Reptile
Personnel includes: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Doyle Bramhall II (guitar, dobro); Andy Fairweather Low (guitar); Billy Preston (harmonica, piano, organ); Joe Sample (piano, electric piano, organ); Tim Carmon (piano, organ, synthesizer); Paul Carrack (keyboards); Nathan East, Pino Paladino (bass); Steve Gadd (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Paul Waller (programming); The Impressions (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Eric Clapton. "Reptile" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. During the recording of the follow-up to his Grammy-winning collaboration with B.B. King, Eric Clapton's uncle passed away. This loss, coupled with Clapton's struggle to get on a creative track, led to REPTILE, a reflective album driven by a number of impressive stylistic turns. Starting with the gorgeous, samba-inspired instrumental title track, ("reptile" is apparently a term of endearment from Clapton's childhood), the man formerly known as God puts his personal stamp on a number of covers while contributing a handful of stellar originals. Among the artists getting the Slowhand treatment are old standby J.J. Cale (a chugging "Travelin' Light"), James Taylor (a simmering "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight"), and Big Joe Turner (the loping "Got You on My Mind"). Special guests the Impressions lend a gospel-flavored sheen to a slow-burning version of Ray Charles' "Come Back Baby," while adding a Jordanaires-like presence to a country-flavored take on StevieWonder's "I Ain't Gonna Stand for It." Clapton's self-penned cuts are also impressive, ranging from the low-key Brazilian-flavored "Believe in Life," to the poignant acoustic instrumental closer "Son & Sylvia," dedicated to the guitarist's late uncle and his wife. Peace Sells...But Who's Buying (Remastered & Expanded/Parental Advisory) [PA]
Megadeth: Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar); Chris Poland (guitar); David Ellefson (bass guitar, background vocals); Gar Samuelson (drums). Recording information: The Music Grinder, Los Angeles, California. Guitarist Dave Mustaine was an original member of thrash-pioneers Metallica. But he was booted from the band during the recording of that band's debut album, KILL 'EM ALL. Instead of moping around, Mustaine returned to California and immediately formed another group--Megadeth. He promised his fans that the new outfit would be faster and more lethal than his former band, and Megadeth's 1985 debut, KILLING IS MY BUSINESS, AND BUSINESS IS GOOD, made good on this threat. Megadeth and Metallica duked it out in the music press, but both acts thrived. In 1986, each released its finest record, Metallica's MASTEROF PUPPETS and Megadeth's PEACE SELLS...BUT WHO'S BUYING While Metallica initially shunned MTV, Megadeth used the video format to its advantage--becoming the first thrash band to do so. Both "Wake Up Dead" and the anthemic title track received constant play on MTV's HEAVY METAL HOUR; the latter song's brief bass intro was even used as the theme to MTV news in the early-'90s. Tracks such as "The Conjuring," "Devil's Island," "Good Mourning/Black Friday," and a cover of Jeff Beck's "I Ain't Superstitious" proved to be just as brutal. PEACE SELLS is an influential, all-time heavy metal classic. SKU: 6569130

Live
Personnel includes: David Johansen (vocals); Johnny Thunders (guitar). Recorded live at the Bottom Line, New York, New York on July 21, 1978. Before his stylistic diversions as tuxedoed nightclub crooner Buster Poindexter and leader of the folky David Johansen and the Harry Smiths, David Johansen consistently delivered a special brand of trashy rock & roll fun that worked best on stage. LIVE is a good example. Like the earlier LIVE IT UP, the18 tracks on LIVE are a giddy mix of solo Johansen tracks ("Funky but Chic," "Frenchette," "Babylon"), a soca-styled number that sounds like a warm-up for the Buster Poindexter days, and New York Dolls classics. "Personality Crisis" gets interrupted for a brief version of "It's a Heartache" and "Looking for a Kiss." LIVE also offers typically rowdy covers of such rock & roll gems as "Build Me Up Buttercup" and "Reach Out (I'll Be There)," and an intense reading of Sandie Shaw's "Girl Don't Come." SKU: 6549579

Best Of Thelonious Monk, The
Personnel include: Thelonious Monk (piano); Gigi Gryce (alto saxophone); Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone); Thad Jones (cornet); Max Roach, Art Blakey (drums). Liner Note Author: Chip Stern. Recording information: Reeves Sound Studio, New York, New York (1955 - 1960); Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey. A truly distinctive performer in both his musical style and his personality, Thelonious Monk is inarguably the most important pianist/composer in post-bop jazz. Although Monk's late-1940s and early-'50s recordings for Blue Note display his bebop roots, they also reveal his own utterly unique musical vocabulary, which he expanded upon during his revered mid-to-late-1950s sessions for Riverside Records. This collection presents a handful of tracks from these revered Riverside albums, including a playful 1957 solo version of his classic "'Round Midnight," which highlights Monk's percussive piano technique. Other tracks on THE BEST OF THELONIOUS MONK feature anumber of jazz greats, particularly the stellar lineup that includes drummer Art Blakey and saxophonists John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins on the bouncy "Off Minor" and the swinging "Well, You Needn't," both from '57's MONK'S MUSIC. Boasting crisp, remastered sound, this 2004 compilation is an ideal introduction to Monk's peak years. SKU: 6582614

Best Of Rod Stewart Vol.2, The [Remastered]
Cassette available on Mercury (822 791). Producers: Lou Reizner, Rod Stewart. When The Jeff Beck Group broke up, Rod Stewart and Ron Wood joined the Faces. Simultaneously, Rod had been signed as a solo artist and he managed to juggle both careers over the next six years. Stewart became a superstar on the strength of EVERYPICTURE TELLS A STORY and NEVER A DULL MOMENT. His exemplary execution of non-originals gave him numerous hits including Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe," The Tempations' "I'm Losing You" and Jimi Hendrix's "Angel." His own classics included the irresistible chart-topping "Maggie May" and "You Wear It Well." The high spots of his 70's output included "Sailing," "The Killing Of Georgie," Cat Stevens' "The First Cut Is The Deepest," "Tonight's The Night" and "You're In My Heart." Other hits included "Hot Legs" and the irresistible number 1, "D'Ya Think I'm Sexy." Behind the jack-the-lad persona was an artist who still had a good ear for a quality song, a talent which surfaced throughout the decade with numbers like Paul Carrack's "How Long" and Robert Palmer's "Some Guys Have All The Luck." His biggest hits of the '80s were "What Am I Gonna Do," "Every Beat Of My Heart" and his best of the decade, "Baby Jane." THE BEST OF ROD STEWART VOLUME 2 includes material from Rod Stewart's stint on Mercury Records that lasted from 1969-1974. SKU: 1073488

Live And Kickin'
Personnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Ray Charles, Kenny Chesney, Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, Norah Jones, Toby Keith, Diana Krall, Lyle Lovett, Shelby Lynne, John Mellencamp, Ray Price, Leon Russell, Paul Simon, Shania Twain, Steven Tyler, ZZ Top (vocals); Biff Watson (acoustic & electric guitars); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Wyclef Jean, Andy York (guitar); Dan Dugmore (steel guitar); Miriam Sturn (violin); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); John Hobbsm, Matt Rollings, Robert Aaron (keyboards); Michael Rhodes, Jerry Duplessif (bass); Kenny Aronoff, Donald Guillaume, Dane Clark (drums); Shannon Forrest (percussion); Julia Waters, Maxine Waters, Corky Churke (background vocals). Recorded live at The Beacon Theatre, New York, New York on April 9, 2003. For his 70th birthday gala, Willie Nelson decided to celebrate by inviting a cast of musical stars to join him in duets on a televised concert. In keeping with Willie's eclecticism, only a few ofthe famous participants (Shania Twain,Toby Keith, old pal Ray Price) are country artists. How much is added to Nelson's classic "Crazy" by guests Diana Krall and Elvis Costello (hot celeb couple of the moment) is an open question; what's really important is the well deserved recognition Nelson receives from the musical world's biggest names. If you're a hardcore Willie fan, you've probably already got a couple of earlier live versions of, for example, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," but part of LIVE AND KICKIN's purpose is to expose fans of Nelson's duet partners to the magic they've been missing out on for many decades. Terroir Blues
Personnel: Jay Farrar (vocals, acoustic guitar); Mark Spencer (vocals, electric guitar, lap steel guitar, piano); Brian Henneman (electric slide guitar); Eric Heywood (pedal steel guitar); Janice Rieman (cello); Lew Winer III (flute); John Horton (bass); Jon Wurster (drums, percussion). On his second solo album, former Uncle Tupelo member and Son Volt frontman Jay Farrar continues to paint outside the worn areas of his musical canvas. The most prominent examples of Farrar's ongoing sonic experimentation are the six interspersed "Space Junk" instrumentals, which feature brief backward tape loops. However, Farrar still leaves plenty ofroom to hone his signature dirt-road sound, leaning further towards minimalism and atmospherics on this set of songs. "No Turning Back" begins with Farrar's immediately recognizable acoustic strumming and plaintive vocals, which are joined by off-in-the-distance pedal steel guitar and clanging, muffled drums. "Hard Is the Fall" hearkens back to the late Tupelo/early Son Volt era, while "Fool King's Crown" is a distorted, bluesy shuffle. Though many of these tunes have a quirky, ramshackle quality about them, Farrar offers more straightforward alternate versions of four songs, fully showcasing his range as an accomplished and creative singer/songwriter. Good Morning Blues
Includes liner notes by Les Fancourt. The 20 tracks on GOOD MORNING BLUES mostly date from the relatively early days of Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter's professional career, after the mid-'30s Library of Congress recordings that made his name. Though he's been primarily thought of as a blues player, Leadbelly from the beginning fused acoustic Delta blues with traditional folk music, jazz, and then-current pop, creating something entirely unique in the process. Besides the well-known title track, GOOD MORNING BLUES features such Leadbelly standouts as his hit "GoodnightIrene," the trad-folk "Gallis Pole," the guitar showcase "Rock Island Line," and the pointedly political anti-racist "Bourgeois Blues." There are many multi-volume Leadbelly retrospectives, but for a good one-disc introduction to one of the 20th century's most unique artists, GOOD MORNING BLUES is tough to beat. SKU: 4123257

Starsailor: James Walsh, James Stelfox, Ben Bryne, Barry Westhead. Despite their enormous success in their native England and their inroads into the US market, Starsailor defies expectations at every turn. While the group takes its name from one of Tim Buckley's most experimental albums, there's nothing remotely Buckley-like or experimental about their sound. And though the quartet is often lumped in with Britpoppers, they share neither the laddish anthems and Beatles obsessions of Oasis nor the friendly pop sensibilities of Travis and Coldplay. Instead, Starsailor offers a moody brand of folk-rock that brings late-period Cat Stevens to mind more than any of the band's contemporaries. With a chiming, organic mix of electric and acoustic guitars and '70s-sounding keyboards, LOVEIS HERE takes the listener through an often angst-ridden series of emotional extremes while never becoming too sonically taxing. East Bay Grease
Tower Of Power: Rufus Miller, Rick Stevens (vocals); Willy Fulton (guitar, background vocals); Skip Mesquite (flute, tenor saxophone, background vocals); Emilio "Mimi" Castillo (alto saxophone, background vocals); Steve Kupka (baritone saxophone, background vocals); Greg Adams, David Padron (trumpet); Frank Prestia (bass); DaveGaribaldi (vibraphone, drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Mic Gillette (trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn); Ken Balzell (trumpet). Recorded at Mercury Recording Studios, San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by David Perry. With the release of their first album EAST BAY GREASE, Tower Of Power announced to the world that the funk was here to stay. Their tightly syncopated soul, generated by original rhythm teammates David Garibaldi and Francis Rocco Prestia and punctuated by the world-famous Tower Of Power horns set in motion a revolution of '70s funk that carried on the traditions of James Brown. Released in 1970, GREASE would serve as the blueprint for the band's unyielding style that would continue virtually unchanged for the next three decades. Original members like founders Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka, Greg Adams, Skip Mesquite, and vocalist Rufus Miller defined the Oakland soul sound that produced lasting favorites like "Knock Yourself Out," "Social Lubrication," and "Sparkling In the Sand." After this initial splash, TOP would go on to international fame, delivering their message of the funk to the world for years to come. SKU: 5060026

Road To Ruin (Remastered And Expanded)
The Ramones: Joey Ramone(vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass, background vocals); Marky Ramone (drums). Producers: T. Erdelyi, Ed Stasium. Reissue producers: Bill Inglot, Gary Stewart. Engineers: T. Erdelyi, Ed Stasium. Principally recorded at Media Sound, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Legs McNeil and Arturo Vega. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot (Digiprep Studios). The last installment of the Ramones' breathtaking run of four albums in two years, the underrated ROAD TO RUIN shows that the group's follow-up, the Phil Spector-produced END OF THE CENTURY, was not as huge a change of direction as it's often made out to be. Compared to the fairly primitive RAMONES and LEAVE HOME, ROCKET TO RUSSIA had sounded almost slick, and ROAD TO RUIN goes it one better. Tom Erdelyi remains as co-producer, but his new partner Ed Stasium reveals a gift for balancing hard-candy gloss, bubble-gum hooks and noisy punk passion; similarly, Erdelyi's replacement on the drums, former glam-rocker Marc Bell, adds both power and finesse. The high points--particularly the uncharacteristically emotional love song "Questioningly" and the immortal rocker "I Wanna Be Sedated"--are excellent, and ROAD TO RUIN is a fitting conclusion to the Ramones' first and best era. The bonus tracks on the 2001 Rhino reissue include two early, Stasium-produced versions of "I Want You Around" and "Rock and Roll High School," along with the raucous 11-minute live medley that's the climax of the film of the same name, and a pair of previously unreleased demos. Waterhouse Revisited Vol.2
Personnel: Eric Alexander (tenor saxophone); JimRotondi (trumpet); Charles Earland (Hammond B-3 organ); Peter Bernstein (guitar); Joe Farnsworth (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on May 8, 1997. Includes liner notes by Larry Hollis. The title might seem arrogant, but Eric Alexander doesn't presume to be anything more than he is--a very talented tenor player at the top of his game. The saxophonist here expertly demonstrates his abilities, along with those of his former boss, organist Charles Earland, and his longtime associates Jim Rotondi, Joe Farnsworth, and Peter Bernstein. Alexander continues to prove both muscular and agile, sporting a robust, tastefully lyrical tone, while also occasionally summoning passages of explosive energy. The session holds many refreshing surprises, most notable being the lack of hackneyed standards, save for a very relaxed read of the classic "God Bless The Child." In addition, two rearranged contemporary pop tunes appear in the form of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," featuring an indomitable mid-tempo snap, and Chaka Khan's hit "Through the Fire," which here becomes a funky little bossa nova. In addition, Alexander's "Burner's Waltz" and the fiery "Explosion" offer ample opportunity for the quintet to stretch out. Other impressive tracks include a tasteful swing through Fletcher Henderson's "Soft Winds" and Bernstein's soulful funk groove "Carrot Cake." SKU: 6541733
