Guitar On The Go
Personnel: Wes Montgomery (guitar); Mel Rhyne (organ); George Brown, Paul Parker, Jimmy Cobb (drums). Recorded in New York, New York in 1959 and 1963. Originally released on Riverside (9494). Includes original liner notes by Bob Messinger. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley). Wes Montgomery's last record for Riverside found him the company of organist Mel Rhyne, with whom he had cut his first album for that label just four years earlier. In fact, GUITAR ON THE GO includes a Rhyne/Montgomery take from 1959: the original "Missile Blues," named for the lounge in Indianapolis where Montgomery had worked a steady gig before the jazz world discovered him. The guitarist clearly loved to play the blues, and this set includes two more, "Geno" and "Fried Pies." In true reissue fashion GUITAR ON THE GO includes previously unreleased material. In this case that material is pretty noteworthy: an unidentified solo tune which Riverside producer Orrin Keepnews claims was one of only two such solos to be recorded for the label (the other was "While We're Young" on SO MUCH GUITAR). It's a beautiful, reflective closer to the album and to Montgomery's Riverside period. From 1964 until his premature death Montgomery would record a variety of morearranged and orchestrated albums with Creed Taylor (a notable exception being the live SMOKIN' AT THE HALF NOTE set), but in 1963 he was still just burning it up with small combos such as this. Ray Of Light
Personnel: Madonna (vocals); William Orbit (guitar, electronics); Mark Moreau (guitar);Pablo Cook (flute); Marius De Vries (keyboards, programming); Fergus Gerrand (drums, percussion); Steve Sidelnyk (programming); Donna DeLory, Niki Harris (background vocals). Producers: Madonna, William Orbit, Patrick Leonard, Marius De Vries. Engineers include: Pat McCarthy, David Reitzas, Jon Englesby. Recorded at Larrabee Studios North, Universal City, California. RAY OF LIGHT won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album and for Best Recording Package, and was nominated for Album Of The Year. "Ray Of Light" won the 1999 Grammy for Best Dance Recording and Best Short Form Music Video, and was nominated for Record Of The Year. Relentlessly contemporary, RAY OF LIGHT pairs Madonna with producer William Orbit, an electronics wizard who has worked with major R&B acts and even such modern rockers as Blur and Depeche Mode. Reportedly, Madonna tried to snare Liam Howlett of high-strung techno-rockers the Prodigy into the project--Howlett claims to have turned her down. But the more dextrous, less in-your-face Orbit was probably a better choice anyway. He provides a dizzying array of soundscapes, incorporating everything from psychedelic-rock guitar to dub-reggae echo and cold, cutting techno beats for what critics are calling Madonna's most committed performance in years. From the slow chill of the album's first single, "Frozen," to the disco-like title track, RAY OF LIGHT finds Madonna embracing the club beats that are her roots while still teetering on the edge of dance-club vogue. It also finds the singer, who has become a mother since her last studio album, in a long-untapped spiritual mode. When the inevitable comparisons are made to Madonna's previous standard-bearer, 1989's LIKE A PRAYER, that may well be the reason. SKU: 1031059

Chieftains Vol.6
Chieftains: Martin Fay, Sean Keane (fiddle); Derek Bell (harp, oboe, tiompan); Michael Tubridy (flute, concertina, tin whistle); Paddy Moloney (Uillean pipes, tin whistle, bodhran); Sean Potts (tin whistle, bodhran). Recorded at Island Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Garech de Brun & Richard Ryan. All tracks have been digitally remastered. 1989 BONAPARTE'S RETREAT may be a typical album for the Chieftains, but drab it is not. The world-famous ensemble, strongly versed in the traditions of Celtic music, offers nine tracks of reels, jigs, airs, and hornpipes. The Chieftains seek to authenticate their ancestors' music for modern audiences. Like so much of the Chieftains' work, the strongly historical BONAPARTE'S RETREAT explores the rich, often bloody history of Ireland's contact with Europe and the New World. The album begins with a medley of reels ("The Dunmore Lassies," "The Pigeon on the Gate") and a slip jig called "Top it Off." At its climax, the latter morphs into "The Chattering Magpie," another playful reel. The title track is an amazing collage of programmatic music that documents the rise and fall of the Corsican Emperor of France. Along similar lines, "The Rights of Man" is a hornpipe composed in honor of Thomas Paine's historical treatise defending the French revolution. SKU: 5073439

Laid [Remastered]
James: Tim Booth (vocals); Saul Davies (guitar, violin); Larry Gott (guitar, background vocals); Mark Hunter (keyboards); Jim Glennie (bass); David Baynton-Power (drums). Additional personnel: Brian Eno, Martine McDonagh, The Kitchenettes (background vocals). Engineers: Benedict Fenner, Steve "Doc" Williams. Recorded at Real World, Box, England and The Windings, Wrexham, Wales. This Manchester-based band had already been around for 10 years by the time this seminal release hit stores. The band had always experimented in the studio and had long wantedto work with Brian Eno--and for LAID their wish was granted. The results are a combination of crowd-pleasing anthems, quiet ballads, and lullabies, all of which benefit greatly from the atmospheric tones of the sparser Eno-led production. Leading off with the spectacularly paranoid slow number "Out to Get You" and then moving straight into the upbeat "(Sometimes) Lester Piggott" and then see-sawing between the two states from there, LAID mirrors the therapy enriched lives of its creators. Lead singer Tim Booth's vision especially shines through in this collection, which was the band's first commercially successful record in the U.S. (Morrissey fans take note--Booth is allegedly who Morrissey is referring to in the single "We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful.") Best known on LAID is the title track, a joyous paean to obsessive love. Play very loud. SKU: 1068995

Miles Davis At Fillmore
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Steve Grossman (soprano saxophone); Chick Corea (Fender Rhodes piano); Keith Jarrett (organ); Dave Holland (acoustic & electric basses); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Airto Moreira (percussion). Recorded live at The Fillmore East, New York, New York on June 17-20, 1970. Includes liner notes by Jack DeJohnette. All tracks have been digitally remastered. AT FILLMORE is the second release to document Miles' live presentation of BITCHES BREW's breakthroughs. Brokenup into four parts, it shows the unprecedented growth of the same band that recorded BLACK BEAUTY just three months earlier. The addition of Keith Jarrett's organ expands the music even further over the borders that defined "jazz," creating a singular hybrid of rock, blues and jazz. Once again, chaos dwells within the belly of this musical beast. From the electro-static of "The Mask" through the end of "It's About That Time," Davis, Jarrett, Chick Corea and Steve Grossman remain inextricably intertwined. And at the center there's always Miles and his trumpet--spurring his charges towards unexplored territory, ever ready to fall off the edge of the cliff just to land back on his feet. SKU: 1000580

George Thorogood And The Destroyers
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Personnel: George Thorogood (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Billy Blough (bass); Jeff Simon (drums); Uncle Meat Pennington (tambourine, maracas). Recorded at Dimension Sound Studios, Boston, Massachussets. Blues flash George Thorogood's first album is a low-budget, no frills affair that, for whatever reason, sounds pretty much like his '80s major label hits, which is a tribute to the consistency of his musicalvision. Although he's no Eric Clapton, Thorogood's a pretty good guitarist, though he's not much more than just an okay singer. But that doesn't really matter, because this is the blues as garage band party music. It's designed to be cranked out a top volume at some place where beer is plentiful, and subtlety or deep feeling would be more or less extraneous. Thorogood does, however, have excellent taste in covers; here he has infectious rowdy fun with songs by Elmore James, Bo Diddley, and John Lee Hooker, whose "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" he more or less appropriated as a theme song. Music For The Morning After
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Pete Yorn (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, synthesized strings, bass, drums, percussion, handclaps); R. Walt Vincent (electric guitar, banjo, harmonica, Wurlitzer piano, vibraphone, bass, programming); Marc Dauer (violin); Brad Wood (jaw harp, melodica, synthesizer, percussion, programming). Producers: Pete Yorn, Brad Wood, R. Walt Vincent, Don Fleming, Ken Andrews. Engineers include: Pete Yorn, Brad Wood, R. Walt Vincent. Don't hate singer-songwriter Pete Yorn for the nepotistic show-biz connections that detractors claim are the source ofhis record deal. Hate him instead for the fact that he comes up with more hook-filled, radio-ready potential hits than you and your whole family. With a sensibility based firmly on American roots rock a la Tom Petty, John Cougar, the Wallflowers, etc., Yorn yokes catchy guitar riffs to memorable choruses and note-perfect arrangements on song after song here. It usually takes a new artist a few albums to hone their craft this well, but Yorn got it right his first time out. SKU: 1063658

Speak Of The Devil
Personnel includes: Chris Isaak (vocals, guitar); Hershel Yatovitz (guitar, vocals); Rowland Salley (bass, vocals); Kenney Dale Johnson (drums, vocals); David Palmer, Jamie Mahobric, Matt Chamberlain, John Pierce, Patrick Warren, Steve Ferrone, Curt Bisquera, Jimmy Pugh, Frank Marti, Mark Needham, Cynthia Corra, Mary Dunaway, Juolie Lorch, Wendy Waller, Terry Wood. Producers: Chris Isaak, Erik Jacobsen, Rob Cavallo. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Gorgeous and vibrant, SPEAK OF THE DEVIL boasts the strong crooning of Chris Isaak backed by the full-bodied, twanging guitar that's made his music such a distinctive pleasure since the mid-'80s. Isaak's focus on love and the different phases of relationships means that songs range from the built-up desperation in "Please" to the airy optimism of "Flying," punched up by chirpy background singers. Silvertone (whose collective name is unacknowledged here) continues to be the most underrated back-up band in the biz, with their distinctive rootsy mix of blues, rockabilly and country. Hershel Yatovitz's shimmering guitar is pumped with reverb to add the proper urgency to "Wanderin'" and he contributes Spanish-flavored acoustic guitar to "Don't Get So Down On Yourself." But for all the smoldering edge thatIsaak puts on slower songs such as the enticing "Talkin' Bout A Home," the Californian excels on faster numbers like the swinging "I'm Not Sleepy." Isaak's adventurousness leads him to end the album with the noirish instrumental "Super Magic 2000," complete with Peter Gunn-like tempo and solid surf-guitar adornments mixed with chirping crickets and blasting shotgun sound effects. Marshall Mathers LP, The (Explicit)
Personnel: Eminem, Snoop, Xzibit, Nate Dogg, Sticky Fingaz (rap vocals); Dido (vocals); Jeff Bass, Steve Berman, Paul "Bunyan" Rosenberg (spoken vocals); Mike Elizondo (guitar, keyboards, bass); Sean Cruise, John Bingham (guitar); Tommy Coster, Jr., Camara Kambon (keyboards); DJ Head (programming). D-12: Kon Artis, Proof, Kuniva, Swifty, Bizarre (rap vocals). Producers include: Dr. Dre, The 45 King, Mel-Man, F.B.T., Eminem. Engineers: Richard "Segal" Huredia, Mike Butler, Aaron Lepley. THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "The Real Slim Shady" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year. A Caucasian rapper from Detroit, a Dr. Dre disciple with bright blonde hair--by rights Eminem should be the biggest cheeseball in the hip-hop universe. However, his debut, THE SLIM SHADY LP, contained clever rhymes and even the occasional innovation. His sophomore effort, THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP, is about as subtle as a Detroit Devil's Night and proves Eminem's no fluke, butinstead a most unlikely rap visionary. While his horror/shock rap can be repetitive, it's more often hilarious, as he and his Slim Shady character skewer anyone and everyone, notably the MTV-based world that surrounded him after the success of his first record. Few can come up with rhymes as consistently clever as this Motor City madman, and lines which will be repeated as long as this CD is spun. The most startling moment has to be "Stan," featuring haunting, ethereal guest vocals from Dido; an incongruously sublime track, it spins an o henry-meets-'60s teenage-death-song tale of obsessed fan worship gone terribly wrong. Love Letters From Elvis
Recorded at RCA Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Christopher Niccoli. Digitally remastered by Dick Baxter (August 1992, BMG Recording Studios, New York). In June 1970, Elvis held a five-day recording marathon, during which he completed 34 songs. The impressive results of these sessions allowed RCA to create two thematically coherent Elvis albums, LOVE LETTERS FROM ELVIS and ELVIS COUNTRY (other tracks from these sessions appear on THAT'S THE WAY IT IS and ELVIS NOW). Since most Elvis songs concern romance, the "love letters" theme of this album does little to distinguish it from most Presley records. Nonetheless, LOVE LETTERS FROM ELVIS benefits from a strong collection of songs representing most of the musical strands of Elvis' later career: bigdramatic ballads, Charlie Rich-style Memphis boogie, and the occasional rocker, all framed by Presley's large, excellent band and plenty of background vocals. Fans who most enjoy the King's early recordings might find LOVE LETTERS and his other '70s releases too overblown, but those willing to accept Presley's proclivity for musical flamboyance will find plenty to enjoy here. Outtakes from Elvis' June 1970 sessions are available on ESSENTIAL ELVIS VOL. 4: A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW. SKU: 5046641

Thrillington
Personnel includes: Richard Hewson (conductor). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England. Originally released in 1977, THRILLINGTON is perhaps the most obscure album to be issued by a former Beatle. It's safe to assume that part of the reason why this album has received so little attention is thatPaul McCartney does not even appear on the recording. The origins of THRILLINGTON date back to 1971, when McCartney hired English arranger/conductor Richard Hewson to record an orchestral version of McCartney's recently released RAM album. Though Hewson quickly composed and recorded a delightfully eclectic interpretation of RAM, the results were not released until 1977, when the recordings were issued under the fictitious artist name of Percy "Thrills" Thrillington, who, as the story went, was an Irish bandleader signed to McCartney's production company. While the album was not a commercial success, it does feature some lovely music, including jazzy versions of McCartney compositions like "Dear Boy" and "Smile Away" and a big pop production number of "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" that will be of interest to both McCartney fans and aficionados of kitschy, lounge-oriented instrumental music. Jamaican ET
Personnel includes: Lee "Scratch" Perry (vocals); Anthony Harty (guitar); Leigh Malin (tenor saxophone); Justin Dodsworth (keyboards); Nick Walsh (bass); Al Fletcher (drums); Anthony Harty (electronic percussion); Sharron Naylor, Michelle Naylor (background vocals). Producers: Lee "Scratch" Perry, Roger Lomas. Recorded at Ro-Lo Studios, Coventry, England. JAMAICAN E.T. won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. For a legendary dub pioneer who's as famed for burning down his own studio as for the countless groundbreaking records he's created, THE JAMAICAN E.T. is an appropriate title. Spiritually akin perhaps to the likes of the equally visionary Sun Ra, Perry is generally regarded as equal parts genius and crackpot. This combination has made for an inconsistent discography throughout the '90s, but the 21st century seems to be agreeing with Perry, as this proved to be one of his most solid outings in some time. The opener, whichdraws on a roots vibe full of celebratory I-Threes-style backing vocals, starts things off on an enthusiastic note. A version of the Staple Singers' "I'll Take You There" is appropriately transfomred into a disorienting, hallucinatory haze. For a dub hero, Perry doesn't go in for many traditional rhythm section breakdowns on this outing, instead preferring to bring elements in and out in a subtly quirky manner that keeps the listener guessing where the source material stops and the dub begins. Those who long for the heyday of the Upsetters won't be comforted much by JAMAICAN E.T.; this is strictly the new stuff. But did you ever imagine Perry would let time stand still around him? PEEL SLOWLY AND SEE includes complete and digitally remastered versions of all four of the band's studio albums, 25 previously unreleased tracks and an 88-page booklet. Velvet Underground: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); John Cale (vocals, acoustic & electric violas, sarinda, piano, organ, celeste, bass); Doug Yule (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, bass); Sterling Morrison (vocals, guitar, bass); Maureen "Moe" Tucker (vocals, percussion); Billy Yule (drums). Additional personnel: Nico (vocals). Producers: Andy Warhol, Tom Wilson, The Velvet Underground, Geoffrey Haslam, Shel Kagen Compilation Producer: Bill Levenson. Engineers include: Omi Haden, Norman Dolph, John Licata. Recorded between July 1965 and August 23, 1970. Includes liner notes by David Fricke. Released some thirty years after the band first emerged from the streets of New York City, PEEL SLOWLY AND SEE is the definitive documentary of the Velvet Underground, undeniably one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. Its five discs weave in and out of studio material, live nuggets and some unreleased songs that place the band's innovations and evolution within a career-long context, and are sure to make even the surliest VU completist smile. Perhaps what is most surprising about PEEL SLOWLY is the earliest, pre-Maureen Tucker material. For the multiple demos of "Venus InFurs," John Cale sings over a sparse acoustic guitar, but his delicate pronunciation and Reed's coarse phrasing are less noticeable than Tucker's conspicious absence. Without her deliberate pounding VU was a thoroughly different band. Also of interest is the insight we get into Reed's studio demeanor. Through a number of excrutiating demo takes of "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams," Reed's impatience and domineering attitude become obvious--it was his show from the beginning. By the second disc, the band we know and love begins to take on a familiar shape. Tucker's human metronome qualities ricochet off Cale's grating electric viola sounds, and the band sounds super-charged, ready to take on the world. Whereas on the demos Reed's sing-song qualities came across as a New York-y Bob Dylan (complete with harmonica), by the time of the first album Reed is all menace, with no acoustic guitar or harmonica to serve as a buffer. The chugging rhythms spurt out like strangled blues, and on moments like "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "Venus In Furs," the remastered sound quality is unreal--it's as if one has never heard these songs before. Also of interest to Velvet Underground fanatics are the unabridged versions of the LOADED sessions. Songs like "Sweet Jane" are extended to their true length (some thirty seconds were lobbed off in the final mix), making Reed and Morrison's guitar phrasing that much more eloquent. SKU: 1002577

Broke [ECD] [PA]
Hed P.E.: Jahred (vocals, guitar); Chad (guitar, turntables); Mawk (bass); B.C. (drums). Additional personnel: Kerry Freeman, Trista Redavid, Bobby Ikeda, Matthew Pact, Kristy Herndon (background vocals); Serj Tankian, Morgan Lander, East Bay Ray. Recorded at Sweet Tea, Oxford, Mississippi; The Machine Shop, Hoboken, New Jersey; The Hit Factory, New York, New York. These entrants into the rap-metal sweepstakes don't miss a trick. The vocals expertly blend Anthony Kiedis-meets-Ice-T rapping with Alice In Chains-on steroids rock howling. The music displays a similarly accomplished blending of elements, deftly utilizing blazing metal riffs, hip-hop rhythms, and touches of electronica and industrial rock. It all works in the service of a tightly-wound, claustrophobic sonic environment that communicates the angst of the average, alienated individual in the modern world. Although at times it's hard to tell whether BROKE is meant to be music to accompany the impending apocalypse or to express the state of mind intrinsic to a post-apocalyptic world, in either case, it'shard-hitting, unsettling stuff. Fans of Korn, Limp Bizkit, et al will certainly find a lot to like here. SKU: 1041332

It Ain't Safe No More [PA]
Contains the hidden track "Make It Clap" which occurs after "Till It's Gone." Personnel includes: Busta Rhymes (rap vocals); Meka, Spliff Star, Mariah Carey, Flipmode Squad, Rah Digga, Carl Thomas, Sean Paul. Producers include: Dilla, Megahertz, The Neptunes, DJ Scratch, Rick Rock. "We about to take everybody from every street and throw a party in the Grand Canyon," proclaimeth Busta Rhymes in the intro to infectious club anthem "Make It Clap." That statement succinctly captures the spirit of the former Native Tongues member-turned-hip-hop mega-star, and of IT AIN'T SAFE NO MORE, a down and dirty house party intimately drenched in urban chaos and held in an overwhelmingly massive setting. Busta, with his unmistakable gravel tones and class-clown demeanor, has managed the remarkable feat of filling the dance floors while maintaining credibility in the underground. As heslides into his 30s, Busta retains the youthful swagger and grandiloquent, unrestrained silliness that made him a superstar. While he's certainly best known for his bombastic dance tracks, he could always rhyme with the best MCs, as evidenced here on "What Do You Do When You're Branded" and the title track, the latter of which features a lushly layered quasi-circus backbeat. Mariah Carey herself drops by to coo on the sultry "I Know What You Want." Then, of course, there are the trademark kick-down-the-tables killers like the aforementioned "Make it Clap" and the Rah Digga/Swizz Beatz collaboration "Together." SKU: 1077807

More Than A Woman
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Personnel includes: Toni Braxton (vocals); Pharrell Williams (vocals, various instruments); Loon, The Big Tymers, Baby, Manny Fresh (rap vocals); Stokely (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Blake English, Tomi Martin (guitar); Keri Lewis (keyboards, programming); Ricky Kinchen (bass); Chris Dave (drums); Tamar Braxton (background vocals). Producers include: The Neptunes, Chink Santana, Irv Gotti, Rodney Jenkins, Keri. Those who might have pegged quintessential R&B balladeer Toni Braxton as a monochromatic artist in the past will be taken up short by the variety ofsonic colors on offer throughout MORE THAN A WOMAN. The moody, mid-tempo "Give it Back" boasts a bit of hip-hop flavor by virtue of a contribution from the Big Tymers. Loon lends a rap to "Hit the Freeway" as well, but the tune is set apart by its strikingly funky, urgent production. "Me and My Boyfriend" boasts some Spanish guitar amid its slinky grooves. All this eclecticism aside, it's obviously the ballad form in which Braxton excels, and she certainly gets a chance to strut her stuff here in that regard. However, even on these cuts, the production--incorporating everything from odd, strident electronic effects to distorted rock guitar--is so consistently inventive that there's no possibility of coming off with anything like a generic tune. Choba B CCCP
Originally released exclusively in the U.S.S.R. on vinyl in 1988 by the Melodiya label. Personnel: Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, bass); Nick Garvey (vocals, bass); Mick Green (guitar); Mick Gallagher (piano, keyboards); Chris Whitten (bass); Henry Spinetti (drums). Recorded in June & July 1987. Includes liner notes by Roy Carr. Recorded in 1987 for exclusive release in the USSR, this was rock& roll diplomat McCartney's attempt at international relations. Regardless of the non-musical circumstances surrounding it, this recording is a powerful document of McCartney's life-long love affair with '50s rock & roll. Each tune here is a gem from rock's golden age, material of the kind that inspired a young Lennon & McCartney to begin their life's work. Despite being labeled "the fluffy Beatle" by Lennon-centric detractors, McCartney always had a gift for interpreting R&B-based tunes, particularly those of Little Richard, and his emotive, soulful voice sound right at home on spirited versions of Fats Domino's "I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Someday" and "Ain't That a Shame." Even non-rock diversions like the Gershwin classic "Summertime" are full of grit and passion. SKU: 1042030

Fickle Sonance,A [Remastered]
Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Tommy Turrentine (trumpet); Sonny Clark (piano); Butch Warren (bass); Billy Higgins (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on October 26, 1961. Originally released on Blue Note (84089). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler and Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (2000, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey). This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. All of Jackie McLean's early-'60s Blue Note sessions are worth one's time, but this date features a particularly sparkling ensemble including the under-recorded trumpeter Tommy Turrentine and the rhythm team of Sonny Clark, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins. Add a set of finely crafted original compositions and it's hard to imagine why this disc waited till 2000 to make it to CD. McLean's trademark alto wail is in classic form here, and Turrentine proves as virile a partner as Donald Byrd had on many other exemplary dates withthe saxophonist. Sonny Clark, who provides the swinging compositions "Five Will Get You Ten" and "Sundu," is, likewise, at the top of his game here. Warren, an excellent bassist in the tradition of the great Oscar Pettiford, provides ample rhythmic variety and penned the rollicking closer "Lost." Higgins, a Blue Note regular by this time, is at his swinging best, supporting the whole group with his shimmering cymbals. SKU: 1045653

NORE [PA]
Personnel includes: Noreaga, Nature, Big Punisher, Cam'Ron, Styles, Jadakiss, Maze, Musolini, Kool G. Rap, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Spliff Star, Maze, Kid Capri (rap vocals); Carl Thomas, Chico DeBarge (vocals); Avon Marshall, Robert Mays (various instruments); Portia (guitar); Vinia Mojica, Tammy Lucas, The Neptunes (background vocals). Producers include: Swizz, EZ Elpee, Poke & Tone, SPK, Marley Marl. Engineers include: Martin Moor, Pat Viola, Chris Conway. As one half of the critically acclaimed group Capone-N-Noreaga, Noreaga established himself as a true rap artist, lyrically talented and musically diverse. Within one year, he created a heavy demand for his vocal talents, which are incredibly distinct. His thuggish style brings a street flavor back to hip-hop, and with his solo debut N.O.R.E., Noreaga schools listeners on what rap music is meant to be. The album N.O.R.E. is all about street credibility, lyrics that play with your head and beats that invoke serious head-nodding. "Banned From TV" is a posse cut that features only the hottest MCs, such as Cam'Ron, Big Punisher and The Lox. "I Love My Life" and "The Way We Live" showNoreaga's crossover potential, while production for tracks like "The Assignment" and "Superthug" make N.O.R.E. much more worthy of praise than the average debut.
