Nuvol I Cadira
Animals On Wheels: Andy Coleman. Recorded between 1998 & 1999. Andy Coleman led the charge when drum-and-bass took an enthusiastic left turn toward the spastic burp-beats and frenzied time signatures of "drill-and-bass." As producers traded precision for sloppy energy, Coleman's Animal on Wheels project at least retained a core of solid songcraft amid its zanier deviations. The headz at Ninja Tune recognized this standout quality, snapped up AoW from Coleman's micro-indie Bovinyl label, and loosed him on the world. NUVOL I CADIRA, Coleman's second AoW album for Ninja Tune, repays the downtempo empire's investment in spades. Coleman is still too clever by half, though here he harnesses his eccentricities in service of some truly memorable music. The refined AoW sound is a close cousin to Boards of Canada's "toytronic" whimsy, with hazy, lazy melodies hammered out on melting xylophones and ancient synths, kinky yet crisphip-hop beats, and oddball sample drop-ins. But NUVOL I CADIRA has a genuine richness that reveals more of itself with each spin. Such tracks as "How It Destructs," "To a Void You Is All Now," and "Them to BC" bolster AoW's trademark scatter-breaks with a melange of jazz drumming, dreamy electronics, tricked-out production, moody melodies, and fusion froth. Cordially decadent and simply delectable. SKU: 1025954

Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned
This is an album of raw energy where the beats are the stars, and the voices just samples in Liam's sonic armoury. The guests whose vocals have undergone Howlett's subverted cut up techniques include Liam Gallagher, Juliette Lewis, Kool Keith, Princess Superstar, Ping PongBitches, Twista, Shahin Bada (better known as the spine tingling chanteuse from 'Smack My Bitch Up') and unknown lo-fi singer songwriter Paul Jackson from Dirt Candy. Fallout, The
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Enhanced portion includes a music video for "Wasting My Time." Default: Dallas Smith (vocals); Jeremy James Hora (guitar, background vocals); Dave Benedict (bass); Danny Craig (drums). Enginners include: Kip Beelman, Joey Moi, Joe Spivak. Recorded at London Bridge, Seattle, Washington and Greenhouse Studios, Burnaby, Canada. Not to be outdone by Britain's storied musical legacy, Canada's hard rock scene staged an invasion of its own. Canucks including Nickelback and Our Lady Peace forged a pipeline into the U.S. market in recent years, and Default follows in the wake of that success. Said bands' influence shines through, especially since Nickelback vocalist/guitarist Chad Kroeger produced Default's early demos and gave an earlier incarnation of the band (known at that time as Fallout) some coveted warm-up slots. "Wasting My Time" is as chart-worthy a single as could ever be found, brimming with Staind-meets-STP grooves. Rookie vocalist Dallas Smith sings with the conviction and passion of a seasonedpro, especially on "Somewhere" and "By Your Side." Veteran grunge producer Rick Parasher (Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains) has effectively captured the sonic essence of Default. By design, THE FALLOUT comes across equal parts raw and refined; a perfect symmetry for this promising new band. SKU: 1074973

Cry Not For Me
CRY NOT FOR ME brings together 20 of the 51 recordings Patsy Cline made for the Four Star company between 1955 and 1960. Unlike some of the many Cline compilations out there, this one actually includes songwriter credits and track lengths, but that's about it for documentation--only the MCA reissues include anything resembling personnel credits and session dates, and even they do so only sporadically. Having said that, there'splenty of great material here. Patsy Cline tried her hand at recording rockabilly, r&b--inflected pop and torchy ballads as well as honky tonk during the first part of her career, all of which is well represented on CRY NOT FOR ME. "Three Cigarettes In An Ashtray" may be the archetypal Cline heartbreaker, but this set also includes the blue, late-night "Don't Ever Leave Me Again" and "Then You'll Know." "Turn The Cards Slowly," from her first session, is in the western swing vein, "Stop Look And Listen" is unrepentant rockabilly, and "The Heart You Break May Be Your Own" is straight up country. By the early '60s Cline had succeeded in crossing over to the pop market but on these recordings she's still playing it fast and loose. SKU: 1065693

8701
This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files, which include a digital photo gallery and a music video for "U Remind Me." Personnel includes: Usher, P. Diddy, Kelis (vocals); Jermaine Dupri (vocals, various instruments); Soulshock (various instruments, turntables); Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, Jimmy Jam, Terry Louis, Babyface, Bryan-Michael Cox, Karlin (various instruments); Dave Barry (acoustic guitar); William "Billy" Odum, Juan "Johnny" Najera, LaMarquis Jefferson (guitar); Valdez Brantley (keyboards, programming); Arthur Strong, James "Big Jim" Wright (keyboards); Stokley (drums); Alex Richbourg (programming); Sheree Ford-Payne, Bria Fuentes, Raymond Ford, Tajuanna Ford (background vocals). Producers include: Edmund "Eddie Hustle" Clement, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, The Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri. Engineers include: John Frye, Mark Rains, Bryan Garten. "U Remind Me" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. "U Don't Have To Call" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. R&B mack daddy Usher puts a lot of himself into 8701; that's apparent even from the title itself, which represents the year Usher began exploring the world of music ('87) and the place where music brought him by the time of this recording ('01). He starts thing out in grand style with the romantic "U Remind Me." "I Don't Know" takes a hip-hop turn with a contribution from P. Diddy (that's Puff Daddy for those of you arriving late), but Usher is quick to point out that he's strictly about partying and loving, not about thug life. While there are some amped-up, percolating tunes that make good use of Usher's high energy ("I Can't Let U Go"), he really hits his stride when he falls into the familiar position of heartthrob/crooner. His sensual cooing, breathy tone, and smooth-as-silk delivery on the likes of "Can U Help Me" (Usher seems to have graduated from the Prince school of song titles) and "How Do I Say" play to this charmer's strengths and are sure to keep the sizable female quotient of his audience sufficiently entranced. Joe Budden [PA]
Personnel: Joe Budden, Busta Rhymes (rap vocals); Lil' Mo, 112 (vocals); Lofey (keyboards, strings, drums, percussion); Kiyamma Griffin, Mike Gainous, Envyi (background vocals). Joe Budden's self-titled debut features the Jersey City rapper on more than a dozen tunes, backed by his longtime crew. Formerly known on mix tapes as "Regular Joe," Budden keeps it real on lyrically tough tunes such as "Pusha Man," "Survivor," and "Stand Up Nucca." He also offers up some therapeutic personal tracks, including the string-laden "Walk Wit Me" and the melancholy "Calm Down." To make his first album even more explosive, Budden brings in special guests Busta Rhymes (on "Fire"), Lil' Mo (on "She Wanna Know"), and 112 (on "Ma Ma Ma"). Apromising first outing, JOE BUDDEN reveals a bright future for the ambitious Jersey native. SKU: 1084928

Alone [Remastered]
Solo performer: Bill Evans (piano). Recorded at Webster Hall, New York, New York between September & October 1968. Includes liner notes by Phil Bailey and Bill Evans. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Verve Records "Master Edition" series. Jazz pianist Bill Evans's first released solo record almost glows with an absence of self-consciousness and a pure connection between Evans and his music. This sense of unaffected ease, of effortless flow between keys, chords, and tones, won Evans his third Grammy for ALONE. As usual, Evans's repertoire is heavy on American pop songs, taking compositions like "On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever)" to incomparably innovative places with his subtle, probing style. The introspective, nuanced version of "Never Let Me Go" is perhaps the most remarkable number, with the final two CD bonus tracks feeling tacked on; they include alternate takes of "Midnight Mood" and "A Time For Love," and both lackthe sense of unity which characterizes the rest of ALONE. The Hut Recordings 1991-2001 (Limited Edition)
Ifyou're reading this, you probably already have some of the essential music on this compilation - 'Yes', 'Nancy Boy', 'All You Good Good People', 'History'. If you were lucky enough to snap up a copy of The Music's 'Take the Long Road and Walk It' when first released, then good luck to you. I didn't and couln't find it anywhere except on this compilation. A truly fantastic debut single, worth the price on it's own. Only it's not on it's own. It's got Whale's 'Hobo-humping Slobo Babe' for company. And what splendid noisy-quiet company it is, a welcome blast from the past. SKU: 8888084

Start Static (+DVD)
Contains a hidden track after "I Changed My Mind". Sugarcult: Tim Pagnotta (vocals, guitar); Marko 72 (guitar); Airin (bass, background vocals); Ben Davis (drums, background vocals). Recorded between March and April 2001. This Santa Barbara foursome has its pop-punk aesthetic down cold. They should; they spent plenty of time touring in support of their first two indie records before landing on Ultimatum/Artemis and releasing STARTSTATIC. Their sound is a canny mix of contemporary pop-punk and late-'70s new wave. Accordingly, the songs exult in catchy choruses, herky-jerky riffs, and rhythms alternately bouncy and rampaging. Moments like the opening guitar lines of "Saying Goodbye" and the irresistible chorus of opening tune "You're the One" show that for all their punky energy these lads have pop smarts aplenty. "Crashing Down" and "Changed My Name" show that Sugarcult is far from incapable of ballads, and the closing hidden track even gets a bit jazzy. Possibilities clearly abound. SKU: 1080442

Almost Blue [Remastered]
Personnel: Elvis Costello (vocals, guitar); John McFee (guitar, pedal steel); Tommy Millar (fiddle); Steve Nieve (piano, organ); Bruce Thomas (bass); Pete Thomas (drums); Nashville Edition (background vocals). Recorded at CBS Studios, Nashville, Tennessee in May, 1981; live at the Mean Machine, Aberdeen, Scotland on July 30, 1981; live atThe Palomino Club, North Hollywood, California on February 16, 1979; live at The Royal Albert Hall, London, England on January 7, 1982. Includes liner notes by Elvis Costello. Personnel include: Elvis Costello (vocals, guitar); George Jones, Johnny Cash (vocals); John McFee (guitar, pedal steel guitar); Tommy Millar (fiddle); Steve Nieve (piano, organ); Bruce Thomas (bass guitar); Pete Thomas (drums). Liner Note Author: Elvis Costello. This is where Costello began to display the chameleonic tendencies that would serve him so well throughout his career. Abandoning snappy, "new wave"-associated rock for the first time, Elvis decided to visit Nashville and record his take on the country classics he loved so much. Enlisting the services of George Jones producer Billy Sherrill, Costello cloaked himself and the Attractions in countrypolitan trappings (including lush strings) for some distinctive version of country evergreens like "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down" and "Sweet Dreams." Only the punk-derived fervor of "Why Don't You Love Me Like You Used To Do" and the bar-room raunch of "Honey Hush" interrupt the elegant, emotional balladry. Costello also pays tribute to a more recent generation on aching covers of Gram Parsons' "I'm Your Toy" and "How Much I Lied." Ryko's bonus cuts sweeten the pot considerably, especially the live version of Leon Payne's self-explanatory "Psycho." SKU: 6553311

Magnification
Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals, acoustic & synthesized guitars); Steve Howe (acoustic, electric & steel guitars, mandolin); Alan White (piano, drums, percussion, background vocals); Chris Squire (bass, background vocals). Engineers include: Tim Weidner, Nick Sevilla, John Elder. Recorded at Sound Design Studios, Santa Barbara, California. Yes brings its sweeping brand of art rock to new heights with MAGNIFICATION, the band's first orchestral album since 1970's TIME AND A WORD. The tried and true quartet of Anderson, Squire, Howe, and White have done justice to this album's title; their latest sonic landscape is both magnified and enhanced by composer/arranger Larry Groupe. Groupe's role so symbiotic and integral it's as if he's a longtime band member in Yes and his instrument is the orchestrahe conducts. What sets MAGNIFICATION apart from your typical rock-band-with-orchestra project is the arrangements. Rather than adding clutter or tacky overstatement, the orchestral parts take on a voice that at times acts as subtle foundation, and finds the perfect moments to act as a lead "instrument." The title track strolls with majesty, following with the crushing emotional crescendos of "Spirit of Survival." The trademark Yes chorus is splendidly present on "Don't Go," which breaks into a quirky, theatric mid-section. A dramatic score opens "Give Love Each Day" as the band shows a beauty and restraint lacking in many of their progressive rock contemporaries. The epic suite "In The Presence Of" shows just how influential Yes has been in setting the standards that define their genre. SKU: 1065767

El Corazon
Personnel includes: Steve Earle (vocals, guitar, acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, mandola, harmonica, harmonium); Mark Stuart (vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin, mandola); Brad Jones (vocals, bass); Ross Rice (vocals, drums); Emmylou Harris, Siobhan Kennedy (vocals); David Steele (guitar, electric guitar); Tommy Hannum (pedal steel & steel guitars); Jim Hoke (baritone saxophone); Michael Smotherman (organ); Ray Kennedy (harmonium, hand drum, shaker, tambourine); Roy Huskey Jr. (bass); Brady Blade (drums, percussion, rubboard, tambourine); Dancing Eagle (drums); The Fairfield Four, The Supersuckers. The Del McCoury Band: Del McCoury (vocals, guitar); Ronnie McCoury (vocals, mandolin); Rob McCoury (banjo); Jason Carter (fiddle); Mike Bubb (bass). Recorded at Room & Board, Nashville, Tennessee and Ironwood Studios, Seattle, Washington. Includes liner notes by Steve Earle. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. EL CORAZON was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Steve Earle was a country-rock renegade when Uncle Tupelo were still in short pants and NO DEPRESSION was an inscription on a Prozac bottle. EL CORAZON stands as a milestone in the long checkered career of an artist who's been to hell and back without losing an ounce of his songwriting talent. This uniformly excellent batch of tunes alternates between gentle acoustic ballads and hard-rocking numbers that could give those grunge boys a run for their money (in fact, Seattle's Supersuckers guest on one track). On the opener, "Christmas in Washington," Earle invokes the spirit of bygone heroes like Woody Guthrie and Martin Luther King in service of an unpretentious folk ballad of socio-political discontent. He shows off his storytelling chops on the rocking "Taneytown," supported by the breathy harmonies of Emmylou Harris. The elegiac "Ft. Worth Blues" pays tribute to Earle's old running buddy and primary influence, the late Townes Van Zandt. Throughout, the album lives up to it's title, spilling messy emotions all over the place and wallowing in the carnage. SKU: 1003220
