With A Little Help From My Friends [Remastered]
Personnel: Joe Cocker (vocals); David Cohen, Tony Visconti, Jimmy Page, Henry McCullough, Albert Lee (guitar); Chris Stainton (piano, organ, bass); Tommy Eyre (piano, organ); Artie Butler (piano); Matthew Fisher, Steve Winwood (organ); Carol Kaye (bass); Paul Humphries, Clem Cattini, Mike Kelly, B.J. Wilson, Kenny (drums); Brenda Holloway, Merry Clayton, Madeline Bell, Sunny Hightower, Rosetta Hightower, Su Wheetman, Sunny Wheetman (background vocals). Producer: Denny Cordell. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Principally recorded at Olympic and Trident Studios, London, England in 1968. Originally released on A&M Records (3109). Includes liner notes by J.P. Bean. Joe Cocker's debut built on the promise of the title track, a hit single theprevious year, which had introduced the world to the singer's astonishing blues rasp of a voice and remains to this day one of the finest Beatles cover versions committed to vinyl. The vocal pyrotechnics of that song are muted on the rest of the album, with Cocker demonstrating his fine handling of more subtle material such as Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman" and "I Shall Be Released." Backed by his own seasoned Grease Band and session players Jimmy Page and Steve Winwood, Cocker sings with a soulful intensity that shone all too briefly during his wayward career. SKU: 1031409

David Live (At The Tower Theatre Philadelphia/Remastered) [Digipak]
Personnel: David Bowie (vocals); Earl Slick (guitar); David Sanborn (alto saxophone, flute); Richard Grando (baritone saxophone, flute); Mike Garson (piano, Mellotron); Michael Kamen (electric piano, Moog synthesizer, oboe); Herbie Flowers (bass); Tony Newman (drums); Pablo Rosario (percussion); Gui Andrisano, Warren Peace (background vocals). Recorded live at the Tower Theatre, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 12-15, 1974. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals); Earl Slick (guitar); David Sanborn (flute, alto saxophone); Richard Grando (flute, baritone saxophone); Michael Kamen (oboe, piano, Moog synthesizer); Mike Garson (piano, Mellotron); Herbie Flowers (bass guitar); Tony Newman (drums); Pablo Rosario (percussion); Warren Peace, Gui Andrisano (background vocals). Recording information: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1974). When David Bowie recorded what became DAVID LIVE at Philadelphia's Tower Theatre in July 1974, he had fully made the leap from Ziggy Stardust and landed feet-first into the shoes of the Thin White Duke. Despite announcing his retirement from live performance the year before, Bowie seemed no worse for wear fronting a ten-piece directed by future LETHAL WEAPON composer MichaelKamen and featuring new guitarist Earl Slick and horn player David Sanborn. This 2-CD set finds the chameleonic performer mixing in Ziggy-era classics such as "Rock 'N' Roll Suicide" with material from DIAMOND DOGS ("Rebel Rebel," "1984"), ALADDIN SANE ("Cracked Actor") and HUNKY DORY ("Changes"). The fullness of the horn section and the style of his back-up band give this set a soulful tilt powered by Slick's ballsy playing. This, along with a cover of the Stax nugget "Knock On Wood," pointed at Bowie's immersion in a Philly soul direction that emerged full-fledged on YOUNG AMERICANS. SKU: 6583793

Origin Of The Species Vol.2
Psychic TV: Richard Norris (vocals, guitar, samples); Fred Giannelli (guitar, keyboards, programming, samples); Alex Fergusson (guitar); Gini Ball (violin, viola); Genesis P. Orridge, Dave Ball (keyboards, programming, samples); Hugo Longden (bass); Z'Ev (percussion); Richard Schiessl, Don Bolles (samples). Includes liner notes by Genesis P. Orridge. Accurately subtitled "A Supply Of Two Tablets of Acid," 1998's double-disc ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES is Psychic TV at their most overtly psychedelic. The 21 lengthy tracks include remixes, live tracks and new material, but the overall effect is that of an endlessly undulating, occasionally threatening, sometimes lulling evocation of psychic derangement. Too dense and difficult to qualify as genuine bliss-out music, the tunesrepay close attention, but it's also often possible to--you should pardon the expression--turn off your mind, relax and float downstream. Hardcore aficionados of industrial music might not like it, but psychedelia enthusiasts should seek it out. SKU: 1043279

August
The Standard: Tim Putnam (vocals); Robby Duncan, Gail Buchanan, Jay Clarke, Rob Oberdorfer. Additional personnel: Skip Vonkuske, Edith Bradway (strings). Recorded at Supernatural Jackpot Studios, Portland, Oregon. After the success of The Standard's debut, they were afforded the opportunity to move up the indie-rock stepladder, recording their second album AUGUST, with equally august Touch and Go Records. Combining singer Tim Putnam's wavering vocals with alternately punchy guitar workouts and tense, often corrosive "quiet" passages, AUGUST explores a charred landscape of emotions using appropriately cryptic lyrics, uneasy distortions, and occasionally creepy atmospherics. Of particular note are "A Year of Seconds," a painful reminiscence about a lost love and barely controlled fury that sets the album's tone, and "Angelicate," which lyrically recalls Tom Waits-style small-town portraits and musically pairs with the album closer, "The Quiet Bar," a piano and string-driven elegy for a dead father punctuated by martial drums and muted ambient effects. But it's the seven-minute "Bells to the Boxer" that really stands out; a slowburner that crescendos after about three minutes with an impressively controlled explosion of ringing guitars and rolling drums. Live At The Regal
Personnel: B.B. King (vocals, guitar); Kenny Sands (trumpet); Johnny Board, Bobby Forte (tenor saxophone); Duke Jethro (piano); Leo Lauchie (bass); Sonny Freeman (drums). Producer: Johnny Pate. Reissue producer: Andy McKaie. Recorded live at The Regal Theatre Chicago, Illinois on November 21, 1964.Includes liner notes by Dick Shurman & Rick Ward. Digitally remastered by Eric Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California). No matter how good the studio sessions were, B.B. King was at his best on stage in front of an appreciative, if not ecstatic crowd. This set, recorded at Chicago's premier black theater on Novermber 21, 1964, delivered just that. Despite the less than perfect recording conditions, at a time when technology had yet to catch up with the demands placed upon it, the King of the Blues delivers a definitive performance on a programm that includes his recent single "Help The Poor." Also included in this set is a clutch of songs that were responsible for much of his success, "Everyday I Have The Blues," "Sweet Little Angel," "It's My Own Fault," "You Upset Me Baby" and "Woke Up This Morning" among them. The band, including tenorman Johnny Board and organist Duke Jethro, is lean but tight, providing King with a springboard from which to leap into flights of immaculate guitar playing and singing. Sing Loud Sing Proud
Dropkick Murphys: Ken Casey (vocals, bass); Al Barr (vocals); Marc Orrell (guitar, accordion, background vocals); James Lynch (guitar, background vocals); Ryan Foltz (dulcimer, mandolin, whistle); Spicy McHaggis (bagpipes); Matt Kelly (drums, bodhran, background vocals). Additional personnel: Shane MacGowan, Colin McFaull, Desi Queally (vocals); Rick Barton (guitar); Johnny Cunningham (mandolin); Brian Queally (whistle); Carl Kelly (Uilleann pipes); Joe Delaney (bag pipes); Andreas Kelly (accordion); Zack Brines (piano); Katie Terrio, Ryan Whelan, Marissa Alterie (background vocals). Recorded at The Outpost Studios, Stoughton, Massachusetts. The Dropkick Murphys are to punk what House of Pain was to rap. They bring an explicitly Irish sensibility to their chosen style (there are shamrocks on the album cover, and there's a bagpiper in the band, for goodness' sake) while remaining true to the conventions of the genre. Still, despite theoccasional jig-like detour or pennywhistle flourish, the Murphys aren't trying to reinvent punk. Their songs are presented the way punk was meant to be; loud, fast, hard, and simple. The driving guitars and pummelling drums that power these songs could be descended from the vintage Ramones (or at least Social Distortion) album of your choice. Admittedly, there aren't too many other punk bands that combine mohawks with kilts, or power chords with bodhrans, but that's what gives the Murphys their distinctive sound. SKU: 1054983

Finger Eleven
Initial pressings of FINGER ELEVEN contain a bonus DVD. Finger Eleven: Scott Anderson (vocals); James Black, Rick Jackett (guitar); Sean Anderson(bass); Rich Baddoe (drums). Recorded at Groovemaster Recording, Chicago, Illinois; The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. It's not too surprising that Ontario, Canada band Finger Eleven would wind up on Wind-Up Records. With their driving guitars and brooding vocals, they definitely seem like kin with labelmates Creed, Boy Sets Fire, Drowning Pool, 12 Stones, et al. What is fairly surprising is that with their remarkable knack for hooks, their first two albums, THE GREYEST OF BLUE SKIES and TIP, weren't more widely heard. However, that changed with this relentless, infectious, and eponymous record. The opening single, the ironically titled "Good Times," layers guitar over tribal drums, as hyper-insistent vocals assert themselves in a fierce chant before breaking into an undeniable and melodic chorus. It shifts from segment to segment, even drifting into prog-metal. Throughout this album, Finger Eleven cleverly digs into '70s rock, while referencing more contemporaneous hard rockers like Tool, and throwing in ample hooks. SKU: 1087967

Engineers: Wayne Pooley, Mark Needham, Skoti Alain Elliott. "Song C" was nominated for the2000 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. His time spent as a keyboardist with the Grateful Dead obviously put a bit of boogie into Bruce Hornsby's soul, as SPIRIT TRAIL makes it clear that Hornsby's graduated from Donald Fagen impressions to a more eclectic, rootsy approach that incorporates R&B, folk-rock, blues and more. Whatever stylistic mode Hornsby takes to spin his tales, he invests it with an undeniable funkiness that's apparent in both the subtle bop of the rhythm section and the syncopated meter of his always-intelligent lyrics. Naturally, the main instrumental ingredient of the album is Hornsby's piano work, ever energetic and inspired as it colors the earthy grooves of the tunes. Hornsby obviously had a lot on his mind this time around, as SPIRIT TRAIL spreads 20 tracks over two CDs, ranging from ballads to full-out rockers. SKU: 1000997

Big Hits Vol.2 (Through The Past Darkly)
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards (guitar, background vocals); Brian Jones (guitar, various instruments); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Producers: The Rolling Stones, Andrew Loog Oldham, Jimmy Miller. Recorded between March 1966 and May 1969 at Olympic Studios, London, England and RCA Studios, Hollywood, California. THROUGH THE PAST, DARKLY is a 1969 compilation that documents the transitional period during which the Stones--with Brian Jones still on hand-- went from being a great R&B band to the world's greatest rock & roll band. These were the songs that not only defined Mick and Keith's reputation as songwriters, but set much of the musical tone for the rest of the '60s rock world. "Paint it Black" is a dark, Eastern-tinged song fully as influential as any of the Beatles' similar efforts. Though somewhat atypical, "Dandelion" and "She's aRainbow" are baroque-pop classics on par with anything from PET SOUNDS. And of course, "Jumping Jack Flash," "Honky Tonk Woman," and "Street Fighting Man," with their locomotive rhythms and updated Chuck Berry riffs, were the standard against which all straight-up rock & roll would be measured well into the next century. Lefty: Dennis Hill (vocals, guitar); Lorenzo Giovanni (guitar, background vocals); Scottie Somers (bass, background vocals); Kenny Livingston (drums, background vocals). Principally recorded at Grandmaster Recorders, Hollywood, California in December 1999. Match the quirkiness of Cheap Trick (who the band cites as a major influence) with the aggro-pop hooks of the Foo Fighters, and youmight begin to imagine the very palatable sounds of Lefty. The band forgoes redundant power chord posturing while emphasizing nicely crafted melodic structures. "Girls" and "Secret" immediately bring to mind the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl's vocal sound while "Addiction" has some interesting vocal phrasing, too. "See Through Me" explores a modern-day backseat romance that would make Meatloaf proud, and "Rocket Ride" opens with a spoof on Jimmie Davis' "You Are My Sunshine" that recalls Nirvana's stab at "Get Together" on "Territorial Pissings." While Lefty isn't exactly going to astonish the world with pop innovation (why try to reinvent the wheel?) 4, 3, 2, 1 adds up to well-executed, solid power pop. SKU: 1075021

Blues From Laurel Canyon
BLUES FROM LAUREL CANYON was prepared from the original master tapes. Part change of musical direction and part musical therapy, BLUES FROM LAUREL CANYON was recorded just after the breakup of the final incarnation of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, that alternative finishing school for a whole slew of '60s UK musical talent. While the album continues the British blues maven's explorations in the genre, there's a sense of arrival, discovery and consolidation in these tracks, particularly the spooky "Medicine Man," with itspre-echoes of "Black Magic Woman," and the stark "First Time Alone," recorded with spare organ and guitar accompaniment. Mick Taylor's last Mayall recording before leaving to join the Rolling Stones finds the young guitar wizard in fine lyrical form, while the tablas bubbling through the album closer "Fly Tomorrow" carry an indelible stamp of genuine late-'60s hippiedom. Though no-one would seek out a John Mayall album for the authentic vocals--he barely sounds American, let alone black--his choices of both musicians and musical settings are always impeccable, and LAUREL CANYON delivers the goods on both counts. Lord God Muzick
Personnel: Lee "Scratch" Perry (vocals); Dwight Pinckney, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Leroy Badness (guitar); Deadley Headley, Henley Douglas (saxophone); Bobby Ellis (trumpet); Vin Gordon, John Ferry (trombone); Fox (keyboards, bass); Earl Fitzsimmonds, Herbie Miller, Tony Anthony, Chris Meredith, Dow Brain (keyboards); Danny Thompson (bass, drums); Flabba Holt, Aston "Family Man" Barrett (bass); Style Scott, Chris Meredith (drums); Uzziah "Sticky" Thompson (percussion); Angela Prince, Vicki Nelson,Marcia Baines, Sean, Omar, Yami Bolo (background vocals). Recorded at Channel One Studio, Kingston, Jamaica in December 1990. Released in 1991 and co-produced by Niney The Observer, Lee Perry's modestly-titled LORD GOD MUZICK is one of the Jamaican producer/performer's best late-period albums. Perry samples his own old records liberally-an intriguing trend continued in his later collaborations with The Mad Professor-and reworks the classic "I Am The Upsetter" into the new "Lee The Upsetter." Many of LORD GOD MUZICK's tracks are variations on a single rhythm first heard on the opening "Free Us." Highlights include the justifiably boastful "Hot Shit" and a pair of topical songs. "Colt The Game" is about the shooting death of Perry's friendly rival King Tubby. "Happy Birthday Marcus" celebrates the 100th anniversary of Rastafarian hero Marcus Garvey's birth and concludes, bizarrely enough, with a medley of barnyard sounds. LORD GOD MUZICK is a fine example of '90s roots-reggae. SKU: 4113588
