Sound Of Music, The
This is the 30th Anniversary edition of the classic 1965 soundtrack. The track order has been reconfigured from the original release to better reflect the original film narrative. Principal cast: Julie Andrews (Maria); Christopher Plummer (The Captain); Peggy Wood (Mother Abbess); Dan Truhitte (Rolf); Charmain Carr (Leisl); Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich); Heather Menzies (Louisa); Duane Chase (Kurt); Angela Cartwright (Brigitta); Debbie Turner (Marta); Kym Karath (Gretl). Producer: Neely Plumb. Reissue producer: Paul Williams. Includes liner notes byMichael Mattesino. All tracks have been digitally remastered. One of the best-selling albums of all time, the original soundtrack for the film version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's THE SOUND OF MUSIC is above all a showcase for the formidable talents of Julie Andrews. She plays the novitiate Maria, governess and eventual mother to the seven musically gifted children of the widower Captain Trapp. During the swinging '60s much was made of Andrews' ultra-wholesome image in both this film and Disney's Mary Poppins. What can't be denied is Andrews' uniquely British brand of down-to-earth charisma. From the first bird-chirping strains introducing the famous opening scene in which Maria sings the title song amongst the Alps, Andrews is in utter command of this material. She so ably enacts her character's belief in the redemptive power of music--the real theme of this last and most universal of Rodgers & Hammerstein's musicals--that her bright performances of the justly revered "My Favorite Things" and the singing lesson "Do-Re-Mi" are suffused with intelligence and conviction. Different Times (Lou Reed In The 70's)
Personnel includes: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); Mick Ronson (guitar); Caleb Quaye, Rick Wakeman, Steve Winwood. Producers include: Richard Robinson, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Godfrey Diamond, Bob Ezrin. Compilation producer: Paul Williams. Engineers: Ken Scott, Mike Stone, M. Stone, R. Moss. Includes liner notes by Greg McLean. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Between 1966 and 1970, Reed led the Velvet Underground. Reed's departure left a creative vacuum within the group. Two years passed before Lou Reed was released.David Bowie, oversaw Transformer, which captured a prevailing mood of decadence. Reed returned to the dark side with Berlin. It was followed by the sedate Coney Island Baby, Reed's softest, simplest collection to date, the inherent charm of which was diluted on Rock 'N' Roll Heart. Street Hassle displayed a rejuvenated power, resuming the singer's empathy with New York's subcultures. The Bells and Growing Up in Public, failed to scale similar heights, but offered a new-found sense of maturity. The Blue Mask was another purposeful collection and set a pattern for the punchy, concise material found on Legendary Hearts and Mistrial. New York was a splendid return to form and created considerable interest in his back-catalogue. Songs For 'Drella was a haunting epitaph for Andy Warhol on which Reed collaborated with John Cale, and the downbeat mood carried over to the superb Magic And Loss, an album inspired by the death of legendary songwriter Doc Pomus. In 1993 Reed joined together with his legendary colleagues for a high-profile Velvet Underground reunion. SKU: 3101398

Strategies Against Architecture Vol.1
STRATEGIES AGAINST ARCHITECTURE is a compilation of the group's work from 1980 to 1983, and includes tracks from their first 7" singles, their LP KOLLAPS, rare vinyl EPs, and previously unreleased live tracks. Compilation producers: Einsturzende Neubauten, Jim Thirlwell. STRATEGIES AGAINST ARCHITECTURE is a compilation of early tracks by Einsturzende Neubauten. The disc includes material from the band's first EP (SCHWARZ) and LP (KOLLAPS) along with a few b-sides and live versions. On these tracks, Neubauten uses an orchestra of everything from traditional rock instruments to power tools and smashing glass. The record opens with an extended peal of feedback that sets the tone of the entire record. If Lou Reed had taken his METAL MACHINE MUSIC beyond the stage of free-form noise sculpture and added jackhammers and an assortment of chants, wails, and screams (in German) he might have come close to STRATEGIES. As it stands, Neubauten's early work is about as extreme as music can get before it becomes nothing more than noise. All of STRATEGIES' songs are classics of industrial music. The eerie, slow "Stahlversion" features percussion in the form of drumming on the struts of a hollow bridge. "Negative Nein" is rhythmically constructed from the electronically altered sound of bubbling water and Blixa Bargeld's unearthly vocals and screams. "Kalte Sterene" is probably the closest that EN have ever gotten to traditional rock, though the vocals are so heavily echoed and multi-tracked that they overpower the simple beat patterns. Wide Awake In America
This includes live recordings and out-takes from the "Unforgettable Fire" tour and album, 1984-85. U2: Bono (vocals); Dave "The Edge" Evans (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Adam Clayton (bass); Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums). Producers: Tony Visconti, U2, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois. Engineers include: Kevin Killen, Ron St. Germain, Paul Thomas. Put together as a follow-up to the phenomenally successful THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE, the EP WIDE AWAKE IN AMERICA captures two of that album's finest cuts as recorded live. While the studio version of "Bad" displayed U2'strademark whisper-to-a-scream structure, the slow burn is extended even further in the live arena. "A Sort Of Homecoming" is given the same over-the-top dramatic treatment. Throughout, Bono soars, evoking a drama of near-biblical proportions atop the studied, controlled intricacies of the Edge's effect-laden soundscapes. As a bonus, the EP includes two previously unreleased tracks from THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE sessions ("Three Sunrises" and the rootsier "Love Comes Tumbling"), breathing new life into what was already a classic rock album. Education In Rebellion, An
Union Underground: Bryan Scott (vocals, guitar); Patrick Kennison (guitar); John Moyer (bass); Josh Memelo (drums). Producers: Bryan Scott, Patrick Kennison, Don Gilmore, Ulrich Wild. Engineers: Bryan Scott, Patrick Kennison, Don Gilmore. Recorded at The Studio Underground, San Antonio, Texas; Music Grinder Studios, Hollywood, California; NRG Studios, North Hollywood, California. The Union Underground aim to make you extremely uncomfortable. Their confrontational, profanity-laced lyrics, creepy vocals, claustrophobic arrangements, and churning, angular riffs are all designed to evoke a bleak, post-apocalyptic urban landscape. Equal parts hard rock, punk-metal, and industrial, the Union Underground's sound is a heavy, punishing one, their songs full ofdistaste for modern society and its hypocritical mores. This might make the group's music too much too take, were it not for the fact that their Alice In Chains-derived harmonies, post-grunge guitar hooks, and relentlessly hooky song structures offset the aural onslaught effectively. They lace these tracks with enough listenability to enable even casual listeners to brave the storm that is AN EDUCATION IN REBELLION. SKU: 1060813

Overkill
Includes liner notes by Steffan Chirazi. OVERKILL stands as one of Motorhead's greatest albums, an all-time heavy metal classic. After creating a buzz amongst British headbangers with their 1977 self-titled album, Motorhead began seriously assaulting the U.K. charts with this breakout sophomore hit, which was produced by the Rolling Stones' former knob-twiddler Jimmy Miller. The songwriting and musical direction had become stronger and more focused, as evidenced by such raucous Motorhead classics as the title track, "Stay Clean," "Capricorn," "No Class," and the epic "Metropolis." OVERKILL began a string of hit European albums for the band, which would include such future metal gems as BOMBER, ACE OF SPADES, and NO SLEEP 'TIL HAMMERSMITH. SKU: 1054531

Scarlet's Walk
This Limited version of SCARLET'S WALK includes a bonus DVD disc. Personnel: Tori Amos (vocals, Boesendorfer piano, Wurlitzer piano, Fender Rhodes piano, ARP synthesizer); Robbie McIntosh (acoustic & electric guitars, dobro); David Torn (acoustic& electric guitars, loops); Mac Aladdin (acoustic & electric guitars); Sinfonia Of London (strings); John Philip Shenale (flute); David Jon Evans (bass); Matt Chamberlain (drums). Recorded at Martian Engineering, Cornwall, England and Sony Music Studios, London, England. The most instantly engaging, least cryptic (though still sometimes inscrutable) Tori Amos record since LITTLE EARTHQUAKES, SCARLET'S WALK is a welcome return to form. Ostensibly a grand concept album based on an American travelogue, the disc is, at its core, simply a collection of detailed relationship songs in the vein of early Joni Mitchell. The instrumentation is sparer than on Amos's last several efforts, effectively showcasing her supple piano work and uncharacteristically unmannered vocal performances. Many tracks feature nothing but bass, drums, piano and atmospheric guitar (courtesy of ex-Pretender Robbie McIntosh and avant garde jazzer David Torn) and this instrumentation gives the record an appropriately open, organic feel. Though there are, as usual, many moments of confrontational, biting humor here, SCARLET'S WALK reveals a somewhat kinder, gentler Tori Amos. Even "I Can't See New York," which appears to have been inspired by the September 11th attacks, seems more empathetic than angry, and is filled with wistful introspection. Though it lacks anything resembling a hit single, SCARLET'S WALK is a mature and fully realized work, easily ranking among Tori Amos's very best albums. SKU: 1076957

Elevator
Contains an untitled track of noise on track #13. Hot Hot Heat: Steve Bays (vocals, piano, organ); Paul Hawley (guitar, drums, percussion); Luke Paquin (guitar); Dustin Hawthorne (bass guitar); Dante DeCaro (drums). Recording information: Sound City, LosAngeles, California (2004). Taking late-1970s/early-'80s acts such as XTC and the Jam as inspiration, Hot Hot Heat mixes formidable melodies, post-punk aggression, New Wave quirkiness, and a contemporary indie-rock sensibility into an irresistible package. ELEVATOR is Hot Hot Heat's major-label debut, and offers a streamlined take on the qualities heard on their excellent efforts MAKE UP THE BREAKDOWN and the KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK EP. The first two tracks after "Introduction," ("Running Out of Time" and "Goodnight Goodnight") practically knock the listener to the floor with their catchy hooks and exuberant energy. The group has honed its neo-New Wave attack to an economic precision on ELEVATOR. Most songs clock in at less than three minutes, and each balances tunefulness and spiky punk-pop vitality. The herky-jerky feel of the moody, chant-driven "Ladies and Gentlemen" and "You Owe Me an IOU," the album's first single, are particularly memorable. On this record, the band plays in the big leagues, and this is most apparent in the glossy production of the accessible ballad "Jingle Jangle." However, the memorable "Island of the Honest Man" and the anthemic "Pickin' It Up" should satisfy longtime fans of Hot Hot Heat's edgy sound. SKU: 6582785

Elegant Gypsy
DiMeola made his name as a member of Chick Corea's groundbreaking fusion supergroup Return To Forever, but it wasn't long before he embarked on a solo career, of which this album is the second installment. DiMeola takes the electric, rock-inflected jazz approach of John McLaughlin andmultiplies it exponentially, upping both the wattage and the speed. He offers a few lyrical acoustic passages (foreshadowing his later collaborations with Paco DeLucia [who guests here] and McLaughlin), but the focus of ELEGANT GYPSY is DiMeola's blistering, mile-a-minute electric fretwork. He spins out endless lines of death-defying sixteenth notes, sometimes in tandem with synth wizard Jan Hammer, over slightly funky rhythms that bear a hint of Latin influence. His thick, overdriven tone and superhuman abilities, displayed to their fullest here, make the Eddie Van Halens of the world look like underachievers. SKU: 1014317

Full performer name: Robert Randolph & The Family Band. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Robert Randolph (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, pedal steel guitar); Lenesha Randolph, Ricky Fowler (vocals); Danyel Morgan (acoustic & electric guitars, bass, background vocals); John Ginty (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Marcus Randolph (drums); Leon Mobley (percussion); Neal Casal, Candice Anderson (background vocals). Producers: Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Jim Scott. Recorded at Cello Studios, Los Angeles, California. Listening to the musical mastery displayed on UNCLASSIFIED, it's hard to believe this is only Robert Randolph's first studio album, arriving on the heels of his in-concert debut record LIVE AT THE WETLANDS. Randolphcomes out of the Sacred Steel tradition that mates gospel music with virtuosic pedal steel guitar playing. With the Family Band, he takes that sound a step further by incorporating the jam-band-friendly rock format that's found huge success with live audiences. By turns funky and bluesy, he weaves his fiery-but-lyrical steel lines in and around a groove-based rhythm section, through songs that leave plenty of room for instrumental prowess. The gospel rave-up aspect of it all is what gives UNCLASSIFIED such a distinctive feeling, giving the proceedings a particularly celebratory, somehow redemptive feeling. Whether you get the spirit or not, the bombs-away jamming that is the group's stock-in-trade is undeniably exciting, and Randolph's work is downright soulful. SKU: 1086280

In Person - Friday And Saturday Nights At The Black Hawk [Remastered]
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Wynton Kelly (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Jimmy Cobb (drums). Recorded live at the Blackhawk, San Francisco, California on April 21 & 22, 1961. Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason. VOL. I: Miles Davis' first live presentation of his working band took place at the noted San Francisco nightclub, the ambience of which may best be summed up by the proud words of its owner, Guido Caccienti: "I've worked and slaved for years to keep this place a sewer." "Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste. Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's old warhorse "Bye Bye Blackbird" and the easy-going ballad "All Of You," where he seems to particularly inspire a laid back bluesy Hank Mobley tenor solo. Mobley, never a Davis favorite, is not the fiery foil he relished, but his buttery tone and imperturbable lyric charm suit the slightly conservative tone of these performances. But in a long reading of "No Blues," Miles pointedly has Wynton Kelly testify briefly in response to his own, almost down home reading of a blues, before engaging Cobb in some talking rhythm exchanges. However, Kelly is capable of a gorgeous romantic approach, as in the lush chording which enlivens the closing "Love I've Found You." VOL. II: Much of the greatest live jazz has been recorded in homey dens of iniquity such as San Francsico's own Blackhawk, and from the opening blast of Monk's classic "Well You Needn't," through the dynamic overdrive of "Oleo," it's clear that the band and this Saturday night crowd are locked into the kind of positive, self-generating vibe that encourages vivid, risky improvisations. Prior to the departure of the classic Kelly-Chambers-Cobb rhythm section (the KIND OF BLUE team) in 1963, Miles was in the midst of his so-called show tune period, which consisted of jazz classics and pop tunes taken at brisk, swinging tempos, suffused in the same funky hard bop bluesiness of Mingus, Cannonball and Blakey's Messengers. The harmonic sophistication of his collaborations with Gil Evans notwithstanding, the more modern advances of Coltrane, Coleman and Taylor would have to wait for the arrival of the Hancock-Carter-Williams rhythm axis. SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE BLACKHAWK features some of this band's most engaging repertoire (plus some solos edited out of the originalrelease). After the coy, teasing lyricism SKU: 1084527

Sex Machine
Personnel: James Brown (vocals, piano, organ); Catfish Collins, Jimmy Nolen (guitar); Alphonso Kellum (guitar, bass); Kenny Poole (guitar); Alfred Ellis (alto saxophone); St. Clair Pinckney (tenor & baritone saxophones); Maceo Parker (tenor saxophone, organ); Robert McCollough, Eldee Williams (tenor saxophone); Clayton Gunnells, Richard Griffith, Darryl Jamison, Joseph Davis (trumpet); Fred Wesley (trombone); Bobby Byrd (organ, vocals); William "Bootsy" Collins, Charles Sherrell (bass); John Starks,Clyde Stubblefield, Melvin Parker (drums); Johnny Griggs (congas); Art Lopez (percussion); Marva Whitney, Robert Graham, Jerry Shearin (background vocals). Recorded between June 1969 and July 1970. Live tracks recorded at Bell Auditorium, Augusta, Georgia on October 1, 1969. Originally released as King double LP (KS 7 1115). Includes liner notes by Harry Weinger. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Polygram Studios). Contains 2 LPs on 1 CD/cassette. Although the CD was supposedly "Recorded live at home in Augusta, Georgia with his bad self," these recordings come from two different sources: a live concert recorded at Augusta's Bell Auditorium in 1969, and a series of studio recordings that were doctored with audience noises and applause. The record, long considered a soul classic, actually features two different bands. The concert recordings feature Brown's band from the 1960s, while the studio songs feature Brown's then-new band, powered by Bootsy Collins on bass and Pelps "Catfish" Collins on guitar. Whether these recordings are "live" or not is really not the point; Brown has never sung a calculated note in his life, and one would be hard-pressed to distinguish whether one of Brown's trademark howls was recorded in a studio or onstage. His scat singing on "Brother Rapp" sure sounds live. As the furious, barely one-minute-long "I Got the Feelin'" segues into the pure funky adrenaline rush of "Give it Up or Turnit A Loose," it is nearly impossible to keep still. The groove is that infectious. Surprisingly, the title track is not the hit single version of "Sex Machine," but rather an extended, more leisurely rendition. SKU: 1005241

Sinatra's Sinatra (A Collection Of Frank's Favourites)
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle (conductor). Includes liner notes by Benny Green. Was it a willful move for Sinatra to look back on his own recording career and determine the highlights? Was it presumptuous of him to try to judge his own work, distilling countless songs down to a favored few for inclusion here? Not when you've got the kind of savvy and artistic instinct Sinatra has. The tunes he picked for this album, all featuring the arrangements of Nelson Riddle, are indeed representative. More than that, they take listeners through a guided tour of Sinatra's way with a song. You travel from the jazzy phrasing of "I've Got You Under My Skin" to the romantic pathos of "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning,"taking in the breadth of Sinatra's artistry, and marveling at the seamless combination of singer and orchestra achieved by Riddle. In The City
The Jam: Paul Weller (vocals, guitar); Bruce Foxton (vocals, bass); Rick Buckler (drums). In the Year of Punk, the Jam's exploded onto the music scene with this seminal debut album. The raw, unfettered aggression of the band's approach was well in keeping with the spirit of the times, but the heart of their songs and sound lay in the mod movement of the mid-'60s (early Who, Creation, etc.). Singer/guitarist Paul Weller comes off like a cross between Joe Strummer and the young Pete Townshend, bashing unreservedly through "Slow Down," one of the R&B tunes that inspired the original mods. Weller extols the virtues of frenzied dancing and nonconformist youth culture ("Non-Stop Dancing," "Away From the Numbers") over the raging three-chord attack of bassist Bruce Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler. The pure punk insouciance of his words |
