Eligible Bachelors
The Monochrome Set's third record initiated their long and rewarding relationship with Cherry Red Records, after an artistically fruitful but commercially unsatisfying tenure at the Virgin subsidiary Dindisc. Cherry Red wasa perfect fit for the band's blend of quirky pop melodies and sardonic, often satirical lyrics, and everything about this album, from the stylish yet odd packaging to the stellar contents, is immensely satisfying. This is probably the best of the Monochrome Set's many studio albums. Highlighted with two excellent singles, the dryly witty political portrait "The Jet Set Junta," and the deceptively serious "Cast a Long Shadow," ELIGIBLE BACHELORS also includes some of singer/guitarist Bid's most savage songs, such as the cheerfully rude "The Mating Game," the biting "The Ruling Class," and the self-deprecating "Cloud 10." One of the most essential of this band's many albums. SKU: 1034941

Ryde Or Die Vol.3
Ruff Ryders include: Eve, Infa-Red, Drag-On, Aja, Holiday Styles, Parle, Fiend, DMX, The Lox, Jadakiss. Additional personnel includes: Petey Pablo, Bubba Sparxxx, Yung Wun, Ludacris, Tha Eastsidaz. Producers include: Swizz Beats, Timbaland, Trackmasters, Scott Storch, Irv Gotti. Engineers include: Larry Phillabaum, Ralph Cacciurri, Dragan "Chach" Cacinovic. The Dirty South collective known as the Ruff Ryders brings its third collection of bangin' and ballin' rhymes, from the lightning quick raps of Drag-On and Petey Pablo's "Dirty" through Jadakiss and Bubba Sparxxxs' "They Ain't Ready." While others reach for respectability, the Ryders remain devoted to their prime directive of keeping it real, which they do here with the aid of sophisticatedand imaginative arrangements, all bubbling synths and smooth backing vocals, which spread a smooth sheen over these slices of thug life. The one-dimensional subject matter notwithstanding (thugging, thug-related activities, superlative skills of the Ryders over all rivals and haters in same), the Ryders' mix of ingenious bragging raps, grinding Dirty South rhythms, and exceptional production values all serve to make RYDE OR DIE VOL.III yet another milestone in the North Carolina outfit's tumultuous, street battle-scarred career. Sublime
Sublime: Bradley Nowell (vocals, guitar, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer); Eric Wilson (acoustic & electric basses, synthesizer); Bud (drums). Additional personnel: Miguel (acoustic guitar, sound effects); Paul Leary (slide & electric guitars); Todd Foreman (saxophone); Jon Blondell (trombone); David Kahne (piano, organ); Field Marshall (percussion, programming, DJ); Dave Aron (programming). Producers: Paul Leary, David Kahne, Brad Nowell, Miguel. Recorded at Pedernales Studios, Briarcliff, Texas and Total Access Studios, Redondo Beach, California. The popularity of ska bands like No Doubt and Goldfinger paved the way for what seemedto be inevitable success for Sublime. But lead singer Brad Nowell died of a heroin overdose in May 1996, two months before this major-label debut was released. SUBLIME reveals a talented act whose songs were a brilliant mix of punk, reggae, hip-hop and dub. Sublime's ability to jump genres is showcased within a few bars of "What I Got." Amidst whistling, scratching and a rhythm copped from the Beatles' "Lady Madonna," Nowell's vocals glide from spoken-word to a toasting vibe. Pop culture also provided a handy source, particularly in "Caress Me Down," where porn star Ron Jeremy and G.I. Joe are mentioned amid reggae rhythms and Spanish lyrics. Although many of these songs have a fun, carefree aura, Sublime's darker side occasionally surfaces. The black humor of "April 29, 1992 (Miami)," which boasts of looting during the L.A. riots, gives way to the eerie foreshadowing of "Garden Grove," where in the middle of quirky samples and heavy reverb, Nowell casually sings of shooting up. Best Of Jean-Luc Ponty, The
Personnel includes: Jean-Luc Ponty (violin, electric violin, keyboards, Synclavier, electronic percussion); Grover Washington, Jr. (soprano saxophone); Kemo Kouyate (harp, kora, balafon); Wally Minko (piano, keyboards); Clara Ponty (piano); Patrice Rushen (synthesizer); Yves N Djock, Pat Thomi, Jamie Glaser, Martin Atangana (guitar); Baron Browne, Guy N'Sangue (bass); Brice Wouassi, Rayford Griffin (drums, percussion); Abdou MBoup, Moustapha Cisse (percussion). Producers: Jean-Luc Ponty, Brian Malouf. Compilation producers: Didier C. Deutsch, Darcy M. Proper. Engineers: David Hentschel, Brian Malouf, Peter Kelsey. Recorded between May 11, 1987 and March 3, 1991. Includes liner notes by Thierry Peremarti. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Violinist Jean-Luc Ponty has had a wide-ranging career. Early on he was considered the next Stephane Grappelli. Uncomfortable with this, he changed paths altogether, abandoned straight-ahead jazz, and became one of the leading exponents of the Eurooean jazz-rock movement. Compiled from sessions recorded in the '80s and'90s, this compilation treats listeners to a variety of original works based around dance grooves, African and Caribbean simulations, and other period electronic beats. Ponty's playing is virtuosic throughout, especially on "Bottle Bop" and the motor-like "After the Storm." On both tracks, he plays fast and furious solos, touching on some of his bebop roots along the way. Switching gears, Ponty returns to his earliest years with an arrangement for piano and violin of Frederic Chopin's haunting "Prelude No. 20, Op. 28." SKU: 1071274

Grant's First Stand [Remastered]
Personnel: Grant Green (guitar); "Baby Face" Willette (organ); Ben Dixon (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on January 28, 1961. Originally released on Blue Note (84064). Includes liner notes by Robert Levin. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster. Guitarist Grant Green's immense recorded output for Blue Note would not be complete without this excellent date from 1961, which marks his first recorded appearance for the label. This is a burning triosession with legendary organist "Baby Face" Willette and underrated drummer Ben Dixon providing fiery counterpoint to Green's already soulful lines. From the blistering opener, "Miss Ann's Tempo," Green digs in and delivers some choice statements while Willette whoops up a sonic storm of his own. The session's two standards, "Lullaby of the Leaves" and "Tain't Nobody's Business if I Do," are stunning swingers that reach deep into the blues tradition that Green made such a part of his signature style. His own compositions, "Blues for Willarene," "Baby's Minor Lope," and the closing "A Wee Bit O' Green," reveal the guitarist's penchant for swinging grooves and tasty melodies from the start. In all, this is a remarkable debut that foreshadows Green's legendary career as one of the most influential guitarists in jazz. SKU: 1075426

Tubular Bells Vol.1 [Remastered] [SACD]
Personnel includes: Mike Oldfield (various instruments); Vivian Stanshall (vocals); Sally Oldfield, The Pilt-Down Man. The 19-year old Oldfield played virtually everything on the mostly instrumental TUBULAR BELLS, which required hundreds of over-dubs in the recording process (2300 in total, according to Rolling Stone magazine). The effect he created, a densely layered, richly textured sound, put "minimalist" musical ideas in a pop music context, andwas highly successful. TUBULAR BELLS was the first album to be released on the Virgin label. Excerpts from TUBULAR BELLS were used in the film "The Exorcist." A single version, sometimes called "Theme From The Exorcist" became a top-10 hit, and the album hit number-1 on the British album charts. SKU: 1055022

Nicola [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Bert Jansch, Danny Thompson. Recorded in 1967 and 1968. Includes liner notes by Colin Harper. Originally released as a 2 LP set. This CD combines 1967's NICOLA and 1968's BIRTHDAY BLUES, guitarist Bert Jansch's fourth and fifth solo albums, while oddly mixing the contents of the two LPsinto an entirely new running order with a pronounced split-personality. NICOLA, recorded with a full orchestra (arranged by future Jethro Tull member David Palmer) and featuring Jansch on electric guitar, is a startling departure for the traditionally minded musician. Anne Briggs' "Go Your Way My Love" is the clear highlight here. The stripped down BIRTHDAY BLUES finds Jansch in a more sympathetic setting, accompanied by fellow Pentangle members Danny Thompson (bass) and Terry Cox (drums). The remarkably titled "Come Sing Me A Happy Song To Prove We Can All Get Along The Lumpy, Bumpy, Long And Dusty Road" and the sweetly adoring "Miss Heather Rosemary Sewell," a touching love song to Jansch's new wife, are among Jansch's best songs. Very Best Of Stan Getz, The
Personnel includes: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Eddie Sauter (arranger); Astrud Gilberto (vocals); Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); J.J. Johnson (trombone); Kenny Barron, Chick Corea, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Oscar Peterson (piano); Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, Joao Gilberto (guitar); Ray Brown, Ron Carter (bass); Shelly Manne, Max Roach, Grady Tate (drums). Includes liner notes by James Isaacs. Stan Getz was known for his silky tenor sax tone and his lyrical improvisational style. Building on the approach of Lester Young, Getz became one of themost significant innovators of his generation. THE VERY BEST OF STAN GETZ highlights classic renditions of standards "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon), "Desifinado," the ever-charming "Girl from Ipanema" and more. This compilation spans Getz's career from 1952 until 1991 when he recorded what would unfortunately be his final album, PEOPLE TIME. Magnificent performances are heard on all 12 tracks by the legendary tenor man. Getz's version of "My Funny Valentine" is unusually cheerful, avoiding the somber, late-night treatment this tune normally receives. On this track, Getz's solo is bluesy, animated and even, at times, quite witty. In contrast, his ballad playing on Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" and Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes" is quite reflective and murky. Pianists Kenny Barron and Oscar Peterson add great allure to two of the tracks: the latter tearing down the house with his blistering solo on "It Don't Mean a Thing (if it Ain't Got that Swing). Blue Jukebox, The
'The Blue Jukebox' is Rea's 19th studio album and follows on from 2003's 'BlueStreet'. His illness that preceded this release contributed to a more back to basics approach from Rea both in terms of production and musical style. Husky vocals and slide guitar take the forefront of this album and 12 bar blues are as prominent as ever. SKU: 6553425

Live
Personnel: Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle); Ron Block (vocals, guitar, banjo, dobro); Dan Tyminski (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Barry Bates (vocals, acoustic bass); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Larry (drums, percussion). Recorded live at The Louisville Palace, Louisville, Kentucky on April 29-30, 2002. A key contributor to the popular upswing of bluegrass, Alison Krauss & Union Station found theirstewardship enlarged even more with the explosive success of the O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? soundtrack. Now furthering the cause is LIVE, a 2-CD set that allows this gaggle of talented musicians to stretch and impress over the course of 25 songs. Recorded over 2 nights at the Louisville Palace in Kentucky, this set list is an interesting mix of old favorites, traditional fare and some fun covers. Blessed with a shimmering voice that oftentimes is reminiscent of Dolly Parton's, Krauss' crystalline phrasing makes for goosebump inducing versions of songs like the delicate "Ghost In This House" and more rugged "Take Me For Longing." Union Station members also get plenty of licks in performances ranging from Dan Tyminski's rich singing on the traditional "Man of Constant Sorrow" taken from the aforementioned film to Jerry Douglas' laid-back dobro instrumental medley "A Tribute To Peador O'Donnell/Monkey Let The Hogs Out." Of course, nothing says crossover more than a cover of the Bad Company nugget "Oh, Atlanta" which has become a Krauss staple over time. SKU: 1076953

In Step [Remastered]
This 1999 reissue contains five bonus tracks not on the original release. Personnel: Stevie Ray Vaughan (vocals, guitar); Reese Wynans (keyboards); Tommy Shannon (bass); Chris Layton (drums, percussion). Texacali Horns: Joe Sublett, Darrell Leonard. Producers: Jim Gaines, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Double Trouble. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded at Kiva Studios, Memphis, Tennessee; Sound Castle and Summa Studios, Los Angeles, California. Live tracks recorded in Denver, Colorado on November 29, 1989. Originally released on Epic (45024). Includes liner notes by Bill Milkowski. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). The irony of 1989's IN STEP lay in the fact that after rebounding from a terrible drug problem, Stevie Ray Vaughan had his new lease on life cut short by a helicopter crash the following year. The recorditself features some of Vaughan's most inspired playing and Double Trouble has rarely sounded better. Songs such as "Crossfire," "Wall Of Denial" and "Tightrope" alluded to Vaughan's personal problems with just the right amount of optimism and scathing guitar thrown in for good measure. Blues influences abound whether it's a rollicking cover of Willie Dixon's "Let Me Love You Baby," a smoldering reading of Buddy Guy's "Leave My Girl Alone" or an upbeat take on Howlin' Wolf's "Love Me Darlin'." For all his skill as an interpreter of other people's songs, Stevie Ray Vaughan's originals are just as solid. Of particular note here are the instrumentals "Travis Walk" and "Riviera Paradise." Paced by Chris Layton's militaristic time-keeping, the former finds Vaughan trading solos with Reese Wynan's pounding piano. The latter is a number that dates back to 1980 and shimmers with the same kind of gentle aura found in some of Carlos Santana's more introspective playing. SKU: 1001062

Help (Film Soundtrack)
The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, guitar, electric piano); Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: George Martin (piano). HELP was the last Beatles album to feature a cover version (Larry Williams's "Dizzy Miss Lizzie"), and is considered a turning point in the quality of their songwriting. Like the previous album's "Im a Loser," "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" was Lennon's nod to the influence of Bob Dylan. McCartney's gift for melody was obvious in "I've Just SeenA Face." And Harrison's songwriting contributions grew to two tracks. Instrumentally, "Ticket To Ride"'s off-beat rhythm was Ringo's masterpiece, while the string quartet in the huge hit "Yesterday" was unusual for a rock band at that time; it was the start of a stellar series of McCartney ballads with strings ("Eleanor Rigby," "She's Leaving Home").
