Never Say Goodbye
Recorded between 1971 & 1985. Includes liner notes by John Darnielle. Roky Erickson is often categorized with loony visionaries like Daniel Johnston, Syd Barrett and Brian Wilson. His aggressive songs come from a place of normalcy tempered bya fair amount of personal eccentricity (like Johnston) and (like Barrett and Wilson) enthusiastic experiments with hallucinogens. Recorded primarily during a stay at a Texas psychiatric center during the early '70s, NEVER SAY GOODBYE is an unadorned document of Erickson's genius. Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, Erickson's soulful singing adds a bittersweet edge to the optimism of songs such as "Save Me" and "Think Of As One." Religious imagery plays a major role in the Dylanesque rambling of "I Love The Blind Man;" the raw intensity of "Something Extra" presages the aggression of bands like Husker Du. Lines like "Sand does not blow breeze my soul" in "Never Say Goodbye" may induce some degree of head-scratching, but the heartfelt yearning of "Unforced Peace" and "I Love The Living You" makes the poor sound quality and bizarre non-sequiturs much more intriguing and accessible. Becoming X
Producers: Line Of Flight, Jim Abbiss, Flood. Engineers: Jim Abbiss, Line Of Flight, Flood, Luke Gifford, C. Goddard. Sneaker Pimps have clearly mastered the art of having your cake and eating it too. On BECOMING X, the British band combines techno beats and samples with Big Rock Guitar and cutesy-girl vocals a la Letters To Cleo, covering all bases for an eclectic sound that keeps things from getting too staid or predictable. While the overall mood is one of darkness and urban-jungle drama, Sneaker Pimps manage to come up with enough propulsive rhythms and arresting hooks to bring a little light to the proceedings. Tracks like "6 Underground" slow down the pace a bit and add some acoustic instruments into the mix, making for a Portishead/Everything But The Girl vibe. Elsewhere, the band's rock and roll aspirationrears its head. Whether they're trip-hopping, rocking and rolling or raving, though, Sneaker Pimps provide enough substance beneath their stylistic veneers to keep you coming back for more. SKU: 6335934

Zoolander
Compilation producer: Desiree Craig-Ramos. The soundtrack to the goofy slapstick film starring Ben Stiller as a model-turned-secret agent is effectively several albums at once. Half the disc finds contemporary artists reinventing various pop classics of the past, while the balance is made up original '80s tunes (Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," Herbie Hancock's "Rockit") and new songs by up-and-comers. Nikka Costa proves surprisingly incapable of carrying the relatively undemanding Blondie chestnut "Call Me," but No Doubt does a nice job of funking up Donna Summer's disco milestone "Love to Love You Baby." The Wallflowers' take on theBee Gees' '60s gem "I Started a Joke" adds a touch of the Beatles' "Dear Prudence" to the arrangement. The aforementioned '80s staples sound as effervescent as ever, and filler courtesy of Orgy and Powerman 5000 fails to detract from the overall jubilance of ZOOLANDER. And yes, it's got that Fatboy Slim-sounding song from the car commercial where the models sing along (Wiseguys' "Start the Commotion"). SKU: 1068710

Scars Of The Crucifix
The controversial death metal quartet's tenth album, their first on Earache Records, keeps to the same basic format as their previous works, but with a definite progression from their last album 'In Torment In Hell'. The overall style and image of the album reflects earlier album 'Once Upon A Cross' but tracks such as 'Go Now Your God Is Dead' and'When Heaven Burns' show that the band are capable of musical and lyrical progression. Regeneration
Personnel: Neil Hannon (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Bryan Mills, Ivor Talbot (guitar, bass); Philip Sheppard (cello); Millennia Strings, London Telefilmonic Orchestra (strings); Joby Talbot (recorder, piano, synthesizer); Stuart "Pinkie" Bates (trombone, organ, synthesizer); Rob Farrer (drums, percussion); Miggy Barradas (drums). Recorded at RAK, London, England. Though Neil Hannon's wise and wordy songs and Brian Ferry-like croon have always been at the heart of the Divine Comedy's sound, REGENERATION places Hannon's smart songwriting in focus to a greater degree than ever before. With Nigel Godrich manning the boards, it's not surprising that there's a tinge of Radiohead in the air, but the dominant approach is one of moody, elegant backing under Hannon's stinging sarcasm-filled lyrics. The opener "Timestretched" finds theneo-dandy Hannon exploring a neon-tinted prison of his own making. "The Beauty Regime" is an attack on surface-oriented value systems. "Bad Ambassador" is likely one of the finest tracks the Divine Comedy will ever record; a pumping, visceral anthem of an admittedly imperfect suitor whose ambitions overtake his abilities. Like Hannon, the tune is equal parts wit, infectious melody, and painstakingly uncovered heart. SKU: 1055103

Nineteen Naughty Nine (Nature's Fury)
Naughty By Nature: Vinnie, KayGee, Treach. Additional personnel: Adam Kudzin, Castro (vocals); Tony Sunshine, Cliff Lighty (background vocals); Coffee Brown, Mag, Krayzie Bone, Silkk The Shocker, Chain Gang Platune, Phiness, Zhane, Master P, Mystikal, Big Punisher, Rustic Overtones, Sari, Cindy. Producers include: Naughty By Nature, Mufi, Donald Robinson, KayGee, Falonte Moore. Engineers include: Adam Kudzin, Darren Lighty, Ken Johnston. Though Naughty By Nature will be hard pressed to equal the impact made with their 1991 self-titled debut and its smash hit, "O.P.P.," these New Jersey hip-hop champions have another sure-fire winner in NATURE'S FURY. Like NBN's previous releases, which tread the ground between hardcore rap and an accessible pop sensibility, what NATURE'S FURY achieves in terms of range, versatility, and synthesis of styles is impressive. From the radio-friendly bounce of "Holiday," through the speaker-rattling rock/rap marriage of "Radio" and such smooth and smoochy grooves as "Would've Done The Same For Me," NBN seem to achieve the impossible by making commercial music with genuine street credibility. That the hybrid is so successful is due in no small part to the considerable talents of rappers and lyricists Vinnie and Treach (whose rapid-fire, tongue-twisting raps can rival anyMC on the scene) and the distinctive DJ magic of Kaygee. Studded with cameos (including Phiness, Zhane, Coffee Brown, and Big Punisher), this disc seems to achieve it all-rump-shakin' anthems, tales of ghetto life, fat beats, slick R&B-flavored pop, and rhymes to make your head spin-while wrapping the package together with punch and finesse. Irresistible
Personnel includes: Jessica Simpson, Marc Anthony (vocals); Mats Berntoft, Chieli Minucci (guitar); Paul Sheyne, Jeanette Olsson (background vocals). Producers include: Louis Biancaniello, Sam Watters, Rhett Lawrence, Ric Wake, Rodney "Darkchild" Jenkins. Engineers include: Dave Scheuer, Steve MacMillan, Paul Foley. Jessica Simpson was just 17 when she made her successful debut album. This followup makes it plain that she and her music have matured, with tracks ranging from straight-up, danceable pop to harder, groove-laden funk, R&B, ballads, and even gospel. Collaborating with such notables as Marc Anthony, Nick Lahey of 98 Degrees, Walter Afanasieff (Celine Dion) and Corey Rooney (Jennifer Lopez), Jessica is claiming her stake in the industry with this release. The title track lives up to its name, a slice of hook-filled R&B-flavored pop. The same goes for "A Little Bit," where Simpson demands that her man takes care of his share and that "a little bit goes a long way." "There You Were" (a duet With Marc Anthony) is a well-crafted ballad. The other ballads hold up just as well, particularly "For Your Love," in which Jessica sounds like a seasoned veteran. On harder tracks like "Hot Like Fire" and "What's It Gonna Be," Simpson asserts herself and refuses to be played by a playa. Jessica's been singing gospel since she was young, and goes back to her roots on "His Eye Is On The Sparrow," piping out alarge dose of soul. SKU: 1061954

Supersonic And Demonic Relics (Expanded) [ECD] [PA]
Full title: Supersonic & Demonic Relics. This is an Enhanced CD, which includes both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include the "Anarchy In The U.K." video. Motley Crue: Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee. Producers include: Bob Rock, Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, Nikki Sixx. Includes liner notes by Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars. Motley Crue had racked up quite a few b-sides and oddities by the time their entire back catalogue was remastered and reissued in the late '90s. Several songs that were recorded at the beginning of the '90s specifically for the DECADE OF DECADENCE hits collection became unavailable when the album was discontinued in favor of 1998's GREATEST HITS release. So with the reissues came '99's SUPERSONIC & DEMONIC RELICS, a 15-track collection of the songs written for DECADENCE, as well as additional b-sides and rare tracks. Featured wasan "Extended Holiday Version" of "Hooligan's Holiday" (remixed by Skinny Puppy), as well as covers of the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the U.K." and Tommy Bolin's "Teaser," and a live version of the 1989 hard rock hit "Dr. Feelgood." Time Is Tight
Booker T. & The MG's: Booker T. Jones (vocals, trombone, organ, piano); Steve Cropper (guitar, percussion); Lewie Steinberg, Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). Additional personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Albert King (vocals, guitar); Boz Scaggs (vocals); G.E. Smith (guitar); Charles "Packy" Axton (tenor saxophone); Floyd Newman (baritone saxophone); Gene Parker, Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Isaac Hayes (piano, keybaords, cowbell); Leon Haywood (organ); William Allan (keyboards); Terry Manning (marimba); Earl Grant (bass); Anton Fig, Jim Keltner, Steve Potts (drums); Magnificent Montague (congas). Producer: Booker T. & The MG's. Compilation producers: Rob Bowman, Bill Belmont. Recorded between 1962 and 1993. Includes liner notes by Bill Belmont and Rob Bowman. Even though the average pop fan only knows Booker T and the MGs for their biggest Top 40 hit under their own name, the supremely funky instrumental "Green Onions," they were THE backing band of the '60s. Nearly every one of the classic Stax/Volt singles of this era--by Sam and Dave, Otis Redding and a seemingly endless list of others--features organist Booker T. Jones, bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, superlative guitarist Steve Cropper and powerhouse drummer Al Jackson Jr. TIME IS TIGHT collects most of the MGs' singles, plus unreleased goodies and live tracks; this three-disc set is the bedrock of Memphis soul. Booker T and the MGs were able to make "Ode To Billy Joe" and "Never My Love" sound funky, for cryin' out loud! Plus, theset includes a lengthy slice of MCLEMORE AVENUE, the group's brilliant, underappreciated song-by-song cover of the Beatles' ABBEY ROAD. Pure genius. SKU: 4121078

D'lectrified
Personnel includes: Clint Black (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, bass harmonica); Steve Wariner (vocals, acoustic guitar); Bruce Hornsby (vocals, piano); Waylon Jennings, Eric Idle, Lisa Hartman Black, Kenny Loggins (vocals); Dean Parks (acoustic, slide, resonator & classical guitars); Marty Stuart (mandolin); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Kevin Nealon (5-string banjo); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); Joel Peskin (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Edgar Winter (alto saxophone); Jerry Hey, Gary Grant (trumpet); Bill Reichenbach (trombone); Matt Rollings (piano); Abraham Laboriel (acoustic bass); John Robinson (drums); Lenny Castro (tambourine, washboard, percussion); Steve Real, Bobbi Page, Susan Stevens Logan, Joe Pizullo (background vocals). Engineers: Julian King, Ricky Cobble, Jeff Basso. "When I Said I Do" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. D'LECTRIFIED, which was recorded entirely with acoustic instruments, is a brilliant exploration of Clint Black's musical roots, as well as a showcase for his superb songwriting and vocals. D'LECTRIFIED includes covers of classic tracks, new original songs, and reworkings of Black's previous hits. The cover versions, which include songs by Leon Russell ("Dixie Lullabye"), the Marshall Tucker Band ("Bob Away My Blues"), and even Monty Python's Eric Idle ("The Galaxy Song"), are enhanced by guest appearances from the likes of Bruce Hornsby, Edgar Winter, Waylon Jennings, and even Idle himself. The new songs are the sort of melodic, well-written tracks you'd expect from Black, and these are also enhanced by collaborations. Black's duet with Steve Wariner on the groovin' "Been There" is one of the album's highlights, while the beautiful "When I Said I Do" features vocals from Black's wife, actress/singer Lisa Hartman. But the real revelation just might be the old songs.Black has completely reinvented his hits "Burn One Down" and "No Time to Kill" with cool, funky arrangements that incorporate horns and Hornsby's piano. Black's talents as a country hitmaker are well-documented, but D'LECTRIFIED proves him to be a true musical visionary. SKU: 1086476

El Greco
Personnel: Vangelis (various instruments); Montserrat Caballe, Konstantinos Paliatsaras (vocals). Engineers: Philippe Colonna, Frederick Rousseau. Includes liner notes by Vangelis. Greek composer/keyboardist Vangelis has been through so many stylistic mutations over the years that it's hard to pin down his musical center. From the progressive rock of his band Aphrodite's Child to his art pop collaborations with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson and his romantic film score work, he's shown many sides of a complex artistic persona. EL GRECO extends his vision one step further. Inspired by and dedicated to legendary 16th century Greek painter El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos), this is an impressionistic aural landscape. The album is filledup by a single 11-movement symphonic piece written by Vangelis and rendering in a surprisingly organic manner on his arsenal of keyboards. Fans of his film scores should find much to enjoy in this delicate work full of sophisticated but friendly textures. SKU: 5061210

Desperado
The Eagles:Glenn Frey (vocals, guitar, piano); Bernie Leadon (vocals, guitar, banjo, mandolin); Randy Meisner (vocals, bass); Don Henley (vocals, drums). Recorded at Island Studios, London, England. Drawing from their previous experience as hired musicians, the Eagles quickly became one of America's leading country rock attractions. DESPERADO, their second release, was an ambitious concept album wherein the outlaw was used as a metaphor for the rock performer. Recorded in London under the aegis of Glyn Johns, the set was marked by the quartet's highly measured playing and distinctive harmonies. Described at their inception as the "new Buffalo Springfield", the Eagles certainly drew on Californian musical heritage, but on this album they proclaimed an original identity. Desperado is their most complete, and for many, their best album. It deserves at least equal billing with HOTEL CALIFORNIA. SKU: 1001304

Exodus [Remastered]
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Bob Marley (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, percussion); Aston "Familyman" Barrett (guitar, bass, percussion); Julian "Junior" Marvin (guitar); Tyrone Downie (keyboards, percussion, background vocals); Carlton Barrett (drums, percussion); Alvin "Seeco" Patterson (percussion); Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt (background vocals). Producer: Bob Marley & The Wailers. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Recorded at at Harry J's, Kingston, Jamaica and Island Studios, London, England between January & April 1977. Originally released on Island (9498). Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Marley's consistent (certainly by reggae standards) album career has proffered many great songbooks, of which EXODUS is just one good example. The singles "One Love" and "Jamming" will be familiar to anyone with even a passing acquaintance with Jamaican music, but just as vital are the touchingly vulnerable love song "Waiting In Vain," the title track, and the splendid "Guiltiness." This was the first album to featureJunior Murvin on guitar, while the expressive use of horns adds new texture to the established quality of the Wailers' backing. Like most of his work, vital for a comprehensive collection. SKU: 1069254

Issues
Korn: Jonathan Davis(vocals, bagpipes, drums, programming); Munky, Head (guitar); Fieldy (bass, programming); David Silveria (drums). Additional personnel: Jeffy Lube (programming). Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California and Southern Tracks Recording, Atlanta, Georgia. The music of Korn speaks to those on the fringes of society. The band's trademark hip-core has evolved into a more clearly defined but equally urgent musical vision. Korn's sense of musical urgency and its ambition to make its mark on music is furthered with ISSUES. "Beg for Me" is a track likely to incite the swirling pits at the band's legendary live shows. Showing that the group hasn't lost its down-to-earth sensibility, Korn invited fans to compete for the cover art of ISSUES, releasing versions featuring the winning piece as well as the efforts of three finalists. The emotional journey undergone by vocalist Johnathan Davis on tracks like "Hey Daddy" is truly strengthened by his movement away from his more abrasive vocal style and toward a more dominantly melodic approach. Davis digs more deeply into his tortured emotions on efforts such as "No Way," where he sings: "lately things aren't going my way / lately everything is gray / it feels like something / it feels like nothing." That hazy emotional landscape is what strikes a responsive chord with Korn fans and makes ISSUES a landmark album. SKU: 6435589

Exit Wounds
Producers: Jimmy Henchmen, Flent Coleman, Eric "Von Zip" Martin. The film EXIT WOUNDS marks the arrival of rapper DMX as a leading man, as he makes a dramatic showing that highlights his forceful intensity. The accompanying soundtrack disc is similarly intense, featuring some of the finest hip-hop artists around. Also appearing on this album is, of course, DMX himself, who contributes one of the most memorable cuts; a hip-hop version of the Bill Withers classic "Ain't No Sunshine" that amplifies the moodiness of the original. This is far from a one-man show, however. The bittersweet "Gangsta Tears" (Nas) and the funky pimp's tale "Hey Ladies" (Lady Luck w/Redman) make an equally strong impression, as do tracks featuring Timbaland, Mack 10, and a host of other hip-hoppers. Gung Ho
Personnel: Patti Smith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Lenny Kaye, Oliver Ray (acoustic & electric guitars); Jackson Smith, Tom Verlaine (guitar); Kimberly Smith (mandolin); Rebecca Weiner (violin); Skaila Kanga (harp); Ben E. Franklin (penny whistle); Grant Hart (piano, Farfisa organ); Tony Shanahan (keyboards, bass); Jay Dee Daugherty (drums); Michael Stipe, Wade Raley (background vocals). Recorded at Sear Sound, New York, New York. "Glitter In Their Eyes" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Patti Smith was working through grief when she returned from her eight-year recording hiatus to cut GONE AGAIN (1996) and PEACE & NOISE (1997). She was dealing with the deaths of a number of close friends and family members--including husband Fred "Sonic" Smith--within a short time. Having achieved a degree of musical catharsis, Smith teamed with Pixies/Catherine Wheel producer Gil Norton for 2000's sonically gorgeous GUNG HO. Smithreaches beyond her punk roots, incorporating pennywhistle and mandolin into her folk-flavored song about Custer's wife ("Libbie's Song"). Longtime band member Lenny Kaye includes Middle Eastern-sounding nuances in his co-written tale of Salome ("Lo and Beholden"). Among the more stirring numbers are "Strange Messengers," written from the chilling viewpoint of a slavery victim, and "Glitter in Their Eyes," a chirpy, new wave-y anthem decrying today's rampant materialism. GUNG HO's 10-minute-plus title track/centerpiece lauds North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh, portraying him as a patriot in love with our Constitution. "Gung Ho" will no doubt rankle a few Vietnam vets. A revitalized and inspired Smith avoids the trap of dry, didactic historical regurgitation, serving up another reminder of why she is rightly considered a downtown doyenne. SKU: 1030165

Dust To Gold
Personnel: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (vocals); Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, Irshad Ali (vocals, harmonium); Rahat Ali Khan (vocals); Dildar Hussain (tabla); Asad Ali, Ilyas Hussain, Naseef Ahmed, Khaled Mehmood (background vocals). Recorded at Sargam Studio, Lahore, Pakistan in June 1997. If you've ever been to a religious prayer meeting of any denomination, you'll be familiar with the emotional content of this collection of archive recordings of the master Pakistani qawwal Nusrat FatehAli Khan. Devotional, inspirational, at times ecstatic, these songs echo the soulful call and response of Gospel music, the timelessness of ancient Hebrew hymns, and the grittiness of traditional folk music. Nusrat's tempered, mystical wail predominates, but the shifting rhythms and the complex melodies of the qawwali party (and it certainly sounds like a party) are what drive these energetic pieces along. As with all the best religious gatherings the overall effect is, of course, hypnotic; there is ultimately no choice but to surrender to the all-enveloping chants, and, like the participants in these compelling recordings, be carried along on the euphoric sonic wave of these songs of devotion to the ineffable. USSR (Life From The Other Side)
Personnel includes: DJ Vadim, El-P, BMS, Iriscience, Swollen Members, Blu Rum 13, Moshun Man, Mr. Thing, First Rate, Noid, Dug Infinite, Blade, DJ Primecuts, Skinnyman, Starvin Artists, Sarah Jones, Toastie Taylor, Mucho Mu, Killer Kela. DJ Vadim emerged from behind the Iron Curtain and settled in London, bringing a talent for Eastern Bloc academic posturing to U.K. hip-hop's volatile verbalism. After establishing his reputation with unique turntable tricks and minimalist grooves and setting up the groundbreaking Jazz Fudge label, theerstwhile Vadim Peare turned his attentions outward. He has since become a hip-hop ambassador, scouting scattered hip-hop communities for the freshest rhymes, the fastest fingers, and the phattest sounds. DJ Vadim's select crew gives USSR: LIFE FROM THE OTHER SIDE a friendly, familial feel. Among the rappers, vocalists, and turntablists strutting their stuff over Vadim's terse, abstract "Russian Percussion" are artful scratcher DJ Primecuts, Company Flow's El-P and BMS (spilling lyrics like liquid on the fantastic "Viagra"), Swollen Members, Sarah Jones (whose acid-tongued delivery illuminates "Your Revolution"), Jupiter Jam & J.A.E., Blurum 13, Iriscience, Toastie Taylor, and Jazz Fudge veteran Blade. Assuming the role of the magnanimous producer, Vadim sets the stage for his skilled associates and watches from the wings as they do their thing. The emphasis is on fun and funk, with cute, sample-based sketches and fade-out instrumentals linking smoldering cuts like "English Breakfast," "Friction," "The Pact," "It's Obvious," and Blade's adoring "From Russia With Love."
