No Nuclear War [Remastered]
Personnel: Peter Tosh (vocals, arranger, guitar, keyboards); Steve Golding (guitar); Dean Fraser, David Madden, Nambo, Chico (horns); Keith Sterling, Tyrone Downie (keyboards); George Fullwood, Gilbert Morrison, Danny (bass); Santa Davison (drums); Sticky Thompson, Scully Sims (percussion); Ruddy Thomas, Pam Hall, Nadine Sutherland, Cynthia Schloss, June Lodge (background vocals). Recorded in 1987. Includes liner notes by Roger Steffens. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of EMI Records "Peter Tosh Remasters" series. On NO NUCLEAR WAR, the final release of his sadly abbreviated career, Peter Tosh continues to speak out against injustice and oppression. Tosh's rich, expressive baritone is right out front, conveying passion and urgency on every song. The title track begins the proceedings on a serious note, and this feeling continues on "Nah Goa Jail" as he declares his resistance to being imprisoned for using marijuana. There are a few eerie ironies here. The accusatory "Vampire" contains the sound of a bloodcurdling scream that doesn'tsound like mere kitsch, and in "Lessons in My Life," Tosh declares "money can make friendship end." At moments like these, it's hard not to think of his death later that year, in a botched robbery, at the hands of someone he knew. The record ends on a hopeful note on "Come Together," a straightforward plea for unity. On the last track on his final record, Tosh sings with his trademark rawness, and turns in a lovely solo on the melodica, an instrument he mastered when he was a young rising star in the world of Jamaican music. Machine And Soul
This 1999 reissue contains seven bonus tracks. All tracks have been digitally remastered. 1993's MACHINE AND SOUL is one of Gary Numan's oddest albums. Dispensing with his usual dystopian science fiction themes, Numan here attempts a UK incarnation of Prince, right down to covering The Purple One's "U Got the Look." There aretwo other great songs here: the title track and the downright funky "Emotion." The rest of the album isn't quite up to those standards, but the Duran Duran-like "The Skin Game" comes pretty close. On the album's original release, Numan also released MACHINE AND SOUL EXTENDED, featuring four extra tracks, "Dark Mountains," "In A Glass House," "The Hauntings," and "Hanoi," which are all included on this Cleopatra reissue, plus three other bonus tracks, including another Prince cover, this one of "1999." Artardecer
Friends Of Dean Martinez includes: Bill Elm (steel guitar); Dave LaChance (drums). After a three-year silence, Friends of Dean Martinez return with their third album, ATARDECER. Mainstay Bill Elm and his new cohorts again concoct 11 instrumentals that are exceedinglycinematic, evocative of the redemption of a crisp dawn after a lonely night of desert winds. The Friends' mid-'90s beginnings aligned them with the then-burgeoning lounge music scene, but that was never an entirely comfortable or accurate fit. Eschewing surface sheen, this outfit has always reveled in a sort of gleeful exaltation of the dark side of Happy Hour. Elm's steel guitar, fuzzy around the edges, is like an old prospector who, looking for a good time on his Friday night in town, ends up drinking himself to delirium in a rooming house that shakes every time a freight train clatters by. This album is highly recommended, as are its two predecessors, SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE and RETROGRADE. SKU: 1068217

Valentine
Original score composed by Don Davis. Chalk up the soundtrack to this teen slasher movie as being more for people who view Valentine's Day as a time of bitter regret and rejection versus one of flowers and amour. This aggro-rockcollection of songs includes contributions by artists who thrive on the dark side, including Marilyn Manson (the dirge-like "Valentines Day") and Rob Zombie (a Hi-NRG remix of "Superbeast"). Other artists willing to keep the dark fires burning are Disturbed (the grindcore exercise "God of the Mind"), Deftones (an ominously rumbling "RX Queen"), and Orgy (the relentlessly driving "Opticon"). Even artists whose talents run more towards weaving beats versus guitar solos also keep the dark mood going, particularly on cuts by BT (the clanging remix of "Smartbomb") and Amanda Ghost (the thumping dance track "Filthy Mind"). Even former alt-rock darlings Filter get into the act by creating an ambient remix of their Beatles-esque hit "Take a Picture." VALENTINE is the perfect soundtrack to harvesting sour grapes and cursing out Cupid. SKU: 1060933

"Paper Chase" features Foxy Brown and diversifies VOL. 2 with its Southern Timbaland-produced feel. SKU: 1001026

Then Came The Night
Personnel includes: Tommy Shane Steiner, Randy Travis (vocals); Bridgette Wilson-Sampras (spoken vocals); Jimmy Ritchey (acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, dobro, mandolin, harmonica, background vocals); B. James Lowry (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason, David Grissom (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (lap steel guitar, steel guitar); Aubrey Haynie (mandolin, fiddle); Jonathan Yudkin (violin, viola, cello); Steve Nathan, John Hobbs (keyboards); Michael Rhodes (bass); Kenny Aronoff, Paul Leim, Lonnie Wilson (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); David Huff (programming); Wes Hightower, Lisa Cochran, Chip Davis, Curtis Wright, Vince Gill (background vocals). If anybody's got a claim to true cowboyhood it's Tommy Shane Steiner, with a grandfather and great-grandfather both in the Cowboy Hall of Fame, though he's as much at home singing about picking up women in yuppie coffee bars in "What We're Gonna Do About It" (with the spoken-word assistance of tennis star Pete Sampras's wife) as rocking out like a cleaned-up, latter day Lynyrd Skynyrd on "Havin' a Good Time." He's obviously no traditionalist--"That Just Wouldn't Be Me" starts the album off with a kind of statement of intent--but we can be sure that we won't find Steiner wearing the "Italian suits and power ties" featured here any time soon. Though most of the songs come complete with the requisite country fiddle and pedal steel guitar trimmings, the lyrics range wide, from the aforementioned coffee shop scenario to "The Mindof John J. Blanchard," a meditation on what's going through the head of a stroke victim. THEN CAME THE NIGHT rocks in all the right places, with just enough radio-friendly gentle country charm added to ensure an extensive audience. SKU: 1073388

Yianilos; Dave Reitzas (tracks 2, 4); Matt Rohr, Marc Reyburn; Barney Perkins and Milton Chan; Mike McCarthy and Victor Caldwell; Humberto Gatica; Bobby Boughton; Acar S. THE BODYGUARD won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Record Of The Year." "I Will Always Love You" won 1994 Grammys for "Record Of The Year" and "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female." "I'm Every Woman" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award for "Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female." One of the highlights of THE BODYGUARD soundtrack is how the film's female lead, Whitney Houston, brings her gospel roots front and center on the half dozen tracks which feature her soaring vocals. These churchy musical overtones are apparent throughout "Jesus Loves Me!" and on her unaccompanied intro to the hit "I Will Always Love You" (penned by country diva Dolly Parton), and in case you didn't get the message, Kirk Whalum's sanctified saxophone break adds an exclamatory Amen. Elsewhere Houston continues to mine her rich vein of ornate balladry and pop-flavored dance workouts on the Ashford & Simpson original "I'm Every Woman" and on her own "Queen Of The Night," with its percolating upbeat production a la L.A. Reid & Babyface. But for fans of romantic pop there's more than Whitney Houston to recommend THE BODYGUARD: The quavering falsetto and rich tenor of the great vocal stylist Aaron Neville find a perfect compliment in Kenny G's soulful alto breaks on "Even If My Heart Would Break;" Curtis Stigers offers a taste of Stax/Volt soul on his version of Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, LoveAnd Understanding," and Joe Cocker teams with Sass Jordan on the rocking love song "Trust In Me." Richest Man In Babylon, The
Thievery Corporation: Rob Garza, Eric Hilton. Additional personnel: Emiliana Torrini, Sleepy Wonder & Shinehead, Lou Lou, Pam Bricker, Notch. Eric Hilton and Rob Garza, the Washington, D.C. duo better known as Thievery Corporation, continue to refine their previously established style on THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON. For their third proper album of new material, they continue to mine a mellow electronica groove with jazz, pop, and world music flavorings mixed in among the expected reggae, soul, and funk elements. The title tune and "The State of theUnion" focus heavily on the reggae aspects of Thievery Corporation's sound, while "Liberation Front" bears more of an acid-jazz feel. The closing track "Resolution" (along with a few others) is more in line with that ethereal trip-hop flow for which Hilton and Garza are perhaps best known. On the graphics side, a great deal of time appears to have been put in to the package here, which includes a thick and evocative photo booklet whose striking, occasionally off-kilter images provide an excellent visual equivalent to the music. When I Was Born For The 7th Time
Cornershop: Tjinder Singh (vocals, guitar, dholki, DJ); Ben Ayres (guitar, keyboards, tamboura); Anthony Saffery (sitar, harmonium, keyboards); Nick Simms (drums); Peter Bengry (percussion). Additional personnel: Paula Frazer, Lourdes Belart (vocals); Justin Warfield (rap vocals); Allen Ginsberg (spoken vocals); Robert Buller, E. Johnson, Grace Winder (strings); Ray (flute). Producers: Tjinder Singh, Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, Daddy Rappaport. WHEN I WAS BORN FOR THE 7TH TIME, the third album by Cornershop, is like a smiling, sun-lit reprieve amidst the pre-millennium tensions of most cutting-edge, Western pop of the end of the century. While their post-modern bricolage mirrors Beck's appropriation skills, Tjinder Singh and his mates craft an album of multi-cultural rhythms, textures and lyrical references. The one-world/one-groove outlook anticipates the 21st century with a glee born of spiritual and physical contentment, rather than Beck's new-pollution dourness. To drive home the point of the importance of rhythm for the soul, playful beat-driven tracks are strewn throughout the album. The groovy instrumental "Butter The Soul" pits slacker record-scratching against a sitar to the shouted delight of onlookers. A sampled voice on "What Is Happening" asks the titular question ofthe situation in the world's capitals while the beat set up by tablas and handclaps suggests a midnight bonfire rally. Singh and the band focus on memories and emotions any listener could identify with, and then personalize and globalize them in one fell swoop. SKU: 1011617

Erotica
Personnel: Madonna (vocals); Paul Pesco, Jerome Dickens (guitar); Danny Wilensky (saxophone); James "Sleepy Keys" Preston (piano); Joe Moskowitz (keyboards, drums, programming); Shep Pettibone (keyboards, sequencing, programming); Tony Shimkin (keyboards, sequencing, programming, drum programming, background vocals); Andre Betts (keyboards, strings, synthesizer, piano, bass, drums); Doug Wimbish (bass); Anton Fig (drums); Sander Selover (programming); Donna Delory, Niki Harris (background vocals). Producers: Madonna, Shep Pettibone, Andre Betts. Recorded at Mastermix and Sound Works, New York, New York. Madonna released EROTICA around the same time she released her Sex book, and that's exactly what it sounds like. The title song has a sensuously static groove over which she commands, "put your hands all over my body." "Where Life Begins" demands that you do something a whole lot more intimate (and quite unrepeatable here) to her. The CD booklet has a photo of Madonna in bondage. To get across the album's naughty feel, Madonna dispensed with the pop prettiness of LIKE A PRAYER and returned to her hard-core dance club roots. She and co-producer Shep Pettibone, who had made his name as a club DJ and dance remixer, craft some alluring bad-girl grooves (catch the ocean-deep bass on "Waiting") while still managing to keep things catchy. "Deeper And Deeper " is celebratory dance-pop (with a brief Latin break that nods to the music's true roots) and "Rain" stands among Madonna's major ballads. There's a strange heaviness amidst the fun, games and bondage on EROTICA, which "In This Life" goes a long way toward explaining: It's about AIDS and homophobia. At her naughtiest and most R-rated, Madonna still carries a message, and it resonates well beyond the dance floor. SKU: 1002101

Songs From Northern Britain
Teenage Fanclub: Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley (vocals, guitar); Gerard Love (vocals, bass); Paul Quinn (drums). Additional personnel: George Borowski (guitar, background vocals); Sonia Slany, Jocelyn Pook, Ann Morfee, Dinah Beamish, Susan Bell, Claire Osler, Sara Herbert, Jules Singleton (strings); Neil Sidwell, Steve Sidwell, Jamie Talbot, Dave Bishop (brass); David Bianco (piano). Engineers: David Bianco, Jamie Seyberth, George Shilling. Recorded at Ridge Farm Studios, Surrey, England between May 20 and July 10, 1996; AIR Studios, London, England on December 1-7 and February 3-8, 1997; Abbey Road Studios, London, England on June 16, 1996. Critics are always citing Big Star and Neil Young as this band's biggest inspirations, but as far as this disc is concerned, just think Byrds and you'll have the "influence thing" covered. "Start Again" is vintage Fanclub; layered vocal harmony throughout, a simple ringing guitar break, all of it wrapped up in a mellow, mid-tempo pop package. This is lush guitar pop, pure and unblemished by affectation or fashion, delivered in a straight-ahead, honest style. "Can't Feel My Soul" builds on top of a monotonous, clanging wash of chiming guitars and, as usual, two, maybe three chords, but no more. The guitar solo is typical Fanclub; short, fuzzy and to the point. If you like sweet, slightly skewed, sixties-oriented pop, you'd do well to join this particular fanclub. SKU: 1020023

Smack Smash
'Smack Smash' is the Germanic rock 'n' roll punks' third album for Epitaph and sees the band take a step further towards their new direction. Whereasthe band's earlier works were deeply rooted in skate-punk, the Beatsteaks have now crossed over to a more thoughtful straight out rock style. Although the band still have a punk urgency about them; tracks such as 'Hello Joe' and 'Atomic Love' show how the band now owe more to The Stooges than to NOFX. SKU: 6554148

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
The soundtrack to the sugary Kate Hudson/Matthew McConaughey romantic comedy HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS bears an eclectic mix of artists. There are plenty of oldies but goodies ranging from Al Green's make-out anthem "Let's Stay Together" and Carly Simon's sassy "You're So Vain" to George Thorogood & The Destroyers' gut-bucket reading of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love." There's also more recent pop manna including Sixpence None The Richer's Cranberries-like "Kiss Me" and the Gin Blossom's jangly power-pop jewel "Follow You Down." Also sprinkled throughout are nifty nuggets like Fisher's trip-hoppish cover of Nat "King" Cole's "L-O-V-E" and a pair of cuts by Canadian poppianist Chantal Kreviazuk including her soulful interpretation of Randy Newman's "Feels Like Home" (which also appears on the DAWSON'S CREEK soundtrack). Best of all is Luce's "Good Day," a delicious combination of Hi Records-flavored horns, percolating bass, and snappy spoken-sung inflection by frontman Tom Luce that falls somewhere between Elvis Costello and Todd Rundgren. Combat Rock [Remastered]
Also available in a 3-pack with THE CLASH and LONDON CALLING. The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (vocals, bass);Topper Headon (drums). Additional personnel: Gary Barnacle (saxophone); Tymon Dogg (piano); Poly Mandrell (keyboards); Allen Ginsberg, Joe Ely, Ellen Foley, Futura 2000 (background vocals). Digitally remastered by Ray Staff & Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios, London, England). It's not easy being the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band (a tag the Clash inherited from the Rolling Stones, who had traded their emotional commitment for tax exile). What you do after changing the world with your first few releases? The previous SANDINISTA was the Clash's WHITE ALBUM, exploring just about every musical style they could think of over the course of three LP's. COMBAT ROCK, then, could be their LET IT BE, an attempt to focus on visceral, accessible material, kidney-punching instead of bobbing and weaving. There's an increased focus on funk here, as on the unlikely hit "Rock the Casbah" and "Overpowered by Funk." Naturally, there's also a pronounced political element to the lyrics (the anti-authoritarian rant of "Know Your Rights," the post-Vietnam morality play of the moving "Straight to Hell.") Despite the renewed sense of focus, though, there's still a high degree of artistic ambition revealed in both the polysyllabic lyrics and the textured, overdub-heavy arrangements. SKU: 1070816

High Fidelity
HIGH FIDELITY was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. The film adaptation of Nick Hornby's cult novel relocates its independent record store setting from London to Chicago, but the HIGH FIDELITY soundtrack thankfully retains the book's eclectic spirit. Though many of the featured artists tend to get caught up in the classic-rock meat grinder, the compilers at least demonstrate great sense by bypassing obvious choices. So, instead of "Like a Rolling Stone," we find OH MERCY's terrific "Mostof the Time" filling the obligatory Dylan spot. And, for once, the jittery British Invasion nugget "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy" represents the Kinks-not "You Really Got Me." The soundtrack's lineup also includes a pair from the Velvets ("Oh Sweet Nuthin" and "Who Loves the Sun"), garage-rock icons Thirteenth Floor Elevators ("You're Gonna Miss Me"), and cutting-edge newcomers such as The Beta Band ("Dry the Rain"). There's even a surprisingly soulful cover of "Let's Get it on," done by Jack Black-half of HBO's Spinal Tap-like Tenacious D duo. HIGH FIDELITY is an unusual soundtrack, closer in spirit to a clever mix tape made by that old college roommate whose two lovers were his hi-fi and his bong. SKU: 1073344

Mermaid Avenue Vol.2
MERMAID AVENUE VOLUME 2 is the second collection of previously unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics set to music by Billy Bragg and Wilco. Personnel: Billy Bragg (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Jay Bennett (12-string acoustic & slide guitars, banjo, mandolin, sitar, harmonica, piano, Farfisa & Hammond B-3 organs, acoustic bass, drums, shaker, tambourine, bells, background vocals); Jeff Tweedy (acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, mandolin, synthesizer, cabasa, background vocals); Bob Egan (slide guitar); Eliza Carthy (violin); Ben Ivitsky (mandolin); Leroy Bach (piano); Mike Henry (background vocals). Additional personnel: Natalie Merchant (vocals); Corey Harris (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals). Producers: Wilco, Billy Bragg, Showbiz. Engineers: Jerry Boys, Dave Trumfio, Mike Hagler. Recorded at Totally Wired Studios, Dublin, Ireland; King Size Sound Laboratories & The Loft, Chicago, Illinois; Fort Apache Studios, Boston, Massachussetts. Includes liner notes by Billy Bragg. MERMAID AVENUE VOL. 2 was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. When Billy Bragg and Wilco completed 1998's MERMAID AVENUE, everyone involved recognized that this ambitious project's overflowing creative juices necessitated a follow-up. Like its predecessor, VOL. II has the aforementioned artists setting a batch of unfinished Woody Guthrie lyrics, provided by the legendary folk singer's daughter Nora, to music. This time out, the approach is harder-edged but once again rambles all over the musical map. The lo-fi flavored nugget "Meanest Man" finds Bragg affecting a Tom Waits-like delivery, while the snarling rave-up "All You Fascists" indicates that Guthrie may have been folk's first punk. Elsewhere, Wilco flies solo in creating a gloriously Byrdsian aura around the chiming "Secret ofthe Sea" while Bragg provides music but no accompaniment on the all-American hillbilly hoedown "Joe DiMaggio's Done It Again." Natalie Merchant returns to provide a sweet vocal cameo on the lilting "I Was Born," and blues revivalist Corey Harris gives life to Guthrie's sarcasm on the rollicking "Aginst Th' Law." Other highlights include Jeff Tweedy's Dylanish inflection on the chugging "Airline to Heaven" and Bragg's Bobby Fuller Four-like arrangement of "My Flying Saucer." SKU: 1033163

Out Of Tune
Mojave 3: Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar); Simon Rowe (electric guitar); Rachel Goswell (brass, background vocals); Alan Forrester (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Ian McCutcheon (drums, shaker, tambourine); Additional personnel: Lisa Millet (vocals); B.J. Cole (pedal steel); Mick Cooke (trumpet); Roman Breslin (trombone). Recorded at Cava Sound Workshops, Glasgow, Scotland, The Fortress, London, England, Tywardreath, Cornwall, England. Like most of their shoegazing peers, Slowdive's Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell embraced ambient and techno music. Then they slyly shifted gears, opting for the road less traveled with the mellow and melodious folk-rock strains of Mojave 3. OUT OF TUNE builds on the lovely, understated charms of 1995's ASK ME TOMORROW. Contrary to the title, the group's fine second set showcases some of Halstead's strongest writing since the dreamy heyday of Slowdive. OUT OF TUNE is graced with those heart-melting Halstead/Goswell harmonies--still every bit as beautiful and blessed on "Give What You Take" and "Baby's Coming Home" as they were in Slowdive--and withaccents of Hammond, Wurlitzer, pedal steel, and brass. Lisa Millet's sublime gospel pipes bring the strummed acoustic chords and downy melodies of "Caught Beneath Your Heel" all that much closer to heaven. Halstead may borrow back pages from Bob Dylan ("Some Kinda Angel," "To Whom Should I Write") and Neil Young ("This Road I'm Travelling") and crib his share of leaves from Nick Drake ("Yer Feet"). But OUT OF TUNE shows Mojave 3 coming of its own, with a sparkling suite quite different from Slowdive's drowsy, gauzy enthrallments but no less seductive. SKU: 1006595

Melting Pot (The Best Of The Charlatans 1990-1997)
Since their 1990 debut single, the Charlatans (originally known in the United States as the Charlatans UK) have slowly evolved into one of the biggest rock bands in their native England. MELTING POT collects 17 of their singles and key album tracks from 1990-1997, illustrating the steady development of this hard-working, down-to-earth band. Early singles ("The Only One I Know," "Weirdo") borrow heavily from the Stone Roses, blending funky Manchester beats with Tim Burgess' trippy, laid-back vocals. The mighty Hammond organ playing of the late Rob Collins, however, set the Charlatans apart from the countlessStone Roses-inspired UK bands of the '90s. Although the Charlatans moved away from such influences with each successive album, their sound has remained fairly consistent for close to a decade. Some of the many highlights collected on MELTING POP include the Chemical Brothers remix of "Patrol" and such loose-grooved college radio hits as "Can't Get Out Of Bed" and "Just Looking." While the Charlatans have never been innovators, they are a solid, entertaining band. The final track, a catchy fusion of Dylan and the Stones called "North Country Boy," suggests that they may be ready to take their music to the next level. SKU: 6548913
