Mama Too Tight
Personnel: Archie Shepp (tenor saxophone); Tommy Turrentine (trumpet); Grachan Moncur III, Roswell Rudd (trombone); Howard Johnson (tuba); Perry Robinson (clarinet); Charlie Haden (bass); Beaver Harris (drums). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on August19, 1966. Originally issued as Impulse AS-9134. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson at MCA Music Media Studios. This is part of Impulse's The New Thing series. MAMA TOO TIGHT was the fourth and most radical of the albums Archie Shepp recorded for Impulse in the sixties. Overseeing an octet made up of 2 trombones, tuba, clarinet, trumpet, bass and drums as well as his own tenor, Shepp pays homage to Duke Ellington and James Brown in his witty, colorful writing for brass/reeds and funky ensemble work (cf. the title track.) The extended free-form opening of the massive side-long "A Portrait Of Robert Thompson (As A Young Man)" leaves a slightly different impression however. Here Shepp enters the raucous free space previously occupied by Albert Ayler and Coltrane's ASCENSION. The relentless hard blowing can be overwhelming so it is a relief when the gentler strains of Ellington's "Prelude To A Kiss" enter, followed by a comical but sharp version of "The Break Strain-King Cotton" march. Shepp had the best sense of humor of any modern jazz player and it is displayed brilliantly in the shifts and juxtapositions of "Robert Thompson" and the closing "Basheer," a slightly less ambitious tone poem. The 20 bit re-mastering job allows Shepp's breathy, gritty tenor saxophone work to shine. SKU: 1011542

This Is Easy (The Best Of Marshall Crenshaw)
Personnel includes: Marshall Crenshaw (vocals, various instruments, guitar, mandoguitar, keyboards, 6-string bass, percussion); Sonny Landreth (slide guitar); Steve Fishell, David Lindley (steel guitar); Peter Case (harmonica); Mitch Easter (piano); Bob Marlette (organ); Mitchell Froom (keyboards); Chris Donato (bass, background vocals); Fernando Saunders, Faye Hunter, Graham Maby, Tony Levin, David Miner (bass); Kenny Aronoff (drums, percussion); Robert Crenshaw (drums, background vocals); Mickey Curry, Jerry Marotta (drums); T-Bone Burnett (programming, background vocals); Rosie Flores, Don Dixon, Brad Jones, Andy York, The BoDeans, Tom Teeley, Steven Soles (background vocals). Producers include: Marshall Crenshaw, Alan Betrock, T-Bone Burnett, Ed Stasium, Mitch Easter. Compilation producers: Gary Stewart, Marshall Crenshaw. Engineers include: Thom Panunzio, Bill Jackson, Suzy Pink. Recorded between 1982 & 1996.Includes liner notes by Cub Koda, Gary Stewart, David Gorman & Marshall Crenshaw. Digitally remastered by Greg Calibi. Prior to the release of his 1982 debut album, Marshall Crenshaw had been in the cast of BEATLEMANIA (playing the part of John Lennon). Full of pop smarts, that album was a breath of fresh air, drawing on '60s sources without being a bit retro. Millions of others also cut their teeth on British Invasion bands, but for Crenshaw, it became part of his musical foundation, which is why it doesn't sound like he's aping his idols. A first class songwriter, this compilation is a wonder tour through nearly two decades of Crenshaw's recordings. He's a topflight songwriter, graced with a friendly voice, wise producers, and energetic accompaniment. This is an essential title, a keystone in any collection of exuberant rock music. In a better world all of these songs would have been hits. Also recommended are his self-titled debut and #447 from 1999. SKU: 1043338

Hair Of The Dog
Although Nazareth had already broken into the big time in Englandwith their 1973 release RAZAMANAZ, the band had yet to crack the U.S. market. Their stateside break came two years later in the form of 1975's HAIR OF THE DOG. By keeping to their high voltage rock formula the Scots band finally won U.S. rock fans over, though it didn't hurt that they included one slight musical departure, the melodic ballad "Love Hurts." Besides becoming a monster worldwide hit, Nazareth (for better or worse) helped create the whole power ballad format--a style adopted wholesale by numerous other bands by the late '80s. But besides "Love Hurts," HAIR OF THE DOG is a red-blooded hard rock set, as evidenced by songs such as the title track, "Miss Misery," "Changin' Times," and "Beggars Day." SKU: 1070644

Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, The
Pink Floyd: Syd Barrett (vocals, guitar); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Rick Wright (piano, organ); Nick Mason (drums). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England. Pink Floyd's debut was its only recording based on the vision of founding singer/guitarist Syd Barrett, an art student whose world revolved around music, mysticism, and liberal doses of hallucinogens. The band's moniker was taken from the first names of Georgia bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council (an album of theirs was a favorite of Barrett's), and the album's title came from a chapter of Kenneth Grahame's children's classic, THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS (also a staple of Barrett's library). Recorded at Abbey Road at the same time The Beatles were cutting SGT. PEPPER, PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN is an avant-garde pastiche of trippy improvisation and snappy pop snippets--a blurring of musical borders that went far beyond what the Fab Four were doing a couple of rooms away. (Producer Norman Smith had been The Beatles' chief engineer for much of the early '60s.) Instrumental space-jams like "Pow R. Toc H." and "Interstellar Overdrive" smashed the conventionality of the pop mainstream by opening up traditional song structures, as bits of Rick Wright's reverb-soaked Farfisa organ and Barrett's scratchy guitar float in and out of the mix. The other side of Barrett's musical expression was an ability to write shorter "pop" songs that were similar to traditional fare only in length--acid-fueled observations of aSiamese cat on "Lucifer Sam," and child-like tales on "The Gnome" and "Bike." Hooray For Boobies
Personnel: Jimmy Pop (vocals, Moog synthesizer, samples); D.J. Q-Ball (vocals, scratches, DJ); Jimmy Pop, Chasey Lain (vocals); Bloodhound Gang (rap vocals); Lupus Thunder (guitar); Derron Nuhfer (saxophone); Tavis Werts (trumpet); Rich Balling (trombone); Jared"Evil" Hasselhoff (bass); Spanky G, Darrin "Dangerous" Pfeiffer (drums). This is a terrific follow-up to Jimmy Pop Ali's breakthrough album, ONE FIERCE BEER COASTER, and one of the singer/songwriter's most intriguing collections of songs yet. HOORAY FOR BOOBIES is a collection of tongue-and-cheek tracks that includes such songs as "Vagina," "Mope," and "A Lap Dance Is So Much Better When the Stripper Is Crying." The clever writer works his cutting-edge humor over rocking instrumental backgrounds. The jewel of HOORAY FOR BOOBIES is a slick song called "Bad Touch," which plumbs the depths of the sorts of mating scenes common on the Discovery Channel. The track has touches of European synth pop mixed with a base of keyboards and drum programming. Other standouts include "Most Likely to Suck," "Take the Long Way Home," and the power-pop guitar explosion "Hell Yeah." SKU: 1031631

Simple Songs Of Freedom (The Tim Hardin Collection)
SIMPLE SONGS OF FREEDOM: THE TIM HARDIN COLLECTION is part of Columbia/Legacy's Common Chord series. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Along with Bob Dylan, Eric Andersen, and a host of others, Tim Hardin changed the public's notion of songwriting in the '60s with innovative, idiosyncratic compositions and recordings that furthered the burgeoning folk-rockmovement. By the time the '70s rolled around, he'd moved to the U.K., where he distanced himself both stylistically and geographically from his folkie roots. Hardin's '70s albums, from which the tracks on this compilation are drawn, generally boast a bigger, glossier production and an increased reliance on outside material. When the arrangements didn't overwhelm the songs, Hardin was still able to make magic happen, as on his fragile, tear-inducing version of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" or his transformative take on Jesse Winchester's "Yankee Lady." Though this period of Hardin's career is generally overlooked, this collection shows that it is also underrated. SKU: 1006653

Regatta De Blanc [Remastered] [ECD]
The Police: Sting (vocals, bass); Stewart Copeland (vocals, drums); Andy Summers (guitar). Recorded at Surrey Sound Studio,England. The career of the Police was planned, controlled and timed to perfection. The three talented individuals probably always knew that they would attempt to conquer the world and then disappear to pursue their own musical interests. This is the second of their five albums and contains two number 1 hits. Both are interesting little vignettes from the mind of Sting; 'Walking On The Moon', where he pleads 'I hope my legs don't break', and 'Message In A Bottle', which has a similarly desperate theme, with Sting observing 'seems I'm not alone in being alone, 100 billion castaways looking for a home'. Sting's theories do still hold water. SKU: 1085284

Wavelength [Remastered]
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, acoustic guitar, saxophone, electric piano); Herbie Armstrong (acoustic& electric guitars); Mitch Dalton (Spanish guitar); Bobby Tench (electric guitar, background vocals); Peter Bardens (horns, keyboards, synthesizer); Mickey Feat, Kuma (bass); Peter Van Hooke (drums); Ginger Blake, Laura Creamer, Linda Dillard (background vocals); Garth Hudson. Originally released on Warner Bros. All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original master tapes. The most commercially accessible of Van Morrison's '70s albums, WAVELENGTH is not an artistic compromise, but rather an expansion of Morrison's sound beyond the blues-based, horn-band approach. With the keyboard work of Camel's Peter Bardens and The Band's Garth Hudson, the arrangements take a step toward rock's electronic future without breaking Morrison's well-established ties to it's past. Basically a continuation of the ideas explored on the previous year's aptly titled A PERIOD OF TRANSITION, the album relies largely on groove-heavy '70s-style R&B tunes that overflow with soul, like "Hungry For Your Love" and "Take It Where You Find It." The title tune, which proved to be quite radio-friendly, points the way to new pop directions. SKU: 1003212

Greatest Hits
All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of A&M Records' Backlot series. Not to be confused with the 1975 release of the same name, Nazareth's GREATEST HITS collection from 1996 expands the original's meager 12 tracks to a meaty 18 cuts clocking in at more than 72 minutes. The Scottish band's bluesy heavy metal made them one of the '70s top hard rock acts, and all their major rockers and power ballads can be found here. Among these are the roaring rocker "Hair of the Dog" (a song that Guns N' Roses would cover on their 1993 all covers album, THE SPAGHETTI INCIDENT),"Expect No Mercy," "Razamanaz," "Broken Down Angel," "Shanghai'd in Shanghai," and of course, the proto-power ballad "Love Hurts." GREATEST HITS covers all the bases, making it an essential purchase for Nazareth fans everywhere. SKU: 4126290

Do It For Love
Hall & Oates: Daryl Hall (vocals, electric guitar, keyboards); John Oates (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel includes: T-Bone Wolf (acoustic guitar, bass); Sheppard (acoustic guitar, programming, sequencing); Todd Rundgren (acoustic & electric guitars); Billy Mann, Greg Fitzgerald (acoustic guitar); Jeff Catania, Mike Shimshack (electric guitar); David Sancious (keyboards); Jack Daly (bass); Mickey Curry (drums); Kenny Gioia (drums, percussion, programming, sequencing); Greg Bieck (programming, sequencing). Recorded at A Pawling Studios, Pawling, New York and at Protopia Studios, New York, New York. Sure, there's been a lot of water under the bridge since such '80s Hall & Oates hits as "You Make My DreamsCome True," let alone '70s classics like "She's Gone" and "Rich Girl." That doesn't mean that Daryl & John can't still come out swinging in the 21st century. Songs like "Forever For You" and the title track of DO IT FOR LOVE are remarkable in a couple of ways. Not only do they maintain the same kind of blue-eyed-soul flavor that made the Philadelphia duo famous, but in fact they're closer to the sound of classic '70s soul than many of the artists contemporaneously being hailed as "neo-soul" traditionalists. Amazingly, the pair's silky-soulful vocal blend and pop songwriting acumen seem not to have lost a step since their glory days. SKU: 1080011

Fistful Of Alice, A
Personnel: Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie (vocals); Reb Beach (guitar, background vocals); Ryan Roxie, Slash, Sammy Hagar (guitar); Paul Taylor (keyboards, guitar); Todd Jensen (bass, background vocals); Jimmy DeGrasso (drums). Recorded live at Cabo Wabo Cantina, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on June 2, 1996, and at A&M Studios and Phase Four Recording, Tempe, Arizona. Well, he's baaa-aaack! Yup, one of the originators of punk rock is back all right, live, loud, and "Lost in America." This is a live disc, and fans won't be disappointed: all the old gems are here, those bedrock tunes from the '70s. You remember, the hard rock we tried so hard todance to back in Junior High (we couldn't, most of the time, so a lot of air guitar was played while the girls did their best not to throw up on our patent leather shoes...) are all here. "Eighteen," "School's Out" (a true greasy American teenage anthem if there ever was one), even "Only Women Bleed" (he wrote it in a sentimental moment, and it went on to become perhaps his best-known tune). The band is solid, and Ryan Roxie's guitar has just the right mix of edgy tunefulness and all-out three-chord power. Guns and Roses' Slash makes a guest appearance. SKU: 1000917

V [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Enhanced portion includes a music video for "Simple Creed." Live: Ed Kowalczyk (vocals, guitar); Chad Taylor (guitar); Patrick Dahlheimer (bass); Chad Gracey (drums). Additional personnel: Tricky (vocals); Adam Kowalczyk (guitar, background vocals); Eric Gorfain (violin); John Krovoza (cello); Michael Railo (keyboards, background vocals); Shawn Williams (bass); Adam Duritz, Natasha Schneider (background vocals); Alain Johannes. Producers: Live, Alain Johannes, Michael Railo, Glen Ballard. Principally recorded at 11 AD Studios, Hollywood, California. Following up the didactic pretensions of THE DISTANCE TO HERE, Live steps back a bit on V and instead infuses a bit more experimentation into their normally straightforward post-grunge sturm-and-drang thanks to production help from Eleven's AlainJohannes. These changes jump out right from the one-two punch of "Intro" and "Simple Creed" with its backwards-masked guitar and sinister-sounding vocals from guest Tricky. The rap-rock of "Deep Enough" captures a Limp Bizkit-like rhythmic flow without resorting to lyrical inanities. Ed Kowalczyk's interest in non-Western culture continues to provide musical cues whether it's the sitar and tabla woven into the churning groove of "The Ride" or the Middle Eastern rhythms looped into the hard-hitting "Deep Enough." Interestingly enough, Kowalczyk addresses his band's socially conscious image with "People Like You," a thudding rocker with Qawwali-flavored harmonies that mentions a dream featuring his band alongside Bono, Bruce Springsteen, and Michael Stipe. Best of all is the gorgeous, piano-driven "Overcome," an anthem of optimism needed in the wake of the World Trade Center tragedy that occurred the week before V's release. SKU: 1066768

Alma Caribena [SACD]
Personnel includes: Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz, Jose Feliciano (vocals); Rene L. Todelo (12-string acoustic & Spanish guitars, cuatro); Sal Cuevas (acoustic guitar, acoustic & electric basses, background vocals); Manny Lopez (guitar, requinto); Justo L. Rivera (guitar); Yomo Toro (quatro); Nelson Gonzalez (tres); Luis R. Torres (flute, baritone saxophone); Nestor Torres (flute); Ejidio Cuadrado (accordion); Hernan "Teddy" Mulet (trumpet, trombone, background vocals); Jorge Torres (trumpet); Papo Lucca (piano); Pedro Perez Rivera, Nicky Orta (bass); Jorge A. Padilla (bongos, congas); Daniel Lopez (congas, timbales); Edwin Bonilla (timbales, guira, maracas, percussion); Robert Blades, Wendy Pederson, Angie Chirino (background vocals). Producers include: Emilio Estefan, Jr., Robert Blades, George Noriega, Randall Barlow, Rene L. Toledo. Engineers include: Scott Canto, Sebastian Krys, Javier Garza. "No Me Dejes De Querer" won the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Music Video and was nominated for Best Tropical Song. ALMA CARIBENA won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album. ALMA CARIBENA won the 2001 Billboard Latin Music Award for Female Tropical/Salsa Album of the Year. ALMA CARIBENA is surely Gloria Estefan's most uncompromisingly Latino roots record since 1995's ABRIENDO PUERTAS. Unlike the latter though, which takes a more Pan-Latin American approach to tradition, ALMA CARIBENA steers decidedly toward the island of Cuba. The tasty lineup of top-notch producers (Emilio Estefan, Jr., Rene Toledo), songwriters (Robert Blades, the Estefans) and distinguished guests (Celia Cruz, Papo Lucca) makes for a classy dose of roots pop. Gloria opens the sumptuous bolero, "Por Un Beso," with a primal cry of desperation that awakens the romantic senses. Papo Lucca commands a lush big band chart filled with thrilling stop-starts and snappy trombone, tres and piano solos. "Punto De Referencia," sets out as a dreamy, pared-down acoustic love tune overflowing with water imagery, before taking off into a full-blown salsa passage. "SoloPor Tu Amor" continues in the same pop-bolero vein, with a rosy twist of flute and strings and the delightful accordion of Egidio Cuadrado (of Carlos Vives fame). Jose Feliciano joins Gloria for an amicable duet on "Tengo Que Decirte Algo," while the regal Celia Cruz joins in on "Tres Gotas," a fun salsa take on grandmothers and their old-world ways. What's Bin Did And What's Bin Hid [Remastered]
Personnel: Donovan (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Gypsy Dave (kazoo); Brian Looking (bass); Skip Alan (drummer). Includes liner notes by Lorne Murdoch. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The Donovan most people are familiar with is the cosmic flower child who gave us such hits as "Sunshine Superman" and "Mellow Yellow." But in 1965, Donovan's music was in a much different stage of development. As heard on his first full-length album WHAT'S BIN DID AND WHAT'S BIN DID, Donovan's early sound was a very basic folk-revival approach heavily influenced by the likes of WoodyGuthrie (whose "Car Car" is here), Ramblin' Jack Elliott (who had became something of a cult figure in the UK), and of course, Bob Dylan, to whom the young Donovan was compared ad nauseam by the British press. Straight-ahead folkie tunes such as "Josie" and "Remember the Alamo" rub shoulders with the jug-band blues "Keep on Truckin'" and the downbeat, jazzy "Cuttin' Out." The best-known song here is "Catch the Wind," a romantic ballad that became one of Donovan's early staples. While the youthful singer-songwriter sounds confident and impressive here, this was but the first chapter of a story that would take some interesting twists and turns over the course of the next few years. Anthology Vol.1 (Cowboy Man)
Personnel includes: Lyle Lovett (vocals, acoustic guitar); Mac McNally (acoustic guitar); Dean Parks, Brent Rowan, Ray Herndon (electric guitar); Billy Williams (Spanish guitar); Paul Franklin, Tom Mortensen (steel guitar); Mark O'Connor (mandola, fiddle); SamBush (mandolin, background vocals); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); John Hagen (cello); Matt Rollings (piano); Viktor Krauss, Matthew McKenzie, Leland Sklar (bass); Paul Leim, Jeff Borree, Eddie Bayers (drums); Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, Francine Reed, Harry Stinson, Jon Randall,J. David Sloan (background vocals). Producers: Tony Brown, Lyle Lovett, Billy Williams. Compilation producer: Jessie Noble. Recorded at Ocean Way Recording and Sound Stage Studio, Nashville, Tennessee; Chaton Recordings, Scotsdale, Arizona. "San Antonio Girl" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. As its title implies, this collection is drawn from quirky Texan singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett's first three albums, effectively chronicling his '80s output. The pot is sweetened by two new songs; "The Truck Song" is characteristically wry, juxtaposing hardcore-country imagery with references to Wim Wenders and Paris, while "San Antonio Girl" is a Western swing nod to Bob Wills. The nearly identical melodies of the two songs are plainly intentional, if still inexplicable. The bulk of ANTHOLOGY finds Lovett cementing his legend during the most overtly country-sounding period of his career. He applies the lessons learned from country-folk songwriting mentors Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark to a more postmodern, ironic style that's also informed by Randy Newman. When Lovett adds a sarcastic sucker-punch to a scenario rife with honky-tonk tropes on "God Will," or turns the story-song "L.A. County" into an implied murder ballad, he's showing off both his modern narrative skill and his old-school country chops. Kudos as well to ANTHOLOGY for favoring the more obscure cuts from Lovett's breakthrough third album and eschewing the overplayed hits. SKU: 1068075

Common One [Remastered]
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals); Mick Cox, Herbie Armstrong (guitar); John Allair (keyboards); David Hayes (bass); Peter Van Hooke (drums); Pete Brewis (background vocals). Engineers: Henry Lewy, Dave Burgess, Chris Martin. Recorded at Super Bear Studios, France, on February 11-19, 1980. Van's 1980 release COMMON ONE is more in the meditative and poetic tradition of his masterpiece ASTRAL WEEKS than the R&B-infused pop ditty mode of a MOONDANCE or the Irish-country flair of a TUPELO HONEY. It captures the visionary songwriter/performer at the tail endof his pastoral phase. The album's expansive, cerebral approach is highlighted by two fifteen-minute excursions that almost act as bookend pieces--"Summertime In England" and "When The Heart Is Open"--both worthy compositions in their own right. Although it's not prime Morrison, COMMON ONE's highly literate lyrical content and atmospheric moodiness make for good listening nevertheless. SKU: 1003324

Roger The Engineer
This 31 track collection features the original 12 track album from 1966 in a mono version, then the entire album in a stereo version, including 5 bonus single tracks by Keith Relf, as well as 2 mono tracks that open the disc. By the time the Yardbirds recorded ROGER THE ENGINEER in 1966, the British Invasion was in full swing. Like their brethren, they targeted Chicago blues as ground zero for musical inspiration. As a result, most Yardbirds recordings and live sets were chock full of numbers by the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson, Chuck Berry and Elmore James. ROGER was a departure for the band, as all the material was self-penned. With guitarist Jeff Beck leading the charge (having replaced departedblues purist Eric Clapton), the Yardbirds began exploring the possibilities of electric guitar and of rock in general. The Middle Eastern garage rock of "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" bumps up against the rockabilly swing of "Jeff's Boogie." Alongside Beck's thrilling guitar histrionics, there's the genteel English pastoral feel of "Farewell" and a quirky instrumental bubbling over with jazz bass, a rubbery-sounding beat and chanting ("Hot House Of Omagarashid.") Give 'em Enough Rope [Remastered]
The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (vocals, bass); Topper Headon (drums). Engineers include: Dennis Ferranti, Gregg Caruso, Chris Mingo. Digitally remastered by Ray Staff & Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios). Sensing the emollient rattle of punk was an artistic dead end, the Clash took an abrupt volte-face and invited American Sandy Pearlman toproduce their second album. Respected for his work with Blue Oyster Cult and the Dictators, Pearlman introduced a sheen that disturbed purists but introduced the Clash to a wider audience. The clear sound brought a new emphasis to the quartet's internal interplay and allowed the material to stand up in its own right. GIVE EM ENOUGH ROPE contains several of the band's most popular songs, which range from the defiant "Tommy Gun" to the sensitive "Stay Free," a contrast confirming the Clash's wider musical ambitions.
