Best Of Whitesnake, The
Personnel includes: David Coverdale (vocals); Micky Moody (electric & slide guitars); John Sykes, Mel Galley (guitar, background vocals); Dan Huff, Steve Vai (guitar); David Rosenthal, Don Airey, Bill Cuomo,Jon Lord, Claude Gaudette, Alan Pasqua (keyboards); Neil Murray, Rudy Sarzo (bass); Aynsley Dunbar, Denny Carmassi, Cozy Powell, Tommy Aldridge (drums); Tommy Funderburk, The Fabulosa Brothers, Richard Page, The Big 'Eads, Glenn Hughes (background vocals). Producers: Mike Stone, Keith Olsen, Martin Birch, Mike Clink. Includes liner notes by Sal Manna. Over the course of three albums (1984's SLIDE IT IN, 1987's WHITESNAKE, and 1989's SLIP OF THE TONGUE), Whitesnake became one of the '80s' biggest hard rock bands. The best tracks of the aforementioned albums serve as the basis for 1994's 14-track GREATEST HITS collection. Despite its many incarnations throughout the decade (macho singer David Coverdale being the only constant member), Whitesnake kept its game plan pretty constant--Led Zep-like rockers were followed by big power ballads, spelling massive chart success. Standouts here include the heavies "Still of the Night," "Love Ain't No Stranger," "Slow An' Easy," and "Fool For Your Loving," the softer "Is This Love," and tracks such as "Here I Go Again" that lie somewhere in the middle. Guns In The Ghetto
UB40: Ali Campbell, Robin Campbell (vocals, guitar); Brian Travers (soprano, tenor & baritone saxophones) Michael Virtue (keyboards, cello, vocals); Earl Falconer (bass, keyboards); James Brown (drums); Norman Hassan (percussion, vocals). Additional personnel: Martin Meredith (soparano & alto saxophones); Laurence Parry (trumpet, flugelhorn, valve trombone); Dan Armstrong (keyboards, programming); Ruby Turner, Simone Sauphanor (background vocals). Recorded at Kuff Studios, Jamaica; Dep International Studios, Birmingham, England. Recording primarily at Jamaica's Kuff Studios, UB40 used the surrounding island as a muse in lending their friendly pop/reggae sound a grittier edge. A heavy dub vibe permeates "Always There" while"Hurry Come Up" uses a rapid, lo-fi rhythm track to lend a dance-hall flavor. A small Jamaican town that's remained unchanged for 200 years inspired "Oracabessa Moonshine" while the title track came about after listening to the anti-gun campaign of an Ochos Rios radio station. Although UB40 strays into more eclectic territory this time around, GUNS IN THE GHETTO also reflects the band's crossover sensibilities. This comes across particularly on the lush ragga-ballad "Lisa" and the retro, Lisa Stansfield-sounding "I Really Can't Say." SKU: 1076517

Speak Of The Devil
Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Brad Gillis (guitar); Rudy Sarzo (bass); Tommy Aldridge (drums). Recorded live at the Ritz, New York, New York on September 26 & 27, 1982. Originally released as a 2-LP set. Digitally remastered by Brian Lee & Bob Ludwig. Released in September 1982, DEVIL is Ozzy's third solo album and first live one. Recorded at NYC's Ritz, it closes a chapter in Ozzy's career with an all-Black Sabbath set, actually competing against his former bandmates as they released LIVE EVIL just a few months later. Ozzy's performance is as spirited as ever, and the Sabbath classics come across tight and rock solid. Opening with "Symptom Of The Universe," one of the finest metal compositions ever, the album pulls you into Ozzy's wacky and twisted world for the duration of the show. This remastered edition (with superb clarity) features the previously omitted "Sweet Leaf," Sabbath's ode to herbalremedy. Osbourne's last recorded song with Sabbath, the ironically titled "Never Say Die" is rocked with renewed vigor by the ace band of Brad Gillis, Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge. The group and the over-the-top Manhattan crowd seem to play off each other. If you're a Sabbath or Ozzy fan, you need to purchase DEVIL, a sonic souvenir of a classic gig. SKU: 1014172

Complete Capitol Recordings, The
Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Everett Barksdale (guitar); Slam Stewart (bass). Producer: F.M. Scott III. Compilation producers: Michael Cuscuna, Pete Welding. Recorded in Los Angeles, California between 1949 and 1952. Includes liner notes by Pete Welding. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Look up "jazz piano" in the dictionary and don't be surprised if you see the beatific visage of Art Tatum, the man who is truly the definition of that term. Tatum was the primary influence on nearly every majorjazz pianist, including McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson and Dave Brubeck. His Capitol recordings, mostly solo works performed in 1949 plus a few trio numbers cut in '52, amply demonstrate the sensitivity and sophistication that were his trademarks. The tunes he recorded for Capitol were mostly ballads, which he redefined through his innovative harmonic sensibilities and his assured-but-fluid rhythms . SKU: 3104981

Our Favourite Things
Full performer name: Tony Bennett/Charlotte Church/Placido Domingo/Vanessa Williams. Personnel includes: Tony Bennett, Charlotte Church, Placido Domingo, Vanessa Williams (vocals); Steven Mecurio (conductor); Ralph Sharon Quartet; Gumpoldskirchner Spatzen Children's Choir; Vienna Symphony. Recorded live at the Konzerthaus, Vienna, Austria in December 2000. This stellar line-up, recorded live in Vienna, performs a program of quintessential Christmas songs in a rich variety of styles, from the light pop of "My Favorite Things" to traditional Spanish tunes such as "Hacia Belen Va Un Burro" and English equivalents like "Angels We Have Heard on High." Tony Bennett kicks the whole thing off with a typically warm rendition of "The Christmas Song." He's followed by a pretty straight reading of "O Holy Night" by the Welsh teen classical prodigy Charlotte Churchand the inimitable Placido Domingo, and Vannessa Williams' gospel-tinged version of "Do You Hear What I Hear" It's an evening of familiar favorites, impeccably performed, with the added bonus of the Gumpoldskirchner Spatzen Children's Choir providing an appropriately child's-eye view of the holiday. OUR FAVORITE THINGS is a worthy addition to the bulging repertoire of Christmas collections, in a gimmick-free traditional setting. SKU: 1069360

Dave Holland Quartet: Dave Holland (bass); Steve Coleman (alto saxophone); Kevin Eubanks (guitar); Marvin "Smitty" Smith (drums). Recorded at Power Station, New York, New York in September 1989. Dave Holland's most notable work with a guitarist in the past was with John Abercrombie, and their collective trio Gateway with drummer Jack DeJohnette. For this set his quartet includes guitarist Kevin Eubanks, along with longtime musical cohorts Steve Coleman on alto saxophone and Marvin "Smitty" Smith on drums. The album opens and closes with compositions by Eubanks. "Nemesis" is a fairly straightforward post-bop structure that lets everyone strut their wares in fine form. "Color of Mind" is unapologetically funky, and provides a perfect rhythmic bed for Coleman to sail over with glee. Holland's two pieces, "Processional" and "The Oracle" are both subtle and atmospheric, providing a fine contrast to the greater rhythmic density of the other tunes. Coleman, whose been writing a piece or two on most of Holland's albums he appears on, here offers two of his most contrasting numbers. "Black Hole" adheres to his angular and propulsivestandards, while "101 Degrees Fahrenheit (Slow Meltdown)" employs mysterious and cinematic dramatics. SKU: 3103683

Roses In The Snow (Remastered & Expanded)
Personnel: Emmylou Harris (vocals, acoustic guitar); Ricky Skaggs (vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle); Linda Ronstadt (vocals); Tony Rice (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Frank Reckard, Barry Tashian (acoustic guitar); Albert Lee (electric guitar, mandolin); Brian Ahern (guitar, synthesizer, bass, percussion); Willie Nelson (guitar); Steve Fishell (steel guitar); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Wayne Goodwin (mandolin); Bryan Bowers (autoharp); Jim Horn (recorder, penny whistle); Buck White (piano, background vocals); Glen D. Hardin (Fender Rhodes piano); Emory Gordy, Jr. (bass); Keith Knudsen (drums); John Ware (percussion); Dolly Parton, Cheryl White, Sharon White (background vocals). Recorded in July 1979. Originally released on Warner Brothers (3422). Includes liner notes by Holly George Warren. All tracks have been digitally remastered. On her sixth country album, ROSES IN THE SNOW, Emmylou Harris decided to explore her growing interest in bluegrass music. It wasa bold move: first, because bluegrass had traditionally been the exclusive domain of men (Hazel Dickens being the most notable exception to the rule), and second, because it meant breaking with a formula that had served her well on her five previous releases. Harris tilted the odds back in her favor by assembling an all-star supporting cast including Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, and the Whites, then selecting--with usual impeccable taste--10 great songs for inclusion on the album. As one would expect, Harris salutes the masters of bluegrass here, reworking numbers associated with Ralph Stanley ("The Darkest Hour is Just Before the Dawn"), Bill Monroe ("Wayfaring Stranger") and Flatt and Scruggs ("I'll Go Stepping Too"). Digging even further back, she also comes up with, and delivers on, A.P. Carter's "Gold Watch and Chain" and Bill Halley's "Miss the Mississippi and You," both vestiges of recorded music's earliest era. It's not all ancient history, however: ROSES also includes a hit version of Paul Simon's "The Boxer," miraculously recast as a bluegrass-friendly number. SKU: 1073833

Stage (Live/Remastered) [Digipak]
Cassettes available on Rykodisc (0144/45). Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, Chamberlain); Carlos Alomar (guitar); Adrian Belew (guitar, background vocals); Simon House (electric violin); Sean Mayes (piano, strings, background vocals); Roger Powell (keyboards, background vocals); George Murray (bass, background vocals); Dennis Davis (drums, percussion). Track 10 on disc 2 did not appear on the original release of STAGE. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, chamberlin); Adrain Belew, Carlos Alomar (guitar, background vocals); Simon House (violin); Sean Mayes (piano, background vocals); Roger Powell (keyboards, synthesizer); George Murray (bass guitar, background vocals); Dennis Davis (drums). Recording information: 1978. Emerging from his self-imposed exile in Berlin, David Bowie assembled a new band and took to the road to promote his Berlin-recorded albums, LOW and HEROES. STAGE chronicles that 1977 tour, and captures Bowie at one of the most creative periods of his career. Though STAGE was criticizedfor having somewhat lackluster sound when it was originally released, the remastered CD versions present a noticeable improvement over the original album. STAGE breaks Bowie's concert into two parts. The first CD features urgent versions of some of Bowie's best-known songs, including "Ziggy Stardust," "Fame," and "Hang On to Yourself." The second CD is devoted exclusively to the songs from LOW and HEROES. Though songs like the anthemic "Heroes" are well-suited to the live format, others, like the ominous instrumental "Warsawza" and the futuristic "Speed of Life" are not your typical concert fare. Still, Bowie performs gripping versions of these challenging tunes, and guitarist Adrian Belew is especially good on this material. While STAGE may not be the definitive Bowie live album, it offers a fascinating look at the artist as he stretches the boundaries of sound and stage for what was perhaps the last time in his career. (Note: The 2005 reissue features a different track order and two bonus tracks.) SKU: 6583795

Blessed Hellride, The
Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society: Zakk Wylde (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); Craig Nunenmacher (drums). Additional personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals). Recorded at Paramount Studios, Hollywood, California; Cartee Day Studios, Nashville, Tennessee, Amerayacan Studios, North Hollywood, California. Nu-metal be damned; Zakk Wylde might say there's only one kind of metal, and that's "heavy." On THE BLESSED HELLRIDE, the ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist's Black Label Society attempts to create nothing less than the ultimate mullet-sporting high school headbanger's dream album. Fans of old school, "strap on Les Paul/insert into Marshall stack/rock like hell" thrash mayhem will find a lot to love here, from the raw, aggressive monster guitar and drum sounds to the Black Sabbath-via-Judas Priest gargantuan riffs. The lyrics pretty much stick to the metal essentials: drugs, evil, supernatural forces, death, and oh yeah, more drugs. For those who find nu-metal suspiciously lacking in heft, THE BLESSED HELLRIDE providesa welcome fix of the hard stuff. SKU: 1083259

Night At The Opera, A
Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano); Brian May (guitar, harp, ukulele, background vocals); John Deacon (electric piano, acoustic & electric basses);Roger Taylor (percussion, background vocals). Recorded at Sarm Studios, Roundhouse Studios, Olympic Studios, Scorpio Studios, Landsdowne Studios, London, England and Rockfield Studios, Wales. Though they began their career practicing an artier, more theatrical variant on the Led Zeppelin heavy rock sound, Queen was always capable of much more. Ultimately, Freddie and the boys were popsters at heart, and capable ones to boot. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA is where they begin to show their eclecticism and compositional facility. The album title is probably a reference to the FM rock anthem "Bohemian Rhapsody," which begins as an existential ballad before moving into a mock-operatic section featuring scores of overdubbed Freddie Mercurys. "Rhapsody" is just the tip of the iceberg here. "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" is a music hall ditty that owes a debt to the Kinks. "'39" is a surprisingly poignant folk-rocker written and sung by Brian May. "You're My Best Friend" is pure '70s AM melodic pop. Queen even ventures into vaudeville territory (given Mercury's show biz leanings, not as much of a stretch as one might think) on the fatalistic, old-timey "Good Company." There are several souped-up rockers here as well, but it's A NIGHT AT THE OPERA's winning stylistic experimentation that makes it a milestone in Queen history. SKU: 1039657

Sonny Rollins And The Big Brass [Remastered]
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Ernie Wilkins (arranger, conductor); Ernie Royal, Clark Terry, Reunald Jones (trumpet); Nat Adderley (cornet); Jimmy Cleveland, Billy Byers, Frank Rehak (trombone); Don Butterfield (tuba); John Lewis, Dick Katz (piano); Rene Thomas (guitar); Henry Grimes, Percy Heath (bass); Roy Haynes, Connie Kay, Specs Wright (drums). Producer: Leonard Feather. Reissue producer: Ben Young. Recorded at Beltone Studios, New York, New York on July 10, 1958; Metropolitan Studios, New York, New York on July 11, 1958; Music Inn, Lenox, Massachusetts on August 3, 1958. Includes liner notes by Ben Young, Loren Schoenberg and Leonard Feather. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios). This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. This session smokes from the get-go. Rarely has the juxtaposition of bop stylings against an orchestral format worked so successfully, but the change of context seems to push the always superior Rollins to even greater heights. A rhythm section of guitar, bass, drums, and piano drives an enormous brass section through arranger/conductor Ernie Watkins' stirring (though somewhat "straight") charts of such classics as "Body and Soul," "You Are Too Beautiful," and "Love Is A Simple Thing." Rollins, who at the time of this recording was already being recognized as the most important tenor player to emerge from the post-bop school, plays anything but straight. His audacious, magnificent tone and blistering technique turn melodies inside out, searching for their hidden meanings with a grace and depth of feeling that can only come from the finest of artists. SONNY ROLLINSAND THE BIG BRASS is a classic jazz recording that mixes old-school big-band swing and progressive bop in a refreshing, unique blend that is sure to appeal to fans of both genres. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums). 1974's SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is widely considered to be Black Sabbath's last true classic album. The musical experimentation that began on 1972's VOL. 4 was continued here, but this time it took the form of subtle synthesizer colorings (instead of VOL. 4's tranquil ballads). And whereas its predecessor didn't contain a true, instantly recognizable Sabbath anthem (save for "Snowblind"), SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH's title track resumed the quartet's penchant for penning heavy metal compositions that sounded like they were tailor made for being blasted in a huge arena. While the title track is the album's best-known song, SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH proved to be another in a long line of 100% filler-free records from Ozzy and co. Highlights included the creepy "Who Are You?," plus the Tony Iommi riff-mongers "A National Acrobat," "Killing Yourself to Live," and "Sabra Cadabra," a song that Metallica would cover on its 1998 release GARAGE INC. You'll also find one of Sabbath's most haunting yet serene instrumentals, "Fluff," as well as the melodic album-closing rocker, "Spiral Architect." SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is quintessential heavy metal. SKU: 1045981

Third Album, The/Sister Lovers
Big Star: Alex Chilton (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Jody Stephens (drums). Additional personnel: Lesa Aldridge (vocals); Lee Baker, Steve Cropper (guitar); Carl Marsh (reeds, woodwinds, synthesizer); Jim Dickinson (mellotron, bass, drums); John Lightman, Jimmy Stephens, Tommy Cathey, William Murphey, Tommy McClure (bass); Richard Roseborough, Tarp Tarrant (drums). Engineers include: Jim Dickinson, John Fry, Richard Roseborough. Recorded at Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Rick Clark. Big Stars's third album, THIRD (also known as SISTER LOVERS) was recorded in 1974 but not released until 1978 and was never widely available. 2 bonus tracks have been added. After Big Star released RADIO CITY, they fellapart, leaving Alex Chilton to record in 1975 what was later released as THIRD (AKA SISTER LOVERS). The album is strikingly different from everything Chilton has done before or since. With pained outpourings such as the haunting "Holocaust," it holds its own against rock's greatest monuments to existential angst, from TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT to BRYTER LATER. It also ranks alongside the Beach Boys' SMILE as perhaps the only "classic" album with no set sequence. Chilton never bothered to sequence it because, upon its completion, no label wanted to release it. It finally came out four years later, and since then, while it has appeared on several labels, no two have used the same track order. SKU: 1007034

Essential Elvis Vol.4 (A Hundred Years From Now)
Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); James Burton, Chip Young (guitar); Charlie McCoy (harmonica, organ, guitar); David Briggs (piano); Norbert Putnam (bass); Jerry Carrigan, Kenneth Buttrey (drums). The Imperials: Jim Murray, Greg Gordon, Terry Blackwood, Armond Morales, Joe Moscheo (background vocals). Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Recorded at RCA's Studio B, Nashville, Tennessee between June 4, 1970 and June 8,1971. Includes liner notes by Ernst Mikael Jorgensen and Roger Semon. This is part of RCA's Essential Elvis series. Fans who complain that Elvis' recordings from the '70s are too lavishly produced would do well to check out A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW, a collection of undubbed masters and alternate takes from the King's five-day June 1970 recording session. Those sessions produced material for the albums LOVE LETTERS FROM ELVIS and ELVIS COUNTRY, records that contain great performances but that, to many, suffer from excessive overdubbing. A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW allows listeners to hear these tracks as Elvis heard them during those all-night June sessions, before strings, background vocals, and extra instruments were added. What he heard sounds pretty darn good, more organic than the final product RCA released at the time. Elvis sounds loose and enthusiastic, laughing at flubbed lyrics, goading the band on and singing with a mastery that would abandon him just a few short years later. The album also makes clear what all the fuss about Elvis' backing bands is about: soloists James Burton (electric guitar) and Charlie McCoy (harmonica) sparkle, and supporting musicians Jerry Carrigan (drums), Norbert Putnam (bass), and David Briggs (piano) provide rock-solid support. Not all the ESSENTIAL ELVIS albums live up to their name, but this one does, in spades. SKU: 1001507

Waking Up The Neighbours
Personnel: Bryan Adams (vocals, guitar); Keith Scott (guitar); Tommy Mandel (Hammond organ); Dave Taylor (bass); Mickey Curry (drums). Released 10 years after Adams's debut record, WAKING UP THE NEIGHBORS continues in the hard-rocking tradition of its predecessors, but there are some notable changes. Here, Robert "Mutt" Lange, producer of AC/DC and guiding hand behind a number of other successful hard rock acts, is now Adam's fulltime songwriting partner instead of Jim Vallance, who had co-written all of Adams's early hits. Many of the latter had a touch of heartland melancholy, but these songs are more concerned with the human heart. The love song "Everything I Do (I Do it for You)," featured in the movie ROBIN HOOD, was an enormous hit. Lange's heavy-metal influence is evident here, with Adams serving up a fine approximation of an AC/DC song on "Hey Honey--I'm Packing You In," while "Thought I'd Died and Gone to Heaven" carries with it the unmistakable flavor of Def Leppard. But in general the emphasis, as always, is on hook-heavy rockerswith catchy choruses like "Can't Stop This Thing We Started." Whereas on earlier records Adams had spiced up his songs with traces of social consciousness, this set is back squarely in love-and-lust territory. SKU: 1003906
