Best Of Booker T And The MG's, The
Booker T & The MG's: Booker T. Jones (keyboards); Steve Cropper (guitar); Lewis Steinberg, Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson (drums). Additional personnel: Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Charles Axton (tenor saxophone. One of the finest soul instrumental bands ever, Booker T. and The MGs were originally employed as the house band at Stax Records. Their widely imitated guitar/bass/drum/organ groove (a formula they essentially invented) propelled legendary tracks by the likes of Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, and Otis Redding. In addition to helping develop and pioneer the Memphis sound as a back-up band, the MG's also released original material to great commercial success. Those records have, over time, become classics in their own right. This impeccable Atlantic compilation features all of the band's singles up to 1968 (the early Stax catalogue went to Atlantic, the later to Fantasy Records--see Fantasy's BEST OF collection for the MGs' later hits). Arguably, the band's finest material is here: the slinky, minor key jam of "Soul Dressing," the propulsive drive of "Can't Be Still" the loping funk of "Hip Hug-Her" and, of course, "Green Onions," possibly the most grooving song in history. Bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn and drummer Al Jackson's in-the-pocket rhythm, Steve Cropper's stinging guitar lines and Booker T. Jones' swelling, funk organ combine to create a sound that still seems as fresh today as it did in the early '60s. SKU: 3101816

Dogman
King's X: Ty Tabor(vocals, guitar); Doug Pinnick (vocals, bass); Jerry Gaskill (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Brendan O'Brien (keyboards, percussion). Recorded at Southern Tracks, Atlanta, Georgia. After the disappointment of their unfocused 1992 self-titled release, King's X unleashed their heaviest release yet two years later. DOGMAN sounded as if the trio had been reborn--they hadn't rocked this convincingly since the dawn of the '90s. Produced by Brendan "Pearl Jam" O'Brien, DOGMAN benefits from straight ahead sound and more focused songwriting (especially when compared to its predessor). The biting title track remains one of the band's best and hardest-hitting rockers, while other standouts include "Shoes," "Fool You," "Complain," and the more low-key "Cigarettes." Unquestionably, DOGMAN is a quintessential King's X release. SKU: 1006662

Agharta
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet, organ); Sonny Fortune (soprano & alto saxophones, flute); Pete Cosey (synthesizer, guitar, percussion); Reggie Lucas (guitar); Michael Henderson (electric bass); Al Foster (drums); Mtume (congas, water drum, rhythm box, percussion). Producer: Teo Macero. Reissue producer: Mike Berniker. Recorded live at Osaka Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan on February 1, 1975. Includes liner notes by Lee Jeske. Digitally remastered by Larry Keyes (CBS Records Studios, New York, New York). Often derided or misunderstood during the time of their original release, Miles Davis' numerous releases following BITCHES BREW are now recognized for their startlingly unconventional beauty. Drawing on rock and funk, Miles unflinchingly followed his muse into the subtle dynamics to be found in hypnotically relentless repetition overlaid with fiery soloing. This hundred-minute, two-disc set was recorded live in Japan in 1975 and finds Miles trading solos with saxophonist Sonny Fortune over an undulating rhythm thicketof two guitars, electric bass, drums and conga/percussion. Miles punctuates the proceedings and takes the ensemble on abrupt turns in the road with organ stabs and swells. Not for the faint of heart, this is as bracing and dazzling as waves breaking over a spit of shoreline, or fireworks exploding on all sides of you at once. SKU: 1001382

Headhunters
Personnel: Herbie Hancock (Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, synthesizer); Bennie Maupin (soprano & tenor saxophones, saxello, bass clarinet, alto flute); Paul Jackson (marimbula, bass); Harvey Mason (drums); Bill Summers (congas, shekere, balafon, agogo, cabasa, hindewho, tambourine, log drum, surdo, gankoqui, beer bottle). Recorded at Wally Heider Studios and Different Fur Trading Co., San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Scott H. Thompson and Herbie Hancock. Head Hunters has spawned a thousand copies and copyists, but is only strengthened through comparison. One of the most enduring works of the 70s' jazz/funk legacy, andsurely one of Herbie Hancock's most enjoyable and infectious recordings, the album was released in the deeply groovy days of 1973, and soon became the best-selling record in jazz history. Loping along on a glorious bed of springy wah-wah and synth bass, the group used all the new technology of the time, and Hancock himself seemed to revel (as he still does) in the latest keyboard sounds available to him. Jazz/funk has never again sounded so exciting and dangerous. SKU: 3101161

FANMAIL was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year. "Unpretty" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and Song Of The Year. "No Scrubs" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Record Of The Year. The bad girls of R&B are back at it again and after a long layoff. Chili, Left Eye, and T-Boz, collectively known as TLC prove that nothing's gonna change their world. With classic TLC demeanor on tracks like "No Scrubs" (sure to get even the most motion-challenged dancer to bust a move), "I'm Good At Being Bad," (TLC at its best) "Silly Ho" and "If They Knew," TLC reminds us why being "bad" is sometimes so attractive. But with all the bad-girl image that TLC works so hard to project, they show their versatility on tracks like "I Miss You So Much" and "Dear Lie." These two cuts show some sentimentality, spotlighting a different side of the TLC their fans have come to know and love. SKU: 1000358

Golden Celebration, A
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley, The Jordanaires. Compilation producers: Joan Deary, Gregg Gellar. Digitally remastered by Dennis Ferrante and Vince Caro. In the years since Elvis' death, RCA has chosen various landmark occasions on which to release sets of previously unissued Presley material. ELVIS ARON PRESLEY, sometimes referred to as the "Silver Box," arrived on the fifth anniversary of Presley's passing. PLATINUM: A LIFE IN MUSIC marked the twentieth anniversary. The release of the best of these four-CD boxes, ELVIS: A GOLDEN CELEBRATION, coincided with Presley's fiftieth birthday. GOLDEN CELEBRATION focuses three of its four discs on the first years of Presley's career. Several excellent Sun session outtakes precede the core of the record, which consists of a complete collection of Presley's incendiary 1956 television performances and a September 1956 homecoming concert in Tupelo, Mississippi. The final disc contains a potpourri of goodies: home demos, an interview with a rude TV Guide reporter, and a generous helping of songsfrom the "sit-down" concert portion of the 1968 Comeback Special. The sound quality on the recordings, a number of which were apparently made on crude home recorders, is usually pretty good, except for the Tupelo concerts which are bootleg quality. Alongside THE COMPLETE '50S MASTERS, GOLDEN CELEBRATION provides an essential panoramic view of Presley's best years. SKU: 5063846

Kill Bill Vol.1
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Includes 5 untitled hidden tracks following "Super 16." Quentin Tarantino has always armed himself with an arsenal of eclectic songs for his pop-culture-filled films, and the soundtrack to KILL BILL VOL. 1 is no exception. To kick off the first part of his ultra-violent kung fu revenge extravaganza, Tarantino offers up Nancy Sinatra's brooding "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)." The tone swiftly changes to upbeat rockabilly with the Charlie Feathers ditty "That Certain Female," and the stylistic shifts keeping coming with Luis Bacalov's spry spaghetti Western tune "The Grand Duel - (Parte Prima)" and Bernard Hermann's creepy "Twisted Nerve." Hip-hop innovator/martial arts fan the RZA contributes two songs (one intriguingly paired with a Charles Bernstein number), Santa Esmeralda stretches out "Don't Let Me BeMisunderstood" into a 10-minute salsa-flavored epic, Meiko Kaji breezes through "The Flower of Carnage," and Neu! appears in an ominous excerpt. Like Uma Thurman as KILL BILL's lead character, any soundtrack that features this bizarre blend of artists--along with Zamfir, Master of the Pan-flute--commands respect and demands that the audience take note of the killer cuts. Velvet Underground And Nico, The
The digitally remastered VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO is also included in its entirety on the 5 disc set PEEL SLOWLY AND SEE. Velvet Underground & Nico: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); Nico (vocals); Sterling Morrison (guitar, bass, background vocals); John Cale (electric viola, piano, bass, background vocals); Maureen Tucker (percussion, background vocals). Recorded at T.T.G. Studios, Hollywood California; Sceptor Studios and Mayfair Sound Studios, New York, New York in April & November 1966 & April-May 1967. Originally released on Verve (5008). Brian Eno once said that only a hundred people bought Velvet Underground records when they first came out, but those hundred people all went out and formed their own bands. The rest, of course, is history: the Velvet Underground was the catalyst that helped spark punk rock, and began the growth of an alternative branch within rock & roll's grand family tree. VU's was an unparalleled glimpse into the Summer Of Love's alter ego, complete with graphic, unapologetic descriptions of drug use and risque sexual situations. Their classic 1967 debut, VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO, was a tour de force that may never be equaled for its sheer radicalism in the face of rock convention. The Velvet Underground also mapped out unconquered sonic territories. Bassist John Cale was weaned on deconstructing classical theory--the perfect avant-garde foil to help bring Lou Reed's terse songs to life. Even more noticeable when he switched to electric viola, Cale's sound evoked the terror of Reed's compositions, with the bowed strings screeching like a runaway subway car. Drummer Maureen Tucker played like no one before her. Her frantic swipes could mimic a galloping rush in "Heroin," or work with the delicate, hesitant charm of "All Tomorrow's Parties." Guitarist Sterling Morrison wasa master of his craft, ably switching from oddly Middle-Eastern plucking (the eerie "All Tomorrow's Parties") to head-on rock (the ultra-edgy "Waiting For The Man"), always adding just the right element to fatten the cacophony. VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO is one of rock's most significant debuts. SKU: 3102066

Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall (The Bootleg Series Vol.6)
Full title: The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1964-The Philharmonic Hall Concert. Includes a 52-page booklet. Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, acoustic guitar); Joan Baez. Recorded at Philharmonic Hall, New York, New York on October 31, 1964. Includes liner notes by Sean Wilentz. In 1964, when the Beatles where still singing "I Want to Hold Your Hand," Bob Dylan was quietly making history at New York's Philharmonic Hall (now Avery Fisher Hall). ANOTHER SIDE OF BOBDYLAN had recently been released, but even the flights of fancy on "Spanish Harlem Incident" and "To Ramona" (both performed here), while unprecedented, couldn't have prepared the audience for the Big Bang of songwriting represented by the still-unrecorded "Gates of Eden" and "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)." In a voice full of youthful vitality and insouciance, Dylan delivered groundbreaking poetic epics to a crowd that must have been equally confounded and exhilarated. Disc Two contains more of Dylan's older, more conventional material as well as four duets with Joan Baez, including the folk ballad "Silver Dagger," which Dylan would never record. As full of life as this second half of the Philharmonic concert is, it still serves as a breath-catching period in the wake of the world-changing new songs heard in the first set. Probably only a few of those in attendance realized it at the time, but music would never be the same again. SKU: 1087433

Best Of The Private Years, The
Personnel: Taj Mahal (vocals, dobro, harmonica, kazoo); Bonnie Raitt (vocals); Eric Clapton, Johnny Lee Schell, John Porter (guitar); Mike Campbell (12-string guitar); Joe Sublett (soprano & tenor saxophones); Marty Grebb (alto, tenor & baritone saxophones, background vocals); Darrell Leonard (trumpet, French horn, trombone, trombonium); Ian McLagan, Jon Cleary, Bill Payne (piano); Mick Weaver (Hammond B-3 organ); Jon Brion (chamberlin); Bob Glaub, Larry Fulcher, James "Hutch" Hutchinson (bass); Tony Braunagel (drums, tambourine, percussion); Richie Hayward (drums); Michito Sanchez (percussion); "Sweet Pea" Atkinson, Terrence Forsythe (background vocals). Recorded at Studio 55, House Of Blues Studios West, Ocean Way & Cherokee Studios, Los Angeles, California; Devonshire Audio/Video Studio, North Hollywood, California; Red Zone Studios, Burbank, California. Despite Taj Mahal having spent mostof his musical life gaining a reputation as a guitar-playing ethnomusicologist versed in rural black American and Caribbean genres, his lighter side is equally as entrancing, as can be heard on this compilation of mostly covers. The only Mahal originals included are the poignant "Lovin' In My Baby's Eyes" and the raunchy, Howlin' Wolf-flavored "Blues Ain't Nothin'." The rest of BEST OF finds this musical jack-of-all trades showing his ease at moving between interpretations of Hank Williams (a rollicking "Mind Your Own Business"), Horace Silver (the dark be-bop of "Senor Blues"), and Otis Redding (a brassy "Mr. Pitiful"). Elsewhere, Mahal's raspy delivery perfectly fires up rollicking versions of Jessie Hill's "Ooh Poo Pah Doo" and Hank Ballard's "The Hoochi Coochi Coo." Other highlights include a kazoo solo on the Washboard Sam shuffle "Sophisticated Mama," and duets with Bonnie Raitt and Etta James. On the former, Mahal hoots and howls alongside Raitt's dulcet tunes on Don Gardner and Dee Dee Ford's "Need Your Lovin'." The latter collaboration also features a ballsy reading of Charles & Inez Foxx's "Mockingbird." SKU: 1038842

De La Soul: Kalvin "Posdunos" Mercer, David "Trugoy The Dove" Jolicoeur (rap vocals); Vincent "Maseo" Mason (turntables). Additional personnel includes: Hope Wilson, Chaka Khan, Aiya Merier, Jean Francois, Supa Dav West (vocals); Mike D, Ad Rock, Tash, J-Ro, Redman, Pharoahe Monch, Indeed, D.V. Alias Khrist, Busta Rhymes, Indeed, Freddie Foxxx (rap vocals); Pino Palladino (bass); Scratch (turntables). Producers include: Supa Dav West, De La Soul, Ad Lib, Jaydee, Rockwilder. Recorded at Mirror Image Studios, New York, New York. "Oooh." was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. De La Soul is one of the few groups that consistently release albums that leave a lasting impression on hip-hop. Its fifth album, ART OFFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, is the first installment in a three CD set that's intended to be the trio's farewell to rap. With this in mind, De La Soul gives its fans the same flavor it has become famous for over the years. It blurs its own sonic boundaries with songs like "Thru Ya City," featuring DV Alias Khrist, which sounds harder than is usual for the former Daisy Agers. On "Squat," Pos, Dove, and Mase collaborate with The Beastie Boys for a different effect, but the majority of the album remains calm; check out "Oooh!" featuring Redman for De La Soul at its best. Truth Crushed To Earth Shall Rise Again [PA]
House Of Pain: Everlast, Danny Boy O'Connor (vocals); D.J. Lethal. Additional personnel: Guru, Sadat X, Divine Styler, Cockni O'Dire (vocals). Recorded at Ameraycan Studios, North Hollywood, California. House Of Pain's third album is a murky, nightmarish soundscape that curls around the listener like a cloud of pot smoke. The minor-key synth chords and simple, bass-heavy beats provided by D.J. Lethal, and the rough, husky voices of Everlast and Danny Boy O'Connor paint a picture of grim urbandesolation, as eerie as it is urgent. House Of Pain employs none of the tongue-twisting vocal gymnastics and erratic phrasing that are staples of modern hip-hop. Rather, Everlast and O'Connor come off like groovy stormtroopers, declaiming with a brutish immediacy and rhythmic simplicity that connect like a kidney punch. Guests Guru ("Fed Up" remix) and Sadat X ("Heart Full Of Sorrow") expand the sonic horizons of TRUTH CRUSHED with their sinuous contributions, but the bottom line here is the unvarnished brutality of the streets. This is the world represented on the ominous "The Have Nots" and the uncompromising "Choose Your Poison." Miles away from the bounce and levity of House Of Pain's early work, TRUTH CRUSHED is a lethal dose of hard-core hip-hop that makes no concessions to commerciality. SKU: 1087321

Live In Tokyo
Personnel: Brad Mehldau (piano). Recording information: Triphony, Hall, Tokyo, Japan (02/15/2003). In the early 2000s, more and more jazz musicians began breaking away from the Great American Songbook. Rather than limiting themselves to the standard tunes fromTin Pan Alley and Broadway, jazz artists started to embrace pop music to a greater extent. Pianist Brad Mehldau was one of the most noted proponents of this shift. On the 2004 solo outing, LIVE IN TOKYO, Mehldau further distances himself from the older pianistic traditions of Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, et al. This is evidenced by his choice of repertoire, which includes two songs by melancholy British folk icon Nick Drake ("Things Behind the Sun" and "River Man") and one by rock renegades Radiohead ("Paranoid Android"). Mehldau's interpretations also avoid bebop stylings and instead draw from a more eclectic blend of atonality, minimalism, and abstraction. Mehldau's version of "Paranoid Android" is a good example of this musical stew; the song is marked by haunting chordal textures and complex melodic gestures. Of course, the track list does reveal some familiar pieces by George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Thelonious Monk. However, these, too, are treated with the same kind of conceptual approach that Mehldau fearlessly applies to Drake and Radiohead. SKU: 6571279

Love Devotion Surrender [Remastered]
Personnel: Carlos Santana (guitar); Mahavishnu John McLaughlin (guitar, piano); Larry Young (organ); Doug Rauch (bass); Billy Cobham, Don Alias, Jan Hammer, Mike Shrieve (drums); Armando Peraza (congas). Recorded in 1972. Originally released on Columbia (32034). Includes liner notes by Hal Miller. Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin are two of jazz-rock's finest guitarists, virtuosos who temper their fire with deep spirituality. This album is a summit meeting between the two string wizards and their respective bands; Santana's percussionists mix it up with Jan Hammer and Billy Cobham of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The guitarists created this album as a tribute to their then-guru, spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy. The passion and purity of their belief in Chinmoy's teachings ismatched by the technical facility that could only have come from the discipline their faith provided them. Two Coltrane pieces open up the album. Santana and McLaughlin enter with all guns blazing, breathing electric fire on a raucous version of "A Love Supreme," given a '73-vintage fusion overhaul. Things get acoustic and contemplative on Coltrane's "Naima." Two blazing, all-out shredfests follow, with death-defying fretwork from both of the principals. Things close out on a reflective note with the short, gentle, acoustic-based "meditation." LOVE DEVOTION SURRENDER is a classic of the first and greatest jazz-rock era, recommended to fans of the leaders' aforementioned bands, as well as aficionados of the Tony Williams Lifetime and Miles Davis's BITCHES BREW, both of which featured McLaughlin. Queer As Folk I (US TV Series)
Compilation producers: Vincent Degiorgio, Scot McFadyen, Michael Perlmutter, Bill Rosenfeld. Includes liner notes by Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman. This disc offers the music featured in the TV series QUEER AS FOLK. The show began in England, and was initially deemed too controversial to be shown in the US. However, Showtime took up the gauntlet and created its own series based on the original, focusing on the ups and downs of life as a homosexual in today's world. The songs included here are the kind you'd be likely to hear on a long evening of cosmopolitan club-hopping (specifically an evening of gay club-hopping). Synth blasts and house beats are the order of the day, as frenetic dance rhythms pound out a hectic cadence. There are some variations, though, such as the old-school disco beat of Alcazar's "Crying at the Discoteque," the muted, jazz-sampling "Straight To...Number One," and a clubbed up take on the Deniece Williams '80s hit"Let's Hear it for the Boy" that gives the old FOOTLOOSE anthem a whole new context. Concert For George (A Celebration Of The Life And Music Of George Harrison)
Recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, London, England on November 22, 2002. George Harrison was always known as the Beatle with the most pronounced interest in spirituality and distaste for earthly contrivances. The intensity of feeling, palpable here inthe performances of Harrison's musical friends at his memorial concert, mirrors the depth of emotion on the part of the millions touched by "the quiet Beatle"'s work over the years. The first disc of this live recording features musical tributes from Harrison's Indian mentor Ravi Shankar and Shankar's sitar-virtuoso daughter Anoushka--fitting for a Brit who pioneered the incorporation of Eastern flavors into 1960s rock. The second disc is a full-on rock-star tribute, but instead of the overkill one might expect with so much rock royalty involved (including musical director Eric Clapton), the result is a straightforward, perfectly rendered, and touchingly sincere program of Harrison's finest compositions. From fellow travelers Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr's respective versions of "All Things Must Pass" and "Photograph" to early British rocker/Beatles influence Joe Brown's humble take on "Here Comes the Sun," CONCERT FOR GEORGE overflows with honest outpourings of love and fine performances in equal measure. Full title: Live: Entertainment Or Death. This is an EnhancedCD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include the "Wild Side" video. Motley Crue: Vince Neil (vocals); Mick Mars (guitar); Nikki Six (bass); Tommy Lee (drums). Recorded between 1982 & 1999. Includes liner notes by Paul Miles. Long overdue and eagerly awaited by Crueheads and metal fans alike, ENTERTAINMENT OR DEATH is the first live Motley Crue release. And instead of just pulling a couple shows from the group's reunion tour, this package covers Motley Crue's entire career; it is an audio souvenir of one of the most exciting live bands ever. "Looks That Kill" (Fresno '85) is classic Crue and opens this trip down metal memory lane. "Home Sweet Home" (Dallas '98) will have you raising your lighter in the air. Vince Neil's arena war cries never disappoint, and ex-drummer Tommy Lee exclaims "been thereawrecked that s**t" before breaking into "Wildside." Lesser-known Crue gems like "Knock 'Em Dead Kid" and "Public Enemy #1" are supplemented by chart-toppers like "Smokin' in the Boy's Room" and "Girls, Girls, Girls." A raucous cover of "Helter Skelter" from the band's early live gigs highlights the set. ENTERTAINMENT is the true Motley live experience, with attitude-driven renditions of the band's best material. Another Level
Blackstreet: Teddy "Street" Riley, Eric "E" Williams (vocals, various instruments); Chauncey "Black" Hannibal, Mark L. Middleton (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Dr. Dre, Queen Pen, Beverly Crowder, Karen Anderson, Shaquanna Elam, Darryl Adams, ELAN, Lamenga Ford, Shannon Cooper, Deja, Taja (vocals); William Stewart, Sprague Williams, Serban Ghenea, Eric Williams, Wesley Hoggs, Tommy Sims (various instruments); Frank "Nitty" Pimental, Roosevelt Harrell (programming). "No Diggity" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and was nominated for Best R&B Song. Teddy Riley's fans were begging for a reunion of Guy, the trio with which he brought deep-soul music back to the R&B genre, but Riley chose to forge ahead with his new band, Blackstreet, instead. Wise move. Blackstreet's second album really does take the Riley R&B sound to ANOTHER LEVEL. It's one of the best R&B albums we've heard in a long time. The tracks here are unbelievably funky, and though two of Blackstreet's four singers have turned over since the debut--the new ones are Eric Williams and Mark L. Middleton--the vocal harmonies are breathtaking. Classic Stevie Wonder would be an apt comparison. Riley evokes old-schoolsoul a number of times here--"Don't Leave Me" and "The Lord Is Real" sample the DeBarge tunes "A Dream" and "Time Will Reveal," respectively. But that's not to say Blackstreet doesn't move forward to ANOTHER LEVEL, because with super-producer Riley, of course it does. SKU: 1019861
