Grammy Nominees 2003
Though music critics and aficionados love to pooh-pooh mass-marketed records, endlessly complaining about the lack of variety offered by major labels and commercial radio conglomerates, one listen to GRAMMY NOMINEES 2003 reveals a greater breadth and depth in the big time than most observers would care to admit. This fact is made strikingly clear by the first three tracks here; the album opens with songs by two piano-playing chanteuses (Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" and Norah Jones jazzy surprise hit "Don't Know Why") before jarring the listenerwith the neo-grunge of "How You Remind Me" by Nickelback. Other tracks range from the straight dance pop of Britney Spears and jam-band rock of Dave Matthews to the Dixie Chicks' bluegrass take on Fleetwood Mac and the smooth-as-single-malt plaint of sensitive urban folkie John Mayer. In the end, GRAMMY NOMINEES 2003 is far from a pointless exercise in marketing, but rather an excellent collection of 2002's best hit songs. SKU: 1082530

Labour Of Love Vol.1
UB40: Ali Campbell, Robin Campbell (vocals, guitar); Astro, Norman Hassan (vocals, percussion); Brian Travers (saxophone); Michael Virtue (keyboards); Earl Falconer (bass); James Brown (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Josh Fifer (trumpet); Jackie Mittoo (keyboards); RubyTurner, Jackie Graham, Mo Birch (background vocals). This is UB40's "tribute" album with cover versions of their favorite songs from 1969 through 1972. Playing reggae and supporting the UK Labour Party during a decade of Thatcherism and racism demonstrated that these chaps had morals and guts. They eventually prospered (good ultimately conquers bad) and they can now look back and taste their achievement. In the UK, UB40 have done as much to popularize reggae as Bob Marley did for the rest of the world. This is their most refined album and contains some of their major hits. They make a point in the sleeve-notes of informing the listener that all these songs had been recorded by Jamaican artists. No apology is needed - their 'Cherry Oh Baby' and 'Red Red Wine' have become classics for this band. Much respect, irie. SKU: 1002257

Hypnotised [Remastered]
The Undertones: Feargal Sharkey (vocals); Damian O'Neill, John O'Neill (guitar); Michael Bradley (bass); Billy Doherty (drums). Recorded at Wisseloord Studios, Hilversum, Holland and Eden Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Paul Lester. Despite initial appearances--a blurry sleeve shot of two band members enjoying a seafood supper--1980's HYPNOTISED marked the Undertones' commercial apogee. It announced itself with an opening salvo called "More Songs About Chocolate And Girls," both a cheeky nod to Talking Heads' own second album and a mission statement of sorts. To the relief of fans, the band's concerns hadn't changed since their debut LP and accompanying flurry of spunky, guitar-driven pop 45s. If the comedic teen angst anthem "MyPerfect Cousin" marked a logical edge towards center in the pop arena that welcomed them, then its follow-up "Wednesday Week" was a more intricate effort. The album's "Girls That Don't Talk" and "Tearproof" further displayed the Undertones' emergent '60s bubblegum and garage influences beside the closer to home punked-up glitter pop stomp of "Hard Luck." It may have lacked the concise, blistering perfection of "Teenage Kicks," and John O'Neill's songwriting hadn't yet developed into the complex and occasionally dazzling clutch of songs that made up POSITIVE TOUCH, but HYPNOTISED, as knowing as it sometimes appeared nanve, was truly the Undertones' moment. Low Down Blues
LOW DOWN BLUES is a collection of Hank Williams songs inspired by the blues and other forms of black music. Personnel includes: Hank Williams (vocals, guitar). Recorded between 1946 and 1952. Includes liner notes by Robert Palmer. Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (PolyGram Studios). As Robert Palmer makes clear in this album's excellent liner notes, Hank Williams never sang the blues, per se, but there's no doubt that he had them. Thus, LOW DOWN BLUES is an interestingly programmed after-the-fact concept album of Williams' songs and performances in which the blue feeling is ever present, even if structurally the songs are closer to Tin Pan Alley pop than to Robert Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail." Unsurprisingly, some of the most interesting things here are lesser-known demos, with just Williams on acoustic guitar and vocals. A great version of "Honky Tonk Blues," for example, is so intense that it practically leaps out of thespeakers. SKU: 1019059

Live From New York City
Simon & Garfunkel: Paul Simon (vocals, acoustic guitar); Art Garfunkel (vocals). Producers: Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Roy Halee, Bob Irwin. Recorded at Philharmonic Hall, Lincoln Center, New York, New York on January 22, 1967. Includes liner notes by Anthony DeCurtis. All tracks havebeen digitally remastered. Though this live recording captures a high-profile Simon & Garfunkel concert on the band's home turf at what was arguably the height of their celebrity, it was not made available to the public until 35 years later. Decades down the road, it provides us with a snapshot of an important moment in American cultural history. Flower power was in full bloom, as was the "folk boom," the first flush of the singer-songwriter movement, and these two unassuming lads from Queens were at the vanguard. As they sing without a backing band, using only Paul Simon's skilled acoustic guitar work for accompaniment, the angelic purity of their voices nicely contrasts the world-wise, highly sophisticated lyrics of Simon's compositions. While there are a couple of non-LP tunes tackled here ("You Don't Know Where Your Interest Lies," "A Church is Burning"), the real revelation comes with some of the more familiar songs. We're used to hearing such hits as "A Hazy Shade of Winter" and "I Am a Rock" all dolled up in full-band folk-rock regalia, but these acoustic versions show that the rhythmic inventions Simon utilized to make up for the lack of a band were ahead of their time, prefiguring the style subsequent folkies would employ years down the road. As attended to by Abe Velez, the whole package comes together nicely, with effective graphics and informative, Anthony DeCurtis-penned notes completing a highly evocative experience. SKU: 1073686

Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy, The
Personnel: Chick Corea (acoustic & electric pianos, organ, harpsichord, gong); Bill Connors (acoustic & electric guitars); Stanley Clarke (electric bass, bell tree); Lenny White (drums, bongos, congas, percussion). Recorded in August 1973. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio. HYMN OF THE 7TH GALAXY, its hyper speed momentum aside, shares many of the characteristics of prog rock: flashy playing, incredibly complex instrumental passages and arrangements, awry and tangled time signatures, and a propensity towards raw energy intermingled with electronics. Everyone here plays as if there were no tomorrow. Chick Corea's superchargedelectric piano and organ licks alternate between fire-breathing tone clusters and atmospheric grace. Guitarist Bill Connors plays like a comet circling a supernova; Stanley Clarke's earthquake-inducing bass lines are both monstrous and finger-poppin' funky, while drummer Lenny White simply beats his kit to jelly. Feel the power: the protoplasmic funk of "After the Cosmic Rain," the Fender Rhodes symphonies and ecstatic drumming of "Captain Senor Mouse," the far-out space-bop of the title track. Super hot stuff from one of jazz-rock's cornerstones. SKU: 1002443

Hypermodern Jazz 2000.5
Recorded in Berlin, California in January 1996. All of Alec Empire's stylistic transmutations have been intriguing, but few rival the jazz-prophet stance he strikes on 1996's HYPERMODERN JAZZ 2000.5 for pure perplexing effect. His design for tomorrow's music reroutes Sun Ra's Afro-Atlantean visions through the Berlin-bred circuitry of Empire's warped techno playground. HYPERMODERN is exceedingly odd, rife with trippy keyboard noises, synth blips, freeform polyphony, and the sort of puzzle-box configurations of in-the-pocket and erratic percussion embodied by the opening "Walk the Apocalypse." The album is made even stranger by the spillover of Empire's various identities into its cluttered grooves. Fusion-damaged numbers like "God Told Me How to Kiss," "I'm Gonna Die If I Fall Asleep Again," and "My Funk Is Useless" are spattered with electro-buzzes and splashes of acid. A fetchingly downtempo mix of murky funk and stark, skeletal hip-hop--heavy on the bass and easy on the ears--informs "Get Some," "Many Bars and No Money," and "Chilling Through the Lives." Most bizarrely of all, "The Unknown Stepdancer" offers an unaccompanied tap(!) interpretation of digital hardcore's boggling breakbeats. Like the drowsy "Slowly Falling in Love" and the smeary, Expressionist film-organ solo that closes the album, HYPERMODERN is lighthearted and appealing but, well, really and truly weird. SKU: 1058315

Zen Kiss, The
Personnel: Sheila Chandra, Steve Coe (vocals, various instruments). Recorded at the Coachhouse, Clifton, Bristol, England in October 1993. All songs written by Steve Coe and Sheila Chandra except "En Mireal Del Penal" (Arroyo/Benito). Includes liner notes by Sheila Chandra. Sheila Chandra makes further forays into world musical styles on ZEN KISS, maintaining only a tenuous attachment to the Indian roots that brought her to prominence in the 1980s. The acapella opener, "La Sagesse," finds her delving into the gospel traditions of the American South, while she turns to British folk on "Love It Is a Killing Thing." On "Abbess Hildegard," Chandra pays homage to medieval feminist icon Hildegard von Bingen ina rite that has been explored more fully by the Iranian-born, Indian-raised vocalist Azam Ali on PORTALS OF GRACE and other works. Jazz From Hell
Personnel: Frank Zappa (guitar, Synclavier); Steve Vai, Ray White (guitar); Tommy Mars, Bobby Martin (keyboards); Scott Thunes (bass); Chad Wackerman (drums); Ed Mann (percussion). Recorded at UMRK, Hollywood, California. The title says it all; Zappa truly can make JAZZ FROM HELL. With his trusty Synclavier synthesizer under his arm and his imagination running wild in the digital domain, FZ has dreamed up some of the most unusual instrumentals of his career. From snaking melodies over a disco beat on the opening "Night School" to the furious storm of rhythms on "G-Spot Tornado," these compositions exist to be played only by a computer under the command of one of the most inventive composers of the modern era. Zappa makes the normally cold digital tone of the synthesized sounds dance and jump like living things on unique tracks like "The Beltway Bandits," the manic voices of "Massagio Galore" and the swirling title track. Of course, the human element prevails on the contrasting "St. Etienne" where Zappa's classic early '80s band--Steve Vai, Ray White, Tommy Mars, Bobby Martin, Chad Wackerman, et al--join their guitar wielding leader for a round of creative musical madness. This is a must for fans of Zappa's compositional genius. SKU: 3102098

Monk's Greatest Hits
Also available in a 3-pack with MILES DAVIS' GREATEST HITS and DAVE BRUBECK'S GREATEST HITS. Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Steve Lacy (soprano saxophone); Phil Woods (alto saxophone, clarinet); Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone); Gene Allen (baritone saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet); Nick Travis (trumpet); Thad Jones (cornet); Eddie Bert (trombone); Pee Wee Russell (clarinet); Larry Gales, Butch Warren, John Ore (bass); Ben Riley, Frank Dunlop (drums). Producer: Teo Macero. Reissue producer: Nedra Olds-Neal. Recorded between March 29, 1963 and November 19, 1968. Includes liner notes by Michael Zwerin. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz (Sony Music Studios, NewYork, New York). As with any prolific jazz artist, no one album from Thelonious Monk's career could provide a definitive introduction to his music. And unlike Miles Davis or John Coltrane, Monk's development did not take place in epochal leaps defined by this or that particular LP. Rather, Monk's art unfolded through a continued probing of a relatively small collection of compositions. MONK'S GREATEST HITS contains nothing that ever had a prayer of heavy rotation on FM radio, but rather nine of the tunes that Monk spent his career exploring, all of which have become integral to the jazz repertoire. This material was recorded between 1963 and 1967, and on four of the tunes Monk stretches out past the ten-minute mark. Most of the cuts are live recordings featuring Monk's tenor saxophonist of choice in later years, Charlie Rouse. Rouse is present on all but two solo cuts ("Round Midnight" and "Ruby, My Dear"). Harem
Personnel: Sarah Brightman (vocals, keyboards); Adam Klemens, Adrian Partington (conductor); Peter Weihe (guitar, sitar); Jin Burda (mandolin); Lukas Hilbert (sitar); Nigel Kennedy (violin); Amir Abdel Magid (kanoun); Reda Bdir (nay); Michael Soltau (piano, keyboards, programming); Stephan Moccio (piano); Frank Peterson (keyboards, percussion, programming, background vocals); Matthias Meissner (keyboards); Trevor Barry (bass); Frosty Beedle (drums); Kuljid Bhamra (tabla); Rony Barrak (percussion); Christian Draude (programming); The Bach Choir, Jaz Coleman, Violet (background vocals); The Prague Symphony Orchestra, The London Symphony Orchestra. Listening to HAREM, it's hard to believe that multifarious pop diva Sarah Brightman first came to fame as a proponent of musical theater (not counting her early stint with dance-pop group Hot Gossip). After going through a number of stylistic shifts over the years, she has arrived at an unusual point where her sound evokes a strange confluence of Charlotte Church, Enya, and Madonna. Given the "Arabian Nights" sub-theme of the album, you might even throw in a little "Desert Rose"-era Sting as well. HAREM veers between ethereal, almost New Age-like moments, operatic flurries, percolating dance beats, and some accessible Eastern-flavored exoticism. Through it all, Brightman's Broadway past occasionally pops up, as on her orchestra-accompanied version of the standard "Stranger in Paradise," which is itself based on a classical theme. In fact, the orchestra pops up throughout the album, playing arrangements by former Killing Joke member Jaz Coleman, who's surely ventured as far afield from hisorigins by this point as Ms. Brightman. Right On My Way Home
Personnel: Bob Dorough (vocals, piano); Joe Lovano (soprano & tenor saxophones); Bill Takas, Christian McBride (bass); Grady Tate, Billy Hart (drums). Recorded at Red Rock Recordings, Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania and Avatar Studio, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Mitchell Feldman. Taking the road less traveled is what veteran singer/pianist Bob Dorough is all about. Each song he presents is a stop along the way that he describes for us in his unique and charming style. Making a beyond-overdue major label bow as a septuagenarian, he includes songs that detail the passions of his life. He describes his love for bebop in "Up Jumped Bird." He displays his formidable compositional skills in the romantic "What Ever Happened to Love Songs," his playfulness in "Right On My Way Home," and his inimitable ballad style on "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most." With theaccompaniment of longtime bassist Bill Takas and drummer Grady Tate on some cuts, and an all-star band including Joe Lovano, Christian McBride and Billy Hart on others, this is a welcome release from a great storyteller. Complete Guitarist, The
This CD is a reissue of the original release with bonus tracks from DANCE FOR TWO PEOPLE (KM-161) and BLUES GUITAR WORKSHOP (KM-141). Personnel: Davey Graham (vocals, guitar). Recorded at Livingston Studio, London, England in 1977. Originally released on Kicking Mule Records (KM-138). Includes liner notes by Duck Baker. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1999, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). For most performers, titling an album THE COMPLETE GUITARIST would be an act of inexcusable hubris. For the British folk-blues master Davey Graham, however, it makes perfect sense. The first star of the '60s British folk scene, the Scottish-Guyanese Graham directly influenced such vocal acolytes as Paul Simon, John Renbourn, and Bert Jansch, all of whom have recorded versions of Graham's signature composition, "Angi." Graham's wide-ranging tastes could never be limited to one style of music. His later work, such as this classic 1978 album, leavens Graham's folk-blues roots with surefooted explorations of a variety of ethnic musics. The album's fertile cross-pollinations include the Scandinavian/Scottish "Road to Lisdoonvana (Jig and Reel)." In the '80s and '90s,such musical inter-breeding would be common, but this classic album is a trailblazing example of the form. The CD contains eight bonus tracks from the contemporaneous releases DANCE FOR TWO PEOPLE and BLUES GUITAR WORKSHOP. SKU: 4121580

Greens From The Garden
Personnel includes: Corey Harris (vocals, acoustic, electric, National resaphonic & electric lap steel guitars, whistle); JamalMilner (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Victor Brown (bass); Harry Dennis-Djun (djun, percussion); Billy Bragg (background vocals). Principally recorded at Paragon Studios, Charlottesville, Virginia. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. With Harris's third recording he leaves his traditional take on delta blues behind for good, embracing a wealth of styles, all with equal aplomb. Purists might balk at Harris's abandonment of the style into which he breathed so much new life, but GREENS FROM THE GARDEN makes it clear that Harris's vision is too grand to be contained by one admittedly limiting style. He incorporates a full electric band on several cuts, but this is no Stevie Ray Vaughan-style rocking-up of the blues. Harris keeps the arrangements concise and the performances cutting. On "Honeysuckle," Harris's guitar is accompanied by the striking combination of barrelhouse piano and djembe. "Congo Square Rag" is a welcome reprise of the guitar-trombone-tuba setup of his previous album. Harris relies on his own compositions here, resulting in a stylistic tour de force that includes Cajun music ("Pas Parlez"), New Orleans second-line rhythms ("Eh La Bas") and a healthy portion of funk. Particularly arresting are a Jamaican rocksteady take on the spiritual "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and a bare-bones "Teabag Blues," recorded at the sessions for Billy Bragg and Wilco's MERMAID AVENUE album, and featuring Bragg on backing vocals. Woodface
This is Crowded House's first LP with Tim Finn. Crowded House: Tim Finn (vocals, guitar); Neil Finn (vocals); Nick Seymour (bass); Paul Hester (drums). "Beauty" is not a word often used to describe pop music. But in the case of Neil Finn and the Australian-based trio Crowded House, it is more than appropriate. On WOODFACE, the group is joined by Finn's brother, Split Enz-meister Tim Finn, for an album that's filled with intelligence, grace, and humor, notto mention absolutely breathtaking vocal harmonies. There is a depth and texture to the songwriting and performance in the songs of Crowded House, which is just not found in most popular music. The CD opens with "Chocolate Cake," a track that categorized Americans as fat and greedy and didn't exactly earn the band a top spot on U.S. airplay lists. The disc moves to the stunning "Its Only Natural" and "Fall at Your Feet." Just listen to "Weather With You" to find out how perfect pop music can be--it's a track that manages the difficult task of never devolving into sentimentality or inanity. The stirring surrender of "Four Seasons in One Day" further demonstrates Neil Finn's ability to transform his deepest, most disturbed emotions into great songs. SKU: 1000967

On The Blues Side
Personnel includes: Chuck Berry (vocals, guitar, steel guitar); Bo Diddley, Matt Murphy (guitar); Johnny Johnson (piano); Willie Dixon (bass); Fred Below (drums). Includes liner notes by Tony Watson. ON THE BLUES SIDE contains 21 tracks from the Chess Records vaults, including 2 previously unreleased tracks. Though he's rightly regarded as the father of rock & roll, it should never be forgotten that Chuck Berry's musical vision was largely informed by the blues. His longtime pianist/comrade-at-arms Johnnie Johnson, who had a huge influence of Berry's early compositions, came from a solid blues background. recorded for Chess during the early part of his career. Though "Worried Life Blues" and "Deep Feeling" show that Berry could get down and out with the best of them, he's gottoo much joie de vivre to stay down for long, so most of his blues efforts are full of vitality, like "Blues for Hawaiians" and "Merry Christmas Baby."
