On this disc, Lennon tackles his usual messages including love (of Yoko and mankind in general), peppy optimism in the face of dire circumstances and humorous observations of crazy times and conditions. The breadth of his interests has always been gargantuan and somehow when Lennon switches between the global focus of the title track to the personal "Yoko (I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry, Yoko)," he convinces us that these sentiments are not all that far apart. The playful, sexy "Tight As" is a jaunty rock-a-billy number reminding us that Lennon knows where he comes from. On "One Day At A Time," a love song with nursery rhyme metaphors, Lennon's silvery falsetto, usually featured in Beatle background vocals, takes the lead and is truly heart-wrenching.
The surreal, country dream pop of "You Are Here," with its steel guitars and leisurely tempo, pre-dates the luxurious kd lang/Ben Mink approach. To resist chanting along with the chorus on "Bring On The Lucie (Freeda Peeple)" would be near impossible-it's as infectious as it is "pc." Special kudos to Gordon Edwards, whose sure and melodic bass playing might've turned Mr. McCartney's head.

15 years after they broke up to pursue solo careers, the members of Bauhaus reformed for a limited series of live appearances. This two-disc, nearly 100-minute long live album (with one exception) was recorded in New York (hence the title) and is perhaps the best that the band has ever sounded. Kevin Haskin's drums never sounded this, well, massive on the studio albums, and Daniel Ash's guitars are sharper and more focused than ever.
Among the besttracks are the super-heavy version of "Double Dare" that opens the set; a dense, bone-grinding, 13-minute version of the band's signature tune, "Bela Lugosi's Dead"; and a shimmering, brittle version of "Spirit." The version of "Ziggy Stardust" that appears here is arguably better than David Bowie's original--Murphy really throws his voice around, and the rhythm section of J and Haskins provides a monumental pedestal for Ash's guitar fireworks. Another standout is "All We Ever Wanted," which gives both the guitars and vocals room to really shine. Also included, in two versions (one live, one studio) is a stately cover of Dead Can Dance's "Severence." If you ever wondered what the whole deal was with the "Goth" thing, look no further.

Those not inclined towards the less avant roots of the jazz genre might be better served by recommencing their continued investigations into the latest works of longtime ECM stablemate John Abercrombie. NOVEMBER finds the guitarist in a spirited quartet alongside the likes of bassist Johnson, drummer Peter Erskine, and saxophonist John Surman.
Though the album has its contemplative side (the lovely "J.S.," penned for and accompanied by Surman's piercing baritone), NOVEMBER's backbone is determined by the less-than-chilly energies of the title track and by European fusion exercises such as "The Cat's Back," where Surman's sax skitters throughout Abercrombie's slithery runs and Erskine's propulsive landscapes. NOVEMBER chooses to hover between free-form flights of fancy and contemplative traditionalist guises, always beguilingand inviting. Abercrombie remains one of contemporary jazz's great, unsung guitarists.

"Take A Look Around" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
To their credit, the people behind the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE film franchise decided to give each installment a distinct style, which is why the John Woo-directed second film is far more balletic and noir-ish than Brian DePalma's original. It's also why the songson the two soundtrack albums are so different.
The first film (1996) was dominated by quirky alt-rock from the likes of Bjork, Skunk Anansie, and Cast; the new one is mostly metal and rap metal (Limp Bizkit, Metallica), with chanteuse Tori Amos as the wild card. (As before, however, most of the songs don't appear in the movie itself.) Hans Zimmer's orchestral score for M:I-2 also has a significantly different feel than Danny Elfman's for the original; unlike Elfman, who favors an ironic post-modern update of classic '30s film scoring, Zimmer opts for a more contemporary, quasi world-beat feel.

Although the opening track, "Shout," takes on the theme of catharsis that dominated THE HURTING two years earlier, the progression evident from that debut to SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR is manifest in every other facet. While many of the band's synth-pop peers continued to develop along a linear route, Tears For Fears vaulted into the potentially insipid world of '80s MOR.
Curt Smith sings on the radio-friendly "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," but Roland Orzabal's stronger voice takes center-stage for much of the album, including the spirited single "Mother's Talk" and a falsetto on the stadium-sized "Head Over Heels." "The Working Hour" is the perfect realization of the new sound: a smooth six-minute arrangement of saxophone, piano, and guitar that's marked by a restrained sense of drama. SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR is an excellent album and, shading Simple Minds' ONCE UPON A TIME, arguably the finest example of epic '80s pop.The 1998 remastered edition includes seven bonus tracks.

Although it isn't a concept album in the conventional sense, BORBOLETTA has the aesthetic and thematic continuity of one. The lyrical material deals with pop-sheened themes of spiritual and personal expansion, while the album's gorgeous jazz-spirited instrumentals make for more cerebral and challenging listening. The band seals a Brazilian fusion connection with the appearance of vocalist Flora Purim and rhythmist extraordinaire Airto Moreira, while soulman Leon Patillo and keyboardist Tom Coster make their first major appearances in the core Santana lineup.
"Spring Manifestations" opens the album like a meditation in the jungle, with Flora and Airto conjuring up an atmospheric wildernessof sound effects. Elsewhere, the distinct soft groove of the '70s tempers the band's harder crunch of the '60s as the percussion section tames its spikes and the gentle strains of Fender-Rhodes piano dance alongside the sinewy grit of Hammond organ. "One With the Sun" features an urgent-sounding Patillo making declarations of solar harmony at the mic and Carlos shredding through a series of breathtaking guitar solos. His playing shows signs of blooming into greater subtlety and harmonic sophistication on cuts like "Flor de Canela" and "Promise of a Fisherman" with lightning-fast modal-rock runs.

THE BEST OF THE SONG BOOKS contains 16 Fitzgerald performances culled from the 8-volume, 16-CD Verve Song Book series, which spotlights Fitzgerald's interpretations of tunes by Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer and Cole Porter.
Considering the enormity of the task, the good compilers at Verve have done a fine job picking the "best" of Ella Fitzgerald's massive seven-composer Songbook series. In fact, there are more than few other collections drawn from the Songbooks, two of which, BALLADS and LOVE SONGS, previously combined with the more general THE BEST OF THE SONGBOOKS to make up a limited edition 3-CD box set. All three titles are now only available as individual discs.
That said, a representative sampler like this is an excellent place to begin exploring Fitzgerald's great recordings for Verve. The opener "Something's Gotta Give" (Mercer), "Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea" (Arlen) and "Cottontail" (Ellington) capture Ella at her most virtuosic, scat-singing to the point of abandon but still utterly relaxed and musicianly. On the slow side, fans of the Gershwins' "Love Is Here To Stay" should delight in the singer's near-definitive version as well as the other selections from her monumental Gershwin set, "'S Wonderful" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me."

Although high-living Rat Packer Dean Martin may not be the first figure one associates with the holidays, the entertainer's place in American iconography is fixed, making a Christmas record as natural as spiked eggnog and lingering under the mistletoe. CHRISTMAS WITH DINO is compiled from two earlier Martin Christmas albums (a 1953 single entitled "The Christmas Blues," the set's earliest recording, is also here). Though there are alternate versions of some songs--"White Christmas" and "Let It Snow. Let It Snow. Let It Snow." are included in their 1959 and 1966 renditions--the record moves along with the panache and swing one expects from Dino.
The arrangements are nicely balanced between big-band swing ("I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm") and string-sweetened mainstream fare ("Silver Bells"), keeping the vibe hip and traditional at once. (The choir on Martin's version of "Silent Night" adds just the right touch of reverence to the swinging fireside antics elsewhere.) Naturally, Martin's mellow, off-the-cuff singing style is paramount throughout, and his suave, dinner-jacket approachblends comfortably with the warm atmosphere of Christmas. With its swing and nostalgia factors (Martin's performances evoke a bygone American era), CHRISTMAS WITH DINO makes a great soundtrack for finger-snapping holiday fun.

On her first album of new material in over five years, Shawn Colvin's voice remains a supple, elastic thing, bending notes and phrases to suit her idiosyncratic style. Here, she once again works with producer/guitarist John Leventhal and much of the same cast of musicians that appeared on her Grammy-winning 1996 album A FEW SMALL REPAIRS. Colvin seduces the listener with rich, atmospheric washes of guitar and unabashedly pretty horn and string arrangements, while never obscuring the simple melodic statements that are the songs' foundations.
Highlights include the feisty, folk-rock title song (decked out with an instantly addictive twangy guitar hook), "Anywhere You Go," whose massed backing vocals and chorus are vaguely, but pleasantly, reminiscent of vintage Motown, and "Bound to You," which recalls RUMORS-era Fleetwood Mac. Listeners who may have been wondering what former New Bohemian Edie Brickell has been up to will be interested to know that she co-wrote this album's country-style (by way of Burt Bacharach, the Beatles, and pop psychedelia) "Roger Wilco."

When Nightmares on Wax's debut SMOKER'S DELIGHT was released on England's Mo' Wax label in 1995, it helped to solidify the label's reputation for innovative electronic dance music. Unlike the deep, uncompromising grooves of fellow Mo' Waxers like DJ Shadow though, NOW's was an unassuming, almost gentle sound. A four-year wait for the follow-up created inflated expectations that are handily met by CARBOOT SOUL.
NOW's mastermind George Evelyn laces together beats that skip nimbly alongwith subtle yet incisive elegance. Simple, unobtrusive synth lines provide much of the melodic color, aided by the occasional ethereal vocal. Funky in an engaging, often downright endearing way, CARBOOT SOUL works as both the soundtrack to an evening of relentless rump-shaking and the come-down on the morning after.

All the Blue Oyster Cult you'll ever need? Well, yeah, more or less; this two-CD chronologically arranged best-of gathers most of the band's best material from the period between 1972 and 1986. The Cult has always been something of an anomaly--brainier and quirkier than most metal bands, and unafraid to take chances, as witnessed on the potentially disastrous live version of the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" included here. The second CD, which kicks off with "Don't Fear the Reaper," and moves on to the group's poppier material, is marginally less interesting than the first CD's mutant sci-fi metal, but no matter--taken as a whole this is a first-rate career retrospective.

Neatly fitting in between 1993's GREATEST HITS and the 5-CD PLAYBACK box set that came out two years later, this 34-track collection is a chronological tour of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' MCA Records material. The consistent quality found throughout this two-CD set that's bookended by the sinister-sounding "Breakdown" and chiming "Surrender"(a song Petty wrote in the '70s but didn't get around to recording until August 2000) boggles the mind.
Tight playing and a palpable sense of passion from the four-piece Heartbreakers transform songs like "Even the Losers", "Rebels" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" into rock & roll manna. Elsewhere, this Floridian singer-songwriter's sharp eye for pop culture ("Jammin' Me") and storytelling mastery ("Into the Great Wide Open," "Two Gunslingers") become pleasantly recurring characteristics. The inclusion of a scorching live version of the Byrds' "So You Wanna Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star" show Petty and company to be as potent on stage as in the studio. By the end of this musical tour it's hard to argue with the lofty statement Cameron Crowe makes in his liner notes calling Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers "...the greatest and most consistent American band of the last twenty-five years..."

After releasing two traditional country blues albums in 1978 and 1980, Louisiana-born singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams all but disappeared for the majority of the decade. She reemerged with a self-titled third album in 1989. Williams' country blues roots are very much in evidence all over LUCINDA WILLIAMS, particularly on a scorching cover of Howlin' Wolf's "I Asked for Water (He Gave Me Gasoline)." But there's a newfound experimental urge here as well, not least in the fact that the album was originally released on the legendary British post-punk label Rough Trade. Thisbrought Williams' music out of the archivist corner and into the pop marketplace, a change heralded by the absolutely perfect pop song "Passionate Kisses"-the video for which even made it into heavy rotation on MTV's alternative music shows! This reissue includes four live traditional country blues tracks recorded in 1983 and originally found on the "Passionate Kisses" CD single.

It's difficult for American listeners to remember this, but like the recordings of the Beatles and nearly all other British groups of the '60s, the Rolling Stones' first several albums did not make it across the Atlantic in one piece. Prior to ABKCO's comprehensive 2002 reissue program, theUS versions of the Stones' early albums were the de facto standards on CD, but particularly in the case of 1966's AFTERMATH, the UK album was very different.
The track lineup is shuffled and expanded to create a much different mood. "Paint It Black" is gone, replaced as the opening track by the snotty social commentary of "Mother's Little Helper," which--when followed by "Stupid Girl," "Lady Jane," "Under My Thumb," and "Dontcha Bother Me"--is like a pentathlon of punky misogyny capped by the grinding blues jam "Goin' Home." Side Two is more emotionally varied but just as musically far-reaching, adding the poppy "Take It Or Leave It" and "What To Do" to an already strong set of tunes centered on the stunning full-length version of "Out of Time" that for some reason had never been released in the United States before this belated reissue.

Don't let this fossil from the dawn of the CD era fool you. Though it weighs in at a lightweight 35 minutes, this volume of the Island label series REGGAE GREATS features the distinctive pop reggae rhythm of Toots' first major UK hit, "Reggae Got Soul" as well as the exuberant "Sweet and Dandy." The latter combines a gospel feel with lyrics that concern hangovers after a pre-wedding celebration. This song and the glorious, skittering "Pressure Drop" (which was covered by the Clash) were featured in the seminal Jamaican reggae movie THE HARDER THEY COME.
Also included here are the later, less successful Toots efforts "Spiritual Healing" and "Peace Perfect Peace," recorded in the mid-'80s after he had parted company with Maytals Nathaniel "Jerry" Mathias and Henry "Raleigh" Gordon. The take of "54-46 Was My Number," though not without interest, is an earlier, inferior version of the '60s Maytals hit about Toots' stay in a Kingston jail for possession of marijuana. But the band's cover of John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads" ("Almost heaven, west Jamaica...") remains a delight and even decades later, there's still no denying the mighty rock-steadyrhythm of the group's first international hit, "Monkey Man."

With BLUE TRAIN, John Coltrane not only firmly established his own voice on the tenor saxophone, but also prvoed his abilities as a bandleader and composer. The musicians on BLUE TRAIN, hand-picked by Coltrane himself, play superbly not only as individuals, which is to be expected of players of such high caliber, but also as a cohesive unit--a rare occurence in an era where "all-star" bands would come together for one session, then disband just as quickly.
Coltrane burns through the opening blues, igniting the rhythm section with rapid flurries of notes and reaffirming his absolute mastery of both sound and medium. At this stage of hiscareer, Trane was still occupied with blowing over increasingly challenging chord changes. His ideas flow, flawlessly executed, logically developed and easily accessible. His unique tone can be warm and sweet or sharp and insistent, but is always amazingly expressive. Coltrane packs more emotion into one phrase than most arists are capable of in a whole tune. And with BLUE TRAIN's token ballad, "I'm Old Fashioned," he proves that he can speak volumes without being wordy.
Two of his compositions, "Moment's Notice" and "Lazy Bird," contain some of the seeds of harmonic exploration to be found in his later work. Moreover, they provide outstanding platforms, inspiring vigorous performances from the stellar band. Nineteen-year old Lee Morgan spins nice bop lines in a juicy, warm tone, belying his age with his extraordinary playing. And with the support of "Philly" Joe Jones on drums and bassist Paul Chambers (who gives an impressive bowed solo on the up-tempo "Moment's Notice"), this BLUE TRAIN does not stop.
