Moonlight Sinatra
Includes liner notes by Stan Cornyn. It's been a timeless symbol in all the arts for centuries: the moon. Poets, authors and songwriters have expended untold amounts of energy trying to convey the mystical aura and metaphysical connections evoked by that pale, barren globe that orbits our planet. It's only fitting, then, that the finest popular vocalist of the twentieth century should step up to the plate, with an album full of songsthat explore lunar images as seen through the eyes of popular song's greatest composers. Reaching back to his big band days, Sinatra comes up with a distinctive reading of Glenn Miller's luxuriant, swaying "Moonlight Serenade." He sets his swoon gun on "stun" for the Van Heusen/Burke evergreen "Moonlight Becomes You." Irving Berlin's astrological issues are addressed with aplomb as Sinatra tackles "Reaching For The Moon." Ultimately, MOONLIGHT SINATRA fits in nicely with the singer's other concept albums, and it provides us with a fresh perspective on the tunes chosen for inclusion. SKU: 1009606

Music, The
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include the "Take The Long Road" video, the band's Electronic Press Kit and live footage. The Music: Robert Harvey (vocals, guitar); Adam Nutter (guitar); Stuart Coleman (bass); Phil Jordan (drums). Recorded at Jacob's Studio's, Surrey, England. The Music may be simply hung with the one-size-fits-all Britpop tag, but in reality, this Leeds quartet strays closer to the retro garage-rock camp of the Strokes and Vines than to Oasis and Blur. With frontman Robert Harvey possessing a yelping howl reminiscent of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and guitarist Adam Nutter filling in the Joe Perry role, the Music excites and impresses with songs like the uber-boogie of "The Truth is No Words," relentless, New Order-like "Float," and pounding "Getaway" with its squealing keyboard. Just as quickly, the Music can wield thumping songs like the ominous "Disco," which turns into a rave-up that could have come straight out of the late '80s Madchester movement. Bestof all is "Take the Long Road and Walk It," an impressive tour de force that's packed with the kind of screaming chords and workmanlike cadence that immediately place you in a packed club with hundreds of other wide-eyed, breathless rock fans. Drag
Personnel includes: K.D. Lang; Jimmie Haskell (conductor); WendyMelvoin (guitar); Kevin Breit (guitar, banjo, mandolin); Greg Leisz (steel guitar); Larry Corbett (cello); Teddy Borowiecki (accordion, keyboards); Joe Lovano (saxophone); Jon Hassell (trumpet); Connie Grauer (piano); Lisa Coleman (keyboards); David Piltch (bass); Abraham Laboriel, Jr., Kim Zick (drums); David Torn (loops); Marva King, Kimberly Brewer, Portia Griffin (background vocals). DRAG is one more inspired nail in the coffin of lang's image as a neo-country singer. On the heels of 1995's electronic/dance-oriented ALL YOU CAN EAT, DRAG purports to be a concept album, with all the songs thematically linked by the common subject of cigarettes and smoking. While this link is tenous, uniting such tunes as the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe" and an otherwise-inexplicable cover of Steve Miller's "The Joker," what really matters here is not the concept, but the music. With production aid from jazz-pop ace Craig Street (Cassandra Wilson, Jimmy Scott), lang offers up a sumptuous collections of ballads, gorgeously arranged and beautifully sung. Despite her reputation as a belter, she approaches the songs on DRAG with grace and subtlety, making this lush collection a stirring, understated pleasure. SKU: 1006448

New Sound A New Star, A
Full title: A New Sound...A New Star - Jimmy Smith At The Organ Volumes 1-3. Personnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); Thornel Schwartz (guitar); Bay Perry, Donald Bailey (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey between February 18 and June 18, 1956. Includes liner notes by Babs Gonzales, Leonard Feather and Francis Wolff. Collected here in a meaty two-disc set are Smith's first three Blue Note releases. Championed as "the world's greatest jazz organist," Smith burst upon the scene in the mid-'50s with a trail-blazing rhythmic and harmonic approach to the Hammond organ that definedthe use of the instrument in jazz combos for the rest of the century. For those unfamiliar with Smith, this set is a perfect place to start. With less of an emphasis of low-key blues numbers than subsequent albums, the work here is informed by the energy and harmonic sophistication of bebop, and Smith is incandescent throughout. Innovative, frantically paced attacks on standards like "The Way You Look Tonight" and "But Not For Me" are interspersed with sensitively painted mood pieces like "Tenderly" and "Willow Weep For Me," and treatments of compositions by other jazz greats (Monk, Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie). There are also a fair number of Smith originals, including the Latin-tinged starts and stops of "Judo Mambo," and "Fiddlin' The Minors," a mini-epic of blinding riffs. SKU: 1004110

Inner Mounting Flame, The
Mahavishnu Orchestra: John McLaughlin (acoustic & electric guitars); Jerry Goodman (acoustic & electric violins); Jan Hammer (Fender Rhodes, ring modulator, piano); Rick Laird (electric bass); Billy Cobham (drums). Includes liner notes by John McLaughlin. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology. As British bands like Yes, ELP, and Genesis extended the borders of rock & roll, John McLaughlin had seized the opportunity to do the same with jazz. The first stars of the jazz/rock fusion camp, the Mahavishnu Orchestra played sellout concerts, sold records in quantities previously unheard of by jazz musicians, and captured a crossover audience of forward-looking jazzdevotees and progressive rock fans. The music on THE INNER MOUNTING FLAME is incendiary and highly improvisational. Well-conceived unison melodic passages structure each tune, and McLaughlin and company play like the virtuosos they are throughout. "The Noonward Race" features a bluesy, yet harmonically dissonant solo from McLaughlin, and the frenetic drumming of Billy Cobham. In contrast, in "A Lotus on Irish Streams," McLaughlin soars passionately on an acoustic guitar, while violinist Jerry Goodman adds a simple, folky melody. SKU: 1010022

Swizz Beatz Presents Ghetto Stories [PA]
Personnel: Swizz Beatz (programming); Ron Isley (vocals); Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes, Shyne, Mashonda, LL Cool J, Styles, Lil' Kim, N.O.R.E., Baby, Yung Wun, Eve, Bounty Killer, Nas, Fat Joe, Cassidy, Ja Rule, Snoop Dogg, TQ (rap vocals); TJ Beatz(spoken vocals); Metallica. Producers include: Swizz Beatz, Tony Lopez, Saint Denson, Kid Klever, J. Brown. With Swizz Beatz boasting a background as a celebrated producer/songwriter/remixer/DJ whose credits include membership in the Ruff Ryders crew, it's no surprise how many famous friends popped by to appear on his debut SWIZZ BEATZ PRESENTS G.H.E.T.T.O. Much like his work with others that eschewed the use of samples in place of original party-ready beats, Swizz keeps this winning formula intact whether he's pumping strings to give the title cut an operatic feel or the ominous blaxploitation groove permeating "Guilty," a duet with dancehall superstar Bounty Killer. Such is Swizz's pull that he's got Metallica and Ja Rule tearing it up on the thunderous "We Did It Again," Nas and Fat Joe tossing in their two cents on the "Salute Me" remix, and Ron Isley lending his dulcet tones to the smooth Jadakiss workout "Big Business." Other notable names include upcoming R&B thrush Mashonda teasing LL Cool J in the sensual "Ghetto Love" as well as holding her own against Shyne in a track of the same name that ended up being the last recording he worked on before being sent off to prison. SWIZZ BEATZ PRESENTS G.H.E.T.T.O. is that rare combination of an extensive Rolodex meeting an exemplary talent. SKU: 1078334

Bing Bing Bing
Charlie Hunter Trio: Charlie Hunter (8-string guitar); Dave Ellis (tenor saxophone); Jay Lane (drums). Additional personnel: Jeff Cressman (trombone); Ben Goldberg (clarinet); David Phillips (pedal steel guitar); Scott Roberts (percussion). Recorded at Mobius Music,San Francisco, California. Charlie Hunter's 1995 Blue Note debut landed the guitar virtuoso square on the music map as one of the most exciting new voices in jazz. His custom-built eight-string guitar (allowing him to play bass and guitar simultaneously) and taste for the funk was a revelation to younger listeners hungry for music rooted in jazz tradition but also encompassing more recent groove-driven movements such as hip-hop. When scribes tried to pigeonhole Hunter as a leader of San Francisco's acid jazz movement, the Bay Area native quickly dismissed the tag, referring to his music as "antacid jazz." The trio (with tenor saxophonist Dave Ellis and drummer Jay Lane) cuts deep, organic grooves through tunes such as "Greasy Granny" and "Fistful of Haggis," while the blue jazz ballad "Bing, Bing, Bing, Bing" plays like a meditative summer stroll along a North California beach. Elsewhere the trio brilliantly reshapes Nirvana's "Come as You Are" into a soulful samba. It's both a fitting tribute to Kurt Cobain, and a testament to Charlie Hunter's ability to drop-kick jazz into the 21st Century. SKU: 1006700

Ashes Of The Wake (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Lamb Of God: Randy Blythe (vocals); Mark Morton, Willie Adler (guitar); John Campbell (bass instrument); Chris Adler (drums). Recording information: Water Music Recorders, Hoboken, New Jersey; LOG, Richmond, VA. Following up a successful appearance at Ozzfest 2004, prog-metal outfit Lamb of God released ASHES OF THE WAKE, its major-label debut. Wielding a sound that's crushingly heavy while still maintaining a righteous groove, LOG serves up in-your-face metal that's sure to please fans of Pantera and Slayer. Frontman Randy Blythe howls with a voice reminiscent of Venom's Kronos, as he rants about finding salvation in vice ("The Faded Line") and organized crime's code of honor ("Omerta"). Fueled by the double-kick-drumferocity of skin-basher Chris Adler, guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler lay down a two-pronged attack that falls somewhere between the pummeling assault of classic American thrash and the more melodic and orchestral complexity of European metal. Anyone doubting Adler and Morton's chops need listen no further than the gnarly instrumental title cut, which finds Lamb of God's axe-wielders forming a musical relay team with guest guitarists Alex Skolnick (Testament) and Chris Poland (Megadeth) amid interview sound-bites of soldiers serving in Iraq. ASHES OF THE WAKE finds Lamb of God at the forefront of a new wave of American metal. SKU: 6569164

Lesser Matters
Debut album, after six years together, from Swedish quartet inspired by the 80s shoegazingsound of My Bloody Valentine, the Cocteau Twins and the Jesus & Mary Chain. Already being hailed as a minor classic, it presents a reserved, melancholy take on the style, refusing to blatantly rock out, but instead creating an intimate, comforting mood. Includes the single 'Where Damage Isn't Already Done'. SKU: 6558435

Disciplined Breakdown
Collective Soul: Ed Roland (vocals, guitar); Ross Childress, Dean Roland (guitar); Will Turpin (bass); Shane Evans (drums). Additional personnel: The Memphis Horns (horns); Mike Childers (organ, Clavinet, background vocals); Luis Enrique (percussion). Collective Soul's third album shows off a newfound confidence and newly rich and complex musical textures. As always, the tunes are melodic and the arrangements thoughtful, and Ed Roland provides searching lyrics that range in tone from the deep sadness of "Maybe" ("This blessedness of life/Sometimes brings me to my knees") to the unabashed optimism of "Full Circle" ("One fine morning I'll awake/To love's return...I believe love goesround and round"). DISCIPLINED BREAKDOWN is brimming with layers of vocal harmony, sometimes verging on the ethereal (the spirit of the Beatles is present on "Crowded Head"), while edgy guitar riffs enliven most of the tracks, occasionally providing glimpses of '70s hard rock, funk and dance beats. It all blends together into undeniably catchy rock songs. SKU: 1005680

Reasonable Doubt
Personnel includes: Jay-Z, The Notorious B.I.G., Foxy Brown, Memphis Bleek, Big Jaz, Sauce Money (rap vocals); Mary J. Blige, Mecca (vocals). Producers include: Knowbody, Ski, Clark Kent, DJ Premier, DJ Irv . Engineers: Joe Quinde, Eddie S. Recorded at D&D Studios, New York, New York. In the past few years, the hip-hop community hasembraced a lot of rappers who falsify their identity with hard-rock gangster images, and created superstars out of average MCs. But where others proclaim, Brooklyn, New York native Jay-Z lyrically illustrates that he knows first hand what he is talking about. Jay-Z mixes original concepts with an imperative rhyming style, showing his versatility on cuts like "22 Two's" and "Friend Or Foe," while still managing to school youngsters on tracks like "Can I Live" and "Regrets," teaching them to learn from his mistakes. Not only is REASONABLE DOUBT heads above other rap albums lyrically, it's a musical gem as well, with production that ranges from the R&B flavor of DJ Clark Kent to the rugged beats of the flawless DJ Premier. As rap's premier underground MCs begin to emerge above ground, Jay-Z's debut album sounds like the next classic. SKU: 1000780

Recycler
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums, percussion). This is ZZ Top's tenth album. ZZ Top entered the '90s with what was billed as a back-to-basics release, 1990's RECYCLER, five years after its previous album. The trio abandoned the Top 40, platinum-paved path it had followed on such 1980's mega-hits as ELIMINATOR and AFTERBURNER, to return to the blues rock boogie that had made it one of rock's finest outfits. While there were stillsynths sprinkled here and there (though nothing as severe as its '80s output), there's no denying the greatness of the big rockers "My Head's in Mississippi," and "Doubleback," which was featured in the Michael J. Fox movie "Back to the Future Part III." SKU: 1011322

Duets Vol.2
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Stevie Wonder (vocals, harmonica, piano); Antonio Carlos Jobim (vocals, piano); Gladys Knight, Jon Secada, Linda Ronstadt, Crissie Hynde, Willie Nelson, Luis Miguel, Patti LaBelle, Steve Lawrence, Eydie Gorme, Lena Horne, Jimmy Buffett, Lorrie Morgan, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Neil Diamond (vocals); Ron Anthony (guitar); Arturo Sandoval (trumpet); Bill Miller, Terry Trotter (piano); Clay Ostwald (keyboards); Chuck Berghofer (bass); Gregg Field (drums); Rita Quintero, Jorge Noriega (background vocals); Charlie Pollard, Paolo Jobim, Juanito Marquez, Edwin Bonilla, Jorge Casas, Ed Calle. Includes liner notes by Bill Zehme. DUETS II won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance. Even as Tony Bennett soars atop the charts, riding the crest of a phenomenal youth revival, The Chairman Of The Board, The Sultan Of Saloon Singers himself, swaggers back to the microphone for a series of cross-generational duets. DUETS II honors his timeless stylings, while celebrating the greatness of the American song itself. With a hip, ad-libbed intro from composer Stevie Wonder (on piano and chromatic harmonica) setting the stage,"For Once In My Life" juxtaposes the swing and gospel stylings of Sinatra and a Pip-less Gladys Knight. Likewise, R&B diva Patti LaBelle provides a near-operatic counterpoint on Rodgers & Hart's "Bewitched." On a more tender note, Sinatra and Lena Horne turn Gershwin's "Embraceable You" into an autumnal paean to true love, while Linda Rondstadt brings a frosty, delicate sense of sentimentality to her harmonies on "Moonlight In Vermont." Among the more curious pairings are a laid-back "A Foggy Day" with Willie Nelson, a sassy exchange with Chrissie Hynde on the GUYS AND DOLLS showstopper "Luck Be A Lady," and a flagwaving "The House That I Live In" with Neil Diamond. But a pairing of Sinatra, Sr. with Frank Sinatra, Jr. provides the real fireworks on DUETS II: a hard-swinging rendition of Van Heusen & Cahn's "My Kind Of Town," with brassy charts by Sinatra's favorite arranger, Nelson Riddle. Riddle tosses in a tasty figure from Basie's famous "April In Paris" chart as a closing tidbit. SKU: 1006295

Evergreen
Echo & The Bunnymen: Ian McCullouch (vocals, guitar); Will Sergeant (guitar); Les Pattinson (bass). Additional personnel: Ed Shearmur (piano); Adam Peters (keyboards); Michael Lee (drums); The London Metropolitan Orchestra. Principally recorded at Barry Barlow's Doghouse Studio, Henley On Thames, England in February 1997. The tellingly titled EVERGREEN finds all the surviving charter members of Echo & The Bunnymen recording togetherfor the first time since 1987. The band made one album without singer Ian McCulloch before disintegrating. Band members collaborated on various projects over the years, but only as a cohesive unit have they ever truly hit their mark. McCulloch's voice is still velvety and pure, at once exuberant and tragic. His lyrics marry fragmented wordplay ("I'm in my prime and you're wasting my time/ You're denominator commonest low") with the swaggering self-confidence that has long been his trademark. Will Sergeant's guitar playing is, as ever, an inspired mix of frenetic stabs, swirling arpeggios, and soaring melodic accompaniment. Not to be overlooked, bassist Les Pattinson holds it all together admirably, delivering a tuneful, confident low end. EVERGREEN marks the triumphant return for Liverpool's other favorite sons- free of formula, but true to the promise of their majestic early years. SKU: 6421375

Use Your Illusion Vol.1
Guns N' Roses: Izzy Stradlin (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, percussion); Axl Rose (vocals, piano, keyboards, keyboard programming, sound effects); Slash (acoustic, classical, electric & slide guitars, slide dobro, 6-string bass, background vocals); Duff McKagan (acoustic guitar, bass, background vocals); Dizzy Reed (piano, organ, Clavinet, background vocals); Matt Sorum (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Shannon Hoon, Alice Cooper (vocals); Mike Monroe (harmonica, saxophone); Matthew McKagan (horns, keyboard programming); Rachel West (horns); Tim Doyle (tambourine); Johann (keyboard programming, sound effects); Mike Clink, Bruce Foster (sound effects); Stuart Bailey, Reba Shaw (background vocals). Recorded at A & M Studios, Record Plant, Studio 56 and Image Recording, Hollywood, California; Conway Studios, Los Angeles, California; Metalworks Recording Studios, Toronto, Ontario. Four years after becoming an uninvited guest at the party that is the music industry with its seminal debut, APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION, Guns N' Roses released USE YOUR ILLUSION I &II. Thanks to a reckless approach toward life and music, G'N'R was constantly at the center of controversy and the result was that much of it was chronicled on this two-volume project. By this time, original drummer Steven Adler had been dismissed due to alleged drug dependency problems and was replaced by the Cult's Matt Sorum. Keyboardist Dizzy Reed was also added as a member. ILLUSION I found Axl Rose ranting on songs about being sued by a neighbor ("Right Next Door to Hell"), dysfunctional relationships ("Back off Bitch"), and a drug overdose ("Coma"). Amid all the spewed bile, G'N'R scored three Top 40 hits with a Wings cover ("Live and Let Die"), a piano-driven, Elton John-flavored epic ("November Rain"), and a hard-edged ballad ("Don't Cry"). Celebrity cameos include a then unknown Shannon Hoon, Hanoi Rocks' Mike Monroe, and Alice Cooper, who makes a particularly sinister contribution to "The Garden." SKU: 1005250

Uplift Mofo Party Plan, The [PA] [Remastered]
The Red Hot Chili Peppers: Anthony Kiedis (vocals); Hillel Slovak (guitar, sitar, background vocals); Flea (bass, background vocals); Jack Irons (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Norwood Fisher, Angelo Moore, David Kenoly, Michael Beinhorn, Annie Newman (background vocals). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Flea. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24 Bit Technology. 1987's THE UPLIFT MOFO PARTY PLAN was the album in which the Red Hot Chili Peppers' sound came together. Producer Michael Beinhorn (who would later go on to produce such other alt-rock notables as Soundgarden and Hole) helped the Peppers incorporate more of a hard-rock approach to their already rich blend of funk and punk, with often explosiveresults. The songwriting is more focused this time around, while the playing is consistently energetic. Though the album is strong on the whole, selected highlights include "Fight Like a Brave," "Funky Crime," "Me and My Friends," "Backwoods," "Behind the Sun," "No Chump Love Sucker," and the X-rated "Special Secret Song Inside." This would be the best (and sadly, final) album to feature the Kiedis/Flea/Slovak/Irons lineup--Slovak died from a drug overdose in 1988, and Irons exited soon after, turning up several years later as the drummer for Pearl Jam.
