Last Temptation, The (Limited Edition)
THE LAST TEMPTATION is based on a three-part comic book series, created by Neil Gaiman, author of the comic "Sandman." Personnel: Alice Cooper, Chris Cornell (vocals); Stef Burns (guitar, background vocals); Dan Wexler (guitar); Derek Sherinian (keyboards, background vocals); John Purdell (keyboards); Greg Smith (bass, background vocals); David Vosikkinen (drums); Lou Merlino, Mark Hudson, Craig Copeland, Brett Hudson (background vocals). Producers: Duane Baron, John Purdell, Don Fleming, Andy Wallace. Engineers: John Agnello, Duane Baron, Andy Wallace. Recorded at Music Grinder Studios, Hollywood, California; Sony Recording Studios,Santa Monica, California; Record One Studios, Sherman Oaks, California; Devonshire Studios, North Hollywood, California. In 1994, coming off the commercial disappointment of HEY STOOPID, Alice Cooper decided to switch gears and composed his first concept album since the '70s, THE LAST TEMPTATION. Cooper worked with a trio of producers--Andy Wallace (Slayer), Don Fleming (Hole), and Duane Baron (Ozzy Osbourne)--to create an interesting sonic balance. A number of renowned rock artists again lend their songwriting talents to this collection. However, only Chris Cornell actually plays on the album, unlike the all-star cast of musicians who appeared on Cooper's last release. While the album wasn't a major hit in the United States, it was Alice's third top-10 release in England and easily his best and most satisfying work in years. The pair of songs that Cornell co-wrote with Cooper, "Stolen Prayer" and "Unholy War," are the album's best; it's a headbanger's dream come true to hear these two exceptional singers share the mic. Other highlights include the opening epic, "Side Show"; the dramatic album closer, "Cleansed By Fire"; and the melancholy "It's Me." Although THE LAST TEMPTATION was a great return to form for Alice, his failure to promote it with a tour made it one of his most overlooked albums. SKU: 1063895

Trials And Tribulations Of Russell Jones, The [PA]
Full title: The Trials & Tribulations OfRussell Jones. Personnel includes: Ol' Dirty Bastard, Insane Clown Posse, Sunz Of Man, Mack 10, Buddha Monk, Brooklyn ZU, Big Syke, C-Murder, Too Short, Royal Flush, E-40 (rap vocals). Producers include: Tytantic, One Eye, The Trackstars, Erik Norquist, Brooklyn ZU. Engineers include: Brooklyn ZU, Erik Norquist, One Eye. The unpredictable, irrepressible rapper who once desired to be known as Big Baby Jesus spends most of THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF RUSSELL JONES doing what he does best. The album is full of hardcore hip-hop that's as informed by ODB's left-field quirkiness as it is by street-life scenarios and graphic lyrics. The R&B-tinged "Caught Up" may be teeming with thug boasts, but most of these come from guest Mack 10; the loopy mack daddy parody that opens the track is more indicative of ODB's wacky sensibility. As always, nobody since Blowfly has taken so much pleasure in getting downright nasty, as on the self-explanatory "Dirty & Stinkin" where rap-rock representatives Insane Clown Posse aid in getting nice 'n' sleazy. Throughout the album, ODB sounds just unhinged enough to mean exactly what he says, even though a degree of ironic distance is implied. It's that gray area that provides the essential tension making him a vital artist. SKU: 1085904

Ken Burns Jazz (The Story Of America's Music)
Full title: Ken Burns JAZZ: The Story Of America's Music. Compilation producers include: Ken Burns, Steve Berkowitz, Sarah Botstein, Michael Cuscuna, Peter Miller. Includes liner notes by Geoffrey C. Ward, Michael Cuscuna, and Loren Schoenberg. Digitally remastered by Seth Foster and Mark Wilder (Sony Studios, New York, New York) and Kevin Reeves (Universal Mastering Studios-East, Edison, New Jersey). This is part of the Columbia/Legacy Ken Burns JAZZ series. Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns is renowned for the thoughtful approach he takes to big subjects (baseball, the Civil War, etc.). Jazz fans are fortunate to have someone as intellectually curious as Burns tochronicle the music. As expected, he takes the historian's view that's needed to really cover the story of jazz's development. The fact that a five-disc box can barely scratch the surface speaks more about jazz's rich legacy than it does about any shortcomings of this impressive soundtrack to Burns' work. The discs are divided up chronologically, moving from the Dixieland sound of Louis Armstrong and King Oliver to the big bands of Duke Ellington, on to the bop innovations of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. If this set is lacking in its representation of more "modern" jazz variants (free jazz and beyond), it's only because the 1920s and '30s material that gives the box much of its heft is such an endangered species in need of careful attention. The jazz innovations of the latter 20th century are well catalogued elsewhere, but the nearly lost world of pre-swing is what this box illuminates best. SKU: 1051246

Let 'em Burn [PA]
Personnel includes: Hot Boys, Big Tymers, Lac, TQ. Recorded at Patchwerk Recording Studios, Atlanta, Georgia, American Sector Recording Studio, New Orleans, Louisiana; Festival Recording Studios, Houston, Texas; Horizon Studios, Chicago, Illinois. A cursory listen to LET 'EM BURN might leave the listener with a mental image akin to the prototypical doo-wop scene: a bunch of friends hanging out a street corner, reveling in their skills and making music influenced by whatever happens to be passing by. Unfortunately, in the New Orleans ghettos where the members of the Hot Boys grew up, what's passing by is often likely to be murder, robbery, and drug dealing. This doesn't prevent B.G., Juvenile, Lil' Wayne, and Young Turk from making the most of their abilities, however, and LET 'EM BURN is a testament to what can happen when several immensely talented rappers are secure enough with their own skills to practice artistic generosity. The album also makes a great compare-and-contrast project for those interested in seeing different artists' approaches to the highly distinctive style that is New Orleans Dirty South hip-hop. Mannie Fresh's production puts a somewhat more jaunty spin on the usual G-funk grooves, which proves a perfect foil for the lazy-tonguedrhymes of the Hot Boys. SKU: 1081867

Greatest Hits
Also available in a 3-pack with DAVE BRUBECK'S GREATEST HITS and THELONIOUS MONK'S GREATEST HITS. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Julian "Cannonball" Adderly (alto saxophone); George Coleman, John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Herbie Hancock, Wynton Kelly, Red Garland, Bill Evans (piano); Ron Carter, Paul Chambers (bass); Tony Williams, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobb (drums). Producers: Irving Townsend, George Avakian, Teo Macero. Reissue producer: Nedra Olds-Neal. Recorded between September 10, 1956 and January 20, 1965. Originally released on Columbia (9808). Includes liner notes by George Frazier. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). GREATEST HITS? Well, this is a reissue of an LP that came out in 1969, when you might actually have seen Miles at the Fillmore West on a bill with the latest flower-power sensations from the Haight. In retrospect, GREATEST HITS does manage to tag a fair number of essentialbases, without the burden of covering Davis' subsequent "electric period," though it misses some early choices (nothing from BIRTH OF THE COOL, for example) and sidesteps the late-'60s, proto-electric period as well. While the material is not presented chronologically, it begins, in effect, in 1956, with "Round Midnight," a Red Garland/Paul Chambers/Philly Joe Jones rhythm section, and John Coltrane on tenor. Next, it's "So What," the de facto signature tune from KIND OF BLUE-Miles' real GREATEST HITS album and the one no listener should be without. The rest of the disc consists of material from 1963-64. The rhythm section of Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams is in place, but only "E.S.P." (from early 1965) finds Wayne Shorter on tenor-completing what became known as the Second Classic Quintet. "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "Walkin'," both live, feature George Coleman on tenor. Bringing Down The House
The soundtrack to the Queen Latifah vehicle BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE boasts a plethora of contemporary hip-hop talent, mostly chosen by Latifah herself. If the combination of N.E.R.D., Mr. Cheeks, and Foxy Brown isn't enough to rock your world, then there'sthe sure-fire Barry White slow-burn of "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More" to ensure maximum grooviness. Brown's "Watcha Gonna Do" misappropriates the bass riff and a few lyrics from Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" in the most exquisite way, while Mr. Cheeks's "Move Somethin" is, in inimitable Cheeks style, outrageous, absorbing, and danceable. Latifah herself makes a couple of appearances, notably on "Do Your Thing" with Mario Wynans where she brings her big-hearted, larger-than-life personality to bear on a typical "I am what I am" rap. But ultimately it's Barry White who both steals the show and locks the bedroom door from the inside with his inimitable "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More, Babe." SKU: 1083384

First "hits" compilation from possibly the best - and certainly the most underrated - band of the Britpop boom of the 1990s. Gun Hill Road
The Infesticons: Mike Ladd. Additional personnel includes: Anti-Pop Consortium, El-P, Mr. Lif, Saul Williams, The Sonic Sum Crew. Producers: M. Ladd, Omar Argurto, Fred Ones, Bruce Grant. Engineers: Nasa, Fred Ones, M. Ladd. GUN HILL ROAD is a concept album in which the Kristal-sipping, bootie-shaking, money-spending "Majesticons" are targeted for annihilation by the free-thinking, no-label-wearing, weed-smoking, manifesto-reading heroes, the "Infesticons." This cultural war takes place on a platform of dissonant, twisted beats courtesy of Infesticon ringleader and Gun Hill Road (a street in the Bronx) resident muse, Mike Ladd. Ladd, a poet-turned-MC, helped break down the wall between coffee shop poetry and streetcorner cipher hip-hop with his albums EASY LISTENING FOR ARMAGEDDON and WELCOME TO THE AFTERFUTURE. His razor-sharp tongue and penetrating powers of observation are just as strong here. Ladd's delivery and space-crafted beats are the highlight on any album he puts out; both are in top form as Ladd tackles materialism, corruption, corporate media and vanity via the Infesticons versus Majesticons skirmishes. Guest MCs and poets, from Liza Jesse Peterson and Saul Williams, to Priest and Beans of Anti-Pop Consortium, round out the avant garde roster. SKU: 1036448

Meteora (+DVD) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include behind-the-scenes video footage,a screensaver and weblinks. The accompanying DVD includes footage from LINKIN PARK TV. Linkin Park: Chester Bennington, Mike Shinoda (vocals); Brad Delson (guitar, bass); Phoenix (bass); Rob Bourdon (drums); Joseph Hahn (turntables, samples). In one of the most highly anticipated follow-ups of recent years, Linkin Park maintains its position at the top of the nu-metal heap with METEORA. The band labored carefully over their craft; for instance, the writing process of leadoff single "Somewhere I Belong" spawned 30 finished choruses before vocalists Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington arrived at the version found on the album. The combination of Shinoda's raps and Bennington's sing/scream vocals makes for an altogether complementary approach, best evidenced in "Faint" and "Easier To Run." The pressure felt by Linkin Park to meet a high standard with their sophomore release even finds it's way into the lyrics of "Nobody's Listening," where self-doubt and fear are almost all-consuming. Producer Don Gilmore (Apex Theory, Blind Tribe) mans the boards with a decisive lean towards acoustic drums. That is not to say by any means that Linkin Park's inventive use of samples and turntables is any less present or crucial to the group's now-signature sound. SKU: 1081486

Personnel: Billy Joel (vocals, harmonica, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Eric Gale (guitar, strings); Russell Javors, David Brown (guitar); Charles McCracken (cello); Toots Thielmans (harmonica); Mark Rivera (alto & tenor saxophones, percussion); David Sanborn (alto saxophone); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone); Joseph J. Shepley, Jon Faddis, John Gatchell (trumpet); Richard Tee (piano, organ); Leon Pendarvis (organ); Rob Mounsey (synthesizer); Doug Stegmeyer (bass); Liberty DeVito (drums, percussion); Ralph MacDonald, Bill Zampino (percussion); Michael Alexander, Rory Dodd, Frank Floyd, Lani Groves, Ullanda McCulloch, Ron Taylor, Terry Textor, Eric Troyer, Tom Bahler (background vocals). Recorded at Chelsea Sound & A&R Recording, New York, New York. This is where Joel reaches back to his roots, a process essential to a maturing artist who realizes he has to lookat where he's from before he can move further ahead. Things get off to a jumping start with the organ-driven R&B of "Easy Money," somewhat reminiscent of "Gimme Some Lovin'." Joel touches on the styles of the '50s and early '60s on the street-corner doowop of "The Longest Time" and the Four Seasons homage "Uptown Girl" (written for his then-wife, fashion model Christie Brinkley). Things get introspective on the moving, self-analytical title tune and the endearing pop ballad "Leave A Tender Moment Alone," which is graced by the harmonica of Toots Thielemans. While Joel was busy exploring the music of his boyhood on AN INNOCENT MAN, every tune still bears his distinctive stamp, and the album is one of his strongest. SKU: 1002223

Dragonfly
Personnel: Ziggy Marley (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, synthesizer, bass, drums, percussion); Cedella Marley (vocals); Marc Moreau (guitar, synthesizer, percussion, programming); Earl "Chinna" Smith, Steve Bigas, Blues Saraceno, James Harrah, David Lindley, Dan Warner, John Frusciante (guitar); The Scorchio Quartet (strings); Rami Jaffee (accordion, organ, keyboards); David Ralicke (saxophone); Ron Blake (flugelhorn); Lon Price, Lee R. Thornburg, Nick Lane, Greg Smith (horns); Tyrone Downie (piano, keyboards); Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (piano); Gary Corbett (Fender Rhodes piano); Eric Lynn (keyboards); Reggie McBride, Paul Bushnell, Flea (bass); Steve Jordan, SteveFerrone (drums); Richard Bravo, Luis Conte (percussion). Producers: Ross Hogarth, Ziggy Marley, Scott Litt. For his solo debut DRAGONFLY, Ziggy Marley casts his musical net further than his reggae roots and ends up with a collection of songs that sounds closer to Ben Harper than to Buju Banton. Enlisting the aid of Metallica producer Ross Hogarth and R.E.M. knob-twirler Scott Litt, Marley dabbles with Stax-flavored horns (a soulful "True to Myself"), neo-folk with Latin grooves (the bubbly title cut), and ethereal pop (the swirling "YKL [Don't You Kill Love]"). Aiding Marley in launching this solo venture are a number of famous names. Half of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, (Flea and John Frusciante) and Incubus DJ Chris Kilmore pop up on the punchy "Rainbow In the Sky," with the tattooed bassist returning on the somber "Melancholy Mood" and being joined by ex-Jellyfish keyboardist Roger Manning. Other notable musicians making the scene are six-string impresarios David Lindley and Blues Saraceno (the hard-rocking "I Get Out" and the anti-organized-religion diatribe "In the Name of God"), and omnipresent Wallflowers keyboardist Rami Jaffee. Celebrity contributions aside, Marley still manages to infuse a number of socially conscious messages throughout the album, culminating with "Shalom/Saalam," a sparse, whip-smart reggae cut addressing the need for Israeli/Palestinian peace. Jeff
Personnel: Jeff Beck (vocals, guitar); Saffron, Andy Wright, Ronni Ancona, Nancy Sorrell, Baylen Leonard, The Beeched Boys (vocals); Dean Garcia, Steve barney, Apollo 440, Kodish, Tony Hymas, London Session Orchestra. Producers includes: Dean Garcia, David Torn, Andy Wright, Apollo 440, Jeff Beck. Principally recorded at Metropolis, Apollo Control and BFD Studios, London, England. For JEFF, legendary guitar god Jeff Beck reunited with Andy Wright, the producerfor Beck's prior effort, 2001's YOU HAD IT COMING. In keeping with the creative theme of his last album, the Wallington native avoids being hidebound to the kind of classic-rock rut into which so many of his peers have fallen. Instead, he maintains his edge as an innovative string-bender by embracing new sounds and technological advances at the risk of alienating traditionalist fans. For this particular go-round, collaborators include experimental guitar/electronics cat David Torn of Splattercell fame, and Liverpudlian electronic trio Apollo 440. Bashing rhythms provide the impetus for much of Beck's high-energy guitar work, with Apollo 440 doing the biggest degree of pushing on the crash-and-bang of "Grease Monkey" and equally intriguing "Hot Rod Honeymoon," both alluding to Beck's well-known love of muscle cars. The first song finds Beck's guitar screaming and singing over the cacophony of Chemical Brothers-sized beats while the latter tune features bluesy riffs, clattering rhythms, and occasional Beach Boys-like harmonies. The former Yardbird also shines on calmer fare including the ethereal "JB's Blues" and "Bulgaria," a majestic folk song featuring accompaniment by a 40-piece orchestra and some of Beck's most poignant playing. Let Us Play (+CD-Rom) [ECD]
Disc 1 of LET US PLAY is a full audio disc. Disc 2 is a CD-Rom containing multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Jello Biafra (vocals); Chris Leslie (fiddle); Anne Quicke (flute); Tom Chant (saxophone); Jamie O'Dell (keyboards); Oliver Parfitt, Kaidi Tatham (Moog synthesizer); Cheyne Towers (bass); Bernard Purdie (drums); Talvin Singh (tablas); Paul Brook (programming); Gwen Jamois (electronics, tapes); PC (scratches). Producers include: Coldcut, Hexstatic, Jimpster, Steinski, Mass Media. Includes liner notes by Coldcut. In their ongoing effort to reclaim the crown snatched by subsequent sampler-pirates and turntablists, Coldcut's Matt Black and Jonathan More (joined by Paul Brook) drop their first album since 1994's PHILOSOPHY. Since PHILOSOPHY, acid-jazz has mutated into trip-hop and breakbeat, thanks in no small part to Black and More's activities as noted producers and as ringmasters of their pioneering Ninja Tunes label. LET US PLAY is stuffed with ideas, from the loquacious liner notes, subversive messages, and busy artwork to the supplementary enhanced CD of computer games and videos. Coldcut add trickier rhythms and obsessive sonic detailing to their mellow jazz and hip-hop foundations. "More Beats and Pieces" recasts Black and More's pioneering scratch-happy classic as a FatboySlim-esque freakbeat stormer. The vibes-and-microchips magic of "Return to Margin" and "Music 4 No Musicians" recalls Tortoise's jazz/rock and Steve Reich transgressions. Dead Kennedys provocateur Jello Biafra lends a sardonic monologue to "Every Home a Prison." Other esteemed guests include progressive beatsmiths Jimpster, legendary CTI drummer Bernard Purdie, old-school master Steinski, Ninja Tunes' own Herbaliser, and Luke Gordon (Spacer), all of whom add their unique flavors to LET US PLAY's enticing musical kaleidoscope of psychedelic funk and state-of-the-art studio wizardry. A portrait of the artist as hit singles machine, SHAKING THE TREE features Peter Gabriel's mostcommercial post-Genesis material in one convenient package. Every cut is superb, and the dazzling track list includes "Solsbury Hill," still rock's most eloquent resignation speech, the anti-apartheid classic "Biko," the magisterial "Don't Give Up" with Kate Bush, the MTV friendly "Shock the Monkey" and "Sledgehammer," among others. Critical carping about whether this package is representative of his oeuvre as a whole is beside the point. This is, clearly, the Peter Gabriel album you'd most want to play at a party. SKU: 1070120

Offering, The
Although THE OFFERING is a solo instrumental album, attimes it feels as if Mary Youngblood is only half the act, the other half being the 'studio' in which the 16 songs were recorded--in fact a large cave, known as the Moaning Cavern, located deep underground in Vallecito, California. The space's resonance, coupled with the frequent ping of water drops hitting primeval rock pools, creates a living, breathing environment that no sound samples can hope to evoke. SKU: 4134730
