A subtle--and sometimes not so subtle--point that Frank Zappa was trying to make with this series of live recordings spanning twenty years, was that the much-loved original Mothers of Invention were no match for his later ensembles. This two-disc set has one hour of the '60s-era band and another of one concert from '82 in Switzerland. It is evident that the original Mothers, while simply playing as well as they could, were establishing the foundation upon which all of the later bands were built. Zappa's desires as a composer led him to seek more skillful players, but the chemistry of his band's first four or five years is undeniably engaging. Everything they were trying was new. Later outfits forfeited the inter-band charm for prowess and a certain familiarity. Comparisons aside, the bottom line is that both Zappa's early and later bands possessed a range of staggering originality that's going to continue to sound new for a long time to come.

Unlike the bombastic, in-your-face style of Smashing Pumpkins, guitarist James Iha's solo debut is a collection of love songs wrapped in lighter-than-air harmonies and gentle hooks. Successfully achieving a warm sound throughout, Iha's fragile vocals caress every word as lush strings and lightly-strummed acoustic guitar emanate from songs such as "Silver String" and "One And Two." Havinghidden behind a mantle of screaming guitars for so long, Iha shows himself here to be a starry-eyed romantic, offering unconditional love and support in "Be Strong Now" and "No One's Gonna Hurt You," the two songs bookending the album. Elvis Costello is no stranger to the classicalcrossover. From his JULIET LETTERS album with the Brodsky Quartet to his collaboration with John Harle, the songwriter has found ways to channel his enthusiasm for classical music into a more pop-friendly format. On FOR THE STARS, Costello takes yet another step in that direction, providing songs, production and even the occasional duet vocal to frame the heavenly voice of Sweden's classical mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie Von Otter.
Von Otter's angelic delivery sits elegantly atop a smartly constructed group of chamber arrangements that appropriately meld pop sensibilities with semi-classical convention. Costello and Von Otter carefully selected pop songs whose melodic content was graceful enough to complement this approach, picking gems from the catalogues of Brian Wilson, Tom Waits and others. Fountains of Wayne turn self-conscious alt-rock geekdom into an unassailable art form on their second album UTOPIA PARKWAY. They combine classic power-pop song structure with a knack for the killer hook and an endless supply of self-referential lyrics detailing the lives of East Coast hipsters growing up in the postmodern age. Perfect pop harmonies, ringing guitars and the occasional synth sweep (for retro newwave credibility) match lyrics about "playing in a cover band" and taking "the N train down to Coney Island."
It quickly becomes plain that the outsider edge of the songs comes from the fact that the songs' characters are kids from the 'burbs who enter the city in search of deliverance, or at least relief from boredom. This scenario's apex is reached on "Laser Show," about driving into New York City's Hayden Planetarium to see Pink Floyd and Metallica laser shows. God bless those who write about what they know.

The ninth album by the Chieftains came at a traumatic time for the group, which had recently lost two founding members, tin whistle player Sean Potts and multi-instrumentalist Martin Tubridy, and was starting to be considered past its prime by some who felt that the ensemble had stagnated artistically. 1980's CHIEFTAINS 9: BOIL THE BREAKFAST EARLY blows a spirited raspberry to that idea.
Replacing Potts and Tubridy with the enthusiastic flute player Matt Malloy (formerly of the Bothy Band and Planxty), the group sounds re-energized. They not only play the jigs and reels with newfound energy (at times recalling the lively cutting contests of the Scottish group Silly Wizard), but also invest more emotion and subtlety in graceful airs, particularly "Bealach An Doirin." Indeed, the album's highest point is a solo vocalperformance by bodhran player Kevin Conneff, the heartbreaking "When a Man's in Love." At a time when many bands would be packing it in, BOIL THE BREAKFAST EARLY finds the Chieftains gearing up to explore new musical territories, as they would do throughout the following decade.

As much a charming tribute to a dear friend as it is a best-of compilation, JUDY COLLINS SINGS LEONARD COHEN: DEMOCRACY was released to coincide with Cohen's 70th birthday in September 2004. Collins was among the first performers todiscover the Canadian singer/songwriter's 's unique gifts, covering "Suzanne" and "Dress Rehearsal Rag" on her 1966 chamber-folk masterpiece, IN MY LIFE. Those songs, along with eight other previously released Collins renditions of Cohen songs, plus a 1999 live version of "Song for Bernadette" and three brand new recordings ("Democracy," "A Thousand Kisses Deep," and "Night Comes On") are collected here.
Combined with extensive liner-note reminiscences from Collins about the songs and their author, the album is something of a musical valentine, an idea that's a bit ironic considering Cohen's relentlessly sardonic worldview. One of Collins's strengths as an interpreter of Cohen's songs is that unlike some, she never loses sight of the essential warmth and dry humor in even Cohen's most sour songs. As a result, JUDY COLLINS SINGS LEONARD COHEN: DEMOCRACY might be the Leonard Cohen album for people who think they don't like Leonard Cohen.

Despite Beyonce Knowles's Diana Ross-like stature in Destiny's Child, newer member Michelle Williams beat Ms. Knowles to the punch when it came time to spin outa solo project following the announcement of the group's self-imposed break. Drawing from her musical roots growing up in the church, Williams's solo bow HEART TO YOURS is a gospel record with the kind of contemporary R&B/crossover trimmings normally associated with the likes of Yolanda Adams (whose name is mentioned by Williams in her lengthy list of thanks.)
Blessed with a light and sprightly vocal presence, the Rockford, Illinois native easily shifts gears whether she's going from a lush, piano-driven intro to a funkier, new-jack edge within "Rock With Me" or soaring throughout the bubbly, Janet Jackson-flavored "Sun Will Shine Again." For their third album, everyone's favorite Portland quartet asks you to break out the bong as they continue down the same woozy musical paths trod by Primal Scream and The Velvet Underground. Fronted by the always-insouciant Courtney Taylor, the Dandy Warhols mine a fertile vein of dream pop that includes forays into atmospheric country twang ("The Gospel"), Jesus & Mary Chain-like shoe-gazing ("Horse Pills"), and psychedelia with both Middle Eastern ("Mohammed") and Burt Bacharach-like ("Godless") touches.

Paddy MacAloon is arguably one of England's finest modern songwriters, andthis 1990 release was a gloriously overlong melange of styles, bound together by some of his most inspired melodies. The nineteen tracks cover a typically diverse range of subject matters, including a quartet of songs about the rise and fall of Elvis Presley that provide the album with its thematic core. Elsewhere, on songs such as 'We Let The Stars Go', 'All The World Loves Lovers' and 'Doo Wop In Harlem' MacAloon's songwriting hit new peaks. Never gaining the commercial success it deserved, Jordan: The Comeback's heady brew even appeared to be a step too far for MacAloon, who did not release another album for seven years.

Sonic Youth's second major-label album, producedand mixed by Butch Vig and Andy Wallace (a team that had helped turn Nirvana's NEVERMIND multi-platinum) was not the barefaced bid for mainstream acceptance that surly underground souls grumbled about in the pages of fanzines. While Vig and Wallace give guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, bassist Kim Gordon, and phenomenal drummer Steve Shelley a wide-screen panorama for their bizarrely-tuned assaults, DIRTY is probably Sonic Youth's most uncompromising album since 1985's BAD MOON RISING--particularly in the lyrical department.
Dropping the deliberate obscurantism, Philip K. Dick references, and smart-alecky snottiness, Sonic Youth brackets a slew of pointed political attacks ("Youth Against Fascism," "Swimsuit Issue," and the Jesse Helms-bashing "Chapel Hill") with two passionate tributes to the band members' murdered friend, Joe Cole ("100%" and "JC"). That DIRTY is Sonic Youth's most commercial-sounding album makes it that much more subversive.

"Lockjaw" is the perfect nickname for Eddie Davis, since he used a rather tight-lipped embouchure to get that gritty, almost distorted sound onhis tenor saxophone. On this 1961 Riverside release, Davis is teamed up with a Latin-jazz ensemble. Together, they perform memorable renditions of six Afro-Cuban compositions, plus a jazz standard ("Star Eyes").
Although the title track and "Alma Alegre (Happy Soul)" are rooted in blues, the other songs draw almost exclusively from the Afro-Cuban tradition. The use of a four-man trumpet section adds authenticity to this outing, as does the inclusion of percussionist Ray Barretto. This is an energetic album, featuring vigorous solos by Davis and all four trumpeters, and dense, fiery horn arrangements by Gil Lopez and Artie Azenzer. Though the performances are outstanding throughout, the scorchingly fast "Wild Rice" may be the record's high point.

Sometimes during a lunar eclipse, Earth's atmosphere casts the moon in a reddish glow, a lovely space oddity embraced by poets as a symbol of passion, suffering, and the human condition. It's likely that Secret Garden intended to evoke this by naming their album after the phenomenon, since passion and melancholy are in abundance here.
MOON continues the formula that worked so well on their best-selling predecessor, DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY: Celtic-flavored orchestral pieces by pianist/composer Rolf Lovland, featuring Fionnuala Sherry's fervent violin and a series of guest vocalists. "You RaiseMe Up" blends the most stirring elements of Celtic and gospel music, and features both a British gospel choir and Irish choral group behind Brian Kennedy's heartfelt vocals. "Greenwaves," with Karen Matheson's honeyed lead vocals, is the most traditional-sounding Irish ballad of Secret Garden's career; its lyrics lament the passing of youth and the loss of dreams. Luckily, the next track, "Invitation," is a flat-out jig that provides some necessary leavening to a largely serious set of songs. Secret Garden manages to convey both sincerity and grandeur in their music, a combination that has won them a huge international following and the respect of critics everywhere.

The Eagles were riding high on the success of their 1979 album THE LONG RUN when they released this two-LP live set (faithfully reproduced on two short CDs). They were also about to break up, making EAGLES LIVE their unintended swan song. Unintentional or not, EAGLES LIVE makes a nice wrapto the Eagles' not-so-long but incredibly strong run, featuring nearly studio-perfect renderings of the ballads ("Desperado") and country rockers ("New Kid in Town") on which they made their name, and of the tougher rockers they drifted toward later in their career (such as "The Long Run," which Glenn Frey introduces as "our tribute to Memphis, Tennessee"). EAGLES LIVE also includes a harmony-filled cover of Steve Young's lovely "Seven Bridges Road," which turned out to be the Eagles' last pre-reunion hit, and a couple of Joe Walsh solo turns (including "All Night Long," from the 1980 movie URBAN COWBOY). Most of the album was recorded in July 1980; a few tunes from October 1976 are thrown in for good measure. All of it was recorded in California, as an Eagles album should be.
