Gentleman Of Leisure
Personnel: Jesse Winchester (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Jerry Douglas (vocals, lap steel & Weissenborn guitars, dobro); Vince Gill, The Fairfield Four, John Cowan, Jonell Mosser (vocals); Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar); Steve Cropper, Mike Henderson (electric guitar); Pat Bergeson(harmonica); Byron House (bass); John Gardner (drums). Recorded at Sound Emporium & Mountainside and Creative Recording, Nashville, Tennessee. The legendary singer-songwriter is back with a new set of tunes, one that balances melancholy soul-searching with a country-tinged funk (in the 1970s/Little Feat/Elvin Bishop/The Band/Sly & The Family Stone sense). Winchester's subdued, rather purr-like voice is a nice contrast to the soulful, gospel-inspired backing vocals, the sharp, Memphis-style guitar licks, and a loping southern groove. He turns his attention to a fine-dancing woman ("Sweet Little Shoe"), a club where he loves to unwind and dance ("Club Manhattan"), temptation and the most human of human foibles ("Evil Angel") and the fragility of emotions ("No Pride At All"). Fans of Lyle Lovett and Mary Chapin Carpenter are urged to check this Winchester fellow out (since he was doing his thing when Lovett and Carpenter were still in grade school). SKU: 4125157

Myriad
Gregg Bendian's Interzone: Gregg Bendian (vibraphone, glockenspiel); Nels Cline (electric & slide guitars); Steuart Liebig (bass); Alex Cline (drums, percussion). Recorded at New Zone Studios, Santa Monica, California in April 1998. Jazz drummer Gregg Bendian has played alternately thunderous and subtle free-form music with some of the most challenging players of the 20th century. He is perhaps best known for playing with pianist Cecil Taylor and improv icon Derek Bailey. Here, Bendian leads a group that doesn't get as "out" as Taylor or Bailey. In fact, MYRIAD is conventionally tuneful, dramatic, and swinging--but this session has teeth. "Intrepid" recalls the quirky chamber-swing/early fusion music of Gary Burton's RCA and (early) ECM recordings, when guitarists Larry Coryell and Mick Goodrick were in the Burton fold. "Pattern Master" has a Monk-ish angular groove--imagine a plugged-in John McLaughlin jamming with the Modern Jazz Quartet. Throughout, guitarist Nels Cline plays in a style best described as insanely lyrical, and drummer Alex Cline brings a terrific, Roy Haynes-like sense of swing and subtlety to the proceedings. MYRIAD recalls an era when jazzcould be electric (in all senses of the word) and uncompromising yet approachable at the same time. SKU: 1031762

No Half Steppin' (Explicit)
Personnel includes: Sharissa (vocals, arranger); Tank (various instruments); Johnaton D., Frank Romano, Alexander Mosley (guitar); Ronnie Davis (keyboards); Dewey Browder, Daryll Brown (bass); Poke & Tone (programming); Shelene Thomas (background vocals). Producers include: Bryce Wilson, Lamont Henchman, The Unit, Funklabb, Mark Batson. Engineers include: Jason Goldstein, Mike Anzel, Funklabb. Sharissa is a latter-day Motown starlet whose voice recalls a young Gladys Knight, among others, and whose lyrics continue a long traditon of tough women who expect their due from their men. She's off and running from the first note of the deceptively downbeat title track of her debut, setting the tone for the rest of the album with a litany of things with which she'll accept no half measures. "Any Other Night" holds an equally tough line (her man's come around on the wrong night--she's with someone else) but there'll be no fear and no apologies from this woman's woman. Sharissa's most obvious competitor is the equally down-and-dirty Mary J Blige--it'd be a treat to get these two in the same room together--and despite her lack of recording experience, in NO HALF STEPPIN' she's more than able to stand up to any comparisons with that doyenne of R&B drama. She sings witha voice that belies her youth and reflects a grounding in R&B history that'll stand her in good stead in the future. SKU: 1074936

Chet Baker And Crew
Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Phil Urso (tenor saxophone); Bobby Timmons (piano); Jimmy Bond (bass); Peter Littman (drums);Bill Loughbrough (tympani). Recorded at the Forum Theater, Los Angeles, California on July 24, 25 & 31, 1956. Includes original liner notes by Woody Woodward. This astounding live set was recorded with Chet Baker's regularly touring ensemble at the Forum Theater in Los Angeles in 1956, after the trumpeter's return from an extensive European tour. The group is incredibly in sync and agile on the many intricate arrangements. Of special note is the presence of percussionist Bill Loughbrough who contributes three performances on his unusual chromatic tympani, or "boobams," which are his own invention. Baker is self-assured and in excellent form here, blowing many fine solos in his classic "cool" style. Tenor man Phil Urso and pianist Bobby Timmons are in equally good form, supporting Baker with flawless precision and taste. Baker's only vocal performance comes on the Gerry Mulligan original "Line For Lyons." Other notable cuts include Mulligan's "Revelation," the Latin-esque "To Mickey's Memory," and Al Cohn's swinging "Music to Dance By." Taken as a whole, this set is a nice snapshot of Baker in performance at the peak of his early popularity. SKU: 1082942

"No Me Ames" was nominated for the 2000 Billboard Latin Music Award for Tropical/Salsa Track of the Year, Hot Latin Trackof the Year & Hot Latin Track of the Year by a Vocal Duo. "No Me Ames" was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The multi-talented dancer/singer/actress Jennifer Lopez fulfilled a lifelong dream with the release of ON THE 6, an album that gets its title from the subway she took from her Bronx home to Manhattan for dance training and auditions. The overnight hit "If You Had My Love" helped show the world Jennifer's emotive and vulnerable vocal style. With the collaborative help of Emilio Estefan Jr., the dance rhythms and salsa brass of "Let's Get Loud" are refreshing and infectious. In the bittersweet "Should've Never," her sultry spoken-Spanish vocals make the song incredibly sexy in its desperation. "Feelin' So Good" has a hip-hop feel, thanks to songwriting and production help from the omnipresent Sean "Puffy" Combs. Collecting a debt from her appearance in one of his music videos, Marc Anthony makes a surprise appearance on "No Me Ames." With a seamless skill at singing ballads, R & B, and dance music, Jennifer Lopez shows great promise for the musical chapter of her amazing career. SKU: 1018752

Soul Journey
Personnel: Gillian Welch (vocals, guitar); David Rawlings (various instruments, background vocals); Mark Ambrose (acoustic guitar); Greg Leisz (dobro); Ketcham Secor (fiddle); Matt Andrews, Jim Boquist (bass). SOUL JOURNEY, the follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2001 outing TIME (THE REVELATOR), finds Gillian Welch and creative partner David Rawlings getting creatively looser and enlisting the aid of a back-up band. The decision to flesh out the sound beyond the duo format (as had been the case on the past couple of albums), ends up beinga successful one. The result is a blend of traditional songs such as "Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor" with self-penned cuts like the haunting "One Monkey" and the cantering "Lowlands." The languid aura infusing most of these 10 songs gets blown away with "Wrecking Ball," a meaty-sounding original tune that not only borrows its title from a Neil Young song, but offers a combination of gnarly guitar and sonic build-up that seems like a hat-tip to Crazy Horse. Man-machine, The [Remastered]
Kraftwerk: Ralf Hutter, Florian Schneider (vocals, synthesizer); Karl Bartos, Wolfgang Flur (percussion). Recorded at Klingklang Studio, Dusseldorf, Germany. All tracks have been digitally remastered. THE MAN-MACHINE and its predecessor, 1977's TRANS-EUROPE EXPRESS, deserve their exalted position in the pantheon of modern music, if only for their importance in shaping the future development of hip-hop and dance music. The concept behind The Man-Machine took Kraftwerk's mechanistic vision of humanity to its logical extreme, but themusic within captured the group at their most engagingly melodic. Instantly memorable, "The Model" reached number 1 in the UK singles chart three years later, and proved to be a direct inspiration for the wave of gloomy electronic bands that quickly followed. However, none of them ever came close to grasping the subtle human touch that lay behind Kraftwerk's faceless exterior. SKU: 1086877

Storm Force Ten
After two extremely pop-oriented albums produced by oddball Mike Batt, Steeleye Span went through yet another of their many changes of direction. Fiddler Peter Knight left the band--temporarily, as it would turn out--and former members Martin Carthy and John Kirkpatrick briefly re-appeared. Carthy's acoustic guitar and Kirkpatrick's accordion dominate the proceedings, with Maddy Prior taking most of the lead vocals, largely relegating her usual singing partner Tim Hart to harmonies. The eight lengthy songs--the epic "The Victory" is nearly nine minutes long--sound like they were mostly recorded live without overdubs. This is both a refreshing change of pace from the lushly-orchestrated Mike Batt albums and a perfect setting for the band's modernized take on traditionalBritish folk music. STORM FORCE 10 is one of Steeleye Span's most traditional albums, and also one of their best. SKU: 4125255

By The Roads And The Fields
Fourth album from Bristol post-rock outfit, following 2000's 'Collected Songs'. Capitol Punishment (The Megadeth Years)
CAPITOL PUNISHMENT contains a hidden track after "Peace Sells." Megadeth: Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar); Marty Friedman, Al Pitrelli (guitar, background vocals); JeffYoung, Chris Poland (guitar); David Ellefson (bass, background vocals); Jimmy DeGrasso, Nick Menza (drums, background vocals); Gar Samuelson, Chuck Behler (drums). Producers include: Mike Clink, Dave Mustaine, Max Norman, Paul Lani, Randy Burns. Engineers include: Jeff Balding, Max Norman, Paul Lani. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (August 2000, Gateway Mastering). Looking back at bootleg videos of early Metallica, it was apparent that there was one too many strong egos in the band's dynamic. Lead guitarist Dave Mustaine was quickly ousted, but it wasn't long before he would assemble a formidable group built around his technical speed metal guitar and sneering vocals. After 8 albums, Capitol Records released a sonic retrospective documenting the evolution of Megadeth. CAPITOL PUNISHMENT opens with two brand new tracks, "Kill The King" and "Dread & The Fugitive Mind," both of which quickly illustrate where the band has been and where they're going. The most striking aspect of CAPITOL PUNISHMENT is that the CD's sequence. It moves backwards from 1999's RISK back to 1986's PEACE SELLS. There is a greater focus on the '90s era of Megadeth's career, when the band began to steer their sound closer to mainstream metal, not unlike what Mustaine's former band-mates in Metallica accomplished during the same time frame.
