Bobby Digital In Stereo
Personnel: RZA; Lisa L'Anson, Victorie Heathcole, Lorenza Calamanderi (vocals); Frank "Foxy" Niedlich, Angel Cake, Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Ghostface Killah, Holocaust, Dr. Doom, SommersAnd Ndira, MSx Roxy, Ras Kass, Black Knights, Royal Fam, Jamie Clan, Force MDs, Masta Killa, Killarmy, Tekitha. Producers: RZA, King Tech, Inspectah Deck. Engineers include: RZA, Nolan "Dr. No" Moffitte, Gabe Chiesa. The Wu-Tang brand name is to hip-hop as Good Year is to tires. When the Clan is involved, you can be certain you're dealing with a quality product. RZA's long-awaited solo album is no exception. Sure, his Wu-Tang brethren pop up all over the place, and a little help from friends like Ghostface Killah, Method Man and ODB is something any hip-hop artist would be a fool to refuse. But BOBBY DIGITAL ultimately belongs to RZA alone. Dark and atmospheric, it presents a very personal world, constructed by RZA to pull the listener into a unique audio experience. Beat-heavy but not really danceable, well-produced but hardly slick, BOBBY DIGITAL is an expertly textured, occasionally unsettling journey, with the Wu-Tang sound nothing more than a jumping off point. Fans of the clan won't be disappointed, but they'll most likely be surprised. SKU: 1005287

Dirty Sexy Knights In Paris [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Audiovent: Jason Boyd (vocals); Benjamin Einziger (guitar, piano, background vocals); Paul Fried (bass, background vocals); Jamin Wilcox (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Full Kilt Studio, North Hollywood,California and Larabee East, Los Angeles, California. Audiovent may boast bloodlines to Incubus (singer Jason is the brother of the latter's frontman Brandon Boyd, while guitarist Ben's older sib is Incubus fretman Mike Einziger), but a complex and melodic approach towards music are the only similarities between the two bands. Throughout their impressive debut DIRTY SEXY KNIGHTS IN PARIS, Audiovent avoids merely cranking up the distortion and instead keeps a steady hand on producing well-crafted hard rock songs. Between drawing from early-'90s grunge influences and working with Goo Goo Dolls producer Gavin McKillop, this California quartet does a fine job of appropriating the loud-soft-loud method of composition; see the sitar-tinged "Rain" and the hard-hitting "Beautiful Addiction," with its subtle, dream-pop guitar. Able to play as loud and hard as any of their contemporaries, Audiovent truly shine on songs falling outside of the aggro-rock box. Most notable are the sweet pop of "Sweet Frustration" with its mostly acoustic sound, and "When I Drown," a piano-driven cut featuring Einziger and drummer Jamin Wilcox on vocals surrounded by light string arrangements. DIRTY SEXY KNIGHTS IN PARIS succeeds in presenting a different side of aggro-rock by a group that's more than Incubus' baby- brother band. SKU: 1075427

Marquee Moon (Remastered & Expanded)
Television: Tom Verlaine (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Richard Lloyd (guitar, background vocals); Fred Smith (bass, background vocals); Billy Ficca (drums). Recorded at A & R Studios, New York, New York. Originally released on Elektra (1098). Includes liner notes by Alan Licht. New York's 1970s punk was markedly different to that of Britain. Rather than reject the past, American groups deconstructed its forms and rebuilt them with recourse to the music's strengths. Television's leader, Tom Verlaine, professed admiration for Moby Grape and the folk rock of early Fairport Convention. Elements of the latter appear on this album's title track, which offers a thrillinginstrumental break, built upon a modal scale. Verlaine's shimmering guitar style provides the set's focus, but his angular compositions are always enthralling. A sense of brooding mystery envelops the proceedings, and Marquee Moon retains its standing as one of the era's pivotal releases. SKU: 1087328

Criss Cross
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Charles Rouse (tenor saxophone); John Ore (bass); Frankie Dunlop (drums). Producer: Teo Macero. Reissue producer: John Snyder. Recorded in New York, New York between November 6, 1962 and March 29, 1963. Includes liner notes by John Swenson. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony MusicStudios, New York, New York). This is part of the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces series. CRISS-CROSS is the result of five sessions with the ever-present Charlie Rouse on tenor plus the rhythm compliment of drummer Frankie Dunlop and bassist John Ore. It was recorded at a time when Monk had actually become a popular beat icon; his iconoclast mug appeared on the cover of Time barely a year later. While the majority of the material here is Monk's, his whimsical way with the two standards, "Tea For Two" and "Don't Blame Me," makes them special treats. The former is like an old suitcase bursting at the seams with zany new toys, the melody rife with Monk's truncated chromatic tails, his solo chunky with erratic-sounding bass comping, all of it amusingly bookended by the tongue-in-cheek straightness of Ore's intro and Monk's final toy-piano notes. By contrast, Rouse stays true to the compartmentalized quality of the head on "Criss-Cross," blowing short, dense strands that sound like the flight path of a beatnik butterfly as Dunlop responds sympathetically, all the while maintaining a solidly swinging base. CRISS-CROSS is choice Monk finery. SKU: 1078057

Uberjam
John Scofield Band: John Scofield (electric guitar); Avi Bortnick (acoustic & electric guitars, samples); Jesse Murphy (bass); Adam Deitch (drums). Additional personnel: Karl Denson (saxophone, flute); John Medeski (Clavinet, Hammond B-3 organ, Mellotron). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York between July & September 2001. UBERJAM was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. With the ascendancy of acid jazz and jam bands in the early '90s, funky jazz guitarist John Scofield suddenly found himself curiously in vogue for his blend of fusion and funk. The band Scofield presents on UBERJAM is the one that's accompanied him at many a jam-friendly festival, and even the guest artists (saxman Karl Denson, keyboardist John Medeski) hail from that scene. These facts, along withthe album's title, seem to suggest Scofield fully embracing his jam-god role, and why not? Improvisation is what jazz is all about anyway. As one would expect, nearly every tune here is driven by a hard-grooving funk rhythm courtesy of Jesse Murphy's kinetic bass and Adam Deitch's deep-pocket drums. Of course, there are variations; "Jungle Fiction" finds Scofield ringing changes over a contemporary "jungle" beat, and the more laid-back, acoustic-tinged "Tomorrow Land" is the closest thing to a jazz tune. Still, it's a thrill to hear a gifted guitarist like Scofield giving his talents free reign over a percolating backbeat full of funk, R&B, and hip-hop flavoring. SKU: 1069035

Rei Momo
Personnel includes: David Byrne (vocals, guitar); Lewis Kahn (violin); Jose Gallegos (keyboards); Sergio Brindao (bass); Milton Cardona (congas); Kirsty MacColl (background vocals). Recorded in May & July, 1989. David Byrne's first release after the breakup of the Talking Heads is not only a logical progression from their final album, NAKED, it's his first truly pop-oriented solo work. (THE CATHERINE WHEEL wasa dance score, and MUSIC FROM THE KNEE PLAYS a collaboration with avant-garde composer Robert Wilson based on New Orleans second-line music.) Built on his recent fondness for Latin and Afro-Cuban musical styles (Byrne founded the Brazilophilic Luaka Bop label around this time as well), REI MOMO is half music lesson--the liner notes explain which songs are sambas, cumbias, etc.--and half late-period Talking Heads album. The combination works surprisingly well, with the highlight being the witty "Make Believe Mambo," co-starring Kirsty MacColl, who would later make her own album of Latinate pop, 2000's TROPICAL BRAINSTORM. This track and others sound so much like tunes from NAKED that clearly Byrne simply didn't need the Heads anymore. SKU: 1006877

Sugar Ray
Sugar Ray: Mark McGrath (vocals); Rodney Sheppard (guitar); Murphy Karges (bass); Stanton Frazier (drums); DJ Homicide (turntables). Additional personnel: Nick Hexum (vocals); William Francis, David Holdredge (guitar); Jaydee Madness (pedal steel guitar); John "Juke" Logan (harmonica); Emmanuel Dean, Greg Kurstin (keyboards); David Khane (programming). Producers: Don Gilmore, David Kahne, Ralph Sall. Engineers include: Don Gilmore, John Ewing, Jr., Eddie Miller. Recorded at NRG Studios, North Hollywood, California, Scream Studios, Studio City, California, Jim Henson Studios and SoundCastle Recording, Los Angeles, California. Without a trace of irony, Sugar Ray name-checks Culture Club, Men Without Hats and KROQ's Rock Of The Eighties, alongside The Clash and Run-D.M.C. on "Under The Sun," a bewitching track ontheir eponymous fourth album. The shameless shout-outs aptly sum up the mood on SUGAR RAY, the 2001 release from the Cali-skater punks turned wistful pop stars via a string of late-'90s megahits such as "Fly" and "Every Morning." An endearingly unabashed allegiance to the pop hooks of that decade abounds, tempered by just a splash of punk attitude in Mark McGrath's scratchy yet melodic vocals and a touch of hip-hop bounce in DJ Hurricane's adroit spinning. While Sugar Ray may have to constantly elude being tarred as featherweight, it's no bother as their brand of light and breezy pop is unreservedly appealing. Amidst the chaos the world dishes out, there's always room for sing-along pop songs like the lush "When It's Over, " the bordering-on-brash "Satellites," and the silly yet subtly funky "Ours." Sugar Ray are that old blanket, undeniably familiar yet providing sweet comfort within the folds of their well-crafted music. SKU: 1062081

Everything I Own
Includes liner notes by Stephen Nye. EVERYTHING I OWN is an excellent compact overview of Ken Boothe's hits. From his early success as a member of the ska duo Stranger & Ken and as a solo artist riding the changing fashions of rocksteadyand reggae, Boothe's beautiful tenor and sophisticated vocal stylings never wavered in quality. Along with Alton Ellis, Boothe was Jamaica's preeminent soulster, and remained one of the country's most popular and consistent stars throughout the 1960s and '70s. Boothe was heavily influenced by American soul and R&B, and his own sound reflects the innovations of Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, and Wilson Pickett. Boothe drew from American songs for much of his own repertoire, too, and had hits with Gaye's "Let's Get It On," the Four Tops' "(That's the Way) Nature Planned It," and Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine." But Boothe's own compositions played into his success as well, including the ska-inflected "Freedom Street" and the funky "You're No Good," the artist's first solo single. Later '70s hits like the romantic "Crying Over You" and Bread's "Everything I Own" hearken back to Boothe's rocksteady sound, and round out this very well chosen anthology. SKU: 1084638

Last Days Of Disco
Soundtrack disco and70's hits compilations are all too common these days. But that fact doesn't make this thoughtfully chosen collection from the height of the disco era any less welcome. On one level, the solid programming makes for a unusually strong dance set, perfect for your very own private disco party. But, like Whit Stillman's new film, the overall impression left hearing these major hits one after another is one of poignancy, a feeling which is only partly nostalgic. The deeper reason is that all the great disco anthems - of which this soundtrack boasts a few - had their sadness built in. Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, master producers of the bittersweet dance track, are represented with four cuts, including the magnificent "Good Times." Female voices predominate though, the most winning being Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Shame" and "I Don't Know If It's Right." There is occasional commentary from the male species as well, a long randy number called "Got To Have Loving" by Don Ray and a soul throwback, Brenton Wood's "The Oogum Boogum Song." It's still ladies' night however and the set winds up with a worthy remake of Alicia Bridge's "I Love The Nightlife" by India and Nuyorican Soul. SKU: 1005952

In The Jungle Groove [Remastered]
Personnel: James Brown, Bobby Byrd (vocals, organ); Jimmy "Chank" Nolen, Alphonso "Country" Kellum, Phelps "Catfish" Collins, Hearlon "Cheese" Martin, Robert Coleman, Bobby Roach (guitar); Jimmy Parker (alto saxophone); Maceo Parker, L.D. "Eldee" Williams, Robert McCulloch (tenor saxophone); St. Clair Pinckney, Louis Tifford (baritone saxophone); Richard "Kush" Griffeth, Joe Davis, Darryl "Hasaan" Jamison, Clayton "Chicken" Gunnels, Jerone "Jasaan" Melson (trumpet); Fred Wesley (trombone); "Sweet Charles" Sherrell, William "Bootsy" Collins, Fred Thomas (bass); Melvin Parker, Charles Stubblefield, John "Jabo" Starks (drums); John Morgan, Art Lopez, Johnny Griggs (congas). Principally recorded at King Studios, Cincinnati, Ohio; Criteria, Miami, Florida; Bobby Smith Studios, Macon, Georgia; A & R Studios, New York, New York between 1969 & 1972. Includes liner notes by Cliff White. IN THE JUNGLE GROOVE documents one of the most important periods in the development of James Brown's music. In 1970, Brown's bandleader/sax player Maceo Parker departed to form his own band, taking much of Brown's group with him. This event heralded the arrival of the JB's, which included monster bassist Bootsy Collins, whose hyperkinetic style made Brown's funk harder, leaner, and meaner. This album gives listeners a bird's-eye view of the change, featuring the final sessions of the Maceo-led band as well as the first recordings of Bootsy and the JB's. Maceo and company were at their hardest and funkiest at this point, as seen on "The Funky Drummer," where Clyde Stubblefield lays down the drum break that would launch a thousand hip-hop samples. Stubblefield stuck around long enough to be part of the first JB's, whose tracks here arefull of frenetic, barely controlled energy. The sense of joy and revelation in the groove is audible in these orgasmically polyrhythmic sessions. Collins and Stubblefield lay down some of the heaviest grooves in the history of recorded music. As Brown himself observes on the aforementioned Maceo-era "Funky Drummer," "it's a mutha!" SKU: 1084979
