Templates
Flanger: Atom Heart (guitar, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, vibraphone, samples); Burnt Friedman (drums, percussion, samples). Recorded at Mira Music, Santiano, Chile in 1997. Numerous are the visions of where electronic music and jazz will ultimately meet, but few producers can rival the sophisticated interface blueprinted by Atom Heart and Burnt Friedman. Individually, each has spent years mapping possible paths for the future sound of jazz. Working together as Flanger, each doubling on live instruments and sampler, these two multi-talented draftsmen have finally perfected the template. As TEMPLATES opens, a books-on-tape voice zips through a catalog of stylistic signifiers. Flanger selects its palette from this curious sound-bite/byte manifest--which includes such dubious entries as "sports," "comedy animation," "body heat," and "commercial nostalgia"--and leaps straight into the startling fusion of "Musicto Begin With." Realizing the next step beyond Hancock's SEXTANT and HEADHUNTERS, Flanger's digitally precise edits splice Atom Heart's piquant Latin-beat instrumentation and Friedman's spry synthesized/natural drumming with icy glitches and incursive samples. In spite of the extensive digital tampering, TEMPLATES swings like crazy. The processing plays receptive third-person in Flanger's hot trio, feeding off Atom Heart's phenomenally funky basslines, vibes, and Rhodes on "Quicksilver Loom" and "Lata" and complementing Friedman's detailed trap-work with intriguing, pixel-popping grain throughout "Short Note With a Few," "Studio Tan," and the invigorating Martian-dub skank of "Full On Scientist." She
Personnel includes: Harry Connick, Jr. (vocals, piano, organ, Fender Rhodes, clavinet, guitar, bass, drums, percussion); Tracey Freeman (vocals, handclaps); Jonathan Dubose (guitar, background vocals); Alonzo Bowens (saxophone); Leroy Jones (trumpet); Mark Mullins (trombone); Tony Hall, George Porter, Jr. (bass); Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste, David Russell Batiste, Jr. (drums); Michael Ward (bongos, congas, tambourine, background vocals); Gregg Rubin (handclaps). Recorded in New Orleans, Louisiana and New York, New York. Known for a style reminiscent of a young Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick, Jr. takes a drastic turn on SHE, choosing the funkier side of his New Orleans roots. Enlisting the likes of George Porter Jr. and Ziggy Modeliste (the Meters' rhythm section), Connick easily shifts into a more '70s-oriented vibe. The Earth, Wind, & Fire sounding background vocals which wash over "Between Us" are preceded by Connick's grittier phrasing in thetitle track where he plays an organ like a man possessed. The experimentation on SHE is best exemplified on "Follow The Music" and its companion "Follow The Music Further" featuring a stab at beat-esque minimalism courtesy of Ramsey McLean's smoky recitation over a bare rhythm track. Harry Connick, Jr. pays the ultimate tribute to his hometown, coming out of the slinky instrumental "Joe Slam And The Spaceship" into "To Love The Language" which lovingly embraces the vernacular of the Crescent City. Wholly Earth
Personnel: Abbey Lincoln, Maggie Brown (vocals); Nicholas Payton (trumpet, flugelhorn); Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone, marimba); Marc Cary, James Hurt (piano); John Ormond, Michael Bowie (bass); Alvester Garnett (drums); Daniel Moreno (percussion). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York on June 3-5, 1998. Even a cursory listen to WHOLLY EARTH makes it seem fair to call Lincoln the inheritor of Nina Simone's lofty mantle. Like Simone, Lincoln employs an expressive, rough-edged tenor and an expansive compositional mindset in the service of something too multi-faceted to be pigeonholed as "jazz." Lincoln composed most of the tunes here and their variety runs apace with their high quality. Listen to her trade lines with guest vocalist Maggie Brown on the Mexican-inflected "And It's Supposed to be Love." Take in the whirling dervish that is the joyous title track, drawing on jazz, African and Latin rhythms (a combination put to effective use throughout the album) as Lincoln wails jubilantly over Alvester Garnett's churning percussion. The depth and breadth of Lincoln's abilities as both writer and vocalist are obvious. Some of the finest moments are made possible by the interplay between Lincoln and vibes/marimba wizard Bobby Hutcherson, whose contributions practically rate co-billing. SKU: 1004640

Hits Vol.2, The
Personnel includes: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Dez Dickerson (vocals, guitar); Sheila E. (vocals, percussion); Bernie Mac, Sheena Easton, Camille (vocals); Eric Leeds (flute, saxophone); Mazarati (background vocals). The Revolution: Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar); Matt Fink (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Lisa Coleman (vocals, keyboards); Brown Mark (vocals, bass); Bobby Z. (percussion). The New Power Generation: Mayte (vocals); Rosie Gaines (vocals, organ, progamming); Tony M. (rap vocals, background vocals); Levi Seacer Jr. (rhythm guitar, bass, background vocals); Tommy Barbarella (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Sonny T. (bass, background vocals); Michael B. (drums); Kirk Johnson, Damon Dickson (percussion, background vocals). Producers: The Revolution, The New Power Generation, Prince. Engineers include: Bob Mockler, Mic Guzauski, Ross Pallone. Compilation producer: Gregg Geller. THE HITS 2 includes a booklet with photography by Herb Ritts, plus extensive liner notes by Alan Leeds, and track annotations about previously unreleased material. Upon their release in 1993, the shorthand descriptors were that THE HITS ONE contained the "clean" songs while THE HITS TWO had all the "dirty" stuff. It's not quite so simple. Such songs as "Controversy" delve into politics; "Purple Rain" and "I Would Die 4 U" explore Prince's deeply felt religious iconography. And, with only rare exceptions, Prince's songs tend to be more teasing and erotic than blatant. Even the most outrageous tunes, like"Head," have a sly wit that marks them as much more than Penthouse Forum titillation material. Bottom line: these 18 tracks are the very pinnacle of '80s and early '90s pop-funk. THE HITS TWO contains two previously unreleased tracks, the funky "Peach" and the calculated-to-shock "Pope." This disc and its companion volume are also available as a box set with an essential bonus third disc of b-sides. SKU: 1003269

Crack A Smile And More
Poison: Bret Michaels (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Blues Saraceno (acoustic & electric guitars, piano, background vocals); C.C. DeVille (guitar, background vocals); Bobby Dall (bass, background vocals); Rikki Rockett (drums, percussion, background vocals). Producers: John Purdell, Duane Baron, Tom Werman. Compilation producer: Kevin Flaherty. Engineers: John Purdell, Duane Baron. Recorded at Devonshire Studios, North Hollywood, California from November to December 1994; Conway Studios, Hollywood, California in February 1988; MTV Studios, New York, New York on December 13, 1990. Includes liner notes by Kevin Flaherty. Digitally remastered by Evren Goknar (Capitol Mastering). Recorded in 1994 and subsequently shelved by Capitol, CRACK... finally sees the light of day six years later amid a POISON tour that's drawing commendable numbers. The album picks up where 1993's NATIVE TONGUE left off; it's a bluesy, rootsy, Black Crowes-like disc that follows on from the band's earlier flash 'n' glam period. "Best Thing You Ever Had" and "Be the One" bring harmonica and piano to theforefront, while guitarist Blues Saraceno lives up to his name on "Mr. Smiley" and "That's the Way I Like It." The band goes all-out punk on "Doin' as I Seen on My TV," returning to vintage Poison on "Sexual Thing," and delivering in addition an inebriated version of Dr. Hook's "Cover of the Rolling Stone." Seven bonus tracks of B-sides, rarities and outtakes make this an exceedingly collectable item for Poison fans everywhere. Other highlights include the raucous "Face the Hangman" (from the OPEN UP AND SAY...AAH! sessions), and an acoustic "Talk Dirty to Me" that's surprisingly successful. A fine addition to the Poison catalog, it's better late than never for CRACK A SMILE...AND MORE! SKU: 1032959

Time Sex Love [SACD]
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel includes: Mary-Chapin Carpenter (vocals, acoustic guitar); Duke Levine (electric guitar, mandola); John Jennings (electric slide guitar, percussion); Steve Nathan (piano); Jon Carroll (Hammond B-3 organ); Glenn Worf (bass); Dave Mattaks (drums); Garrison Starr, Jon Carroll (background vocals). Producers: Mary Chapin Carpenter, John Jennings, Blake Chancey. Recorded at Air Studios, London, England in November 2000. TIME SEX LOVE was nominated forthe 2002 Grammy Award For Best Engineered Album. With one foot in adult pop, one in country, and one in singer/songwriterdom, Mary Chapin Carpenter has always been tough to pin down. TIME*SEX*LOVE probably won't make it any easier for listeners to pigeonhole her, either. The album represents all the facets of Carpenter's work, from moody folk-rock ("Swept Away") to bluesy, Bonnie Raitt-like grit ("Simple Life"). Along the way, a number of other influences peek their head into the mix. The baroque, harmony-laden sound of "Maybe World" is redolent of PET SOUNDS-era Beach Boys, while the sparkling pop-rock of "The Long Way Home" is reminiscent of Carpenter's take on Lucinda Williams's "Passionate Kisses." "In the Name of Love" even employs a sitar as a key element. Clearly, Carpenter is an artist whose only unwavering characteristic is a commitment to intelligent songwriting. When it comes to stylistic detours, she shows an appealing tendency to wander the map. SKU: 1071428

Three Imaginary Boys (Deluxe Edition)
Full title: Three Imaginary Boys (Deluxe Edition). Package includes THREE IMAGINARY BOYS (1979) and RARITIES 1977-1979. The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals); Michael Dempsey (bass guitar); Laurence Tolhurst (drums). Producer: Chris Parry Compilation Producer: Robert Smith. Liner Note Author: Johnny Black. Recording information: 1977 - 1979. The 2004 US release of THREE IMAGINARY BOYS was a momentous event for stateside Cure fans, as it marked the first time the band's 1979 debut album had ever been available on CD in America. Equally enticing is the bonus disc containing '77-'79 demos, live tracks, and other rarities. The Cure's first US release was 1980's BOYS DON'T CRY, which replaced a number of TIB's tracks with previously non-LP singles, presenting a significantly different picture of the band. Far from the cloudy, effects-drenched goth-pop sound that later became its trademark, the Cure is in stripped-down mode here, delivering fairly straight-ahead post-punk tunes suggestive of a less angst-ridden Joy Division or a funkless Gang of Four. The stark, rhythm-guitar-dominated sound makes excellent use of space, suggesting a familiarity with dubthat's confirmed by the reggae-tinged "Meat Hook" (one of the tracks left off BOYS DON'T CRY). The rarities disc completes the picture, showing the earliest developmental stages of the band and presenting staples such as "Boys Don't Cry" and "10:15 Saturday Night" in embryonic form. Ghost
Personnel: Gary Numan (vocals); John Webb (vocals, saxophone, keyboards); Val Chalmers, Emma Chalmers (vocals); Russell Bell (guitar); Chris Payne (viola, keyboards); Nick Davies (bass); Greg Brimstone (drums). Recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, England on September 25 & 26, 1987. Includes liner notes by Rod Reynolds. One of many Gary Numan live albums, including several historic ones featuring his original postpunk band Tubeway Army, GHOST was recorded in 1987 during the European "Exhibition" tour. This two-disc, 19-track collection features a well-chosen song list slightly weighted towards newer material at the expense of better-known early songs. That said, Numan does include a good smattering of early hits, including "Down In the Park," "Me, I Disconnect From You," "I Die, You Die," and of course, his two signature songs "Are Friends Electric?" and "Cars." Newer material like "Berserker," "We Are Glass," and "WeTake Mystery to Bed" sounds slightly fresher, but overall, it's a well-played, spirited collection. Not bad for someone who claimed early in his career that he would stop touring forever due to stage fright. SKU: 1081812

American Idol Vol.2 (Series 2 - All Time Classic American Love Songs) [ECD]
Full title: American Idol Season 2: All-Time Classic American Love Songs. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The wildly successful TV show AMERICAN IDOL continues to be a source of material for hit albums. After the initial AMERICAN IDOL disc, and the solo debut of IDOL winner Kelly Clarkson, you'd think that might be the end of the story. What should come sauntering along to prove you wrong but the SEASON 2 disc, featuring another round of well-scrubbed, perfectly pitched young vocalists bent on winning the hearts and ears of the US, whether you're watching them on TVor just listening to them on the stereo or radio. There's a theme to this collection: classic love songs. Accordingly, Ruben Studdard delivers an impassioned version of the Carpenters' "Superstar," Kimberly Caldwell lays her sensuous pipes on the Roberta Flack hit "Killing Me Softly," and Corey Clark takes a trip into '80s power-ballad territory with a full-bore take on Journey's lighters-aloft smash "Open Arms." At first listen, it's hard to figure where the bonus cut, Lee Greenwood's country flag-waver "God Bless the U.S.A." fits into the concept, but that's presumably where the "American" part of the show's name comes in. Perseverance
Hatebreed includes: Jamey Jasta (vocals); Lou "Butcher" Richards, Sean Martin (guitar);Chris "The Xmas Bitch" Beattie (bass); Matt Byrne (drums). Additional personnel include: Kerry King, Jonathan Donais, Paul Romanko. Recorded at Long View Farm Studios, North Brookfield, Massachusetts. The New Haven, CT metallists never give up, as evidenced here on PERSEVERANCE, their third full-length album. They've further refined their sound--the guttural vocals are more full-throated, the tempos more breakneck, the lyrics just as extreme--all of which points to their second decade proving as tumultuous as their first. Hatebreed's no-frills, breakneck, double kick-drum propelled, back-to-basics approach is just as much in evidence here as it was on their debut, 1997's SATISFACTION IS THE DEATH OF DESIRE. Songs such as "A Call for Blood" and the tom-tom driven "Bloodsoaked Memories" remain almost as timeless as a Bram Stoker novel, with the same illicit, chilling effect, while "Hollow Ground" ("all that you cherish, all that you love, in the blink of an eye can be taken from you...") has particular resonance in a modern world rife with both random and premeditated violence. PERSEVERANCE is another roar from the crypt from these master exponents of the speed metal genre. SKU: 1071636

Peace Beyond Passion
Personnel includes: Me'Shell NdegeOcello (vocals, various instruments); Wendy Melvoin (acoustic guitar, guitar); Wah Wah Watson (acoustic & electric guitars); Allen Cato, David Fiuczynski (guitar); Bennie Maupin (bass clarinet); Joshua Redman (tenor saxophone, saxophone, horns); Federico Gonzalez Pena (Fender Rhodes electric piano, percussion); Billy Preston (organ); Oliver Gene Lake (drums); David Gamson (drums, drum programming); Daniel Sadownick, Luis Conte (percussion). Engineers: Rail Jon Rogut, David Gamson, Charles Nasser (tracks 1-3, 5-12); Michael Krowiak(track 4). PEACE BEYOND PASSION was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. On her second album, Me'Shell NdegeOcello continues to use a seamless blend of funk, jazz, rap and soul as a bed for her sociosexual observations. There's a spiritual bent, as well, to PEACE BEYOND PASSION, in songs that take on racism, homophobia and other societal ills. The centerpieces of the album are three songs named for books of the Bible: "Deuteronomy: Niggerman," "Ecclesiastes: Free My Heart" and "Leviticus: Faggot." The music is less hip-hop-oriented than that on her debut, PLANTATION LULLABIES, and fleshed-out with heavier jazz nuances and '70s funk shadings. It's helped along in those directions by saxophonist Joshua Redman (he played on the debut, too) and one-time Prince guitarist Wendy Melvoin. Their interplay with NdegeOcello, who swings confidently on bass, blurs many musical lines. NdegeOcello adds a Curtis Mayfield soul spin to a version of Bill Withers' "Who Is He And And What Is He To You," the one cover song here. Chunks of wah-wah guitar juice the beat along, while Paul Riser's aggressive string arrangement and Billy Preston's organ ensure the authenticity of this reading. SKU: 1004072

Eye To Eye
Scorpions: Klaus Meine (vocals); Mathias Jabs (acoustic, electric & slide guitars, mandolin); Rudolf Schenker (acoustic & electric guitars, sitar, background vocals); Ralph Rieckermann (bass, background vocals); James Kottak (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Mick Jones (acoustic guitar); Peter Wolf (piano, keyboards); Herman Rarebell (background vocals). Airway Allstars: Siedah Garrett, Michelle Wolf, Lynn Davis, James Ingram, Phil Perry, Kevin Dorsey (background vocals). Engineers include: A.T., Christian Leitgeb, Paul Ericksen. Teutonic terrors Scorpions return with EYE TO EYE, their first album for Koch Records. The band retains the crunchy hard rock style that has kept it potent since the '70s and adds a contemporary commercial touch that proves Scorpions are not living inthe past. "Mysterious" and "To be No.1" kick off the album, and both may raise the eyebrows of longtime fans. These excellent tunes contain beats and loops-a first for the group. The latter is the first single, with a video spoofing the Clinton/Lewinsky affair. The slower groove of "Obsession" is primed for radio airplay. "Mind Like a Tree" shows the group trading its lightning fast licks for a more plodding, Soungarden-ish feel. "What U Give you get Back" is an acoustic number showcasing the fine vocal talents of Klause Meine. The album closing "A Moment in a Million Years" features Peter Wolf on piano, another sign of maturity for a band labeled as heavy metal its entire career. EYE TO EYE rocks hard while venturing into uncharted pop territories. Scorpions keep current without selling out, and veteran fans will have a newfound respect for the band after multiple listens. Technique
New Order: Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar); Gillian Gilbert (keyboards, synthesizer); Peter Hook (bass); Stephen Morris (drums, background vocals). Following the critical dismissal of their previous record, BROTHERHOOD, New Order was at something of a crossroads in their career. TECHNIQUE (1989) found them back in favor as antecedents to a pair of oddly related trends: songs about the British tradition of holidays in Spain, and acid-house music. The first of these trends was adopted by everyone from Blur to the Pet Shop Boys. As for the second, while vacationing in Ibiza, a Spanish island inthe Mediterranean, the band was impressed by a fleeting dance style then prevalent in the clubs there. TECHNIQUE was the band's own take on that sound, and eventually, this adaptation became one of the touchstones of acid-house music. The album is an effective mix of strange, sampled sounds (something at which the band had always excelled), propulsive beats, and Bernard Sumner's ever-improving vocal style. "Fine Time," "Round & Round," and "Mr. Disco" are New Order at their most assertive, while "All the Way" and "Love Less" show their more pop-oriented side. The album's standout track "Run" sounds as though the band had rediscovered the power of simple bursts of guitar, with searing solos cutting into the smooth beats. SKU: 1003094

I Remember Miles
Personnel: Shirley Horn (vocals, piano); Roy Hargrove (trumpet, flugelhorn); Toots Thielemans (harmonica); Charles Ables, Ron Carter (bass); Steve Williams, Al Foster (drums). Recorded at Clinton Recording Studios, New York, New York from December 2-5, 1997. I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made. Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she explains in the liner notes, Davis liked her to sing ballads, and ballads areHorn's specialty. She can slow down time in a unique and spellbinding way. Her sultry and smoky vocals are intimate and conversational, relying on odd metered timing and silence, rather than volume, to make an emotional point. This album's knock out punch is the epic (over 10 minutes long) "My Man's Gone Now" performed in an uncharacteristically (for Horn) abstract style with a double rhythm section and Roy Hargrove wailing and soaring on the trumpet. This may well be one of the greatest tracks Horn ever recorded. SKU: 1004388

Weekend
Personnel includes: Kenny Lattimore, Shanice (vocals); Troy Taylor, Shep Crawford, Travon Potts (various instruments); Raphael Saadiq (guitar, bass); Christopher "Pops" Crawford, Terence Elliott (guitar); George Duke (piano); Andre Harris (Fender Rhodes piano); Jerry Peters (Hammond B-3 organ); Battlecat, Reed Vertelney (keyboards, programming); Oliver Reed, Daniel Crawford (keyboards); Derrick Hodge, Reggie Hamilton (bass); Vidal Davis (drums); M.B. Gordy (percussion); Silky, Marc Nelson (background vocals). Producers include: Troy Taylor, Charles Farrar, Raphael Saadiq, Battlecat, Andre Harris. Engineers include: Hernan Santiago, Danny Romero, Vidal Davis. The first thing that strikes you about Kenny Lattimore's WEEKEND is the production; cliche-free, constantly surprising, and most important, consistently funky. As the album's co-producer, Lattimore deserves the lion's share of credit for that. But the real star of this release is not the admittedly impressive arrangements, but the voice they exist to frame. Exhuding anunforced soulfulness, Lattimore has clearly learned his lessons well. He never pushes things over the top, but he retains a quiet insistence throughout the entirety of WEEKEND, even when he's crooning a romantic ballad. His smooth voice never gets too sugary, and the over-singing that's the pitfall of so many contemporary R&B singers is not a concern for Lattimore. If you're looking for a modern R&B album that's neither retro nor flavor-of-the-month, you could do a lot worse than give WEEKEND a shot. SKU: 1068225

Outside
Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, saxophone, keyboards); Reeves Gabrels, Carlos Alomar, Tom Frish, Kevin Armstrong (guitar); Mike Garson (piano); Erdal Kizilcay (keyboards, bass); Brian Eno (synthesizer); Yossi Fine (bass); Sterling Campbell, Joey Baron (drums); Bryony, Lola, Josey, Ruby Edwards (background vocals). Recorded at Mountain Studios, Switzerland. In the cyber-drenched 1990s, David Bowie once again proves himself ahead of the game. OUTSIDE is more a monumental collage of techno-war coldness than a mere album. Bowie combines the most essential pieces of each of his previous personas and musical styles to make OUTSIDE into an all-too-dense song-cycle with a story-line. Sound-wise, it is a closer musical approximation of "industrial" noise than the throbbing tones created by most young guns half his age. OUTSIDE begins with the premise that the action is taking place here and now ("not tomorrow"), in a fading industrial town in New Jersey, circa 1995. A place thatis littered with characters facing inhuman desperation as "rejects from the world-wide internet," making plans to "lease the moon" above their shop. Musically, Bowie reaches for the same densely evocative landscapes that make OUTSIDE's themes so disconcertingly real. A perverse mish-mash of booming classical piano trills loop in and out of machine-like drums and Bowie's schizophrenic monologues. Through the different characters we see the horrible truths of our dying culture--romance, for instance, is brought down with the admission, "if there was only something between us...besides our clothes." OUTSIDE is happening right now, right here. SKU: 6534278

Labour Of Love (The Music Of Nick Lowe)
Includes liner notes by Bill Bentley. Though his songs have been covered by others over the years (everyone from pal Elvis Costello to US soul-popster Curtis Stigers), pop poet Nick Lowe is generally thought of more as a recording artist than as a source of material for others. As this tribute album proves, however, Lowe's blend of soul, pop, rock, and country is infinitely adaptable to the approaches of other artists.
