Windancer" and "Escape," which evokes Gypsy caravansand circus performers run amok. SKU: 1002438

Transfiguration Of Blind Joe Death, The
1965's THE TRANSFIGURATION OF BLIND JOE DEATH is one of John Fahey's most mysterious albums. Despite the best efforts of cadres of Fahey-ologists, it's still not entirely known for sure when or where the 15 tracks were recorded. Regardless, the resulting collection has an odd fragmentary quality that actually enhances the overall album rather than detracting from it. Skipping from playful eccentricities like a version of the old standard "Bicycle Built For Two" to impressionistic, watery originals like the sublime "The Death of the Clayton Peacock," THE TRANSFIGURATION OF BLIND JOE DEATH is an endlessly fascinating, occasionally impenetrable delight. Complete Fahey newcomers might want to try a more cohesive effort like THE LEGEND OF BLIND JOE DEATH, however. SKU: 1011256
