Over the course of nearly 30 years, more than 15 albums, four name changes, and one near-death experience, John Mellencamp forged a widely imitated sound that established the blueprint for the musical sub-genre commonly referred to as "Heartland Rock." The Indiana native made a name for himself by combining a powerful, Stones-like guitar attack with a country twang, along with rhythms informed by tough, blue-eyed soul and a lean lyrical style dotted with striking Steinbeck-esque rural imagery.
Remarkably enough, Mellencamp pulled the unusual trick of becoming a genuine pop superstar while maintaining a regular-guy image. Close listening to any of the tracks on WORDS & MUSIC, however, reveals Mellencamp's secret--he really is a regular guy. Tunes such as the defiant "Authority Song" and the gentle "Hand to Hold On To" are sung without a trace of irony, which is a big part of his music's appeal. Another thing that separates Mellencamp from his contemporaries is his willingness to tinker with his signature sound. Brazilian metallists Sepultura continue their aural onslaught. They're one of the best of their ilk, with vocalist Derrick Green's contribution particularly apparent here; he combines genre-specific cookie monster vocals with socially conscious lyrics in a way that renders the latter intelligible without compromising the undeniable aggression and excitement of the former.
The guitars, of course, are the vital ingredient--they're unbelievably heavy sounding, and grind away over Igor Cavaliera's passionate twin kick drumming with a ferocious intensity. But the band always finds room for some nice production touches--witness the sitar breakdown in "One Man Army." There's real intelligence and sonic sensitivity at work here. The smart, politically savvy lyrics mostly belie the musical belligerence, with Jello Biafra contributing a particularly sly, insinuating performance on "Politricks." NATION swings and rocks, loudly--but it'll make you think, too.

Originally released in 1971, WHAT'S GOING ON remains a landmark album, one that redefined music with powerful, anthemic songs that remain pertinentto this day. Up to that point, R&B albums were collections of singles, with secondary material rounding out the LPs. Marvin Gaye changed all this by releasing a concept album that went beyond the usual boy-meets-girl scenario, weaving together an aural collage of societal ills.
"Crime is increasing/Trigger-happy policing," from "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," is as potent a line today as it was over twenty years ago. With the country still divided over the Vietnam War, the title track became a rallying cry for peace. Layered with lush orchestrations, heavenly background vocals and traces of jazz in particular spots, WHAT'S GOING ON never sounds musically dated. The critical and commercial success of Marvin Gaye's opus also enabled other artists to break free from the creative shackles imposed by Motown, and experience more autonomy in the making of their music.

Ray Benzino may be a successful hip-hop recording artist but before he appeared as a performer, first with Made Men and then solo, he made his name as a top-shelf producer. As such, his credits include Nas and others. Making his own artistic statement on REDEMPTION, he certainly makes good use of his phone book, enlisting the aid of Jadakiss, Wyclef,Scarface, and a host of other hip-hop luminaries. Though the band only made three studio albums before disbanding in 1999, the Verve still proved to be one of the most compelling rock groups to emerge from Britain in the '90s. THIS IS MUSIC: THE SINGLES 92-98 upholds the claim, and gives 14 prime examples of the ensemble's sharp songcraft and riveting sonic sweep. Powered by the rumbling of bassist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury, and characterized by Nick McCabe's swirling guitar-scapes and Richard Ashcroft's hypnotic vocals, the Verve created a hugely expansive sound that drew from '60s psychedelia, mainstream rock, and an indie shoegazer ethos.

Recorded almost a year before GETZ/GILBERTO, WHAT'S NEW offers the flip side to that definitive recording of early Sixties bossa nova. Getz and Gilberto carefully distilled their music down to its essentials; the vocal and sense of song came first, and Getz's warm, furry tenor obligatti made the perfect complement to Gilberto's half-talked, half-sung vocals.
In contrast, WHAT'S NEW is an extrovert's record. The ensemble on "If Ever I Would Leave You" and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes" is the same as on Rollins' landmark "pianoless quartet" return to the jazz scene, THE BRIDGE (1961) and guitaristHall, bassist Cranshaw and drummer Riley all dig in and cook behind their leader. Rollins' tone is muscular, his improvisations expansive and his attack confident, at times bordering on strident. "Jungoso" is essentially a dialogue between the tenorist and percussionist Candido, underpinned by Cranshaw's vamp. The same trio blows through the relaxed "Bluesongo." "Brown Skin Gal" marries Latin percussion to a calypso groove and features six-part vocals framing solos by Rollins and Hall.

Though the addition of sound effects (loons on one track, a train on another) might spell disaster in any other context, here they compliment the music in a wonderful way. Not released in the U.S. until 1975, after he'd achieved superstardom, Elton John's first album is as much a part of late-'60s blues-rock and the burgeoning singer-songwriter movement as it is part of the grandiose pop catalog that would soon follow. The eight-minute-plus title song includes a long flute-harmonica-piano jam that wouldn't have been out of place on a Traffic album; the closing "Gulliver/It's Hay Chewed/Reprise" connects a waltz-time requiem with an acoustic-jazz instrumental and (rather audiciously for an unknown singer's debut) a reprise of bits from every song on the album.
Elsewhere, one can find a Lennonesque melody on "Western Ford Gateway," a breezy Summer-Of-Love feel on "Hymn 2000," and recurring imagery of a caged bird dreaming of flying away--most notably in the title song and the harsichord-and-organ tune "Skyline Pigeon." It all bursts with pop-rock melodicism, even when John was adding music to some of collaborator Bernie Taupin's most opaque, image-heavy lyrics. John would later call EMPTY SKY a "naive" record, but it contains the seeds of almost everything he would eventually do.
