Since the '90s, the Deftones have clawed out their own specialized niche in music. Many have imitated them, but few have reached their heights. They were innovators of so-called nu metal and could easily have settled into complacency riding the wave they helped create. Instead they continue to make waves with their self-titled fourth album.
Deftones frontman Chino Moreno wastes no time in expressing his despair mere seconds into "Hexagram" with a blood-curdling scream that will make your skin crawl. The dense, down-tuned guitars of Stephen Carpenter form a solid backdrop for the vocals that's more about creating a mood than a melody ("When Girls Telephone Boys"). Ironically one of the album's most intense moments ("Lucky You") doesn't even involve guitar, it relies onNine Inch Nails-type rhythm and keyboards to create an uncomfortable tension. DEFTONES winds down with the loud-soft-loud pattern they're famous for on "Moana."

Formed in Toronto by siblings Micheal, Peter, and Margo Timmins, The Cowboy Junkies purvey a surreal brand of moody, slow motion country music. THE TRINITY SESSIONS was recorded with a single microphone in Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity (hence the title), an engineering circumstance that has everything to do with the record's stark, spacious atmosphere. Bass and lightly brushed drums provide a soft, pulsating background, while gentle guitar embellishments weave around singer Margo's haunting vocal performances.
While it is the record's many covers-including treatments of the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane," Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and Patsy Cline's "WalkingAfter Midnight"-that first catch a listener's attention, the originals also sparkle. "Misguided Angel," in particular, received a good deal of airplay. The combination of gentle, smoky atmospherics and the somewhat unsettling distention of conventional country song structures make THE TRINITY SESSIONS an intriguing and worthwhile listen.

On his previous couple of albums, Jackson had tried on various styles, inhabiting one or two for the length of a record, or at least for a few songs. On BIG WORLD, he brings all his influences together for a constantly shifting amalgam of textures and styles. After the relative excess of BODY AND SOUL, the band on BIG WORLD was scaled down to bass-guitar-drums and Joe, just like the old days. To underline the excitement generated by small-band interaction the album was recorded live to two-track.
BIG WORLD was initially released as a three-sided double LP, and the tracks touch on everything from Ennio Morricone spaghetti Western motifs ("Wild West")and tango ("Tango Atlantico") to Steely Dan-ish jazzy pop ("Soul Kiss") and dewy piano balladry ("Shanghai Sky"). Ultimately though, the emphasis is on the energetic, hooky pop/rock that is Jackson's strong suit. BIG WORLD also marks a return to the biting sarcasm and social commentary of his early albums, making it an appealing return to (lyrical) form.

As is the bar (or bat) mitzvah in the Jewish faith, so is the shedding of the Lil' in hip-hop culture, and so it is Lil' Bow Wow's time to ascend to manhood. The boy born Shad Moss in 1987 had a relatively good run of it in childhood, flowing flawlessly on stage with Snoop Dogg at age 6 (hence the name), and garnering two platinum records, numerous top 40 hits, and number one rap singles like "Bounce With Me." However, at 16, he now simply goes by Bow Wow and with the aptly named UNLEASHED, his third offering, he has quite the coming-out party.
Bow Wow knows how to get a party started right with the grungy holla'in banger "Get It Poppin'" and the charged swingin' single "Let's Get Down." "Eighteen" courageously opens with a skit where the teenaged rapper gets id'ed and bounced at a club before he launches into an longingly aching anthem (even bemoaning to a potential girl how he can't get her into the clubs). Crooners Jagged Edge drop by as Bow Wow displays a most genuine sensitive side, like a slightly more vulnerable LL Cool J, on "My Baby." Overall, UNLEASHED stands a compelling chronicle of a prodigy MC coming of age.

The mid-'60s were a troubled, dissatisfied musical period for Sonny Rollins. ON IMPULSE, recorded in 1965, reflects an occasional vagueness and a tendency to disappear into long, ambiguous improvisations. Despite this, the album includes some brilliant moments that display the kind of discipline and focus the tenor saxophonist is capable of. At his best, Rollins creates a sense of cohesion through his unmistakably distinct phrasing and his subtle way of bringing colors and textures to his music.
In Rollins' hands, the jazz standard "Everything Happens to Me"becomes multi-dimensional, with a variety of shades and nuances not usually found in the song. Another standout is the vigorous calypso tune "Hold "Em, Joe," but Rollins' mastery is illustrated nowhere better than the zippy, high-speed "Three Little Words." Here he never loses his wit, accuracy, or the vividness of his articulation, despite the song's daunting speed and intricacy.

On THE FIX, Scarface works overtime to show that a rapper can retain his gangsta credibility and still explore other avenues of expression. He lays down hard-hitting thug-life scenarios on such tracks as "Safe" and "Keep Me Down," but THE FIX is far from monochromatic. The bevy of producers add something special to each track, from the aforementioned "Keep Me Down"'s clever utilization of an acoustic guitar riff sampled from '60s folkie Tom Rush, to golden-touch crew the Neptunes adding some pop/R&B flavoring (not to mention the sensual vocals of Faith Evans) to the catchy "Someday." Thematically, "Guess Who's Back" finds Scarface singing the praises of old-school camaraderie with Beanie Siegel and Jay-Z, while the complex sociological analysis of "What Can I Do?" favorably recalls the Furious Five's classic "The Message."

"Texas" is a prime example of their new maturity, combining reggae, funk, and metal in a whole that recalls both mid-period Led Zeppelin and Bad Brains. Elsewhere they use a familiar bait-and-switch approach on "Lessons," which has an almost pastoral verse that's steamrollered by its chorus, while "Lou Evil" is a killer one-two combination of Living Color-esque metal and funk that even features a smatteringof saxophone. Even the usual Cookie Monster vocals are sometimes leavened with less throat-shredding stylings, and though Primer 55 never fully abandon their metal roots here, they twist them to their own ends in compelling fashion.

On Fenix TX's second outing, the quartet continues to pursue the brash pop-punk sound that initially brought them widespread recognition. You've got to love a group that opens its albumwith a completely unironic song called "Pheobe Cates," an ode to the actress best known for her role in FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. Like Green Day and many of the bands who sprang up in that groundbreaking trio's wake, Fenix TX mixes pop-schooled harmonies and melodies with a surefire guitar-and-drums attack whose lineage may be drawn from the Ramones through the Buzzcocks to the aforementioned Greenies without any degeneration of effect. Sure, they're very much of they're era; If LECHUZA came out in 1965, Fenix TX would probably be proponents of the British Invasion sound, and they'd be no less infectious and energetic than they are on this album.

The title of Jackson Browne's 13th album refers to a state of emotional vulnerability. Still walking the tightrope between the personal and the political, (although Browne would probably argue they share fairly close quarters), this gifted singer-songwriter leans more towards the former on this particular outing. When Browne isn't quietly mooning over his companion (the '70s-ish "My Stunning Mystery Companion") or alluding to Judgement Day with the help of Marc Cohn (an atmospheric "Don't You Want To Be There"), he's casting a critical eye on past choices (the wistful "About My Imagination").
Although most of these songs are given a light touch, the one exception is "The Night Inside Me," a chugging rocker punctuated by former Cretone Mark Goldenberg's twangy riffs. Tapping into his activist core, Browne delivers "Casino Nation," a broad swipe at how tabloid-driven mentalities are soiling different facets or our societal fabric. Coupled with "Sergio Leone," a tribute to the father of the spaghetti western that incorporates part of Giuseppe Verdi's "La Forza Del Destino," THE NAKED RIDE HOME finds Jackson Browne returning to the fine form of albums like LATE FOR THESKY and THE PRETENDER.

Tapped to provide music for Peter Jackson's cinematic journey into the world of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, veteran composer Howard Shore uses a deft hand in bringing life to this tale of Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits and men. Working with a story based on the age-old battle between good and evil centering on a quest to destroy a mystical and malevolent gold ring, Shore's compositions and direction of The London Philharmonic Orchestra are steeped in an extensive use of dark and light shadings. Cuts like "The Shadow Of The Past" and The Treason Of Isengard" are pumped full of militaristic brass, heavy orchestration and a netherworld-flavored chorus straight from The Exorcist. On the flipside are the quaint "Concerning Hobbits" with its Uillean pipes and darting strings as well as "Many Meetings" which finds heavier orchestral arrangements banished in favor of more lighter, more uplifting string and woodwind sections.
Celtic enchantress Enya lends a medieval flavor to the proceedings with a pair of originals. The majestic strains of "The Council Of Elrond Featuring 'Aniron (Theme For Aragorn And Arwen)" finds her contributing the slightest bit of ethereal harmonizing while "May It Be" is a more fully realized lyric-packed song steeped in unbowed optimism.
