Reggae Greats
Burning Spear includes: Winston Rodney (vocals). Producers: Jack Ruby, Winston Rodney, Karl Pitterson. Compilation producer: Trevor Wyatt. One of the most powerful and influential figures in reggae is Winston Rodney, a.k.a. Burning Spear. His brand of reggae has resisted commercialization, and has always maintained the Rastafarian spirit. Which is not to say his music is strident or angry--this collection of songs from his many albums on Island spans many moods, with his earthy, direct, and soulful voice soaring above the insidious rhythms and melodies. "Slavery Days" and "Throw Down Your Arms" become powerful anthems of pride and hope. Horns and keyboards are very prominent in Burning Spear's tunes, which are rich with the accents of American rhythm & blues. "Dry & Heavy" features spidery, blues-charged guitar playing and Rodney's almost disembodied voice, as if he were singing while overlooking a canyon; "Tradition" features him ina more relaxed, playful mood, as if he were trying to chase trouble away. Next to Bob Marley, virtually no one else in reggae can match Burning Spear's vocal range and passionate commitment to his music. SKU: 4123528

Forthelove...
Contains an untitled hidden track which follows "Sounds Like Me." The O'Jays: Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, Eric Grant. Additional personnel includes: Randall Bowland (electric guitar); Derek Nakamoto (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer); Matthew Rose (Fender Rhodes piano); Jon Pierce (bass). Producers: Eddie Levert Sr., Walter Williams, Matthew Rose, Steve Huff. Engineers include: Steve Croom, Craig Burbidge, Steve Durkee. FOR THE LOVE was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Album. Along with the Isley Brothers, The O'Jays turned out to be one of the few decade-spanning soul acts musically active into the new millennium. Like the Isleys, they concentrate more on affairs of the heart as opposed to the socio-political themes of their '70s heyday. The O'Jays 2001 MCA Records debut FOR THE LOVE keeps this trend going with ten cuts that can serve as a primer for the Jodecis and Dru Hill's of the world. Founding members Eddie Levert and Walter Williams continue to anchor the festivities whether on the intricate vocal interplay soaring over the percolating groove and darting strings of "Long Distance Lover" or the pure harmonizing of the Luther Vandross-like "I Don't Know." Newest member Eric Grant also takes an impressive turn in front of the mike amidst the flamenco-flavored nuances andjiggy swagger of "Latin Lover" and Memphis-tinged "Baby Making Love" that Al Green would be proud to call his own. Contrasting his smooth delivery is Levert's gruff phrasing, which adds an edge to the urgent quest for love that drives "Let's Ride." FOR THE LOVE is an exemplary outing for any act much less one that's soaring past its fourth decade in the biz. SKU: 1067794

Uncle Meat
Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention. Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, percussion); Roy Estrada (vocals, bass); Jimmy Carl Black (vocals, drums); Ray Collins, Nelcy Walker (vocals); Euclid James "Motorhead" Sherwood (tenor saxophone, tambourine); Bunk Gardner (piccolo, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano, alto & tenor saxophones, bassoon); Don Preston (piano); Ian Underwood (clarinet, flute, alto & baritone saxophones, piano, organ, harpsichord, celeste); Artie Tripp (vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, drums, tympani, wood blocks, bells, chimes); Ruth Komanoff (marimba). Recorded from October 1967 to February 1968. Includes liner notesby Frank Zappa. UNCLE MEAT was digitally remixed in 1987 with approximately 40 minutes of previously unreleased material from the original sessions. Over the two-record set, Zappa manages to cover the entire spread of his interests. Masquerading as a movie in progress, it is a way of highlighting the struggle of trying to keep the band together against a pretty hostile, or worse, apathetic audience. The frustration of putting something out that is artistically brilliant has a particular significance, as music and film go hand in hand. The film dialogue is either hilarious or it will leave you cold. The former is the general consensus. Zappa was so far ahead that his earth life ended before we caught up with him. Weird but highly recommended. SKU: 1001046

King Of The Blues Guitar
Recorded 1966-68. Backed by Booker T & the MGs and the Memphis Horns, Albert King (confusingly, no relation to Freddie or BB--though he named himself after the latter) shows off his spare, elastic, fluid guitar style on this definitive compilation. Songs such as "Laundromat Blues", "Oh, Pretty Woman," and the immortal "Crosscut Saw" with its sinuous, interweaving rhythms are blues classics, while "Born Under a Bad Sign" and "The Hunter" were later covered by Cream and Bad Company respectively. The combination of King and the Memphis musicians makes for some thrilling moments--particularly the guitar's entry under the horns on "Sign" and the interplay between King's guitar and Al Jackson's samba-style drums in "Crosscut Saw." Though King never achieved the fame of the man whose name he took, he created his fair share of great blues recordings, and KING OF THE BLUES GUITAR is an excellent primer to his unique style. Arhoolie Records 40th Anniversary
Full title: Arhoolie Records 40th Anniversary Collection: The Journey Of Chris Strachwitz 1960-2000. Contains a 66-page booklet. Compilation producer: Chris Strachwitz, Elijah Wald. Includes liner notes by Chris Strachwitz, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt & Elijah Wald. Digitally remastered by Mike Cogan (Bay Records, Berkeley, California). ARHOOLIE RECORDS 40TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Album Notes. Along with fellow enthusiasts Harry Smith, Moses Asch, and the Lomaxes, German-born Chris Strachwitz has spent his life chronicling ordinary people playing the kind of American folk music generally ignored by ongoing pop trends. For this spectacular 5-CD set, the label owner compiles 107 chronological tracks that he either personally recorded or was present for during a particular performance. This is no mean feat, considering that Strachwitz spent his time criss-crossing the South, hitting Houston ghettos, Louisiana juke joints, and Appalachian shanties armed with little more than a primitive recorder, the occasional companionship of a fellow music fan from the area, and a burning thirst for pure and unique sounds. Among the broad swath of important musicians included here who might have otherwise remained obscure or unknown had it not been for Strachwitz are Mance Lipscomb, Flaco Jimenez, and Clifton Chenier. Equally entertaining are anomalies like bluegrass great Del McCoury crooning "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight" in a Pennsylvannia living room, percussionist Bongo Joe banging out "I Wish I Could Sing" on customized oildrums, and classical Afghani lute player Aziz Herawi playing "Khandan-E Amaturi III" with his ensemble at a house party. Ultimate Collection, The (+DVD) [Digipak]
Personnel include: Michael Jackson (vocals, percussion); Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Seidah Garrett, Diana Ross (vocals); The Notorious B.I.G., Vincent Price (rap vocals); Chris Tucker (spoken vocals); Larry Carlton, Mike Sembello, Tito Jackson, David Williams , Marlo Henderson (guitar); Jim Horn (saxophone); David "Hawk" Wolinski (electric piano); Michael Boddicker (synthesizer); John Robinson , Nathan Watts, Bobby Watson (bass instrument); Ollie Brown, Bill Bottrell (drums); PaulinhoDa Costa, Randy Jackson, Richard Heath (percussion); Jim Gilstrap, Augie Johnson (background vocals); The Seawind Horns. Producers: Quincy Jones; Michael Jackson; Babyface; David Foster; R. Kelly. Recording information: 1969 - 2004. By 2004, Michael Jackson's bizarre image almost completely obscured the talent that had made him an international superstar. However, he became a musical icon by simply being the best at creating and performing pop songs. The opening moments alone of hits like "Rock with You" and "Billie Jean" would make them classic, but every aspect of these songs adds up to perfect radio pop. Jackson's THRILLER, after all, didn't simply luck into being the biggest-selling record of its time; each of its seven Top 10 hits had unique charms and drew from different elements of the pop universe. While there have been many previous Jackson hits collections, the four-CD/one-DVD ULTIMATE COLLECTION is just that--it represents Jackson's whole career, from his youthful days with the Jackson 5 to the early years of the 21st century. (The rare omissions--"Human Nature," "Heal the World"--show up live on the DVD.) Mixed in with his numerous hits are previously unreleased songs, demo versions of hits, album tracks, and odds and ends, most remarkably, one of the earliest versions of "We Are the World" with almost completely different lyrics. THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION expertly chronicles the career of one of the most important, if unusual, pop artists of all time. SKU: 6567367

Mamouna [Remastered]
Personnel: Bryan Ferry (vocals, strings, piano, keyboards, synthesizer); David Williams (guitar, background vocals); Phil Manzanera, Neil Hubbard, Chester Kamen, Jeff Thall, Nile Rogers, Robin Trower (guitar); Maceo Parker, Mike Paice, Andy MacKay (alto saxophone); Guy Fletcher (synthesizer); Nathan East, Pino Palladino, Guy Pratt (bass); Steve Ferrone (drums); Luke Cresswell, Luis Jardim, Steve Scales (percussion); Richard T. Norris (programming, loops); Rhett Davies (programming); Carleen Anderson, Jhelisa, Fonzi Thornton, Yannick Etienne, Paul Johnson (background vocals); Brian Eno, Nan Kidwell, Neil Jason. Recorded at Utopia, Olympic and Master Rock Studios, London, England. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. From his earliest days fronting Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry perfected a coy kind of R&B-based music with a techno-progressive overlay of synthesizers and post-industrial guitar thrash, even as his sly, dry martini vocals and fey lounge lizard poses defined a new style of urban chic. But with MAMOUNA, Ferry has fashioned an ambiguous, seductive, unsettling soundscape in which the old lounge lizard is now seen as a rootless romanticsearching for anything to hang on to, or the nearest exit--but as the menacing "Wildcat Days" suggests, there's "no way out." Ferry's songs personify longing, denial and spiritual ambivalence, but what makes MAMOUNA so special is its atmospheric mix of guitars and keyboards, its taut, spatial selection of laid back dance grooves. Adding to the power of his funk are a who's who of top rock and R&B musicians, including guitarist Nile Rodgers, James Brown/P-Funk alumni Maceo Parker and ex-Roxy Music collaborators Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay and Brian Eno. The return of Eno has a profound effect on Ferry's music, as his moody sound processing lends an Oriental ambience to each arrangement, to particular effect on the title tune, with its mystic pan-Arabic airs, and the suave, mysterious "N.Y.C." Ferry makes the most of these hypnotic grooves on the seductive, bluesy "Gemini Moon," the R&B foreplay of "Chain Reaction," and the decadent "Your Painted Smile." SKU: 1025409

Scream Dracula Scream
Rocket From The Crypt: Speedo (vocals, guitar); ND (guitar); Apollo 9 (saxophone); JC2000 (trumpet); Petey X (bass); Atom (drums). Additional personnel: Mick Collins, Frank Daly (vocals); Eric Christian (guitar); Don Palmer, Jay Rosen (violin); James Ross (viola);Raymond Kelley (cello); John Reis, Sr. (accordion); Geoff Harrington (Hammond B-3 organ); Diane Gordon, Natalie Burks, Latina Webb, Roger Freeland, Gene Miller, Joseph Pizzulo (background vocals). Recorded in early 1995. With the gleeful, overwhelming fury of a runaway train, Rocket From The Crypt's second major-label album, SCREAM, DRACULA, SCREAM!, proves there is still some fight left in guitar-rock's supposedly decomposing body, that three chords and a furious pace can still be a road-map to some twisted version of salvation, and that, regardless of what even the album's liner notes tell you, punk rock is not dead. Spurred on by a two-man horn section that seemingly learned to play by listening to STICKY FINGERS-era Stones, RFTC embrace rock's leather-clad traditions--from Eddie Cochran to The Ramones--with a rambunctious, all-or-nothin' attitude. So, of course the songs are anthemic, with very-rock-and-roll lyrics that both the young and the young-at-heart can shout in rebellion--the priceless chorus of "Born In '69" goes: "I want it/I need it/I steal it/ALL RIGHT!!!" But the songs never descend into watered-down formulas. That's because RFTC also have a grasp of where the noise they're harnessing comes from. Touches of Spectorian production, lyrical and musical allusions to The Stooges, and a JB-like tightness o' groove all litter SCREAM, DRACULA, SCREAM!'s landscape--turning what seems to be so simple into much, much more. Paris 1960
Cannonball Adderley Quintet: Cannonball Adderley (alto saxophone); Nat Adderley (cornet); Victor Feldman (piano); Sam Jones (bass); Louis Hayes (drums); Norman Granz. Producer: Norman Granz. Reissue producer: Eric Miller. Recorded live at Salle Pleyel, Paris, France on November 25, 1960. Includes liner notes by Chris Sheridan. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Capturing theentirety of one of Norman Granz's legendary Jazz at The Philharmonic sets, complete with an effusive introduction by Granz himself, PARIS 1960 is one of the best of the many live recordings of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. The 55-minute set finds the alto saxophonist at a pivotal point in his career, as he was moving away from hard bop into the funkier, more groove-oriented, but no less technically masterful soul-jazz style that made him a star in the '60s. The opening "Jeannine" is a hard-bop standard, but the Adderley quintet, featuring (as always) his brother Nat on cornet, stretches it out, sounding relaxed yet still intense. "The Chant," which Adderley had just recorded with his sideline group (the Pollwinners, featuring Wes Montgomery), sounds completely different--but no less outstanding--in its guitar-less arrangement. PARIS 1960 is essential for Adderley fans. SKU: 3104375

Mink Car
They Might Be Giants: John Flansburgh, John Linnell. The Band Of Dans: Dan Miller (guitar); Dan Weinkauf (bass); Dan Hickey (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Mike Doughty (vocals); Garo Yellin (cello); Jim O'Connor (flugelhorn); Dan Levine (trombone); Guy Pratt (bass); Hearn Gadbois, Luis Jardim (percussion); Chris Maxwell, Phil Hernandez (programming). Producers include: Albert Caiati, Pt Dillett, Clive Lnager, Alan Winstanley, Adam Schlesinger. Engineers include: Jason Spittle, Cosmo Heidtman, TJ Doherty. When They Might Be Giants first appeared in the late '80s, it was hard to predict that the whimsical alt-rock duo would still be going strong over a dozen years later. However, MINK CAR stands as further proof of the band's staying power, mostly attributable to the endlesslyinventive songcraft of Johns Linnell and Flansburgh. These days, the pair fleshes out the TMBG sound with a backing band that includes a couple of erstwhile members of the late, lamented Lincoln, the Chris Temple-headed band that logged a lot of road time with the Giants in the late '90s. In the manner of the surprise hit "Istanbul," there's a zany-sounding cover tune here, a funky take on Georgie Fame's "Yeh Yeh," but the Johns' own songs are clearly the centerpiece. "Man It's So Loud in Here" is a devilishly clever satire of dance music and club culture, appropriately set to a pounding dance beat. "Older" is an ironically ominous meditation on aging. Amid the tomfoolery, though, the Giants always manage to sneak in a couple of touching gems. In this case, the pure pop romance of "Another First Kiss" and the celebratory, misleadingly titled "Hopeless Bleak Despair" fill the bill, making MINK CAR a solid addition to the band's catalogue. Break The Cycle
This is a Hyper CD which contains regular audio tracks and provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Staind: Aaron Lewis (vocals); Mike Mushok (guitar); Johnny "Old School" April (bass); Jon Wysocki (drums). Recorded at NRG Studios, Los Angeles, California; Longview Farm Studios, North Brookfield, Massachussetts; Southbeach Studios, Miami Beach, Florida; Electric Lady Recording Studio, New York, New York. Most modern hard rock bands miss the mark by over-emphasizing great riffs and neglecting the importance of complementary vocals. Luckily, such is not the case with Staind, who owe some nods to Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst for career guidance. Durst encouraged vocalist Aaron Lewis to sing more and scream less, which proved to be a key factor in the band's development. The appeal of Staind lies in the purity and fierce emotional integrity of their music, traits seldom seen in heavy rock since Suicidal Tendencies and Pantera ruled the roost. Lewis's moonlighting as a solo acoustic performer in the band's lean years serves Staind well as BREAK THE CYCLE boasts awell balanced set of thrashy material ("Open Your Eyes" and "Safe Place") offset by more gentle rock ballads ("Fade" and "Suffer"). It is the impact of those ballads that sets Staind apart from their new-metal brethren. The radio-bound "It's Been Awhile" and full-band treatment of "Outside" strike universal chords, effectively capturing the bitterness of regret and facing reality with brooding hopefulness. Speaking Of Now
Personnel includes: Pat Metheny (acoustic & electric guitars, synthesizer); Cuong Vu (vocals, trumpet); Richard Bona (vocals, acoustic guitar, fretless bass, percussion); Dave Samuels (marimba, percussion); Lyle Mays (piano, keyboards); Steve Rodby (cello, acoustic bass); Antonio Sanchez (drums). Producers include: Pat Metheny, Steve Rodby, Lyle Mays. Recorded at Right Track Studio, New York, New York in 2001. SPEAKING OF NOW won the 2003 Grammy Award forBest Contemporary Jazz Album. "As It Is" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "Proof" (Pat Metheny) was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Guitarist/composer extraordinaire Pat Metheny has never been one to stand still for long, and on SPEAKING OF NOW, his mercurial muse finds working with a new band and exploring new sounds. Though Metheny's trademark guitar style remains in the same general vein as on previous releases, it's surrounded by a different sonic framework. Young Vietnamese trumpeter Cuong Vu took time out from making a name for himself on his own sui generis jazz releases to lay down some tasteful, Miles-inspired trumpet, while Richard Bona's percussion and vocals add a South American feel (Metheny's flirted with Brazilian influences before, but not in this context. Despite the new developments, Metheny's longtime right-hand man Lyle Mays mans the keyboards to produce the kind of twinkling piano tones and contemplative, gauzy synth textures that are time-tested to mesh pefectly with the leader's distinctive guitar sound. Reading Writing And Arithmetic
The Sundays emerged at the endof the '80s, with their demeanor and acoustic pop at odds with the house explosion and baggy phenomenon of the time. Despite this, READING, WRITING & ARITHMETIC is as compelling as anything to come out of Manchester or an 808 drum machine. Identified as a female-led version of the Smiths, such comparisons were borne out by the dynamics of the Sundays' central duo and the quality of this debut release. David Gavurin's guitar-playing undoubtedly evokes the unpretentious expression of Johnny Marr, whether gently chiming over "Can't Be Sure," gaily strumming for the coda of "My Finest Hour," or whipping up a racket on "A Certain Someone." Harriet Wheeler's voice is from another world entirely: soaring, pure, acrobatic, doleful, and with a penchant for the self-possessed babbling of Liz Fraser. Where intelligible, the lyrics take Morrissey's conversational style and predilection for colloquialisms to the extreme, delivered from the perspective of a melancholic girl wracked by self-consciousness and pity. Each of the 10 tracks boasts an effortless sense of melody and depth of emotion that, together, belittle any attempt to offer praise. READING, WRITING & ARITHMETIC is simply perfect. SKU: 1000214

Dance Collection
This is a compilation of 12" extended version re-mixes with some previously unreleased material. Producers: Georgio Moroder, Pete Bellotte, Gary Klein. Compilation producer: Bill Levenson. A fine collection of the original 12-inch dance mixes of eight of Donna Summer's classic disco singles--half of which have never appeared on CD before--this compilation is a must for disco fans. If for no other reason, DANCE COLLECTION is indispensable because it contains the full 17-minute "MacArthur ParkSuite," possibly Summer's most gloriously over-the-top record ever, which was excised from the CD edition of her LIVE AND MORE double album. Other highlights include the stunningly minimal "I Feel Love," as hypnotic as a classic krautrock track by Kraftwerk or Neu!, and softened only slightly by Summer's erotic lead vocal. Shockingly, Summer's first hit, "Love to Love You Baby," is not included. This 18-minute track is quite possibly the most influential 12-inch single ever released, and the lack of it is puzzling in this otherwise excellent compilation. SKU: 1019938

Buddy And Soul
Personnel: Buddy Rich (drums); Don Menza (soprano & tenor saxophones, flute); Joe Romano, Ernie Watts (alto saxophone, flute, clarinet); RichieCole (alto saxophone); Pat LaBarbara (tenor saxophone, flute, clarinet); Don Englert (tenor saxophone); Joe Calo (baritone saxophone); Nat Pavone, Dave Culp, Bob Vance, Sal Marquez, Mike Price, Darryl Eaton, Ollie Mitchell, Ken Faulk (trumpet); Rick Stepton, Vince Diaz (trombone); Don Switzer (bass trombone); David Lahm (acoustic & electric pianos, organ); Herb Ellis, David Dana, Freddy Robinson (guitar); Bob Magnusson (acoustic & electric basses); Larry Bunker, Victor Feldman (percussion). Producer: Richard Bock. Reissue producers: Bob Belden, Dean Pratt. Recorded live at Western Recorders, Hollywood, California on January 3 and April 16 & 17, 1969 and at The Whiskey A Go-Go, Hollywood, California on June 22, 1969. Originally released on Pacific Jazz (20158). Includes liner notes by Dean Pratt. All tracks have been digitally remastered. By 1969, Buddy Rich was fully into his rock & roll mode, working his band through arrangements of pop songs of the day and rock or funk originals by the best writers and arrangers in the business. Recorded live in Hollywood at Western Recorders and the infamous Whiskey A Go-Go, BUDDY AND SOUL represents a high spot in this period of Rich's storied career. To be sure, Rich was a dyed-in-the-wool swing drummer, but he could still drive a rocking beat with the best of them while pushing his enormous band to its limits. The Rich band of this period spotlighted many names that were or would become highly respected members of the world jazz stage. Featured here are such stellar players as trumpeter Sal Marquez, saxophonists Ernie Watts, Don Menza and Pat LaBarbara, and guitarist Herb Ellis. It's the style of music, however, that will draw the most attention as complex arrangements of the Doors' "Soul Kitchen" and "Hello, I Love You" and a psychedelic "Greensleeves" will surely perk up the ears of most fans of Buddy's work. Also present is the work of many respected composers/arrangers including Don Sebesky, Bill Holman and Don Piestrup. SKU: 1037016

In Action
Thelonious Monk Quartet: Thelonious Monk (piano); Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass); Roy Haynes (drums). Recorded live at the Five Spot Cafe, New York, New York on July 9 and August 7, 1958. Originally released on Riverside (1190). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1988, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). By 1958, Thelonious Monk was a fixture on the New York club scene, thanks to his legendary 1957 engagement at the Five Spot. Piano, tenor, bass and drums became Monk's favored mode of instrumentation throughout the '60s, when he surfed the crest of his popularity as a major artist (cover of Time magazine), on a major label (Columbia), with some underrated bands. Recorded live at the Five Spot, the quartet on THELONIOUS IN ACTION (and MISTERIOSO) ranks with his greatest working aggregations, allowing Monk to fully explore the orchestral dimensions of jazz within a small band context. The hard-swinging tenor giant Johnny Griffin was a key contributor. Like his soulmate Dexter Gordon, Griffin managed to traverse the differing approaches of Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young and Charlie Parker, combining them into a coherent style with the brawny blues power of Chicago tenor men such as Gene Ammons. With his fervent technique, magisterial sound, opulent harmonic command and keen sense of humor, Griffin's unbridled melodic inventions were a continual source of inspiration to Monk. "Light Blue" is just that, an elegant, jaunty little dance, while "Coming On The Hudson," with its enigmatic head and dissonant bridge, points to the future directions of Monk's spiritual son, Cecil Taylor. On a remarkable version of "Rhythm-A-Ning" bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik's burly sound and open harmonic conception keep things in motion, as Griffin soars above it all with intricate rhythmic lines. Monk's stabbing little phrases are an antidote to Griffin's complexity, as he works his way into a stride-flavored harmonic cycle before allowing his inventions to melt into Malik's charging lines and fiercely melodic drum solo. And on "Evidence" the drummer is clearly inspired by the tune's rhythmic stops and starts; at times his phrasing suggests Monk's contrasting thematic motifs or the rhythmic counterpunches of brass and reed sections. Griffin begins at full throttle, seemingly enunciating every chordal nuance--he temporarily releases the pressure gauge with demure references to "Skip To My Lou" and the tune's antecedent, "Just You, Just Me"--while Monk's terse response suggestsguitar phrasing. McGarrigle Hour, The
Personnel: Kate McGarrigle (vocals, guitar, banjo, accordion, piano); Anna McGarrigle (vocals, guitar, accordion, piano, bass); Loudon Wainwright (vocals, guitar); Chaim Tannenbaum (vocals, whistle, mandolin); Rufus Wainwright, Jane McGarrigle (vocals, piano); Martha Wainwright, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Lily Lanken, Dane Lanken, Sylvan Lanken (vocals); Philippe Tartartcheff (spoken vocals); Michel Pepin (guitar, mandolin, bass, drums); Joel Zifkin (violin); Tom Mennier (piano); John McColgan (drums, percussion). Recorded at Le Studio Morin Heights, Morin Heights, Quebec, Canada and Studio Frission, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Includes liner notes by Jane McGarrigle. This elegantly produced family album contains an embarassment of riches. For the McGarrigles aren't just any family. Besides sisters Kate and Anna (and Jane), there's Kate's ex-husband Loudon Wainwright, their singer/songwriter offspring Rufus and Martha Wainright as well as old friends like multi-instrumentalist Chaim Tannebaum and producer Joe Boyd. Add guests Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris and the table can get a little crowded here. The atmosphere never loses that saving intimacy however. Each individual is allowed his or her moment in the limelight--Rufus shines especially on his original "Heartburn," Martha on hers, "Year Of the Dragon." Most of the numbers are old-timey parlor songs--whether public domain traditional folk, Stephen Foster's "Gentle Annie" or Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do." The McGarrigles' special gift has always been to invest this homespun material with something other than "traditional" values. This get-together--the sisters' best record in years--is no exception. Their music remains sharp and pungent, a little acerbic, and always mindful of the tragic undercurrentlurking beneath the surface warmth. SKU: 1001667

Night Calls
Personnel: Joe Cocker (vocals); John Miles (guitar, organ, Hammond organ, keyboards, tambourine, background vocals); Phil Grande, Mike Campbell, Danny Kortchmar (guitar); Deric Dyer (saxophone); Chris Stainton (piano, keyboards); Benmont Tench, Ian McLagan (Hammond organ); Rory Kaplin, Greg Phillinganes, David Paich (keyboards); Neil Stubenhaus, T.M. Stevens (bass); Steve Holley (drums, percussion); Mike Baird, Jim Keltner (drums); Jim Brock (timbales); Alex Acuna (percussion); Marti Jones, Michelle Cross, Debra Lewis-Brown, Geraldine Clark, Maxine Sharp, Cydney Davis, The Water Sisters, The New Life Community Choir (background vocals); Jeff Lynne. Producers: David Tickle, Chris Lord-Alge, Danny Kortchmar, Jeff Lynne. Engineers include: Chris Lord-Alge, David Tickle, Richard Dodd. Recorded at The Village Recorder and A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California; Rumbo Studios, Canoga Park, California. Unlike Cocker's two previous studio albums, NIGHT CALLS was produced by several different hands, a decisionthat ultimately pays off in the album's overall variety (the title track, for example, with its sampled drums and multiple guitar lines courtesy of writer/producer Jeff Lynne, doesn't sound anything at all like the rest of the record). In any case, Cocker is clearly energized throughout, particularly on Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" and a mysterioso take on Steve Winwood's "Can't Find My Way Home." Best of all is the re-imagining of the Beatles "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away." Cocker casts it as an impassioned piece of neo-Gospel, which is a conceptual masterstroke in a league with his classic take on "With a Little Help From My Friends." SKU: 1000819
