Rehearsals For Departure
Personnel includes: Damien Jurado, Ken Stringfellow, Sarah Shannon, Steve Berlin, David Bazan. Damein Jurado plunges headlong into the heartland on his second full-length album, REHEARSALS FOR DEPARTURE, putting aside the pop sound of his earlier disc and adopting a mostly alt-folk/alt-country sound that suits him perfectly. Produced by Ken Stringfellow of the Posies, these quiet, introspective, and beautiful songs primarily feature guitar and Jurando's distinctive Winnie the Pooh voice. Despite the change in his sound, it's clear that Jurandohasn't abandoned indie-pop altogether, as evidenced by great, catchy sing-alongs like "Honey, Baby" and "Letters and Drawings." There's also a surprise voice-over on "Eyes for Windows" that recalls a similar part on Simon and Garfunkels' "Old Friends." SKU: 1011587

Overnight Sensation
Motorhead: Lemmy Kilmister (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, bass); Phil Campbell (guitar); Mikkey Dee (drums). 1996's OVERNIGHT SENSATION, the second release from their new label, CMC, picked up exactly where 1995's SACRIFICE had left off. The band's finest recording since 1991's World War One themed 1916, OVERNIGHT SENSATION offers a smorgasbord of gritty sandpaper vocals from Lemmy, and their unique brand of chugalug guitar riffing. Highlights include the ballad "I Don't Believe a Word," as well as such rough and ready rockers as "Civil War," "Crazy Like a Fox," "Eat the Gun," "Love Can't Buy You Money," and thetitle track. With OVERNIGHT SENSATION, Motorhead continued to churn out inspired metal. SKU: 1005153

Figure 8
Personnel includes: Elliott Smith (vocals, guitar); Sam Coomes (bass); Joey Waronker, Pete Thomas (drums); Brion Smith (background vocals). Producers: Tom Rothrock, Rob Schnapf, Elliott Smith. Recorded at Abbey Road, London, England and Sunset Sound & Sonora Studios, Los Angeles, California. On his first record since his Oscar nomination courtesy director Gus Van Zandt's use of his music in the film "Good Will Hunting," Elliott Smith returns with another album's worth of gorgeous misery. Like Nick Drake before him, Smith has the ability to conjure beautifully poignant pathos, wrapping it in an elaborately arranged package worthy of a George Martin or Brian Wilson. Working with Beck/Foo Fighters producer Rob Schnapf, Smith uses Abbey Road Studios for some of these sessions, dressing up his tortured lyrics with orchestral arrangements that avoid any hint of mawkishness. Whether mourning a busted-up romance in "Everything Reminds Me Of Her," shying away from love on "In the Lost and Found (Honky Bach)," or burrowing into their own isolationwith "Can't Make A Sound," Smith's angelic vocals and harmonies recall CSN before their creative meter ran out. Elsewhere, this talented singer-songwriter employs the Beatles-esque "LA" as a conduit for observations about his new hometown, while sweet indignation directed at corporate fat cats is the driving emotion behind "Wouldn't Mama Be Proud?" Night Ride Home
Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, oboe, keyboards, percussion); Jeremy Lubbock (conductor); Brenda Russell, David Baerwald (vocals); Michael Landau (guitar); Bill Dillon (pedal steel guitar); Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone); Larry Klein (bass, percussion); Alex Acuna (percussion); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Karen Peris (background vocals). Released around the time that Seattle's grunge movement was exploding in full-blown angst, NIGHT RIDE HOME boasts a lost carnival of characters that wander through, seeming especially poignant. In the '60s when another angry, lost generation reigned, Mitchell's painterly portraits reflected the troubled times. More than two decades later, her songs mirror the mood swings of an aging generation nomore sure of their footsteps than they were in their youth. A quiet, restless album that evokes the electric stillness before a summer storm, NIGHT RIDE HOME looks back to Mitchell's jazzier '70s endeavors like COURT AND SPARK. Despite the album's softer turn, the fey warble of alto sax is not nearly as prominent (or intrusive) as on Mitchell's 1998 TAMING THE TIGER. "Come In From the Cold" is one of Mitchell's finest songs, a lilting memory play of adolescence, desire and mature revelation. The title track is a sultry love song that travels down a dark, back road, whereas "Nothing Can Be Done," featuring David Baerwald on vocals, is a churning acceptance of an affair gone sour. NIGHT RIDE HOME eloquently resurrects the past, but never hesitates to embrace the future. SKU: 1019642

Deja Vu
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Neil Young (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel: Jerry Garcia (steel guitar); John Sebastian (mouth harp); Gregory Reeves (bass); Dallas Taylor (percussion). Recorded at Wally Heiders Studio III, Los Angeles, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered. With the addition of ex-Buffalo Springfield guitarist Neil Young, DEJA VU built on the success of CROSBY, STILLS & NASH. Advance orders of 2 million promised another smash and the album delivered the crystaline harmonies of its predecessor, but with a harder-edge. Theshifting textures of the title song, the country sorrow of Young's "Helpless," and the fury of Crosby's "Almost Cut My Hair" balanced the more up-beat hit singles (Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock," Nash's "Teach Your Children" and "Our House"). When You Lie Next To Me
Personnel: Kellie Coffey (vocals); John Willis, Biff Watson (acoustic guitar); Dann Huff, Brent Rowan, J.T. Corenflos, Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin, Bruce Bouton (steel guitar); Jonathan Yudkin (mandolin, fiddle, cello); Billy Kirsch (piano); Steve Nathan, Tim Akers (keyboards); Glen Worf, Mike Brignardello (bass); PaulLeim (drums); Chris Rodriguez, Lisa Cochran, Kim Keyes, Russell Terrell (background vocals). With her big, brassy voice, Kellie Coffey could easily have been a Celine Dion-style pop diva, or even a Broadway-oriented Linda Eder-esque star. Instead, she lends her prodigious pipes to country music, and is rewarded with a hit album. Bold-stroke power-ballad anthems are Coffey's stock in trade, and she lays into them like she was born for it. Coffey is clearly no pop-tart tool of the Nashville hit machine; she has co-writing credit on most of the tunes on WHEN YOU LIE NEXT TO ME, and there's obviously a consistent aesthetic thread running through the album (for which equal credit must be given to producer/guitarist Dan Huff). Besides the usual pop and rock influences that are de rigeur, there's the occasional touch of R&B in Coffey's contemporary country sound. SKU: 6588392

Self Destructive Pattern [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Spineshank: Rob Garcia (vocals, bass); Jonny Santos (vocals); Souren "Mike" Sarkisyan (guitar); Tommy Decker (drums, programming). Roadrunner Records continues to make a strong case for the longevity of nu-metal with SELF-DESTRUCTIVE PATTERN, Spineshank's third full-length. With a relentless, grooving brutality not unlike Pantera, and the industrial grind of Ministry, the Ozzfest veterans have upped the ante by injecting more clean vocals to their sound (perhaps taking a cue from bands such as Opeth and Disturbed). "Violent Mood Swings" and "Slavery" open the set with unforgiving intensity. "Smothered" and "Self-Destructive Pattern" boast some catchy vocal melodies and more mature song structures that could be compared to later-era FatesWarning. Crack producer GGGartH (Catherine Wheel, Downthesun) dials in sparkling crunch and sample-driven futuristic sheen, resulting in a very contemporary and polished production. SKU: 1084762

Weezer
Weezer: Rivers Cuomo (vocals, guitar); Brian Bell (guitar, vocals); Matt Sharp (bass, vocals); Patrick Wilson (drums). Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York in August and September 1993. All songs written or co-written by members of Weezer. There's a demented pop fanaticism to Weezer you gotta love. Weezer's debut, produced by former Cars frontman Ric Ocasek, combines Pixies roller coaster guitar rides with a helping of Beatle-esque moptop harmonies. Ocasek's production and Weezer's strong material will bring a glimmer of recognition to the eyes of anyone who remembers the Cars' melodic pop hooks. Weezer's songs are groovy garage sales you wish happened every weekend. Songs like "The World Turned And Left Me Here" and "Surf Wax America" betray the heartof a kid who would rather skateboard to work every day than face up to the responsibility of buying a car. Rivers Cuomo's wit and songwriting chops are evident in "In The Garage," where he sums up his generation's fascination with kitsch pop culture. Cuomo readily makes fun of Kiss posters and his own "stupid words" and "stupid songs," but later, in "Say It Ain't So," his self-mocking seems more like self-protection. After a decade of divorced parents, Cuomo comes to terms with a childhood he didn't want to give up. "Dear Daddy I write you in spite of years of silence," he admits, begging him to "Say It Ain't So." WEEZER breathes life into the bloated corpse of guitar rock. If they'd only stay little till their pop records wore out, maybe more bands would be as enjoyable as Weezer. SKU: 1001954

Bad Company
Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, piano, guitar); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke(drums). Recorded at Headley Garage, Hampshire, England in November 1973. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is not heavy metal, this is not rock, this is heavy rock. There is a difference and Bad Company embodied it. Coming out of the blues-based band Free, Paul Rodgers immediately found good company with the talented Mick Ralphs. Although subsequent albums reworked the same basic theme, this is the standard by which Bad Company should be judged. Tightly structured songs, driving beat, immaculate guitar and, of course, the definitive vocals of Rodgers. Just replay "Can't Get Enough," "Bad Company" and "Ready For Love" as a reminder, and finish with the gentle "Seagull," one of Rodgers/Ralphs' finest compositions. SKU: 1002957

Tyr
Black Sabbath: Tony Martin (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Neil Murray (bass); Cozy Powell (drums). Additional personnel: Geoff Nicholls (keyboards). A more focused group effort than the previous ETERNAL IDOL, TYR features lyrics written by vocalist Tony Martin, with music by the whole band. Tony Iommi is still the ringmaster of the Sabbath circus, though, as his riffs power this heavy metal concept album. The title character is identified as the "son of Odin and the supreme sky-god of the northern peoples; the god of war and martial valor." Sabbath stalwart Geoff Nicholls' keyboards create an eerie atmosphere on TYR. Hard rock veterans Cozy Powell (drums) and Neil Murray (bass) provide a more than ample rhythm section. Tony Martin's vocal range is reminiscent of Ronnie James Dio, while Tony Iommi's constantly evolvingguitar playing is as tight as ever. He is THE heavy metal axe-grinder for the ages, influencing the genre's top names. TYR's heavy yet melodic sound is impressive, and plays a notable role in the history of a monumental group. Solo Sessions Vol.1
Solo performer: Bill Evans (piano). Recorded at Sound Makers Studio, New York, New York on January 10, 1963. Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. This is a solo piano session from jazz pianoicon Evans, recorded in January 1963 but not released until 1989. This is a set of standards & show tunes: "What Kind of Fool Am I," "'Spartacus' Love Theme," When I Fall in Love," the Miles Davis tune "Nardis," "My Favorite Things." Whether or not his personal problems had an impact on his playing is hard to say. Not that he plays poorly--he plays well. But this is Evans at his most haunted and introspective--the sound of a man nearing the end of his own rope. There is a spare, harrowing quality of this album that is hard to ignore--or forget. Not the best place to begin with Evans, but if you're already a fan, this is one to treasure. SKU: 1004647

Time And A Word
Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals); Peter Banks (guitar); Tony Kaye (keyboards); Chris Squire (bass, background vocals); Bill Bruford (drums). Recorded at Advision Studios, London, England in 1969-70. Originally released on Atlantic (8273). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Yes' second album is the last to feature original guitarist Peter Banks, and also the last to adhere to the debut's tendency toward elaborate covers of material by other '60s artists. The swirling, transmogrified version of Richie Havens' "No Oppoortunity Necessary" finds the band departing further from their source material than ever. A sweet, understated coverof Buffalo Springfield's "Everydays" provides some valuable contrast to the predominantly broad, sweeping arrangements. Tony Kaye's big, reedy Hammond sound is augmented by the string arrangements of Tony Cox, which push the band further toward the inevitable rock-classical fusion. On "Then" and "The Prophet," Jon Anderson takes early, tentative steps toward the spiritual/mystical/ecological mindset from which he would draw often for Yes' lyrics. The buoyant "Sweet Dreams" and the unabashed power ballad of the title track represent the remnants of the band's grounding in '60s pop. SKU: 1001728

Marcus Garvey
Burning Spear: Winston Rodney, Delroy Hines, Rupert Willington. Additional personnel: Earl "Chinna" Smith, Valentine "Tony" Chin (guitar); Carlton "Sam" Samuels (flute); Herman Marquis (alto saxophone); Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall (tenor saxophone); Bobby Ellis (trumpet); Vincent "Trommie" Gordon (trombone); Bernard "Touter"Harvey (piano, organ, clavinet); Tyrone "Organ D" Downie (piano, organ); Robert "Rabbi" Shakespeare, Aston "Family Man" Barrett (bass); Leroy "Horse" Wallace (drums). One of the most distinctive and original talents in the history of Reggae, Burning Spear--ne Winston Rodney--was launched internationally with this striking album. His deep, preaching vocal is immediately arresting, a characteristic enhanced by a dense and brooding accompaniment. Taking cues from Rastafarian chants, Spear subtly builds an intensity, locking each track into a seamless whole. His knowledge of black history brings a chilling realism to the album's lyrics, resulting in what is incontestably a milestone in the development of reggae. Listening to it is an education itself. The CD reissue has the bonus of the dub version GARVEY'S GHOST. SKU: 1085788

Red Letter Days
Contains the hidden track "Empire Of My Mind" which occursafter "Here In Pleasantville." The Wallflowers: Jakob Dylan (vocals, guitar); Romi Jaffe (keyboards, vibraphone); Greg Richling (Mini Moog synthesizer, bass); Mario Calire (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Mike McCready, Val McCallum, Rusty Anderson (guitar); Ben Peeler (lapsteel); David Campbell (strings); Lenny Castro (percussion); Bill Appleberry (programming); Mo Z M.D., Courtney Kaiser (background vocals). Recorded at Groovemasters, Sound City, and Record One, Los Angeles, California. On the surface, RED LETTER DAYS bears some sonic similarities to the previous couple of Wallflowers albums (rich, Byrdsy guitar tones, Tom Petty-ish roots-rock production, and of course Jakob Dylan's husky, engaging vocals). Closer listening, however, reveals a number of advances. For one thing, Dylan's lyrics are sharper than ever, especially on the darkly poetic verses of "When You're On Top," which nicely counterbalance an almost too-catchy chorus that smacks of chart envy. Similarly, "Three Ways" and "If You Never Got Sick" achieve a moody poignancy that's simultaneously visceral and evocative (no mean feat). There are new sonic developments as well; Rami Jaffee's keyboard arsenal sounds somewhat expanded beyond his trademark B-3 organ, and is utilized accordingly, to give many of the songs a more modern edge than the band has evinced in the past. One small step for man...well, you know the rest. SKU: 1078341
