Best Of Joe Williams, The
Personnel includes: Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan, Lambert, Hendriks & Ross (vocals); Frank Wess (alto & tenor saxophones, flute); Billy Mitchell, Frank Foster, Ben Webster, Eddie Daniels, Joe Farrell (tenor saxophone); Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); Thad Jones, Snooky Young, Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Garnet Brown (flugelhorn, trombone); Al Grey, Henry Coker, Benny Powell (trombone); Count Basie (piano, organ); Hank Jones, Roland Hanna (piano); Freddie Green, SamHerman (guitar); Milt Hinton, George Duvivier, Richard Davis, Tommy Potter (bass); Sonny Payne, Don Lammond, Mel Lewis, Charlie Persip (drums); Jimmy Jones & His Orchestra, Jimmy Mundy & His Orchestra. Principally recorded between October 11, 1957 and May 5, 1970. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald. Most of these tracks were originally recorded for the Roulette label in the years 1957-1962; detailed liner notes place these recordings in the context of Williams' career and his relationship with Basie and other bandleaders. Like Basie, Williams built a reputation on the blues while demonstrating equal finesse and familiarity with ballads and uptempo standards. The singer came to prominence with Count Basie in 1955, with the hit "Every Day I Have the Blues" on Norman Granz's Verve label; this collection opens with a later version recorded in 1959. Other blues tunes here include "Confessin' the Blues," a live small-group version of "Alright, Okay, You Win," "Goin' to Chicago" (with Lambert, Hendricks & Ross), the blues ballad "Hurry on Down," and a live Basie band version of "Roll 'Em Pete." The balance of the material is standards, recorded with Basie or with orchestras led by Jimmy Mundy, Jimmy Jones and others, with the occasional strings, harp, and/or woodwinds. The less familiar standards are particularly satisfying; Williams wanders onto Sinatra-esque turf with "A Man Ain't Supposed to Cry" and delivers the snaky "I Was Telling Her About You" with deadpan sincerity. Jaco Pastorius

Recorded at Camp Colomby Studios, New City, New York and Columbia Recording Studios C&B, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. All tracks have been digitally remastered. With one album, this self-titled first release, bass phenomenon Jaco Pastorius was catapulted into the position of the greatest electric bass player that ever lived. Officially discovered by Blood, Sweat & Tears drummer Bobby Colomby, Jaco's revolutionary use of the bass as a solo instrument made him one of the most compelling instrumentalists of the electric era. Indeed, this record marked a turning point in the history of music--from the period before Jaco Pastorius and the period since. It is the first track, Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," that did it all. Accompanied only by conga drums, Jaco proceeds to ferociously tear through the intricatemelody and then produce several choruses of stunning solos like no one had ever heard. From machine gun-like staccato lines to deep space harmonics, his command of the instrument is frightening. Pastorius is joined by R&B heroes Sam & Dave for a rousing reading of the funky "Come On, Come Over." Also included on this treasure are cherished works like the expressive "Continuum," the poetic solo "Portrait of Tracy," and the fiery "(Used to be a) Cha-Cha." In all, more than a stunning debut, this is a testament to Pastorius' legendary greatness. SKU: 1040078

Red Shoes, The
Personnel: Kate Bush (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, Fender Rhodes, bass); Prince (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Danny McIntosh (guitar); Paddy Bush (mandola, valiha, singing bowls, musical bow, fujare, whistles, background vocals); Nigel Kennedy (violin, viola); Justin Vali (valiha, kaboosy, background vocals); Nigel Hitchcock (tenor & baritone saxophones); Paul Spong (trumpet); Neil Sidwell (trombone); Steve Sidwell (trumpet, flugelhorn); Gaumont D'Olivera (bass, drums, percussion, programming); John Giblin (bass); Stuart Elliot (drums, percussion); Charlie Morgan (percussion); Lenny Henry, Collin Lloyd-Tucker (background vocals); Trio Bulgarka, Gary Brooker. Recordedat Abbey Road Studios Number One, London, England. Kate Bush was never the most prolific of artists; this 1993 album and its attendant singles formed her complete '90s output. Her recordings are carefully conceived, densely orchestrated, and finely tuned, and THE RED SHOES is no exception. Though spontaneity may not be her strong suit, her records are never dull or self-indulgent. Among Kate Bush's most relaxed recordings, THE RED SHOES features a number of guest appearances, notably Eric Clapton, Nigel Kennedy, and Jeff Beck. Highlights include the appropriately bouncy "Rubberband Girl," the double entendre-laden "Eat the Music," complete with a great horn section, and "Big Stripey Lie," an angry track shot through with distortion and some of Bush's most agonized vocals since her 1980 album NEVER FOR EVER. Also noteworthy is "Why Should I Love You?" an interesting collusion between Bush's introspective style and loose funk lite, courtesy of The Artist Hereafter Known As Prince Rodgers Nelson. Brighter Than A 1000 Suns
Killing Joke: Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards); Geordie (guitar); Raven (bass); Big Paul Ferguson (drums). Prior to this recording, Killing Joke had banished itself to one ofthe far corners of the globe, anticipating an Armageddon that never materialized. When it returned, it set itself a fast and furious work pace that would beget a number of superb albums, which reached their apogee in BRIGHTER. Unabashedly the most commercial release in their catalog up to this point, BRIGHTER is a paean to Man's courage and persistence of vision, as well as a reflection of his folly: the destruction of his communities ("Goodbye to the Village"), the pillaging of his neighbors ("Sanity"), and the emasculation of his environments ("Wintergardens"). Melodic, majestic-sounding guitars dominate throughout, while poised and powerful rhythms and synthesizers help to strike home these stinging indictments. BRIGHTER stands as a grand and glorious achievement. SKU: 4115631

Producers include: Vidal Davis, Darren Henson, Andre Harris, 4Hero, Ivan Barias. Engineers include: Brad Somatik, Vidal Davis, Keith Pelzer. Includes liner notes by Jill Scott, Steve McKeever. "He Loves Me (Lyzel In E Flat)" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. "He Loves Me (Lyzel In E Flat)" (Illegal Mix) was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Remixed Recording. One of the brightest stars to emerge from the Philadelphia nu-soul scene that spawned Erykah Badu, The Roots and Bilal is poet/vocalist Jill Scott. Riding the momentum of her 2000 debut WHO IS JILL SCOTT?, this Pennsylvannia native's sophomore bow is EXPERIENCE: JILL SCOTT 826+, a 2-CD outing of live performances and a handful of studio cuts. Backed by her fabulous 9-piece Fatback Taffy, Scott casts aside the more mannered versions of much-loved songs like "Slowly Surely" and "Getting' In The Way" and infuses them with breathy arrangements that unwind over unstoppable grooves and shimmering nuances. Affable and loquacious, Scott's down-home on-stage patter is as engaging as her music. When she's not playfully dogging her image as a positive goody-two shoes within the intro to "It's Love," she's discussing pointed observations of a scantily clad teen at a bus stop leading into the sinewy 11-minutemix of sensuality and exploitation that defines "Thickness." New studio cuts like the ultra-funky "Gimme" and her lo-fi hip-hop Common duet "High Post Brotha" are equally potent and show Ms. Scott is only getting started down the road to a legendary music career. Police Live, The [Remastered] [ECD]
The Police: Sting, Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland. Additional personnel: Tessa Niles, Dolette McDonald, Michelle Cobbs (background vocals). Recorded live at The Orpheum, Boston, Massachussets and at The Omni, Atlanta, Georgia between 1979 & 1983. By the time The Police broke up in 1984, they'd already traveled the world and played before millions of people in hundreds of countries. Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland had come a long way from their first American visit, when they drove across the continent piled into a van and played in any dive that would have them. LIVE chronicles The Police at opposite ends of their career. Disc 1 was originally recorded for Boston's WBCN-FM in November of 1979; REGGATA DE BLANC had come out months before and the band was still raw, a full year away from cracking the American Top 10. The stripped down sound The Police displayed shows a group not far removed from the evolving new wave movement, which dominated the charts in their native England at the time. The versions of "Walking On The Moon" and "The Bed's Too Big Without You" point to the heavy reggae undertones--whether in the dub-like dynamics of Summers' guitar playing, or the rhythmic interplay that Sting and Copeland tease each other with--that made the band's sound so unique. Rare versions of the band's first two independent singles, "Fallout" and "Landlord," are part of a set that was as close to punk rock as The Police ever got. Disc 2 is from The Omni, ahockey rink in Atlanta, recorded four years to the month from when the WBCN show took place. By now The Police were huge, having graduated from clubs and theaters to arenas and stadiums; "Every Breath You Take" and SYNCHRONICITY, their first and only chart-toppers, ruled the airwaves. Any remnants of the first tour's gritty feel was gone in favor of a pristine sound, and a trio of back-up singers doubled the number of musicians on stage. Predictably, newer songs like "Tea In The Sahara" and "King Of Pain" dominated the set list, alongside older standards like "Roxanne." The upside of all this time spent playing together was that the unit could incorporate different textures into their music, attracting new fans without alienating die-hards. LIVE shows The Police as a band able to leap the chasm separating the studio and the stage, with a brand of genre-hopping music that spawned imitators while defying categorization. SKU: 1085290

No More Sad Refrains (The Anthology)
This collection includes songs from Sandy Denny's solo albums THE NORTH STAR GRASSMAN AND THE RAVENS, SANDY, LIKE AN OLD FASHIONED WALTZ and RENDEZVOUS, as well as tracks by Fairport Convention, Fotheringay and The Bunch, and various rare recordings and demos. Personnel includes: Sandy Denny (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Richard Thompson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, electric dulcimer, mandolin, accordion, bass); Trevor Lucas (acoustic & electric 6- & 12-string guitars, background vocals); Simon Nichol (vocals, guitar); Ian Matthews (vocals, percussion); Linda Peters Thompson (vocals); Jerry Donahue (guitar, background vocals); Sneaky Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar); Dave Swarbrick (mandolin, violin, viola); John "Rabbit" Bundrick (piano, organ, keyboards); Steve Winwood (electric piano, organ); Jean Rossel (keyboards); Tony Reeves, Danny Thompson (bass) Pat Donaldson (bass, backgound vocals); Gerry Conway (drums, background vocals); Timi Donald (drums). Producers include: Trevor Lucas, John Wood, Peter Elford, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson. Compilation producer: Bill Levenson. Engineers include: John Wood, Jerry Boys, Trevor Lucas. Recorded between September 1968 & June 1976. Includes liner notes by Clinton Heylin. Digitally remastered by Jeff Willens (Universal Mastering Studios-East). This anthology is a fitting tribute to the towering artistry of Sandy Denny. Not only was she a heartbreakingly riveting singer, she also composed timeless songs, including the one that closes this two-disc set and lends it its title. These 34 songs are drawn from her work with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, and her own jeweled solo albums--THE NORTH STAR GRASSMAN & THE RAVENS, SANDY, and LIKE AN OLD FASHIONED WALTZ are all enduring works of grace and beauty. With the combination of her British Isles heritage and a love for American folk music, Sandy Denny developed a voice of her own fairly early on, first flourishing in Fairport Convention, then starting out on her own in a variety of settings. All of the phases of her 10-year career (she died in 1978) are represented here, making this an essential collection. Two other sets available are the three-disc WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIMEGOES, and THE BEST OF SANDY DENNY, on a single disc. SKU: 1052266

Infinite Dave Douglas, The
Personnel includes: Dave Douglas (trumpet); Chris Potter (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet); Uri Caine (Fender Rhodes piano); James Genus (bass); Clarence Penn (drums). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York in December 2001. THE INFINITE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. The lead-off acknowledgement of gratitude on the cd booklet for THE INFINITE is "An infinite thank you to Miles Davis," which should come as little surprise to peoplewho have followed Dave Douglas's career. Besides both musicians playing trumpet and occasional keyboard, Mr. Douglas shares Miles's intensely inquisitive sensibility and is at least as prolific a recording artist. He is involved in numerous bands, with the quintet on this recording perhaps being the most direct homage to Miles's storied second quintet of the 1960s. Like his predecessor, Mr. Douglas doesn't shy away from pop if he senses a worthy musical vehicle for his arranging and improvisational prowess. And so included in this set amongst his fine originals are tunes by Rufus Wainwright, Mary J. Blige, and Bjork, which fit in with the overall proceedings effortlessly. In fact Bjork's "Unison" is one of the stronger ensemble pieces here. Nice touches throughout the album are Uri Caine's Fender Rhodes playing, Chris Potter's sumptuous long tones on bass clarinet and the considerable heat generated by the rhythm section of James Genus and Clarence Penn. Out Of Time
R.E.M.: BillBerry (vocals, piano, drums, congas, percussion); Mike Mills (vocals, organ, harpsichord, bass); Michael Stipe (vocals, bass melodica); Peter Buck (guitar, mandolin). Additional personnel includes: KRS-One, Kate Pierson (vocals); Peter Holsapple (guitar, bass); John Keane (pedal steel guitar); David Kampers, David Braitberg, David Arenz, Ellie Arenz (violin); Paul Murphy, Reid Harris (viola); Andrew Cox, Elizabeth Murphy (cello); Kidd Jordan (bass clarinet, alto, tenor & baritone saxophones); Cecil Welch (flugelhorn); Ralph Jones (acoustic bass). Engineers include: Mike Reiter, John Keane, Ted Malia. Recorded at Soundscape Studios, Athens, Georgia. R.E.M. are the most successful band of recent years, their stream of acclaimed albums illustrates the importance of R.E.M. as America's greatest post-Springsteen export. Michael Stipe's thinking person's lyrics are almost buried by the band's Byrdslike arrangements of the notable 'Radio Song' and 'Shiny Happy People'. There are those that have criticized R.E.M. for stepping out of a parochial indie scene, but their impact in the 90s was as welcome as the Sex Pistols were in the 70s. Their catalogue is destined to endure as critics reluctantly accept their considerable importance in the history of rock. They will continue to make albums as good as this. SKU: 1002190

Black Light, The
Calexico: Joey Burns (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, mandolin, cello, accordion, keyboards, double bass, percussion); John Convertino (accordion, vibraphone, marimba, drums, percussion). Additonal personnel: Stephanie Nelson (vocals); Nick Luca (Spanish guitar, claves); Gabriel Landin (gitaron); Neil Harry (pedal steel guitar); Bridget Keating (violin); Rigo Pedroza, Fernando Sanchez, Al Tapatio (trumpet); Howe Gelb (piano, organ); Tasha Bundy (background vocals). Principally recorded at Wavelab Studios, Tucson, Arizona in July, August & December, 1997. When not serving as a rhythm section for such acts as Giant Sand, Barbara Manning, Richard Buckner and The Friends of Dean Martinez, multi-instrumentalists Joey Burns and John Convertino comprise Calexico, also featuring Convertino's wife Tasha Bundy on backing vocals. Based in Tuscon Arizona, Calexico makes the most of its proximity to the Mexican border--the music is dominated by Spanish rhythms, sounds, and textures. THE BLACK LIGHT is mostly instrumental, with a few songs sung by Burns in a voice strangely reminiscent of The Eagles' Glenn Frey. The feel is always relaxed but intriguing, with a wide range of instrumentation (Burns & Convertino play bass, guitar, cello, mandolin, accordian, steel guitar, vibes, drums, marimba, and percussion, with guest musicians handling organ, piano, violin, and claves) very effectively conveying a dark, almost cinematic vision of desert-town nightlife. A horn section is brilliantly utilizedon tracks like "Chach," "Minas De Cobre," and "Over Your Shoulder." The vocal songs deal with violence, dead ends both figurative and literal, booze and crime. "Margaritaville" it ain't, but THE BLACK LIGHT still makes for excellent summer listening either on the porch, fire escape, or hacienda. SKU: 5062962

Get Lifted
Personnel include: John Legend (vocals, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, organ, keyboards); Kanye West (rap vocals, programming); Snoop Dogg (rap vocals); Dave Tozer (guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, programming); Miri Ben-Ari (strings);Tim Izo (flute, saxophone); Printz Board (trumpet); Will.i.am (Moog synthesizer, programming). Producers: John Legend; Kanye West; Will.i.am; Dave Tozer. Recording information: The Record Plant, Los Angeles, CA; Sony Music Studios, New York, NY; Westlake Audio, Hollywood, California. Six years after cutting his musical teeth as a teen, tickling the ivories on the classic Lauryn Hill single "Everything Is Everything," John Stephens popped up everywhere in 2004, going by the bold name of John Legend. His ubiquity was unsurprising, since he was taken under the wing of Kanye West, the year's breakout success, who tabbed Legend "the future of hip-hop." It's an interesting label for a man whose elegant voice and schooled songwriting conjures up Bill Withers and Al Green, but sometimes the future intersects with the past in a manner transcending revival. Legend drops his debut, GET LIFTED, into the center of the neo-soul universe, and it's a charming, earnest record. Sometimes he dives into a contemporary slow jam, as on "Let's Get Lifted;" other times he finds a groove the Delfonics would be proud of, as on the West-driven "Number One." On the gently gorgeous "Ordinary People, " however, it's just the man and his piano. Whether he's truly the future direction of any genre or not, Legend is an artist to watch, and GET LIFTED offers the first major taste of his talent. SKU: 6569190

Mommy's Little Monster
Social Distortion: Michael Ness (vocals, electric guitar); Dennis Dannell (electric guitar); Brent Liles (bass); Derek O'Brien (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Chazz Ramirez (organ). Producers include: Social Distortion, Chaz Ramirez, Thom Wilson. Recorded on December 24, 1982. A casual listen to this debut album by the long-running California punkers suggests a band very much of its time, but if you listen carefully you can already hear what ultimately set the group apart from the rest of the hardcore pack. Sure, leader Mike Ness tended to bark out his lyrics rather than sing them, and sure, the rest of the band had learned every move from the Ramones/Pistols/Clash playbook. But even at this stage, the group already had a sense of humor (the title song), a musical palette that went beyond punk (you can hear the early Who here at times, not to mention echoes of the bluesy side of the Stones), and a bit of honest emotion;whether this was a result of Ness's drug dependency demons or not, these songs are never generic punk rants--they're an expression of somebody's actual feelings. Oliver
Ron Moody recreates his magnificent stage performance as Fagin on this soundtrack album of what must be the best British musical film ever. Shani Wallis replaced Georgia Brown as Nancy, and, together with Mark Lester (Oliver), Jack Wild (Artful Dodger) and Oliver Reed (the sinister Bill Sikes), gives Lionel Bart's marvellous score the full treatment. Highlights are impossible to select; Oliver's tender "Where Is Love?" and Fagin's "You've Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two" linger in the memory, butthe complete set is as fresh now as when it was released over 25 years ago. In those pre-Lloyd Webber days, musicals had lots of strong songs, not just one. SKU: 1006788
