No Reason To Cry
Personnel includes: Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Ron Wood, Robbie Robertson, RickDanko, Georgie Fame, Richard Manuel, Marcy Levy, Jesse Ed Davis, Yvonne Elliman, Carl Radle, Wah Wah Watson. Engineers: Ralph Moss, Ed Anderson, Nat Jeffrey. All tracks have been digitally remastered. In the spirit of all-star get-togethers endemic to that part of the '70s, 1976's NO REASON TO CRY became Eric Clapton's recorded version of the Rolling Thunder Tour. Joining Clapton in the studio were Bob Dylan, Ron Wood, Georgie Fame and Band-mates Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko & Richard Manuel (Clapton returned the favor later in the year by appearing in The Last Waltz, the Band's last live show). Clapton's buddies also contributed material, including Dylan's "Sign Language," the Danko/Manuel composition "Beautiful Thing" and Danko's country-flavored "All Our Past Times." At this point in his solo career, Clapton was taking a more languid and low-key approach towards playing, with more emphasis on presenting songs and less on soloing. Songs such as the wistful "Hello Old Friend" and the aching "Innocent Times," featuring Marcy Levy's gospel-flavored vocals, reflect Slowhand's countryish leanings of the time. Clapton's love of the blues, however, was undiminished, and when he tackles both Otis Rush's "Double Trouble" and Little Walter's "Last Night," he shines despite any stylistic changes. SKU: 1019604

Koln Concert, The (24 January 1975)
Solo performer: Keith Jarrett (piano). Recordedlive in Koln, Germany on January 24, 1975. Albums that sell vast quantities are not always to be recommended. This exceptional example of solo piano is the biggest selling record in the 25 year history of the pioneering jazz label ECM. It is an almost perfect recording of the art of piano dynamics, full of emotion, and throughout the hour or so duration the listener is never bored. Jarrett has repeated his concerts of improvisation hundreds of times, many have been recorded, and presumably, many routes of his spontaneity have led to blind alleys of jazz doodling. This is the best recorded example of the art, unlikely to be bettered. SKU: 1005902

Irish Heartbeat
Van Morrison & The Chieftains: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar, drums); Kevin Conneff (vocals, bodhran); Martin Fay (fiddle, bones); Sean Keane (fiddle); Derek Bell (harp, tiompan, keyboards); Matt Molloy (flute); Paddy Moloney (Uilleann pipes, tin whistles). Additional personnel: Ciaran O'Braonain (bass); Mary Black, Maura O'Connell, June Boyce (background vocals). Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland in September and December 1987 and January 1988. All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original master tapes. It was inevitable that Ireland's finest singer and its most celebrated traditional folk ensemble would eventually collaborate. We have both talent and providence to thank for the fact that their collaboration, IRISH HEARTBEAT, works as well as it does. The Celtic folk influence had always been lurking just below the surface in Morrison's music, occasionally peeking out, as on INTO THE MUSIC. His evocative, emotional style is a perfect fit with the timelesssound of the Chieftains. Things get off to a rollicking start on the randy "Star Of The County Down" before moving into more introspective areas. The beautiful ballad "Raglan Road" explores Celtic myths while examining the nature of art and inspiration. The well-known tune "She Moved Through The Fair" is given a haunting reading here, as Morrison fully exploits the ghostly aspects of the tale. Morrison sounds perfectly at home on the traditional tunes that are the Chieftains stock in trade, and they back him with equal aplomb on the tile track, a paean to home and family that is the album's sole original tune. Money Jungle
Full performer name: Duke Ellington/Max Roach/Charles Mingus. Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Charles Mingus (bass); Max Roach (drums). Recorded at Sound Makers, New York, New York on September 17, 1962. Originally released on United Artists (15017). Includes liner notes by George Wein and Michael Cuscuna. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Although this excellent album is listed as a Duke Ellington, equal billing shouldbe given to the participation of Charles Mingus and Max Roach. The remastered CD is outstanding, having been cleaned up from the original master tape. The CD also has the addition of six extra tracks, including four unheard Ellington originals: "Very Special," "Rem Blues," "Switch Blade," and "Backward Country Boy Blues." He is as at home in the setting of a trio as he is with a wailing big-band, and as usual, he allows the other musicians to play. The trio version of "Caravan" is exceptional, raucous and swinging. Shoot Out The Lights
Personnel: Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar, accordion, dulcimer); Linda Thompson (vocals); Simon Nicol (guitar); Stephen Corbett, Brian Jones (cornet); Stephen Barnett, Mark Cutts (trombone); Phil Goodwin (tuba); Dave Pegg (bass); Pete Zorn (bass, background vocals);David Mattacks (drums); Clive Gregson (background vocals). Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England. The CD version of SHOOT OUT THE LIGHTS contains one song ("Living In Luxury") not included on the original LP release. The world's most underrated songwriter, although Thompson must tire of hearing it so often. Together with his ex-wife Linda they made a series of quite brilliant albums that garnered heaps of praise and minimal sales. This is another slice of perfection that veers from whimsical fun in 'Wall Of Death' to desperate emotions in 'Shoot Out the Lights', which features the definitive Thompson guitar solo. Critics have often been accused of hyping artists, but try as they may, they can't do it with this one. Time will tell but this album should be in many more homes. SKU: 4123858

30
Personnel: Harry Connick, Jr. (vocals, piano); Rev. James Moore (vocals, organ); Wynton Marsalis (trumpet, piano); Ben Wolfe (bass). Recorded at Sony Music Studios, New York, New York in September 4-8, 1998. British filmmaker Michael Apted's most acclaimed work is the series of Seven Up documentaries which trace the life arc of a group of children that the director checks back with every seventh year. Harry Connick, Jr. has followed a similar route, putting out 11, 20, 25, and in 2001, 30 as a way of documenting his abilities at different ages. In keepingwith the format of its predecessors, 30 is a stripped-down affair focusing on Connick's subtle piano-playing and the occasional rich vocal display. Connick packs the program with a raft of songs inspired by his hometown. "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans" gets a sprightly reading, Hoagy Carmichael's "New Orleans" becomes a subtle dirge and "Junco Partner" is packed with interesting time changes before shifting into mid-tempo mode. Elsewhere, the Louisiana native whips out a bouncy version of Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'" and an off-the-wall arrangement of "Chattanooga Choo Choo" that renders the song nearly unrecognizable. Connick collaborates with gospel legend Rev. James Moore on a sanctified "There Is Always One More Time." and with fellow young lion Wynton Marsalis, who contributes trumpet to the melancholy "I'll Only Miss Her (When I Think Of Her)." So [SACD]
Personnel includes: Peter Gabriel (vocals, keyboards); Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, Youssou N'Dour (vocals); David Rhodes (guitar, background vocals); Daniel Lanois (guitar, tambourine); Nile Rodgers (guitar); L. Shankar (violin); Mark Rivera (alto, tenor & baritone saxophones); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Don Mikelsen (trombone); Richard Tee (piano); Simon Clark (Hammond B3 organ, synthesizer, bass); Tony Levin (bass, Chapman stick); Larry Klein, Bill Laswell (bass); Manu Katche (drums, talking drums); Jerry Marotta, Stewart Copeland (drums); Chris Hughes (programming); Djalma Correa (surdu, congas, triangle); JimmKerr (background vocals). Engineers: Kevin Killen, Daniel Lanois, David Bottrill. Recorded at Ascombe Studios, Bath, England between Feruary & December 1985. SO consolidated Gabriel's reputation as an original and exciting composer, capable of projecting sophisticated lyrics on accessible melodies. 'Sledgehammer' was a massive hit (number one in the USA), as was 'Don't Give Up', with Kate Bush's vocals adding extra pathos. 'This Is The Picture' clearly shows the slightly surreal influence of co-writer Laurie Anderson, and the whole is given flight by Daniel Lanois' impeccable production. The towering achievement, however, is 'Mercy Street', a sparely orchestrated and perfectly constructed tribute to the late poet Anne Sexton. SKU: 1082961

Here Come The Noise Makers (Live 1998-2000)
Personnel: Bruce Hornsby (vocals, accordion, piano); Doug Derryberry (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Bobby Read (vocals, bass clarinet, saxophone); John "J.T." Thomas (vocals, organ, keyboards); Michael Baker (vocals, drums); Debbie Henry (vocals); Steve Kimock (guitar); John D'Earth (trumpet); J.V. Collier (bass); Bonny Bonaparte, Land Richards (drums). Recorded live between 1988 & 2000. Includes liner notes by Bruce Hornsby. Ever since 1986, when Bruce Hornsby won his first Grammy for Best New Artist, he's maintained a successful solo career, hop-scotched between recording and touring, and become a temporary member of the Grateful Dead. He's also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Branford Marsalis, Bonnie Raitt, and Don Henley. Fourteen years into his career, Hornsby released this 2-CD live set as a gift to fans who'd asked for an in-concert document of this immensely gifted pianist's diverse talents. Over the span of 18 songs, Hornsby and his band stretch and twist through well-known hits like "Mandolin Rain," "The Way it Is" and "The End of the Innocence" along with covers by some of Hornsby's favorite artists. Among the composers the lanky Virginian pays tribute to are Bob Dylan ("It Takes a Lot to Laugh, it Takes a Train to Cry"), George Gershwin ("I Loves You Porgy"), Samuel Barber ("Nocturne"), Bill Evans ("Twelve Tone Tune"), and Bud Powell ("Tempus Fugit"). Hornsby even works in a pair of Dead tunes ("Lady With a Fan," "Black MuddyRiver") amidst eclectic improvisation that finds him putting a bluegrass spin on his "Jacob's Ladder" before segueing into the high-lonesome standard "Blackberry Blossom." Whiskey Tango Ghosts
Personnel: Tanya Donelly (vocals, guitar); Dean Fisher (guitar, bass instrument, drums, percussion); Rich Gilbert (pedal steel guitar); Elizabeth Steen (piano, Wurlitzer piano, background vocals). Recording information: Q Division, Somerville, Massachussets. Though Tanya Donelly has been unfairly overlooked for her contributions to both Throwing Muses and the Breeders, the success of her band Belly, and its 1993 debut STAR, finally announced her as a major presence. WHISKEY TANGO GHOSTS, Donelly's third album under her own name, bears no relation to the driving, ethereal rock of her previous bands, but instead finds Donelly firmly in the solo singer/songwriter tradition. Featuring a delicate web of spare, tasteful arrangements, the atmosphere of WHISKEY TANGOGHOSTS rarely rises above a haunted, folky whisper. Donelly's songs--largely down- and mid-tempo ballads--are dark, ephemeral, and remarkably personal, a sense heightened by her associative, confessional lyrics. There is an earnestness to Donelly's tales of love and personal trial that appeals, as on the bittersweet "Divine Sweet Divide," and the gorgeous, aching love song "The Center." Donelly's vocals, reed-like and soaring, yet also about to scrape the bottom of a broken heart, build a bridge between the abstract qualities inherent in her fine songwriting and the intimate feel throughout, making WHISKEY TANGO GHOSTS a beautiful, compelling statement. Fan Dance
Personnel includes: Sam Phillips-Burnett (vocals, guitar); Gillian Welch (vocals); Van Dyke Parks (arranger, harpsichord); T Bone Burnett (guitar, piano, bass); Marc Ribot (guitar, Quatro banjo guitar, banjo); Martin Tillman (cello); Rick Will (bass); Carla Azar (drums). Recorded at Sunset SoundRecorders, Hollywood, California; Village Recorders and Electro Magnetic Sound, West Lost Angeles, California. Accompanied as usual by trusty husband/producer T-Bone Burnett, Sam Phillips continues her streak of intelligent, complex pop albums that are simultaneously intriguing and accessible. In contrast to the rococo tapestries of MARTINIS AND BIKINIS and DON'T WORRY LAMBCHOP, FAN DANCE keeps things decidedly spare. While Phillips employs her trademark melodic gift in the service of songs that betray a strong hint of John Lennon influence, there's a moody, creepy quality to many of the tunes here that lends a strong film noir flavor. David Lynch would likely find many choice items here suitable for his next surreal cinematic effort. Helping to keep it creepy is guitarist extraordinaire Marc Ribot, who provides a great deal of the aforementioned atmosphere. Still, with the arrangements being as scaled down as they are, the songs are front and center, and darkly catchy little gems they are, as strong as anything Phillips has come up with to date. Sense Of Wonder, A [Remastered]
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar, piano); Chris Michie (guitar); Pee Wee Ellis (tenor saxophone); Bob Doll (trumpet); John Allair (organ); David Hayes (bass); Tom Donlinger (drums); Bianca Thornton, Pauline Lazano (background vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original master tapes. On A SENSE OF WONDER, Van Morrison reflects on many of the most vital, persistent themes in his music. There's his deep sense of spirituality and mysticism; a fierce pride in his Celtic heritage ("Boffyflow and Spike"); ambiguity about the steep price he's had to pay for fame and talent ("If You Only Knew")--one of the dominant characteristics of his later work. Utilizing the warm sound of a gospel-tinged female chorus to provide a soulful harmonic lift to his work, Van Morrison mines many of the most familiar and endearing veins of his rich, personal style. But as always, there's a feeling ofdiscovery--A SENSE OF WONDER, as it were--to the singer's work, as Van Morrison stretches himself in new directions, taking the listener along for the ride. Most notably on "Let The Slave," where mystic poet William Blake's "The Price of Experience" is incorporated into a reflection on the struggles of the common man. SKU: 1001036

Electric Honey
Luscious Jackson: Gabrielle Glaser (vocals, guitar, piano, Mellotron, keyboards, bass, drum programming); Jill Cunniff (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); Kate Schellenbach (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Deborah Harry, Emmylou Harris, N'Dea Davenport (vocals); Tony Mangurian (guitar, piano, keyboards, drums, programming, background vocals); Daniel Lanois (slide guitar); Petra Haden (violin); Josephine Wiggs (cello, acoustic bass); Lisa Haney (strings); Robert Aaron (flute, horns); Roger Manning (keyboards); Tia Sprocket (percussion, background vocals); Vincent Louis (percussion); Mickey Petralia, 25 Ton (programming); Alex Young (scratches); G. Wise (talkbox); Kym Hampton, Diane Friedwald, Irene Bremis, Sean Raynor (background vocals). Producers include: Tony Visconti, Jill Cunniff, Gabrielle Glaser, Tony Mangurian, Mickey Petralla. Engineersinclude: Serge Tsai, Tony Mangurian, Jamie Staub. Principally recorded at Greene Street Studios, Secret Studios and Magic Shop Studio, New York, New York. In the six years since 1992's audacious IN SEARCH OF MANNY, Luscious Jackson has produced three records of groovy, hip-hop-infused music with a distinctly New York City flavor. While they have always shown proficiency with a groove, ELECTRIC HONEY sees the group serving up its most consistently winning set of songs as well as stretching out a bit stylistically. "Alien Lover" and "Sexy Hypnotist," for example, have a vignette-like quality that recalls an era when it was cool to walk like an Egyptian. Principal songwriter Jill Cunniff seems to have stumbled upon a huge bag of riffs. When she sings "baby I got heart" on the smoldering "Ladyfingers," you can tell she really means it. With heavenly backup vocals by Emmylou Harris and a churning bassline, this ranks among Luscious Jackson's finest songs yet. Other guest stars include Deborah Harry, whose ultra-cool vocal style sounds right at home over the crunching chords of "Fantastic Fabulous," produced by the legendary Tony Visconti. The opening "Nervous Breakthrough" features a rollicking, party-hearty groove, a nifty horn section, and groovy, nonchalant vocals. Like most of the songs here, it has nothing but fun on its mind.
