Count Basie & Sarah Vaughan
Personnel: Sarah Vaughan, Joe Williams(vocals); Frank Foster (arranger, tenor saxophone); Thad Jones (arranger, trumpet); Ernie Wilkins (arranger); Frank Wess (alto & tenor saxophones, flute); Marshall Royal (alto saxophone, clarinet); Billy Mitchell (tenor saxophone); Charlie Fowlkes (baritone saxophone, flute); Sonny Cohn, Joe Newman, Snooky Young (trumpet); Henry Coker, Al Grey, Benny Powell (trombone); Kirk Stuart (piano); Freddie Green (guitar); Eddie Jones (bass); Sonny Payne (drums). Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Capitol Studios, New York, New York in July 1960 and January 1961. Includes liner notes by James Gavin. While this album is misleadingly titled (Count Basie doesn't appear on the record at all--the piano is actually played by Kirk Stuart), it's a brilliant teaming of the Count Basie Orchestra and the legendary Sarah Vaughan. Basie's legacy was largely due to his band leading skills, and he rarely featured himself on record or in concert; to hear the sound and approach that Basie's sidemen use is to hear the musical conception and style of Basie himself. "Perdido" and "Alone" showcase Sarah Vaughan's incredible range and perfectly controlled vibrato, and "Teach Me Tonight" and "If I Were a Bell" feature Vaughan with Joe Williams, the latter featuring the two singing icons trading lyrics back and forth. Marked by wonderful Thad Jones arrangements, COUNT BASIE AND SARAH VAUGHAN swings hard, and melts the heart. SKU: 3105062

Greatest Hits
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. AliceIn Chains: Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Layne Staley (vocals); Mike Starr, Mike Inez (bass); Sean Kinney (drums, percussion). Producers include: Dave Jerden, Toby Wright, Rick Parasher, Alice In Chains. MIA for the latter half of the '90s and into the new millennium, Alice In Chains added GREATEST HITS to the list of seemingly posthumous releases in a canon whose last studio album was a 1995 self-titled release. This bare-bones 10-song sampler does serve as a quick overview for neophytes interested in one of the seminal bands to emerge from a generation of grunge bands including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Between Jerry Cantrell's thick, sludgy riffs and Layne Staley's primal howl, AIC had the market cornered on nihilism. Four cuts on this compilation come from the band's 1991 masterpiece DIRT and serve as a centerpiece, the most compelling being the harrowing "Rooster" (a tribute to Cantrell's Vietnam vet dad), the hypnotic isolationism of "Them Bones," and the plodding despondency of "Angry Chair." Elsewhere, AIC throws some curves with "I Stay Away" (featuring lush orchestration that gilds this dark lily) and the unexpectedly tender 1995 cut "Heaven Beside You." For those with a casual interest in Alice In Chains, GREATEST HITS will work well. Hardcore fans are directed to the more generous NOTHING SAFE: THE BEST OF THE BOX. SKU: 1064579

Surfacing [ECD]
SURFACING is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files. Personnel: Sarah McLachlan (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano); Brian Minato (electric guitar, bass); Michel Pepin (electric guitar); Yves Desrosiers (guitar, lap steel, bass); Ash Sood (piano, drums, percussion); Pierre Marchand (keyboards, bass, percussion, drum programming, background vocals); Jim Creeggan (acoustic bass). SURFACING was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Pop album. "Building A Mystery" won the 1998 Grammy for Best FemalePop Vocal Performance. "Last Dance" won the 1998 Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "Adia" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. On her fifth album, Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan returns with a simpler collection of songs which quietly explore the darker aspects of human nature. SURFACING is a group of straightforward songs which get right to the point, both musically and lyrically, dealing with such heavy topics as faith, life and death in an appealingly accessible way. McLachlan's unmistakable soaring voice displays its usual angelic tones and amazing versatility, abetted by the familiar, assured stamp of longtime producer and collaborator Pierre Marchand, making SURFACING McLachlan's most mature album yet. Right from the start, with the anthem-like pop tune "Building a Mystery," McLachlan sets the tone, simultaneously shadowy and calm. SURFACING is an introspective musical landscape, a tight collection of thought-provoking songs from one of today's most talented artists. SKU: 1001770

OYAYA
Personnel include: Angelique Kidjo(vocals); Ramon Stagnaro (guitar, tres); Dominic Kanza (guitar); Justo Almario (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Luis-Eric Gonzalez (baritone saxophone); Francisco Torres (trombone); Rene Camacho (bass guitar); Michito Sanchez, Walter Rodriguez (percussion); James Felix, Tata Vega (background vocals). Something of a stylistic chameleon, Angelique Kidjo has moved through radio-friendly pop, soul-diva stylings, rock, folk, and the vocal and rhythmic currents of her native Benin, Africa. OYAYA., another step in Kidjo's musical odyssey, finds the artist exploring the sounds of the Caribbean, underscoring the link between African tradition and Latin music, as it evolved in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and elsewhere. Strains of bolero, merengue, salsa, and ska all figure into the mix here, and are expertly blended with the aid of Kidjo's versatile voice and her superb backing musicians. Kidjo impresses as much with the variety contained on OYAYA. as she does with the accuracy and aplomb with which she approaches each style. The opener, "Seyin Djro," is a passionate, high-octane salsa number with polyrhythms that will coax even the most sedentary listeners to the dance floor. "Mutoto Kwanza" mines a high-energy ska groove, while the down-tempo, calypso-tinged "N'Yin Wan Nou We" showcases Kidjo's earthy, seductive ballad singing. More cohesive and focused than many of the vocalist's previous releases, OYAYA. is packed with beautiful, exuberant music, making for Kidjo's most mature and musically compelling recording. Sebastopol
Personnel includes: Jay Farrar (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, tambura, piano, keyboards); Gillian Welch (vocals); David Rawlings (acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar); John Agnello (electric guitar, percussion); Kelly Joe Phelps (slide guitar); Steve Drodze (melodica, piano, keyboards, background vocals); Lou Winer (saxophone); Tom Ray (bass); Dade Farrar (upright bass); Matt Pence, Jon Wurster (drums, percussion). After the breakup of alt-country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, Jeff Tweedy gave free reign to the full range of his stylistic impulses with Wilco. Jay Farrar stayed closer to the roots-rock path with his post-Tupelo outfit Son Volt. On his first solo album, however, Farrar finally lets it all hang out. SEBASTOPOL probably won't alienate Son Volt fans--there aren't really any dips into completely foreign territory--but this is still the broadest sonic palette Farrar has employed to date. The album is dotted by guitars overdriven to absurd extremes, thick, atmospheric keyboards, and song-structures that leave country roots far behind. As ever, Farrar's lyrics split the difference between the elliptically poetic and the viscerally resonant. Some tracks do reach back to the Tupelo/Son Volt sound, particularly "Barstow," which features guest appearances by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. For the most part, though, Farrar sounds like he's never had so much fun letting the sonic lion out ofits cage. SKU: 1067603

What Women Want
Producers: Glen Brunman, Bonnie Greenberg-Goodman. Engineers include: Robert Fernandez. The film WHAT WOMEN WANT, starring the indefatigable Mel Gibson, is a comedy about a man with the ability to hear women's thoughts. Aside from the expected comic hijinks, this gift leads him to a deeper understanding of the opposite gender. Accordingly, the film's soundtrack is full of love songs as rendered by a combination of old-school pop crooners and contemporary artists. All conceptual threads aside, listening to Tony Bennett belt his way through "The Good Life," or to Frank Sinatra's insinuating "I've Got You UnderMy Skin," is an experience intrinsically worth the price of admission. The intermingling of a more modern aesthetic via Christina Aguilera's teen-pop anthem "What a Girl Wants" and Meredith Brooks' fiesty "Bitch" keeps listeners on their toes, but not enough to unbalance the overall sonic experience. At The Greek 1966
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Jimmy Hamilton (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Paul Gonsalves (tenor saxophone); Russell Procope (alto clarinet); Harry Carney (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet); Cat Anderson, Cootie Williams, Herbie Jones, Mercer Ellington (trumpet); Lawrence Brown, Chuck Connors, Buster Cooper (trombone); Jimmy Jones (piano); John Lamb, Jim Hughart (bass); Sam Woodyard, Ed Thigpen (drums); Bunny Briggs (tap dancing). Recorded live at the Greek Theatre Los Angeles, California on September, 23, 1966. Includes liner notes by Alun Morgan. Jazz giants Ellington and Fitzgerald's first recorded collaboration was in 1957 on Ella's DUKE ELLINGTON SONG BOOK project. Nine years later, this Los Angeles concert would show that not only were both artists still in the pink, but that they could still make magic together. The Ellington orchestra opened the show, and from latter-day Ellington band star Paul Gonsalves'fiery tenor to work to old-timer Cat Anderson's upper register mastery on his feature "Prowling Cat," the band is in fine form here. Ella joins the band for a solid, jumping version of "Sweet Georgia Brown" before introducing her own trio to the audience. By the time Ellington and company join in with Ella for the set-closing "Things Ain't What They Used To Be," the listener has been given a lesson in the blessed union of swinging rhythm and sophisticated harmony, the very marriage that made both of these artists household names in the jazz world. Scarface (Music Inspired By The Movie) [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. When Brian De Palma's ultra-violent gangster film, SCARFACE, came out in 1983, it would be impossible to predict the imprint the movie would leave on the then-nascent world of hip-hop. At the time, the rap landscape was much more lighthearted, focusing on battling with rhymes instead of guns; it was before BDP's 9mm went bang, N.W.A. came STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, and the Geto Boys related their grotesque stories from the street. Al Pacino's darkly potent performance as uncompromisingly ruthless drug-boss Tony Montana resonated in the world ofgangsta rap--lines from SCARFACE were sampled in dozens of songs, the lifestyle was emulated, and Akshen of the Geto Boys even rechristened himself Scarface. To celebrate the movie's 20th Anniversary, Def Jam has released MUSIC INSPIRED BY SCARFACE, a killer compilation collecting tracks that feature some connection to the seminal picture, from 1983's classic anti-drug anthem "White Lines (Don't Do It)" by Grandmaster Flash to Joe Budden's 2003 track "Pusha Man." The album also features songs by practically every vital hardcore rapper who came in between, including the aforementioned N.W.A. and Scarface, along with Jay-Z, DMX, Nas, Lil' Kim, Mobb Deep, Notorious B.I.G., and many others. Given the wealth of SCARFACE-related material out there, MUSIC INSPIRED BY SCARFACE was an inevitable project, and stands as a valid chronicle of the evolution of gangsta rap. SKU: 1088197

International Superhits
Green Day: Billie Joe (vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica); Mike Dirt (vocals, Farfisa organ, bass); Tre Cool (accordion, drums, percussion). Producers: Green Day, Jerry Finn, Rob Cavallo. Filling in grunge's fading pop appeal, Green Day andpeers Offspring and Rancid kicked off a neo-punk revolution in the mid-90s still reverberating seven years later with bands like Blink-182 and Fenix TX. INTERNATIONAL SUPERHITS is a compact overview of the band's career-making major label run starting with 1994's DOOKIE right up to new songs like the rambunctious "Maria" and choppy charm of "Poprocks And Coke" recorded specifically for this compilation. D.I.Y. to the core, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirt and Tre Cool clung to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) best exemplified by the straightforward punk of "Jaded". Basic ingredients include punchy guitar chords, undeniable hooks and tight harmonies that can be heard in their breakthrough rant against ennui ("Longview") and equally strident latter-day anthem for the underdog ("Minority"). Armstrong's constantly improving songwriting found him spitting out gems like the infectious "When I Come Around," inadvertent prom theme "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" and brilliant heavy mass "Brain Stew". Although Green Day missed the original wave of late '70s punks like The Clash and The Jam, INTERNATIONAL SUPERHITS! proves this San Francisco pop-punk trio wouldn't have had much trouble fitting in alongside these legendary names. Origin Vol.1
Led by Ebbot Lundberg, Swedish retro-rockers the Soundtrack of Our Lives started making inroads worldwide in the early 2000s. By the time of their 2005 album, ORIGIN VOL. 1, the group had definitively broken through to the mainstream, even charting in the notoriously hard-to-crack US. While TSOOL has never been a band of revivalists self-consciously recreating the sounds of a bygone era, they are clearly indebted to the big guitar riffs, anthemic sweep, and larger-than-life vision of the latter-day Move and mid-period Who and Pretty Things. In other words, ORIGIN VOL. 1 is Swede-filteredBritrock for those who find neo-psychedelia a tad too precious, but still hold dearly to old-school classic-rock values. ORIGIN finds Lundberg and company further refining those values, and adding an unmistakably contemporary (but never anomalous) production sheen. SKU: 6572046

All Is Dream [ECD]
Mercury Rev: Jonathan (vocals, acoustic guitar); Grasshopper (guitar); Jeff (piano, drums); Dave (Mellotron, bass). Additional personnel includes: Mary Gavazzi Fridmann (vocals); Tony Visconti (string arranger); Jason Russo (guitar); Rex L. White (pedal steel guitar); Larry Packer (violin); Suzanne Thorpe (flute); Marc Guy (French horn); Justin Russo (Fender Rhodes piano); Joel Eckhaus (bowed saw). Producers: Dave Fridmann, Grasshopper, Jonathan, Jeff Mercel, Max Lichtenstein. Engineers include: Dave Fridmann, Grasshopper, Johnathan. Mercury Rev dismantles the classic definition of a rock band. Members of this collective music project have retained separate, independent lives, convening periodically to record majestic sound collages--truly brilliant pieces of art-rock that pilfer as much from Pink Floyd's progressive psychedelia as they do from Phil Spector's grand, intricate production techniques. ALL IS DREAM is vintage Mercury Rev. The proper sequel to 1998's DESERTER'S SONGS comes off as another epic soundtrack to a movie never made--a collection of musical scenes scraped from the subconscious that is best heard continuously from start to finish. The sonic flow is so seamless that no one song stands out, yet each is unique. "Nite and Fog" combines meandering keyboards with a soft, gorgeous backdrop of string accompaniment, while "Tides of the Moon" is driven by a thick, walking bass line and ghostly musical saw. Impressively, the album maintains a cohesive quality despite the vast instrumental diversity displayed from track to track. Held together by waves of orchestral outbursts and vocalist JonathanDonahue's strangely comforting, child-like vocal style, ALL IS DREAM is a symphonic-psychedelic meditation of the highest order.
