Inna Heights
Personnel includes: Buju Banton, Beres Hammond (vocals); Michelle Jackson (spoken vocals); Steven Stanley (keyboards); Twiggy, Dorette Wisdom, Danny Browne, Pam Hall, Juliet Nelson, Jamali (background vocals); Frank Burt, Keith Green, C. Sharp, Steven Marsden, Sly Dunbar, Donald Dennis, O.D., Andrew Thomas, Dean Fraser, Mafia, Fluxy, Wycliffe Johnson, David Cole, Egbert, Robert Browne, Toots Hibbert, Red Rat. Producers: Mark "Buju Banton" Myrie, Donovan German, Danny Browne. Engineers include: Michael Cooper, Steven Stanley, Andre Tyrell. INNA HEIGHTS was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Reggae Album. Those who despair that reggae hasn't been the same since the passing of Bob Marley will rejoicewhen they listen to Buju Banton. Without sounding like an imitation, Banton seems to have derived the most of his stylistic inspiration from Marley. This is melodic reggae with an irresistible beat that's easily accessible to those who might not be hard-core reggae fans, without appearing watered-down or "commercialized." Banton uses '90s technology to carry on Marley's positive-song tradition--there's electronic percussion, but it blends in seamlessly. His voice is a bit similar to Marley's, but is somewhat raspier, and occasionally slips into a rap-influenced dancehall style. Banton even incorporates a bit of dub (echo, reverb and spacy special effects) into his songs, without losing the melodic flow ("My Woman Now"). INNA HEIGHTS will put some bounce into your day. All For Nothing/Nothing For All
Full title: All For Nothing/Nothing For All. ALL FOR NOTHING/NOTHING FOR ALL is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files. ALL FOR NOTHING/NOTHING FOR ALL is a double-disc featuring 16 well-known studio sides culled from their major label albums and 17 previously unreleased tracks, outtakes, B-sides and rarities. It contains a hidden track, "I Don't Know," at the end of the second disc. The Replacements: Paul Westerberg (vocals, guitar); Bob Stinson, Slim Dunlap (guitar); Tommy Stinson (bass); Chris Mars (drums, background vocals); Steve Foley (drums). Producers: Tommy Erdelyi, Jim Dickinson, Matt Wallace, Tony Berg, The Replacements, Scott Litt. Compilation producer: Michael Hill. Engineers include: Joe Hardy, Steve Fjelstad, John Hampton, Matt Wallace, Dan Bates. Includes liner notes by Michael Hill, Bill Flanagan, Holly George-Warren, Peter Jesperson, Seymour Stein, Tommy Erdelyi, Gary Hobbib, Jim Walsh, David Fricke, Karen Schoemer, Jim Dickinson, Bill Holdship, Tommy Keene, Tony Berg, Tim Perell, Matt Wallace, Michael Conway, Joan Jett, Matt Dillon, Scott Litt, John Rzeznik and Gina Arnold. Self-deprecating even from the grave, the greatest rock band of the '80s tempers this retrospective of shoulda-beens and never-wases with an apology: "This isn't a greatest hits disc because, well, there weren't really any hits." There should have been, of course,as disc 1, which features four cuts from each of the 'Mats' four major-label albums, makes clear. There are the indispensable indie-rock anthems "Left of the Dial" and "Alex Chilton" and the equally fine acoustic plaints "Here Comes a Regular" and "Skyway." But the industry didn't have a clue what to do with a band that dared mix bruising, anything-goes rock and roll with sensitive songwriting, and metal guitar squalls with pop hooks (and was funny, to boot). Not until Nirvana came along, that is. Disc 2, on the other hand, is filled with songs the Replacements themselves didn't know what to do with--oddball B-sides, discards and covers, almost all of them released for the first time commercially here. Besides a couple of major lost Paul Westerberg tracks, including the rockingly tuneful "Till We're Nude," this disc is most notable for one unlikely pearl each from bassist Tommy Stinson ("Satellite," the only song he wrote and sang for the 'Mats) and drummer Chris Mars ("All He Wants To Do Is Fish"). There's also a trash-R&B cover, "Jungle Rock," produced by Jim Dickinson in Memphis, that they should have followed up on, and an alternate version of "I Don't Know" (the unlisted final track) that proves, even more than the original, that they knew how to laugh in the face of failure. Bat Out Of Hell
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Meat Loaf (vocals); Ellen Foley (vocals); Todd Rundgren (guitar, keyboards, percussion, background vocals); Edgar Winter (saxophone); Roy Bittan (piano, keyboards); Steve Margoshes, Cheryl Hardwick (piano); Roger Powell (keyboards); Kasim Sultan (bass, background vocals); Max Weinberg, John Wilcox (drums); Jim Steinman (percussion, keyboards); Marvin Lee (percussion), Rory Dodd, Phil Rizzuto (background vocals). Recorded at Bearsville Sound, Bearsville, New York; Utopia Sound, Lake Hill, New York; The Hit Factory, New York; House Of Music, West Orange, New Jersey. Pomp and circumstance of the grandest order for the multi-platinum Meat Loaf and his songwriting mentor, Jim Steinman. The grandiose intro to the title track was indication enough of the tone of the album, with songs stretching out over what at times seemed like musical infinity. Steinman set his songs in evocative wastelands populated by full orchestras and small-town weirdos, 'Paradise By The Dashboard Light' an entiretwo-handed play in itself, and 'Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad', an overblown symphony of regret and unrequited love. Between them, they pretty much provided the balance of the album. A huge success, only to be repeated by its follow-up in 1993. SKU: 1041606

Vavoom
Brian Setzer Orchestra: Brian Setzer (vocals, guitar); Ray Herrmann, Tim Misica, Don Roberts, Jim Youngstrom, Matt Zebley (saxophone); Will Murillo, Kevin Norton, Kye Palmer, Kevin Richardson (trumpet); Robbie Hioki, George McMullen, Scot Ray (trombone); Tony Garnier (bass); Bernie Dresel (drums). Additional personnel includes: Ernie Perez (vocals); Eric Morones (saxophone); Maxi Anderson, Julia Waters, Maxine Waters, Siedah Garrett, Mike Himmelstein, Dave Bassett, Carmen Twillie, Bobbi Page, Andrea Robinson (background vocals). Producers: Peter Collins, David Darling, Glen Ballard. Recorded at Conway Studios, Hollywood, California and Village West Recorder, West Los Angeles, California. "Caravan" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Although the swing movement had cooled down considerably by the time VAVOOM! was released, Brian Setzer and his merry band of swingin' sidemen were still committed to this irresistible and infectious style of music. Admirably, theformer Stray Cat avoided creating a straight-up sequel to the group's prior release--the Grammy-winning, fabulously successful THE DIRTY BOOGIE. For their fourth album, Brian Setzer and his Orchestra add modern nuances to their sound and along the way give Glenn Miller a big band makeover. Female back-up singers, hip-hop beats and loops are used to good effect on "Pennsylvania 6-5000" while lyrics and a new title ("Getting' in the Mood") are added to one of Miller's most famous instrumental classics ("In the Mood"). Otherwise, it's business as usual for this rad hep cat as he mixes original jump blues on "Jukebox," surf in "Drive Like Lightning (Crash Like Thunder)," and rockabilly on "49 Mercury Blues," with some more straightforward covers. Tribute is inescapable as Setzer plays it close to the vest with interpretations of Bobby Darin ("Mack the Knife"), Duke Ellington ("Caravan"), and the Cadillacs ("Gloria"). SKU: 1039590

Living Years, The
Producers: Christopher Neil, Mike Rutherford. Unlike 1985's MIKE AND THE MECHANICS, which gave radio three inescapable songs in 1986, 1989's THE LIVING YEARS only produced one hit single. But that one hit, the churchy title track, was so omnipresent in the winter and spring of 1989 that it has become the band's defining song. Written about the death of Mike Rutherford's father, "The Living Years" is less cloying than a lot of similar tunes. It's the clear highlight of the album, but the other nine songs are more consistently solid than later Mike and the Mechanics albums would be. As always, lead vocals are split between Paul Carrack and ex-Sad Cafe leader Paul Young (not the guy who sang "Everytime You Go Away"). The surprisingly soulful arrangements are based around Rutherford's typically excellent guitar and Carrack's R&B-style keyboards. THE LIVING YEARS is quality MOR pop rock, for those who believe such a thing exists. SKU: 1004365

Dance Of Death
Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Jannick Gers (guitar); Steve Harris (bass); Nicko McBrain (drums). Recorded at Sarm Studios (West), London, England. Thirteen proves to be quite the lucky number for Iron Maiden as DANCE OF DEATH, the 2003 studio offering by these metal legends, picks up where BRAVE NEW WORLD, its predecessor and first album reuniting Bruce Dickinson with the band, left off. In keeping with Maiden's penchant for looking to history and literature for inspiration, songs like the eight-minute plus "Paschendale," with its light use of strings and intriguing time changes, is based on a historic World War I battle. Likewise "Montsegur," a song soaked in soaring leads and a galloping rhythm follows a similar path as an ode to the Cathars, a French religious sect that established its own civilization in the Middle Ages. To be sure, there's more than enough Dark Age-inspired drama in the shape of the supernatural title cut and stampeding "New Frontier," but this U.K. sextet throws a true curve by way of "Journeyman," a closing cut shrouded in strings and acoustic guitar that's every bit asmoving as anything else on DANCE OF DEATH. Space Oddity [Remastered]
SPACE ODDITYwas originally released as MAN OF WORDS, MAN OF MUSIC on Mercury in 1969. SPACE ODDITY is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, 12-string guitar, organ, stylophone, kalimba); Keith Christmas (acoustic guitar); Tim Renwick, Mick Wayne (guitar); Paul Buckmaster (cello); Tony Visconti (flute, recorder, bass); Benny Marshall and Friends (harmonica); Rick Wakeman (electric harpsichord, Mellotron); John Lodge, Herbie Flowers (bass); Terry Cox, John Cambridge (drums). Producers: Gus Dudgeon, Tony Visconti. Engineers: Ken Scott, Malcolm Toft, Barry Sheffield. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew & Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). SPACE ODDITY was the first record on which David Bowie looked and sounded like the Bowie whom the world has come to know. One glance at the spooky, androgynous face that adorns the record was enough to signal that the Anthony Newley-influenced, light-pop singer who sang the novelty number "The Laughing Gnome" a few years earlier was a thing of the past. Leaving behind the mannered, English music hall-isms of his initial recordings, Bowie roughened up the sound, creating a ragged, eclectic mix of folk and rock tinged with electronic sounds. The record yielded his first American hit, and began the singer's soon-to-be meteoric rise to international rock icon-hood. The title track, a sci-fi mini-epic, is an enduring classic in which Bowie squeezes every bit of drama from both his dour low range and the soaring upper reaches of his voice. Even after decades of continued airplay, "Space Oddity" is surprising for its intricate arrangement, nifty guitar playing, and palpable sense of interplanetary estrangement. Other fine and lesser-known musical moments include the sublimely subdued "Letter to Hermione," and the sprawling and strange "Memory of a Free Festival." SKU: 1025304

Deconstructed
Bush: Gavin Rossdale (vocals, guitar); Nigel Pulsford (guitar); Dave Parsons (bass); Robin Goodridge (drums). Additional personnel: Jasmine Lewis (vocals); Andrew Goodsite (guitar). Producers include: Tricky. Engineers include: Chris Haynes, Vaughan Sessions. Taking advantage of the latest craze for electronic dance music, British grunge masters Bush haveinvited the cream of the crop of techno DJs to create their own vision of the "Bush" sound. The result is DECONSTRUCTED, a deeply engrossing collection of heavy drum 'n' bass beats and digital atmospheres. Using the original songs as a jumping-off point, the artists have essentially created new tunes based around familiar themes from earlier Bush albums. In fact, most songs are recognizable only by a bass line or a snippet of the vocal melody. The hit single "Everything Zen" is given two treatments here, and the results couldn't be more different. With its retro drum sound, the Lhasa Fever Mix stays fairly faithful to the original (as far as that is possible in the world of techno), including most of Gavin Rossdale's lyrics and even (gasp!) electric guitar. Its counterpart, the Derek DeLarge mix, has a more in-your-face sound and only hints at the original through the occasional fragment of vocal melody. But these DJs aren't cover artists, nor is their purpose necessarily to pay tribute to Bush. What they have done is create an engaging set of songs doing what they do best; creating something new from something old. SKU: 6480524

Pink Moon
Solo performer: Nick Drake (vocals, guitar, piano). Recorded in 1971. Drake arrived unannounced to drop themaster tapes for this album into his record company's offices before disappearing back into self-imposed seclusion. Pink Moon can be listened to as a diary of its deeply troubled creator's state of mind, a defiantly stark and uncommercial record in marked contrast to the lush autumnal beauty of his first two albums. However, it is arguably Drake's most perfect musical expression. The eleven tracks achieve a haiku-like perfection, with only a piano overdub on the title track intruding on the exquisite stillness achieved by the razor-sharp recording of Drake's acoustic guitar and his delicate voice. Comfort Eagle
Cake: John McCrea (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, bass, percussion, programming); Xan McCurdy (electric guitar, percussion, background vocals); Vince DiFiore (trumpet, keyboards, background vocals); Gabriel Nelson (keyboards, bass, background vocals). Additional personnel: Tyler Pope (guitar, keyboards); Todd Roper (Moog synthesizer, drums, percussion, background vocals). Recorded at Paradise Studios, Sacramento, California and Hyde Street Studios, San Francisco, California. John McCrea's off-key, languid half-rap, half-croon rambles over horn-laden indie-rock and crashes into Mariachi-band melodies while he dashes off less patently goofy than off-kilter lyrics such as "with fingernails that shine like justice." It's a formula that doesn't sound like a sure success for one album, let alone a slew, yet COMFORT EAGLE would bring Sacramento band Cake's total to four overwhelmingly catchy albums over six years. Perhaps due to the pop crossover of singles like "The Distance" and "Never There," it's easy to forget that Cake is stylistically closer to Pavement than to all thefly-by-night goof-rock bands. While McCrea's lyrics are winking, referential, hyper-self-aware, and occasionally smug or silly, they also wind appealingly, wax cleverly, and are highly memorable; not a word seems out of place. COMFORT EAGLE abounds with hooks from the trickling keyboards of the magnificent and oblique "Meanwhile Rick James..." to their ubiquitous alluring trumpet on opening single "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" and the emphatic catch-phrase "he is calling you dude" lining the title track. For COMFORT EAGLE, Cake is back at their full complement of five with the integration of guitarist Xan McCurdy into the fold and the tightness flows through this hearty and eclectic record. Mose Chronicles Live In London Vol.2, The
Full title: The Mose Chronicles: Live In London Vol. 2. Personnel: Mose Allison (vocals, piano); Jim Mullen (guitar); Roy Babbington (bass); Mark Taylor (drums). Recorded live at the Pizza Express, London, England on January 21 & 22, 2000. Includes liner notes by Ben Sidran. This live disc was recorded in 2000, the year that marked Mose Allison's 50th anniversary as a professional musician. He's accompanied here by a supple trio of Roy Babbington on bass, Jim Muller on guitar, and Mark Taylor on drums. Allison's singing and piano playing are in peak form. His blues/jazz vocal style has allowed him topass through the decades--from young man through middle age, and on into his elder years--with style and grace. The set finds him revisiting songs from throughout his career ("City Home" and "Baby Please Don't Go" are among his earliest numbers), including some of his most well known and enduring (the quirky "Your Molecular Structure," the sarcastic "Your Mind's On Vacation"). That these songs all come off as perfectly contemporary is a testament to the timelessness of both Allison's songwriting and his choice of cover material. The live recording sparkles with wit and warmth. This second of two volumes holds delights for both longtime fans and newcomers unfamiliar with Allison's work, as it does double duty as a de facto best-of. SKU: 1069690

Calling All Stations
Genesis: Ray Wilson (vocals); Mike Rutherford (guitar); Tony Banks (keyboards). Additional personnel: Nir Zidkyahu, Nick D'Virgilio (drums). Producers: Nick Davis, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford. Recorded at The Farm, Surrey, England. CALLING ALL STATIONS, Genesis' first post-Phil Collins release finds founding members Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford rebounding nicely in a situation that would debilitate many other bands. Newcomer Ray Wilson has a vocal style reminiscent of Paul Carrack that neatly falls between his predecessors Collins and Peter Gabriel. Musically, the band continues along the same art-rock path of seamless songs marked by slick guitar-and-keyboard textures. Never going beyond mid-tempo at any point, Genesis mixes in dollops of Brazilian percussion ("Congo") and pseudo-funk ("Small Talk"). CALLING ALL STATIONS is a carefully-constructed record that coolly ebbs and flowsas Wilson makes his mark with this British institution. SKU: 1004761

Vanilla Sky
"Vanilla Sky" nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Song Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. For former Rolling Stone scribe turned director Cameron Crowe, music serves as the muse for his filmmaking. For his American remake of the Spanish thriller "Abre Los Ojos," Crowe and longtime collaborator Danny Bramson created an eclectic soundtrack that ties in perfectly with the movie'ssurrealistic shadings. The post-modern bag of tricks includes classic psychedelia by The Monkees ("Porpoise Song [Theme From 'Head']"), a gem by Iceland's Sigur Ros (the ambient "Svefn-G-Englar"), and contributions from the mighty Radiohead (a jittery "Everything In Its Right Place"), and lesser-known Looper (an infectiously funky "Mondo '77"). Elsewhere, the ex-critic feeds his classic rock cravings with Paul McCartney's brand new pining title track, a remixed version of Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill," and a vintage live version of Bob Dylan's "Fourth Time Around." Along with great choices by The Chemical Brothers, Jeff Buckley, and Josh Rouse are a pair of songs by R.E.M., the previously released "Sweetness Follows" and newly recorded jangle, "All The Right Friends." The most pleasant surprise is the Mazzy Star-flavored dream-pop of "I Fall Apart" composed by Nancy Wilson and sung by Julianna Gianni(aka Cameron Diaz). SKU: 1069777

Empathy/A Simple Matter Of Conviction
Contains 2 Lps on 1 CD. Includes liner notes by Don Gold, Morgan Ames, Chuck Briefer and James Isaacs. Digitally remastered by Tom Ruff (Polygram Studios). EMPATHY: Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Monty Budwig (bass); Shelly Manne (drums). Recorded in New York, New York on August 14, 1962. A SIMPLE MATTER OF CONVICTION: Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Eddie Gomez (bass); Shelly Manne (drums). Recorded in New York, New York on October 4, 1966. This 1989 reissue of Bill Evans' EMPATHY and A SIMPLE MATTER OF CONVICTION showcases the early years of this legendary pianist. EMPATHY was recorded in the summer of '62, just 13 months after Evans had lost his astonishing young bassist, Scott LaFaro, in a fatal automobile accident. Evans' use of complex left-handed voicings, together with his artful sense of melody, make "Let's Go Back to the Waltz" (a tune that actually morphs into an uptempo 4/4 swing), and "Danny Boy," more than solid performances. In fact, "Danny Boy" is arguably one of Evans' finest moments on record. Backed by the little knownbut first-class bassist, Monty Budwig, and the great Shelly Manne on drums, EMPATHY emphasizes the adroitness of all three musicians. A SIMPLE MATTER OF CONVICTION was recorded some four years later, but it retains much of the same musical playfulness and humor found on EMPATHY. Here, Evans and Manne are joined by Eddie Gomez on bass for the first time. The 22 year-old bassist is in fine form on all nine tracks. Evans himself displays remarkable harmonic invention on colorful renditions of "Star Eyes" and "Stella by Starlight." SKU: 3103633

Teenage Dream
TEENAGE DREAM [EP] consists of seven remixed versions of the IQU song "Teenage Dream." IQU, formerly ICU, found the lo-fi/electronic audience while on tour with the Flaming Lips and Cornelius. The trio was a great match for Cornelius' electronic pop and the Flaming Lips' multi-track psychedelia. Combining the influences of their tour mates into a spooky yet toe-tapping, electronicyet punk sound, IQU manage to capture many genres. For TEENAGE DREAM, their second full-length, IQU invited seven other artists to remix the title track. The artists, who include Looper, Lexanculpt, and Contentrick interpreted the story behind the song and the answer to the question, "what did you dream of when you were a teenager?", and set it to music. Highlights include the dubby downtempo "Dub ID" by Tokyo and Kids and the bonus track (on the cd version only) by Sonic Boom. SKU: 1051894

Band Of Gypsys (Live At Fillmore East)
These performances are culled from four legendary concerts at New York's Fillmore East, including 13 previously unreleased tracks. Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar); Billy Cox (bass); Buddy Miles (drums). Producer: Heaven Research. Compilation producers: Janie Hendrix, John McDermott, Eddie Kramer. Recorded live at The Fillmore East, New York, New York on December 31, 1969 & January 1, 1970. Includes liner notes by John McDermott. With Army buddy Billy Cox on bass and the Electric Flag's Buddy Miles on drums, Hendrix played four shows at the Fillmore East that closed out one decade and welcomed in another. This record (in addition to the video of the same name and the BAND OF GYPSYS album) documentsthese performances. Material he'd done with the Experience ("Stone Free," "Wild Thing") is mixed in with newer songs he'd worked on with the Gypsys, including "Power Of Soul" and "Machine Gun." Unlike his tenure with the Experience, Hendrix shares the spotlight with his new trio, with Buddy Miles performing a mini-set of "We Gotta Live Together," "Changes," and a cover of Howard Tate's "Stop." Newer songs such as "Earth Blues" and "Who Knows" ooze with synergy, particularly between Cox and Hendrix. For all the chemistry however, Hendrix remains the master. His crisp reading of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" starts out in a straightforward enough manner before Hendrix begins destroying worlds with a high-flying style that dances around the edges of self-indulgence into a place of pure genius. Cool For Cats
Squeeze: Chris Difford, Glenn Tilbrook (vocals, guitar); Julian "Jools" Holland (vocals, keyboards); Harry Kakoulli (bass); Gilson Lavis (drums). All trackshave been digitally remastered. With their second album Squeeze truly hit their stride. The crazily hopped- up arrangements and murky production of their debut gave way to more sophisticated approaches on every front. The album's staying power is demonstrated by no less than four songs having become relative staples for the band over the years--the title song, along with "Slap And Tickle," "Up The Junction," and "Goodbye Girl." They also proudly imbue a couple of the songs with a strong dose of their very British-ness ("Cool For Cats" had the strongest U.K. vocal inflection of any song to cross the ocean in the late seventies outside of Ian Dury). Chris Difford's lyrics find their way into thornier subject matter than most writers in the pop world tend to explore and, combined with Glenn Tilbrook's McCartney-esque melodies and phrasing, the listener is drawn in by the sweet seduction of it all.
