When Disaster Strikes [PA]
Personnel: Busta Rhymes, Lord Have Mercy, Dolomite A/K/A Rudy Ray Moore, Spliff Star, Rah Digga, Fabulous Fab, Jamal, Rampage, Baby Sham, Webb Welch, Rachelle Weston (vocals); Anthony Hamilton, The Chosen Generation, Mase, Serious, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Erykah Badu, The Flipmode Squad, D.J. Scratch. Producers: Omar Glover, D.J. Scratch, The Ummah, Busta Rhymes, Shamello, Buddah, Rashad Smith, Easy Moe Bee, 8-Off, Rockwilder, Sean "Pufffy" Combs, Pete L. Engineers: Vinny Nicoletti, Tom Passetti, Mike Ifversen, Tony Maserati, Ben Arrindell. Recorded at Sound Techniques, Boston, Massachusetts; Sound Track Studios and Daddy's House Studios, New York, New York. "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. "Dangerous" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. Busta Rhymes is hip-hop's wildest, most energetic MC. As a lyricist, he is not afraid to experiment, and his creativity is such that he comes across not just as a rapper, but as a performer. His second solo album WHEN DISASTER STRIKES adds to a long resume, which includes his work with Leaders Of The New School, cameos on some of hip hop's hottest remixes (Craig Mack's "Flava In Ya Ear" and A Tribe Called Quest's "Scenario"), and even movie credits for HIGHER LEARNING. The first single, "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" is Busta at his best, with production suited for the dance floor. Other tracks show Busta's versatility; "Dangerous" is an off-beat rhyme, which incorporates a sample from an old commercial ("This is serious/we canmake you delirious"), and "One" links Busta with Erykah Badu for a smooth, jazzy feel. Throughout the years, Busta has kept up with the times, and even WHEN DISASTER STRIKES, Busta Rhymes will still be standing. SKU: 1014526

In Love And Death (Parental Advisory) [PA]
The Used: Quinn Allman (vocals, guitar, toys); Bert McCracken (vocals, piano, keyboards); Jeph Howard (vocals, bass instrument); Branden Steineckert (vocals, drums, percussion). Recording information: Foxy Studios, Los Angeles, California. With 2004's IN LOVE AND DEATH, emo icons the Used go to the next level in polishing up their production without losing any of the raw emotion that's defined their work. For their second studio album, the Utah quartet taps into the same degree of angst, but with the perspective of people who've been immersed in a world gilded by fame and success. "Light with a Sharpened Edge" and "Take It Away" reverberate with desperation amid waves of pile-driving riffs and singer Bert McCracken's howl. Still, there's no doubt that the Used have embraced more of a pop approach, be it the eminently catchy "I Caught Fire," with its uber-hooks and choruses, or theloping "Cut Up Angels," which is one Joe Perry guitar solo away from being a late-era Aerosmith outtake. Most impressive is the Used's stylistic risk-taking (glockenspiel and soothing vocals on the lo-fi "Yesterday's Feelings," the Burt Bacharach-meets-the Cure oddity "Lunacy Fringe," complete with strings and brushed drums). On IN LOVE AND DEATH, the Used succeeds in adding yet another twist to the emo aesthetic. SKU: 6572038

Jazz Masters
Personnel includes: Cannonball Adderly (alto saxophone); Richard Hayman, Bill Russo (conductor); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Jerome Richardson (tenor saxophone, flute); Cecil Payne (baritone saxophone); Nat Adderley, Ernie Royal (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland, J.J. Johnson (trombone); Junior Mance, John Williams, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans (piano); Sam Jones, Paul Chambers, Keter Betts, Milt Hinton (bass); Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Clarke (drums). Producer: Bob Shad. Compilation producer: Michael Lang. Recorded between 1955 and 1959. Includes liner notes by Joe Goldberg. Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Polygram Studios). This is part of the Verve Jazz Masters series. Julian "Cannonball" Adderley didn't spend long at Verve Records, but his releases there, highlighted by the outstanding JULIAN CANNONBALL ADDERLEY AND STRINGS and JUMP FOR JOY albums, are among his very best. This compilation covers the highlights of Adderley's tenure with Verve, focusing on lush versions of such standards as "What's New," "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home to," and "The Way You Look Tonight." The alto saxophonist had a remarkable facility for ballads, and his versions of these classics are among the best. Elsewhere, Adderley pulls off a sassy take on Duke Ellington's "I Got it Bad (and that Ain't Good)" and a staggeringly complex reading of Thelonious Monk's bop workout "Straight, No Chaser." Adderley's originals more than hold their own insuch exalted company. True fans will want the albums themselves, but this compilation is a wonderful introduction. SKU: 1011605

Going For The One
Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals); Steve Howe (guitar, vocals); Rick Wakeman (keyboards); Chris Squire (bass, vocals); Alan White (drums, vocals). Recorded at Mountain Studios, Montreux, Switzerland. All tracks have been digitally remastered. It seemed very strange to see aYes album without Roger Dean's colourful, ipsy-dipsy land of fantasy on the cover. The replacement is a concrete jungle of grey skyscrapers, but do not fear, the music is still the same. The reassuring chorus on the title track and Howe's beautiful acoustic guitar on "Turn Of The Century" comfort the listener that some things never change. After a gap of three years, the Yes boys refused to say no and came back with one of the best albums of their lengthy career. SKU: 3102361

Siren
Personnel includes: Heather Nova (vocals, acoustic guitar, violin); Nikolaj Juel (guitar, Moog synthesizer, Fender Rhodes); Neil Taylor, David Ayers, Youth (guitar); Hawaiian lap guitar, piano, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer, Mellotron, tamboura); Felix Tod (koto, harmonitor, programming); Paul Sandrone, Marcus Cliffe (bass); Geoff Dugmore (drums); Danny Cummings, Satin Singh (percussion); Jason Mayo (programming); John Moore (saw); Nadia Lanman. Engineers: Andrew Scarth, Ben Finlay, Hugo Nicholson. Boasting big, bold pop production that suggests the anthemic-but-personable sound of Natalie Imbruglia, SIREN bursts out of the speakers with a giddyrush of emotion. Heather Nova's not one to wail stridently like some Alanis-come-lately; instead she favors a breathy, delicate style that's nevertheless strong enough to ride comfortably atop the layers of acoustic and electric guitars that coat this frothy pop product. In fact, it's Nova's own guitar that's at the heart of most of the arrangements here. Throughout SIREN, Nova utilizing an intriguing catch in her voice that brings to mind Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries. Ultimately it's Nova's very unique vocal style and winning pop sensibilities that make SIREN work as well as it does, doing double duty as substantive singer-songwriter statement and perfect pop radio fodder. Word Of Mouth [Digipak] [Remastered]
WORD OF MOUTH was Jaco Pastorius' the first solo group recording, and it does a good deal to substantiate the widelyheld claims concerning the bassist's genius and wizardry. As a technician, Pastorius was untouchable, and his radical, melodic approach (he seems to play both rhythm and lead at once) forced a generation of bassists to reconceptualize their relationship to the instrument. Pastorius' skills are on full display on this recording, as shown by the first cut, "Crisis," which lives up to the feeling of its title as a mind boggling, rapid-fire bass line tears through a tapestry of fragmentary instrumental sounds. The pieces that follow are stylistically varied and hop from Bach ("Chromatic Fantasy"), to the Beatles ("Blackbird"), to revisited swing ("Liberty City"). While the orchestrations toward the end of the album get somewhat heavy-handed, Pastorius' fluid agility and the contributions of top-drawer players such as Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette and harmonica player Toots Thielmans make WORD OF MOUTH a must for fusion fans. Twelve Deadly Cyns - And Then Some
Full title: Twelve Deadly Cyns...And Then Some. TWELVE DEADLY CYNS...AND THEN SOME is a greatest-hits record with three new tracks. Personnel includes: Cyndi Lauper (vocals, dulcimer, recorder); Rob Hyman (vocals, melodica, keyboards, synthesizer); Eric Bazilian (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, violin, melodica, saxophone, bass, background vocals); William Wittman, John McCurry, Robert Holmes, Felicia Collins, Rob Bailey (guitar); Charlie Giordano (accordion, keyboards); Jeff Bova (keyboards, synthesizer); Joey Moskowitz (keyboards, programming); Will Lee, Bakithi Kumalo (bass); Anton Fig, Steve Ferrone (drums); Ellie Greenwich, Krystal Davis, Dianne Wilson (background vocals); Nile Rodgers, Jules Shear, The Bangles, Paul Shaffer, Adrian Belew. Producers include: Cyndi Lauper, William Wittman, Rick Chertoff, Lennie Petze, Junior Vasquez. Engineers include: William Wittman, Brian McGee, Eric Thorngren. Think of her as a novelty if you want--with her squeaky-voiced, New Yawk accent, her flame-colored hair and her pals in the World Wrestling Federation--but realize that she was one of the most distinguished pop singers of her time. Between 1983 and 1986 Cyndi Lauper had seven top-10 singles and she had range. There were cheeky anthems to girldom ("Girls Just Want To Have Fun," "She Bop"), there were timeless ballads ("Time After Time" and "True Colors," her two well-deserved number ones), and there was real rock jangle ("Money Changes Everything"). That New Yawk soprano managed to carry both impudence and compassion, and found in some songs what even the songwriters could not. Lauper's "All Through The Night" is a grand pop melody that Jules Shear's original version barely suggested, and her take on "Money Changes Everything" is a power-pop epic with a wave of synthesizer and electric guitar that drowns the original by the Brains. TWELVE DEADLY CYNS, which features eleven hits and album tracks, a soul-reggae remake of "Girls Just Want To Have Fun," and two other new songs, continues the story post-1986 and finds much of the distinction gone but the pop sensibility still strong. 1989's "I Drove All Night" is a neat Roy Orbison homage; "Sally's Pigeons," a 1993 writing collaboration with Mary-Chapin Carpenter, is an unlikely flirtation with singer-songwriter-dom; and the previously unreleased "I'm Gonna Be Strong" is a dramatic stab at an old Gene Pitney ballad. They're not so much pop singles as they are musings of anorange-haired cabaret singer. SKU: 1007004

Outta Here
The Gories includes: Peggy O'Neil (drums); Mick, Dan. If it's possible to be at once retro and ahead of one's time, then the Gories achieved that ironic combination. Perhaps their chaotic and intentionally low-fi take on '60s city blues and surf-rock would have fared far better in thewake of such successful acts as the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Luckily, the band cut three fine albums before disbanding. OUTTA HERE, the last of the Gories' trio of albums, displays the Detroit threesome's ability to add their special touch to surf standards and Lieber and Stoller tunes with equal dexterity. The gospel-influenced "There But For the Grace of God Go I" and the disjointed lead guitar of "Ichiban" display the Gories' ability to cull from various genres and fit them together into their own mold. Controversy
Personnelincludes: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Lisa Coleman (keyboards, background vocals); Dr. Fink (keyboards); Bobby Z (drums). Engineers: Mic Guzanski, Ross Pallone, Bob Mockler. CONTROVERSY is the fourth release from Prince, and it continues in the tradition of his debut DIRTY MIND, with funky rhythms, throbbing electronic accents and titillating lyrics. Featuring the successful title cut and the club hit "Private Joy," CONTROVERSY works off Prince's infamous juxtaposition of sex and religion. This is explicitly depicted in songs such as "Annie Christian" and the sultry ballad "Do Me, Baby" where during a long instrumental sequence, his sighs blatantly indicate carnal activity. As with many of his recordings, Prince maintains complete creative control here by handling all the writing, playing and production himself. SKU: 1005411

Battlecry Under A Winter Sun
Debut album from Canadian former hardcore kids who decided that irony-free sword and sorcery metal with titles like 'Destroy The Orcs' was a lotmore fun. Hootie And The Blowfish
Hootie & The Blowfish: Darius Rucker (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Mark Bryan (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, background vocals); Jim "Soni" Sonefeld (acoustic guitar, drums, percussion, loops); Dean Felber (bass, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Don Was (trumpet, Fender Rhodes piano); Susan Cowsill, Vicki Peterson background vocals). Recorded at Beacon Street, Venice, California and Bogart Studios, Miami, Florida. For their first album since 1998's MUSICAL CHAIRS, Hootie and the Blowfish enlisted the aid of production doctor Don Was in an effort to get back on track after a four-year layoff that found Darius Rucker and Mark Bryan releasing their own solo efforts. Sounding refreshed and recharged, thisroots-rock quartet hit the ground running, mixing in the twangy country-rock of "Little Darlin'," soaring "When She's Gone" (featuring background vocals by Indigo Girl Emily Saliers), and catchy mid-tempo rocker "Space." Rucker's exploration of R&B roots on his solo outing BACK TO THEN made for a ripple effect that can be heard on songs like the pleading power ballad "I'll Come Runnin'" and soulful "Little Brother," with its hearty harmonies and Was's snappy organ contributions. The boys even manage to sneak in a sweet cover of the Continental Drifters' "The Rain Song" complete with harmonies by Drifters Vicki Peterson and Susan Cowsill, that serves as the bow on this package of solid roots-rock. J.C. Heard (drums); Producers include: John Hammond, Bernie Hanighen. Compilation producers: Michael Brooks, Michael Cuscana. Recorded between 1935 and 1942. Includes liner notes by Gary Giddins. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder & Seth Foster (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). One of the top three female jazz singers in history, Billie Holiday (along with Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan) changed not only the course of jazz but the very shape of pop culture. On this 2001 Columbia two-CD collection, we hear Holiday in her early years. These indelible recordings, backed by legends in their own right, Teddy Wilson (piano), Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Benny Goodman (clarinet) and others, highlight the passionate singing of the great Lady Day. Holiday was known for her elegant phrasing, warm (often heart-rending) tone, and her coarse, witty parlance. This combination of musical and personal attributes was her charm and, indeed, few of her contemporaries could compete with such magnetism. In the entire history of jazz, arguably no one sang such standards as "You Go to My Head," "The Very Thought of You," and "God Bless the Child" with the same radiance as Holiday; these sessions are testament to this. Compiled from performances recorded between 1933 and 1944, this CD represents the golden years of Holiday's career. SKU: 1068408

Scorpion (UK Version)
Personnel includes: Eve (rap vocals); Da Brat, Trina, Teena Marie, Gwen Stefani, DMX, The Lox, Yung Won, Stephen Marley. Producers include: Dr. Dre, The Neptunes, The Marleys, Stevie J., Swizz Beatz. Engineers include: Chris Theis, Scott Kieklak, Steve Conover. "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Eve's 1999 debut album LET THERE BE EVE found this feisty female rapper emerging definitively from the shadow of the Ruff Ryders crew, establishing herself as a hip-hop artist to be reckoned with. Eve's up-front approach and image betray no weakness, but on SCORPION she's comfortable enough with her credibility to allow for melodic pop hooks like the tasty, Gwen Stefani-sung chorus of "Who's That Girl?" in the arrangements. "Swallow it up while I shove it down" is the imperative Eve directs to those who thought she'd be a one-hit wonder. If anything, SCORPION improves upon the first album, employing a wider range ofstyles that adds some funk and R&B to the mix, and utilizing a wider sonic palette. Of course, it's Eve's lyrical skills and forthright, confident approach that add the definitive signature to this impressive sophomore effort. SKU: 1056858

Theatre Of Pain (Expanded) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include the "Home Sweet Home" video. Motley Crue: Vince Neil (vocals, harmonica); Mick Mars (acoustic, electric & slide guitars, background vocals); Tommy Lee (piano, drums, percussion, background vocals); Nikki Sixx (synthesizer, 4 & 8-string bass, background vocals). Includes interviews conducted by Alan K. Stout. Digitally remastered by Chris Solem (1999, Future Disc). After a lengthy tour in support of the breakthrough SHOUT AT THE DEVIL, Motley Crue almost called it quits. In December of 1984, singer Vince Neil was involved in a D.W.I. car crash that killed hisfriend Razzle (drummer for the promising Hanoi Rocks) and injured two passengers. The other Crue members drowned their sorrows in drink and drugs but somehow managed to write and record 1985's highly anticipated third album, THEATRE OF PAIN. Whereas SHOUT was a heavy metal album, THEATRE returned to the glam stylings of the debut TOO FAST FOR LOVE but was musically more experimental. THEATRE may not have been as strong as SHOUT, but the album proved another platinum-plus smash, spawning two immensely popular MTV videos-a rollicking cover of The Brownsville Station's "Smoking in the Boys Room" and the tender, piano-based ballad "Home Sweet Home." THEATRE solidified Motley Crue's standing as one of the world's top metal bands. While the album contains more filler than usual, tracks such as "City Boy Blues," "Louder Than Hell," and "Raise Your Hands to Rock" are up to par with earlier Crue anthems. SKU: 1084763

Blazing Arrow
Blackalicious: Chief Xcel, Gift Of Gab (rap vocals). Additional personnel includes: Ben Harper (vocals, guitar); Gil Scott-Heron, Jaguar Wright (vocals); Chali 2NA, Lateff The Truth Speaker, Keke Wyatt, Rakaa, Babu, Saul Williams, Lyrics Born (rap vocals); Karl Denson (flute); Anthony Coleman (trumpet); Money Mark (piano, organ); Paul Humphrey, Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson (drums); Cut Chemist. Producers include: Chief Xcel, ?uestlove, Hi-Tek, Ben Harper, The Innocent Criminals. Engineers include: Chief Xcel, Mario Cldato, Robert Caranza. For progressive hip-hop acts, aesthetic and commercial success seem to rarely walk hand in hand. Blackalicious proves to be an exception to that rule with BLAZING ARROW. Pessimists might suggest that the album's chart placing is due to the impressive array of guest stars, from old-school rap poet Gil Scott-Heron to R&B siren Jaguar Wright and rock-pop fave Ben Harper. While these guests do give an indication of the breadth of influences and styles present here, they are only the tip of the iceberg. "I'll build my heaven on what is here" Blackalicious offers on "Nowhere Fast," giving both an example of their positive lyrical outlook and indication of the sonic riches so abundant on BLAZING ARROW. An impressive array of sophisticated sonic collage elements, hard-grooving funk rhythms, strings, and free-flowing, intelligent raps are at the heart of this complex-yet-organic recording. You'll hear none of the soundalike synth riffs and jeep beats that plague so much cookie-cutter hip-hop. These guys are blazing a new path. SKU: 1073283

Tired Sounds Of Stars Of The Lid, The
Stars of the Lid had made a career out of carefully crafted ambient sounds, mixing more guitars into the electronic stew than some of their peers, but turning out just as placidly entrancing and hypnotic a result. THE TIRED SOUNDS isn't a drastic departure from the group's established format--there are no pop choruses, reggae beats, or free jazz explorations here--but there's enough development to keep things interesting. Two discs in length, this is undoubtedly the group's most elaborate and extended sonic statement. At times, the textures are lush and full-bodied, encompassing what sounds like orchestral tones. Other moments are poignant in their small-scale fragility. The emotional tone of the record is varied as well, from cautiously sunny to moody and shadow-filled. That the Stars of the Lid can achieve such a breadth of evocations using little more than drones and slow washes of sound is a testament to their skill with theirchosen palette. SKU: 1084907
