House Full (Live At The LA Troubadour/Remastered)
Fairport Convention: Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar, dulcimer); Simon Nicol (vocals, mandolin); Dave Swarbrick (vocals, violin); Dave Pegg (bass, mandolin); Dave Mattacks (drums). Recorded live at The Troubadour,Los Angeles, California on September 4, 5, and 6, 1970. 1970 found Fairport Convention reduced to a quartet after the departure of their singer Sandy Denny. They decided not to replace her and recorded FULL HOUSE, a ferocious blend of high intensity rock dynamics with traditional British Isle fiddle-filled forms. With accolades accumulating for both FULL HOUSE and its predecessor, the beloved LEIGE AND LEIF, another tour of America was mounted in the late summer. HOUSE FULL was recorded in Los Angeles at the Troubador. A fine companion piece to its alternately-ordered namesake, these eight songs are a revamped set of the live album released only in the UK. The line-up of the band is extremely impressive, but it was not to last. Richard Thompson left the following year before another studio album was made. SKU: 1067975

Up
UP! includes 2 CDs: a "red" disc featuring a pop-electric mix plus a second "green" disc featuring a country-acoustic mix of the same tracks. Personnel includes: Shania Twain (vocals); Jon Willis (acoustic guitar, banjo, bouzouki, mandolin); Heitor Perreira (acoustic, electric & Spanish guitar, mandolin); Michael Thompson (electric guitar, slide guitar, bouzouki); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Cory Churko (slide guitar); Paul Franklin (pedal steel); Jonathan Yudkin (mandolin, violin, cello); Irish Film Orchestra, The Leahy's (strings); Simon & Diamond Duggal (percussion). Includes liner notes by Shania Twain. UP! marks Shania Twain's emergence from a five-year hiatus that found her absconding to Switzerland and having a child with husband/producer/collaborator Robert "Mutt" Lange. As ever, Twain continues to be the master of the pop crossover. This time around, she takes 19 songs presents two different versions of each, divided between a pair of discs. CD 1 (the "Red CD") features more rock-flavored versions asopposed to CD2 (the "Green CD"), which includes considerably more pedal steel guitar et al. Regardless of the genre, Twain and Lange continue to make a formidable pop-writing team. The two manage to craft catchy cuts on topics ranging from mundane situations in a relationship like who's behind the wheel (the sassy "In My Car [I'll Be The Driver]") to weightier fare like rampant materialism (a mechanized "Ka-Ching!") and female empowerment (the soaring "She's Not Just A Pretty Face"). Otherwise, Twain tills the fertile nuances of romance via convincing balladry that touches on dalliances with the green-eyed devil (a heartfelt "I'm Jealous") and rock-solid pledges of fidelity (an ethereal "Forever And For Always") guaranteed to be 2003's quintessential wedding song. Spooky
Lush: Miki Berenyi, Emma Anderson (vocals, guitar); Steve Rippon (bass); Chris Acland (drums). Recorded at September Sound, London from July to October, 1991. Lush's first true album, SPOOKY, released in 1991 on the heels of GALA, is probably the band's most consistent effort, and arguably the embodiment of late 20th century dream pop. Produced by Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrie, the music owes a debt to those archetypal shoegazers, yet travels along its own particular path. Lush owes much of its distinctiveness to the defiantyet melodically angelic voice of Miki Berenyi, which floats effortlessly over Emma Anderson's enchanting, ethereal guitar noodlings, Steve Rippon's subtly soothing basslines and Chris Ackland's insistent drumming. These elements unite in an impressive one-two punch of pop bliss early on in SPOOKY, in tracks such as the breezily beguiling "Nothing Natural," and the gentle and charming "Tiny Smiles." There's a burst of power pop with the insanely catchy "Superblast!" before SPOOKY closes with "Monochrome," a simple adult lullaby with a mesmerizing melody, adorned with sparkling guitar spirals and hypnotic vocals. Overall, SPOOKY stands as a remarkable coming-of-age for a principal band in the dream pop canon. SKU: 1003779

Press To Play
Personnel: Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Eric Stewart, Pete Townshend, Jerry Marotta, Carlos Alomar, Eddie Rayner, Nick Glennie-Smith, Dick Morissey, Ray Cooper, Simon Chamberlain, GrahamWard, Lenny Pickett, Gary Barnacle, Gavin Wright, John Bradbury, Linda McCartney, Eric Stewart, Kate Robbins, Ruby James, James McCartney, Eddie Klein, John Hammel, Matt Howe, Steve Jackson. All songs written or co-written by Paul McCartney. Opening with the gentle rhythm guitars, slap-back reverb vocals and clean-sounding horns of "Stranglehold," Paul McCartney's PRESS TO PLAY is an exercise in straightforward, feel-good pop music, as only McCartney can do it--sincere in a way you wouldn't buy from too many songwriters. Filled with sonic strokes that might stain the record of a lesser artist, PRESS TO PLAY rises above its now-quaint sounding atmosphere to even further show off McCartney's pure, transcendent gift. The production of PRESS TO PLAY is a sign of the times-- tight, compressed sounds dominate, gated reverb and heavy chorus guitar (courtesy of the nimble-fingered Carlos Alomar, among others) are but a few of the eighties trademarks which define its sound. What's timeless, though, is McCartney's still-staggering gift for melodic invention. The essence of simplicity, his every note is perfectly placed, from the off-kilter "Talk More Talk" (which even includes Simmons drums!) to the meditative throb of "Pretty Little Head." "Only Love Remains," the album's stand-out, is McCartney at his best--heartbreaking chord changes and sweet melody give way to sweeping orchestration and a huge, infectious refain. SKU: 1000253

Singles Collection, The
Personnel: Terje Rypdal (guitar); Allan Dangerfield (keyboards, Synclavier); Bjorn Kjellemyr (bass); Audun Kleive (drums). Recorded at Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway in August 1988. Includes liner notes by Steve Lake. The title is partly intended in jest, none of these ten songs were actually singles. However, Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal with his young band the Chasers, is at his most hook-filled rocking here. Recorded in 1988 and released the following year, this is the most successful of his several albums with the tight little combo (other titles were the two previous releases, CHASER and BLUE). Rypdal's playing, whiling recalling Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck, also is rich with the funky and jagged riffing associated with Miles Davis's seventies recordings. The rhythm section of Audun Kleive and Bjorn Kjellemer are powerful and relentless (listen to "Sprott" and be convinced). The keyboard textures provided by Allan Dangerfield add depth and atmosphere, and he alsowrote two of the albums pieces, including the hallucenogenic "Strange Behaviour." Rypdal has presented his music in numerous different directions over the years. THE SINGLES COLLECTION is an essential glimpse of him at his most supercharged and electric. SKU: 1009413

Mer De Noms
A Perfect Circle: Maynard James Keenan (vocals, gourd); Billy Howerdel (guitar, piano, bass, programming, background vocals); Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar); Paz Lanchantin (violin, bass, background vocals); Josh Freese (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Luciano Lenchantin (viola); Tim Alexander (drums); Draven Godwin (percussion); Keli Shafer (background vocals). Engineers include: Billy Howerdel, Frank Grymer, Critter. Recorded at Perfect Circle Studios, Exstacy and The Chop Shop, Hollywood, California; Sound City, Van Nuys, California. Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan offers up something to fill the collective void of fans eagerly awaiting a follow up to AENIMA. Keenan teamed with Tool guitar tech andA Perfect Circle guitarist/composer Billy Howerdel for MER DE NOMS, which is both a band effort and an engaging hard rock album, recorded while Tool renegotiated with their label and other band members took a break. But don't be fooled; A Perfect Circle is more than a one-off side project. The band isn't nearly as brutal as Tool; the musical textures are instead spacious and melodic. Keenan maintains his brooding, emotionally charged vocal style and his knack for conjuring bleak imagery. The track most comparable to Tool's music, "Rose," utilizes rise-and-fall dynamics and unpredictably breaks away to gentle strings, while "Judith" (the album's title is French for "sea of names," hence the song titles), explores free thought and warns against blind faith, and "Orestes" departs from the predominant guitar distortion with moody, powerful results. Can't Buy A Thrill
Cassette available on MCA (1591). Also available with "Countdown To Ecstacy" on 1 cassette. NOTES: Steely Dan: Donald Fagen (vocals, piano, electric piano, plastic organ); Walter Becker (vocals, bass); David Palmer (vocals); Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (guitar, pedal steel guitar); Denny Dias (guitar, electric sitar); Jim Hoder (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Elliott Randall (guitar); Jerome Richardson (tenor saxophone); Snooky Young (flugelhorn); Victor Feldman (percussion); Clydie King, Shirley Mathews, Venetta Fields (background vocals). Producer: Gary Katz. Reissue producers: Walter Becker, Donald Fagen. Recorded at The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Walter Becker, Donald Fagen & TristanFabriani. Digitally remastered by Roger Nichols (Riversound Studios). Even the debut from Becker and Fagen put them stylistically a cut above the others. Played alongside the Doobie Brothers and the Eagles on smooth FM radio, Steely Dan were linked immediately to the west coast music scene, a fact that was utterly wrong. This was and is, an east coast album; it is also assured, laid-back and layered with the jazz and soul influences that made their special kind of rock. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter added the metal and David Palmer added pop vocal - but, from this sparkling debut we can clearly see Becker and Fagen in immaculate control. "Do It Again" is of course, a diamond. 100% Colombian
With their sophomore release, 100% COLOMBIAN, Fun Lovin' Criminals leave behind the Tarantino-esque sounds oftheir debut release for a more harmonious, soulful, Superfly-vibe that sounds like a '70s movie soundtrack. Always groovy, the album shines with funky, yet mellow musical textures, while continuing to have the humorous feel that defines the Fun Lovin' Criminals. Check out the fun-filled "Big Night Out," the guitar riffs of "Korean Bodega" and the ode to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, "Southside." Filled with clever, witty lyrics, 100% COLOMBIAN is also packed with cool '70s vintage keyboards and the edge that Criminal fans have come to enjoy. A track that deserves more than your average attention is "Love Unlimited," the group's tribute to super-soul singer Barry White. Other songs that stand out are "Back On The Block," "10th Street" and the slow, laid-back "We Are All Very Worried About You." Though different from their previous album, 100% COLOMBIAN does not disappoint. SKU: 1004678

Peace And Noise
Personnel: Patti Smith (vocals, clarinet); Lenny Kaye (acoustic, electric & pedal steel guitars, bass); Oliver Ray (acoustic & electric guitars); J. D. Daugherty (harmonica, organ, bass, drums); Tony Shanahan (piano, bass, drums); Michael Stipe (background vocals). Recordedat Iiwii Studio, Weehawken, New Jersey. Includes liner notes by Patti Smith. "1959" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. One of the most important figures of the musical revolution of the late '70s, Patti Smith later went into a self-imposed exile, returning to form after nearly a decade with 1996's GONE AGAIN. On PEACE AND NOISE, she proves that the comeback was no fluke. While themes of death and loss pervade, Smith tries to make sense of it all. On "1959" she take a nostalgic look at a turning point in our cultural history, continuing the lesson with "Spell," an excerpt from Ginsberg's Howl read over a bed of acoustic guitars and strings. On "Dead City," Smith mourns the economic death of Detroit, working a proletarian fury worthy of her late husband Fred's Detroit proto-punk band MC5. This sentiment is furthered on "Blue Poles," a powerful ballad of a family losing hope in the Dust Bowl. Where GONE AGAIN served as the document of one woman's loss, PEACE AND NOISE finds the godmother of punk taking a parental view; looking at the world her children (both biological and spiritual) have inherited, and she's flying the flag of discontent for a whole new generation. Blur: Damon Albarn (vocals, recorder, Hammond organ, harpsichord, melodica, keyboards, Moog synthesizer, vibraphone, programming); Alex James (vocals, bass); Graham Coxon (acoustic & electric guitars, clarinet, saxophone, percussion, background vocals); Stephen Street (keyboards, programming); David Rowntree (drums, percussion, programming). Additional personnel: Phil Daniels, Laetitia Sadier (vocals); Louisa Fuller, Rick Koster, Mark Pharoah (violin); John Metcalfe (viola); Ivan McCready (cello); Chris Tombling, Audrey Riley, Leo Payne, Chris Pitsillides (strings); Simon Clarke (flute, alto & baritone saxophones); Stephen Hague (accordion); Tim Sanders (soprano & tenor saxophones, trombone); Roddy Lorimer (flugelhorn, trombone); Richard Edwards, Neil Sidwell (trombone). Producers: Stephen Street, Stephen Hague, John Smith, Blur. Recorded at Maison Rouge & Rak Studios, London, England from November 1993-January 1994. After many decades of rock, there's an equation that still holds true--there's only twelve major chords to choose from. And if you listened to the British rock press, you'd think that they invented them. Wedged in between retro and revisionist sits Blur. Wearing the hat of a Ray Davies-type sociologist, Blur's Damon Albarn weaves tales of modern London laced with the suspicion that indeed, the empire HAS ended. Albarn's fascination with urban decay was apparent on MODERN LIFE IS RUBBISH, but with the followup PARKLIFE, Blur embraces the modern. During the instrumentals, PARKLIFE plays like a surreal game show. Layering theaesthetic of the 1980s film "Brazil" with the Kinks' "David Watts," Blur is quite possibly the new British hope. While Blur emerged from the same fertile, neo-glam soil as Suede (Albarn's girlfriend, Justine of Elastica, used to be Suede's rhythm guitarist), Blur is the king among the new British glams. The disco rhythms and keyboards in "Girls & Boys" highlight Albarn's cutesy look at romance in the 1990s. A climate where everyone is "looking for girls who want boys who like/Boys to be girls who do/Boys like their girls who do/Girls like their boys." Laments Albarn, "Oh I should be someone you really love." If it's solid pop songs with a bite you're craving, you'll love PARKLIFE. SKU: 1003663

MTV Unplugged
Solo performer: Lauryn Hill (vocals, acoustic guitar). Recorded in July 2001. "Mystery Of Iniquity" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Female Rap Solo Performance. Surviving controversy and delays, former Fugee Lauryn Hill's new material sees its long anticipated release in MTV UNPLUGGED 2.0. In a decidedly gutsy move, Hill follows up her Grammy-sweeping debut emerging as a woman reinvented; a folk soul diva if you will. Older, wiser, and finding comfort in unabashed honesty, Hill offers a performance that plays like both a sermon and a confessional. Her spoken interludes are as compelling as the set's 13 self-penned songs. Sans the "entourage" as she so wryly puts it, Hill sharesher new music in pretty much a solo-acoustic format. Though some tracks seem like works in progress, there are many simple, beautiful moments on UNPLUGGED 2.O. "Adam Lives In Theory" speaks to the struggle of men and women to reconcile their imperfections, while the repeating refrain in "Freedom Time" finds Hill feeling liberated from self-deception. Her jazzy fingerpicking sets the perfect mood for the bittersweet ballad "I Find It Hard To Say (Rebel)." In a heart-wrenching section of "I Gotta Find Peace Of Mind," Hill breaks into tears, wearing both her heart and her music on her sleeve. When Hill sings "that old me is left behind" with such raw passion, one can't help but believe her and admire the sentiment. SKU: 1072002

Emmerdale
This 1999 reissue of EMMERDALE includes a second bonus EP disc containing 4 tracks previously unavailable in the United States. The Cardigans: Peter Svensson (vocals, guitar, piano, vibraphone, bass, percussion, bells); Nina Persson (vocals); Lars-olof Johansson (acoustic guitar, piano); Bengt Lagerberg (bassoon, recorder, drums, percussion); Magnus Sveningsson (bass). Additional personnel: Magdalena Gratjova, David Ahlen (violin); Albert Eckerbom (viola); Anna-Maria Svensson (cello); Anders Nordgren (flute); Petter Lindgard (trumpet, flugelhorn); Tore Johansson (trumpet); Jens Lindgard (trombone); Ivan Bakran (piano). Initially released only in the band's native Sweden, The Cardigans' 1994debut, named after a British soap opera, is purely a pop delight. At first listen the songs sound as cheery and bouncy as the best in bubblegum pop, but there is an underlying melancholy never far from the music's perky surface. And as some of their titles might hint, songs like "Sick And Tired" and "Black Letter Day" are downright dark. The album's highest point is the intoxicating, purely joyful "Rise And Shine," though the Cardigans' brilliant cover of Black Sabbath's "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is a conceptual masterpiece. This Minty Fresh reissue contains a second disc of highlights from the original Swedish version of LIFE, not found on the reconfigured US edition, including the delightful "Pikebubbles" and the nearly 11-minute multipart operetta "Closing Time." Signs Of Life
Personnel includes: Martin Carthy; Eliza Carthy (fiddle); Chris Parkinson (harmonica). Recorded at Panda Sound, Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire, England. Includes liner notes by Martin Carthy. Given the late '90s success of Waterson:Carthy and Martin Carthy's seemingly endless schedule of live appearances, it is surprising that Carthy had time to enter the studio at Robin Hood's Bay to lay down an album of his own. But we are glad that he made theeffort, because SIGNS OF LIFE is a thoroughly satisfying collection of some of his favorite songs. On the traditional front, he revisits "The Deserter" to restore a superior last verse unavailable to him when he first recorded the song in 1961. Perhaps the best traditional arrangement here is "Sir Patrick Spens," one of four tracks on which daughter Eliza plays fiddle. She is also on the Bee Gees' "New York Mine Disaster, 1941" an inspired selection which works perfectly here. Other popular songs covered include "Heartbreak Hotel" and Hoagy Carmichael's "Hong Kong Blues," with Chris Parkinson on harmonica. SKU: 1009514

Personnel: J.J. Cale (vocals, guitar); Mac Grayden (slide guitar); Weldon Myrick (steel guitar); Buddy Spiker, Shorty Lavender (fiddle); Walter Haynes (dobro); Ed Colis (harmonica); David Briggs (piano, organ); Bob Wilson, Jerry Whitehurst (piano); Tim Drummond, Carl Radle, Norbert Putnam (bass); Karl Himmel, Chuck Browning (drums); Diane Davidson (background vocals). Engineers: James Long, Joe Mills, Jim Williamson. Recorded at Moss Rose Studio, Nashville, Tennessee on September 29-30, 1970 and at Bradley's Barn in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee on October 2-4, 1970 and June 9, 1971. NATURALLY has stood up over the years as a perfect debut. When released in 1971, it introduced J.J. Cale fully. In the decades since, this album, along with its follow-up, REALLY, have remained perfect entry points into Cale's laid-back grooves. His music is deceptively tricky--the surface textures pull you in like a restful chair, but the interlocking rhythmic base is full of subtle tugs and pulls that are far from standard-issue slow boogie. Cale's songs have also proven to havethe breadth to be covered by others, and this album includes the first appearances of both his "Call Me the Breeze" and "After Midnight" (a hit for Eric Clapton). A sterling cast of players (including Buddy Spicher, Carl Radle, David Briggs, Norbert Putnam, and Tim Drummond) backs Cale. NATURALLY is a perfect introduction to J.J. Cale's work. SKU: 1002315
