EP's
This is a five-CD set, with each disc running approximately twenty minutes. Gorgeously packaged, it includes commentaries by Robert Wyatt as wellas the video for "Shipbuilding." The discs are divided into different phases of his work, and it's a testament to the value of this man's artistry that the label produced the package in such a manner. While the material would have fit on two discs, such a release would have lacked the focus and beauty that is allowed to blossom here. The earliest songs are from Wyatt's brief moment of UK pop stardom when he had a hit with "I'm A Believer" in 1974. The final disc features re-mixes of four songs from his 1997 album, SHLEEP. These tracks hit the listener with the force of a revelation. Wyatt's sturdy tunesmanship and penetrating singing are given radical re-workings, but tellingly, the essential character that he gave to each song remains undiminished. These serve as elaborations or alternate vantage points--the studio approaches sound at once foreign to the Wyatt canon, yet completely natural. For those unfamiliar with Wyatt, this set is an ideal place to get aquatinted with the range and impact of his work. SKU: 5066360

In The Life Of Chris Gaines
Personnel includes: Garth Brooks (vocals, acoustic guitar);Gordon Kennedy (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Wayne Kirkpatrick (acoustic guitar, Clavinet, keyboards, programming, background vocals); Tommy Sims (acoustic guitar, keyboards, programming, background vocals); Reggie Young (electric guitar); Mike Lawler (Clavinet, keyboards); Phil Madeira, Rami Jaffee (Hammond B-3 organ); Matt Rollings, Greg Phillinganes, Blair Masters (keyboards); Jimmie Lee Sloas, Hutch Hutchison (bass); Chris McHugh (drums, percussion, programming); Kenny Aronoff, Dan Needham, Eddie Bayers (drums); Lenny Castro, Terry McMillan (percussion); Crystal Taliefero, Lee Leavitt, Mark Heimermann, Chris Harris (background vocals). Engineers include: JB Baird, Glenn Spinner, Steve Bishir. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. For IN THE LIFE OF CHRIS GAINES, Garth Brooks has created the character Chris Gaines, a pop/rock superstar. This "greatest hits" album, made to accompany a movie called "The Lamb," features tracks from every stage of Gaines's "career." According to the story, Gaines first tasted fame as part of a band called Crush, who made a big splash in 1986 with the song "My Love Tells Me So." After the death of Crush's singer, Gaines went solo, and the track selection here is meant to show how his voice matured over the course of four albums. These solid, melodic, and well-crafted tracks incorporate influences from the Beatles, Bob Seger, Stevie Wonder, Aerosmith, Billy Joel, and Bob Dylan. However, Brooks' voice is nearly always instantly recognizable--to wit, the man may be behind the curtain, but his cowboy hat is showing. The CD also includes two "new" tracks. While the dreamy "Lost in You" sounds suspiciously like Babyface (co-producer of "The Lamb" film), the compelling "Right Now" combines chanted lyrics with the chorus of the Youngbloods' classic "Get Together." Even if you can't get past the fact that Gaines doesn't actually exist, this still absolutely hangs together as a pop/rock album. SKU: 1043372

Walk To Remember, A
Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, the film A WALK TO REMEMBER features teen phenom Mandy Moore as straight-laced Jamie Sullivan, the 17-year-old protagonist who ends up getting involved with and changing for the better the town bad boy Landon Carter (Shane West). Not surprisingly, Moore's vocal talents have landed her on the soundtrack with lovelorn ballads ("Only Hope", "It's Gonna Be Love"), a mid-tempo nugget ('Cry"), and a heartfelt duet ("Someday We'llKnow" with Jonathan Foreman). Foreman's Contemporary Christian Music group Switchfoot also helps maintain the mood of innocence with secular fare like the ruminative "Only Hope," hook-filled slow roller "Learning To Breathe," and chiming "Dare You To Move". Other notable cuts include Toploader's snappy cover of '70s one-hit wonder King Harvest ("Dancin' In The Moonlight"), a ballad by Christian teen songbird Rachael Lampa ("If You Believe"), and a slice of soaring, blue-eyed soul by the late New Radicals ("Mother, We Just Can't Get Enough"). There's even a stab at alt-rock by Moore co-star Shane West via West, Gould & Fitzgerald's "So What Does It All Mean?" SKU: 1075572

Concert The Park - August 15th, 1991
Personnel: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); Vincent Nguini, Ray Phiri, John Selolwane (guitar); Michael Brecker (saxophone, EWI); Barney Rachabane (saxophone, pennywhistle); Tony Cedras (accordion, keyboards); Chris Botti (trumpet); Richard Tee (keyboards); Steve Gadd (drums); Sidinho Moreira, Mingo Araujo, Cyro Baptista, Dom Chacal (percussion); Julia Waters, Maxine Waters, Oren Waters, Briz (vocals). Engineers: Roy Halee, Stacey Foster, Jay Vicari, Rich Travali. Recorded live in Central Park, New York, New York August 15, 1991. Simon's 1991 free concert in New York's Central Park was something of a homecoming for the Queens-born singer-songwriter. Several years earlier, his Central Park concert with erstwhile partner Art Garfunkel made the news not just in New York, but all over the world, quickly turning into the stuff of legend. By the '90s, Simon had become a cross-cultural pop pioneer, via the South African sounds of GRACELAND and the Brazilian rhythms of RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS. Along the way, he proved that his musical legacy was a continually unfolding one, with no end yet in sight. Captured here for posterity, the CONCERT IN THE PARK is essentially a tour through the various phases of his career, from the folkie beginnings of "Sounds Of Silence" through '70s pop hits like "Kodachrome"and his more daring later work. Simon is accompanied by an astounding band that brings together New York studio vets, South African musicians and a Brazilian percussion group, and the result is an elegant, panoramic, cross-cultural sound. Simon's older material is reinterpreted and successfully redefined in the process. SKU: 1001437

In The Light (Dub/Vocal)
2 LPs on 1 CD: IN THE LIGHT (1977)/IN THE LIGHT DUB (1977). Personnel: Horace Andy (vocals, guitar, percussion); Andy Bashford, Privy Dread (guitar); Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall, Tommy McCook, Don D. Junior, Charles Bashford (horns); Augustus Pablo, Bobby Kalphat, Michael Taylor, Bernard "Touta" Harvey (keyboards); Michael Taylor, Leroy Sibbles (bass); Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Noel "Jah Malla" Alphonso (drums); Noel "Skully" Simms, Clayton Downie, Sylvan Morris, Everton DaSilva (percussion); Wayne Jarrett, Janice (background vocals). Engineers: Sylvan Morris, Major Little, Dennis Thompson. Includes liner notes by Steve Barrow. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Perhaps Horace Andy's best album, 1977's IN THE LIGHT serves as a great example of his unique vocal and songwriting abilities. "Do You Like My Music" features slow, deliberate melodies over a wicked rhythm track. Andy works his high-pitched magic on the vocal version, while King Jammy's dub version on the latter part of the disc accentuates the bass and usesappropriately minimalist echo on the sparse vocal shots. Equally powerful are the politically-driven "Government Land" and the social commentary of "Problems." Although the album has quite a varied line-up, with Leroy Sibbles and Augustus Pablo among the players a treat is bound to be in store. With the full IN THE LIGHT DUB track listing thrown in, IN THE LIGHT is hard to beat. Blood & Fire couldn't have done a greater service for Horace Andy fans. SKU: 5071329

Soul On Top
Personnel: James Brown (vocals); Bill Pitman, Louis Shelton (guitar); Ernie Watts, Joe Romano (alto saxophone); Maceo Parker, Pete Christlieb, Buddy Collette (tenor saxophone); Jim Mulidore (baritone saxophone); Al Aarons, John Audino, Chuck Finley, Tom Porello (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland, Nick DiMaio, Kenny Shroyer, Bill Tole (trombone); Frank Vincent (piano); Ray Brown (bass guitar); Louie Bellson (drums); Jack Arnold (percussion); Louie Bellson Orchestra. Liner Note Authors: Francis Davis; Leonard Feather. Recording information: United Recorders, Hollywood, California (11/10/1969 - 11/11/1969). Arranger: Oliver Nelson. SOUL ON TOP is one of the more unusual entries in the James Brown catalog. On this 1969 album, the Godfather of Soul is backed by jazz drummer Louie Bellson's big band, with arrangements by famed jazz orchestrator Oliver Nelson, for a program including numerous jazz standards, a country tune, and jazzy reworkings of classic Brown songs. Brown was a jazz fan and admirer of Bellson, and finally approached him to do an album, at which point Bellson suggested bringing Nelson aboard as arranger. The results ostensibly take Brown out of his comfort zone. However, he sounds no less assured on a jazz boogaloo version of Hank Williams's "Your Cheatin' Heart" and a funked-up, horn-heavy take on Kurt Weill's "September Song" than he does on reinterpretations of his own "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Brown brought longtime saxman Maceo Parker along for company, so there's a bit of JB's flavor here, but for the most part it's a strange-but-happy marriage of Brown's gritty R&B voice, Bellson's hard-charging big band, and Nelson's harmonically rich horn arrangements. If you never thought you'd hear a soulful versionof the Anthony Newley tune "What Kind of Fool Am I," SOUL ON TOP will change your mind. SKU: 6557527

Cry
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files as well as a six minute video of Faith Hill's studio sessions. Personnel includes: Faith Hill (vocals); Damon Johnson (acoustic, electric & slide guitars); Marti Frederiksen (acoustic & electric guitars, percussion, background vocals); Tim Pierce (acoustic & electric guitars); Dean Parks (acoustic guitar); Michael Landau, Bryan Gallimore (electric guitar, background vocals); Suzie Katayama (violin); Jim Cox (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); Paul Bushnell. Leland Sklar (bass); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Bekka Bramlet(tambourine, background vocals); Eric Carter, Frank Macek (programming); Erik Lutkins (loops); Doug Moffet, Lisa Gregg, Lisa Cochran, Crystal Taliefero, Chris Rodriguez (background vocals). Producers: Byron Gallimore, Dann Huff, Marti Frederiksen. "Cry" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Listening to the opening track "Free" on Faith Hill's CRY, one might be momentarily thrown; is this the Nashville country-pop siren we've come to know, or has the new Christina Aguilera album been mistakenly packaged in this jewel case? Come to think of it, the album cover might prompt the same question. While the electronic, pumping dance-pop rhythms of "Free" are far from what we think of as the Nashville sound, even in the 21st century, expectations are put back on track with the next track. The title song is closer to the Garth Brooks-meets-Pat Benatar power ballad sound commonly associated with Hill. The rest of the album walks a tightrope between the two styles, darting back and forth on either side. While the likes of "Stronger" and "You're Still Here" are ballads close to Hill's country-pop beginnings, many other tracks here utilize ultra-contemporary dance-pop production techniques in a seeming attempt to push Hill to maturing Britney-lovers. Since Hill has never exactly been what anyone would call "rootsy," this shift in stylistic emphasis is not too tumultuous, and is unlikely to disturb her (huge) hardcore fanbase. SKU: 1076892

Permutation
Amon Tobin stands at a rhythmic crossroads only his bi-continental background can explain. His head-nod is infected with hip-hop beats, his mind reels with jungle's accelerated breaks, and he strides to a sampledelic bebop swing; yet Tobin's musical soul is also saturated with the sounds of his Brazilian heritage. The most perfect moments onPERMUTATION, his second full-length album, happen in the fusion of modern rhythms and styles with the Carnival drums of the Bahia region or with the Bossa Nova pop sounds that have been Rio's musical calling cards since the early '60s. Like DJ Shadow, with whom he shares a creative methodology if not source material, Tobin sculpts pieces out of found sources and the beats he attaches to them. Unlike Shadow, Tobin's beats pledge allegiance to no single rhythmic style. The quieter tracks move peacefully on striding basslines and abstract horn jams or drift by as ambient-lounge bossas. And when Tobin unleashes the breakbeat flurries of his more junglist tendencies, he draws upon the powers of the dozens-strong samba drum brigades of his homeland, fusing them with dark jungle's shrill sound effects and bebop's piano/bass phrases and tempos. Together, they make up a soundtrack to a rhythmically diverse, global-minded future. SKU: 5063740

Standard Coltrane
Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Wilbur Harden (trumpet); Red Garland (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Jimmy Cobb (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on July 11, 1958. Originally released on Prestige (7243). Includes liner notes by Robert Levin and Michael Cuscuna. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). An indispensable recording for admirers of Coltrane's ballad playing, STANDARD COLTRANE emphasizes this moving, stirring aspect of Coltrane's career. The four long tracks serve as a reminder that the tenor saxophonist's skill does not lie exclusively in his faster, more energetic work, but that he is capable of great tenderness and romanticism. "Invitation" and "Don't Take Your Love From Me" are replete with the kind of singing solos Coltrane excels in, with his sax assuming all the tones and pitches of a human voice. While indisputably romantic,STANDARD COLTRANE is not sentimental, and it suffers only from a bit of disorganization here and there, as well as the sense of Coltrane holding back from his own explorations to be in sync with his rhythm section. There is a vague underlying ambivalence on "I'll Get By" and "Spring Is Here" when the musicians seem to be heading in different directions, but this emotionally satisfying album is not ruined by these lapses. Engineers include: Phil Burnett, Roger Nichols, Elliot Scheiner. Recorded at River Sound, Clinton Sound and Electric Lady, New York, New York; Hyperbolic Sound, Maui, Hawaii. TWO AGAINST NATURE won the 2001 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year, won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album and "Cousin Dupree" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. In the 20 years that elapsed since 1980's GAUCHO, Steely Dan linchpins Donald Fagen and Walter Becker have dabbled in solo projects, toured with the Rock & Soul Review, and spent most of the '90s gearing up for the band'slong-awaited eighth studio album, TWO AGAINST NATURE. Only nine songs long, TWO AGAINST NATURE is a clear example of quality over quantity. As has been the modus operandi throughout Steely Dan's existence, Fagen and Becker have gathered an impressive backup crew of jazz players with impeccable chops to season the proceedings. With both Becker and Fagen hovering around age 50, it's not surprising that most of this rich material deals with the uncertainties of middle age. Themes addressed include the complexities of relationships, whether they involve family ("Cousin Dupree"), a toxic significant other ("Negative Girl"), or an old flame met by chance ("What a Shame About Me"). Throughout, Steely Dan manages to successfully straddle the line between the empty calories of light jazz, and the fusion from which the duo has previously borrowed nuances. SKU: 1029318

Kicking A Dead Pig
Coming from a band as prone to out-there weirdness as Mogwai, it should come as no surprise that many of the remixes on KICKING A DEAD PIG bare little resemblance to their LP companions (mostly from YOUNG TEAM). Though this collection of alternate versions introduces Mogwai to the sometimes shady world of remixes, rest assured that you are not likely to hear these tracks coming out of the speakers at your local mall clothier. Paired in the U.S. with a second disc, MOGWAI FEAR SATAN REMIXES, this is 100-plus minutes of tweaked and twisted sonic experiments. Highlights are Hood's ultra-low slung, ambient groove version of "Like Herod," DJ Q's take on "R U Still In To It?" which turns the funk up to 11 for an unsettling recasting of Mogwai asScotland's answer to Daft Punk, and Max Tundra's "Helicon 2" mix, which almost completely inverts the track's soft/loud structure and adds some seriously damaged distortion effects. The highlight of disc two is the 16-minute "My Bloody Valentine Remix," which at times ranges so far from the original as to suggest not only a different song, but that it was created by an entirely different order of creature than human. OK
Personnel: Talvin Singh (tablas, drums, keyboards, programming, piano, percussion, gong, sound effects, vocals, scratches); Ajay Naidu (vocals, spoken vocals); Cleveland Watkiss, Shankar Mahadevan, Bhairvi, Nenes, Suchitra Pillai (vocals); John Klein, Aziz Abrahim, Dhiren Raichura (guitar); Chandrashekar (electric violin); Madras Philharmonic Orchestra (strings); Naveen (flute, pipes); Ryuichi Sakamoto, Rakesh Churasia (flute); Byron Wallace (trumpet); Guy Sigsworth (keyboards, sound effects); Bill Laswell (bass); Vaijanthi-Limaye Sumati Antroliikat Purinama Shah, Archana, Arpaha, Karti Jyotsina Hardikar B Vijayalakshumi (background vocals); Ustad Sultan Khan, Madhukar T Dhumal, Chintoo Singh, Devi, Heat China, Somatik. Fusions of Indian music and Western dance have generally been lumped under the catch-all term "Bhangra" (actually a specific style of popular dance music traditionally associated with wedding parties in Pakistan and Northern India). However, tabla player Talvin Singh's solo debut OK shares a much stronger affinity with the musical structure of a classical Indian raga. Singh doesn't simply add Western club beats behind previously existing Indian music through sampling or remixing. Rather, he exploits the inherent tendencies of "intelligent" drum-and-bass and classical Indian music (ethereal chords and complex time signatures respectively) to find a natural point of intersection between the two, thereby developing an entirely new style. Much more than any contemporaneous examples of "world-dance," this style recalls the fusion tablaist Badal Roy explored on records like Miles Davis' ON THE CORNER. OK echoes those notorious sessions of Miles' fusion era not only in its moments of brilliance and spirit of unedited improvisation, but also in the occasional self-indulgent mess. But while much of the material here cries out for editing, it also retains Miles' capacity to open countless new doors for the genres ofmusic it touches. SKU: 1003895

Revolutions [PA]
The X-Ecutioners: Rob Swift, Roc Raida, Total Eclipse (rap vocals). Additional personnel: Cypress Hill, Dead Prez, Fat Joe, Ghostface Killah, Aasim, Nikki , Rob Zombie, Slug , Trife, Roc Marse, Black Thought, Blue Man Group. Recording information: 2004. In hip-hop's nascent period, DJs from Grandmaster Flash to Jam Master Jay were given the praise and respect they deserved as the driving force behind the music. As rap exploded in the 1990s, the MC became more and more of the focal point, with the DJ fading into the backdrop. However, in the underground, a revolution was brewing, instigated by talented quick-draw turntablists, and at the forefront was the formidable and aptly named cutting crew the X-Ecutioners. As one of the first scratch units to secure a record deal, they slowly ascended to greater heights in the hip-hop world. The group's fourth record, REVOLUTIONS, featuring scads of top-shelf MCs driven to the absolute limits of their game, exhibits the X-Ecutioners as masters of their art, with track after beat-driven track whipping old-school rap, rock, and deep funk into a sonic frenzy. While Rob Zombie's appearance on a reinvention of "More Human Than Human" may get the most attention, a toe-to-toe battle between titans Black Thought (of the Roots) and Ghostface on "Live from the PJs" should turn evenmore ears. REVOLUTIONS, with its apt dual-meaning title, spins on a level all its own and continues the X-Ecutioners' mission to further push the boundaries of hip-hop. SKU: 6552916
