The Bee Gees: Maurice Gibb (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Barry Gibb (vocals, guitar, drum programming); Robin Gibb (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Dean Parks (acoustic guitar); aphael Saadiq (guitar, bass, programming, background vocals); Mike McEvoy (guitar, keyboards); Alan Kendall, Michael Thompson, Mark Schulman, Spanky Alford, Carl Verheyn, Waddy Wachtel, Carlos Alomar (guitar); Robbie Kondor (keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Jeff Bova (keyboards, synthesizer); RAlan Clark, David Foster, Rob Mounsey, Kelvin Wooten (keyboards); Steve Skinner (synthesizer); Pino Palladino, Anthony Jackson, George "Chocolate" Perry (bass); Manu Katche, Steve Jordan; Dave Halpern (drums); Ralph McDonald (tambourine); David Elliot (marching drum, tambourine); Jimmy Bralower (ride cymbal, drum programming); Florida's Singing Sons Boy Choir (background vocals). Producers include: Russ Titelman, Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb, Robin Gibb, Hugh Padgham. Engineers include: John Merchant, Dave O'Donnell, Felipe Elgueta. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. The Gibb brothers have been laying their high, vibrato-laden three-part harmonies over the pop flavor of the day for more than three decades. The trio have enjoyed incarnations as Beatle-esque '60s Brit-poppers, hairy-chested disco kings and high-tech Adult Contemporary stalwarts. In every phase of their career, the band has maintained a high standard of composition and performance, often turning out glossy, overproduced albums, but never releasing anything qualitatively inconsistent with the bulk of their work. STILL WATERS is no exception. Despitethe presence of producers like David Foster and Arif Mardin (immediate warning signs of overkill-in-progress), the brothers' Aussie harmonies are as smooth as ever, and they still know how to put together a sugary-sweet pop tune with style and class. i SKU: 1003364

Cuts Like A Knife
Personnel: Bryan Adams (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano); Keith Scott (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Tommy Mandel (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizers); Jim Vallance (keyboards, percussion); Dave Taylor (bass, background vocals); Mickey Curry (drums); Lou Gramm, Alfa Anderson, Mark Doyle (background vocals). Recorded at Little Mountain Sound, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and the Power Station, New York. Bryan Adams's second major-label release, CUTS LIKE A KNIFE, is a real step forward from his debut, rocking harder and swaggering more brashly than before. But mainly itis the solidification of the songwriting team of Adams and Jim Vallance that is most evident here. They deliver a round of readymade FM rock anthems, including the mid-tempo "This Time" and the tough yet sensitive title track, which greatly benefited from an MTV video portraying the brooding Adams in a black leather jacket. Adams also had a big hit with the earnest ballad, "Straight From the Heart." Here Adams shows off his far-reaching appeal. His brand of hard rock was brash and basic enough to win over the average Bic-igniting rock concert-goer, and with his wounded, rough-hewn look, he had what it took to be a rock heartthrob. Adams's voice has the timbre of Rod Stewart and the soulful, defiant delivery of Bob Seger and Bruce Springsteen, but he's always a lot less down in the mouth than those singers. Though he gets a bit wistful on "The Best Was Yet to Come" Adams's youthful but experienced voice presents a younger version of roots rock without the complicated subtext. SKU: 1004733

Collection, The
Yes, believe it or not, CELTIC COLLECTIONS is on K-Tel, which changed its image in the '90s from tacky compiler of haphazardly edited hits collections to a purveyor of budget-priced but sympathetically constructed anthologies featuring relative obscurities amidst the expected hits. Clannad's entry in K-Tel's CELTIC COLLECTIONS series is a good overview of this underrated Irish folk/new age band's career up to 1991. It covers both their early days playing traditional Irish folk music and their more experimental and eclectic later period, when the family group--the group's core members are the older siblings of Irish chanteuse Enya--combined their folk roots with wafting electronic keyboards and heavily overdubbed, reverbed vocals. "Harry's Game," a surprise hitdue to its use in a Volkswagen commercial in the early '90s, is both the pinnacle of this style and the collection's leadoff track. This is a fine, inexpensive introduction. SKU: 5046299

Tools In The Dryer
Initials pressings of TOOLS IN THE DRYER include a Limited Edition bonus CD. Lambchop includes: Tony Crow, William Tyler, Matt Swanson, Dennis Cronin. With nearly a dozen years of releases under their belt, Lambchop rooted around in their attic and cellar for this revealing set of odds and ends. Rather than adhering to a chronological parade, TOOLS IN THE DRYER has been smartly sequenced to shine a light on the band's aesthetic inclinations. Moody countrypolitan rubs shoulders with low-key, rural-infused urban soul. Someof these songs were b-sides, some are remixes and compilation tracks, and many have never seen the light of day before. The retrospective view allows even Lambchop's earliest songs to resonate, foreshadowing future directions. Kurt Wagner's vocals have gone from stylistic explorations to confident individuality. In the studio and on stage this ensemble creates a deep, subtle tapestry of sound. This disc is full of their wonderfully rich tonal juxtapositions, as horns blend with steel guitar, and massed electric guitars sometimes sound no louder than a light wind through a tobacco barn. We're Only In It For The Money
Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention. Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, piano); Jimmy Carl Black (vocals, trumpet, drums); Roy Estrada (vocals, electric bass); Billy Mundi (vocals, drums); Ian Underwood (woodwinds, piano); Bunk Gardner (woodwinds); Euclid James "Motorhead" Sherwood (soprano & baritone saxophones); Suzy Creamcheese, Dick Barber. Additional personnel includes: Gary Kellgren (vocals); Eric Clapton. Recorded between August and October, 1967. Originally released on Verve. The early Zappa albums were treasured by the few and totally misunderstood by the majority. The brilliant SGT. PEPPER satire of the cover should have garnered extra sales, but no. Zappa's scathing wit homed in on modern middle-class America and West Coast hippies. The album offered 19 vignettes incorporating avant garde,doo-wop, some relatively conventional pop music and a lot of hilarious dialogue that was so hip it has never dated. Zappa made us confront the obvious, and the results were alarming. These issues are best demonstrated on "What's The Ugliest Part Of Your Body," "Bow Tie Daddy," and "The Idiot Bastard Son." Late Night Sessions
Personnel includes: Pio Leiva, Perico Hernandez, Lazaro Galarraga (vocals); Dervy Rojas, Rigoberto Lopez (guitar); Pablo Mendez, Rocio Marron (violin); Orlando Maraca Valle (flute); Mike Turre (tenor saxophone); Gary Eisenberg (trumpet, trombone); Ramon Flores, Luis Eric Gonzales (trumpet); Jimmy Bosch (trombone); Jesus "Chucho" Valdes (piano); Al McKibbon (bass); Francisco Aguabella. Recorded at Private Island Trax, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Alan Geik and Nina Lenart. LATE NIGHT SESSIONS was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Performance and for Best Recording Package. These intimate, joyful sessions are the result of a thrilling reunion of master musicians from both sides of the Cuba-U.S. divide. Born out of the performances at a memorial service for radio personality Emilio Vandenedes, the supergroup Caravana Cubana links such elder giants of Afro-Cuban musicas bassist Al McKibbon, singer Pio Leiva, and pianist Chucho Valdes with younger luminaries like trombonist Jimmy Bosch and vocal quartet Bamboleo. The recording's vibrancy is surely due not only to the lineup, as musical director Jose Caridad "Perico" Hernandez wrote most of the material. "Rica y Caliente" is a merry son, driven by Carlos Del Puerto Jr.'s groovy upright bass and a gleaming violin-flute-trombone texture. Valdes opens the descarga "Chucho Carabali" with an arresting couple of solos, followed by famed composer Francisco Aguabella on timbales. "Anga y Jimmy" is another instrumental jam, with Bosch blowing fire and Pablo Mendez bowing dazzling violin lines. An entrancing offering of Afro-Cuban sacred music, "Afrekete Suite," is primarily a percussion and vocal piece. This polyrhythmic homage to the gods and saints is a stirring illustration of the enduring cultural synergy between Cuba and West Africa. SKU: 1029256

Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone
Harvey Danger: Sean Nelson (vocals); Jeff J. Lin (guitar); Aaron Huffman (bass); Evan Sult (drums). Recorded at John & Stu's Place, Seattle, Washington. One of the few Seattle bands who can't be classified under the dreaded "G" word, Harvey Danger's muse lies closer to Sebadoh than Soundgarden. The band revels in pop culture, a cynical outlook towards life and a melodic sensibility that manages tomothball some great hooks in a pool of lo-fi sensibilities and squawky guitar. Among the more notable cultural touchstones dropped in verse are the Psychic Friends Network, Rage Against The Machine and Moby Dick. Hooking up with Team Dresch producer John Goodmanson, the boys keep any kind of gloss from entering into their sound. Their break-out single "Flagpole Sitta" is anthemic in the way the Call's "Let The Day Begin" was back in the '80s. Utilizing plenty of jittery rhythms, cooing harmonies and a lo-fi guitar buzz, songs such as "Carlotta Valdez" and "Jack The Lion" make for perfect slices of pomo punk. With this kind of quirky pop sensibility and slightly cynical edge, Harvey Danger ensures that the hunt for merrymakers isn't that far a trip. SKU: 1000135

Under Cover
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Keith Richards, Ron Wood (guitar, bass, background vocals); Bill Wyman (piano, bass, percussion); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Jim Barber (guitar); Chops (horns); Ian Stewart (piano, percussion); Chuck Leavell (keyboards); Moustapha Cisse, Brahms Coundoul, Martin Ditcham (percussion); David Sanborn, Sly Dunbar. Recorded at EMI Studios, Paris, France and Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering Studios). Up until 1983's UNDERCOVER, it had been quite a long time since rock's reigning aristocracy made anything besides their status as such (and the rewards thereof) an album's theme. But with the exception of "She Was Hot," a lustful rocker that wouldn't have sounded out of place on SOME GIRLS, this year's Rolling Stones had something else on their minds. There's violence amidst the freaky reggae and soul of UNDERCOVER's grooves, a darkness unfelt on a Stones album since Altamont made them want to leave such devilish business behind. With Afro-Cuban percussion and dub textures scattered throughout, UNDERCOVER sounds like a soundtrack to a bloody Caribbean coup d'etat. The machine-gun rattle of Linndrums on "Feel On Baby," the viciously dubbed-out guitars of the title track, and Jagger's reliance on sado-masochism as a central lyrical theme ("Tie You Up" and "Pretty Beat Up" being the most obvious examples) add to the notion that the Stones were reflecting a world gone wrong back upon its audience. But past its bleakness, UNDERCOVER is among the last excitingbits of music the Stones ventured to make. SKU: 1003816

Monk's Dream
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone); John Ore (bass); Frankie Dunlop (drums). Recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, New York in 1963. Includes liner notes by Peter Keepnews. All tracks have been digitally remastered. These 1962 recordings were Thelonious Monk's first for Columbia Records, with whom he spent the most commercially successful years of his career. Mixing his own highly personalized renditions of standards with originals, this was a pattern he followed for all of his subsequent releases with the label. Of his originals, only "Bright Mississippi"had never been recorded before, but after decades of toiling in obscurity, the re-recording of tunes such as "Bolivar Blues" and "Bye-Ya" was most certainly warranted. This is in part because they'd not been heard before by most of his new and wide audience, and also because this quartet (with Charlie Rouse, John Ore and Frankie Dunlop) had been playing at this point for two years--longer than he'd ever been able to keep an ensemble together before--and they'd settled into Monk's music like one charismatic and multi-limbed being. In Utero
Nirvana: Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar); Kris Novoselic (bass); Dave Grohl (drums). Additional personnel: Kera Schaley (cello). IN UTERO was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award for BestAlternative Music Album. "All Apologies" was nominated for 1995 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and for Best Rock Song. "Teenage angst has paid off well," growls Kurt Cobain on IN UTERO's opening fusilade, "Serve The Servants," suggesting that perhaps success has spoiled Nirvana. Not! IN UTERO is a howling, defiantly punkish recording, an unsentimental throwback to an era of garage band epiphanies and raw, unadorned rock and roll. On IN UTERO, Nirvana rails against both "alternative" conformity and polished notions of commercial rock with the anthemic rage of true outcasts. Engineer-producer Steve Albini has enabled Nirvana to replicate the savage immediacy of their live sound--the sound of a band without commercial aspirations or pretensions, just thrashing away for the sheer joy of noise. Drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic play with heroic power as guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Kurt Cobain overlays their growling beat with shards of broken glass and shattered dreams. On "Scentless Apprentice" each Cobain power chord is tempered by a series of calculated dissonances and melodic fragments, while the singer bares his vulnerability and anger through Nirvana's familiar soft-hard-soft-hard structures on "Heart Shaped Box" and "Rape Me." Through his crunching guitar and elliptical lyrics on various diseases and recoveries, Cobain lays bare the turmoil and resentments, the physical and mental ailments (self-inflicted and otherwise) that have colored Nirvana's notoriety. Instead of celebrating their success, Nirvana have fashioned a powerful cautionary tale on IN UTERO, to wit: that fame, acclaim and wealth are not liberating; that music like this cannot be produced on an assembly line, then be used once and tossed on a scrap heap; that life and music was a lot more fun when they were back playing for an audience of nine in some grungy club. IN UTERO is too strong and honest to ignore. SKU: 1000432

Maxwell Unplugged
Personnel: Maxwell (vocals); G/Mo (guitar); Gloria Agostini (harp); Gerald Tarack, Matthew Raimondi, Veronica Salas (violin); Susan Poliacik (cello); Andre Roberson (saxophone); Russell Gunn (trumpet); Darrell Smith (Fender Rhodes electric piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Michael Neal (bass); Kerry Griffin (drums); Angel Luis Figueroa (percussion); Michael Dickerson, La Tina Webb, Khaliq (background vocals). Recorded live at The Brooklyn Academy Of Music, Brooklyn, New York on May 7, 1997. "Whenever Whenever Whenever" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Riding the wave of young turks delving into old-school soulthat includes D'Angelo, Eryka Badu and Adriana Evans, Maxwell's URBAN HANG SUITE heralded the arrival of a balladeer who combined Al Green's seductiveness with Prince's sensuality. MTV UNPLUGGED shows off the live side of this young free spirit whose musical roots reach through the Quiet Storm into some pretty unlikely places. Throughout this EP, the arrangements are lush, the horns caress every groove and Maxwell's creamy falsetto ducks and feints through his own "Whenever Wherever Whatever" and "The Lady Suite." He also takes time to give props to Kate Bush with a crystalline reading of "This Woman's Work." Showing off a knack for the unorthodox, Maxwell closes out the festivities with a completely transformed cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" that moves from a jazz/funk workout to a gospel feel. Red Apple Falls
Smog: Bill Callahan (vocals, guitar, piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer). Additional personnel: Ken Champion (pedal steel guitar); Thymme Jones (trumpet, piano, drums); Donna Maroni (French horn); James O'Rourke (hurdy gurdy, piano, Hammond B-3 organ, bass, drums); Matt Weston, Robot (drums). Recorded from October 30 to November 3, 1996. Like WILD LOVE and KNOCK KNOCK, RED APPLE FALLS represents the more elaborate side of Bill Callahan's discography. His outsider/loser image is still perfectly intact, but it is shaped here with a more expansive sonic palette. Everything from French horn and pedal steel to hurdy gurdy is employed on these unassumingly poetic tales of self-loathing. There's a larger cast than usual at work here, and the denser musical texture may be the reason Callahan's lyrical self-deprecation seems more like an artistic device than a desperatecry in the wilderness. The use of more natural, organic imagery in the songs, however, adds an extra level of depth to the subtle, carefully constructed lyrics. SKU: 5048353

Guerilla City (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Personnel: Guerilla Black (rap vocals); Beenie Man (rap vocals); Jazee Pha, Mario Winans, Nate Dogg, Alex Thomas, Brooke Valentine, Vonda Hope-Eaton. Producers: Mario Winans; Jazze Pha; Fredwreck Nassar; Charles Williamson; Carlos Broady. With its understated black-and-white cover, GUERILLA CITY allows Guerilla Black to let his talent do the talking, delivering one of the most refreshing debut albums of 2004. When Guerilla Black began appearing on mix tapes, comparisons to the Notorious B.I.G. popped up so frequently that he addresses and dismisses the similarities in the first lines of the record's opening track, "Hearts of Fire." In truth, Guerilla's looks are strikingly similar to those of Christopher "Biggie" Wallace; the sizeable rapper soresembles the fallen legend that it's almost surprising to note that Guerilla Black is not related to Wallace. (His given name is Charles Tony Williamson.) While Guerilla does possess a comparable relaxed style and the kind of dry wit that made Biggie Smalls huge, the Los Angeles native earns the considerable buzz his record generated, with his own remarkable skills. Guerilla Black explores the chaotic world around him with lyrical scenarios worthy of Nas, whether a stone-cold hustler with political perceptiveness on "Say What" or a tender lover pondering a future marriage with a new love on "Girlfriend." Flawlessly produced, and augmented by numerous guest shots, most notably Beenie Man on the single "Compton," GUERILLA CITY announces Guerilla Black as an important rapper on the scene. SKU: 6579706
