If You Can't Lick 'em Lick 'em
Personnel:Ted Nugent (vocals, guitar, bass); Dave Amato (guitar, background vocals); Jai Winding (Hammond B-3 organ); John Purdell (keyboards); Chuck Wright (bass); Pat Torpey (drums, background vocals); Tom Werman (percussion). Producers: Tom Werman, Duane Baron, John Purdell. Recorded at Conway Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California 1987. Includes liner notes by Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Ted Nugent. All tracks have been digitally remastered. By 1988, such younger hard rock bands as Motley Crue and Guns N' Roses had eclipsed such older rockers as Ted Nugent in the raunch-rock category. Whereas Nugent had had the raw and memorable riffs to back up his caveman shtick in the '70s, he appeared to be merely trying to keep pace with the younger breed a decade later, rather than leading the pack. Including such Nuge-approved rockers as "The Harder They Come (The Harder I Get)" and the melodic "Spread Your Wings," IF YOU CAN'T LICK 'EM proved to be Nugent's last solo album for some time. He shortly afterwards became a member of all-star rockers Damn Yankees. SKU: 1068093

Never Say Never

Norwood Sr., Kayla Parker, LaTonya Holman, Donyle Jones, Meri Thomas, Vatrena King, Alfie Silas, Bridgette Bryant, Kristle Murden, Mona Lisa Young, Nikisha Grier,Carmen Twillie, Carmen Carter, Bobbette Jamison, Alex Brown, Maxine Waters, Yvonne Williams, Ricky Nelson, Richard Jackson (background vocals). Producers: David Foster, Rodney Jerkins, Brandy. NEVER SAY NEVER was nominated for a 1999 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "The Boy Is Mine" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, and was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best R&B Song. "Almost Doesn't Count" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Avoiding the dreaded sophomore slump, Brandy delivers a fresh-sounding, well- crafted second album that sounds as much like pop as it does R&B. NEVER SAY NEVER features a song, "Have You Ever?," that was written by mega-songstress Diane Warren and produced by super-producer David Foster. The lead single, "The Boy is Mine" is a duet with fellow R&B'er Monica. Keeping up with the trend of big-time collaborations, multi-platinum rapper Mase makes an appearance on "Top of the World," which seems custom made for jeep jockeys. Although sprinkled with other contributors, most of the album was produced by Rodney Jerkins. With a focus that is sometimes lost on a follow-up to a smashing debut, Brandy's composure and experience shine through in a product that is 16 songs deep. The album also contains a cover of "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)," produced by Foster. SKU: 3104894

Icon Is Love, The
Personnel includes: Barry White (vocals, keyboards, drum programming); Terry Lewis, Jimmy Jam (various instruments); Gerald Albright (saxophone); Jack Perry, Tony Nicholas, Chuckii Booker (keyboards, drum programming); Jeff Taylor (drum programming); Crystal Penni, Mike Blackmon, Patrick C. Blackmon, Jimmy Wright, Carrie Harrington, Core Cotton, Libby Turner (background vocals). Producers include: Barry White, Jack Perry, Gerald Levert, Chuckii Booker, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Engineers include: Jack Perry, Barry White, Greg Burton. Recorded at Aire LA Studios, Glendale, California; Flyte Tyme Studios, Edina, Minnesota; Rise Labs and Record One, Sherman Oaks, California. "Practice What You Preach" was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. "Baby's Home" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and THE ICON IS LOVE was nominated for the 1996 Grammy for Best R&B Album. He is love and love is he. You are there to be pleased, he to serve. When he says that you and he apart is like ice cream without the cone, this much is clear: he is the ice cream, you are the cone. When he croons "Baby's Home," you had better believe this: "baby" is he himself. Barry White pulls this off the same way he always has, not with Madonna-esque moxie, but with Superman sincerity. The man has never uttered an insincere word in his life. In the opener here, he challenges a woman who teased him for too long to quit the games and get on with the love. The only teasing White does for the album's remaining hour is the kind that comes with foreplay, which he's prepared to engage in for way more than an hour. In most of the songs, which average around six minutes, he whispers deep baritone somethingsfor a verse, then breaks into a laid-back croon over jazzy, funky backing tracks dabbed here and there with strings. Slow and sweet, but always funky. He draws out "There It Is" the furthest of all, offering a full minute of a single bit of plinking percussion, over which he moans, "don't say anything, don't say one word." He hasn't even taken his clothes off, and you've already melted. SKU: 1003049

Ride On Dreadlocks 1975-1977
Personnel includes: Linval Thompson, U-Roy (vocals). Includes liner notes by Steve Barrow. Digitally remastered by Tony Webster (Cedar Audio). Linval Thompson was one of the great producer Bunny "Striker" Lee's last star singers. Later, Thompson himself became a fine producer, also continuing to release his own albums; from roughly the mid-'70s through the early '80s, Thompson was a well-known dancehall artist. RIDE ON DREADLOCKS collects eight Lee-produced tracks with three of Thompson's productions. Of the Thompson produced tracks, "12 Tribes of Israel," and "Jah Jah Is I Guiding Star," have previously been hard to find, so it's great to have these two beautiful songs on one disc. In an effort to distinguish this compilation from those similar, some tracks have been extended from the originals. A great U-Roy version of "Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks" is also included. Thompson's vocals reflect his predecessor and friend,Johnny Clarke, his contemporary Barry Brown, and to some extent, the celebrated slurring of his idol Dennis Brown. However, Thompson's technique of seeming to float notes over rhythms makes his tunes uniquely atmospheric. SKU: 1034485

Hee Haw
Contains early recordings by The Birthday Party, including the HEE-HAW EP. The Birthday Party includes: Nick Cave (vocals); Roland S. Howard (guitar, saxophone); Mick Harvey (guitar, organ, bass); Tracy Pew (clarinet, bass); Phil Calvert (drums). Recorded at Richmond Recorders, Australia between August 1979 & January 1980. Digitally remastered by Phil Klum (Master Cutting Room, New York, New York). HEE HAW compiles the Birthday Party's work between 1979's DOOR DOOR album (released under the band name the Boys Next Door) and their first "proper" album, 1981's PRAYERS ON FIRE. The earliest tracks were recorded in 1979 and are full of bizarre time signatures, weird herky-jerky rhythms, and obscure lyrics. By the time 1980 rolled around with the "Mr. Clarinet" single, things were much more focused--the band retained all of those earlier elements, but managed to put them together into a more controlled, but no less explosive, package. Later that year, the "Friend Catcher" single further honed this approach--Tracy Pew's thick, serpentine bass playing, Rowland Howard's alternately discordant and razor sharp guitars, and Phil Calvert's hammering drums. Over it all, Nick Cave's harrowing vocals delivered the obscure and intensely weird lyrics. Standouts from this collection include the above-mentioned "Mr. Clarinet," a crunching track withsome wicked organ riffs courtesy of Mick Harvey (the band's designated multi-instrumentalist) and "Waving My Arms," a hyperactive pop song with gang vocals, a sonically clear guitar riff, and the occasional horn blast. It's also worth mentioning that this was probably the band's last straightforward song. SKU: 1008427

Pacer
The Amps include: Kim Deal, Jim MacPherson, Nathan Farley, Luis Lerma. Engineers include: Doug Easley, Davis McCain, Fluss. Regardless of whether The Amps are Kim Deal's next rock band or just a temporary reprieve from her old one (The Breeders), PACER, the group's debut, is a confident, forceful album, loaded with lo-fi nuggets and none of the sloppy baggage usually attributed to side projects. The cast is different--only Breeders drummer Jim MacPherson's Keith Moon-like explosions are familiar--but Deal's boisterous musical personality is presentthroughout. The settings are, at once, diverse and one-dimensional--gruff, punky rip-roarers ("Tipp City"), intoxocatingly simple garage-pop ("Pacer"), anthemic power-chord rock ("Dedicated"). And while the reinterpretation of an old Breeders b-side ("Hoverin") may be as close as Deal's lyrics have ever hinted at morality--"don't do it," she warns, "if you wanna stick around"--far more typical is her drunken query on the blustery "Empty Glasses": "Where's the waitress? Where's my other shoe?" Simple admissions like these make PACER the realistic soundtrack of '90s alterna-style. Drink it in. SKU: 1003005

Wedding Album, The
Duran Duran:Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Warren Cuccurullo. Additional personnel: Steve Ferrone (drums, percussion); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Bosco (percussion); Lamya, Tessa Niles, Karen Hendrix, Jack Merigg (background vocals); Milton Nascimento. Commonly known as "The Wedding Album" to differentiate it from their self-titled 1981 debut, 1993's DURAN DURAN was an unexpected commercial comeback for Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes and John Taylor, spawning two hit singles, "Ordinary World" and "Come Undone," that were better than anything the band had done in nearly a decade. The rest of the album succeeds in subtly updating the classic Duran Duran sound without straying too far from their '80s chart-pop roots. The politicized "Too Much Information" and "Sin of the City" (concerning a disaster at a unlicensed New York dance club), are surprisingly aggressive tunes, but elsewhere, "None of the Above" and "Love Voodoo" are more traditional Duran fare. The album's two biggest surprises are the duet with Tropicalia superstar Milton Nasciemento on "Breath After Breath," and the surprisingly reverent take on the Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale." This Is Normal [ECD]
THIS IS NORMAL is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files, including Mixman Studio LE software which can be used to remix any song on the album. Personnel: Daniel Agust, Hafdis Huld, Magnus Jonsson (vocals); Siggi Baldursson (acoustic guitar, drums, percussion); Arni Kristjansson (guitar); Porir Baldursson (keyboards); Jakob Smari, Johann Asmundsson (electric bass); 'Ymir (bongos); Gudmundur R. Einarsson (snare drum); Biggi Veira, Alfred More, Herb Legowitz, Bix Pender (programming); Jon Olafsson, Ragga (background vocals); The Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. Recorded at The Green Room, Reykjavik, Iceland. On THIS IS NORMAL, GusGus' second full-length, the Icelandic collective shows 1995's POLYDISTORTION was just the beginning. This record brims with fun and infectious hooks, club-rocking beats, and alluring production. But the group's secret weapon might well be its undeniable spirit of optimism. GusGus makes state-of-the-art dancemusic, though there are enough pop elements here to appeal to a wide audience. "Ladyshave," the opening track and initial single, is a cheekily risque number built on a pumping organ vamp that could send a room full of fraternity brothers into a heartfelt bout of rump shaking. With an insistent chorus that sticks in the brain after one listen, the song would sound appropriate in a glam version of CALIGULA. The ecstatic "Starlovers" features a gospel call-and-response chorus that paints vivid pictures of a rapturous club crowd testifying in unison. While leaping from style to style, recalling the trip-hop of Massive Attack, the futuristic post-disco sound of Curve, and the sonic noodling of fellow Icelander Bjork, GusGus shows enough originality and flair to keep from sounding like mere pastiche artists. Solitude
This CD re-issue combines tracks from two Billie Holiday Clef LPs (BILLIE HOLIDAY SINGS and SOLITUDE), and four bonus tracks from the same time period. Personnel: Billie Holiday (vocals); Flip Phillips (tenor saxophone); Charlie Shavers (trumpet); Oscar Peterson (piano); Barney Kessel (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Alvin Stoller (drums). Producer: Norman Granz. Compilation producer: Michael Lang. Recorded in Los Angeles, California in 1952. Originally released on Clef (118, 690). Includes liner notes by Vincent Pelote. Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Polygram Studios). Cut right at the beginning of the LP era, SOLITUDE is the first and best of many "recitals" Billie Holiday recorded for Norman Granz's Verve label. Coming off the large orchestra Decca recordings of the late '40s, these small group sessions with trumpeter Charlie Shavers inaugurate Holiday's late period, the voice beginning to deteriorate but her artistry deepening in response. The lonely, even bleak sound she projects perfectly captures a special New Yorkfeeling. The heartbreak is palpable on "Autumn In New York," represented here by both an LP and a scratchy 78 version. Not that the album is ultimately a downer. From the very beginning, Billie seems inspired by small improvised settings, and her jaunty versions of "Blue Moon" and " I Only Have Eyes For You" are solid proof here of her indomitable musical spirit. Producers: Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, Arif Mardin, Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Hamlisch, Carole Bayer Sager. Compilation producer: Yves Beauvais. Engineers: Rick Hall, Tom Dowd, Jerome Gasper, Ron Albert, Chuck Kirkpatrick, Lewis Hahn, Jean-Michel Poudubois, Gene Paul, Howard Albert, Chuck Kirkpatrick, Phil Schier, Ray Thompson, Phil Ramone, Lew Hahn, Frank Kejmar, Roger Anfinsen. Recorded from 1967-1976. Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (July 1992, Sterling Sound, New York). This four-disc box represents the cream of Aretha Franklin's canon. Initially signed to Columbia by the legendary John Hammond, Franklin spent her time floundering about as the label struggled to find a stylistic fit for her. When her contract was up, she signed with Atlantic and was immediately teamed up with producer Jerry Wexler. He promptly enlisted the musical magicians down in Alabama's Muscle Shoals studio as her back-up band. It was as if her bottled-up creativity had been let loose on an unsuspecting world. Like Ray Charles before her, Lady Soul uses her vibrant vocals and powerful piano playing to create a crossroads where musical genres met. Starting with the Gospel she cut her teeth on as a child, Franklin throws ingredients of soul, country, jazz and pop into a delicious musical gumbo. Aretha Franklin's amazing range allowed her to not only write much of her own material, but travel along and pick songs off a wide variety of musical trees. In addition to covering songs by Otis Redding and Don Covay, Franklin also dips into the catalogs of Nina Simone, Willie Nelson, The Beatles and Elton John. During her 12 years with Atlantic, the Queen Of Soul also took turns dabbling in material associated with Motown, Philly soul and Stax. QUEEN OF SOUL is essential listening. SKU: 1075245

Reach The Beach
The Fixx: Cy Currin (vocals); Jamie West-Oram (guitar); Rupert Greenall (keyboards); Adam Woods (drums, percussion). Recorded at Farmyard Studios, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Although The Fixx's debut album, 1982's SHUTTERED ROOM, featured a couple of college radio hits in "Red Skies" and "Stand or Fall," it was the following year's REACH THE BEACH which was theirAmerican cultural breakthrough. Thanks to incomprehensible videos for the equally inscrutable singles "Saved By Zero" and "One Thing Leads to Another," The Fixx were suddenly pop stars. Given that the group's music is basically streamlined art-rock--think 10cc without a sense of humor, or Asia with better hooks--this cachet with the teen set is just one of the more surprising examples of MTV's power. Besides those two hits, highlights of REACH THE BEACH include the enjoyably tense "Running," the spare and moody "Opinions," and the downright normal pop song "Privilege." Though overexposure has tarnished the singles, the rest of REACH THE BEACH still sounds surprisingly fresh. SKU: 1082796

Strange Little Girls
Recorded at Martian Engineering, Cornwall, England and The Nut Ranch, Los Angeles, California. STRANGE LITTLE GIRLS was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. "Strange Little Girl" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Although the CRUCIFY EP found Tori Amos serving up an entire program's worth of covers, STRANGE LITTLE GIRLS takes a different approach. This time out, she's purposely chosen material exclusively written by men, and delivered the songs from a distinctly female point of view. Stripping down many of her arrangements, this eclectic artist achieves chilling results with her whispered/spoken vocals representing the dead woman being dumped in a lake by her husband in Eminem's ''97'Bonnie & Clyde" and the ethereal delivery saturating Slayer's ominous "Raining Blood." Elsewhere, Amos uses a delicate touch to do justice to Tom Waits' stirring "Time," then goes in an opposite direction, inviting Adrian Belew to pump plenty of fuzz-guitar into a swirling take on Neil Young's "Heart Of Gold." Also notable is the use of cleverly patched-in sound-bites referring to John Lennon's murder and statements from proponents of the Second Amendment onthe Beatles gem "Happiness Is A Warm Gun." Other highlights include Tori's infusion of desire into the Velvet Underground's "New Age," and the sassy swagger that coats the Strangler's "Strange Little Girl." Tori Amos may be strange, but her eccentricity is the key to her musical genius. SKU: 1066096

His 'n' Hers
Pulp: Jarvis Cocker (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer); Russell Senior (guitar, violin, acoustic bass); Candida Doyle (piano, keyboards); Steve Mackey (bass); Nick Banks (drums, percussion). Recorded at Brittania Row, London, England. The track "Razzmatazz" is not listed on the album artwork. Pulp's breakthrough album arrived after an unbelievably long haul, and then Jarvis Cocker was suddenly sharing front pages of music magazines with Liam and Damon. Here, the songs explored now-familiar Pulp territory, social class, seedy sexual encounters, voyeurism ('Babies'), bad sex ('you bought a toy that can reach the placeshe never goes'), good sex, and lots more sex, all blessed with Cocker's humorous, touching and, conversely, often innocent lyrical observations. Capable of writing almost unbearably tender love songs and laments for wasted lives ('your hair is a mess and your eyes are just holes in your face'), Cocker's honesty and insight were distilled to perfection in the wonderful 'Do You Remember The First Time'.
