Collins, the avatar of '80s and '90s nice-guy pop, has endeared himself to millions with his earnest lyrics, lavish arrangements and guy-next-door persona. On DANCE INTO THE LIGHT, he goes worldwide, at least in a musical way. With its prominent African influence, DANCE INTO THE LIGHT represents Collins' first foray outside his American pop and R&B roots. Here, Collins' hook-laden pop takes a back seat to a more worldbeat-oriented sound. One gets the impression he's been holed up with GRACELAND and the complete works of former Genesis bandmate Peter Gabriel for the last year.
The rhythms, horn lines and offhand lyrics of "Wear My Hat" recall Paul Simon's "I Know What I Know,"while his cover of Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'" sounds like a combination of Gabriel's "Biko" and "Solsbury Hill." Collins maintains an overall sound consistent with his previous albums, but the focus has shifted from melody to groove. The supple polyrhythms of the title cut find him working hard to disprove the title of his old Genesis hit "I Can't Dance."

Before vocalist Chris Cornell (ex-Soundgarden) joined forces with the displaced instrumentalists of Rage Against the Machine to form Audioslave, RATM were among the most revered acts in heavy rock. The band has since faded into the annals of rock history, having left an indelible mark, and their unmistakable sound has often been copied but never duplicated. This live album (originally planned as a two-disc set with the cover album RENEGADES), harnesses the energy and raw emotion that was an RATM concert, centered around Zach de la Rocha's unabashed social commentary, via stylish and oftenpoetic rhyming.
On these 2000 performances, classic tracks were imbued with Zach's timely worldview, as "Killing in the Name" has its famous mantra morphed to "some of those that burn crosses/are the same that hold office," while the band precisely pummels its instruments. On "Freedom" (originally written to champion the cause of Leonard Peltier), de la Rocha chants "Free Mumia," in reference to his support of Mumia Abu-Jamal. LIVE is a final testament to the greatness of this groundbreaking group, having special significance as the final performances of RATM, recorded in the band's hometown of Los Angeles.

Following Eric Clapton's departure after the magnificent Bluesbreakers album, Mayall plugged the gap with Peter Green. Little did anyone know (except Green) that he would almost equal Clapton in the minds of fans and the cogniscenti. Two instrumentals on this collection, Freddie King's "The Stumble" and Green's "The Super-Natural", clearly demonstrate the clean sound of his Gibson Les Paul. The line-up is completed by bassistJohn McVie and Aynsley Dunbar on drums. Ex-commercial artist Mayall also designed and painted the cover, which itself is a fine piece of art-work and is probably rotting in some printer's basement, long forgotten. During the brief three years that Cream was together, it set the standard for future blues-rock power trios by redefining the role of each corner of this musical triangle. While the traditional route was to have only the guitarist take a solo, the instrumental prowess of both Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce meant that a degree of improvisation was possible from all corners. Nowhere was this more evident than in a live setting as ably demonstrated by the four performances included on LIVE CREAM.
Taken from some 1968 dates recorded at Winterland and Fillmore West, Clapton, Bruce and Baker all play with a ferocity that makes Jack Bruce's ten-minute version of "N.S.U." fly by. Bruce's other collaborations with co-writer Janet Godfrey, "Sleepy Time Time" and "Sweet Wine" show off his honeyed singing style while allowing Clapton to indulge his blues jones and Cream to flex its improvisational muscle. Coupled with a straight reading of Muddy Waters' "Rollin' And Tumblin'" taken from a Fillmore West performance is a previously unreleased studio recording of the traditional "Lawdy Mama" later re-written as "Strange Brew," a Cream original.

Ralph Stanley and producer BilVornDick assembled a small galaxy of musical stars to make CLINCH MOUNTAIN COUNTRY one of the biggest all-star bluegrass recording sessions ever. The list of performers reads as a Who's Who that stretches the gamut of American pop music, including George Jones, Bob Dylan, Marty Stuart, Vince Gill, Dwight Yoakam, BR5-49, Gillian Welch and others.
This two-disc collection of bluegrass standards is lovingly performed by artists who have clearly been influenced--even defined--by Ralph Stanley's legacy. (Many consider Stanley to be the heart of soul of bluegrass music.) There are plenty of stellar performances on CLINCH MOUNTAIN COUNTRY. Patty Loveless turns in an excellent version of the chilling, traditional murder ballad, "Pretty Polly," while Porter Wagoner offers a splendid rendition of "The White Dove," a Carter Stanley song that Wagoner first sang as a child. But perhaps the most memorable tracks on this excellent document of a bluegrass legend are "Thy Burdens Are Greater Than Mine" and "My Deceitful Heart," where Stanley and his son, Ralph Stanley II, share vocals.

Though it's probably one of their least-acclaimed albums, OCTOBER is where it all began to come together for U2. The youthful exuberance they demonstrated on BOY was now a given, but for this, their second album, the conceptual end of thingsbegan to coalesce as well. The Edge had begun to expand his sonic palette, and the heavily-effected approach that he would rely on for the next several years came to full fruition here. There's further development of the bold, anthemic approach that would come to characterize the band's arrangements, and the songwriting is just plain better. Most affecting, and indicative of the group's progress is the emotional epic "Gloria," full of resounding major chords and throbbing rhythms, it's simultaneously an open admission of self-doubt and a call to arms to embrace life's uncertainties. This contrast is what makes OCTOBER, along with much of U2's early work, so effective.

The third album from EPMD, BUSINESS AS USUAL, is the duo's most aptly titled album ever. In 1991, when the album was originally released, EPMD was making a solid claim at becoming one of hip-hop's greatest acts. After two straight gold albums and an ever-growing fan base, BUSINESS AS USUAL could not have been released with better timing. Hard-core tracks such as "I'm Mad,""Gold Digger," and "Manslaughter" firmly entrenched EPMD at the top of the hip-hop food chain. Following in the footsteps of his idol Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster's corpus of work has stood up to the test of time. His lyrical sound has made him one of the great tenor saxophone masters in jazz history. On MUSIC FOR LOVING, Webster plays mostly ballads, the style in which Webster feels most comfortable and sounds best. His smoky, romantic sound is perfect for tunes such as "Prelude to a Kiss" and "(I Don't Stand) a Ghost of a Chance (With You)."
MUSIC FOR LOVING (recorded in 1954-1955) is a two-CD set featuring accompaniment by a lush string section with arrangements by Ralph Burns. After the success of their first two albums (IN THE CITY and THIS IS THE MODERN WORLD) within the span of barely a year-and-a-half, the Jam was not as pleased as it should have been. They had been extremely successful, but clearly the band (especially Weller), was chafing at being pigeonholed as "mod" revivalists.While the Jam's first two albums were clearly influenced by the mod movement of the early '60s, Weller was far too clever a songwriter to stick to the limitations of any one genre. ALL MOD CONS is the sound not just of an English youth movement, but of an English musical tradition of literate songcraft epitomized by writers such as Ray Davies of the Kinks, whose classic song "David Watts" is covered here.
Weller's usual bombast is herein subsumed by gentler, more rhapsodic concerns, and he even manages a credibly gentle love balled in "English Rose." Of course the band still offers its share of unadulterated "rock" songs, but on ALL THE MOD CONS the lyrics are more likely to address the problems of English racism ("Down In The Tube Station At Midnight") than simple boy-girl dilemmas. This album marks the maturation of a brilliant songwriter.

In the late '80s, both Van Halen and David Lee Roth were at their commercial peaks, with the two camps competing fiercely against each other for Top 10 dominance. While lacking the overall crunch of earlier albums, OU812 does take the band into credible pop/electronic territory. Showing that party rock can grow and develop, the album contains some premium musicianship.
"Mine All Mine" features Ed Van Halen's continued use of synthesizers and is an introspective tune about believing in one's self. "When It's Love" is a catchy power ballad that continued the band's streak of Top 10 hits, along with "Finish What Ya Started," with its good-natured country licks. "Feels So Good," a 180-degree turn from the heavy rock of the band's early days, is a keyboard-driven pop ditty. The band doesn't totally stray from itsroots though, as "Black And Blue" is a greasy, bluesy salute to an active sex life.

John Fogerty and his bandmates were remarkably prolific, achieving more between 1969 and 1971 than most groups do in decades. By the timethis document of their 1971 European tour was recorded, the seemingly unstoppable hit machine of CCR was beginning to slow down, and ultimately wouldn't make it to the next year. This then, is one of the band's final moments of glory. Virtually all of the group's hits are here, from the Chuck Berryesque "Travelin' Band" to the righteous anger of "Fortunate Son" and the rootsy fatalism of "Bad Moon Rising." Outside the studio confines, the bands roots rock is even rawer, with Fogerty wailing like a bluesy banshee and Doug Clifford and Stu Cook bashing out the rhythm like there was no tomorrow. Unfortunately for all of us, there wasn't.

More than 30 years after these tracks were recorded, the MIRROR MAN SESSIONS are finally being released in the manner of Don Van Vliet's original vision. Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band were always going through personnel changes, but the group was especially in flux during 1967. SAFE AS MILK had just been issued, and the band began recording a follow-up, planned as a double-album. But the following year saw the Captain and his Band dropped by their label (Buddah).
Some of the slated songs (supplemented with electronic effects) became STRICTLY PERSONAL, released byBlue Thumb Records. Buddah followed suit, venturing into its vaults, choosing four extended songs, and packaging them as MIRROR MAN-obscuring facts by billing the album as "live recordings from 1965." This reissue adds five additional numbers, all of which show the band at an evolutionary point midway between the delta blues of its first recordings and the layered rhythmic stew of TROUT MASK REPLICA. THE MIRROR MAN SESSIONS is an essential document of an important ensemble.

Peter Murphy's 1989 solo album gained him an even wider audience. Aided by the boom in alternative radio outlets, Murphy reached a demographic too young toremember his old band, Bauhaus. Luckily, this exposure was not wasted, as DEEP delivers the goods.
Continuing in Murphy's usual dramatic and melodic style, "Marlene Dietrich's Favorite Poem" provides DEEP with a new romantic flair. Surprisingly radio-friendly, "Cuts You Up" and "A Strange Kind of Love" rival the pop genius of "Indigo Eyes." There are some harder tracks here, too--"The Line Between the Devil's Teeth" howls and screeches in Bauhaus style, while "Roll Call" and its "Reprise" show Murphy experimenting with tribal house beats and gothic/eastern samples. Compiled from Davis' famous BIRTH OF THE COOL recording sessions, as well as three mid-1950's Blue Note sessions and the 1958 SOMETHIN' ELSE session with Cannonball Adderly, BALLADS & BLUES illustrates the fresh new sound Davis was moving on to around the time bebop was coming to an end. These songs are pulled out of context (they were originally grouped with more up-tempo bebop tunes) to illustrate their newness as well as Davis' developing artistry on his trumpet.
By the end of the 1950s, his style would come to epitomize a sophisticated kind of cool. The songs have slow tempos and wide spaces for Davis to play with, especially 1950's "Moon Dreams," which features an orchestra's worth of brass accompanying Davis, and Davis' classic "Weirdo."

L.D. 50 is the scientific measurement used to determine the relative lethal dosage of a toxic substance. Thus, it's an entirely appropriate title for the major-label debut of these decidedly toxic troublemakers.
While these heavy rockers churn out gut-wrenching guitar riffs, pounding drumbeats, and snarling vocals aplenty, they'refar from humorless. The pulverizing effect of their sonic attack is undeniable, but they're essentially clowns at heart. This is discernible not only in their Kiss-in-the-21st century makeup, but also in the light-hearted sci-fi themes that crop up, as on the 2001-inspired "Monolith." And while Mudvayne charges fiercely enough to give any grindcore band a run for its money, they incorporate enough interesting electronic production touches to keep L.D. 50 from ever getting aurally monotonous.
