Greatest Hits
Contains previously unreleased material. Boston: Tom Scholz (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, electric piano, keyboards, organ, bass, drums, special effects); Brad Delp (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, percussion); Fran Cosmo, David Sikes (vocals); Kimberly Jorgensen (spoken word); Barry Goudreau (guitar); Fran Sheehan (bass, percussion); Sib Hashian (drums, percussion); Jim Maseda (drums). Recorded at Foxglove Studios, Watertown, Massachusettes in winter 1975; Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California; The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California in spring 1976. When Boston's self-titled debut landed in the Top 5 in 1976, their combination of powerful lead and background vocals, up-front guitars and slick production made the world safe for corporate rock. Twenty years hence, Boston mastermind/studio geek Tom Scholz has been releasing records and touring on an average of once every seven years, going through a handful of vocalists and engaging in major court battles for recording freedom. All this leads up to the GREATEST HITS package, a mixture of old and new Bostonthat is like a time capsule of '70s rock riffs. An Up-With-People message found in the newer material ties in with Scholz's support of PETA, evidenced by pictures of photogenic animals dotting the CD booklet. SKU: 1003653

Sunday 8pm
Faithless: Jaime Catto (vocals, guitar); Maxi Jazz (vocals); Dave Randall (guitar); Sister Bliss (keyboards). Additional personnel: Rachael Brown, Boy George, Dido (vocals); Paulie (guitar); Andy Gangadene (drums); Sudha (percussion); Rollo, Ibi Tijani (programming); DJ Swamp (scratches); Pauline Taylor, Imani Saleem, Shannon Stewart (background vocals). Engineers: Phill Brown, Nick Kirkland, Goetz. Recorded at Swanyard Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Rollo. Faithless enhances its reputation as a purveyor of great music, dance or otherwise, demonstrating an uncommon ability to blend musical styles into a coherent album. SUNDAY 8PM is a very emotional record- sometimes euphoric and confident, at other times paranoid and fragile Vocalists play a large part in this. Boy George proves barely recognisable in his guest spot on the tender and pleading "Why Go," while Faithless rapper Maxi Jazz offers such choice verbal cuts as the brooding "Bring My Family Back" and the uplifting Euro house of "God is a DJ." The instrumental tracks are no less effective. SUNDAY 8PM opens with a moment of lush, blissed-out piano music. The majestic "Take the Long Way Home," led by a gorgeous cello melody, is outstanding. Another track even samples Erik Satie. It all adds up to provide a revealing snapshot of musical trendsat the turn of the century. This is a remarkable record, unanimously acclaimed in the British press as a landmark album. SKU: 6482709

1000 Kisses
Personnel includes: Patty Griffin (vocals, guitar, finger cymbals); Emmylou Harris (vocals); Doug Lancio (electric & 12-string guitar, mandolin); Brian Standefer (cello); Michael Ramos (accordion); John Deaderick (piano); Giles Reaves (vibraphone, drums, djembe, bells); Dave Jaques (bass). Recorded at Doug's Basement, Nashville, Tennessee on April 21-27, 2001 and at Los Maranitas Studio, Austin, Texas on May 17 & 18, 2001. 1000 KISSES was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Patty Griffin's success is either a testament to the eclecticism of the American music-buying public or to the success of the soundtrack to the movie OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU?1000 KISSES isn't a great departure for the Boston singer-songwriter--she's still singing the kind of perfectly formed mini-stories that inhabited her debut album, 1996's LIVING WITH GHOSTS. The main difference here is the assurance with which she presents her material--it's spare, sparsely orchestrated, mostly just acoustic guitar and bass, with the accent on her world-weary yet optimistic vocals and lyrics, eschewing the rock accompaniment of her previous album, FLAMING RED. Griffin's songs aren't particularly country-based, but more part of a long line of American folk music that spans both the omnipresent "Man of Constant Sorrow" and the songs of Lucinda Williams. She's equally at home with the cozy domesticity of "Making Pies" and the aching loneliness of "Rain," while the Latin-tinged "Mil Besos" (the 1000 kisses of the title) is a sultry delight. 1000 KISSES finds Patty Griffin settling in to her stride as a smart teller of stories old and new, big and small. This Is The Time (The Christmas Collection)
THIS IS THE TIME is also available in a 3-CD set with SNOWFALL and WHEN MY HEART FINDS CHRISTMAS. Personnel includes: Michael Bolton, Placido Domingo, Wynonna (vocals); Johnny Mandel (orchestra conductor); Ronn Huff (string conductor); Dan Shea, Walter Afanasieff (various instruments); Keith Thomas (guitar, piano); Dan Huff, Jerry McPherson, Dean Parks (guitar); Sam Bush (violin); Marc Russo (tenor saxophone); Ian Underwood (piano); Randy Kerber (electric piano); Phil Madeira (Hammond B-3 organ); Byron House (bass); Claytoven Richardson, Kitty Beethoven, Sandy Griffith, Jeanie Tracy, Conesha Owens, Darlene Coleman, Tina Gibson, Terrance Kelly, Brenda Roy, Anna Lisa Patterson, Cynthia Green, Andre Hughes, Nicolas Bearde, Larry Batiste, Miflin "Dooney" Jones, Ada Dyer, Chris Rodriguez, Audrey Wheeler (background vocals); Nashville String Machine. Producers include: Walter Afanasieff, Michael Bolton, Johnny Mandel, David Foster, Keith Thomas. Engineers include: Dana Jon Chappelle, Dave Reitzas, David Gleeson. These are the salient facts. The singer is Michael Bolton: chiseled cheekbones, superhuman lung power, worldwide superstardom. The holiday is Christmas: Santa Claus, mistletoe, peace on earth. The songs are holiday standards that go back farther than Bolton's hairline: "Silent Night," " Joy To The World," "White Christmas" and others. If any of the above appeal to you, THIS IS THE TIMEis likely to prick up your ears. If all of the above appeal to you, this album is a winter wish come true. Bolton covers all the yuletide bases on THIS IS THE TIME. There's a rocking version of "Santa Claus Is Coming Town," a solemn reading of "O Holy Night," there's even a duet with opera deity Placido Domingo on "Ave Maria" that finds Bolton testing his operatic chops alongside the master. In addition to the eight evergreens essayed by Bolton, there are two original songs co-authored by the singer (one with hitmaker Diane Warren). Both tunes sound very much at home nestled among these Christmas classics. Bolton fans could hardly dream of a better stocking stuffer. SKU: 1009329

S Club
S Club 7: Hannah, Rachel, Tina, Jo, Paul, Bradley, Jon. Additional personnel: Absolute (various instruments); Milton McDonald (guitar); The Kick Horns (horns); Steve Hilton (keyboards, programming); Anna Ross, Tracey Ackerman (background vocals). Producers include: Eliot Kennedy, Mike Percy, Tim Lever, Absolute, StarGate. Engineers: Paul P'Dub, Dean Murphy. In the cut-throat teen-pop supremacy stakes, the advantage of having your own television program can not be overestimated. Not only does it increase exposure, but it also allows the group to establish a vital sense of character that the likes of Steps and B*witched can only develop in a less direct fashion. Eschewing the standard songwriting teams for a variety of contributors, S CLUB 7 is certainly shot through with the same joie de vivre as the "Miami 7" show. Managed by Simon Fuller, S Club 7 shares the ability of his former proteges the Spice Girls to funnel a range of influences into a sound that is funky rather than derivative. Whilst the two Latin-flavoured efforts lack the conviction of "Spice Up Your Life," the seven-member outfit fulfils the Janet Jackson-meets-Spector quotient adeptly with "You're MyNumber One." S Club 7 is similarly at home with slower numbers, on the girls-only "I Really Miss You" and the gentle, glowing "Two in a Million." The recurring "na-na" refrains and the infectious "S Club Party" confirm S CLUB 7 as the soundtrack to seven kids having fun, which makes for unmistakably great pop. SKU: 1025035

Share My World

Kelly (vocals, various instruments); Rodney Jerkins (rap vocals, various instruments, programming); Lil' Kim, Nas, The Lox (rap vocals); Rich Nice (spoken vocals, programming); Ol' Dirty Bastard (spoken vocals); Babyface (various instruments, programming); Malik Pendleton (various instruments, background vocals); Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Fred Jerkins III (various instruments); Mike Scott, Michael Jordan, George Benson (guitar); Minio Class (Fender Rhodes); Joshua Milan, George R. "Golden Fingers" Pearson (keyboards); Nathan East (bass); Mr. Lee, Stephen George, Poke, Tone (programming); D.J. Do It All (scratches); La Tonya Blige-DaCosta, Mary Brown, Shanice Wilson, Stephanie (background vocals). Producers: Poke, Tone, Rich Nice, Rodney Jerkins, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Malik Pendleton, R. Kelly, Babyface, Bryce Wilson, Fred Jerkins III, James Mtume. Engineers: Rich Travali, Ben Garrison, Steve Hodge, Dexter Simmons, Ken Lewis, Stephen George, Chris Brickley, Rick Behrens, Brad Gilderman, Angela Piva, Tom Vercillo, Tony Maserati. SHARE MY WORLD was nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Uber-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis come aboard for this hip-hop diva's third album, but they don't take over the way they do with more impressionable singers. SHARE MY WORLD remains very much Mary J. Blige's album, featuring 17 tracks worth of the same bumpin' soul that has made her one of the premier singers of the '90s. Blige earned the title "queen of hip-hop soul" with her amazing blend of hip-hop beats and R&B vocals on her debut album, WHAT'S THE 411?, and then followed up with the equallystrong MY LIFE, which showed off a more personal side. On SHARE MY WORLD, she invites you to share a world of true success. When Blige sings, whether it be a ballad or a hip-hop track, she sings from the heart, both to and for her audience. Collaborating with R. Kelly, Nas, Lil' Kim, Bryce Wilson of Groove Theory and many more, she once again offers the best new music in her genre. It doesn't get better than this. SKU: 1000844

Devil Without A Cause
Personnel: Kid Rock (rap vocals). Twisted Brown Trucker: Joe C. (rap vocals); Kenny Olson, Jason Krause (guitar); Jimmy Bones (keyboards); Stefanie Eulinberg (drums); Kracker (DJ); Misty Love, Shirley Hayden (background vocals). Engineers: John Travis, Al Sutton, Kid Rock. Recorded at White Room Studios and Temple Of The Dog, Detroit, Michigan. "Bawitdaba" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. In the grand tradition of Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. genre-hopper Kid Rock chooses to lay down his raps over a bed of rock-oriented electric guitar riffs instead of traditional hip-hop tracks and beats. Unlike the aforementioned groups though, Kid Rock comes off more like an adventurous hip-hopper than a rocker with a Public Enemy jones. In an effort to prove himself as "street" as his more conventional rap peers, Rock combines his rockish arrangements with gangsta-derived lyrics full of boasts and sexual braggadocio. DEVIL WITHOUT A CAUSE will appeal to both rock fans in search of something different and hip-hop listenerswho like a little rock in their rap. SKU: 1017777

Morcheeba: Skye Edwards (vocals); Ross Godfrey (guitar, sitar, pedal & lap steel guitars, clavinet, Hammond B-3 organ, Fender Rhodes piano, Wurlitzer piano, synthesizers, bass, drums); Paul Godfrey (drums, programming, scratches); Pete Norris (keyboard programming, sound effects). Klein String Quartet: S. Bentley-Klein, L. Melhuish (violin); T. Grant (viola); R. Bridgemont (cello). Includes liner notes by The Gardener. Morcheeba is a band with all its bases covered. Brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey pull in opposite directions, with Ross handling the more organic range of instrumentation, from guitar to Hammond organ, while Paul takes care of programming and turntable work. Add to that formula the self-ordained "Sound Surgeon" Pete Norris and the cool, ethereal voice of singer Skye Edwards, whose quiet self-assurance provides a meeting ground for the eclectic sonic amalgam that is Morcheeba's BIG CALM. Burbling analog synths and gritty slide guitar dominate on "Part Of The Process," setting the pace for the wild diversity of sounds to follow. Serene keyboards and buzzing drum samples provide the unique backdrop for the timeless melody of "Blindfold." Lush string arrangements and beautiful fingerpicked guitar grace the close harmonies and confessional lyrics of "Over AndOver." Powerful string orchestration also lifts the ballad "Fear And Love." "Friction" features a deep reggae groove, a horn section and chatting by Spikey T. SKU: 1018107

Recorded in 1959 and 1961. Includes liner notes by Mark Humphrey. Digitally remastered by Larry Walsh (Capitol Recording Studios). This is part of The Capitol Blues Collection series. This album chronicles a 1959 Carnegie Hall bill shared between Muddy and Slim. In retrospect, it might be seen as something of a warm-up for Muddy, who would soon wow the world with the 1960 performance captured on his NEWPORT album. Muddy's style was much more primal and sensual than the more urbane, slightly Charles Brown-like sound of Peter Chatman (AKA Memphis Slim), but the two blues giants accompany each other here with sensitivityand taste. Slim dominates the proceedings, with 13 cuts to Muddy's four, and his sophisticated vocal and piano stylings are a joy to the ear. Conversely, Muddy's tunes lack the punch his customary sidemen gave them (he's backed by Al Hall and Shep Sheppard). Nevertheless, the singer was in his prime at this time, and it was seemingly impossible for him to come across as anything less than commanding. This disc is recommended chiefly to Memphis Slim fans, but it also provides an interesting (if brief) glimpse into Muddy's late-'50s live work. SKU: 1068141

Pulse
Also available on CD and cassette in a long box on Columbia (67063) and on CD and cassette in a brick-style slipcase on Columbia (67064). NOTES: Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards); Nick Mason (drums). Additional personnel: Tim Renwick (vocals, guitar); Dick Parry (saxophone); JonCarin (vocals, keyboards); Guy Pratt (vocals, bass); Gary Wallis (percussion); Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine, Durga McBroom (background vocals). Recorded live in Europe and The United Kingdom in 1994. It has never mattered which of Pink Floyd's leaders (Barrett, Waters, Gilmour) is at the controls, the band has always been about grandeur. The epic scale of their psychedelic explorations, the life-altering themes of their recordings, the ground-breaking, conceptual stagings, all have helped in the construction of the group's mythology. And more than any other rock band's, Pink Floyd myths have lived on and prospered even as the band and its fan-base have evolved with time. A live, double-album, PULSE works not only as a great extended postcard of 1994's biggest tour, but as Pink Floyd's myth re-charger. Consider the facts: the release was celebrated with a laser-light show atop the Empire State Building, and the spine of the CD package features a perpetually blinking light. But, as is always the case with Pink Floyd, there is reason to their madness. The blinking light harkens back to the heartbeat that is the unifying theme of their classic DARK SIDE OF THE MOON album, which is performed in its entirety on disc two. Disc one is an approximation of the band's first set, featuring a powerful run through Syd Barrett's "Astronomy Domine" (the definition of late '60s British psychedelia), as well as a host of songs from 1987's MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON and '94's DIVISION BELL. But the second set is the true keeper of the two. Having made its tour debut on the 25th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing (how's that for a myth?), DARK SIDE loses none of its glow when transferred to a live setting. David Gilmour ably handles Roger Waters' vocal parts, but escapes comparisons by throwing the focus on instrumental interludes that further the imagination--"On The Run," for instance, sounds like a true precursor to The Orb's ambient noodlings. Still, the radio hits ("Money," "Us And Them," "Brain Damage") are all re-interpreted enough to sound novel, but familiar enough to feel like ours. In this way, Pink Floyd are our own Homer, our own Jason & The Argonauts: their stories have been with us forever, but we never mind hearing them again. SKU: 1002970

Is There Anybody Out There (The Wall Live 1980-1981)
Pink Floyd: Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Richard Wright. Additional personnel: Snowy White, Andy Roberts (guitar); Peter Woods (keyboards); Andy Brown (bass); Willie Wilson (drums); John Joyce, Stan Farber, Jim Haas, Joe Chemay (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Gerald Scarfe, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Jonathan Park, Mark Fisher, James Guthrie, David Gilmore, Richard Wright. In releasing this two-CD live album of Pink Floyd's elaborate production, both the Roger Waters and David Gilmour-led camps almost atone for the bitter back-biting fans have endured throughout the '80s and '90s. As delivered by Waters, Gilmour, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and a smattering of back-up musicians, these renditions are a reminder of howtight this Floyd line-up could be. Among THE WALL's major themes are the character's mixed feelings over sex as revealed by "Young Lust," an overprotective mom and the hazards thereof in "Mother," and the decision of the musician's label to drug him up to perform in "Comfortably Numb." Two welcome but ephemeral songs cut from the original studio album, "What Shall We Do Now" and "The Last Few Bricks" are also included in this release of Waters' sprawling concept. Complimenting the crystalline acoustics of this classic performance is packaging including 64 pages of artwork and photos from the original shows, with liner notes by all four Floyd members, art director Gerald Scarfe, and the show's stage designers. 0304 [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Jewel Kilcher (vocals, guitar); Mark Oakley (acoustic guitars,Rusty Anderson, Dave Levita (electric guitar); Lisa Germano (violin, background vocals); Mike Bolger (accordion, trumpet, trombone); Lester A. Mendez (keyboards, sound effects); Patrick Warren (chamberlain); Paul Bushnell (bass); Abe Laboriel Jr. (snare drums, drums, percussion, sound effects); Greg Collins (sound effects). Producers include: Lester Mendez, Jewel Kilcher. Recorded at Conway Studios, Hollywood, California. Everybody's favorite Alaskan pop dame apparently spent the time between 2001's THIS WAY and 0304 distancing herself from her roots and closely studying the Britney-style teenpop phenomenon. Gone is the earnest, coffehouse folkie feel, replaced by squadrons of percolating synthesizers and snappy loops. Together with new writing partner/co-producer Lester Mendez, she seems to have worked out a way to mate Max Martin-style pop hooks with her own sometimes-introspective, sometimes-philosophical lyrics. There are plenty of songs that deal strictly with the vagaries of romance, but there's also "America," where Jewel gets overtly political, and "Stand," where she laments the failure of Woody Guthrie's visions in contemporary society. So while a casual listen might give the impression that yesterday's Jewel had become strictly a memory, there's a continuing lyrical thread on 0304 that extends like a dangling lifeline to the singer's old fans. Deguello
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar, baritone saxophone); Dusty Hill (vocals, tenor saxophone, bass); Frank Beard (alto saxophone, drums, percussion). ZZ Top took an extended break from the tour trail and the recording studio afterwrapping up the tour for its 1976 album, TEJAS. DEGUELLO (Spanish for 'beheading') was issued three years later, and continued the Texas trio's winning streak. Most ZZ Top fans consider DEGUELLO to be the last link to the band's characteristic early blues-rock; it moved to a more accessible sound with its '80s releases EL LOCO, ELIMINATOR, and AFTERBURNER. Ending the '70s on a high note for the band, DEGUELLO includes a pair of the group's biggest classic rock staples--the funky "Cheap Sunglasses," and the anthemic "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide." d SKU: 1014121
