Live From Mars
Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals: Ben Harper (vocals, guitar); Juan Nelson (bass, background vocals); Dean Butterworth(drums, background vocals); Nick Rich, Rahzel (background vocals). Throughout the '90s, Ben Harper's blend of blues, funk, soul, and folk quietly earned him a hardcore following of diehard fans over the span of four studio albums. For the two-CD LIVE FROM MARS, Harper and his tight three-piece band the Innocent Criminals cull performances from a variety of concerts, featuring interesting arrangements and odd nuances applied to his best-known songs, along with an eclectic array of covers. Armed with his hollow-neck '20s-era Weissenborn lap slide guitar, Harper rages throughout the plugged-in Disc One with highlights including the human-beat box-driven radio hit "Steal My Kisses," and the churning opening number "Glory & Consequence." "Burn One Down," a sprightly ode to herb, evokes Bob Marley's "Redemption Song," while a simmering "Sexual Healing" channels the spirit of Marvin Gaye. Unplugged and introspective, Disc Two overflows with Biblical metaphors captured in delicate numbers like "Waiting on An Angel," "Power of the Gospel," and "In the Lord's Arms." Tying it all together is a heartfelt reading of the Verve's "The Drugs Don't Work," and the epic 10-minute closer "Like a King/I'll Rise," featuring lyrics borrowed from a Maya Angelou poem. Skull Orchard
Personnel: Jon Langford (vocals, guitar); Jane Baxter-Miller, Edith Frost, John Hyatt, Lu Edmonds, Dean Schlabowske (vocals); Carlton B. Morgan (spoken vocals, harmonica); Mark Price, Zak Price (spoken vocals); Tracey Dear (mandolin);Tom Ray (ukulele); John Rice (fiddle); Rico Bell (accordion); Paul Mertens (alto flute, baritone saxophone, brass); Wally Ma (brass); Fred Armisen (percussion). The Skull Orchard: Alan Doughty (vocals, bass); Marc Durante (guitar, 12-string guitar); Steve Goulding (drums). Recorded at Kingsize Sound Laboratories, Chicago, Illinois in August 1997. John Langford's solo outing, 1998's SKULL ORCHARD, is a bold, brash, and accessible collection of country and roots songs from one of the co-founders of the Mekons. The Welsh-born Langford, who fronts the Mekons, Waco Brothers, Pine Valley Cosmonauts, and various other country- and roots-inflected rock & roll bands, recorded these 15 songs in Chicago with a pared-down version of the Waco Brothers line-up. SKULL ORCHARD features Langford's sly cover art, and is a rough mix of hard-hitting bar rockers ("Trapdoor" and "I Am the Law") and soaring, powerful ballads ("Penny Arcades"), with the slinky R&B groove of "Deep Sea Diver" thrown in for good measure. Always political, but never preachy, SKULL ORCHARD reveals Langford's dismay and bitterness over the economic decline of his native land and the collapse of socialism among the working class. SKULL ORCHARD is less twang-filled than Langford's work with the Waco Brothers and more conventional than much of the Mekons' oeuvre, though it's often compared favorably with that band's gem, RETREAT FROM MEMPHIS. SKULL ORCHARD is a must for any Mekon fan, and is also an excellent introduction for newcomers to Langford's prodigious and powerful musicianship. SKU: 1022829

Cold Dog Soup
Personnel includes: Guy Clark (vocals, acoustic guitar); Verlon Thompson (acoustic, nylon-string & National resonator guitars, banjo, nylon-string banjo, harmonica, background vocals); Darrell Scott (acoustic & nylon-string acoustic guitars, dobro, mandolin, mandocello, autoharp, accordion, bass, background vocals); Shawn Camp (acoustic guitar, fiddle, background vocals); Emmylou Harris (background vocals). Producers: Guy Clark, Verlon Thompson, Darrell Scott, Chris Latham. Recorded at EMI Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. When the roster of great Texas songwriters is called, the two names that usually tumble out first are Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. These two compatriots shared a gift for combining the simple and the poetic in an unassuming but endlessly memorable country/folk style. With Van Zandt's passing, Clark was left to shoulder the burden of Lone Star poet laureate alone (he's based out of Nashville these days, but you can't take Texas out of the boy). COLD DOG SOUP registers the presence of Van Zandt nevertheless; the opening song mentions him by name, and is followed by Steve Earle's Townes memorial "Ft. Worth Blues." Nevertheless, Clark has always been fully his own man, and his unique vision is fully intact throughout the album. The songs are presented in a pared-down acoustic format, with Clark mostly accompanied only by Darrell Scott (mandolin) and Verlon Thompson (guitar). This allows the uncluttered, deceptively simple imagery of Clark's songs room to breathe. His weathered, gritty voice sounds full of wisdom as it delivers sharply observed truisms about the ups and downs of life, all the while maintaining a bemused but ultimately optimistic attitude. When I Was Cruel [ECD]
Personnel includes: Elvis Costello (vocals, arranger, electric guitar, Spanish guitar, harmonica, melodica, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, harmonium, bass, cymbals, loops); Steve Nieve (melodica, piano, Clavinet, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards, vibraphone); Roy Nathanson (alto saxophone); Jay Rodriguez (tenor saxophone); Ku-umba Frank Lacy (trumpet, flugelhorn); Curtis Fowlkes (trombone); Bill Ware (vibraphone); Davey Faragher (bass); Pete Thomas (drums, shaker, tambourine, percussion); Leo Pearson (tabla, programming); Steven Kennedy (background vocals). Producers include: Elvis Costello, Ciarin Cahill, Leo Pearson, Kieran Lynch. Recorded at Windmill Lane, Dublin, Ireland; Avatar Studios, New York, New York. WHEN I WAS CRUEL was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album. "45" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Though he was involved in worthy collaborations (Burt Bacharach, Anne Sofie Von Otter in the interim, the notoriously prolific Elvis Costello didn't release a proper solo album between 1996's triumph ALL THIS USELESS BEAUTY and this 2002 effort, the longest gap of his career. WHEN I WAS CRUEL is a return to visceral, rock-oriented production and songwriting after the more complex, sophisticated pursuits of his aforementioned collaborative works, and one can feel Costello's joy at getting back to his roots for a while. The maturation of the previous decade isn't invisible here--this is not the sturm und drang of THIS YEAR'S MODEL (or even BLOOD & CHOCOLATE), but this as electric-guitar-based as latter-day EC gets, and the likes of "Tear Off Your Own Head" and "Daddy Can I Turn This" are as hard-hitting as anything he's done. Two-thirds of the Attractions (occupying the drum and keyboard stools) are on hand to provide that classic sound, but new arrival Davey Farragher impressively emulates disgruntled bassist Bruce Thomas's McCartney-on-speed licks. Tasteful horns add effective coloring to the quartet sound, and Costello's own tremolo-drenched guitar has never been so prevalent. Despite a couple of long, moody songs (the title track and the closing "Radio Silence"), the overwhelming feeling here is one of unbridled energy of the sort Costello hadn't let out for quite a while. "Every Elvis has his army," sings Mr. Costello on "Episode of Blonde," and it appears that his is well trained enough to mobilizeeffectively even after long periods of rest. SKU: 1071785

Amandla [Digipak] [Remastered]
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Kenny Garrett (soprano & alto saxophones); Marcus Miller (soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, keyboards, guitar, bass, drums); Rick Margitza (tenor saxophone); Joe Sample (piano); George Duke (keyboards, Synclavier); John Bigham (keyboards, guitar, programming); Joey DeFrancesco (keyboards); Jean-Paul Bourelly, Foley, Billy "Spaceman" Patterson, Michael Landau, Steve Khan (guitar); Omar Hakim, Al Foster, Ricky Wellman (drums); Don Alias, Mino Cinelo, Bashiri Johnson, Paulhino Da Costa (percussion); Jason Miles (programming). Producers: Marcus Miller, Tommy LiPuma, George Duke. Engineers: Eric Calvi, Bruce Miller, Eric Zobler. With the release of what turned out to be his final "band" album in 1989, Miles Davis had once again arrived at a new sound. And while the music on AMANDLA was certainly immersed in popular conventions, somehow the trumpeter managed to keep his sense of distinction alive and well. AMANDLA doesn't sound like any of the contemporary jazz records of its time. In recording TUTU and SIESTA, Miles basically abdicated his bandleader functions to the multi-talented Marcus Miller, who in addition to his command of modern bass guitar techniques, handled reeds, woodwinds, guitars, keyboards and all manner of computer programming. By plugging in with the cream of his live collaborators on AMANDLA, Miles retained the big band sound of TUTU, but with a more human face--an enhanced sense of interplay and swing. Tunes such as "Jo-Jo" and "Jill" engender an ongoing call response between front line and back line, between main and secondary themes, as Kenny Garrett's fat, burnished alto lines coil and strike around Miles' more circumspect muted phrases. The opening "Catembe" heralds the third world rhythmic locus which snakes its way through the entire album, from the big beat shuffle of "Big Time" through the Caribbean flavored backdrops and go-go beats of "Jo-Jo." The most affecting moments come on the title tune, which features chord changes reminiscent of Miles' traditional ballad style, and on the closing "Mr. Pastorius," where Miles finally reverts back to his openhorn to pay tribute to the late bassist over a laid back swing beat, with poignant echoes of "I Didn't Know What Time It Was." Get Up With It [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Miles Davis (trumpet, piano, organ); Steve Grossman, John Stubblefield, Carlos Garnett (soprano saxophone); Sonny Fortune (flute); Dave Liebman (alto flute); Keith Jarrett, Cedric Lawson (Fender Rhodes piano); Herbie Hancock (Clavinet); Pete Cosey, John McLaughlin, Reggie Lucas, Dominique Gaumont (guitar); Khalil Balakrishna (electric sitar); Michael Henderson (electric bass); Al Foster, Billy Cobham (drums); Badal Roy (tabla); Mtume, AirtoMoreira (percussion). Producers: Teo Macero, Billy Jackson. Reissue producer: Bob Belden. Recorded between 1970 and 1974. Includes liner notes by Dave Liebman. Digitally remastered by Seth Foster (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). By 1974, Miles Davis had become not only a music legend in general and a jazz legend in particular, but also a reclusive and confounding character. Davis' music had excited many and exasperated others, including many of his older fans, with its forays into space-age free-form meta-funk. Released in 1974 but unavailable on CD in the US until 2000, GET UP WITH IT is a compendium of several of Miles's early-to-mid-'70s studio adventures, and one of the most challenging albums in his catalog. His tribute to Duke Ellington, "He Loved Him Madly," is a darkly intense, 30-minute-plus exercise evoking the dense textures of such contemporary classical composers as Paul Schutze and Georgy Ligeti. "Red China Blues," a wry homage of sorts to Chicago blues, features some stinging trumpet by Davis and some earnest blues harmonica. The 2-CD GET UP WITH IT is a collection of feverish, dense textures and deep grooves, which range from sensual, to bereaved, to confrontational, and features the outstanding players with whom Davis surrounded himself during this period. Fans of electric Miles Davis will find this a must-have, displaying as it does Davis's anticipation of much of the music of the '90s and beyond. SKU: 1040069

Scary Monsters [Remastered] [SACD]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, keyboards); Tony Visconti (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Pete Townshend, Robert Fripp, Carlos Alomar, Chuck Hammer (guitar); Roy Bittan (piano); Andy Clark (synthesizer); George Murray (bass); Dennis Davis (percussion); Lynn Maitland, Chris Porter, Michi Hirota (background vocals). Recorded at The Power Station, New York, New York. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). Fresh off his Berlin trilogy (LOW, HEROES, LODGER), David Bowie released SCARY MONSTERS, an album that continued the cool, detached, electronic-flavored sound he'd been experimenting with on the aforementioned records. Robert Fripp's distinctively angular guitar style contributes greatly to the resulting Kraftwerk-flavored funk of "Fashion" and the jittery paranoia of the title track. Elsewhere, Bowie updates the saga of Major Tom with "Ashes to Ashes" and turns to Tom Verlaine for the new wave nihilism of "Kingdom Come" which also features Fripp on guitar. Robert Fripp was far from the only great guestinvited to play on SCARY MONSTERS. Pete Townshend's swirling guitar on "Because You're Young" made it an underrated classic in Bowie's canon. SCARY MONSTERS proved to be David Bowie's last musical effort for a while as he spent the next three years pursuing a career in acting before returning to the studio in 1983 to record LET'S DANCE. Outlandos D'Amour [SACD] [Digipak]
The Police: Andy Summers (vocals, guitar); Sting (vocals, bass); Stewart Copeland (drums). Recorded at Surrey Sound Studios, London, England. The Police brashly asserted themselves on the American pop scene with OUTLANDOS D'AMOUR, their first album. Their distinctive mix of rock and reggae with Sting's jazz-based vocals and slightly punk lyrics was unlike that of any other group. Before releasing any songs inAmerica, manager Miles Copeland (Stewart's brother) arranged an American tour complete with rented van and borrowed equipment. With America thus primed, The Police's first single "Roxanne" (already a British hit) went as far as #32 on the charts. SKU: 1079809

Pocket Full Of Kryptonite
Spin Doctors: Christopher Barron (vocals); Eric Schinkman (piano, guitar, background vocals); Aaron Comess (keyboards, drums, percussion, background vocals); Mark White (bass). Additional personnel: John Popper (harmonica, background vocals); John Bush (congas, tambourine). Producers include: Spin Doctors, Peter Denenberg, Frankie LaRocka. Recorded at the Power Station & RPM Studios, New York; Acme Recording Studios, Mamaroneck, New York in August & December 1990. The Steve MillerBand of the 90s has made a small impression with this irresistible package. Crammed full of great riffs and licks, tight playing and singing with enthusiasm. The title track together with the wry 'Little Miss Can't Be Wrong' were both hit singles in the wake of the excellent 'Two Princes', one of the few occasions where the cliche of rhyming 'baby' with 'maybe' was completely acceptable. Unpretentious rock music for the 90s and a memorable debut, that they could never come near again. SKU: 1006347

Debut Rarities Vol.2
DEBUT RARITIES VOL. 2 consists of 15 tracks previously released on THE COMPLETE DEBUT RECORDINGS 12-CD boxed set. Personnel: Charles Mingus (acoustic bass); Spaulding Givens (piano); Max Roach (drums). Recorded in Los Angeles, California in April 1951 and New York, New York on April 14, 1953. Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This is part of the Limited Edition Original Jazz Classics Series. A young Mingus and Spaulding Givens (Art Tatum's fourth cousin, and for the record about as close stylistically here as he was in the familial sense) gently feel their way through the first nine tracks of standards, creating a texture that is at once intimate and compelling. "Body and Soul" features piano accompaniment with lilting, bright chords as Mingus makes his bass sing. Givens generously magnifies the element of fantasy in his solo take of Jerome Kern's "Yesterdays," with a sweeping, rolling technique that makes true romance of some of the melody's most poignant notes. Givens' own "Blue Tide"carries on in a similar vein, the melody rendered dreamlike and entrancing by Mingus' pedal point bowing. The addition of Max Roach makes for glad, up-tempo trio swinging on both takes of the "Rhapsody In Blue" theme, Mr. Roach's cymbals aglow throughout. SKU: 1004465

Third
Personnel: Robert Wyatt (vocals, drums); Rab Spall (violin); Jimmy Hastings (flute, bass clarinet); Lyn Dobson (flute, soprano saxphone); Elton Dean (alto saxophone, saxello); Nick Evans (trombone); Mike Ratledge (piano, organ); Hugh Hopper (bass). When Kevin Ayers left the band, Soft Machine moved into deep jazz/rock - so deep that they rarely rocked. The mercurial Robert Wyatt became occasional vocalist, although they were now effectively an instrumental unit of great originality. Third is generally regarded as their peak recording, a wandering foray using Elton Dean's soprano saxophone and Mike Ratledge's keyboards as the foundation to their sound. 'Moon In June' features Wyatt's frail, high-pitched voice, and is still talked about by cultists for the fact that he rarely sang the same words from one performance to another. Difficult music, but well worth the effort, especially after a vat of wine. SKU: 5048371

Texas Flood [Remastered]
This 1999 reissue contains five bonus tracks not on the original release. Personnel: Stevie Ray Vaughan (vocals, guitar); Tommy Shannon (bass); Chris Layton (drums). Producers: Richard Mullen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Double Trouble. Principally recorded at Down Town Studio, Los Angeles, California and Riverside Sound, Austin, Texas. Live tracks recorded at The Palace, Hollywood, California on September 23, 1983. Originally released on Epic (38734). Includes liner notes by Michael Ventura. Quite possibly the only electric blues/rock guitarist to come near rivalling Jimi Hendrix, Vaughan, who, like Hendrix, died tragically, was so good he was ridiculous. He was lacking in really good material, and his own compositions were mainly guitar workouts, such as "Rude Mood," although he shows great feeling on the instrumental "Lenny." He is much more comfortable singing non-originals, and on this album he covers Buddy Guy's "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and Howlin Wolf's "Tell Me," but the listener is still waiting for the bit where the guitar solo comes in. Poor Double Trouble barely geta look in. SKU: 1000736

Have I Ever Told You
FFH includes: Michael Boggs (acoustic guitar); Jerry McPherson (electric guitar); Jeff Roach (keyboards); Mark Hill (bass); Scott Williamson (drums). Producers: Scott Williamson, David Hamilton. In case you were wondering, FFH stands for "far from home." That evocative phrase should not be taken in the standard teen-alienation/rock-cliche way, but rather in a more expansive, spiritual context, because this quartet is of the Christian pop bent. HAVE I EVER TOLD YOU nevertheless displays an impressive command over secular pop-rock idioms. The opening cut "Watching Over Me" is a good example, shifting back and forth between modern pop moves and Beatles-like touches. The tracks that follow find the group engaging in everything from lightly skipping breakbeats to anthemic, Collective Soul-style rock epics. Naturally, the connecting thread is the unabashedly spirituallyrics, dealing with Jesus, faith, and worship. SKU: 1072682

More Blank Than Frank (Desert Island Selection)
Personnel includes: Brian Eno (vocals, guitar, acoustic & electric pianos, organ, synthesizer, bass, bells, percussion, various instruments); Paul Rudolph (guitar, bass, snare drum); Robert Fripp, Phil Manzanera (guitar); Brian Turrington (piano, bass); Robert Wyatt (piano, percussion); Rod Melvin (piano); Andy MacKay (keyboards); Busta Cherry Jones (bass); Percy Jones (fretless bass); Rhett Davies (Stick, agong-gong); Dave Mattacks, Phil Collins(drums); Simon King (percussion); The Simplistics (background vocals). This compilation was released on vinyl and tape as MORE BLANK THAN FRANK in 1986 and belatedly issued on CD in 1989 with a less enigmatic title more in keeping with Eno's stated intention: "Instead of trying to compile a representative sample, an historical archive, or a best-of, I just put together a record I'd like to listen to." DESERT ISLAND SELECTION favors Eno's later pop work. Seven songs--including the swirling "St. Elmo's Fire" and the kinetic, African-influenced "King's Lead Hat"--come from ANOTHER GREEN WORLD and BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE, with only two from the concept album TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN (BY STRATEGY) and one, the incandescent "On Some Faraway Beach," from his solo debut HERE COME THE WARM JETS. While all four of Eno's '70s art-pop albums are essential listening, DESERT ISLAND SELECTION is a thoughtful condensation that's both an excellent introduction to Eno's pop work and a wonderfully listenable album itself. Symphony No.1 (Tonal Plexus)
Cassette available on Roir (125). NOTES: Full title: Symphony No. 1 (Tonal Plexus): Music In Four Movements For Multiple Guitars, Keyboards, Brass, And Percussion. Personnel: Glenn Branca, Lee Renaldo (soprano & steel-wire guitars); Ned Sublette (soprano, tenor & steel-wire guitars); Robert Harrison (soprano, tenor & bowed guitars); Craig Bromberg (tenor, soprano, bowed & octave guitars); Thurston Moore (tenor, soprano & bowed guitars); Fritz Van Orden (tenor saxophone); Dave Buk (trumpet, baritone horn); Richard Edson (trumpet); Margot Zvaleko (French horn); Warton Tiers (keyboards, soprano & steel-wire guitars, percussion); Ann DeMarinis (keyboards, percussion); Gail Vachon(keyboards); Stephan Wischerth (drums, percussion). Recorded live at The Performing Garage, New York, New York on July 18 & 19, 1981. Includes liner notes by Jon Pareles. Digitally remastered by Glenn Branca and Wharton Tiers. Finally available on CD after its initial cassette-only 1983 release, SYMPHONY #1 provides a fascinating glimpse of the early work of this maverick rock composer. Branca has become well-known for these symphonies of massed, peak volume guitars and for giving alternative rock figures like Page Hamilton of Helmet and Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth some of their earliest exposure as members of his ensemble. There are a few surprises in listening to this seminal work. Horns, which do not appear at all in Branca's later symphonies, are used extensively. The metal percussion and straight rock drumming tend to date it to the early '80s, as do the rather heavy-handed gamelan-influenced rhythms of the second movement. Still, the fast strummed guitars and white-noise overdrive Branca is famous for are firmly in place in the third and fourth movements. This isn't the best place to start with Branca (hear Symphonies 2, 3 and 6 first), but for the already initiated it's a necessary addition. SKU: 1012835

Innocent Eyes
Following in the footsteps of Kylie Minogue and Natalie Imbruglia, "Neighbours" star Delta Goodrem presents her debut album. In a reality-blurringcrossover between the worlds of pop and TV, her character Nina Tucker sings in the show the song 'Born To Try', which Goodrem wrote and which is the first single off the album. Mostly co-written by the singer herself, the record takes a fairly organic approach to pop, with acoustic guitars and piano - played by Goodrem - high in the mix. SKU: 1081681
