Wonderful And Frightening World Of The Fall, The
The Fall: Mark E. Smith (vocals); Brix Smith (guitar, vocals); Craig Scanlon (guitar); Stephen Hanley (bass, acoustic guitar); Karl Burns (drums, percussion, bass); Paul Hanley(drums, keyboards). Additional personnel: Gavin Friday (vocals). The eighth Fall album consolidated the abrasive sextet's relationship with producer John Leckie, who helped expand their musical palate without sacrificing individuality. The presence of guitarist Laura Elise, better known as Brix Smith, expanded the unit's tonal capabilities, but they remain firmly a vehicle in which singer Mark E. Smith vented his spleen. His vitriolic lyrics were as uncompromising as ever, even if now-accustomed dissonance is occasionally paired with neo-psychedelic nuances. The Frightening World captures the Fall as they expanded their frame of reference, and in the process, gained recognition for their highly original music. SKU: 4111612

Away From The Sun (UK Version)
Contains an untitled hidden track following "Sarah Yellin'." 3 Doors Down: Brad Arnold (vocals); Matt Roberts, Chris Henderson (guitar); Todd Harrell (bass). Additional personnel includes: Josh Freese (drums). Recorded at London Bridge, Seattle, Washington; Greenhouse, Burnaby, Canada and Ocean Way Studios,Hollywood, California. "When I'm Gone" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. After almost two years of constant touring, 3 Doors Down return as stronger songwriters and equally passionate musicians with AWAY FROM THE SUN. Instantly catchy, singable choruses, as with "When I'm Gone" are emblematic of what thrust their debut album (A BETTER LIFE) into the hearts and minds of rock fans. Hints of a Creed influence peek through on the title track, while an early Pearl Jam vibe permeates "Running Out Of Days." Fans are sure to hold their lighters high overhead for ballads such as "Here Without You." Looking into the credits, Producer Rich Parashar returns to the helm for AWAY WITH THE SUN, with in-demand session drummer Josh Freese pounding out solid grooves. SKU: 1080935

Beacon Street Collection, The
No Doubt: Gwen Stefani (vocals); Tom Dumont (guitar); Eric Stefani (keyboards); Tony Kanal (bass); Adrian Young (drums). Additional personnel: Bradley (vocals); Eric Carpenter, Gerard Boisse (saxophone); Phil Jordan (trumpet); Gabe McNair (trombone). Engineers: Colin Mitchell, Ray Blair, Tom Dumont. Includes liner notes by No Doubt. THE BEACON STREET COLLECTION is No Doubt's sophomore release. Its ten tracksare the perfect prologue to their breakthrough album TRAGIC KINGDOM. On this album, No Doubt's sound is an amalgam of rock, hard-core and their own quirky spin on ska. One of the virtues of Gwen Stefani's guttural voice is the fact that it works well with any style No Doubt decides to use. A little more rocking than TRAGIC KINGDOM, THE BEACON STREET COLLECTION features a tasteful horn section and playful melodies that become instant sing-along hooks. No Doubt is now a household name. This reissue offers the opportunity to find out what made people want to bounce around to No Doubt's music before Stefani's bejeweled forehead became the totem of the skateboard generation. Kid A
Includes a 28-page book with an additional 12-page booklet inside. KID A won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. It was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award in the categories of Album Of The Year and Best Engineered Album. 1997's OK COMPUTER turned the rock world on its ear by bringing visionary neo-prog rock touches to a Britpop format. Consequently, KID A was one of the most anticipated releases of its era, especially since Nigel Godrich, the man behind the mixing desk for the previous album, was again on hand for this outing. On KID A, Thom Yorke's passionate wailing is put through the aural wringer, and the band's previous nimbly orchestrated full-frontal sonic assault is replaced by full-frontal electric piano, to iconoclastic effect. The ambient underpinnings and garbled vocals of "Everything in Its Right Place," and the instrumental "Treefingers," the electronic beats of "Idioteque," and Yorke's processed voice on the title track will come as quite a shock to diehard '70s rockers who spent the late '90s deifying Radiohead as heirs to the Pink Floyd throne. But these touches work brilliantly, while the more organic elements, such as the jazzy horn section on "The National Anthem," and the comparatively conservative arrangement (though there's some unsettlingly atonal orchestration lurking here, too) of "How to Disappear Completely" provide a counterpoint to all this incipient modernism. Bell Is A Cup Until It Is Struck, A
Wire: Colin Newman (vocals, guitar); Graham Lewis (vocals, bass); Bruce Gilbert (guitar); Robert Gotobed (drums). After THE IDEAL COPY ushered in the '80s resurrection of Wire, how did the enigmatic quartet follow through? Only by releasing its most accessible, listener-friendly, and engaging record yet. The album's title reflects the stream-of-consciousness thinking and abstract notions that set this Lou Giordano, John Siket.delightful art-pop offering off from most of Wire'sother records and a great deal of what was going on in rock & roll during the twilight of the '80s. Taking guitars, basses, keyboards, and drums, and processing them through all manners of electronic cuisinarts, Mssrs. Newman, Lewis, Gilbert, and Gotobed concoct a series of songs glistening with fragile melodies, hypnotizing rhythms, and lyrical puzzleboxes. From the chunky grunge of "The Finest Drops," to the labyrinthine constructs of "Boiling Boy," and the shimmering atmospherics of "Follow the Locust," it's easy to lose oneself in this collection's multi-hued textures. An underrated work worthy of closer attention. SKU: 1083684

Box Of Birds, A
The Church: Steven Kilbey, Peter Koppes, Tim Powles, Marty Wilson-Piper. Recorded at Blue Room Studios, Gavle, Sweden and Karmic Hit Studios, Sydney, Australia. BOX OF BIRDS, the Church's twelfth album, is a collection of covers. The Church puts its all into these tracks, originated by the likes of Alex Harvey, the Monkees, Iggy Pop, Hawkwind, and others, and, though remaining fairly faithful to the originals, it manages to infuse each one with its own particular touch. Standouts include: George Harrison's "It's All Too Much" (also including lyrical nods to a couple of other songs), which gets a vital, uptempo run-through, complete with peals of feedback; a wonderful reading of Ultravox's "Hiroshima Mon Amour," that simultaneously recalls the glory days of Euro-pop and New Wave, while retaining the Church's own psychedelic leanings; Television's "Friction," which provides Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes with an excellent opportunity to pit their twin guitar interplay against that of one of their primary influences; and an epic and reverential take on Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer," a song that the band has long performed live. More than just an entertaining peek at the Church's influences, BOX OF BIRDS ismore than worthy of the band's vast catalogue. SKU: 4132423

Night On The Town, A [Remastered]
Personnel: Rod Stewart (vocals); Steve Cropper, W. Peek, J. Davis, David Lindley, Fred Tackett, Joe Walsh (guitar); J. Jumonville, Plas Johnson (tenor saxophone); Tower Of Power Horns (horns); J. Jarvis, David Foster, Barry. Beckett, J. Smith (keyboards); Donald "Duck" Dunn, Robert Glaub, D. Hood, Willie Weeks, Lee Sklar (bass); RogerHawkins, R. Schlosser, Andy Newmark, Al Jackson (drums); T. Vig, J. Lala (percussion); J. Horowitz, M. Lewis, Arif Mardin (string arrangements). Recorded at Cherokee Recording Studios, Hollywood, California and Muscle Shoals Sound, Alabama. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Coming on the heels of his departure from The Faces, A NIGHT ON THE TOWN was Rod Stewart's first solo album. With his usual collaborator Ron Wood now a member of the Rolling Stones, Stewart gathered together an impressive group of backing musicians that included Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and Al Jackson of Booker T & The MG's, Joe Walsh, the Tower Of Power horn section and multi-instrumentalist David Lindley. Dividing the album up into fast and slow sides, Stewart chose an interesting batch of songs, included some notable self-penned compositions. These include the tragic "The Killing Of Georgie (Part I And II)," about the murder of a gay friend, and the ultra-sexy ballad "Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright)." Along with a delicate rendering of Cat Stevens' "The First Cut Is The Deepest," these songs provided a perfect springboard for the more sprightly fast side. "The Balltrap" is a clever Stewart composition about a sinister femme fatale. "The Wild Side Of Life" and Gib Gilbeau's "Big Bayou" make for a perfect marriage of Chuck Berry stomp and country twang. Essential Ramblin' Jack Elliot, The
Solo performer: Ramblin' Jack Elliott (vocals, acoustic guitar). Tracks 13-23 were recorded live at Town Hall, New York, New York on April 30, 1965. Ramblin' Jack is a key figure in the development of American folk music, a link between Woody Guthrie and Guthrie disciple Bob Dylan. Like Dylan, Ramblin' Jack was a young Jewish folksinger in love with the idea of the dust bowl balladeer, changing his name (from Adnopoz to Elliott) and adopting a Guthrie-esque persona. He went a step further than the younger Dylan by traveling around with Guthrie. Unlike Dylan, Elliott always stuck close to the traditional folk style, as heard on this definitive, lengthy (originally a double album) collection. With a weathered, earthy voice and considerablefingerpicking skills, he tackles a program of traditional folk and blues, providing a template that would be expanded by Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, and others. The second half of the disc, taken from a 1965 concert before an appreciative folk revival-happy audience, comes full circle by including a version of Dylan's "Dont Think Twice, It's All Right," which sounds perfectly at home amid the traditional material. Whoa Nelly (UK Edition) [ECD]
Personnel includes: Nelly Furtado (vocals); Field (guitar); Camara Kambon (piano); Mike Elizondo (bass); Russ Miller (drums); Luis Orbegoso (congas, toms) Victor Rebelo (percussion); Daniel Stone (triangle). "I'm Like A Bird" won the 2002 Grammy Awardfor Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. On WHOA NELLY, young songstress Nelly Furtado defies expectations by mixing and matching styles and approaches. The overriding production aesthetic includes R&B/hip-hop loops, beats, and samples mated with pure pop touches and some quirky electronic swoops and lurches. Furtado's songs combine hip-hop attitude with occasional Latin rhythmic accents, but the most striking aspect of this recording is the lyrics. While it wouldn't be difficult to imagine these arrangements being completely effective framing generic pop sentiments, Furtado places no constrictions on her lyrical muse, using unusual imagery, odd syntax, and inventive scenarios that immediately set her apart from the Top 40 crowd. References to a "Mobius strip," "proper grammar," and the "North American dream" are the rule rather than the exception in Furtado's pleasingly left-field style. Her vocals and the production are so seamless that if you're not paying attention, the unusual lyrics might slip right by. If that happens, Furtado will have made some real headway in subverting the pop mainstream. SKU: 1059678

Otis Blue (Otis Redding Sings Soul)
Personnel: Otis Redding (vocals); Steve Cropper (guitar); Andrew Love (tenor saxophone); Floyd Newman (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson, Gene "Bowlegs" Miller (trumpet); Isaac Hayes, Booker T. Jones (keyboards); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson Jr. (drums); Earl Sims (background vocals). Recorded at Stax Recording Studios, Memphis, Tennessee in July of 1965 except track 5 recorded in April of 1965. Originally released on Volt (412). Includes original release liner notes by Bob Rolontz. Many people's choice as their favorite Otis Redding album, much of OTIS BLUE finds the quintessential soul singer in atypically sensitive mode. Up until its release he'd been regarded as something of an R&B shouter in the Wilson Pickett mould, and he doesn't disappoint fans of this earlier incarnation with typically energetic versions of "Respect,""Shake" and "Satisfaction." But it's the album opener, "Ole Man Trouble" that's a sign of Redding's emerging more mature, reflective side that was to culminate in the posthumous "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay," while the heartbreaking "I've Been Loving You Too Long" remains one of his, and perhaps soul music's, greatest performances. He is, of course, accompanied throughout by the classic MG's lineup which, as always, is the perfect foil for his distinctive style. OTIS BLUE finds Otis Redding and '60s soul at their respective artistic peaks. SKU: 3102312

Superunknown
Soundgarden: Chris Cornell (vocals, guitar); Ben Shepherd (guitar, bass, drums, percussion, background vocals); Kim Thayil (guitar); Matt Cameron (drums, percussion, Mellotron). Additional personnel: April Acevez (viola); Justine Foy (cello); Michael Beinhorn (piano); Natasha Shneider (Clavinet); Gregg Keplinger (drums, percussion); Artis The Spoonman (spoons). Recorded at Bad Animals Studio, Seattle, Washington. "Black Hole Sun" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance, and "Spoonman" won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance. "Black Hole Sun" was also nominated for Best Rock Song, and SUPERUNKNOWN was nominated for Best Rock Album. As the first grunge band to be signed by a major label, Seattle's Soundgarden opened the pop floodgates, and a deluge of thrash-o-rama bands began swamping the airwaves. Following a series of trend-setting releases on the independent Sub Pop and SST labels, Soundgarden's initial A&M releases LOUDER THAN LOVE and BADMOTORFINGER signaled the return of the classic guitar band to popular consciousness. Using the time-honored Led Zeppelin/Aerosmith approach as a jump-off point--not to mention influential bands like Black Sabbath, MC5, The Stooges and Killing Joke--Soundgarden hasformalized their own approach to raw power. Their stylized melodic hooks, however, along with their sometimes surreal lyrics, set them apart from the pack. Whether they get dazed and confused on the vamping "Limo Wreck," or cut loose with a wham- bam-thank-you-ma'am 4/4 cruncher like "Kickstand," Soundgarden can rock and roll with all the jet-propelled, no-nonsense crunch of all your favorite bands, from Zeppelin to the Ramones--and lead guitarist Kim Thayil's chops never outrace his melodic imagination. But Soundgarden is doing a lot more than simply recycling their best bits for another run up the charts. With SUPERUNKNOWN, they're stretching out and putting some distance between themselves and their imitators, incorporating different styles into their own mix, and creating a fresh modern sound. Certainly, there are not many bands who could rock convincingly in 5/4 time without sounding like slumming jazzbos, but Soundgarden's "My Wave" is a fist-shaking anthem that suggests the tone of the Stones' "Get Off My Cloud." The curious mixture of psychedelic blues elements, Near-Eastern tonalities and Indian ragas which make "Head Down," "Black Hole Sun" and "Half" so distinctive indicates that Soundgarden didn't simply cop their ideas from a Hollywood soundtrack. With his guttural Steve Tyler-like growl, frontman/songwriter Chris Cornell can turn a spoon player into a street shaman on "Spoonman," give in to despair on "Let Me Drown," or rail against authoritarian types on "Head Down." With slamming production by Michael Beinhorn, SUPERUNKNOWN is the hard rock event of 1994. SKU: 5048405

Columbia Recordings, The
Contains 48 tracks, including 5 previously unreleased songs. Personnel includes:Doris Day, Dinah Shore, Buddy Clark, Frankie Laine, Gene Nelson (vocals); Paul Weston & His Orchestra, Les Brown & His Orchestra, Harry James & His Orchestra, Percy Faith & His Orchestra, The Warner Bros. Studio Orchestra, The MGM Studio Chorus & Orchestra, The Mellomen, The Norman Luboff Choir. The Page Cavanaugh Trio: Page Cavanaugh (piano); Robert Morgan (guitar); Charles Parnell (bass). The Buddy Cole Quartet: Edwin Cole (piano); Vincent Terri (guitar); Phil Stephens (bass); Alvin Stoller (drums). Compilation producer: Didier C. Deutsch. Recorded between 1944 & 1966. Includes liner notes by Andrew Velez. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Dawn Frank (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). This two-CD set covers 22 years of Doris Day's work. It reveals a picture of a wide-ranging talent. Throughout the decades Doris Day has bestowed an unfaltering sensitivity on her recordings as she applied this talent to the wide range of material. One thinks of the sweet, nice girl she was typically cast as in film musicals and comedies of the '50s and '60s, but her singing provides a portrait of greater depth than her film work. From the outset of her career her vocals cast spells on the listener, as in "Sentimental Journey," where she amplifies the tune with dead-on definition. On light, fluffy novelties like "Pillow Talk" she belts out the material with cheer, while "Tacos, Enchiladas and Beans" is a perfect humorous synthesis of power and coyness. SKU: 1000560

Combo Concert
Personnel: Roy Orbison (vocals); Billy Sanford, John Rainey Adkins (guitar); Barry Boothe (piano); William Dees (keyboards, background vocals); Billy Gilmore (bass); Paul Garrison (drums). Recorded at the Olympia Theatre in Paris, France on March 23, 1965 and Laren,Holland on March 25, 1965. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Since the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Roy Orbison is usually the epic orchestral sweep of melodramatic bolero-style hits like "Running Scared" and "It's Over," it can be hard to remember sometimes that Orbison was at heart a rock & roller. This excellent archival release of live sets recorded in Paris and Amsterdam in March, 1965, proves this aspect of Orbison's musical personality once and for all. Backed by a tight beat-group-style combo led by guitarist Bill Dees, who co-wrote a number of Orbison's biggest hits, Orbison sings and plays with graceful nonchalance. Even ballads like "Crying" are delivered with the humor and rock and roll passion of "Oh, Pretty Woman" or "Mean Woman Blues." Excellent stuff, of interest to any halfway-serious Orbison fan. Body Talk [Remastered]
Personnel includes: George Benson, Earl Klugh (guitar); Frank Foster (tenor saxophone); Jon Faddis, John Gatchell, Waymon Reed (trumpet, flugelhorn); Gerald Chamberlain, Dick Griffin (trombone); Harold Mabern (electric piano); Ron Carter, Gary King (bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Mobutu (percussion). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Didier C. Deutsch. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey in July 1973. Originally released on CTI Records. Includes liner notes by Didier C. Deutsch. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Benson stretches out extensively on this recording, cut in a couple of days in 1973. He also wrote four of the five tunes, though often his composing here consists of laying down enough of a riff to establish a groove and then letting a handful of horn hits complete the job. "Top of the World," "Dance," and the title cut follow this pattern; "Plum" makes more of melody statement, cooking in a smoky,mid-tempo vein before jumping into double time, with Benson getting busy over a two-chord vamp. The six horns, arranged by James Brown vet Alfred (Pee Wee) Ellis, include musicians like Frank Foster and Jon Faddis, and succeed in sounding hot and funky rather than cheesy and contrived. While the liner notes emphasize the presence of Earl Klugh in Benson's band at this time (Benson had recently met and hired the 19-year old), his presence on BODY TALK is minimal; he can be heard playing recurring R&B figures in the background on "Dance," and takes a 16-bar solo on "When Love Has Grown," the album's one cover, after harmonizing on the melody with his boss. Skyscraper
Personnel: David Lee Roth (vocals); Steve Vai (acoustic & electric guitars); Brett Tuggle (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Billy Sheehan (electric & fretless basses, background vocals); Gregg Bissonette (drums, percussion, background vocals); Richie Raposa (programming); Magic Moreno, Gary Falcone, Joe Pizzulo, Tom Kelly, Tom Funderburk (background vocals). For his second full-length solo album, 1988's SKYSCRAPER, David Lee Roth decided to experiment with his expected heavy-rock style. Synthesizers played more of a prominent role than theyhad in the raging hard rock of EAT 'EM AND SMILE, and Billy Sheehan's bass heroics were toned down a few notches (resulting in his exit from the band just after the record's release). Guitarist Steve Vai co-produced the album with Roth, providing another key factor in the music's new direction. Vai, previously a member of Frank Zappa's band, gave SKYSCRAPER a quirky edge. On SKYSCRAPER, Roth stresses songwriting over instrumental virtuosity this time around-with often-grand results. The epic, sonically rich title track was comparable to little else at the time (or, for that matter, anything else since), while the single "Just Like Paradise" was the top-ten hit that pushed SKYSCRAPER to platinum status. Other highlights include the new wave dance sounds of "Stand Up," the gorgeous pop rocker "Hina" (which deserved to be a single), the nostalgic acoustic ballad "Damn Good," and the rockers "Knucklebones," "The Bottom Line," and "Hot Dog and a Shake." Unfortunately, SKYSCRAPER and the subsequent tour marked the last collaborations between Vai and Roth. SKU: 5046433
