I Am Nas (The Autobiography Vol.1)
Personnel includes: Nas, Puff Daddy, Aaliyah, Scarface, DMX. Producers include: DJ Premier, Pretty Boy, Nashiem Myrick, L.E.S., Grease. Engineers include: Eddie Sancho, Kevin Crouse, Steve Souder. I AM was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The original street poet is back. The third chapter in Nas' book of scriptures comes at a time when hip-hop starves for what made the rapper famous: intelligent, realistic songs with a hardcore street edge. I AM combines the underground feel of ILLMATIC with the commercial appeal of IT WAS WRITTEN. Fortunately for Nas, the production matches up to his superior lyrical skills, making for yet another hip-hop classic. Nas keeps the guest appearances to a memorable minimum (DMX, Scarface, etc.) allowing listeners to focus on his own unmatchable talent. And with producers like the critically acclaimed DJ Premier providing the background for the above average "Nas Is Like" and hitmaker Puff Daddy working the boards forthe hype-igniting "Hate Me Now," Nas proves that his contribution to hip-hop far surpasses that of many MCs. Belly Of The Sun
Personnel: Cassandra Wilson (vocals, guitar, sardo); Kevin Breit (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, National steel guitar, slide resonator guitar, E-bow guitar, 12-string banjo, bizouki, mandolin, ominichord); Richard Johnson (vocals, guitar); Cyro Baptista (vocals, bass drum, percussion); India.Arie, Rhonda Richmond, Patrice Moncell, Jewell Bass, Henry Rhodes, Vasti Jackson (vocals); Olu Dara (trumpet); Boogaloo Ames (piano); Marvin Sewell (acoustic & electric guitars); Mark Peterson (acoustic & electric basses); Xavyon Jamison (drums); Jeffrey Haynes (steel pans, plastic tub, percussion); Children Of M.S. 44. Recorded in Clarksdale, Mississippiand at Allaire Studios South, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Michael Simanga. BELLY OF THE SUN may be seen as the end of a trilogy wherein Cassandra Wilson redefines boomer rock/pop repertoire from a contemporary jazz singer's perspective. From its intro of sultry jazz bass and syncopated percussion, you'd never guess you were about to hear a version of the Band's '60s country-rock classic "The Weight." Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman," best known as a Glen Campbell country-pop hit, gets a relaxed, sensual interpretation here that helps make the case for Webb's acceptance into the canon of Great American Songbook composers. A delicate, jazzy cover of Dylan's "Shelter from the Storm" sounds more like mid-'70s Joni than Zimmy. There's a lot of Wilson's native Mississippi to be felt in BELLY OF THE SUN; as on the spare, slide-guitar-driven take on Mississippi Fred McDowell's country blues tune "You Gotta Move," or Robert Johnson's "Hot Tamales." And just when you least expect it, Wilson briefly turns into a traditional jazz singer to croon "Darkness on the Delta" over a romping, bluesy piano accompaniment. Never one to get stuck in a rut, Wilson throws in a bit of Braziliana with Jobim's classic "Waters of March," whose poetically dadaist lyrics suit the singer's mercurial spirit perfectly, capturing the free spirit at the heart of Wilson's work. Manifesto
Roxy Music: Bryan Ferry (vocals, keyboards); Phil Manzanera (guitar); Andy Mackay (oboe, saxophone); Paul Thompson (drums); Alan Spencer, Gary Tibbs, Paul Garrack. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. MANIFESTO was Roxy Music's 1979 return after a hiatus of several years. This second phase of the band continued in the direction begun with their 1975 album SIREN. Lush romanticism now enveloped their sound, softening the barbs and burrs that had been a characteristic since their art school beginnings with Brian Eno at the start of the decade. MANIFESTO yielded several hits and songs of enduring popularity in theBryan Ferry songbook, notably "Angel Eyes" and "Dance Away." The latter, in fact, sounds of a piece with Ferry's eighties solo work--gorgeous, lush, and exceedingly romantic. This album and its two successors (FLESH & BLOOD and AVALON) effectively form a bridge from the glam-rock of the early '70s to the more sedate, but rich and confident, sounds of pop music for adults. Keep It Unreal
Andrew Carthy is one of the zanier beatsmiths. He's an obsessive collector of audio esoterica and a cartoonist with a charmingly childlike line in scribble. As Mr. Scruff, he combines both sensibilities to people his musical world. KEEP IT UNREAL is so overstuffed with quirky beats and pieces that "Keep It Surreal" might have been more appropriate. Like labelmates Amon Tobin and Coldcut, Mr. Scruff plunders his vast record collection for funk, soul, exotica, and jazz samples with kleptomaniac glee. Mr. Scruff comes up with some wild combinations on his excellent debut album. "Spandex Man" jumbles Canterbury keys and swamp boogie guitar. Rhumba organs and sharp programming mix it up on "Blackpool Roll." "Get a Move On" choreographs '20s swing toa '90s house beat. Carthy's familiar sea-life fixation surfaces on "Shanty Town" and "Fish," irresistible Plunderphonic skanks with narrative affectations. Beyond his unfaltering sense of humor, KEEP IT UNREAL reveals Carthy's impressive range and a well-tuned ear for arrangements. Crashing breaks buoy the easy-listening vibes of "Chipmunk." On the luscious "Honeydew," Fi's pop-soul vocals are cushioned in wah-wah and strings but chastened by crisp, cold hip-hop rhythms. The spare, dubby "Jusjus" provides an attractive backdrop for Roots Manuva's toast-like rap. SKU: 1037060

Gateway Vol.1
Full performer name: John Abercrombie/Dave Holland/Jack DeJohnette. Personnel: John Abercrombie (guitar); Dave Holland (bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums). Recorded at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany in March 1975. On GATEWAY, their first recording together, this trio of innovators did more than just cement the image of a group sound that would endure some twenty years hence. In the first days of Manfred Eicher's label, they helped define some of the parameters of what would become one of ECM's signature guitar sounds. On "May Dance," a simple modal theme soon gives way to expressive, telepathic free improvisations, as DeJohnette's crystalline cymbal textures shade in and around the beat--playing in and out of time; meanwhile, Holland's muscular lines anticipate and support each complex rhythmic variation. Abercrombie extends on their tumultuous dialogue with a canny array of textures, harmonic contrasts and polytonal melodic lines. On "Unshielded Desire" the drummer engages Abercrombie in a furious dialogue, while on DeJohnette's "Sorcery 1" the trio moves from roiling waves of sound to a fat, rocking vamp worthy of Jimi Hendrix's Experience. Red Mantra
Salamander: Erik Wivinus (vocals); Bryce Kastning (keyboards, drums, sound effects). RED MANTRA continues the Camera Obscura label's loving retrospective documentation of Salamander, a Minneapolis-based psychedelic improv unit formed in 1992 by guitarists Sean Connaughty and Erik Wivinus. For a long time, Wivinus's archive of four-track recordings was Salamander's lone legacy. RED MANTRA picks up where RED AMPERSAND left off, resuming the tale of the on-again/off-again Salamander with material from the band's prime1994-1996 period and from the reconvened, 1998-model crew. Throughout RED MANTRA, one detects the dulcet acid-folk echoes of Connaughty's Vortex Navigation Company and Wivinus' Gentle Tasaday, side projects that occupied the band's principals during Salamander's indefinite hiatus. RED MANTRA's journey begins with a slightlyforlorn, Connaughty-penned acoustic ballad ("Earthborn Animal"), but Salamander soon kicks into interstellar overdrive with the twin psychedelic cyclones of "David's Opening" and the newer "Old Mister Jones." "Return to Rural Highway" unfolds with blissful leisure until scalding distortion and devastating effects threaten the instrumental's serpentine sylvan path. The highlight, however, is "Red Mantra" itself, wherein the reformed Salamander charts a stunning 25-minute trip into the forbidding, sun-baked heart of a sinister and surreal Agitation Free-like desert dreamscape. Play Me Backwards
Personnel: Joan Baez (vocals); Kenny Greenberg, Richard Bennett, Jerry Douglas (guitar); Carl Gorodetzky, Pam Sixfin (violin); Kristin Wilkinson (viola); Bob Mason (cello); Wally Wilson, Mike Lawler, Steve Nathan (keyboards); Glen Worf, Edgar Meyer, Willie Weeks (bass); James Stroud, Chad Cromwell (drums); Tom Roady, Marcos Suzano (percussion); Greg Barnhill, Ashley Cleveland, Jonell Mosser, Chris Rodriguez, Cyndi Richardson, Vicki Hampton (background vocals). Engineers: James A. Ball, Peter Coleman, Greg Parker. Recorded at Treasure Isle Recorder, Woodland Sound, OMNI Sound, and The Reflections, Nashville, Tennessee. This 1994 release finds the iconic folk singer in a pop/rock setting. Song such as "Stones in the Road," "I'm With You," and "Edge of Glory" have strong backbeats and electric guitars; "Through Your Hands" even features synthesizers. Conversely, songs such as "Isaac and Abraham" and "Steal Across the Border" hark back to a largely acoustic, folk sound. On PLAY ME BACKWARDS, Baez's songs are less concerned with political issues of the day, focusing more on personal expression and inner struggle. For instance, on "The Dream Song" she sings, "Ihad a dream, I was following a barefoot girl...and I thought I woke and my mother was standing there...And my heart broke..." Baez is backed here by a smartly arranged string quintet, a change of pace for the guitar-based singer. A creative and deeply poetic album, PLAY ME BACKWARDS is one of Joan Baez's most compelling later releases. SKU: 1004341

Mixed Emotional Features
Mocean Worker: Adam Dorn. The sophomore effort by sampler sadist Adam Dorn finds the mad programmer continuing his love affair with all things synthetic 'n' cinematic. He's moved beyond the drum 'n' bass motifs that informed HOME MOVIES FROM THE BRAINFOREST to embrace the thumping sequencers of his electronica brethren (Ultralights, Odd Toot, and Kosma) as well as his love for jazz samples. "Rene M" uses diverting shuffle-beats to tell a story of lovesick synth burbles and tribalism, while the in-your-face angst of "Detonator" sticks British-influenced drill 'n' bass right between the eyes. Dorn avoids all sense of categorical style, concentrating his gestures towards painting a wider sonic palette. MIXED EMOTIONAL FEATURES managesto offer a multitude of surprise moves with each successive listen. SKU: 1006322

Desireless
Personnel: Eagle-Eye Cherry (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, keyboards, samples); Alisha Zebulon, Titiyo Jah (vocals); Jaya Deva (vocals, acoustic, electric & Gnawan guitars); Mattias Torell (acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Kent Gillstrom (acoustic & electricguitars, programming); Lars Halapi, Klas Ahlund (acoustic & electric guitars); Adam Kviman (acoustic guitar, Fender Rhodes); Ingemar Woody, Andreas Fjallstrom (electric guitar); Sebastian Oberg (cello); Goran Kajfes (trumpet); Niklas Medin (Hammond B-3 organ); Peter Forss (bass, background vocals); Elias Modig (bass); Magnus Persson (drums, sleigh bells, didgeridoo, programming); Bengt Berger (tablas); Dominic Keyes (percussion, background vocals); Magnus Frykberg (programming); Vinia Mojica, Sharon Dyall, Dilba Demirbag (background vocals). Producers: Adam Kviman, Klas Ahlund, Kent Gillstrom, Magnus Frykberg, Eagle-Eye Cherry. Engineers include: Kent Gillstrom, Ed Tuton, Robert Wellerfors. "Save Tonight" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. The late, great jazz trumpeter Don Cherry lives on not only through his amazing legacy of recordings, but through his talented progeny. Several years after Cherry's daughter Neneh was propelled into the public eye, her brother Eagle-Eye makes his recorded debut with DESIRELESS. Eagle-Eye's music is miles away from both his sister's neo-R&B and his father's jazz. Rather, DESIRELESS is full of stripped down alterna-pop (whatever that means). Slightly R&B-inflected, occasionally reminiscent of Ben Harper, the tunes on DESIRELESS are gentle, acoustic-based, modern folk-pop, rootsy but thoroughly modern. Eagle-Eye's relaxed, confident delivery and inward-looking (but never navel-gazing) lyrics make his first release go down easy. SKU: 1011438

Man From Utopia, The
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, drum programming); Ray White (vocals, guitar); Bobby Martin (vocals, saxophone, keyboards); Roy Estrada, Bob Harris, Ike Willis (vocals); Arthur "Tink" Barrow (guitar, keyboards, bass); Steve Vai (guitar); Dick Fegy (mandolin); Craig "Twister" Steward (harmonica); Marty Krystall (saxophone); Tommy Mars (keyboards); Scott Thunes (bass); Chad Wackerman, Vinnie Colaiuta (drums);Ed Mann (percussion). Engineers: Bob Stone, Mark Pinske, Dave Jerdan. By the '80s, Frank Zappa became known as a genius who hid a social conscience behind a biting sense of humor. No matter how crude the lyrics were, he was always making a point. Occasionally, however, he did like to just make a silly record, and THE MAN FROM UTOPIA is mighty silly. On "The Radio Is Broken," he roasts those really bad sci-fi movies that inhabit late night TV. "The Jazz Discharge Party Hats" tells what we can only hope is a fictional groupie story over free-jazz backing. Zappa could even write a funny instrumental, picking a baritone sax to handle the melody on "We Are Not Alone." UTOPIA also features an up-and-coming Steve Vai who had the unenviable task of transcribing and then doubling Zappa's vocal part on "The Dangerous Kitchen" and "The Jazz Discharge Party Hats." Rite Of Spring [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Hubert Laws (flute); Walter Kane, Jane Taylor, Wally Kane (bassoon); Ron Carter (cello, bass); David Friedman (vibraphone, percussion); Bob James (piano, electric piano, harpsichord); Gene Bertoncini, Stuart Scharf (guitar); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Airto Moreira (percussion). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Jerry Rappaport. Recorded in June 1971. Originally released on CTI Records. Includes liner notes by James Isaacs. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Jazz and classical music had certainly mingled before, perhaps most notably in the work of the Modern Jazz Quartet, but seldom with as much sense of purpose as on this 1971 Hubert Laws outing. While the flautist had previously shown himself to be of an eclectic bent, working in pop and R&B as well as jazz, an album like RITE OF SPRING was anunprecedented move for him. In tackling the works of Faure, Stravinksy, Debussy, and Bach, he secured the distinctive arrangement chops of Don Sebesky, who in turn harnessed a number of fine players. Together they worked out third-stream arrangements (at a time when that was still a new idea) of the title piece, "Pavane," and others with an ear towards a new paradigm. This isn't some cheesy swing-meets-strings deal, it's an earnest (and successful) effort to break new ground. You still might have to pinch yourself when you realize you're hearing Bob James playing Bach harpsichord. SKU: 1070140

Dreadlocks Dread
Includes liner notes by Trevor Herman. This is part of Caroline's Front Line series. This is the perfect Big Youth pop album: gone is the thundering sparse bass and in its place is a more orchestrated effort with shades of Marley and Burning Spear. 'Lightning Flash (Weak Heart Drop)' is sensational, while the happy-go-lucky 'Some Like It Dread' should have been a national hit. Only the power of his Screaming Target can top this album. His recorded outputin recent years is meagre but this and Screaming Target should keep Youth's name alive long after any reggae boom has faded. He was after all the big name of 1973 (in Jamaica). Rubber Soul
The Beatles: George Harrison (vocals, guitar, sitar); John Lennon (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); Ringo Starr (vocals, organ, drums). Additional personnel: George Martin (piano); Mal Evans (organ). Though some might argue that the Beatles' unprecedented evolution from British Invasion pin-ups to pop music visionaries began with BEATLES FOR SALE, RUBBER SOUL is without a doubt the first album to definitively put the Fab Four in the running for Greatest Band Ever. Virtually every aspect of the Liverpool quartet's incredibly diverse sound is in evidence here: the dark, irony-filled Dylanism ("Norwegian Wood," "Nowhere Man"), pop perfection ("In My Life"), the passion for classic tin pan alley balladry ("Girl," "Michelle"), and the love of good 'ol rock & roll music ("Drive My Car").Peppered with nasty fuzz bass, exotic sitar, cartoonishly sped-up piano that sounds like harpsichord, and elements of country, Motown, and classical music, the album reveals a creative scope and willingness to experiment so revolutionary it can now only be termed "Beatlesque." Though the Fabs don't go as far out on a limb here as on the more overtly experimental REVOLVER, RUBBER SOUL is perhaps the Beatles' most finely crafted and accessible work, and consequently many fans' and critics' favorite. London Calling [Remastered]
Also available in a 3-pack with THE CLASH and COMBAT ROCK. The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (vocals, bass); Topper Headon (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Baker Glare (whistling); The Irish Horns (brass); Micky Gallagher (organ). Digitally remastered by Ray Staff & Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios, London, England). If punk rejected pop history, LONDON CALLING reclaimed it, albeit with a knowing perspective. The scope of this double set is breaktaking, encompassing reggae, rockabilly and the group's own furious mettle. Where such a combination might have proved over-ambitious, the Clash accomplish it with swaggering panache.Guy Stevens, who produced the group's first demos, returns to the helm to provide a confident, cohesive sound equal to the set's brilliant array of material. Boldly assertive and superbly focused, London Calling contains many of the quartet's finest songs and is, by extension, virtually faultless. SKU: 1069442

Vocalcity
Luomo: Vladislav Delay. Finnish producer Vladislav Delay has been a force in the Scandinavian experimental techno scene since his mid '90s incarnation as Conoco. This first album under the moniker Luomo finds Delay merging his early clicks-and-blips sound from releases on Mille Plateux and Max.Ernst with influences from experimental Chicago house stylists like Theo Parrish and ambient techno innovators such as Richie Hawtin. VOCALCITY contains only six tracks that clock in at nearly 77 minutes in length. Delay takes these compositions through gradual changes as subtle yet powerful as those of a sun setting over a city skyline. He sets a mood by teasing structure out of meticulously placed beats that appear to be random, like blocks in a game of Tetris falling upon one another in a mosaic-like pattern. In "Class," vocals punctuate polyrhythms that can be as ethereal as Tangerine Dream or as aggressive as Plastikman. "Tessio," the album's best track, builds over an agonizing 12 minutes fullof sound effects, ambient noise, and nearly empty space. The vocals, a distinctly urban duet between a man and woman discussing their affair, are hushed and suggestive, a bizarre parody and a triumph of modern R&B. SKU: 1046514

Argus [Remastered]
ARGUS: EXPANDED EDITION contains bonus tracks from LIVE IN MEMPHIS, a 1972 promotional EP. Wishbone Ash includes: Ted Turner, Andy Powell (gutiar); Martin Turner (bass); Steve Upton (drums, percussion). Producer: Derek Lawrence. Reissue producers: Andy McKaie, Leon Tsilis. Includes liner notes by Leon Tsilis. Digitally remastered by Erik Kvortek. On its third album, Wishbone Ash doesn't mess with its formula--as before, this long running British rock institution purveys a mix of blues, folk, and Yes- style riffs mated to endearingly cosmic lyrics. The songs here, however, are considerably more focused and well crafted than on the band's previous efforts, and the harmony singing is delightful. As always, the band's basis is the tag team guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner. Fans of this duo's mix of Yardbirds-and Allman Brothers- style harmony licks and dueling solos will find much to admire here, particularly "The King Will Come" and "Time Was," a folk-ish epic in several contrasting sections. All in all, ARGUS is one of the best guitar albums of the early '70s. SKU: 1070914
