Goddess In The Doorway
Personnel includes: Mick Jagger (vocals); Bono, Rob Thomas (vocals); Marti Frederiksen (acoustic guitar, bass, background vocals); Wyclef Jean (electric & Spanish guitar); Lenny Kravitz (guitar, bass, drums, tambourine, background vocals); Pete Townshend, Joe Perry (guitar); Matt Clifford (piano, keyboards); Phil Spalding (bass); Kenny Aronoff, Ian Thomas, Jim Keltner (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion); Ruby Turner, Elizabeth Jagger, Georgia May Jagger (background vocals). Producers include: Marti Frederiksen, Mick Jagger, Matt Clifford, Lenny Kravitz, Wyclef Jean. Engineers include: Rich Chycki, Max heyes, Henry Hirsch. Solo efforts by the voice of the Rolling Stones tend to be few and far between, so each one arrives with a certain degree of attendant fanfare and attention. GODDESS IN THE DOORWAY, Jagger's first footstep into the 21st century, is arguably the most deserving of all that attention. The outsized pop production of opening tracks "Visions of Paradise" and "Joy" suit Jagger's larger-than-life persona, and the hip-hop influenced beats of "Dancing in the Starlight" are representative of the old rocker's concessions to the modern world. Jagger's contemporary mode is further exemplified by the edgy buzz of "God Gave Me Everything," co-written with Lenny Kravitz, who plays most of the instruments on the track, and by the sharply funky "Hide Away," on which none other than Wyclef Jean contributes production and guitar. Elsewhere there are more contemplative nods to Jagger's blues and countryroots, but in the main GODDESS proves that a seasoned veteran like Jagger can be completely in tune with the times without sacrificing his identity. Concert For Bangladesh, The [Remastered]
Recorded live at Madison Square Garden on August 1, 1971. Originally released on Apple Records. For ashort while after the break-up of the world's most revered group, George Harrison was by far the most successful moptop. Unlike the others, he was getting out amongst other musicians, and generally having a much better time. This concert, although blighted by some non-payment shenanigans, remains an important milestone in rock history. It stands up very well 23 years on even though Ringo still forgets the word in "It Don't Come Easy" and most people will skip through the Ravi Shankar section. Leon Russell sounds good, George carries his own numbers admirably, but it is Mr. Dylan that made us cry. SKU: 1069737

Plains
Early pressings include two limited edition bonus tracks. Solo performer: George Winston (guitar, piano). Includes liner notes by George Winston. Alltracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. PLAINS was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. A distinctly American sensibility comes shining through the august soundscapes of master new-age pianist George Winston. This is not too surprising. In addition to his generous catalog of releases for Windham Hill, Winston has also written the soundtracks to a Charlie Brown film on the Constitution and released albums on the Informed Democracy label. PLAINS makes clear, however, that there are some dark, occasionally unsettling undertones to Winston's aesthetic. Such shadows belie the notion that new age is a genre without a sinister side. For one thing, Winston is not afraid to drift into angular, Thelonious Monk-like playing, as he does on a reading of Angelo Badalamenti's "The Swan." Despite the familiar rolling rushes of melody that introduce the album-opening "Dubuque," calling to mind, as they always do, Civil War documentaries and pre-game baseball tributes, Winston plays a portion of the song's refrain on plucked piano strings. "Before Barbed Wire" is another highlight, its lightly roiling melodic tension resolving into gushes of major chords. For good measure, PLAINS includes two slack-key solo guitar pieces--played by Winston himself--as bonus tracks. SKU: 5065853

London Calling (25th Anniversary Edition/+DVD) [Digipak]
Full title: London Calling: The Legacy Edition. Additional package information: Digipak. LONDON CALLING: THE LEGACY EDITION includes a bonusDVD featuring an exclusive 45 minute documentary on the making of the album. The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (vocals, bass instrument); Topper Headon (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Baker Glare (whistling); The Irish Horns (brass); Micky Gallagher (organ). Recording information: Wessex Studios, England (07/1979 - 08/1979). If punk rejected pop history, LONDON CALLING reclaimed it, albeit with a knowing perspective. The scope of this double set is breaktaking, encompassing reggae, rockabilly and the group's own furious mettle. Where such a combination might have proved over-ambitious, the Clash accomplish it with swaggering panache. Guy Stevens, who produced the group's first demos, returns to the helm to provide a confident, cohesive sound equal to the set's brilliant array of material. Boldly assertive and superbly focused, London Calling contains many of the quartet's finest songs and is, by extension, virtually faultless. SKU: 6567399

After Hours
Personnel: Sarah Vaughan (vocals); Mundell Lowe (guitar); George Duvivier (bass). Recorded at RKO Pathe Studios, New York, New York on July 18, 1961. Includes liner notes by Charles Fox. With only guitar and string bass as accompaniment, these 11 recordings from 1961 are distinctly intimate, the spare instrumentation proving that less is more. This settingspotlights Vaughan's vocals as they were meant be heard. Sarah Vaughan's voice is multi-textured as she varies the weight of her delivery on these standards. She has a graceful power, using a variety of vocal techniques. Modulating up and down the scales, and sustaining notes for ecstatic intervals she shapes "Ill Wind," with sensuousness. Radiant and unfaltering on all these songs, Vaughan possesses an unimpeachable technical mastery, and uses her full-bodied keening to underscore the torchy and erotic undertones of these ballads. Evil Empire
Rage Against The Machine: Zack De La Rocha (vocals); Tom Morello (guitar); Tim Bob (bass); Brad Wilk (drums). Recorded at Cole Rehearsal Studios, Hollywood, California. "Tire Me" won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. "Bulls On Parade" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. "People Of The Sun" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. This long-awaited sophomore release from Rage Against The Machine does not disappoint. Its grinding, ferocious guitar twists Public Enemy-like riffs in and out of the rhythm section's metallic pummeling. But as usual, while Tom Morello's guitar sets the pace, Zach De La Rocha's lyrical attack steals the show. It is, after all, the EVIL EMPIRE they're raging against. De La Rocha goes for the jugular with barbed lyircs, claiming in "Bulls On Parade" that "this microphone explodes, shattering the molds" in a world where "people ain't seen a brown-skinned man since theirgrandparents bought one." The group's rap-like rhythmic savvy and hard-rock edge bring them to a new plane. In "Snake Charmer," De La Rocha speaks of "greed" with a delirious excitement. Evidently, Rage Against The Machine will continue to rebel against the EVIL EMPIRE. SKU: 1002330

A much admired and loved man, of all the many brilliant orchestration projects this was his finest in his own right. He teases us with the opening of 'La Nevada' until the gorgeous repeated four-bar riff finally bursts on our ears with orgasmic delight. There are wonderful brass solos from John Coles, Tony Studd and Budd Johnson and a bass showcase for Ron Carter. As the opening track peters out after 15 minutes the listener enjoys the smug realization that there are a further four outstanding pieces to come. SKU: 1019882

Blue Wild Angel (Jimi Hendrix Live At The Isle Of Wight/+DVD)
Full title: Blue Wild Angel: Live At The Isle Of Wight. Additional package information: Slipcase. Includes a 24-page booklet. Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, electric guitar); Billy Cox (electric bass); Mitch Mitchell (drums). Producers: Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, John McDermott. Recorded live at The Isle Of Wight, England on August 30, 1970. Includes liner notes by Keith Altham. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This release includes a bonus DVD featuring a 118 minute concert film, behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with director Murray Lerner, and a memorabilia section. Producers: Janie Hendrix; Eddie Kramer; John McDermott. Liner Note Author: John McDermott. Originally released two weeks before what would have been Jimi Hendrix's 60th birthday, BLUE WILD ANGEL: JIMI HENDRIX LIVE AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT documents the last concert given by the legendary guitarist. Backed by Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Band of Gypsies bassist Billy Cox, Hendrix took the stage on August 30th, 1970 at around three in the morning. Despite being less than thrilled with playing at such a late hour, the Seattle native still delivered a dazzling set. Opening with an instrumental version of "God Save the Queen" meant to rouse the crowd, Hendrix put together a set that found him paying homage to the Beatles ("Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"), Bob Dylan ("All Along the Watchtower"), and his blues roots ("Red House"). Also preserved is much of Hendrix's between-song banter including an anti-war intro to a nearly 20-minute version of "Machine Gun" dedicated to soldiers fighting in Vietnam, which heaves, sighs, and roars through waves of distortion-laced improvisation. Other highlights include killer versions of less-iconic Hendrix gems including "Dolly Dagger" and "Hey Baby (New RisingSun)." SKU: 6539860

Diamonds And Pearls
Prince & New Power Generation: Prince(vocals, guitar); Tony M. (rap vocals); Rosie Gaines (vocals, keyboards, organ); Levi Seacer, Jr. (guitar, background vocals); Tommy Barbarella (keyboards); Sonny T. (bass, background vocals); Michael B. (drums); Kirk Johnson, Damon Dickson (percussion, background vocals). The Artist Formerly Known As Prince releases albums a bit like Stephen King writes books; with mind-boggling speed and an equal measure of royal success and passionate failure. On the groove- savvy DIAMONDS AND PEARLS, the diminutive one made an impressive rebound after the less-than-stellar GRAFFITI BRIDGE, with his most consistent and vibrant album since 1987's brilliant SIGN O' THE TIMES. Apparently aware of the powerful influence of groups like NWA, Public Enemy and Tribe Called Quest, Prince tried his hand at the harder genre, unleashing vocalist Tonio M. for cocky raps on songs like "Daddy Pop" and "Willing and Able." As always, Prince indulges happily in his erotic wanderings, with the guttural grooves and propositions of "Cream" and "Gett Off" leaving little to the imagination. However, it is the laid-back groove of the insightful and simply sung "Money Don't Matter" which is the quiet highlight of DIAMONDS AND PEARLS. A thoughtful reflection on disillusionment in love, business and politics, "Money Don't Matter" is perhaps Prince's most overlooked four-minute masterpiece. SKU: 4126498

Storm
Personnel includes: Vanessa-Mae (violin). Former classical violinist Vanessa-Mae follows her pop debut album, THE VIOLIN PLAYER, with another energetic marriage of classical music, pop, and techno beats. Most of the songs on STORM are lively instrumentals, wild remakes of classical pieces like Bach's "Partita in E," whose opening movement finds new life here as "Bach Street Preludes." In the linernotes, Vanessa-Mae offers this statement to potential critics: "Anyone who thinks this is blasphemy is unlikely to be in the good company of a genius such as the pianist/composer Rachmaninov, who performed his own 'untraditional' version of this violin piece on piano." Vanessa-Mae's whispery vocals have a delicate prettiness on 'I'm a Doun' and "Embrasse Moi (You Fly Me Up)." SKU: 5055715

Night In The Ruts
NIGHT IN THE RUTS has been digitally remastered using Sony's 20-Bit Digital Super Bit Mapping process. This reissue includes new deluxe packaging with original release liner notes, photos and artwork. At the time NIGHT IN THE RUTS was recorded, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry quit the band in 1979, citing personality conflicts with his long-time songwriting partner Steven Tyler. Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, keyboards); Jim Crespo, Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums). Additional personnel: Neil Thompson, Richard Supa (guitar); George Young (alto saxophone); Lou Marini (tenor saxophone); Lou Delgotto (baritone saxophone); Barry Rogers (trombone). Although 1979's NIGHT IN THE RUTS has a black andwhite album cover with all five members dressed as miners, in reality, Joe Perry left the band in the middle of recording due to personal differences. Brooklyn-born Jimmy Crespo was recruited to play on the remainder of RUTS and fill in Perry's shoes on tour. Throughout all the chaos, Perry managed to have his explosive guitar playing rise to the task. His interplay with Brad Whitford and an aggressive horn section make "Chiquita" one of the hardest rocking songs on this album. Elsewhere, Perry's skill on six-string found him playing the kind of slide guitar on "Cheesecake" that would make Duanne Allman jealous. The slide also came in handy during the slow blues of the novelty cover "Reefer Head Woman." Steven Tyler's lyrics also seemed unaffected by all the turmoil as he wrote songs touching on a variety of topics. "No Surprize" immortalizes Aerosmith's early days, "Mia" is a tribute to Tyler's newborn daughter, and "Three Mile Smile" is a song that captures the "no nukes" fervor of the time. SKU: 5068099

I Just Wasn't Made For These Times
I JUST WASN'T MADE FOR THESE TIMES is the soundtrack to the documentary film. Personnel: Brian Wilson (vocals, piano); Mark Goldenberg, Waddy Wachtel (guitar); David McMurray (saxophone, flute); Benmont Tench (piano, organ); James "Hutch" Hutchinson (bass); Jim Keltner (drums); Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson, Sweet Pea Atkinson, Sir Harry Bowens, Donald Ray Mitchell, Jeff Pescetto, Andrew Gold, Kip Lennon (background vocals). Recorded at Ocean Way, Hollywood California. Includes liner notes by Don Was. Brian Wilson transforms feelings of isolation and loneliness into music that approaches the divine. For those interested in checking out the man's much-vaunted genius, this soundtrack to a bio-documentary on Wilson is a fine place to start. Hearing these songs outside of their usual Beach Boys settings allows the listener to appreciate Wilson's gifts as songwriter and singer from a new perspective. Expertly recorded by veteran producer Don Was, these pristine versions are faithful to the originals (most notably in the succinct arrangements). The classic "Caroline No" retains its utter poignancy, gaining additional resonance from the 30-some years that have past since Wilson first sang this song of loss. He sounds energized by the spirited backup vocals of his daughters on the rocking "Do it Again," and he sings like an angel on "Love and Mercy." The oddly touching "Still I Dream of It," rendered here in a primitive home recording, contrasts with the otherwise smooth production, reminding the listener of Wilson's longtime insistence on coloringoutside the lines. The final song, almost a benediction, is "Til I Die," which certainly ranks among the most gorgeous songs in pop music history. Check it out here, in all its wondrous layers. SKU: 1002110

Essential Neil Diamond, The
Personnel includes: Neil Diamond (vocals, guitar); Barbara Streisand (vocals). Producers include: Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwhich, Tommy Cogbill, Tom Catalano, Neil Diamond. Compilation producers: Neil Diamond, Al Quaglieri. Engineers include: Phil Ramone, Brooks Arthur, Armin Steiner. Recorded between February 1966 and October 2001. Includes liner notes by David Wild. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). 2001 gave Neil Diamond fans plenty to cheer about. A new album of all-original studio material (THREE CHORD OPERA), a speaking and singing cameo in the bawdy film SAVING SILVERMAN, and the hit-packed anthology THE ESSENTIAL NEIL DIAMOND. This two-disc set chronologically traces the Brooklyn native's career path over the span of four decades. Packed with mono versions of classic '60s hits, Disc One alone would be a considerable canon for the average musician, thanks to songs like "Solitary Man," "Cracklin' Rosie," "Song Sung Blue," "Kentucky Woman," "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon," "Sweet Caroline," and "I'm A Believer." For Diamond, this was justa start, as he leapt to MOR god-like status via his duet with fellow Erasmus High alumnus Barbra Streisand ("You Don't Bring Me Flowers") and other sentimental sides including "Heartlight," "Love On The Rocks," "September Morn," and the patriotic anthem "America". A number of in-concert cuts quickly dispel any doubts that Diamond's skills are equally as impressive on stage as they are in the studio. One listen to live favorites like "He Aint' Heavy He's My Brother," "Shilo," and "Brooklyn Roads" cinches Diamond's legacy as an American musical treasure. SKU: 1071157

Ella Fitzgerald's Christmas
Personnel includes: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Ralph Carmichael (conductor). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California on July 17 & 18, 1967. Originally released on Capitol (#2509). Digitally remastered by Ron McMaster. Seemingly every singer at one time or another makes a Christmas album, and a large portion of them seem uninspired. ELLA FITZGERALD'S CHRISTMAS, happily, is not one such lackluster effort. The song selection consists entirely of traditional carols--"O Holy Night," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," etc.--instead of tedious novelties or boring original tunes. While the carols are performed with reverence, the arrangements are gentlyswinging, giving the proceedings an intimate, cozy feel suitable to a jazz-oriented Christmas album. Fitzgerald's voice is bell-like in its clarity, somewhat different from the soft-focus slurring she often favors, which only emphasizes how stunning her voice is. ELLA FITZGERALD'S CHRISTMAS is among the best Christmas albums of all time. SKU: 1047001

Chronicle [Digipak] [ECD] [Remastered]
Producers: Eddie Floyd, Steve Cropper, Booker T. Jones, Al Bell, Dale Warren, Tom Nixon. Digital remastering by Joe Tarantino (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Soul Singer Eddie Floyd had the mixed fortune of recording for the famed Stax/Volt label during the Memphis studio's heyday. On one hand, he wrote songs and recorded with some of the best R&B musicians that this country has ever produced. On the other, he had to compete in the marketplace with these very same giants. And Eddie, a sturdy singer and capable songwriter, was simply no match for the earth-scorching dynamics of Otis Redding or Sam and Dave. As CHRONICLES attests, Eddie Floyd may have been the marquee name of a lesser label. The sweet "I Never Found a Girl" rolls into aloping version of Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home to Me." His singing style bears more resemblance to Cooke's than it does to most of his more gritty Stax peers. "Knock on Wood," co-written with Stax guitarist Steve Cropper, is a bona fide classic. Evidence of its greatness lies in the number and diversity of performers--from The Pointer Sisters to Eric Clapton--who've revived it over the years. SKU: 1057794

Long Time Ago
Personnel: Kenny Wheeler (flugelhorn); Tony Faulkner (conductor); Derek Watkins,John Barclay, Henry Lowther, Ian Hamer (trumpet); Pete Beachill, Richard Edwards, Mark Nightingale (trombone); Sarah Williams, Dave Stewart (bass trombone); John Taylor (piano); John Paricelli (guitar). Recorded in September 1997 and January 1998. 1999's A LONG TIME AGO continues Kenny Wheeler's explorations with larger ensembles. His core trio (John Taylor on piano and John Parricelli on guitar, with Wheeler on flugelhorn), is augmented here with an eight-piece brass section. Wheeler's writing has always been the perfect fit for these regal arrangements, even on his bracing small combo works like GNU HIGH and DEER WAN. His compositional breadth is stunning, as he moves gracefully from the elegant balladry of the title suite to the classically themed "Going for Baroque." In this highly emotive set, the slow tempos Wheeler favors are rich with meditative layers. SKU: 5070532

Best Of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, The
Full title: The Best Of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Nick Cave &The Bad Seeds includes: Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Blixa Bargeld, Barry Adamson, Anita Lane, Edward Clayton-Jones, Hugo Race, Thomas Wydler, Kid Congo Powers, Roland Wolf, Martyn P. Casey, Conway Savage, Jim Sclavunos, Warren Ellis. Additional personnel: Polly Jean Harvey, Kylie Minogue (vocals). Given Nick Cave's history of great songs but uneven albums, THE BEST OF NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS truly lives up to its name, condensing his most intriguing songs into one excellent collection. Though it lacks a chronological sequence, the seemingly random track listing works surprisingly well, from the opening Van Morrison-gone-bad raucousness of "Deanna" to the final chaotic blast of "From Her to Eternity." Though the compilation highlights Cave's penchant for morbid narratives, it also includes disarmingly sincere ballads like "Into My Arms," "Are You the One That I've Been Waiting For?," and "Straight to You," with the Bad Seeds providing unusually subtle backing. Cave's trademark dark theatricality is still at the fore, however, on bleak yet driving songs such as "The Mercy Seat," "Tupelo," "Do You Love Me?," and, of course, the sinister classic "Red Right Hand." Producers include: Kristian Lundin, Max Martin, Rami, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Stephen Lipson. Engineers include: Kristian Lundin, Bo Reimer, George Spatta. MILLENNIUM was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year and for Best Pop Vocal Album. "I Want It That Way" was nominated for Record Of The Year and for Song Of The Year. "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The Backstreet Boys self-titled 1997 debut album endeared the group to millions of teens and pre-teens with its radio-friendly blend of pop harmonies and danceable beats. MILLENNIUM finds the Boys in the unenviable position of following up the mind-blowing success of the first album. Less ambitious artists might wither under such pressure, but the Backstreet Boys beat the dreaded sophomore slump in style. In the tradition of the debut, the album is a combination of romantic ballads guaranteed to make your little sister sob, and syncopated, eminently danceable, upbeat tunes. Throughout, it's the rich combination of the members' voices that creates the distinctive sound the group's legion of fans has grown to love. Most notably though, there is an added maturity in both the songs and the performances. It seems, regardless of their fans' fervent wishes, that even Backstreet Boys can't help but grow up. My Funny Valentine
Full title: My Funny Valentine: Chet Baker Plays And Sings For Lovers. Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Herb Geller (alto & tenor saxophones); Jack Montrose (tenor saxophone); Bud Shank (baritone saxophone, flute); Bob Gordon (baritone saxophone); Bob Brookmeyer (valve trombone); Corky Hale (harp); Pete Jolly, Russ Freeman (piano); Jimmy Bond, Red Mitchell, Joe Mondragon, Leroy Vinnegar, Bob Whitlock, Carson Smith (bass); Lawrence Marable, Bobby White, Larry Bunker, Peter Littman, Stan Levey, Shelly Manne, Bob Neel (drums). Producer: Richard Bock. Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded between July 24, 1953 and July 26, 1956. This collection of ballads sees Chet Baker at his vocal prime. A thoroughly touching album, MY FUNNY VALENTINE displays Baker's talent and fondness for love songs. Love's gain and loss is explored most poignantly on "Time After Time" and "I Fall in Love Too Easily." On the former, Baker's voice sounds innocent and pure as he croons, "so lucky to be the one you run to see, in the evening, when the day is through." Baker's trumpet playing isequally tender and amorous, despite the nonchalant and laid-back groove of the music. (Such qualities would later become the hallmarks of the so called "cool" style of jazz.) But on MY FUNNY VALENTINE, Baker is far from cool. Indeed, his singing and trumpet playing is never callous, thick-skinned or unfeeling. In contrast, his approach is warm and affectionate. In fact, Baker may very well be the greatest example of a modern day troubadour. SKU: 1003133

Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus (Cast Your Fate To The Wind)
Personnel: Vince Guaraldi (piano); Monte Budwig (bass); Colin Bailey (drums). Recorded at Station KQED, San Francisco, California in 1961-62. Originally released on Fantasy (8089). Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason. Today he's best known to most people as the man behind the classic PEANUTS music, but long before he jammed with Charlie Brown, Vince Guaraldi was making jazz inroads with his piano trio. As its title implies, JAZZ IMPRESSIONS OF BLACK ORPHEUS was Guaraldi's take on the groundbreaking Jobim score for the BLACK ORPHEUS film. While most of the album finds the prescient Guaraldi getting in on the ground floor of the U.S. bossa nova craze (though his take on these tunes doesn't feel particularly Brazilian), the key song here is in fact a Guaraldi original, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind." With its simple harmonic progression and strong, sunny melody, this unassuming jazz tune somehowmade its way to the top of the 1962 pop charts, a rare moment of true jazz crossover. SKU: 1003881

Stormcock
Widely considered Roy Harper's masterpiece, 1971's STORMCOCK downplays the mercurial quirkiness of Harper's earlier records in favor of a mature, sophisticated, but never stuffy or boring orchestrated folk-rock song cycle. Scored by David Bedford, the four lengthy songs mix folk, rock, and jazz elements into a subtle and understated blend not at all unlike an earthier, less spiritually preoccupied Van Morrison. The centerpiece is "The Same Old Rock," a bitter anti-religion diatribe supported by a blazing extended guitar solo by Jimmy Page. Elsewhere, the swaggering "One Man Rock and Roll Band," Harper's signature tune, and the tender, beautifully arranged "Me and My Woman" show the range of emotions Harper was capable of successfully conveying. Somehow, Roy Harper was never an enormous star, but he's clearly an enormous talent. SKU: 5054816
