Rhythm Of The Saints
Personnel includes: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); Vincent Nguini (guitar, bass, clave); Georges Seba, Martin Atangana (electric guitar); Ringo Star, Ray Phiri (guitar); C.J. Chenier (accordion); Charles Doherty (alto & tenor saxophones); Jude Bethel (tenor saxophone); Errol Ince (trumpet); Dave Bargeron (euphonium); Clifton Anderson (trombone); Greg Phillinganes (synthesizer); Bakithi Kumalo (bass); Grupo Cultural Olodum, Steve Gadd (drums); Mingo Araujo, Remy Kabocka, Ya Yo De La Nelson, Sidinho, Dom Chacal (percussion); Briz, Karen Bernod, Myrna Lynn Gomila, Kia Y. Jeffries, Florence Gnimagnon, Charlotte Mbango, Djana'd, Elolongue Mbango Catherine, Ladysmith Black Mambazo (background vocals). Principally recorded at The Hit Factory, New York; Transamerica Studios, Impressao Digital Studios and Multi Studios Rio De Janiero, Brazil; Studio Guillhaume Tell, Paris, France. As singer/songwriter Frank Tedesso once put it, GRACELAND is the mountaintop and RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS is the mist around the peak. The latter certainly does seemto pick up where it's South African-flavored predecessor left off. Though RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS relies on the traditional musical forms of a different part of the world (Brazil), Simon uses a somewhat similar strategy. He wraps his very American voice and lyrics around the rhythms and harmonies of a culture much more dependent on polyrhythms. In the process, he creates a new paradigm that is simultaneously familiar and excitingly fresh. A new development is the undercurrent of social protest in the lyrics, something that GRACELAND only hinted at. A running lyrical theme is the intrusion of science and civilization upon nature, and the catastrophic results. When he finds no solutions in the world of men, Simon turns to the divine. On "The Cool, Cool River," he supplicates himself, with the understanding that "these prayers are the memory of God." However close he may get to heaven, RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS definitely finds Simon treading a step or two north of the earth. SKU: 1003228

Good Dog Happy Man
Personnel: Bill Frisell (acoustic & electric guitars, loops, music box); Ry Cooder (electric & Ripley guitars); Greg Leisz (pedal steel, lap steel, National steel & Weissenborn guitars, mandolin, dobro); Wayne Horvitz (piano, organ, samples); Viktor Krauss (bass); Jim Keltner (drums, percussion). Recorded at O'Henry Sound Studios, Burbank, California. Bill Frisell is like a chef or an alchemist. He brings together the characteristics and properties of diverse players to make one unique amalgam. With GOOD DOG HAPPY MAN, Frisell seeks the common ground between such musicians as bluegrass bassistViktor Krauss, erstwhile New York downtown jazzbo keyboardist Wayne Horvitz, blue country steel guitarist Greg Liesz, and journeyman rock drummer Jim Keltner. What these very different players have in common is the inability to fit into easily defined categories or molds. Similarly, Frisell's own musical voice draws from all corners of American tradition. GOOD DOG is an album steeped in locale. It exudes a sense of place. Frisell's compositions range from subtle groove frameworks ("Big Shoe") to fragile ballads ("Rain, Rain"). The lone cover, a traditional "Shenandoah," features guest guitarist Ry Cooder. This album falls beautifully between the earthiness of Frisell's NASHVILLE album and the spontaneous combustion of GONE, JUST LIKE A TRAIN. SKU: 1017757

Powerage [Digipak] [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Bon Scott (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Phil Rudd (drums). Recorded at Albert Studios, Sydney, Australia between February & March 1978. Originally released as Atlantic (19180). Includes liner notes by Ernie Welch. With AC/DC's third release, POWERAGE, the band was dispensing even heftier ammo from their hook-laden cartridge belt. With the rock-steady rhythm section pounding out 4/4 beats as if it were overtaking a small country, guitarists (and brothers) Angus and Malcolm Young trade towering riffs that belie their pint-sized physical stature. The real change on POWERAGE is a noted improvement in songwriting skill. The six-minute "Down Payment Blues" actually has a sense of restraint and building tension, as opposed to the band's usual hit-the-ground running approach. "Sin City," an ode to Las Vegas, featuresthe band's most colorful lyrics (that don't have to do with bathroom humor, that is) and again displays a dynamic variety not previously heard from the Aussie rockers. The more familiar pounders, "Rock 'n Roll Damnation," "Riff Raff," and "What's Next to the Moon" are tighter, focused bursts of energy that point towards the total mastery of the form the band would display on its next release, HIGHWAY TO HELL. GHV2 (Greatest Hits Vol.2)
Producers include: William Orbit, Shep Pettibone, Nigel Wright, Mirwais Ahmadazi, Madonna. Includes liner notes by Dan Cadan. The 90's proved to be an interesting time for MTV's First Lady as she dabbled with different music styles while pursuing movies, music and motherhood (not necessarily in that order). Like its perfect predecessor THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION, GHV2 features edited and remixed versions of her hits. Run in loosely chronological order, this collection kicks off during Madonna's overtly naughty face (the hypnotic "Erotica" and club anthem "Deeper And Deeper") to specific film fare (a sweeping "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and the delightfully psychedelic "Beautiful Stranger"). Madonna's most impressive moments came as a result of brilliant collaborations with electronica artists William Orbit and Frenchman Mirwais. Orbit's touch on songs from the critically acclaimed RAY OF LIGHT can be heard onthe chilly sparseness of "Frozen," infectious nature of the pulsing title track and ambient brilliance of "The Power Of Good-Bye". The Gallic producer/performer helped Madonna greet the millennium with MUSIC and a string of hits including stop-and-stutter thump of "Don't Tell Me" and the serpentine electro-funk that is the title track. Constantly changing her image the way most people change clothes, Madonna's equally quirky stylistic unpredictability maintains her hold on being pop's greatest musical chameleon. SKU: 1067616

Art Of The Trio Vol.3, The (Songs)
Personnel: Brad Mehldau (piano); Larry Grenadier (bass); Jorge Rossy (drums). Recorded atRight Track Studios, New York, New York on May 27 & 28, 1998. Mehldau is a strikingly original young jazz pianist, an innovator in a world too often bound by tradition. Combining classically influenced harmonic sensibilities with a sensitive, panoramic approach that owes to both Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, Mehldau burst onto the '90s jazz scene, taking the world by storm. SONGS is the third volume in a series of trio works that find Mehldau deftly accompanied by the stalwart rhythm section of drummer Jorge Rossy and bassist Larry Grenadier. As usual, Mehldau's explorations of the trio format are unique and unparalleled, combining bravado with a cerebral, almost meditative quality. Instead of flat-out improvisational vehicles, this recording (as the title indicates) concentrates on jazzy elaborations on the pop song format. Mehldau reaches far and wide for material, even tapping Radiohead ("Exit Music [For a Film]") and Nick Drake ("River Man"). Ultimately, though, it's Mehldau's distinctive touch that is the most prominent element of this intriguing collection. SKU: 1005503

Broken
Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel: Martin Atkins, Chris Vrenna (drums), Maise (background vocals). Having caught the public's attention with his catchy, chart- topping PRETTY HATE MACHINE, Trent Reznor was free to experiment with music less accessible to the mainstream. While his more fickle fans were disappointed with BROKEN, the faithful heard in it Reznor's true genius. Dark and edgy, BROKEN cuts the silence like a dirty knife--no singalong anthemshere. Only hard-hitting rhythms and no-holds-barred metal riffs flavor this sophomore effort. In BROKEN one can hear the artist maturing and simplifying his craft; Reznor succeeds here without relying on the trappings of pop formulas. The product of a burst of creative energy, BROKEN spawned a companion release of remixes, titled FIXED. From the tight, rapid-fire succession of chords that begins "Pinion" to the beautiful and dreamy jingling guitar of "Help Me I Am in Hell," BROKEN proved that Reznor was to remain a force in the alternative music scene. Big Bam Boom (Remastered & Expanded)
Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. Digitally remastered by Pat Martin. Hall & Oates: Daryl Hall, John Oates (vocals, guitar, synthesizer). Additional personnel: Tom "T-Bone" Wolk (guitar, synthesizer, bass guitar); G.E. Smith (guitar); Charlie DeChant (saxophone); Robbie Kilgore (keyboards, programming); Wells Christy (Synclavier); Mickey Curry (drums); Jimmy Bralower (drum); Bashiri Johnson (timbales); Jay Burnett (percussion); Clive Smith. Liner Note Author: Ken Sharp. This was Hall and Oates' most commercially successful album, and in retrospect it's not hard to figure out why; almost every track is either diabolically catchy (just try listening to "Out of Touch" without immediately having the chorus resonate in your head for the next few weeks), danceable ("Method of Modern Love"), arena-rock bombastic ("Bank On Your Love") or all three at the same time ("Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid"). It also helped that H&O had an ear towardhip-hop before most of their contemporaries, as witness the brief mostly instrumental "Dance on Your Knees" that opens the album; it's practically a homage to the Sugar Hill Gang's "White Lines". Travelling Without Moving
Track 13, "Do You Know Where You're Coming From," is listed on the album packaging only as "Bonus Track." Jamiroquai: Jay Kay (vocals); Simon Katz (guitar); Toby Smith (keyboards); Stuart Zender (bass); Derrick McKenzie (drums); Wallis Buchanan (percussion). Additional personnel includes: Simon Hale (conductor, arranger); M-Beat (arranger). TRAVELLING WITHOUT MOVING was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. "Virtual Insanity" won the 1998 Grammy for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Hailing from the same neo-R&B scene that spawned Soul II Soul and Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai continues to filter 1970s soul through asieve of '90s acid jazz on its third album. Sounding remarkably like Stevie Wonder, singer Jason Kay's airy vocals float over fat bass lines, disco rhythms and lush strings on "Cosmic Girl." "High Times" takes more of a bottom-heavy, P-Funk-meets-the-EWF-horns approach. Other up-tempo jams include "Use The Force," with its Afro-Cuban beat, and the equally funky, scratch-laden title track. Jamiroquai's eclectic bag of influences includes reggae (the loping "Drifting Along") and world music. Two instrumentals center on the otherworldly sounds of a didjeridoo. "Didjerama" is an ambient track that accentuates the instrument's hollow timbre with chirping birds and assorted percussion. "Didjital Vibrations" is quiet-storm music. An unlisted, drum-and-bass collaboration with M-Beat, "Do You Know Where You're Coming From," wraps up this vibrant package of Brit-soul. SKU: 1000520

Playmate Of The Year
Zebrahead: Justin (vocals, guitar); Ali (vocals); Greg (guitar); Ben (bass); Ed (drums). Additional personnel: Tavis Werts (horns, background vocals); Howard Benson (keyboards, programming); Gabe McNair (keyboards); Bobby Brooks (loops); A. Jay Popoff, Needham Park (background vocals). Recorded at The Gallery, Sherman Oaks, California and Sparky Dark, Calabasas, California. Zebrahead's PLAYMATE OF THE YEAR is quintessential turn-of-the-century pop-rock, blending an impressive variety of styles to arrive at a set of perfect pop radio fodder. Barenaked Ladies-style white-boy rap, Nirvana-flavored power riffs, Beck-influenced, loopy electronic touches, retro-'80s moves, and catchy, alt rock choruses are all combined here, to the great credit of producer Howard Benson, who manages to make the whole thing cohere. The album's upbeat title tune is a perfect case in point, as cheesy organ, breakbeats, rap, Big Rock guitar, and Cheap Trick-influenced vocal harmonies rub up against each other, but somehow never seem to clash. There are no grand artistic aspirations here; PLAYMATE OF THE YEAR is intended as fast-paced, breezy fun, which exactly what itturns out to be. SKU: 1073035

3 LPs on 2 CDs. The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (vocals, bass); Topper Headon (drums). Additional personnel: Mickey Gallagher, Timon Dogg, Norman Watt-Roy, J.P. Digitally remastered by Ray Staff & Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios). SANDINISTA! was The Clash's affirmation of their support for the Nicaraguan revolution, the movement that overthrew President Somoza and aroused the ire of U.S. President Reagan. The music was a more conscious exploration of reggae and dub music than the Clash had ever attempted. The group fought their record company to keep the 3-LP set affordable to their fans, accepting lower royalty rates so the price would be as low as a single LP. SKU: 1070814

Blues
Personnel includes: Jimi Hendrix (electric & acoustic guitar, vocals); Steve Winwood (organ); Jack Casady, Billy Cox, Noel Redding (bass); Buddy Miles, Mitch Mitchell (drums). Engineers include: Bob Cotto, R. Beekman, Mike Ross. Includes liner notes by Michael J. Fairchild. When the American expatriate James Marshall Hendrix made his triumphant return to the United States with ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?, he'd just smelted British pop psychedelia, R&B, Bob Dylan and Cream into a gleaming rock and roll alloy. Nothing quite looked or sounded like the musical melting pot that was the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Yet the American release of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? differed from the British version in one significant respect: "Everybody was scared to relase `Red House' in America," Hendrix recalled, "because they said `America don't like blues, man!'" Yes, it's hard to believe, but the Experience's original rendition of Jimi's epic "Red House" (recorded in London on December 13, 1966) appears stateside for the very first time on this superb compilation of Hendrix rarities (including 8 previously unreleased tracks), simply entitled BLUES. BLUES is probably the best packaged, richest sounding, most coherent post-mortem release from the Hendrix archives. Fleshed out by Michael J. Fairchild's detailed, informative essay, BLUES portrays Jimi Hendrix as a classic bluesman, a devout student of the tradition from down home delta stylings to sophisticated urban forms. Framed by his poignant 1967 acoustic 12-string rendition of "Hear My Train 'A Comin'" and a stirring 1970 trio performance, these 11 rough and ready tracks illustrate Hendrix's deep spiritual connections tohis blues roots, and his daring experimental take on the shape of future blues to come. Thus you have a moody studio outtake of his autobiographical "Voodoo Chile Blues" and a ruminative "Born Under A Bad Sign" (in which his Albert King tribute evolves with raga-like complexity). Hendrix's "Catfish Blues" is a powerful evocation of tribal elders Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, while his abstract chord changes and soaring, strident leads on the shuffling "Jelly 292" are an affectionate parody of classic urban blues lines such as "After Hours" and "Sweet Home Chicago." Taken as a whole, Jimi Hendrix's BLUES is the portrait of a great American original who was (like Stevie Ray Vaughan a generation later) just beginning to scratch the surface of his awesome talent. Greatest Hits Vol.2 [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. CLINT BLACK GREATEST HITS II includes 4 songs of new material. Personnel includes: Clint Black (vocals, guitar, classical guitar); Lisa Hartman Black, Steve Wariner, Martina McBride (vocals); Dean Parks, George Doering (acoustic guitar); Hayden Nicholas (electric guitar); Thomas Peterson (saxophone); Lee Thornberg (trumpet); Wendell Kelly (trombone); Randy Kerber (piano, celeste, music box); Matt Rollings (piano); Leland Sklar, Chuck Domanico (bass); John Robinson (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion). Producers: Clint Black, James Stroud, Mark Wright. Compilation producer: Clint Black. Any artist who's able to put out a second volume of hits must be doing something right. In the case of contempo-country megastar Clint Black, that particular something is a knack for striking just the right balance between old-school country music values and modern, pop-oriented songcraft and production. As GREATEST HITS II makes undeniably clear, Black walks that line with commitment and aplomb. On "Nothing's New" Black observes that "there's nothing like a steel guitar crying at night" and his assertion is borne out by the tune's arrangement. Traditionalist signifiers like this brush up shoulder to shoulder against the widescreen, pop-friendly production of "The Shoes You're Wearing" and "Still Holding On" (wherein Black duets with country thrush Martina McBride). It's just this kind of juxataposition and resultant cross-contextualization that enlivens Black's work. And for hardcore fanswho've already got all Black's albums, four new tunes are included as a pot-sweetener. SKU: 1067941

Little Johnny From The Hospital
Company Flow: El-P, Mr. Len (various instruments, programming). Additionalpersonnel: Appleseed, Don (bass). Recorded at Ozone, New York, New York. After blindsiding the industry with one of the more impressive hip-hop debuts, Company Flow here delivers a remarkable hip-hop instrumental album. After DJ Shadow's debut, "Endtroducing," many indie labels and producers tried to capitalize on the concept of a hip-hop album with original instrumentals, mostly without success. While a few of the tracks suffer from monotonous loops, the lion's share of the songs thrive on musical maturity and subtle twists. "Suzy Pulled a Pistol on Henry" and "Wurker Ant Uprise" are prime examples of what it takes to be a top producer in hip-hop's uncharted underground. Company Flow's El-P and Mr. Len have produced a masterpiece that has left hip-hop's cognoscenti hungry for a new release. SKU: 1077277

Light At The End Of The Tunnel, The
The Damned: Dave Vanian (vocals); Brian James (vocals, guitar); Captain Sensible (vocals, bass); Rat Scabies (drums). Additional personnel: Roman Jugg (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Lu Edmonds (guitar); Paul Gray, Bryn Merrick, Algy Ward (bass); Jon Moss (drums). Producers include: Nick Lowe, Jon Kelly, Tony Mansfield, Hein Hoven, Roger Armstrong. Includes liner notes by Herb Fenstein. Released in the late '80s by MCA, this compilation is an excellent two-disc introduction to the work of punk pioneers The Damned, covering pretty much everything of note, from their first singles to their 1986 hit "Eloise." It's an overview of the development of British pop from the mid-'70s, when punks ruled, to the fuller-sounding, over-the-top style of hit-making popularized by bands like Sparks and ABC. Of course the Damned knew exactly what they were doing with their more commercially acceptable later sound--hence the ring of the cash register at the end of the hit "Grimly Fiendish (The Bad Trip mix)." While not in chronological order, the recording dates for all tracks are listed, and the songs blend together nicely. The early hits are all here, including the punk smashes "Neat Neat, Neat," "New Rose," "I Feel Alright," "Plan 9 Channel 7," and "Love Song." These tracks, and the new wave XTC-like sounds of "Alone Again Or," "Is It a Dream," "Psychomania," and "In Dulce Decorum," arean excellent introduction to the Damned. SKU: 1019920

Has Been
More than 35 years after the release of his debut album, the genius William Shatner (alias Captain Kirk) teams up with Ben Folds to create "Has Been", a surprisingly pop driven lyrically potent collection of songs written by the duo. The exceptions being "Trying" co-written by Folds and novelist Nick Hornby "Real" by Brad Paisley and Pulp's "Common People". Shatner proves to be a witty and self depreciating poet while Folds' talent for crafting the perfect pop melody has never been more evident. Guests on the album include Joe Jackson on "CommonPeople" Aimee Mann Lemon Jelly Henry Rollins and Brad Paisley. SKU: 6570758

Final Concerts, The (Deep Purple Mark 3)
Deep Purple: David Coverdale (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Glenn Hughes (bass); Ian Paice (drums). Recorded live in Europe in 1975. This previously unreleased concert album documents the final days of Deep Purple Mark III, the edition of the band that featured David Coverdale and Glen Hughes. Derived from two shows in France and Austria, from the same tour that produced the heavily-doctored LIVE IN EUROPE album, it's far better than that critically-derided effort, featuring the band sonically unadorned, doing what they do best--making the audience's ears bleed. Perhaps because they knew this was the end, the players are unusually relaxed, especially guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. In his big solo section on "Mistreated," he noodles around flamenco-style during the French show, and on the alternate version included here from Austria he cheekily quotes from "Deutschland Uber Alles." Keyboardist Jon Lord also displays a sense of humor on "Space Trucking,"working in an extended bit from "Thus Spake Zarathustra," while vocalist Coverdale is even more over-the-top than usual, sounding for all the world like an opera singer who's just stuck his finger in an electric socket. Step In The Arena
Gang Starr: Guru (vocals); DJ Premier (DJ). Additional personnel: Lisle Leete (piano). Recorded at Calliope Productions, New York, Firehouse Studios and Such-A-Sound Studio, Brooklyn, New York. Reflecting the combination of inner-city upbringing and college education which both members share, Gang Starr manages to attain the perfect balance of intellect and street credibility; harder than so-called hard-core, more experimental than "experimental hip-hop" and funkier than 99.9 percent of mainstream rap's party jam output. In a culture based on battles and an industry known for feuds and ego-clashes, Gang Starris perhaps the only outfit to command respect from every corner of the hip-hop spectrum. Individually or as a unit, Guru & Premier have collaborated with "alternative" hip-hop crews (De La Soul, Digable Planets, Dream Warriors), jazz artists (Donald Byrd, Branford Marsalis) R&B stars (Janet Jackson, K-Ci & Jo-Jo) and hard-core MC's (KRS ONE, M.O.P., Notorious B.I.G) without ever compromising their cult status in the underground. Their second album STEP IN THE ARENA is the release that truly put the duo on map after "Manifest" and "Jazz Thing" first garnered public attention. In addition to pioneering the incorporation of jazz samples into the hip-hop canon of funk & soul drum breaks, this record witnessed DJ Premier single-handedly lifting the orchestration of turntable cuts to the level of a jazz soloist improvising on another musician's phrase. Far Over [Remastered]
Burning Spear: Winston Rodney (vocals); Michael Wilson, Devon Bradshaw (guitar); Bobby Ellis (horns, percussion); Herman Marquis (horns); Richard Johsnon (piano, Clavinet, organ, synthesizer); Aston "Family Man" Barrett (Clavinet, organ, bass, background vocals); Anthony Bradshaw (bass, percussion, background vocals); Nelson Miller (drums, octoban); Elias Rodney (percussion). Recorded at Tuff Gong Studios, Kingston, Jamaica in 1982. Includes liner notes by Roger Steffens. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Though Burning Spear will probably always and forever be known for his 1975 classic MARCUS GARVEY and its astonishing dub version, GARVEY'S GHOST, he's had one of the longest and most artistically fruitful careers in reggae history. FAROVER, a 1982 session,is one of his most powerful albums, combining his one-of-a-kind vocals with some of the strongest compositions of his career. The brooding title track sets the tone, with Aston "Family Man" Barrett's impossibly deep, dread-filled bass and pulsating clavinet moving the track along under Burning Spear's passionate declamations. It's a true reggae classic. Though perhaps not all of the songs are quite up to that opener, the no-nonsense "Education" and devotional "Jah Is My Driver" are also Burning Spear classics. Throughout, Richard Johnson adds tasteful synthesizer to the usual clavinet-and-organ grooves, foreshadowing the instrument's eventual domination of reggae, but FAROVER is pure roots-reggae all the way. In Concert Vol.1 [Remastered]
Solo performer: Joan Baez (vocals, guitar). Producer: Maynard Solomon. Reissue producer: Mark Spector. Recorded live between August 1962 and November 1963. Originally released on Vanguard (9112). Includesliner notes by Maynard Solomon and Arthur Levy. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Vanguard Records Original Masters Series. The 'queen of folk' was an accomplished live performer as this, the first of two In Concert albums proved. Accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, Baez brought her pure, virginal soprano to contrasting material. Her interpretations of Childe ballads 'Matty Groves' and 'The House Carpenter' are particularly moving, but an empathy with American folklore, including Woody Guthrie and the Carter Family, is equally apparent. Baez's reading of Malvina Reynolds' protest song, 'What Have They Done To The Rain', is especially arresting and inspired a later pop hit for the Searchers. This album helped take folk music out of the coffee-house circuit and into national consciousness. SKU: 1073236

Essential Willie Nelson, The
This CD commemorates Willie Nelson's 70th Birthday (April 30, 2003). Personnel includes: Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Ray Price, Leann Womack, Julio Iglesias, Leon Russell, Merle Haggard, Aerosmith. Producers include: Felton Jarvis, Arif Mardin, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Booker T. Jones. Compilation producers: Nich Shaffman, Al Quaglieri. Recorded between 1961 & 2002. The catalog of Willie Nelson is so vast and rich that assembling an "essential" collection of only one or two discs seems nearly impossible. RCA's single-disc 1995 attempt was admirable and worthy, but doomed by space limitations. With a bit more room to move, Legacy's roomier two-disc collection is about close as anyone could hope to come. We get the full view of the great singer/songwriter's artistic journey. "Hello Walls" and the evergreen "Crazy" hail from the days when Nelson was tooling around Nashville as a songwriter for hire but mystifyingly unable to connect as a solo artist. His transformation into a counterculture icon via the '70s "outlaw country" movement is marked by the likes of "Me and Paul" and "Bloody Mary Morning." His tremendous skill as in interpreter can be heard in such standards as "Blue Skies" and "Georgia on Mind," which helped make him a crossover success in the STARDUST era. Latter-day collaborations with everyone from Aerosmith ("One Time Too Many") to U2 ("Slow Dancing") show Willie's mercurial, eclectic nature. Add it all up and a portrait comes together of a man whose artistic vision has carried him across decades and stylistic shifts aplenty and seen him through in style. SKU: 1082871

Christmas With The Rat Pack
Full performer name: Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin/Sammy Davis Jr. Compilation producers: Frank Collura, Charles Pignome. Includes liner notes by James Ritz. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Sure, Bing Crosby might pop more quickly to mind when thinking of Christmas songs, but Frank, Dean, and Sammy had their shareof Yuletide ditties as well, a fact effectively borne out by the holiday collection CHRISTMAS WITH THE RAT PACK. If you're sick of the usual pap that passes for Christmas music from all corners of the stylistic map, try something from the swingin' side of town. Really now, wouldn't you rather hear such chestnuts (pun intended) as "Silver Bells," "The Christmas Song," and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" from the likes of these cats than some contemporary prefab pop or country cardboard cutout? Those aren't sleighbells you hear in the background, they're ice cubes clinking in a martini glass. SKU: 1077635

More Than You Think You Are [ECD]
Matchbox Twenty: Rob Thomas (vocals, piano); Paul Doucette (acoustic & electric guitar, piano, Clavinet, Mellotron, drums, percussion); Kyle Cook, Adam Gaynor (guitar, background vocals); Brain Yale (bass). Additional personnel includes: Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar); Carol Webb, Enrico Dicecco, Jonathan Minklage, Maura Giannini, Jan Mullen, Ricky Sortomme, Bonna Tecco (violin); Sue Pray, Sarah Adams, Crystal Garner, Vincent Lionti (viola); Eric Ralshe, Jerome Ashby (French horn); Paul Doucette (synthesizer); Matt Serletic (congas); Vanesse Thomas, Lydia Mann-Jaime, Melanie Daniels, Cheryl Pepsi Riley (background vocals). Recorded at Bearsville Studio, Woodstock, New York and The Hit Factory, New York, New York. In between his commitments to the band, Matchbox Twenty singer-songwriter Rob Thomas had spent the time leading up to the group's third album collaborating with everyone from Willie Nelson to Mick Jagger (his resuscitation of Carlos Santana's career already being old news by this point). Despite all these star turns, Thomas returned dutifully to the fold, and MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE definitely sounds like a band effort, not just Rob-and-the-other-guys. While the catchy "Disease" (no pun intended) occasionally comes a little too close to Carly Simon's "You Belong to Me" for comfort, its musical insistence and inventive production make it stick in the memory. "Bright Lights," with it's piano-laden elegiac feel, is somewhat akin to the Train hit "Drops of Jupiter." "Downfall" starts out like a rowdy piece of alt-rock, but eventually drops into a surprising gospel feel, complete with choir. Like the opening track "Feel," "You're So Real" is a hard-charging rocker full of nasty riffs, but it's followed by album-closer (not counting a subsequent hidden track) "The Difference," apower-ballad that's the closest thing on the album to what longtime fans might have been expecting from their mercurial heroes.
