EDtv
Original score composed by Randy Edelman. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Upbeat and full of fun, this compilation soundtrack to the film "EDtv" moves from slow soul to hard rock to reggae. Bon Jovi gets it all moving with the apt pop wail, "Real Life," offering wishes for a life like in the movies and belt-outs like, "This is real life, these are real tears." Things later take a funkier turn on Barry White'ssmooth rendering of the Sly & The Family Stone classic, "Thank You" and Al Green's inviting "Here I Am." Soul brother #1 James Brown creates a more reflective moment with "That's Life." Elsewhere, Euro-reggae faves UB40 keep it groovy with "Holly Holy," and L.A.'s bad-ass Latin fusionists Ozomatli tear the roof off the sucka with "Como Ves." With something to offer almost everyone, this collection is an eclectic, energetic and extremely enjoyable grab-bag. SKU: 4113469

Joao Voz E Viola
Solo performer: Joao Gilberto (vocals, guitar). Recorded at Studio AR, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. JOAO VOZ E VIOLAO won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. A US release of new material by bossa nova master Joao Gilberto is like the appearance of a comet. It doesn't happen often, and when it does you'd be wise to pay close attention. Nearly a decade separates JOAO VOZ E VIOLAO from its predecessor, and thankfully little seems to have changed. Gilberto's voice and guitar possess the same purity that made his early-'60s recordings so unforgettable. Caetano Veloso, one of many Brazilian artists strongly influenced by Gilberto, achieves a production masterstroke here by the simple act of putting the man in the studio with only his own guitar for company. The result is themost directly affecting Joao Gilberto recording to reach American ears since bossa nova's heyday four decades prior. Unhampered by an intrusive string section or superflous studio players, Gilberto is free to pursue his quiet but forceful vision with undiluted focus. Nodding to his roots, he performs a couple of Jobim tunes, including the famed "Desafinado," and embraces the present by performing a number of Caetano Veloso compositions, even though these are clearly written with the classic bossa nova style in mind. JOAO VOZ E VIOLAO is the stuff of a Gilberto fan's dreams. SKU: 5085702

What We Do
Personnel: John Scofield (guitar); Joe Lovano (saxophone); Dennis Irwin (bass); Bill Stewart (drums). Recorded at Power Station, New York, New York in May 1992. What does the John Scofield Quartet do? WHAT WE DO is an album title that's as accurate as what they actually do is good. What they do is play--with time, space, melody, harmony, texture, and with each other. Showcasing Sco's talents as a band-leader, composer, arranger and guitarist, WHAT WE DO is a strong package of diverse tunes and sensitive, inspired performances. Scofield's approach is deceptively simple. Tunes and solos are logically constructed from short, easy ideas which are developed, mimicked, turned upside down and backwards, and echoed at weird times. In this respect, many of his songs--such as the frenetic "Call 911" and the bebop-ish "What They Did"--reflect the influence of Ornette Coleman, the champion of using such devices in jazz composition and improvisation. Yet to contrast these, Scofield includes things like the funky "Little Walk," the parodic "Camp Out" and blues-ish "Say The Word." His big, warm, beautiful tone stands out on the pensive ballad "Easy For You." The sounds he elicits from a lushly overdriven electricguitar are as unique and personal as his compositions. Perfect compliments to these sounds are Joe Lovano's rich tenor lines, and drummer Bill Stewart's sensitive touch. Stewart always adds just the right punctuation, bringing the song "Why Nogales" to new polyrhythmic dimensions. The overall group interplay is exemplary. Even though there are rarely more than three instruments playing at once, their use of space and communication make for a consistently full sound. SKU: 5047228

Load
Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Jason Newsted (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Producers: Bob Rock, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich. Recorded at The Plant Studios, Sausalito, California between May 1995 and February 1996. The kings of speed metal have never been keen on being labeled, and LOAD, which follows up the 1991 mega-hit METALLICA, is a surprising pastiche of sonic fury. Metallica still rocks hard. James Hetfield's lyrics are still full of venom and anger, and the music still could scare small children. But the band is ready to show off other sides of its craft. "Hero Of The Day" sounds like an R.E.M. song, albeit a heavy one, with its tender beginning and ending confluence of harmonized vocals and catchy guitar riffs. A dose of the blues can be heard in the slow-burning "Bleeding Me," and a downright country twang pervades "Mama Said." Still, thisis a metal album, and there are headbanging riffs o'plenty. LOAD may seem like a departure from the Metallica "norm," but it's actually what the band has been doing all along: writing well-crafted songs without a regard for what others think. The only difference is that the one-time denizens of the underground now have the world's rapt attention. SKU: 1003758

Stone Gon'
In Barry White's world, everything revolves around the sentiment of love. Giving love, receiving love, and spreading love, all set to a symphonic rhapsody of lush musical arrangements. These are the ingredients with which White has crafted a solid career spanning nearly three decades. STONE GON', his Top Twenty charting 1973 release, is soaked in that festival of love. Each song begins with at least three or four minutes of White's husky growl elaborating in spoken word about the love he has in his heart and how he would be lost without that special someone with whom to share it. In the five songs on the album, he sustains that romantic groove through almost 40 minutes of music. The opening song, "Girl It's True, Yes I'll Always Love You" begins with his trademark string section easing into a slow-jam as White professesendless dedication to his lady. "Honey Please, Can't Ya See," backed by his female vocal trio, Love Unlimited, is the singer's promise of ceaseless dedication. "You're My Baby" capitalizes on White's silky smooth lyrics letting his woman know that he'll be loving her always. The self-explanatory "Hard To Believe That I Found You" is filled with the wonder of the feelings at the start of a love affair. Ending the album is the Top Seven hit "Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up" which is the perfect Barry White song. Beginning with a space-age buildup coupled with White's moans, it eventually turns into a disco devotional that makes it difficult for listeners not to want to move to the beat of sticking to the one you love. It's Dark And Hell Is Hot [Remastered]
Personnel: DMX, Sheek, Big Stan, Loose, Kasino, Dragon, The Lox, Mase (rap vocals); Nardo (vocals). Producers include: IrvGotti, Lil' Rob, Swizz, PK, Dame Grease. Engineers include: Patrick Viala, Justice Johnson, Rich Keller. In 1998, DMX brings new energy to a laid-back hip-hop scene. While various MCs have been busy partying and dancing, DMX has been amping himself up for a powerful debut. IT'S DARK AND HELL IS HOT is the first full-length release from the rapper, despite an attempt to break through in 1993. It wasn't until legendary rap label Def Jam got a hold of him that DMX's career began to take off. While being featured on a number of blazing posse cuts, DMX took hip-hoppers to the next level with his smash single, "Get At Me Dog." With tight production and lyrical gymnastics, DMX puts the hardcore back into hip-hop. SKU: 1032712

Three Dollar Bill Y'all
Limp Bizkit: Fred Durst (vocals); Wes Borland (guitar); Sam Rivers (bass); John Otto (drums); DJ Lethal (DJ). Additional personnel: Scott Borland (keyboards). Recorded at Indigo Ranch Studio, Malibu, California. THREE DOLLAR BILL, YALL$, mixes a funky rhythm section, screeching guitars, half rapped, half screamed vocals and noisy sound sculpting (courtesy of DJ Lethal of House Of Pain fame) into a stew that wastes no time simmering and heads straight for a rolling boil. Taking cues from Rage Against The Machine and buddies Korn, the band creates a nearly impenetrable wall of sound. Singer Fred Durst obviously has some issues to work out, and he uses the band as an opportunity to vent. Whether he's railing against fake scenesters ("Counterfeit"), a gold-digging girlfriend ("Stuck") or his own insecurities ("Nobody Loves Me"), Durst makes his opinions known in no uncertain terms, and at thetop of his lungs to boot. Throw in a cover of George Michael's "Faith" and you've got a killer CD. SKU: 1004011

So Good It Hurts
The Mekons: Jon "Johnny Minor" Langford (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Brendan "Staff Nurse" Croker, Ken Des Essientes (vocals, guitar, bass); Tom "Brian" Greenhalgh (vocals, guitar); Eric "Rico Christian" Bellis (vocals, accordion); Sally "Hood" Timms (vocals); Dick "Sir Dickie" Taylor (guitar, piano); Susie"Dora Honeyperson" Honeyman (fiddle); John "Tahitian" Gill (melodeon, bass); Robert "Sigmund" Worby (organ); Steve "Buzz" Goulding (drums). Recorded at Berry St. Studios, London, England in December 1987. The Mekons: Johnny Minor (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Staff Nurse Crocker, Ken Des Essientes (vocals, guitar, bass guitar); Brian Greenhalgh (vocals, guitar); Rico Christian (vocals, accordion); Sally Hood (vocals); Sir Dickie (guitar, piano); Dora Honeyperson (fiddle); Robert Sigmund Worby (organ); Tahitian Gill (melodeon, bass guitar); Buzz Goulding (drums). Recording information: Berry Street Studios, London, England (12/1987). Only slightly less fabulous than its immediate predecessor, 1987's HONKY TONKIN', with SO GOOD IT HURTS the Mekons began to move away from the folk and country experiments which had dominated their music in the mid-'80s. While there's plenty of Susie Honeyman's old-fashioned fiddling and Sally Timms' cowgirl squeals on this record, the songs themselves combine elements of straight-up rock & roll, punk, reggae, and psychedelia, even going so far as to include a straightforward version of the Rolling Stones' "Heart of Stone," sung beautifully by Timms. Rather like contemporaneous albums by The Fall, with whom the Mekons otherwise have little in common, SO GOOD IT HURTS is neatly balanced between rock and roll and the band's own quirkier muse. Their next album, the only slightly ironically-titled THE MEKONS ROCK'N'ROLL continues down the rockist path, but SO GOOD IT HURTS is a pivotal album in the band's long and productive career. To Whom It May Concern
The Bee Gees: Barry Gibb (vocals, guitar); Robin Gibb (vocals); Maurice Gibb (guitar, mandolin, harpsichord, piano, organ, Mellotron, Moog synthesizer, bass). Additional personnel: Alan Kendall (guitar); Clem Cattin, Geoff Bridgeford (drums). Engineers include: Mike Claydon, Damon Lyon-Shaw, Richard Manwaring. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERNis known primarily for the hit single it contains. That single, "Run To Me" is nothing to dismiss, featuring one of Robin Gibb's most passionate, yearning vocals, but there's much more going on here than that. By 1972 many of the Bee Gees early travails had passed; their tumultuous move from Australia to England, Robin's brief departure for a failed solo career (anybody remember ROBIN'S REIGN?). By the time of TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, the Gibbs were pursuing their muse full force, and the album is full of some of their most accomplished pop masterpieces. Inexplicably, this batch of tunes is usually overlooked in assessments of the Bee Gees canon. Most of the tunes here are gentle, acoustic-based ballads; the beautiful "I Can Bring Love" and the deceptively desperate "Please Don't Turn Out The Lights" are poignant compositions that easily rank among the band's best. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN is prime early Bee Gees, recommended to anyone with an interest in early-'70s UK pop. SKU: 1002568

Northern Lights-Southern Cross [Remastered]
The Band: Robbie Robertson (vocals, guitar); Richard Manuel (vocals, piano, organ, Clavinet); Rick Danko (vocals, bass); Levon Helm (vocals, drums); Garth Hudson (soprano saxophone, woodwinds, piccolo, accordion, organ, synthesizer, brass). Engineers include:Ed Anderson, Nat Jeffrey. Recorded at Shangri-La Studio, Zuma Beach, California. Originally released on Capitol. Digitally remastered by Larry Walsh (Capitol Recording Studios). When this album was released in 1975 it was The Band's first album of new material in four years. Though the intervening period had brought forth the brilliant ROCK OF AGES live album and an exuberant set of covers, MOONDOG MATINEE, nay-sayers feared The Band were buying time and that their creative well had perhaps run dry. NORTHERN LIGHTS, SOUTHERN CROSS was greeted as a triumph and a return to form after the less focused CAHOOTS. With only eight songs, they let the mood of each find its true and proper length. From the sly "Ophelia" to the evocative "Acadian Driftwood," the songs embrace character and a sense of place in the best possible ways. "It Makes No Difference" shows their perfect sense of knowing which of their three fine singers to use for each type of song. And the playing is, as always, exemplary. SKU: 1058530

Our Time In Eden
10,000 Maniacs: Natalie Merchant (vocals, piano); Rob Buck (guitar, sitar, banjo, mandocello); Dennis Drew (accordion, piano, organ, keyboards); Steve Gustafson (bass); Jerome Augustyniak (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Mary Ramsey (violin, viola); Bruce Dukov, Ralph Morrison (violin); Pamela Goldsmith (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Kim Laskowski, Atsuko Sato (bassoon); Charles Fleischer (harmonica); Maceo Parker (alto saxophone); Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis (tenor saxophone); Fred Wesley (trombone); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York. On their fifth album, 10,000 Maniacs adopt a lush, full sound that more thoughtfully integrates Natalie Merchant's vocals with the rest of the band. The balance also allows her the option to rise above the mix to far greater effect. Throughout the album, keyboardist Dennis Drew shines, especially on "Gold Rush Brides" and on the title track, where his playing adds tremendous depth to Merchant's tales of loss and loneliness. On both "Few & Far Between" and "Candy Everybody Wants," James Brown's horn section brings a previously absent Motown flavor to the Maniacs' folk-rock sound. The rhythm section provides an extremely sturdy backbone for Robert Buck's subtle guitar playing and understated violins on "Stockton Gala Days," EDEN's standout track. "Jezebel" concludes with a powerful, soaring string section after a long introduction that pairs Drew's keyboards with Merchant's vocals. "The sound you're hearing, the sound you're fearing is the hate that parades up and down our streets," announces Merchant over the distorted guitars of "Tolerance"'schorus, offsetting the much sweeter-sounding verses. The album ends on the chilling notes of "I'm Not the Man," a wrongfully accused man's first-person narrative set to plaintive viola. SKU: 1039106

Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death
GIVE ME CONVENIENCE OR GIVE ME DEATH is a compilation of singles, B-sides, compilation tracks and live tracks. The Dead Kennedys: Klaus Fluoride (vocals, bass); D.H. Peligro (vocals, drums); Jello Biafra (vocals); East Bay Ray (guitar, Echoplex). Additional personnel: 6025 (guitar); Bruce Slesinger [a.k.a. Ted] (drums); Geza X(background vocals). Producers include: Geza X, The Dead Kennedys, Jim Keylor, Thom Wilson, Oliver Dicicco. Compilation producer: Jello Biafra. Engineers include: Oliver Dicicco, Jim Keylor, John Cuniberti. Principally recorded in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Includes liner notes and artwork by Jello Biafra and John Yates. Digitally remastered by John Cuniberti and East Bay Ray (The Plant Mastering, Sausalito, California). If you could only own a single Dead Kennedys' album, your best bet would be 1987's 17-track compilation GIVE ME CONVENIENCE OR GIVE ME DEATH. Collecting the controversial quartet's best-known tracks as well as scattered oddities, CONVENIENCE is the ultimate Dead Kennedys set. The Dead Kennedys are categorized by singer/activist Jello Biafra's biting political commentary, the group's unwillingness to takes themselves too seriously, and some of the most memorable punk-pop of all-time (music that influenced such future chart-toppers as Green Day and the Offspring). Highlights include such punk anthems as "Police Truck," "Too Drunk to Fuck," "California Uber Alles," and "Holiday in Cambodia," plus the hilarious stage improv "Night of the Living Rednecks." Very Best Of Cream, The
Cream: Jack Bruce (vocals, acoustic guitar, cello, harmonica, piano, organ, electric bass); Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Ginger Baker (vocals, drums, percussion). Producers: Robert Stigwood, Felix Pappalardi. Compilation producers: Chris Griffin, Bill Levenson, George McManus. Engineers include: Tow Dowd, Damon Lyon-Shaw, John Timperley. Recorded in 1967-1968. Includes liner notes by Hugh Fielder. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (PolyGram Studios). There've been numerous one-disc Cream retrospectives over the years, but this is probably the best. Of course, Cream's official recorded output was only four albums during the group's brief two-year run, with very little chaff amongst the wheat, so one might be excused for wondering if you'd be better off with those still-in-print albums, or with THOSE WERE THE DAYS, the four-CD box set that collects more or less every note Cream ever recorded. In any case, at 20 songs, this is the most comprehensive one-CD Cream best-of extant and conceptually it's certainly the most interesting. Despite the fact the group was mostly esteemed as (and occasionally dismissed as) a live, blues-based extended-jams outfit that sometimes didn't know when to quit, most of thesongs here are tuneful, concise studio tracks with Beatle-esque touches in the arrangements; it's hard to imagine how anybody could dismiss gems like "Anyone for Tennis" or "Badge" as excessive. Picture Of Health
Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Art Pepper (alto saxophone); Phil Urso (tenor saxophone); Carl Perkins (piano); Curtis Counce (bass); Lawrence Marable (drums). Producer: Richard Bock. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Radio Recorders, Los Angeles, California on October 31, 1956. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster. As the name implies, these sides reflect the influence of the tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, who composed all the selections except two. Performing these works is the front line of Chet Baker, Art Pepper, and Phil Urso. They are supported by the working trio led by bassist Curtis Counce that includes the unconventional pianist Carl Perkins and the underrated drummer Larence Marable. Baker and Pepper make a powerful team, each rising to the task of complimenting the other. For his part, Baker displays a more rhythmic side on these mostly up-tempo tunes, often prodded by the spirited rhythm section. Pepper is his usual slick self, his snaking alto lines weaving their way devilishly through the swinging rhythms. He also contributes the two non-Heath tunes of the set, the dark swinger "Minor Yours" and the closing romp "Tynan Time." Other choice cuts includeHeath's famous "C.T.A.," the intricate opening title cut and the equally exciting "For Minors Only." SKU: 1002766

Full Moon Dirty Hearts
INXS includes: Michael Hutchence (vocals); Garry Gary Beers, Tim Farriss, Jon Farriss, Andrew Farriss, Kirk Pengilly. Additional personnel: Chrissie Hynde, Ray Charles (vocals); John Kirk (trumpet). Principally recorded at Capri Digital Studios, Capri, Italy. Includes liner notesby members of INXS. 1993's FULL MOON, DIRTY HEARTS was INXS's last album before a long, traumatic break ending only with 1997's ELEGANTLY WASTED, a fine return overshadowed by singer Michael Hutchence's suicide not long after its release. Although it seems as if it should foreshadow the difficult years ahead, if anything FULL MOON, DIRTY HEARTS is the most relaxed, breezy INXS album ever. Their early, jittery, new wave sound was, by the time of 1984's THE SWING, refined into a tense but sexy swagger. But while this album features a few rattlesnake-shake dance-rockers early on, the overall mood turns surprisingly mellow by the appearance of the Elton John-like ballad "Kill the Pain," and the smoothly poppy "Cut Your Roses Down." By the weird, atmospheric closer, "Viking Juice," it's as if INXS have completely reinvented themselves. SKU: 1006761

Not That Kind
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Anastacia (vocals); Eric Kupper (guitar, keyboards); Chris Goercke, Vernon Black, Rob Bailey, Careth Prosser (guitar); Louis Biancaniello (keyboards, drums, programming); Gary Haase (bass); Sam Watters (drums, background vocals); Richie Jones, Steve Wolfe (drums); Luis Conte (percussion); BeBe Winans, Audrey Wheeler, Craig Derry, Nicky Richards (background vocals). Producers include: Ric Wake, Louis Biancaniello, Sam Watters, Evan Rogers, Carl Sturken. Engineers include: "Young" Dave Scheuer, Ethan Mates, Thomas R. Yezzi. Anastacia's throaty vocals lurk somewhere between Chaka Khan and Terence TrentD'Arby, which will give you some idea of this R&B diva's power as she rips through a widely varied set that spans contemporary country, pop-R&B, and big-time ballads. She eschews run-of-the-mill contemporary fashions in search of something that tends more towards the timeless, and it's a smart choice. Her debut is an immensely enjoyable romp through turn-of-the-21st century R&B with a backward glance at vintage Stevie Wonder stylings on "Don'tcha Wanna" and uptempo Al Green on "Yo Trippin'," which also recalls early-'70s party-hearty outfits such as KC & The Sunshine Band. There's a classic feel to much of NOT THAT KIND that signals both Anastacia's good taste, and good judgement in her choice of producers and material. SKU: 1042819
