Afternoon In The Garden, An
AN AFTERNOON IN THE GARDEN features the entirety of Elvis' afternoon performance on June 10, 1972 at Madison Square Garden, in the middle of a three-day stand that marked his first-ever concerts in New York City. The evening show from June 10 was released in 1972 as ELVIS AS RECORDED AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN. Personnel includes: Elvis Presley, Kathy Westmoreland, The Sweet Inspirations, J.D. Sumner & The Stamps (vocals); Charlie Hodge (guitar, vocals); James Burton, John Wilkinson (guitar); Glen D. Hardin (piano); Jerry Scheff (bass). Producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on June 10, 1972. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. In June 1972, Elvis Presley returned to New York City for his first performances there since an Ed Sullivan Show appearance in late 1956. His shows at Madison Square Garden were, in fact, his first full concerts in New York: During previous visits to the Big Apple, Presley had only performed a few numbers in television studios. Accordingly, Presley's four shows at Madison Square Garden were the subject of mammoth hype, with a live album to be released one week after the stint ended. That album, ELVIS AS RECORDED AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, was recorded during the evening show on Saturday, June 10. Earlier that day Presley performed a matinee, which RCA also recorded; that show was not released until 1997, as AN AFTERNOON AT THE GARDEN (although three songs from this performance appearon ELVIS-A LEGENDARY PERFORMER VOL. 4). The matinee, like the evening show, features a mix of Elvis hits and songs first popularized by other artists, such as "For the Good Times" (Ray Price, Kris Kristofferson) and "Proud Mary" (Creedence Clearwater Revival). In fact, the lineup of songs on the two albums is nearly identical: the performances vary only slightly. SKU: 1000534

Class Of '54
Personnel: Count Basie (piano, organ); Ernie Wilkins (alto & tenor saxophones); Marshall Royal (alto saxophone, clarinet); Frank Wess (tenor saxophone, flute); Frank Foster (tenor saxophone); Charlie Fowlkes (baritone saxophone); Wendell Culley, Reunald Jones, Thad Jones, Joe Newman (trumpet); Henry Coker, Bill Hughes, Benny Powell (trombone); Freddie Green (guitar); Ed Jones (bass); Gus Johnson (drums). Recorded in Boston on September 7, 1954 and at the American Legion Park in Ephrata, Pennsylvania on September 2, 1954. Includes liner notes by Barry McRae. World War Two, apart from being somewhat disruptive to the rest of humanity, also brought about the disruption of many big bands. It's no wonder Basie decided to venture out with a scaled down group in 1950. But 1954 was to mark yet another change for the legendary bandleader. It was to be his last effort with a small group for the next eight years, and the beginning of a renewed success forhis big band. CLASS OF '54 represents the two bands that Basie spearheaded in 1954. The first is a nonet, and the second is his usual full orchestra. On the nonet portion of the disc, trumpeter Joe Newman is featured on "Confessin" and flute innovator Frank Wess is featured on "In Case You Didn't Know" and "Peter Pan." The big band portion of this album retains much of the feel and mood of Basie's first band from the mid 1930's. However, the emphasis now switches to ensemble precision and clear cut, highly composed arrangements. Nonetheless, the deep pocketed swing that Basie alone epitomizes here remains vital to the band's sound. SKU: 6520317

Pig Lib
Initial pressings of PIG LIB included a bonus CD including five tracks. Personnel: Stephen Malkmus (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Mike Clark (guitar, keyboards); Joanna Bolme (bass, background vocals); John Moen (drums, background vocals). Principally recorded at Bear Creek Studios, Woodinville, Washington between May & August 2002. For his second solo outing after leaving Pavement, Stephen Malkmus expands his musical horizons a bit from his 2001 solo debut, which basically sounded like an extension of his former band's sound. It's only naturally that Malkmus' work should bear some similarities with the output of his erstwhile group, since he played a major role in fashioning their style, and the non-sequitir lyricism and skewed, angular alt-rock that marked the Pavement style are still strongly in evidence. However, there are other elements at work on PIG LIB. Mostly, it sounds like noted music geek Malkmus has been listening to esoteric '70s UK outfits like progressive blues-rockers the Groundhogs and folk-rock cult heroes Steeleye Span (or perhaps Fairport Convention). The knotty, stately guitar lines that twist their way around many of the songs and intertwine with the vocal melodies are redolent of the beard-rock world inhabited by folks like the aforementioned groups. The sound makes a nice fit for the former lo-fi king, providing a refreshing change of pace that's subtle enough not to seem drastic or crass, but substantial enough to suggest that Malkmus's musical growth was not stunted by the death of Pavement. Hanson: Isaac Hanson(vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Taylor Hanson (vocals, piano, Wurlitzer piano, organ, keyboards, percussion); Zachary Hanson (vocals, drums). Additional personnel includes: Greg Wells (acoustic guitar, bass); David Garza (guitar); Abraham Laboriel, Kevin Wyatt (bass); Luis Conte (djembe). Producers: Greg Wells, Bob Marlette, Danny Kortchmar, Hanson. Additional personnel: David Garza. Hanson's third studio album, UNDERNEATH, finds the boys striking an engaging balance between the classic rock moves they explored on 2000's THIS TIME AROUND and the gleeful pop of MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, their hit 1997 debut. With help from power-pop icon Matthew Sweet (on the title track), singer/songwriter David Garza, and Gregg Alexander of the New Radicals, Hanson delivers a potent mix of mature lyricism, feel-good rhythms, and the kind of glorious three-part harmonies that only sibling groups can pull off. Sporting melodies that echo every devotee of the perfect hook from Harry Nilsson to Stevie Wonder, UNDERNEATH not only reveals Hanson to be an increasingly formidable band, it also shows brothers Isaac, Taylor, and Zachary having fun in the process. Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy
Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Velma Middleton (vocals); Trummy Young (trombone); Barney Bigard (clarinet); Billy Kyle (piano); Arvell Shaw (bass); Barrett Deems (drums). Compilation producer: George Avakian. Recorded from July 12-14, 1954 and October 19, 1956. Includes liner notes by George Avakian. This wonderful and historically monumental recording pairs the master of jazz trumpet and jazz singing with "the father of the blues." In the early years of the 20th century, composer W.C. Handy authored many blues numbers, some of which have gone on not only to become enduring standards in the genre, but also to influence a vast repertoire of popular music. Armstrong, who achieved some of his earliest successes with treatments of Handy favorites, is in superior form on this recording. Perhaps due to Handy's presence at the sessions (the booklet is full of wonderful photos of the two), Satch seems even morefocused and full of enthusiasm than usual. With excellent support from a band that includes Trummy Young (trombone), Barney Bigard (clarinet), and Velma Middleton (vocals), Armstrong and Co. interpret such Handy favorites as "The Memphis Blues," "Beale Street Blues," and the immortal "St. Louis Blues." The CD appends five previously unreleased tracks and an interview with Handy, making this set immeasurably worthwhile, in terms of both historic importance and entertainment value. SKU: 1000567

En Route (Live)
John Scofield Trio: John Scofield (guitar); Steve Swallow (bass); Bill Stewart (drums). Recorded at The Blue Note, New York, New York in December 2003. EN ROUTE captures guitarist John Scofield performing in a trio setting at the Blue Note in New York City. Given the group format and the venue, it's not surprisingthat EN ROUTE reveals the more jazz-oriented side of Scofield's aesthetic than the punchy funk workouts he turned out in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Scofield's energetic playing has rarely sounded better than in the illustrious company of bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart, however, and the result is a solid, complex, and thoroughly enjoyable study in dynamic group interplay. The program consists mostly of tunes written by Scofield, with Swallow's frantic, bop-styled "Name That Tune" and a lush cover of Burt Bacharach/Hal David's "Alfie" thrown in for good measure. Stewart's quick-wristed drumming style, which sometimes makes him sound like several percussionists at once, creates a dense, polyrhythmic backdrop to Swallow's furious, agile lines and Scofield's fleet-fingered leads. There are touches of soul-jazz ("Wee"), bluesy swing ("Bag"), and laid-back funk ("Over Big Top"), but the true order of the day is dense, nervous post-bop. The synthesis of modes and the extraordinary chemistry of the trio make this one of Scofield's most satisfying straightforward-jazz efforts. SKU: 6557525

Body And Soul
Personnel includes: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (vocals); Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, Irshad Ali (vocals, harmonium); Rahat Ali Khan (vocals);Dildar Hussain (tabla); Ilyas Hussain, Naseef Ahmed, Khaled Mehmood (background vocals). Recorded at Sargam Studio, Lahore, Pakistan. There was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan the world's most revered Sufi devotional singer, and then there was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, International Pop Sensation. Real World Records was responsible for the second incarnation, and this, his final release for the label, is a fitting tribute to the charismatic artist. Recorded in Pakistan shortly before his 1997 death, BODY AND SOUL was mastered at Real World's British studios and released in 2002. The vibrant production bursts with joy and color, making the most of a simple ensemble: harmonium, tablas, Khan's rock star intensity, and his feisty backing chorus or "party." The songs include one traditional Qawaali hymn and three modern poems set to music, exploring secular love as a metaphor for the mystical relationship between God and man. SKU: 1064544

Trout Mask Replica
Full performer name: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band: Captain Beefheart (vocals, soprano & tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, simran horn, musette); Antennae Jimmy Stevens (vocals, guitar); The Mascara Snake (vocals, bass clarinet); Rockette Morton (narration, bass); Zoot Horn Rollo (guitar, flute); Doug Moon (guitar); John "Drumbo" French (drums). Previously released as a 2-LP set. A great, sprawling, discordant work of genius--TROUT MASK REPLICA gives the lie to the frequent criticism that all double albums are exercises in self indulgence. Or perhaps in Captain Beefheart's case it's impossible to separate the self indulgence from the meaningful art--certainly the pieces you may feel on first listening to be the most excessively obscure are those that keep you coming back for more. Embedded in this influential, messy, confusing yet brilliant enterprise are a plethora of sui generis gems such as "Ella Guru" and "Neon Meate Dream of a Octafish," though "China Pig" with its electric bluesaccompaniment finds Beefheart harking back to his Howlin' Wolf roots, and "Well" is similarly rooted in old Southern work songs--though obviously as sung by Salvador Dali. The sound is by turns murky, amateurish, and compellingly powerful. The Magic Band churns and twists under the Captain's direction, and on tracks such as "When Big Joan Sets Up," rocks as fiercely as Cecil Taylor. But be warned--after hearing TROUT MASK REPLICA, you'll never be able to listen to music in quite the same way again. SKU: 1000632

Minor Move [Remastered]
Personnel: Tina Brooks (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Sonny Clark (piano); Doug Watkins (bass); Art Blakey (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on March 16, 1958. Originally released on Blue Note (3072). Includes liner notes by Lawrence Kart and Michael Cuscuna. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series. While saxophonist Tina Brooks did have a very long career on the modern jazz scene, the small number of recordings that he made are as impressive as those of the many others of his ilk. Of his handful of recordings as a leader for Blue Note, his debut, MINOR MOVE, is a treasure and a must for collectors who clamor for all the available cuts by this mostly unsung jazz hero. Now on CD, MINOR MOVE is a testament to the great things Brooks had to offer and the unfortunate brevity of his career. To say Brooks was a master of fluidity is an understatement. Hiseffortless agility on such swinging cuts as the opener, "Nutville," and especially on a blistering read of the classic "The Way You Look Tonight" is the perfect counterpart to Lee Morgan's brassy trumpet shots. Brooks blows strong and clean on the standard "Star Eyes," showcasing his particular knack for flawless melodic invention. As a bonus, Brooks' dynamic title cut is presented in two takes here, allowing for even more of a look at the nearly forgotten abilities of this impressive hard-bop stylist. It is a worthy prize for any collection of the golden era. SKU: 1075438

Faust (Original Soundtrack)
Personnel includes: Randy Newman (vocals, conductor, piano, synthesizer); James Taylor, Don Henley, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, BonnieRaitt, Kristyn Liang-Chen (vocals); Ry Cooder, Waddy Watchel, Mark Goldenberg, Michael Landau, Michael Thompson, Bob Mann, John Goux (guitar); Doug Livingston (pedal steel); Steve Tavaglione (saxophone); Randy Kerber (piano, Hammond B-3, synthesizer); Benmont Tench (harmonium, Hammond B-3 organ); Randy Waldman (organ, synthesizer); Bill Payne (Hammond B-3 organ); Robbie Buchanan (synthesizer); Leland Sklar, Larry Klein, James Hutchinson, Jimmy Johnson (bass); Jim Keltner, Kenny Aronoff, Carlos Vega, Denny Carmassi (drums); Michael Fisher (percussion); Mark Mann, Eric Persing (programming). Producers: Peter Asher, Don Was. Engineers: Frank Wolf, George Massenburg, Ed Cherney. Recorded between February 10, 1993 and June 1, 1995. The legend of Faust has inspired everyone from Goethe to Thomas Mann. Newman's first foray into musical theater, FAUST stumbled a bit on its way out of the starting gate and to date, aside from workshop performances, hasn't materialized on any major stage. However, Newman gathered an array of friends to record the work, including James Taylor, Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt and Elton John. Newman, not unpredictably, casts himself as the Devil, once God's favorite archangel, trying to regain favor from the picky Lord (Taylor) and return to his former heavenly home. A wry lyricist and vocalist with a rare sense of timing and nuance, Newman makes dubious lines like "The man who shot you in the head in that Burger King in Tuscon" work as sheer comedy. But in the more kindly hands of Taylor and Ronstadt, the humor falls short. Raitt, an off-color jokester herself, fares far better. Nevertheless, it's the biting wit of Newman that shines through, from the rolling ragtime of "Can't Keep A Good Man Down" to the bluesy dialogue between the Devil and Margaret in "Bleeding All Over the Place." Level 2 [PA]
Blackstreet: Teddy Riley, Chauncey Hannibal, Mark Middleton, Eric Williams. Additional personnel includes: Mystikal, Mr. Cheeks. Recorded at Future Recording Studios, Virginia Beach, Virgina. Blackstreet may have broken up over creative differences and corporate reshuffling at their label after the release of 1999's FINALLY, but the lure of working within a group format again proved too much for Teddy Riley, who reformed the group for 2003's LEVEL II. Riley's status as the father of new jack swingmeans these 17 songs bristle with the kinds of grooves and beats that found his trademark sound serving as the bridge between the electro-funk of the '80s and hip-hop-driven R&B of the '90s. Peppered with plenty of scenarios of pursuit and seduction, some of Riley's more overt musical innuendoes include a moanin' remake of a Rose Royce track re-titled "Ooh Girl," the future Quiet Storm classic "Deep" where Chauncey Hannibal makes like Prince with a vocoder, and rhyme-driven jam "She's Hot." To avoid looking like incorrigible playas, the gentlemen of Blackstreet also include a fair amount of more romantic overtures like the straightforward, harmony-soaked declaration "Baby You're All I Want" and the lush "You Made Me," with its gospel-flavored overtones. Helping do some of the heavy lifting are special guests Mystikal on the closing beat-fest "Wizzy Wow" and original Blackstreet member Dave Hollister on the Babyface-like acoustic ballad "Bygones." Peter Gabriel Vol.4 [Remastered]
SECURITY was released in some editions as the fourth Peter Gabriel album entitled simply PETER GABRIEL. Personnel: Peter Gabriel (vocals, keyboards, drums, Linn programming, CMI, Ethiopian pipes); David Rhodes (guitar, background vocals, Ethiopian pipes); John Ellis (guitar); Roberto Laneri (treated saxophone); Peter Hammill (Ethiopian pipes); Larry Fast, David Lord (keyboards); Tony Levin (bass, Chapman Stick); Jerry Marotta (drums); Ekone Dance Company (Ghanian drums); Morris Pert (timbales, percussion); Stephen Paine (CMI); Jill Gabriel (background vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered. SECURITY picks up on the structural advances made on Gabriel's previous album (the third of his untitled solo recordings), by combining his creepy, quirky, post-art rock leanings with Third World-rhythmic patterns. A successful fusion of the modern (synths, heavily-processed guitars) and the ancient (tribal rhythms, lyrical themes that reach into the ancestral memories of various cultures), SECURITY was both Gabriel's most sophisticated and most accessible work to date. Infectious, funky rhythmsallow mega-hit "Shock The Monkey" and the propulsive "Kiss Of Life" to transcend Gabriel's more cerebral tendencies, exploring the visceral end of things. While there's a celebratory feel to much of the music here, tunes like "The Rhythm of the Heat" reach back to the darker, ominous tone of Gabriel's last album, but throughout SECURITY, Gabriel sounds like a man who's been liberated from the constraints of his old habits, dancing up a storm without ever losing sight of his conceptual/thematic goals. Marshall Crenshaw [Remastered]
MARSHALL CRENSHAW also contains B-sides of singles, demos & live tracks. Personnel: Marshall Crenshaw (vocals, various instruments, guitar, bass, percussion); Chris Donato (vocals, bass); Robert Crenshaw (vocals, drums); Tony Garnier (bass); Michael Osborn, Richard Gottehrer (percussion). Producers: Richard Gottehrer, Marshall Crenshaw, Scott Miner. Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in January 1982. Originally released on Warner Brothers (3673). Includes liner notes by Marshall Crenshaw & David Gorman. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot. Marshall Crenshaw's self-titled debut was a great breath of fresh air when it appeared in 1982. Full of pop smarts, it drew on the chimey pop melodicism of the '60s without sounding the slightest bit "retro." Crenshaw came to public attention in the cast of Beatlemania in the late seventies (playing the part of John Lennon), a circumstance born of his long-standing love of the Fab Four. Millions cut their teeth on British Invasion bands, but for Crenshaw, the lessons became part of his musical foundation--which is why it doesn't sound likehe's aping his idols. Crenshaw is a music fan who developed into a first class songwriter. The flawlessly tight band runs through these dozen songs--churning out a hit parade of their own device. Catchy and infectiously hook-filled, this album can make friends with anybody. Start with this one, then move onto his next, and his next, and his next... SKU: 1044151

Next Album
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); George Cables (piano); Bob Cranshaw (bass); Jack De Johnette, David Lee (drums); Arthur Jenkins (congas, percussion). Recorded at Mercury Sound Studios, New York, New York in July 1972. Originally released on Milestone (9042). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1987, Fantasy Studios). With the recording of NEXT ALBUM in July of 1972, the tenor giant returned to the jazz scene refreshed and recharged by the last of his extended spiritual sabbaticals. Never again would this great improviser turn his back on an adoring public, but such was the intensity of their love that henceforth every nuance of his playing was subjected to the most thorough scrutiny imaginable, and made to stand comparison with the Sonny Rollins of the late '50s and mid-60s. NEXT ALBUM is a joyous recital, and the saxophonist performs with renewed power and conviction. "Playin' In The Yard" opens with an earthy concoction of calypso and R&B elements, goosed along by the electric rhythm cushion of pianist George Cables and bassist Bob Cranshaw, as drummer Jack DeJohnette offers up his distinctively jazzy variations on a contemporary backbeat. On "Poincinana," Rollins explores the classic ballad's lush changes on a curved soprano saxophone, with its distinctive tone and quirky intonation, while Cables and drummer David Lee engage in a freewheeling dialogue underneath. In his cat and mouseapproach to the groove, Rollins hints at the kinds of rhythmic/harmonic brinkmanship that would distinguish his live shows by decade's end. "The Everywhere Calypso" is a classic Rollins take on the folk antecedents of his Virgin Islands' forebearers. His cutting attack, extravagant tonal variations and sly harmonic twists give each fresh chorus a heady air of inevitability. "Keep Hold Of Yourself" finds Rollins engaged in a hard bop chase over a Coltraneish set of rhythm changes, and he responds with preaching, incantory figures before leaving the rhythm section behind in his reverie. On "Skylark," Rollins opens and closes with stunning impromptu lines, which grow more complex and fervent with each chorus. This peak performance shows that Rollins' tone has grown larger, his timbre more grainy and complex, while his harmonic sensibilities hint at new levels of virtuosity--the sound of an explorer commited to growth.
