Time Is Of The Essence
Personnel: Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Larry Goldings (organ); Pat Metheny (guitar); Elvin Jones, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Bill Stewart (drums). Recorded at Avatar Studios and Right Track Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Michael Brecker. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award forBest Jazz Instrumental Album by an Individual or Group and "Outrance" was nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Tenor saxophone master Michael Brecker has shared the stage and studio with most every major drummer in modern music at one time or another. It was three very special stick-slingers, however, that Brecker chose to feature on TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE: the fiery Jeff "Tain" Watts, the inventive Bill Stewart, and the incomparable powerhouse Elvin Jones. Along with Brecker's muscular wail, guitar legend Pat Metheny and organ wizard Larry Goldings offer some stunning musical vehicles for these three outstanding percussionists. It is Brecker's signature tenor tone and bravado that prominently conducts the proceedings and he is in fine form sparring with Jones on the waltzing opener "Arc of the Pendulum," complete with Elvin's signature loping gallop. Watts gives a commanding performance on the quirky "Dr. Slate" that offers some of the most rhythmically intricate ensemble work on the disc. Stewart is his usual amazing self on such tracks as the funky "Half Past Late" and "Renaissance Man," urging Brecker, Metheny, and Goldings onward with seemingly endless intensity. Elvin gets the closing remark with Brecker's "Outrance," another dancing groove that features exemplary playing by all. SKU: 1051502

Motown 40 Forever
Producers include: Berry Gordy, Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Smokey Robinson, Nickolas Ashford. Includes liner notes by Nelson George, Ruth Adkins Robinson and Georgia Ward. MOTOWN 40 FOREVER, a celebration of the label's 40th Anniversary, is the perfect overview of this musical institution. In Motown's early days, Berry Gordy's "Sound Of Young America" crossed racial lines and quickly became a part of America's cultural identity. Starting with 1961's "Please Mr. Postman" and "Shop Around" (by The Marvelettes and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles respectively), Motown quickly became a major presence at the top of the charts. Throughout the '60s, talent flowed from the Motown studios whether it was in the form of artists (Gladys Knight, The Temptations, The Supremes) or songwriters (Holland-Dozier-Holland, Whitfield-Strong). Gordy'sknack for finding musical gold took him through the '70s (Jackson 5, The Commodores), the '80s (Rick James, Dazz Band) and into the '90s (Shanice, Boyz II Men). SKU: 1000968

Portrait Of Genius [Remastered]
All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Angel's The Ravi Shankar Collection. On PORTRAIT OF GENIUS, sitar legend Ravi Shankar teams up with jazz flautist Paul Horn to create a fusion of styles that essentially combines the virtuosity of Indian classical music with Indian folk melodies. Ravi Shankar is known for his extensive work in pure Indian classical music. However, for this anomalous 1964 recording, Shankar has adaptedand abridged a number of folk melodies to fit his ensemble, which consists of himself, Horn, two tabla drummers, and four other performers who play various other indigenous Indian instruments. Among the seven tracks heard here, "Gat Kirwani" and "Dhun" are the most compelling. On the former, Shankar's fast melodic flourishes are superbly executed, as is the complex call and response established between himself and tabla drummer Alla Rakha. SKU: 1004318

Right Back
Long Beach Dub Allstars: RAS-1 (vocals, guitar); Opie Ortiz (vocals); Tim Wu (saxophone); Jack Maness (keyboards, background vocals); Eric Wilson (bass); Marshall Goodman (drums, percussion, turntables, programming); Bud Gaugh (drums). Additional personnel: Barrington Levy, Half-Pint, Tippa Irie, HR, Fletcher (vocals). Producers: Field Marshall, Miguel, Eddie Ashworth. Three years after the accidental overdose of Sublime's Brad Nowell prematurely derailed the band's impending success, his rhythm section (EricWilson and Bud Gaugh) reconvened with the Long Beach Dub Allstars. Joined by a cadre of friends, Wilson and Gaugh became a California version of Sly & Robbie for this posse of reggae lovers. Having already made their mark backing up the Wailing Souls on PSYCHEDELIC SOULS, the Long Beach Dub Allstars' RIGHT BACK is a smooth transition that finds this septet collaborating with a number of dancehall legends. Among the musical guests are Bad Brains frontman HR ("New Sun"), master toaster Half Pint ("Pass It On"), and UK dancehall king Tippa Irie ("Sensi"). Non-reggae cameos include Pennywise guitarist Fletcher on "My Own Life" and Tone Loc soundalike Dangr, whose excellent lyrical flow dominates "Kick Down." Throughout RIGHT BACK, the LBDA maintain an easygoing rhythmic fluidity that bubbles through the punk-pop of "Rosarito" and the autobiographical "Trailer Ras." Tying together this genre-busting experience is a guest spot by lover's rock legend Barrington Levy that opens and closes the album. Levy's contributions to the reverb-heavy "Righteous Dub" are only surpassed by a poignant reworking of Sublime's "Saw Red." SKU: 1047240

Live At The Roxy Theatre
Personnel: Brian Wilson (vocals, keyboards); Probyn Gregory (vocals, guitar, trumpet, French horn, tannerin); Jeffrey Foskett, Mike D'Amico (vocals, guitar, percussion); Nick Walusko (vocals, guitar); Scott Bennett (vocals, keyboards, vibraphone, percussion); Darian Sahanaja (vocals, keyboards, vibraphone); Jim Hines (vocals, drums); Taylor Mills (vocals, percussion); Paul Mertens (flute, piccolo, alto & baritone saxophones); Bob Lizik (bass). Recorded at the Roxy Theatre, Los Angeles, California in April 2000. Originally released on Brimel (1001). Includes liner notes by David Leaf. This document of the Beach Boys' frontman's first solo tour is an instant classic. Backed by a supremely sensitive big band, including criminally underrated power popsters the Wondermints, Brian Wilson offers a cannilychosen tour of his catalogue. Familiar favorites like "Good Vibrations" and "In My Room" are nestled against slightly more obscure (but equally memorable) tunes like "This Whole World" (perhaps the most perfect two-minute pop symphony ever written) and brand new gems like "This Isn't Love." Wilson himself is in excellent voice, sounding like he's having the time of his life, and the whole thing ranges from the inspirational to the gorgeous. SKU: 1069497

People [Remastered]
Digitally remastered by Stephen Marcussen. When 22 year-old Barbra Streisand released PEOPLE in September 1964, she was at the beginning of what would be a long and fruitful career. The album is vintage Streisand. With the title track (originally from "Funny Girl") eventually becoming a classic song and signature Streisand number, the album is indicative of a young talent finding and defining herself. The standards and showtunes are given that Streisand touch, with her humorous shtick showing on "When In Rome (Do As The Romans Do)." Yet the Broadway-like radiance is interwovenwith that VOICE. "How Does The Wine Taste?" and "My Lord And Master" mark the emergence of a truly original vocal style. Barbra gets gritty in "Supper Time" and entrancing in "Autumn." PEOPLE is a fabulous record and an excellent representation of Streisand's early work. SKU: 1071711

Ten Rounds
Personnel includes: Tracy Byrd, Mark Chesnutt (vocals); Billy Joe Walker Jr., Biff Watson (acoustic & electric guitars); B. James Lowry, Rivers Rutherford (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason (electric & gut-string guitars); Kenny Greenburg (electric guitar); Dan Dugmore, Paul Franklin, Russ Pahl, Scotty Sanders (steel guitar); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Larry Franklin (mandolin, fiddle); Mike Haynes, Steve Patrick (trumpet); John Jarvis (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer); Tony Harrell (keyboards); Mike Brignardello, Michael Rhodes (bass); Paul Leim (drums, percussion); Eddie Bayers (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); Marty Brown, Lisa Cochran, John Cowan Andy Griggs, Wes Hightower, Liana Manis, Tammy Pierce, Harry Stinson, Curtis Wright (background vocals). Producers: Billy Joe Walker Jr., Tracy Byrd. Engineers: Stephen Tillisch, Julian King, Jason Lehning. Recorded at Emerald Sound Studios, The Tracking Room and Our Place Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Tracy Byrd's first album ofthe new century starts out with something you could easily mistake for a Warren Zevon song. This versatile country artist's subtly changing song choices hold the listener's interest over the entirety of TEN ROUNDS; he's carved a niche for himself as the gutsy antithesis to the glitzier pop-country of Shania Twain or Garth Brooks. "Somebody's Dreams" is an effective chronicling of life's misfortune's that underscores Byrd's rootsy appeal. Elsewhere he strays into Jimmy Buffet territory with the marimba-accompanied "Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo," gets all introspective on "How Much Does the World Weigh," and makes a credible and rocking bid for the nation's airwaves with "Summertime Fever," a litany of funtime activities that's as smoothly delivered as suntan oil. " A Good Way to Get on My Bad Side" is pretty much Byrd's statement of intent--he likes Van Halen and George Jones, Charlie Daniels and the Rolling Stones, hates "cowboy rap" (?), and feels that "a little sissy in a cowboy hat ain't country," statements which will probably be endorsed by and further endear him to his many fans. Walkin' In The Shadow Of Life
The Neville Brothers: Ivan Neville (vocals, guitar, Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, keyboards, bass instrument, drums); Art Neville (vocals, Hammond b-3 organ, keyboards); Cyril Neville (vocals, drums, percussion); Aaron "Fred" Neville Jr. (vocals, drums, programming); Aaron Neville (vocals); Jason Neville (rap vocals); Ian Neville (guitar); Charles Neville (flute, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Omari (drum programming). Additional personnel: B.G. (rap vocals); Milton Davis (guitar, bass instrument, programming); David Ryan Harris (guitar); Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andews (trumpet); James Bevelle (drum programming); J Infinite. Producers: The Neville Brothers; Milton Davis; Ivan Neville. Recording information: Neville Neville Land Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana. One of the first families of funk, the Neville Brothers are the musical royal family of New Orleans. While it doesn't feature aspects of the sound that made albums like FIYO ON THE BAYOU so distinctly "N'Awlinz," 2004's WALKIN' IN THE SHADOW OF LIFE may well be the hardest funk the brothers have ever put on record. There are echoes of P-Funk on "Can't Stop the Funk," "Carry the Torch," and the title track, right down to the snare hits, the snapping bass, Charles's laid-back Maceo Parker-inspired sax, and Ivan's Bernie Worrell-influenced keyboards. Similarly, the Neville Brothers' jazzed-up take on "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)" is a standout Temptations update. Art's deeply funky voice played against Aaron's angel-gone-wrong tenor might be one of contemporary music's most successful and satisfying juxtapositions, probably at its best on the absolutely gorgeous song "Brothers." On one level, WALKIN' unfolds like a concept album, a song cycle that starts with the gray areas of the title track, works its waythrough the power of music, the church, the street, the family, and back to the church, with a wonderful version of the Melodians' reggae classic "Rivers of Babylon." Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me
Personnel includes: Gloria Estefan (vocals); Jorge Casas (guitar, mandocello, bass, fretless bass, programming); Tim Mitchell, Juan R. Marquez,Andy Goldman (guitar); Emilio Estefan, Jr. (accordion); Ed Calle (tenor saxophone); Randy Barlow (trumpet); Lauren Hammock, Andrew Lewinter (French horn); Teddy Mulet, Dana Teboe (trombone); Clay Ostwald (piano, programming); Lawrence Dermer (piano, Fender Rhodes, tambourine, programming, background vocals); Steve Rucker (drums); Edwin Bonilla (percussion); Donna Allen, Rita Quintero, Joy Francis, Rick Krive, Lagaylia Frazier, Charles Christopher (background vocals). Producers: Emilio Estefan, Jr., Jorge Casas, Clay Ostwald, Lawrence Dermer. Recorded at Crescent Moon Studios, Miami, Florida; Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida; Edison Studio, New York. Includes liner notes by Gloria Estefan. Several of the classic pop covers on HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME are re-done with Latin percussion and big-band touches, but Estefan and her producers don't bend them beyond their breaking points. Estefan maintains her prowess accomodating herself to songs ranging from the half-century-old standard, "Goodnight My Love," to the Brill Building pop song, "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," and the disco "Turn The Beat Around." Estefan melds herself with old favorites and comes up with a warm, low-key collection of songs sung around the campfire. Yet in this case the campfire is a state-of-the-art recording studio complete with big band. Having fun with the material, Estefan takes on the Vicki Sue Robinson disco hit "Turn The Beat Around" with a nasal voice and sharp, clipped words matching the scratchy sounds of the guitar and electronic drums. Then she opens up to sing Neil Sedaka's ballad "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" in a plaintive, melismatic style that sounds not unlike Sedaka himself. Other highlights include a heartstopping classical-guitar rendition of Gerry & The Pacemakers' "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying," and a lighthearted, big production "Cherchez La Femme," the early-disco hit by Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, in which Estefan's band, lush with clarinet, trumpets and other brass, emphasizes the song's Cuban-via-New-Orleans heart. Compliments (Remastered & Expanded)
This 2005 reissue includes 10 previously unreleased tracks. Personnel include: Jerry Garcia (vocals, guitar, classical guitar); Larry Carlton, Arthur Adams, Ben Benay (guitar); Geoff Muldaur (clarinet); Jackie Kelso (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Amos Garrett (trombone); Michael Omartian (piano, tack piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Merle Saunders (organ); John Kahn (double bass, bass guitar); Ray Siegal (double bass); Ron Tutt (drums); Bobbye Porter Hall (congas, guiro, shaker, tambourine, wood block, bells); Clydie King, Maria Muldaur (background vocals). Recording information: Devonshire Studios, Los Angeles, California. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Jerry Garcia's second solo album contains the genesis of the Jerry Garcia Band, which would go on to become nearly as stable a performing unit as the Grateful Dead over the next two decades. Produced by bassist John Kahn and also featuring organist Merl Saunders and drummer Ron Tutt, COMPLIMENTS consists almost entirely ofan eclectic mix of covers selected by Garcia and Kahn. These range from early rock & roll favorites (Chuck Berry's "Let It Rock" and the Marvelettes' Smokey Robinson-penned "When the Hunter Gets Captured By the Game") to later material (Van Morrison's "He Ain't Give You None" and Dr. John's "What Goes Around"). Garcia even takes on the first of what would be many settings of Irving Berlin's Tin Pan Alley standard "Russian Lullaby," playing acoustic classical guitar. Effortlessly wide-ranging and characteristically loose and good-natured, COMPLIMENTS is a low-key masterpiece that shows off Garcia's often-overlooked interpretive skills. SKU: 6585205

Inside Job
Personnel includes: Don Henley (vocals); Randy Newman (conductor); Stevie Wonder (keyboards, background vocals); Dorian Holley, Darryl Phinnessee, Mervyn Warren, Josef Powell, Carmen Twillie, Julia Waters, Luther Waters, Maxine Waters, Oren Waters, Monalisa Young, Terry Young, Kevin Dorsey, Michael Mishaw, Mervyn Warren, Kip Lennon, Mark Lennon, Michael Lennon, Pat Lennon, Jana Anderson, Valerie Carter (background vocals); Michael Fisher, Glenn Frey, Randy Jackson, Danny Kortchmar, Stan Lynch, Jai Winding, Stuart Brawley, Don Felder, David Paich, Dean Parks, Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell, Scott F. Crago, Timothy Drury, Gregg Bissonette, Frank Simes, Jebin Bruni, Lance Morrison, Steve Gurr, Larry Klein, Jimmie Vaughan, John Corey. INSIDE JOB was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Taking You Home" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and "Workin' It" was nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. The former Eagle's first solo album in more than a decade doesn't sound much like the Eagles. Musically, the album is a melange of folk rock, mild funk, blues, and piano driven New Age balladry reminiscent of Bruce Hornsby. Lyrically, the songs continue in the vein of Henley's last recordedoriginal outing, the 1994 Eagles reunion single "Get Over It." The years seem to have mellowed Henley enough that he sees the irony of a rock star addressing important issues like ecology ("Goodbye to a River") or class warfare. Other notable tracks here include "Taking You Home," a lush romantic ballad, and "Nobody Else in the World But You," featuring some deft keyboards by guest Stevie Wonder. "Damn it, Rose," is a genuinely poignant song, from the perspective of a single father whose wife has committed suicide. The most ambitious track, however, is "They're Not Here, They're Not Coming," which is not only the album's best rocker, but a hilarious dissection of UFO mania as "a sorry substitution for a spiritual life." Kershaw Sessions
Between the mid-'80s and the early '90s, Hitchcock and the Egyptians made several recordings for broadcast on Andy Kershaw's British radio program. These nineteen songs are culled from six different performances. The Egyptians were a tight, rocking ensemble who were equally adept at songs of ferocious volume and songs of quiet beauty. While most of the selections were recorded before a live audience, a handful were performed acoustically in Kershaw's kitchen. Included from that session is a reverent and engaging version of Dylan's "Open The Door Homer." The album's other cover is the traditional calypso number, "The Banana Boat Song." Atthe time, the band was regularly using the song as warm-up, and the rendition here was in fact never included in a broadcast. SKU: 4123318

Definitive Billie Holiday, The (Ken Burns Jazz)
Personnel includes: Billie Holiday (vocals); Toots Camarata (conductor); Johnny Hodges, Tab Smith (alto saxophone); Ben Webster, Lester Young, Flip Phillips, Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone); Harry Carney, Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone); Roy Eldridge, Buck Clayton, Charlie Shavers, Joe Guy, Doc Cheatham (trumpet); Urbie Green, J.J. Heard, Sid Catlett, Alvin Stoller, Chico Hamilton, Osie Johnson (drums). Compilation producers: Richard Seidel, Ben Young. Recorded between 1935 and 1958. Includes liner notes by Phil Bailey. Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (Universal Mastering Studios-East). This is part of the Verve Records Ken Burns JAZZ series. Whatever gripes one may have with the short shrift given post-bebop jazz in Ken Burns's ten-part TV documentary JAZZ, he took great care in presenting the work of jazz's early pioneers, even to the extent of releasing a series of compilations by jazz figureheads that achieved a cross-licensing coup previously unimagined. For Holiday and the other jazz greats covered in these discs, the entirety of their career is sampled, regardless of the record label. Thus, this collection affords us the opportunity of hearing everything from "Lover Man" to "Autumn in New York," and moving from Decca to Verve recordings with impunity. As is the case with many of the other compilations in this series, if you're looking for a single disc that represents all the phases of the artist's career, this is probably it. SKU: 1050173

Mondo Head
Kodo includes: Ryutaro Kaneko, Motofumi Yamaguchi, Yoshikazu Fujimoto, Yoko Fujimoto, Eiichi Saito, Hideyuki Saito, Tomohiro Mitome, Tetsuro Naito, Akira Nanjo, Takeshi Arai, Kazuki Imagai, Tsubasa Hori, Kaoru Watanabe. Additional personnel includes: Airto Moreira (vocals, berimbau, drums, caxixis, bells); Zakir Hussain (tar, tabla, duggies); Mickey Hart (wooden flute, jegog, drums, talking drum, gong); Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica). Recorded at Studio X, Sebastopol, California and Sony Music Studios, Tokyo, Japan between March and July 2001. Includes liner notes by Mickey Hart. Anyone who has seen Kodo perform in concert will recall their spectacular onstage presence, massive taiko drums, and a singularly Japanese aesthetic thatdraws upon centuries of tradition. More than merely a bunch of guys with drums (at last count, they had four women members), Kodo is a performing arts collective that has helped reinvigorate the cultural forms of Sado Island, where they are based. On MONDO HEAD, the troupe gets together with half the crew from the classic worldbeat combo PLANET DRUM, including Zakir Hussain and Vikku Vinayakram of India, Brazilian Airto Moreira, and of course, the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart, who also produced the album. "Okesa Prayer" features the primal, multiphonic rumblings of the Gyuto Tantric Choir, while Azam Ali, formerly of Vas, provides haunting vocals on the final track, "Ektal." A wide-ranging album, if perhaps less geared to Kodo purists than to fans of contemporary world music. SKU: 1073299
