Zenyatta Mondatta [Remastered] [ECD]
The Police: Sting (vocals, bass); Andy Summers (guitar); Stewart Copeland (drums). Recorded at Wissellord Studios, Hilversum, Netherlands. For their third album, the Police, now official megastars, began to move away from the new wave-reggae hybrid they introduced on their first two releases. There's a bit more funk in the rhythm section on tunes like "Driven To Tears" (a tune thatalso represents a heightened socio-political bent in the lyrics). Andy Summers' avant-garde roots are also more apparent here, as on the eastern-flavored "Behind My Camel," and the quirky, abstract tone of "Shadows in the Rain." On the ominous-but-catchy "Don't Stand So Close To Me" Sting plays Cole Porter, rhyming "shake and cough" with "Nabokov." The album is best known for the monster hit "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da," ostensibly a nonsense song, but under the surface the lyrics bear a serious message about global alienation and postmodern disaffection. Love Scenes
Personnel: Diana Krall (vocals, piano); Russell Malone (guitar); Christian McBride (bass). Recorded at: Avatar Studios, New York, New York. LOVE SCENES was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. On LOVE SCENES, Diana Krall utilizes the same trio format she used on her critically acclaimed ALL FOR YOU. And it's easy to understand why: the simple instrumentation--Krall plusguitarist Russell Malone and bassist Chrisian McBride--is the perfect setting for her sultry voice and relaxed piano playing. She offers 12 delightful interpretations of well-chosen, romance-related standards. The three musicians have a wonderful rapport (both Malone and McBride have played on previous Krall albums), and each tune exhibits an easy, effortless swing. Krall' s piano playing is sensitive and lyrical on the ballads, and right in the groove on the uptempo numbers. Malone's full, rich tone blends perfectly with Krall's piano accompaniment, and McBride's formidable bass playing punctuates the trio's every nuance on this drumless date. SKU: 1000609

Pop
U2: The Edge (vocals, guitar, organ, keyboards); Bono (vocals, guitar); Adam Clayton (bass); Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums, percussion, programming). Additional personnel: Steve Osborne, Howie B., Flood, Marius De Vries (keyboards); Ben Hillier (programming). Engineers: Mark "Spike" Stent, Howie B., Alan Moulder. Recorded at South Beach Studios, Miami, Florida; Hanover, Windmill Lane Recording Studios and The Works, Dublin, Ireland. POP was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Rock Album. Like much pop music in the mid-1990s, POP is cobbled together out of buzzy synthesizers and reverberant keyboards, techno drum loops and funky live drums, guitars distorted into clouds of metal, vocals you sometimes have to work to hear, and songs that seek God and sex and other important stuff in the world's trash heaps. And it's obsessed, more than anything else, with pop itself. At its most frisky, as on the dance-club single "Discotheque," POP sounds like Oasis backed by the Chemical Brothers (see that combo's recent single "Setting Sun" for comparison). Drop the club beat and add a bright acoustic guitar, as on "Staring At The Sun," and POP sounds like, well, Oasis. This is the kind of future-pop U2 introduced on its watershed 1991 album ACHTUNG, BABY, and POP completes a sort of trilogy. Whereas 1993's ZOOROPA played up the "art" side of this experiment, POP, which finds art-rock influence Brian Eno gone from the producer's seat and techno wiz kid Howie B. taking up some of his space, plays up the pop side. It's the most playful album U2 has ever made, with grooves made for dancing, not thinking, and melodies that explode in your face like bubblegum. Lyrically, U2 is still looking for what it hasn't found, in such places as nouveau-riche "Miami" and the celebrity trash receptacle that is "The Playboy Mansion." Musically, though, U2 seems to have found it, in thesimple, ecstatic click of a dance beat. SKU: 1005854

Peter Gabriel Vol.2 [Remastered]
Personnel: Peter Gabriel (vocals, piano, organ, synthesizer); Sidney McGinnis (acoustic, electric & steel guitars, mandolin, background vocals); Robert Fripp (acoustic & electric guitars, programming); George Marge (recorder); Tony Capello (saxophone); Bayete, Roy Bittan (keyboards); Tony Levin (bass, background vocals); Joey Marotta (drums, background vocals). Engineers include: Steve Short, Ed Sprigg, Michael Getlin. Recorded at Relight Studios, Hilvarenbreek, Holland. All tracks have been digitally remastered. When Peter Gabriel left the comforting group identity of Genesis after almost ten years, it might've been expected that he would want to re-assert his individuality. However, titling his first three albums PETER GABRIEL was bound to confuse at least a few fans into buying the same record twice (not a bad marketing strategy when you think about it). PETER GABRIEL the (second) album allowed Peter Gabriel (the singer) to stretch a bit more than his Bob Ezrin-produced debut. Under the watchful eye of producer/fellow art-rock refugee Robert Fripp, Gabriel stretched his musical palette from the raucous "On The Air" to the fragile "Flotsam and Jetsam" to the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink "D.I.Y." Not as stark as PETER GABRIEL (III) or as funked-up as SECURITY, PETER GABRIEL (II) shows Gabriel ably charting theidiosyncratic nonformula that he follows to this day. SKU: 1076272

Immobile
In the late '90s, France became known primarily for its dance-oriented artists such as Air, Daft Punk, Dimitri from Paris and Kid Loco. Paris' Autour de Lucie, however, recalls France's earlier pop stylings, combining the lyrical and musical sophistication ofSerge Gainsbourg and Francoise Hardy--whose deadpan vocal style is reflected in Valerie Leulliot's lazy, guileless voice--with the kind of chiming guitar pop perfected by British bands on the Cherry Red and Sarah labels in the '80s. Where the band's self-titled 1996 debut occasionally sounded a shade too polite, however, IMMOBILE fields a newfound sonic bite. Leulliot's intoxicating voice and acoustic guitar are still the band's focal points, but on songs like "Selon L'Humeur" and "Atomium," they're surrounded by tougher-sounding guitars and vaguely trip-hop keyboards. IMMOBILE builds on the strengths of Autour de Lucie's debut while suggesting fruitful new avenues for further exploration. SKU: 1017296

Pull My Chain
Personnel includes: Toby Keith (vocals); Biff Watson, Scotty Emerick (acoustic guitar);Brent Mason, Brent Rowan (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Clayton Ivey (piano); Steve Nathan (keyboards); Michael Brignardello (bass); John Robinson, Eddie Bayers (drums); Curtis Young, Scotty Emerick, Curtis Wright (background vocals). From the breezy pop melody of opening cut "I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight" to the near-rap delivery of "I Wanna Talk About Me," it's clear that country traditionalism is not high on Toby Keith's list of priorities for PULL MY CHAIN. While this won't make Keith any friends among the hardcore honky-tonk crowd, that's not his audience to begin with. Those who like their country mixed with pop-rock (the aforementioned album-opener), soul ("I Can't Take You Anywhere"), and delicate, piano-based ballads worthy of Elton John ("Yesterday's Rain," "You Didn't Have as Much to Lose") will find much to admire about Keith's eclecticism. Tying it all together is Keith's friendly, guy-next-door voice, equally able to portray humor, lust, heartache, and pure exuberance. Incidentally, there's more to than Elton John connection than you might think; EJ's longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin contributed to closing rocker "Gimme 8 Seconds." SKU: 1071226

14 Shades Of Grey [PA]
Full title: 14 Shades Of Grey. This limited-edition of 14 SHADES OF GREY includes a bonus DVD featuring a home-movie documentary of the band's history. This is a Hyper CD which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Staind: Aaron Lewis (vocals); Mike Mushok (guitar); Johnny "Old School" April (bass); Jon Wysocki (drums). While many bands lumped under the nu-metal banner seem to rely on angry posturing and shock tactics to sell records, Staind has quietly and consistently topped the sales and radio charts with a stripped-down and emotionally direct approach devoid of gimmickry. On the group's third album 14 SHADES OF GREY, singer Aaron Lewis and crew deliver a distinctly organic-sounding, mature disc that still manages to rock like a wild beast. Powered by the pile-driving yet earthy rhythm section of bassist Johnny April and drummer Jon Wysocki, Staind stands head and shoulders above many of its contemporaries by mixing de-tuned thrash with an old-school rock & roll kick. There's a touch of bluesy Zeppelin mixed in with the angst, and the band's subtle sexiness serves to temper Lewis's darker melodic and lyrical instincts. Featuring songs that address everything from the joyous birth of the singer's daughter ("Zoe Jane") to the tragic death of Alice In Chains vocalist Layne Staley("Layne"), 14 SHADES OF GREY is an unquestionably adult album created by a band at once deafeningly heavy and clearly more concerned with making art than scaring parents. Either/Or
This singer/songwriter can say more with a whisper than most folks can with a scream. The gently insinuating despair of Smith's work communicates volumes about the heartbreak and alienation that is the bane of 20th century boys with toomuch time on their hands. Smith's day job fronting the aggressive post-punk band Heatmiser provides him with the necessary yang to produce the quiet, evocative yin of his solo work. On EITHER/OR, Smith observes a production ethic that retains a lo-fi looseness without sacrificing any sonic clarity. His songs of loss and loneliness have the broken-poet aura of Smog or Mark Eitzel, but he offsets the gloom with a hatful of damnably catchy melodies and progressions, turning suffering into pop and making it signify. Love Story
Personnel: Lloyd Cole (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, bass, keyboards, programming, percussion); Steve Lindsay, Carla Berger, Joey Lee, Brian Jones, Brandi Stewart (vocals); Robert Quine (acoustic & electric guitars); Neil Clarke (electric guitar); Mark Nevin (guitar); Adam Peters (cello, keyboards, percussion, programming); Fred Maher (percussion, programming); Bashiri Johnson (percussion). The Duke Quartet: Lousisa Fuller, Rick Koster, John Metcalfe, Ivan McCready. Producers: Lloyd Cole, Adam Peters;Stephen Street. Engineers include: Adam Peters, Stephen Street, Lloyd Cole. Recorded at Green Street and Dangerous Studios, New York; Townhouse and Master Rock, London, England. Lloyd Cole's last album before an extended vacation spent raising his growing family in Manhattan and western Massachusetts, 1995's LOVE STORY is in many ways a return to the style of his three '80s albums with the Commotions. (That two key Commotions, guitarist Neil Clark and keyboardist Blair Cowan, play on the album makes the connection clear.) After the stylistic experiments of his previous three solo records, LOVE STORY feels like the work of the same hyper-literate--at time self-consciously so--tunesmith who made neo-folk-rock delights like RATTLESNAKES and MAINSTREAM. The wry, at times wistful, lyrics are mature reflections on love and relationships, as befitting the title. A graceful cover of the Chet Baker standard "Let's Get Lost" works better than you might expect, but it's the originals, among Cole's finest, which are the real treat. SKU: 1011366

Faded Seaside Glamour
Delays: Greg Gilbert (vocals, guitar); Aaron Gilbert (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Colin Fox (bass instrument, background vocals); Rowly (drums). Producers: Duncan Lewis; Delay; Graham Sutton. Recording information: Rockfield Studios, Monmouth, England (2004); Moles Studio, Bath, England (2004). A million miles from the moody intensity of the more angst-ridden wing of Britpop (Radiohead, Elbow, Muse), the Delays hearken back instead to the innocent jangle of UK pop-rockcirca 1990 (the Lightning Seeds, the La's). The quartet's debut album, FADED SEASIDE GLAMOUR, is fully as popwise as the best of Coldplay, but the Delays aren't embarrassed to jump in with both feet for a big, bold hook or emotional production flourish (hey, neither were the Beatles). The sound revolves around singer/songwriter/guitarist Greg Gilbert, whose boyish tenor and crafty compositional skills are the stuff of which pop dreams are made. Gilbert's '60s-friendly guitar sparkles through the songs, buoyed by Aaron Gilbert's orchestral keyboard backgrounds and a rhythm section refreshingly free of garage-rock limitations. The time for sparking pure-pop revolutions may be long past, but that doesn't preclude reveling in the lushness of FADED SEASIDE GLAMOUR. SKU: 6553892

Man I Love, The/If You Go
2 LPs on 1 CD: THE MAN I LOVE (1957)/IF YOU GO (1961). Personnel includes: Peggy Lee (vocals); Nelson Riddle, Quincy Jones (arranger);Frank Sinatra (conductor). Digitally remastered by Peter Mew (Abbey Road Studio, London, England). Peggy Lee returned to Capital records in 1957, the year "THE MAN I LOVE" was recorded. She had been singing for Decca and doing radio work in the years prior, her voice all the while finding an increasingly unique and mature expression. She approaches new heights of perfection on masterfully wrought renditions of "Then I'll Be Tired of You" and "My Heart Stood Still." The second album skips ahead a couple years to find Miss Lee continuing her innovations. A perfectionist, she uses what she's got to sweep all contenders from her path. Her skills at revealing the meaning in a song shine forth in exemplary masterpieces such as "Say It Isn't So," where she plumbs the depths of feeling to come up with a new look at an old standard. New Morning
Also available in a 3-pack with NASHVILLE SKYLINE and JOHN WESLEY HARDING. Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, organ, piano); David Bromberg (guitar, dobro); Al Kooper (guitar, French horn, piano, organ); Buzzy Feiten, Ron Cornelius (guitar); Harvey Brooks, Charlie Daniels (bass); Russ Kunkel, Billy Mundi (drums); Hilda Harris, Albertine Robinson, Maeretha Stewart (background vocals). Following the critical and commercial drubbing that SELF PORTRAIT received, Dylan returned with NEW MORNING, in many ways a return to form. With itssepia-colored cover photo of a somewhat rabbinical-looking Dylan, this is a gentle, eclectic album in which Dylan celebrates married life and living in the country. He sings about domestic bliss ("The Man in Me"), and on "Sign on the Window," of the simple joy of being called "Pa" by his kids. This was perhaps the last time that Dylan would release a collection of songs so free of his trademark bile. "It Not For You," later covered by George Harrison, is classic Dylan. Much of the music bears some of the pastoral flavor of NASHVILLE SKYLINE. However the title track and the slide guitar-driven "One More Weekend" really rock. Elsewhere there are moments of quiet beauty: the eloquent "Time Passes Slowly," and the lilting, waltz-time "Winterlude. Dylan can even be heard enjoying himself in "If Dogs Run Free," which finds him uttering comical Beat-style jazz rhymes over scat singing. NEW MORNING ends with "Father of Night," a straightforward benediction that foreshadows some the religious themes that would follow later in the decade. SKU: 1005972

Tutu [Digipak]
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Marcus Miller (various instruments, bass, programming); George Duke (various instruments); Michael Urbaniak (electric violin); Adam Holzman (synthesizer, programming); Bernard Wright (synthesizer); Omar Hakim (drums, percussion); Steve Reid, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Jason Miles (programming). Producers: Tommy LiPuma, Marcus Miller, George Duke. Engineers: Peter Doell, Eric Calvi, Erik Zobler. After 30-plus years with Columbia Records, Miles Davis departed to sign with Warner Brothers Records. TUTU finds Miles entering the world of MIDI, chaperoned by former sideman, Marcus Miller and pop jazz hitmaker Tommy LiPuma, and beat box music would never be the same again. TUTU is the birth of a new kind of cool, based on the emblematic street beats of the mid-1980s, brimming over with orchestrally-styled keyboard programming. The album is a showcase for Miles' evocative muted horn, functioning like a featured vocalist. Not since his work with Gil Evans had Miles deferred so much to a collaborator, and TUTU is a platform for the arranging talents of Miller, who in addition to his distinctive, popping bass lines, plays nearly every instrument on the session--from keyboards to bass clarinet. And from "Tomass" through "Full Nelson," funk is the order of the day. A tune such as "Perfect Way" sets up a striking call and response between major and minor themes, so that Davis is never simply blowing over repetitive modes. "Don't Lose Your Mind" employs an infectious reggae groove, driving rhythmsamples and a taut violin solo by Michael Urbaniak to set up Miles' re-entrance on open horn in a related key center. The title tune colors a catchy shuffle in a rich plumage of contrary motion and secondary themes, while "Portia" reprises a favorite Spanish air, employing synthesizers to parallel the deep brass voicings Gil Evans used so effectively on SKETCHES OF SPAIN. TUTU is a compelling excursion into contemporary pop waters. SKU: 1054676

Back To Mine (Compiled And Mixed By Everything But The Girl)
This is a Various Artists mix CD compiled and mixed by Tracey Thorn, Ben Watt. Includes liner notes by Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt. Everything But the Girl's contribution to the BACK TO MINE series is a pure chill-out mix, perfect for late-night lounging. Low-key, atmospheric folk-pop by Beth Orton and Mary Margaret O'Hara bleeds into down-tempo electronica and hip-hop from DJ Cam, Model 500, and Dubtribe Sound System. As one might expect from the uber-cool Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn, the set is sophisticated, well sequenced, and perfectly modulated. Down-to-earth, soulful vibes emanate on the Roots's "Silent Treatment," balancing out moreabstract, ambient outings like Carl Craig's "A Wonderful Life." The set closes out on Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All Be Free," which serves as a benediction, casting a bright, hopeful light over the entire listening experience. This collection is perfect for moody background, but--unlike many chill-out compilations--it also rewards concentrated listening. SKU: 1055055

Now Or Never
Personnel includes: Nick Carter (vocals); Matthew Gerrard (various instruments, programming); Gary Clark (guitar, bass, keyboards, background vocals); Brian Kierulf (guitar, programming); Esbjorn Ohrwall, Peter Kvint (guitar); Steve Mac (keyboards); Josh Schwartz(bass, background vocals); Georff Dugmore (drums); DJ Spinz (scratches); Martin Brammer, Alison Clark (background vocals). Producers include: Matthew Gerrard, Gary Clark, Brian Kierfulf, Josh Schwartz, Steve Mac. With baby brother Aaron wowing the Nickelodeon set and the Backstreet Boys cooling their collective heels, Nick Carter decided it was NOW OR NEVER to drop a debut. Rocking out a bit more than his former group, this New Yorker still manages to strike an even-handed balance between the ballads sure to make the gals swoon and slightly harder-edged fare. Despite these aspirations to break out on his own, Carter is no fool, as he wisely enlisted Swedish bubblegum gurus Max Martin and Rami to maintain a degree of creative presence in this project. Thus you have numbers like the subtle, mid-tempo pop nugget "Blow Your Mind" and "I Just Wanna Take You Home" (a crash-and-bang song that sounds like a musical sibling of Bon Jovi's "It's My Life"). Otherwise, Carter pleases the girls with potential prom themes like "Do I Have To Cry For You" and the epic "Heart Without A Home (I'll Be Yours)." But like Bryan Adams, Carter realizes kids just wanna rock and he obliges by doing an imitation of the raspy Canuck on the loping "Miss America" and the pseudo-metal anthem "Girls In The USA". Long As I Have You
Personnel: John Hammond (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Washboard Chaz Leary (washboard). Little Charlie & The Nightcats: Charlie Baty (guitar); Rick Estrin (harmonica); Steve Lucky (piano); Ronnie James Weber (bass); June Core (drums). Recorded at Russian Hill Recording, San Francisco, California and Paul McManus Recording, San Diego, California. Includes liner notes by Bob Vorel. LONG AS I HAVE YOU was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album. On his 35th album, John Hammond continues his quest to carry on the blues tradition by delving into the catalogs of giants such as Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers and Willie Dixon. Backing Hammond on most of LONG AS I HAVE YOU are Little Charlie and the Nightcats, a Chicago quintet who've established themselves via a long-time association with Alligator Records. Hammond's growls and crooning are perfectly complimented by guitarist Charlie Baty's smooth, West Coast style of playing, particularly on the title track and "So Many Roads, So Many Trains," songs that bring to mind smoky bars and lots of drinking in a dark corner. Rick Estrin's harp playing does justice to a pair of Sonny Boy Williamson nuggets ("Don't Start Me Talkin'," "Sad To Be Alone"), and his songwriting contribution is a Bo Diddley-esque number that Hammond wraps his vocals around ("I Feel So Sorry"). Wrapping up Hammond's album are a batch of J.J. Cale-produced numbers that find this student of the blues and accompanist Washboard Chaz chugging along in a manner that makes you forget that only two people are playing. SKU: 1003772
