You're Living All Over Me [ECD] [Remastered]
Dinosaur Jr.: J. Mascis (vocals, guitar); Lou Barlow (vocals, bass); Murph (drums). Under threat of litigation, Dinosaur Jr. was forced to change their name from Dinosaur. The enhanced portion of this CD contains videos for "Little Fury Things" and "Just Like Heaven." This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Dinosaur Jr.: J Mascis (vocals, guitar); Lou Barlow (bass instrument); Murph (drums). Recording information: 1987. One of the great albums of the late-1980s US indie scene, 1987's YOU'RE LIVING ALL OVER ME is a pre-grunge guitar rock masterpiece. Clearly as influenced by, say, Black Sabbath as the nascent Seattle scene was atthe same time, guitarist J. Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow (whose "Poledo" is the album's weirdest song), and drummer Murph temper the sludgy guitar roar with speedier tempos, better melodies, and more incisive lyrics than most of the Seattlites could ever master. The result is spellbinding, and, unlike most indie albums of its era, this record doesn't sound the least bit dated. "Raisans," "Little Fury Things," and the aptly-named "Sludgefest" are the archetypal tracks, but there's not one dud to be found here. A classic. (Note: Most CD reissues include a contemporaneous B-side, a jokey but surprisingly good cover of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" that also appears on the FOSSILS compilation. Some versions, however, feature a take on Peter Frampton's "Show Me the Way," instead.) SKU: 6588354

Mended
Personnel: Marc Anthony (vocals); Michael Thompson (acoustic & electric guitars); Renne Toledo (acoustic & nylon string guitars); Eric Kupper (guitar, keyboards, programming); Chieli Minucci, Andy Abad, David Dominguez (guitar); Juan A Gonzalez (piano, keyboards); Cory Rooney (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Dan Shea (keyboards, programming); Marc Russell, Erben Perez (bass); Bobby Allende (percussion); Richie Jones (programming); Wendy Pederson, Raul Midon, Gizelle D'Cole, Shelen Thomas (background vocals). Producers: Marc Anthony, Dan Shea, Cory Rooney. Recorded at Sony Music Studios and The Hit Factory New York, New York, Cove City Sound Studios, Long Island, New York, Lobo Recording Studios, Deer Park, New York, The Stash, Miami, Florida, and at Record Plant Recording, Los Angeles, California. The man who starred in Paul Simon's infamous Broadway flop THE CAPEMAN only to rebound with star-making megahit "INeed to Know" offers more of his trademark blend of pop, R&B and Latin music on MENDED. Romantic Spanish guitars intersect with contemporary-sounding programmed drums to frame his sensual, yearning vocal style throughout MENDED. There are occasional stylistic detours; the pizzicato string samples on "Give Me a Reason" add a bit of a hip-hop flavor, and "I've Got You" is vaguely suggestive of some Latinate amalgam of George Michael's "Faith" and Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love" (seriously). But the romantic ballad remains Marc Anthony's stock in trade, and it's a stock with an excellent future (not to mention massive earning potential). SKU: 1073424

Deep Natural
The second CD of DEEP NATURAL contains instrumental dub versions songs from the first CD. Michelle Shocked seemingly never tires of reinventing the folkie/singer-songwriter aesthetic. She's already pioneered lo-fi anti-folk, and variously added a swinging horn section and alt-country godfathers Uncle Tupelo to her songs. So perhaps it shouldn't be so surprising to note that DEEP NATURAL finds her successfuly melding folk-rock and dub reggae (okay, maybeit still should). Not only does Shocked kick off the album with the aforementioned fusion on "What Can I Say," she adds an entire bonus disc of mostly instrumental dub tracks to the package (some of these even stretch the boundaries of dub itself, applying the approach to some anomalous idioms). In between, she tries her hand at everything from romantic Philly soul ("Forgive to Forget") to a tune that sounds like a Harlem gospel choir covering Santana's "Evil Ways" ("Good News"). Clearly, Shocked is not one to be pinned down. SKU: 1076489

Designs And Mistakes
It stars out unassumingly enough, a bluesy piano sample and a hip-hop beat. But it's quickly overturned when the hyper-active drums come crashingthrough the door, upsetting both the apple cart and your expectations. From that point on you've gone through the looking glass into a world hosted by Andrew Coleman (a.k.a., Animals On Wheels,) where dogs nod and both water-fowl and marine life dissolve in water. Animals On Wheels is mostly Drum and Space, chill-out electronica of the first order. but where he really shines is on tracks like "Soluble Ducks" and "Family." These songs are nothing less than beauty and the beat; gorgeous and dreamy melodies float over drum samples that reverse without warning, while mysterious sounds lurk in the shadows. SKU: 1041777

Last Broadcast, The
Initial copies of THE LAST BROADCAST include a limited edition bonus disc of 4 previously unreleased songs. Doves: Jez Williams, Jimi Goodwin, Andy Williams. Recorded in England between January 2001 and January 2002. England's Doves began as teenage purveyors of feel-good dance music in the early '90s as Sub Sub, and even scored a minor hit. After a studio fire cost them their equipment along with demos of their second release, the members of Sub Sub forged ahead, transform their sound and renaming themselves. With 200's LOST SOULS, Doves blew up in England and garnered a cult following inthe states, signaling a mess of anticipation for 2002's THE LAST BROADCAST. LAST BROADCAST clearly owes heaps to early-'90s shoegazing bands like Ride and Lush, nowhere more so than on the dizzying, spiraling "Words." At other times THE LAST BROADCAST recalls the Manchester (not coincidentally Doves' hometown) sound of the same era, particularly hearkening back to Inspiral Carpets (see "There Goes The Fear"). However, to truly describe Doves one would have to invoke everyone from the Kinks to James, as the threesome pick from all over the British musical map to conjure up a delectable sound, wholly its own. On THE LAST BROADCAST, Doves uphold the hope aroused by their thrilling debut. SKU: 1071860

Sounds Of Silence [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); Art Garfunkel (vocals). Producers include: Bob Johnston, Tom Wilson, Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Roy Halee. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded between March 10, 1964 and July 8, 1970. Originally released on Columbia Records (9269). Includes liner notes by Bud Scoppa. Though it was their second album, SOUNDS OF SILENCE was the record that introduced Simon & Garfunkel to the world at large. When the original, acoustic version of the title tune (included onthe debut album) was given a rock sheen here, courtesy of a hastily added electric backing track, folk-rock was invented, and Paul and Art were catapulted to superstardom. The songs here follow in that electrified direction for the most part, with the widescreen irony of "Blessed" buoyed by plangent guitar and drums, and the paranoid "Somewhere They Can't Find Me" pushed to neurotic extremes by an insistent rhythm section. SOUNDS OF SILENCE marked the introduction proper of Simon as sensitive song poet: intellectual, well-read, politely iconoclastic, self-consciously poetic--the perfect '60s folk-pop idol. Fortunately, Simon's melodic and lyrical prowess and the duo's beautiful post-Everly Brothers harmonies were enough to counteract any intrinsic tendencies toward pretension. From the romantic melodrama of "Kathy's Song" to the anthem of alienation "I Am a Rock," SOUNDS OF SILENCE was the ultimate sonic portrait of the artist as a young man. Somewhere, a young Morrissey was taking notes. SKU: 1062549

Songs For Distingue Lovers [Remastered]
Personnel: Billie Holiday (vocals); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Jimmie Rowles (piano); Barney Kessel (guitar); Red Mitchell (bass); Larry Bunker, Alvin Stoller (drums). Producer: Norman Granz. Reissue producer: MichaelLang. Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California between January 3 & 9, 1957. Includes liner notes by James Patrick. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. Comprised of the last five studio dates Holiday did for Verve, SONGS FOR DISTINGUE LOVERS finds Lady Day operating within her ideal environment; that of a small jazz combo. Accompanied by a legendary line-up including Sweets Edison, Ben Webster and Barney Kessel, Holiday sang with the clear enunciation and easy swing that had become her trademark. Wrapping her phrasing around standards by Rodgers & Hart, The Gershwins and Cole Porter, Billie Holiday demonstrated how years of singing with various jazz bands sharpened her ability to turn a song on its head through slight fluctuations in pitch and tone color. Here I Stand
Oyster Band: Alan Prosser (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, percussion); Chopper (vocals, acoustic guitar, cello, harmonica, Hammond B-3 organ, bass, percussion); Lee (vocals, piano, drums, percussion); John Jones (vocals, melodeon); Ian Telfer (fiddle, concertina, glass harmonica, rainstick). Additional personnel: Alaric Neville (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, bouzouki, melodeon, percussion); Chumbawamba (vocals, trumpet); Great Big Sea, Rowan Godel, Yulia Kuszta (vocals); Wild Slim Mustapha (bouzouki, boogaliser); Steafan Hannigan (whistle); Gino Lupari (bodhran). Engineers: Jake Rousham, Phil Elliott, Neil Ferguson. In rock history, many bands have fused folk and rock 'n' roll (The Byrds, Fairport Convention, 10,000 Maniacs). Maintaining that tradition--and keeping it vital--are England's Oysterband. They mix folk music of the British Isles (including Ireland and Scotland) with rootsy rock 'n' roll and dance beats, African and Balkan folk. Fiddles, pipes and banjo rub up against jangling guitars and pumping bass and drums. John Jones impassioned, urgent voice avoids pomposity, and the band plays with flair and drive. The anthem-like "This Is The Voice" features vocal support by Chumbawamba (Oysterband's lyrics address the personal and the political), and "On The Edge" addresses the brave struggle to survive in a mercenary world (with a cello part that echoes The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood"). HERE I STAND is more "produced" than most of Oysterband's previous albums, and with this album's lush, layered yet uncluttered and un-gimicky sound, that's not a bad thing at all. Oysterband writes songs with triumphant melodies that stay with you long after the CD player stops. SKU: 3101193

Rock Of The Westies
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano); Davey Johnstone (voice bag, acoustic, electric & slide guitar, banjo, background vocals); Caleb Quaye (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); James Newton Howard (harpischord, electric piano, Clavinet, Mellotron, Arp & Elka synthesizers, synthesizers); Ray Cooper (vibraphone, marimba, kettle drums, congas, tambourine, maracas, castanets, jawbone, shaker, windchimes, bell-tree, cowbell); Kenny Passarelli (bass, backround vocals); Roger Pope (drums); Kiki Dee, Ann Orson, Clive Franks, Labelle (background vocals). Recorded at Caribou Studios, Colorado. Includes liner notes by John Tobler. Digitally remastered by Tony Cousins (Metropolis Mastering, London, England). When Elton John went into the studio to record ROCK OF THE WESTIES, he did it with a revamped line-up. Davey Johnstone and Ray Cooper stayed on while Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson were replaced by Kenny Passarelli and Roger Pope respectively. Also added to the band were old mate Caleb Quaye and synthesizer player James Newton Howard, whose keyboard talents combined with John's and considerably broadened the unit's sound. WESTIES found EJ sounding revitalized after scoring seven consecutive top five hits in the preceding two years (The tropical-flavored "Island Girl" kept the streak alive by ending up at number one). With the Bernie Taupin/Elton John juggernaut creating up-tempo numbers such as "Grow Some Funk Of Your Own" and "Street Kids," the new band played with such magical synergy that even oddly titled numbers "I Feel Like A Bullet (In The Gun Of Robert Ford)" and "Billy Bones And The White Bird" had their own quirky appeal. Although most of this record is fairly obscure, ROCKOF THE WESTIES is a sprightly collection often overshadowed amidst better-known albums like TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION and HONKY CHATEAU. SKU: 5070708

Maverick A Strike
Producers: Finley Quaye, Kevin Bacon, Jonathan Quarmby. Reggae music combined with soul, rock and pop makes FinleyQuaye's debut album, MAVERICK A STRIKE, a pleasant mix of genres. Soft, subtle songs ("It's Great When We're Together,") reggae standards ("Ultra Stimulation") and industrial textures ("Supreme I Preme," "I Need A Lover") come together to create a interesting blend of music, easy to swallow. The Fender Rhodes vibrato on "Even After All" sounds dreamy and distant, giving off a relaxing, comforting feeling. Make sure you check out the title cut, which was co-produced by Kevin Bacon. With most of the cuts at least co-written by Quaye, his songwriting talents are apparent on this thirteen-song release. The Bob Marley-influenced textures make MAVERICK A STRIKE more than worthy of repeated spins. SKU: 1016930

Project English
Personnel includes: Juvenile, Big Tymers, Lil' Wayne, Baby, Turk, TQ, Hot Boys (rap vocals); Mannie Fresh (keyboards); Rick The Man (bass). Recorded at Cash Money Studios, Metairie, Louisiana and Circle House Studios, Miami, Florida. This beloved southern gangsta-rapper has already established a tradition of inventive beats and hard-hitting lyrics on his previous releases. Consequently, PROJECT ENGLISH, whose opening cut finds Juvenile confidently declaring "I told y'all I'd be back," is more a solidifying of position than a break for new ground. While many of the cuts here find Juvenile making his street roots apparent, there's enough of a celebratory atmosphere and funky southern feel to keep PROJECT ENGLISH from becoming the kind of bleak, existential offering so prevalent among Juvenile's peers. And as usual, there are intriguingsonic textures aplenty to accompany Juvenile's trademark blend of good humor and braggadocio. SKU: 1067930

Live At The Roxy
Social Distortion: Mike Ness (vocals, guitar); Dennis Danell (guitar); John Maurer (bass); Chuck Biscuits (drums). Recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California on April 7-9, 1998. Includes liner notes by Mike Ness. One of the longest-running California punk bands, Social Distortion began spewing musical venom in the early '80s. Over the years, their musical vision has been somewhat refined, but they've never compromised their integrity or lost a bit of their punch, a fact borne out by this 1998 live recording. Singer/songwriter Mike Ness is the archetypal tough guy with a heart of gold, chronicling the tribulations of the underclass in post-Reagan America over a jackhammer beat. As usual, the band leavens their punky assault with occasional touches of country and roots music, ason the spiritual-sounding "Ball & Chain" and a frenzied cover of "Ring Of Fire." Though they speak from the perspective of grizzled punk survivors, the band still targets youngsters with their bad boy attitude, as evidenced by Ness' incendiary, iconoclastic stage patter. LIVE AT THE ROXY is the band at their best, blazing through new tunes and old with equal fury. SKU: 1078254

Great Summit Master Tapes
THE GREAT SUMMIT: THE MASTER TAKES was originally released as THE COMPLETE LOUIS ARMSTRONG & DUKE ELLINGTON SESSIONS. Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Duke Ellington (piano); Trummy Young (trombone); Barney Bigard (clarinet); Mort Herbert (bass); Danny Barcelona (drums). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at RCA Studios, New York, New York on April 3 & 4, 1961. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern. Digitally remastered by Ron McMaster using 24-bit technology. One of the most historic jazz records ever recorded, THE COMPLETE SESSIONS bringstogether, for the first and only time, the two most influential figures in jazz. Living up to the expectations placed upon such a meeting would, of course, be impossible, but this album is wonderful by any standard. The format is an interesting one in that basically Duke Ellington assumed Billy Kyle's piano chair in the 1961 version of Armstrong's All Stars band. Rather than performing Armstrong's usual repertoire, however, the two giants chose to record a selection of Ellington's best compositions. The resulting album allowed Duke to play some of his most sensitive, relaxed jazz piano on record and gave Satchmo a chance to stretch out on some unfamiliar material, which he does with his usual flair and inventiveness. High points include Armstrong's boisterous solos, amazing improvised scatting and extra lyrics on a high-energy version of "Cottontail" and Ellington's lean, supple lines on "Duke's Place." The seemingly infallible trombonist Trummy Young contributes swinging, bluesy solos throughout and clarinetist Barney Bigard plays with an air of sophistication that well suits the Ellington vibe. Forever Alien
Spectrum: Sonic Boom (vocals, synthesizer, Theremin); Alf Hardy (synthesizer, vibraphone); Pete Bassman (programming). Recorded at Cabin Studios, Coventry, England. The primary post-Spacemen 3 outlet for the sound-for-sound's-sake guitarist/keyboardist Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember (who also leads the even more abstract Experimental Audio Research), Spectrum inhabits approximately the same musical space as Spiritualized, the band Kember's former partner Jason Pierce formed after Spacemen 3 folded in the early '90s. Like Spectrum's other releases, 1997's FOREVER ALIEN takes elements (especially on the opening "Feels Like I'm Slipping Away" and the unusually pop-oriented "Delia Derbyshire") from SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS-eraPink Floyd; early '70s German experimentalists like Can, Faust, Neu! and Amon Duul I & II; and the work of minimalist composers like LaMonte Young and Terry Riley. FOREVER ALIEN is more song-oriented and poppier than Kember's work with E.A.R., or even Spacemen 3. The pieces are also more concise and feature actual lyrics, unlike the improvisational and comparatively formless tendencies of those bands, where drones and unearthly sounds--not melodies--predominate. Through The Eyes Vol.1 (Mixed By Roni Size)
This is a continuous in-the-mix 2-CD set compiled and mixed by Roni Size. Producers include; Roni Size, Suv, Krust, Die, Surge. Engineers include: Die, D. Amso, Surge. Roni Size has a reputation as one of the earliest breakbeat innovators. Classic tracks like "Timestretch" and "It's a Jazz Thing" anticipated UK hardcorerave's emergence as a fully formed, completely original musical style. One might expect the musical vision of Size, one of drum-and-bass's elder statesmen, to have mellowed with age. Much of his Reprazent material aims for a more accessible commercial sound, but Size's singles on Bristol's Full Cycle label still emphasize brutalizing percussive breaks with a funky edge. While perhaps not as appealing to the home-listening set, Size's minimalist grooves are a raw reminder of the sound-system and DJ-oriented sound ecology that informs his more accessible works. Like Krust's volume in Full Cycle's THROUGH THE EYES series, this two-disc set pairs a collection of back-catalog tracks with a continuous DJ mix. The Full Cycle style remains consistent throughout, a testament to the like-minded artistic vision of those involved. Size favors a jazzier take on the formulaic two-step style. He and his associates experiment constantly, perfecting their percussive attack, chopping and dicing breaks into impossible funky drummer routines, and demonstrating advanced production tactics. THROUGH THE EYES is recommended as a primer on this important artist's underground material. SKU: 1038738

Winding Through Life
Personnel includes: Doyle Lawson (vocals, mandolin); Barry Scott (vocals, guitar, piano); Dale Perry (vocals, banjo); Doug Bartlett (vocals, fiddle); Jamie Dailey(vocals, bass); Barry Abernathy (vocals); Jimmy Van Cleve (fiddle). All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. WINDING THROUGH LIFE was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Southern, Country, Or Bluegrass Gospel Album. On WINDING THROUGH LIFE, Lawson and his band take time out from blazing their fiery bluegrass path to offer an all-gospel selection. Certainly, a bluegrass group with roots as deep as theirs is no stranger to the spirituals that make up such an important part of the traditional bluegrass repertoire. It's one thing to toss off a quick spiritual, but quite another to devote an entire album to songs of faith like these. Fortunately for all concerned, Lawson and company have vocal abilities to rival their picking prowess. In fact, the latter often takes a back seat here to the former. The tight, pure vocal harmonies of the group take center stage throughout the album. Nevertheless, there's enough solid picking to remind us that this is a world-class bluegrass group guiding us down the gospel path. SKU: 1025946

This Is Jazz
Personnel includes: Miles Davis (trumpet, flugelhorn); Gil Evans (conductor); Lee Konitz, Cannonball Adderly (alto saxophone); Wayne Shorter, Hank Mobley, John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); John Carisi, Johnny Coles (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland, Dick Hixon (trombone); Julius Watkins, Gunther Schuller (French horn); Bill Barber (tuba); Romeo Penque (flute, alto flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, oboe); Jerome Richardson (flute, alto flute, clarinet); Herbie Hancock, Wynton Kelly, Red Garland, Victor Feldman, Bill Evans (piano); Robert Irving III (synthesizer); John Scofield (guitar); Ron Carter, Paul Chambers, Darryl Jones (bass); Tony Williams, Art Taylor, Jimmy Cobb, Philly Joe Jones, Frank Butler, Al Foster (drums); Steve Thornton (percussion). Recorded between 1956 and 1984. Includes liner notes by James Isaacs. Digitally remastered by Tom Ruff (Sony Masters Studio, New York, New York). This is part of the Columbia/Legacy This Is Jazz series. Columbia's essential THIS IS JAZZ series serves as an invaluable introduction to jazz history for the novice. Featuring useful liner notes and invariably excellent track selections, each CD provides a thoughtful introduction to jazz's central figures for neophytes and a handy compilation for fans. Since Miles Davis recorded for Columbia exclusively from 1955 to his deathin 1991, one CD is not enough, and so this excellent selection focuses on Davis's most affecting and impressive ballad performances. From 1956's definitive rendition of "Dear Old Stockholm" to 1984's surprising and mildly controversial recasting of Cyndi Lauper's pop smash "Time After Time," MILES DAVIS PLAYS BALLADS features nine examples of the trumpeter's playing at its most heartfelt and beautiful. Highlights include the Gil Evans orchestral arrangement of Gershwin and Weill's "My Ship" and the classic "Flamenco Sketches" from 1959's legendary KIND OF BLUE. This is an essential collection.
