Lyve From Steel Town [ECD]
LYNYRD SKYNYRD LYVE is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program and multimedia computer files. Lynyrd Skynyrd: Rickey Medlocke (vocals, electric, slide & acoustic guitars, dobro); Johnny Van Zant (vocals); Hughie Thomasson (electric, slide & acoustic guitars, background vocals); Gary Rossington (electric, slide & acoustic guitars); Billy Powell (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Owen Hale (drums, percussion); Dale Krantz-Rossington, Carol Chase (background vocals). Engineers include: Jeff Beckett Recorded live at The Coca Cola Star Lake Amphitheater, Burgettstown, Pennsylvania on July 15, 1997. Interviews recorded at Emerald Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. After reforming in the late-'80s with singer Johnny Van Zant filling infor his late brother Ronnie, Lynyrd Skynyrd decided to make the reunion a permanent proposition--and remained a solid concert draw. 1998's LYVE FROM STEEL TOWN showed that the band was still a force to be reckoned with, even though only three original members remained--guitarist Gary Rossington, bassist Leon Wilkeson, and keyboardist Bill Powell. Johnny Van Zant does a splendid job of recreating his brother's tough vocals, as the group crank out solid versions of such past faves as "Saturday Night Special," "That Smell," and "Sweet Home Alabama." Newer compositions such as "We Ain't Much Different" and "Voodoo Lake" are also featured. SKU: 1014891

Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Duke Ellington Song Book
Discs 1 and 2 contain all of the material on the 3-disc DUKE ELLINGTON SONG BOOK collection. Disc 3 features previously unreleased recordings of Ellington and Strayhorn rehearsing with Fitzgerald and the orchestra. Personnel includes: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Dizzy Gillespie, Herb Ellis, Clark Terry, Ben Webster, Harry Carney, Oscar Peterson, Johnny Hodges, Billy Strayhorn, Ray Brown, Paul Gonsalves. Recorded in Hollywood, California and New York, New York in 1956 and 1957. Includes essay by Patricia Willard. This is part of Verve's Master Edition series. Ella Fitzgerald's outstanding songbook series has become an institution unto itself. This 1957 effort is distinguished from Fitzgerald's other songbooks in that it is the only album in which the composer whose work she is singing actively participates. In fact, these recordings are packed with some of the key figuresin 20th century jazz. As if Ella and Duke weren't enough, Ellington's arranger/composer Billy Strayhorn, guest musicians Dizzy Gillespie and Oscar Peterson, and brilliant record producer Norman Granz all have a hand in the proceedings. And what better backing band could one want than Duke's orchestra? The usual suspects--Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney, and Sam Woodyard, among others--contribute fine performances throughout. Duke's spectacular catalogue dazzles, and his sprightly, lush, richly textures songs are transfigured under Fitzgerald's warm-timbred voice and elegant, precise delivery. Included here are classics like "Rockin' in Rhythm," "Caravan," "Satin Doll," "Sophisticated Lady," "Prelude to a Kiss," and "It Don't Mean a Thing...," each tune as familiar as it is delightful to hear in this new context. Beautifully restored and packaged, featuring bonus tracks, liner notes and photographs, this box is recommended to collectors, casual listeners, and any fan of good music. SKU: 1011184

Beaucoup Fish
Underworld: Karl Hyde, Rick Smith, Darren Emerson. Additional personnel: Andrew Flashman,Maru, Petra, Phil Dore, Todd, Reiko (spoken vocals); Trevor Morais (drums). Engineers: Rick Smith, Tom Morrison, Mike Nielsen. Every few years an album comes along that effectively defines a short piece of time. Underworld, the infinitely patient trio from Romford that manages to put out such a period-defining album every couple years does it again with BEAUCOUP FISH. The simple leitmotifs that grow, repeat and build on each other make up the symphony that is every Underworld song. In a return to a more vocal-oriented style, Underworld moves toward a more traditional song structure. The addition of live instruments makes this a more organic-sounding record than most in the electronic dance genre. The bubbling loop that permeates the opener "Cups" finally jumps to the forefront and takes the song in an entirely new direction with a syncopated coda of synth stabs and chopped-up vocal samples. The two-part "Push," with its pseudo-evangelical rant and the late-night-driving "Jumbo" (which brings to mind 10CC) mix vocal samples with a wash of strings and keyboards. The dissonant guitar samples at the beginning of "Shudder/King of Snake" give way to a distorted loop. BEAUCOUP FISH-mature, complex and well worth the three-year wait. SKU: 1006673

"Guantanamera" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. "Gone Till November" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. The Fugees are one of the few hip-hop groups who successfully blend elements of other musical genres with rap. Their multi-platinum album THE SCORE reached audiences all over the world due to its universal appeal. Wyclef Jean (1/3 of the Fugees) delves even deeper into his personal well of creative musicality on THE CARNIVAL, his solo debut. As a producer, Wyclef doesn't just sample records. He takes a pre-existing track and uses it as a foundation, building up layers of complex textures. Not many hip-hoppers would try rapping over the Bee Gees classic "Staying Alive," but Wyclef does it on "We Trying To Stay Alive" and makes it work. "Guatanamera," which features the vocals of Celia Cruz, takes an old Latin folk song and turns it into a totally contemporary piece. Full of inventive musicianship and devoid of hip-hop cliches, THE CARNIVAL is an impressive next step in the development of rap. SKU: 1001506

Places You Have Come To Fear The Most, The
Full title: The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most. Dashboard Confessional: Chris Carrabba (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel: Dan Bonebrake (bass, background vocals); Mike Marsh (drums, background vocals); Jolie Lindholm (background vocals). It will always be a difficult gambit writing intelligent, heartrending indie-rock guitar ballads wrought with agony without resorting to pretension, syrupy self-pity, or both. Dashboard Confessional manages to avoid such pitfalls with insightful, poignantly etched stories of the end of love and the edge of love, elegantly playing with words while keeping hackneyedlines and cornball moments at bay. DC's second album, THE PLACES YOU HAVE COME TO FEAR THE MOST, continues the Vagrant label's ascent into the forefront of earnest, emotional indie rock. Dashboard Confessional is actually the vehicle for the musings of one man, Chris Carraba. The frontman for at least two Florida rock bands, he derived the name from a line in one of his songs. Carraba wears his heart on his sleeve on pleading, stirring break-up songs like "The Good Fight" ("claimed you as my only hope and watched the floor as you retreated"), "Saints and Sinners" ('this apartment is starving for an argument") and the radio-ready "Screaming Infidelities" ("I'm missing your bed, I never sleep'). THE PLACES... suits Carraba's tortured soul well, and sets a seat for Dashboard Confessional at the ever-finicky emo table. SKU: 1074734

The work of rising Japanese pop star Cornelius is often compared to the sampladelic suburban b-boy collages of Beck and the Dust Brothers. The connection is somewhat validated by this set of his remixes of other artists, and it's clear that his objects of sonic affection include some of the cream of the sample-age bachelor pad set, including James Lavelle, Money Mark and Coldcut. His aesthetic, however, ultimately owes more to the playful noise of the Boredoms and the lo-fidelity tape-loop pop of early Smog. Unlike Beck, who achieves a sort of pop art by playing on the listener's ability to attach a set of personal associations to his source material, Cornelius' approach to sampling and remixing often feels like a therapeutic attempt to process the flood of western pop culture in which Japan has been immersed since WW II. Rather than exploiting western sounds or styles for irony, nostalgia or even disconcerting juxtaposition, the remixes present Beethoven, Beach Boy harmonies and tape clicks alike curiously devoid of context. These elements are reduced, if not to pure noise, at least to sound baubles, sparkly little gems picked magpie-like for the way they catch the light more than any assignable meaning. SKU: 5066498

Harvest Moon
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Kenny Buttrey, Tim Drummond, Ben Keith, Spooner Oldham, Astrid Young, Larry Cragg. Recorded at Redwood Digital, Woodside, California. Both artistically and stylistically HARVEST MOON is the successor to HARVEST, Neil Young's landmark acoustic album from 1971, which featured the No. 1 single, "Heart Of Gold." The song "Harvest Moon" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Record Of The Year." The song "Harvest Moon" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Song Of The Year." Neil Young's sequel to 1972's HARVEST found him reuniting with the Stray Gators and inviting along a few other famous friends. Unlike the Crazy Horse's sonic bludgeoning, the Gators' light playing featured ethereal-sounding pedal steel and harmonies that caressed like a gentle lover. This was the perfect compliment for Young's songwriting, which was fueled by romantic notions of courtship and deep thought. Young and the late Nicolette Larson harmonized and became the lovers of "You And Me" whereas Jack Nitzsche's string arrangements made for a nice contrast in "Such A Woman," a bold-faced declaration of love. Other insights into the normally cranky iconoclast's sentimental side include the delicate touch of the title track, which leaves an image of slow-dancing in adark corner. Fast approaching 50, Neil Young also used HARVEST MOON to reflect back on his life, particularly in the biographical "One Of These Days," and "From Hank To Hendrix," a twangy sequel to "My My, Hey Hey (Of The Blue)." Young also continued his commitment to the environment by including both a protest against man's destruction of nature ("War Of Man") and a live tribute to the forest and jungles recorded at a Portland, Oregon performance that included sounds of the Brazilian rainforest ("Natural Beauty.") Beautiful Chaos (Greatest Hits Live)
The Psychadelic Furs: Richard Butler (vocals); John Ashton, Richard Fortus (guitar); Tim Butler (bass); Earl Harvin (drums). Compilation producer: Richard Fortus. Recorded live at the House Of Blues, Los Angeles, California in 2001. Includes liner notes by Tony Fletcher. One of the coolest bands to emerge from the '80s UK new wave world, the Psychedelic Furs combined a gloriously trashy guitar sound with clever production, arch, Bowie-influenced melodicism and of course Richard Butler's Dylan-with-a-sore-throat vocals and lyrics. After the dissolution of Butler's fine post-Furs band Love Spit Love, the reconstituted Furs re-enter the recording fray with the stunning live album, which finds the singer still accompanied by his bass-playing brother Tim and original guitarist John Ashton. As indicated by the title, this disc finds the band rampaging through its best-loved tunes, from the slinky "The Ghost in You" to the stately "Sister Europe" and all-out rocker "Into You Like a Train." Ashton's guitar synthesizer does an amazing job of making up for the sax and keyboard parts from the studio versions, and the combination of carefullyorganized guitar din and elegantly debauched vocals is spot on. An impressive new track augurs well for the future, too. Welcome back, Furs. SKU: 1071840

Earthquake Glue
The first 25,000 copies are packaged in a numbered limited-edition digipak with a sticker. Guided By Voices: Robert Pollard, Doug Gillard, Nate Farley, Tim Tobias, Kevin March. Additional personnel includes: The Esther Dennis Middle School 8th Grade Band. Recorded at Cro Magnon Enterprises, Dayton, Ohio. Over the course of so many albums that all but the most rabid fans have lost track, Robert Pollard has fashioned himself an unlikely niche as the Grand Old Man of lo-fi alternative rock. With an uncanny ability to channel every '60s pop act from Chad & Jeremy to the Music Machine, Guided By Voices continues to spit out one ragged collection of Brian Wilson-class gems after another. Though Pollard is as legendary for his inconsistency as he is for his melodic genius, with EARTHQUAKE GLUE his band delivers one the most consistent efforts in its catalog. Kicking off with what sounds like a lost "A Quick One, While He's Away"-style Who mini-rock-opera, the album proceeds to display shining examples of all the patented GBV styles. There's straight-outta-'95 Merge Records-esque indie rock ("Useless Inventions") alongside Roky Erikson-approved acid-casualty fare, complete with druggy, melancholy vocals and inscrutable lyrics ("The Best Of Jill Hives"). The big surprise here, though, is that the band actually sounds "professional." Luckily, EARTHQUAKE GLUE isstill a GBV record, so the boys never let pesky proficiency get in the way of the songs' immediacy or seemingly effortless emotional resonance. SKU: 1085314

Don't Check Me With No Lightweight Stuff 1972-1975
Personnel includes: I Roy (vocals, DJ). Producers: Clive Chin, Winston Edwards, Keith Hudson, Bunny Lee, Jimmy Rodway. Compilation producer: Steve Barrow. Includes liner notes and an interview with I Roy by Steve Barrow. One of the great, original figures of Jamaican music, I-Roy (a.k.a. Roy Reid) came to prominence in the early '70s as a skilled DJ with a captivating, intellectual toasting style that emphasized his storytelling ability. I-Roy's warm, textured voice, conversational delivery, and his gift for riding a rhythm account for his great popularity throughout the '70s. This collection, which focuses on material released between 1972 and 1975, zeros in on what may be I-Roy's most productive and artistically fruitful period. Slinky grooves like "Hot Stuff," soulful raps such as "Black Talk," references to popular public figureslike Ken Boothe and Joe Frazier ("Ken Boothe Special" and "Don't Get Weary Joe Frazier") and oddly humorous narratives such as "Noisy Place" show the range and diversity of I-Roy's inimitable dancehall magic. This compilation serves not only as a perfect introduction to I-Roy's best material, but also acts as an wonderfully intriguing window into a lesser-known style of popular Jamaican music from the '70s. Unconditionally Guaranteed
Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band: Don "Captain Beefheart" Van Vliet (vocals, harmonica); Zoot Horn Rollo (guitar, slide guitar); Alex Saint Claire (guitar); Mark Marcellino (keyboards); Rockette Morton (bass); Art Tripp (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Andy DiMartino (acoustic guitar); Del Simmons (tenor saxophone, flute). After a two-year break from recording, Captain Beefheart signed with Mercury Records and released UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED in 1974. After the gradual shine that was brought to his music, culminating with the superbly produced CLEAR SPOT,this follow-up came as a bit of a surprise to the Captain's following. The album eschewed a good deal of the jagged and gritty qualities that had been a musical cornerstone of his work. Though the Magic Band (most of whom had been with Beefheart since TROUT MASK REPLICA) lend their musicianship to this project, they disbanded shortly after completing these recordings. While this work occupies a very different sonic world than some of its landmark predecessors, it's by no means a weak album. Still far from sounding like a Top Forty contender, it is a fairly straightforward set of blues-tinged pop songs filtered through the good Captain's inimitable style. SKU: 1004303

Personnel includes: Luke Vibert (programming, samples); B.J. Cole (various instruments, steel guitar, cheng); Bobby Valentino (vocals, guitar, mandolin, violin); Holly Penfield, Addie Brik (vocals); Ben Davies (cello). Includes liner notes by David Toop. Pedal steel guitarist B.J. Cole does make a bizarre foil for Luke Vibert (or is it the other way around?), and the strangeness of this collaboration is reflected here in the music. Vibert certainly has his trip-hop hat on here (his drum-and-bass forays are noticeably unplugged), but that doesn't mean he's forsaken the many styles he messes with--eclecticism is the name of the game on STOP THE PANIC. Ergo, there's the jazzy bloopfest of "This Stuff is Fresh," the faux big-beat of "Dischordzilla," and the synthetic luau-funk of "Fly Hawaii." Cole expertly dances around Vibert's warped rhythms and oddball sounds, contributing plucked refrains of pedal steel and sitar, especially on the dizzy "Cheng Phooey," where Vibert lays down a nicely loopy beatbox riff andinterstellar electronic blips under Cole's prickly strings. Entertainment [Remastered]
Family's second album is a perfect distillation of all the power and promise of the band's debut, MUSIC IN A DOLL'S HOUSE. "The Weaver's Answer" is a stunning opener that neatly sums up what Family are allabout. Inventive instrumentation (Leslie-d guitar, flutes, and saxophones) plays, while acoustic guitar and a snappy rhythm section provide a propulsive and forceful base. Family never sounds quaint or dated. Bassist and violinist Ric Grech's "Second Generation Woman" is a pared-down, riff-driven rocker. Sadly, it was his final contribution to the band, as he left to join the short-lived Blind Faith. The beautifully produced ENTERTAINMENT is filled with some of Family's early classics--"Observations From A Hill," "Hung Up Down," "How-Hi-The-Li," and "Emotions." As always, vocalist Roger Chapman's roars out of the finely sculpted musical tapestries like a madman on a mission of vital importance. ENTERTAINMENT captures the heady experimental rush that swept the British Isles in the wake of The Beatles' SERGEANT PEPPER. SKU: 1086163

Cannonball Adderley And The Poll Winners [Remastered]
Personnel: Cannonball Adderley (alto saxophone); Victor Feldman (vibraphone, piano); Wes Montgomery (guitar); Ray Brown (acoustic bass); Louis Hayes (drums). Producers: Orrin Keepnews, Cannonball Adderly. Reissue producers: Orrin Keepnews, Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Fugazi Hall, San Francisco, California on May 21, 1960; United Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California on June 5, 1960. Originally released on Riverside (9355). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This 1960 album is legendary in jazz circles for its lineup. The Pollwinners were a short-lived jazz supergroup comprising alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, bassist Ray Brown, and incomparable guitarist Wes Montgomery--the man who changed the concept of jazz guitar like nobody since Django Reinhardt. Backed with Adderley's drummer Louis Hayes and the piano and vibes of Victor Feldman, thePollwinners created a minor classic of '60s jazz. Not quite cool jazz and not quite hard bop, these seven tracks, including two very different takes of the sublime "Au Privave," are the bridge between these two seemingly disparate style. Montgomery's cool, ultra-melodic leads mesh with Adderley's more hard-edged tone much better than you might think, with each man accommodating the other without sacrificing his own style. This under-appreciated album is a non-stop delight, and the remastered version improves greatly on the sound of previous issues. SKU: 1018427

Liquor Giants
Liquor Giants: Ward Dotson (vocals, guitar); Max Ferguson (organ); Matt Simon (drums); Sheryl Farber, Lisa Jenio (background vocals). Almostimmediately after the unfortunate dissolution of his fine late-'80s roots rock quartet the Pontiac Brothers, southern California singer-guitarist Ward Dotson formed the equally accomplished Liquor Giants. Two initial releases, 1992's YOU'RE ALWAYS WELCOME and 1994's HERE, were hampered by poor distribution, and so the band's Matador Records debut, 1996's LIQUOR GIANTS feels in many ways like a triumphant fresh start. Dotson's likably plain voice is perfect for the wry lyrics of unsentimental yet unposturing tunes like "Hideous Pleasure" and "Jerked Around." While LIQUOR GIANTS lacks the pure pop hooks of later albums like EVERY OTHER DAY AT A TIME, it represents a clear step away from the Stones/Faces worship of the Pontiac Brothers into a poppier, more traditional musical realm not far removed from Roy Loney-era Flamin' Groovies or early Tom Petty. An excellent pop-rock album from an underrated band. SKU: 1080481

Brown Sugar
"Love Of My Life (An Ode To Hip)" (Erykah Badu & Common) won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. "Love Of My Life (An OdeTo Hip)" (Erykah Badu & Common) was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Urban/Alternative Performance and Best Song Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. For a film described as the African-American "When Harry Met Sally," this movie's music producers tapped into a wellspring of neo-soul rather than the Sinatra-like flavorings of Harry Connick, Jr. The result is BROWN SUGAR, a soundtrack packed with a dizzying array of talent drawn from the worlds of soul, hip-hop, and jazz. Among the many highlights are the sensual Erykah Badu/Common duet "Love Of My Life (An Ode To Hip Hop)," prodded along by light beats and feather-light organ fills, Angie Stone's sanctified "Bring Your Heart" and Jill Scott's wispy "Easy Conversation." Other tasty sounds include the Roots' hard-edged remix of "Act Too (Love Of My Life)," Eric B. and Rakim's classic "Paid In Full (7 Minutes Of Madness Coldcut Remix)," and Cassandra Wilson's delicate cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." Most impressive is renaissance man Mos Def, who takes time off from starring in the movie to appear on three versions of the title cut: a juicy "Extra Sweet" duet with Faith Evans, a jittery "Raw" take with Talib Kweli (aka Black Star), and a bouncy "Fine" solo turn. Nursery Cryme
Genesis: Tony Banks (vocals, 12-string guitar, keyboards); Mike Rutherford (vocals, 12-string guitar, bass); Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute); Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion); Steve Hackett (guitar). Recorded at Trident Studios, London, England. Digitally remastered by Nick Davis, Geoff Callingham & Chris Blair. Genesis's third album was a far cry from the delicate folk-rock tapestries and chiming 12-string guitars of its predecessor TRESPASS. The infusion of a semi-classical structural sensibility had become more prevalent. Fragile ballads are at a minimum, replaced by driving classical-rock epics (not that TRESPASS lacked for epics) full of heavy guitar and bass lines and sweeping mellotron. The sound occasionally recalls the refined but uncompromising instrumental attack of the Nice (particularly in Tony Banks's Keith Emerson-ish blasts of organ bravura). The interlocking guitar arpeggios and folkie moments are still present, however, providing contrast to NURSERY CRYME's bolder moments. The group's sophisticated compositional styleand Gabriel's eccentric lyrics are at their height on "The Return of the Giant Hogweed," "The Fountain of Salamacis" and "The Musical Box." SKU: 1004020

Lumpy Gravy
Personnel includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Jim Haynes, Tommy Tedesco, Al Viola, Dennis Budimer (guitar); Ted Nash, John Rotella, Bunk Gardner, Gene Cipriano (woodwinds); Jimmy Zito (trumpet); Vincent De Rosa, Richard Parisi (French horn); Kenneth Shroyer (trombone); Paul Smith, Mike Lang, Pete Jolly (keyboards); John Balkin, Jimmy Bond, Lyle Ritts (bass); Johnny Guerin, Frankie Capp, Shelly Manne (drums); Emil Richards, Victor Feldman (percussion); Louie The Turkey, Spider, Pumpkin (background vocals). Recorded in February 1967. Was it that Zappa's music was so far ahead of its time, or was it just not what we thought a weirdo genius like him should be doing? Either way, since his death, his stature as a serious composer has grown. Lumpy Gravy missed most by a mile because it was the first of Zappa's 'challenging' orchestral pieces, and not what his audience had come to expect. Performed by the Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, it was a lengthy instrumental suite broken up by equally 'challenging' dialogue. On the back cover, Frank looks out andasks, 'is this phase 2 of We're Only In It For The Money?'. No, we don't think so. SKU: 1001002

Sing It Again Rod
Cassette available on Mercury (824 882). NOTES: All tracks have been digitally remastered. After getting off to an explosive start by releasing four consecutive solo albums of solid material, Rod Stewart caught his breath by putting together the SING IT AGAIN ROD compilation. Appropriately enough, the originalvinyl release was shaped like a tumbler of whiskey in which the hard-drinking Stewart's grinning visage floated between a pair of ice cubes. Within the confines of the record were an assortment of covers (the Stones' "Street Fighting Man," Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe") and a handful of recordings either written by Stewart ("Mandolin Wind") or with either Martin Quittenton ("Maggie May") or Ron Wood ("Lost Paraguayos," "Gasoline Alley.") The one constant running through these compositions is the way in which Stewart gives himself over to a song. Liberally applying his soulful rasp, Stewart ranges from tender ruminations ("Country Comfort") to a raucous sensibility that gives an edge to something as genteel as the Motown sound ("[I Know] I'm Losing You".)
