Roky Erickson is often categorized with loony visionaries like Daniel Johnston, Syd Barrett and Brian Wilson. His aggressive songs come from a place of normalcy tempered bya fair amount of personal eccentricity (like Johnston) and (like Barrett and Wilson) enthusiastic experiments with hallucinogens. Recorded primarily during a stay at a Texas psychiatric center during the early '70s, NEVER SAY GOODBYE is an unadorned document of Erickson's genius.
Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, Erickson's soulful singing adds a bittersweet edge to the optimism of songs such as "Save Me" and "Think Of As One." Religious imagery plays a major role in the Dylanesque rambling of "I Love The Blind Man;" the raw intensity of "Something Extra" presages the aggression of bands like Husker Du. Lines like "Sand does not blow breeze my soul" in "Never Say Goodbye" may induce some degree of head-scratching, but the heartfelt yearning of "Unforced Peace" and "I Love The Living You" makes the poor sound quality and bizarre non-sequiturs much more intriguing and accessible.

Sneaker Pimps have clearly mastered the art of having your cake and eating it too. On BECOMING X, the British band combines techno beats and samples with Big Rock Guitar and cutesy-girl vocals a la Letters To Cleo, covering all bases for an eclectic sound that keeps things from getting too staid or predictable. While the overall mood is one of darkness and urban-jungle drama, Sneaker Pimps manage to come up with enough propulsive rhythms and arresting hooks to bring a little light to the proceedings.
Tracks like "6 Underground" slow down the pace a bit and add some acoustic instruments into the mix, making for a Portishead/Everything But The Girl vibe. Elsewhere, the band's rock and roll aspirationrears its head. Whether they're trip-hopping, rocking and rolling or raving, though, Sneaker Pimps provide enough substance beneath their stylistic veneers to keep you coming back for more.

The soundtrack to the goofy slapstick film starring Ben Stiller as a model-turned-secret agent is effectively several albums at once. Half the disc finds contemporary artists reinventing various pop classics of the past, while the balance is made up original '80s tunes (Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," Herbie Hancock's "Rockit") and new songs by up-and-comers. Nikka Costa proves surprisingly incapable of carrying the relatively undemanding Blondie chestnut "Call Me," but No Doubt does a nice job of funking up Donna Summer's disco milestone "Love to Love You Baby." The Wallflowers' take on theBee Gees' '60s gem "I Started a Joke" adds a touch of the Beatles' "Dear Prudence" to the arrangement. The aforementioned '80s staples sound as effervescent as ever, and filler courtesy of Orgy and Powerman 5000 fails to detract from the overall jubilance of ZOOLANDER. And yes, it's got that Fatboy Slim-sounding song from the car commercial where the models sing along (Wiseguys' "Start the Commotion").

Though Neil Hannon's wise and wordy songs and Brian Ferry-like croon have always been at the heart of the Divine Comedy's sound, REGENERATION places Hannon's smart songwriting in focus to a greater degree than ever before. With Nigel Godrich manning the boards, it's not surprising that there's a tinge of Radiohead in the air, but the dominant approach is one of moody, elegant backing under Hannon's stinging sarcasm-filled lyrics. The opener "Timestretched" finds theneo-dandy Hannon exploring a neon-tinted prison of his own making. "The Beauty Regime" is an attack on surface-oriented value systems. "Bad Ambassador" is likely one of the finest tracks the Divine Comedy will ever record; a pumping, visceral anthem of an admittedly imperfect suitor whose ambitions overtake his abilities. Like Hannon, the tune is equal parts wit, infectious melody, and painstakingly uncovered heart.

Though Naughty By Nature will be hard pressed to equal the impact made with their 1991 self-titled debut and its smash hit, "O.P.P.," these New Jersey hip-hop champions have another sure-fire winner in NATURE'S FURY. Like NBN's previous releases, which tread the ground between hardcore rap and an accessible pop sensibility, what NATURE'S FURY achieves in terms of range, versatility, and synthesis of styles is impressive. From the radio-friendly bounce of "Holiday," through the speaker-rattling rock/rap marriage of "Radio" and such smooth and smoochy grooves as "Would've Done The Same For Me," NBN seem to achieve the impossible by making commercial music with genuine street credibility.
That the hybrid is so successful is due in no small part to the considerable talents of rappers and lyricists Vinnie and Treach (whose rapid-fire, tongue-twisting raps can rival anyMC on the scene) and the distinctive DJ magic of Kaygee. Studded with cameos (including Phiness, Zhane, Coffee Brown, and Big Punisher), this disc seems to achieve it all-rump-shakin' anthems, tales of ghetto life, fat beats, slick R&B-flavored pop, and rhymes to make your head spin-while wrapping the package together with punch and finesse.

Jessica Simpson was just 17 when she made her successful debut album. This followup makes it plain that she and her music have matured, with tracks ranging from straight-up, danceable pop to harder, groove-laden funk, R&B, ballads, and even gospel. Collaborating with such notables as Marc Anthony, Nick Lahey of 98 Degrees, Walter Afanasieff (Celine Dion) and Corey Rooney (Jennifer Lopez), Jessica is claiming her stake in the industry with this release.
The title track lives up to its name, a slice of hook-filled R&B-flavored pop. The same goes for "A Little Bit," where Simpson demands that her man takes care of his share and that "a little bit goes a long way." "There You Were" (a duet With Marc Anthony) is a well-crafted ballad. The other ballads hold up just as well, particularly "For Your Love," in which Jessica sounds like a seasoned veteran. On harder tracks like "Hot Like Fire" and "What's It Gonna Be," Simpson asserts herself and refuses to be played by a playa. D'LECTRIFIED, which was recorded entirely with acoustic instruments, is a brilliant exploration of Clint Black's musical roots, as well as a showcase for his superb songwriting and vocals. D'LECTRIFIED includes covers of classic tracks, new original songs, and reworkings of Black's previous hits. The cover versions, which include songs by Leon Russell ("Dixie Lullabye"), the Marshall Tucker Band ("Bob Away My Blues"), and even Monty Python's Eric Idle ("The Galaxy Song"), are enhanced by guest appearances from the likes of Bruce Hornsby, Edgar Winter, Waylon Jennings, and even Idle himself.
The new songs are the sort of melodic, well-written tracks you'd expect from Black, and these are also enhanced by collaborations. Greek composer/keyboardist Vangelis has been through so many stylistic mutations over the years that it's hard to pin down his musical center. From the progressive rock of his band Aphrodite's Child to his art pop collaborations with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson and his romantic film score work, he's shown many sides of a complex artistic persona. EL GRECO extends his vision one step further. Inspired by and dedicated to legendary 16th century Greek painter El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos), this is an impressionistic aural landscape. The album is filledup by a single 11-movement symphonic piece written by Vangelis and rendering in a surprisingly organic manner on his arsenal of keyboards. Marley's consistent (certainly by reggae standards) album career has proffered many great songbooks, of which EXODUS is just one good example. The singles "One Love" and "Jamming" will be familiar to anyone with even a passing acquaintance with Jamaican music, but just as vital are the touchingly vulnerable love song "Waiting In Vain," the title track, and the splendid "Guiltiness." This was the first album to featureJunior Murvin on guitar, while the expressive use of horns adds new texture to the established quality of the Wailers' backing. Like most of his work, vital for a comprehensive collection.

The music of Korn speaks to those on the fringes of society. The band's trademark hip-core has evolved into a more clearly defined but equally urgent musical vision. Korn's sense of musical urgency and its ambition to make its mark on music is furthered with ISSUES.
"Beg for Me" is a track likely to incite the swirling pits at the band's legendary live shows. The film EXIT WOUNDS marks the arrival of rapper DMX as a leading man, as he makes a dramatic showing that highlights his forceful intensity. The accompanying soundtrack disc is similarly intense, featuring some of the finest hip-hop artists around.
Also appearing on this album is, of course, DMX himself,who contributes one of the most memorable cuts; a hip-hop version of the Bill Withers classic "Ain't No Sunshine" that amplifies the moodiness of the original. This is far from a one-man show, however. Patti Smith was working through grief when she returned from her eight-year recording hiatus to cut GONE AGAIN (1996) and PEACE & NOISE (1997). She was dealing with the deaths of a number of close friends and family members--including husband Fred "Sonic" Smith--within a short time. Having achieved a degree of musical catharsis, Smith teamed with Pixies/Catherine Wheel producer Gil Norton for 2000's sonically gorgeous GUNG HO.
Smithreaches beyond her punk roots, incorporating pennywhistle and mandolin into her folk-flavored song about Custer's wife ("Libbie's Song"). Longtime band member Lenny Kaye includes Middle Eastern-sounding nuances in his co-written tale of Salome ("Lo and Beholden"). Among the more stirring numbers are "Strange Messengers," written from the chilling viewpoint of a slavery victim, and "Glitter in Their Eyes," a chirpy, new wave-y anthem decrying today's rampant materialism. GUNG HO's 10-minute-plus title track/centerpiece lauds North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh, portraying him as a patriot in love with our Constitution. "Gung Ho" will no doubt rankle a few Vietnam vets. A revitalized and inspired Smith avoids the trap of dry, didactic historical regurgitation, serving up another reminder of why she is rightly considered a downtown doyenne.

If you've ever been to a religious prayer meeting of any denomination, you'll be familiar with the emotional content of this collection of archive recordings of the master Pakistani qawwal Nusrat FatehAli Khan. Devotional, inspirational, at times ecstatic, these songs echo the soulful call and response of Gospel music, the timelessness of ancient Hebrew hymns, and the grittiness of traditional folk music.
Nusrat's tempered, mystical wail predominates, but the shifting rhythms and the complex melodies of the qawwali party (and it certainly sounds like a party) are what drive these energetic pieces along. As with all the best religious gatherings the overall effect is, of course, hypnotic; there is ultimately no choice but to surrender to the all-enveloping chants, and, like the participants in these compelling recordings, be carried along on the euphoric sonic wave of these songs of devotion to the ineffable.
