Though it's worth noting that Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd, Booker Little, Woody Shaw and Freddie Hubbard were prodigious, original trumpet stylists while still in their teens and early 20s, arguably no young trumpet player ever burst on the jazz scene with the brash authorityand joy of Lee Morgan. Debuting in the challenging Dizzy Gillespie big band as an eighteen year-old, Morgan often found himself featured on the master's own "Night In Tunisia." And for many long-time jazz fans, Morgan's presence in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers of the late '50s-early '60s (with Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merrit) marked the spiritual and aesthetic peak of that great band.
LEEWAY presents Morgan in an all-star ensemble featuring the tart, swinging altoist Jackie McLean--a charter member of Blakey's earlier edition of the Jazz Messengers--and everyone's favorite bassist, Paul Chambers. Together with Jazz Messengers Blakey and Timmons, Chambers helps to rhythmically supercharge the soulful shuffles and blues which distinguish this upbeat blowing session. "These Are Soulful Days" is a funky hard bop anthem by Cal Massey, with a supple shift to 3/4 in the bridge. Morgan follows laid-back solos by Chambers, Timmons and McLean with an electrifying concoction of the rhythmic double time, vocal slurs and cascading melodic devices--each and every note sweetly articulated.
On "The Lion And The Wolff," Morgan answers McLean's bluesy recreated figures with riffing phrases of his own, building enormous tension by alternating stunning half-valve effects, taut vamping patterns and swinging syncopations, until drummer Blakey is like to bust. The rhythmic stops and starts of "Midtown Blues" inspire Morgan to a fiercely riffing solo full of long rolling passages and cunning repeated riffs, culminating in a magnificent display of brassy, blustery lyricism--followed by an equally swinging McLean--as Blakey and Timmons allow the hot grease to spill all over this rocking shuffle-beat. And the extended form "Nakatini Suite," with its exotic Afro-Cuban intro, swinging release and elliptical bridge, illuminates Morgan's mastery of complex harmonic materials, as he surfs effortlessly through the changes, punctuating his melodic elisions with soulful cries.

Not to take away from the two fine party albums that preceded it, but TRUE BLUE is arguably the first great Madonna album, the one on which she discovered that great soul music isn't just a beat; it usually requires delving into one's own soul. As originally released on LP, the album's first side, featuring a dizzying single about teen pregnancy ("Papa Don't Preach"), a perfect Tin Pan Alley pop song ("Open Your Heart") and the amazing "Live To Tell," a ballad on which she discovers, for the first time, the low end of her vocal range, is almost undoubtedly the finest album side she ever cut.
TRUE BLUE also includes "Where's The Party," acatchy throwback to the forget-your-cares dance pop of her debut album, and "La Isla Bonita," which represented the beginning of Madonna's fruitful obsession with Latin beats and culture. Five songs from the album, including the girl-groupy title cut, made the top five of the pop chart; three of them hit #1.

This soundtrack to the legendary musical episode of one of the most consistently entertaining shows on network TV is packed with Broadway-style songs sung by the cast with varying degrees of expertise. Put simply, it's a hoot. The premise is that a spell's been cast on them and they have to sing everything that comes out of their mouths, consequential or not, and whether they can sing or not. This leads to such songs as "They got the mustard out" (that's the entire lyric right there) and the priceless "Parking Ticket" song featuring the immortal lines "I think that hydrant wasn't there...I'm just a mortal don't you care/hey I'mnot wearing underwear."
The opener, "Going Through the Motions," features an ennui-laden Sarah Michelle Gellar lamenting her lack of interest in her vampire-snuffing activities, all the while fighting off a chorus of demons, ghouls, and various other manifestations of evil with all the enthusiasm of a teen forced to do the dishes. Some degree of Buffy orientation is required, and don't let the schmaltzy Disney-style orchestrations fool you--this teen musical's about as subversive as it gets.

The question for a 42-year-old Michael Jackson heading towards the end of 2001 was whether or not the self-proclaimed King Of Pop could make his presence known on the charts after having spent much of the '90s laying low. If the chart-topping position achieved by INVINCIBLE is any indication, then the answer is a resounding yes. The album is primarily produced by Jersey wunderkind Rodney Jerkins, and Jacko wasted no time tapping other top-flight artists and knob-twirlers to help out, including Teddy Riley, Babyface and R.Kelly.
Michael pulls out all the stops here, whether peppering the opener "Unbreakable" with his trademark falsetto and a posthumous rap from the Notorious B.I.G, or recruiting guitar great Carlos Santana to contribute some tasty playing to the Latin slow-burn of "Whatever Happens." Elsewhere, comedian Chris Tucker contributes some high speed patter to the groove-heavy, piano-driven hit single "You Rock My World," while gospel superstar Andrae Crouch and his choir provide harmonic firepower to the magically lush "Speech". Although MJ stops long enough to take a swipe at yellow journalists everywhere with "Privacy," he truly shines on "The Lost Children," a sweeping ode to his young fans everywhere.
