When Boston's self-titled debut landed in the Top 5 in 1976, their combination of powerful lead and background vocals, up-front guitars and slick production made the world safe for corporate rock. Twenty years hence, Boston mastermind/studio geek Tom Scholz has been releasing records and touring on an average of once every seven years, going through a handful of vocalists and engaging in major court battles for recording freedom. All this leads up to the GREATEST HITS package, a mixture of old and new Bostonthat is like a time capsule of '70s rock riffs. An Up-With-People message found in the newer material ties in with Scholz's support of PETA, evidenced by pictures of photogenic animals dotting the CD booklet.

Faithless enhances its reputation as a purveyor of great music, dance or otherwise, demonstrating an uncommon ability to blend musical styles into a coherent album. SUNDAY 8PM is a very emotional record- sometimes euphoric and confident, at other times paranoid and fragile Vocalists play a large part in this. Boy George proves barely recognisable in his guest spot on the tender and pleading "Why Go," while Faithless rapper Maxi Jazz offers such choice verbal cuts as the brooding "Bring My Family Back" and the uplifting Euro house of "God is a DJ."
The instrumental tracks are no less effective. SUNDAY 8PM opens with a moment of lush, blissed-out piano music. The majestic "Take the Long Way Home," led by a gorgeous cello melody, is outstanding. Patty Griffin's success is either a testament to the eclecticism of the American music-buying public or to the success of the soundtrack to the movie OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU?1000 KISSES isn't a great departure for the Boston singer-songwriter--she's still singing the kind of perfectly formed mini-stories that inhabited her debut album, 1996's LIVING WITH GHOSTS. The main difference here is the assurance with which she presents her material--it's spare, sparsely orchestrated, mostly just acoustic guitar and bass, with the accent on her world-weary yet optimistic vocals and lyrics, eschewing the rock accompaniment of her previous album, FLAMING RED.
Griffin's songs aren't particularly country-based, but more part of a long line of American folk music that spans both the omnipresent "Man of Constant Sorrow" and the songs of Lucinda Williams. She's equally at home with the cozy domesticity of "Making Pies" and the aching loneliness of "Rain," while the Latin-tinged "Mil Besos" (the 1000 kisses of the title) is a sultry delight. 1000 KISSES finds Patty Griffin settling in to her stride as a smart teller of stories old and new, big and small.

Bolton covers all the yuletide bases on THIS IS THE TIME. There's a rocking version of "Santa Claus Is Coming Town," a solemn reading of "O Holy Night," there's even a duet with opera deity Placido Domingo on "Ave Maria" that finds Bolton testing his operatic chops alongside the master. In addition to the eight evergreens essayed by Bolton, there are two original songs co-authored by the singer (one with hitmaker Diane Warren). In the cut-throat teen-pop supremacy stakes, the advantage of having your own television program can not be overestimated. Not only does it increase exposure, but it also allows the group to establish a vital sense of character that the likes of Steps and B*witched can only develop in a less direct fashion. Eschewing the standard songwriting teams for a variety of contributors, S CLUB 7 is certainly shot through with the same joie de vivre as the "Miami 7" show.
Managed by Simon Fuller, S Club 7 shares the ability of his former proteges the Spice Girls to funnel a range of influences into a sound that is funky rather than derivative. Whilst the two Latin-flavoured efforts lack the conviction of "Spice Up Your Life," the seven-member outfit fulfils the Janet Jackson-meets-Spector quotient adeptly with "You're MyNumber One." S Club 7 is similarly at home with slower numbers, on the girls-only "I Really Miss You" and the gentle, glowing "Two in a Million." The recurring "na-na" refrains and the infectious "S Club Party" confirm S CLUB 7 as the soundtrack to seven kids having fun, which makes for unmistakably great pop.

In the grand tradition of Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. genre-hopper Kid Rock chooses to lay down his raps over a bed of rock-oriented electric guitar riffs instead of traditional hip-hop tracks and beats. Unlike the aforementioned groups though, Kid Rock comes off more like an adventurous hip-hopper than a rocker with a Public Enemy jones. In an effort to prove himself as "street" as his more conventional rap peers, Rock combines his rockish arrangements with gangsta-derived lyrics full of boasts and sexual braggadocio. DEVIL WITHOUT A CAUSE will appeal to both rock fans in search of something different and hip-hop listenerswho like a little rock in their rap.

Morcheeba is a band with all its bases covered. Brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey pull in opposite directions, with Ross handling the more organic range of instrumentation, from guitar to Hammond organ, while Paul takes care of programming and turntable work. This album chronicles a 1959 Carnegie Hall bill shared between Muddy and Slim. In retrospect, it might be seen as something of a warm-up for Muddy, who would soon wow the world with the 1960 performance captured on his NEWPORT album. Muddy's style was much more primal and sensual than the more urbane, slightly Charles Brown-like sound of Peter Chatman (AKA Memphis Slim), but the two blues giants accompany each other here with sensitivityand taste. Slim dominates the proceedings, with 13 cuts to Muddy's four, and his sophisticated vocal and piano stylings are a joy to the ear. Conversely, Muddy's tunes lack the punch his customary sidemen gave them (he's backed by Al Hall and Shep Sheppard). Nevertheless, the singer was in his prime at this time, and it was seemingly impossible for him to come across as anything less than commanding. This disc is recommended chiefly to Memphis Slim fans, but it also provides an interesting (if brief) glimpse into Muddy's late-'50s live work.

It has never mattered which of Pink Floyd's leaders (Barrett, Waters, Gilmour) is at the controls, the band has always been about grandeur. The epic scale of their psychedelic explorations, the life-altering themes of their recordings, the ground-breaking, conceptual stagings, all have helped in the construction of the group's mythology. And more than any other rock band's, Pink Floyd myths have lived on and prospered even as the band and its fan-base have evolved with time.
A live, double-album, PULSE works not only as a great extended postcard of 1994's biggest tour, but as Pink Floyd's myth re-charger. Consider the facts: the release was celebrated with a laser-light show atop the Empire State Building, and the spine of the CD package features a perpetually blinking light. But, as is always the case with Pink Floyd, there is reason to their madness. The blinking light harkens back to the heartbeat that is the unifying theme of their classic DARK SIDE OF THE MOON album, which is performed in its entirety on disc two.
Disc one is an approximation of the band's first set, featuring a powerful run through Syd Barrett's "Astronomy Domine" (the definition of late '60s British psychedelia), as well as a host of songs from 1987's MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON and '94's DIVISION BELL. But the second set is the true keeper of the two. Having made its tour debut on the 25th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing (how's that for a myth?), DARK SIDE loses none of its glow when transferred to a live setting. David Gilmour ably handles Roger Waters' vocal parts, but escapes comparisons by throwing the focus on instrumental interludes that further the imagination--"On The Run," for instance, sounds like a true precursor to The Orb's ambient noodlings. Still, the radio hits ("Money," "Us And Them," "Brain Damage") are all re-interpreted enough to sound novel, but familiar enough to feel like ours. In this way, Pink Floyd are our own Homer, our own Jason & The Argonauts: their stories have been with us forever, but we never mind hearing them again.

In releasing this two-CD live album of Pink Floyd's elaborate production, both the Roger Waters and David Gilmour-led camps almost atone for the bitter back-biting fans have endured throughout the '80s and '90s. Everybody's favorite Alaskan pop dame apparently spent the time between 2001's THIS WAY and 0304 distancing herself from her roots and closely studying the Britney-style teenpop phenomenon. Gone is the earnest, coffehouse folkie feel, replaced by squadrons of percolating synthesizers and snappy loops. Together with new writing partner/co-producer Lester Mendez, she seems to have worked out a way to mate Max Martin-style pop hooks with her own sometimes-introspective, sometimes-philosophical lyrics.
There are plenty of songs that deal strictly with the vagaries of romance, but there's also "America," where Jewel gets overtly political, and "Stand," where she laments the failure of Woody Guthrie's visions in contemporary society. So while a casual listen might give the impression that yesterday's Jewel had become strictly a memory, there's a continuing lyrical thread on 0304 that extends like a dangling lifeline to the singer's old fans.
