In-a-gadda-da-vida (Deluxe Edition)
This deluxe version of IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA his been remastered and features two extra versions of the title song--a live version, which originally appeared on 1970 album LIVE, and the 7-inch single version, which edits the album version's 17 minutes and 5 seconds down to 2:52. It is packaged in a jewel box with a psychedelic, Multi-Image cover and a 36-page booklet. Iron Butterfly: Doug Ingle (vocals, organ, keyboards); Erik Brann (vocals, guitar); Lee Dorman (bass, vocals); Ron Bushy (drums). Recorded at Gold Star Studios, Hollywood, California; Ultra-Sonic Studios, Hempstead, New York; live at the Fillmore East, New York, New York. Includes original release liner notes by Ron Tepper and new liner notes by Rick Gagnon and Dave Gnerre. This is part of the Rhino Presents Atlantic & Atco Remasters series. Iron Butterfly was the American answer to the heavy riff-rock of British groups like Cream and Led Zeppelin, with a touch of Vanilla Fudge's organ-led theatricality and the Doors' mysterioso image. They will forever more be known for the 17-minute title track of this, their second album. "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (a poke at singer/organist Doug Ingle's gruff, John Kay-like delivery of "Inthe Garden of Eden") is built around one of the most memorable riffs of the '60s. It's filled out by long solos from all concerned, especially from drummer Ron Bushy, whose lengthy extemporizing provided the template for Big Rock Drum Solos for decades to come. The rest of the tunes reveal that Iron Butterfly did indeed possess some pop sensibility to leaven the heaviness; "Flowers and Beads" in particular is simultaneously a romantic '60s pop-rock ballad and a subtle but surprising swipe at flower power culture. Beatles Anthology Vol.3, The
THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY: 3 consists of demos and outtakes from THE WHITE ALBUM, LET IT BE and ABBEY ROAD. The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, bass, percussion); Paul McCartney (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, organ, bass, drums, percussion); George Harrison (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, percussion); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums, percussion). Producers: George Martin, The Beatles. Compilation producer: George Martin. Recorded between May 1968 and January 1970. Includes liner notes by Derek Taylor. If ANTHOLOGY: 2 was a study of how a Beatles songs came together, ANTHOLOGY: 3 is a study of how the Beatles themselves came apart. In the band's final phase, Paul McCartney was an unabashed pop balladeer, John Lennon a sneering pop humorist and experimenter, and Harrison aseparate songwriting force waiting to be unleashed. But the demos, rehearsals and outtakes that make up ANTHOLOGY: 3 are brilliant anyway. Lennon's early run-through of "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" is literally bits and pieces--three melodic ideas crammed together, not yet including what would become the song's chorus. There are acoustic demos of two McCartney songs; the gorgeous "Junk," which eventually showed up on his first solo album, and "The Long And Winding Road"--the same performance that appeared on LET IT BE, but without the strings that were added against his will. The real discoveries are Harrison's solo demos, including electric-guitar-and-vocal performances of "Something" and "All Things Must Pass." They nearly ache with beauty, and Harrison sings them as if discovering his voice for the first time. The finished versions pale next to these demos, which are among the highlights of the entire ANTHOLOGY series. SKU: 1030233

Smile
Personnel: Brian Wilson (vocals, keyboards); Jeffrey Foskett(vocals, guitar, hammer dulcimer); Probyn Gregory (vocals, guitar, whistle, brass); Scott Bennett (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Nick Walusko (vocals, guitar); Nelson Bragg (vocals, whistle, percussion); Darian Sahanaja (vocals, keyboards, percussion); Taylor Mills (vocals, sound effects); Stockholm Strings 'N' Horns (strings, horns); Paul Mertens (harmonica, woodwinds, saxophone); Dave Stone (acoustic bass guitar); Bob Lizik (bass guitar); Jim Hines (drums, percussion, sound effects, musical saw). Liner Note Author: David Leaf. Recording information: Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California (04/13/2004 - 04/17/2004). Between 1967 and 2004, the SMILE sessions were pretty much the Dead Sea Scrolls of pop music. Well documented as head Beach Boy Brian Wilson's answer to the Beatles' masterpiece SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (which was itself largely an answer to the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS), the tracks laid down in '67 for the projected SMILE album were the furthest afield anyone nominally operating under the pop/rock umbrella had ever ventured. Notoriously, intraband conflict (Mike Love, in particular, found the Wilson/Van Dyke Parks-penned conceptual work too far out) kept the record from being released. With several oceans' worth of water under the bridge, Wilson finally decided to finish the aborted project three-and-a-half decades later, adhering closely to the original blueprints. The results are as timelessly breathtaking as the original version must have been to the lucky few who first heard the initial tapes. With sterling support from his backing band the Wondermints, Wilson meticulously pieced together the conceptual, orchestral puzzle of SMILE into a rewarding, cohesive whole. Even decades down the line, it still sounds miles away from anything else in the world of popular music. A series of extended vignettes tied together with seamlessly arranged melodic latticework, SMILE is a masterpiece that incorporates the influences of gospel, ancient hymns, Charles Ives-style avant-garde experimentalism, barbershop-quartet harmony, Stephen Foster, and more, in a churning cauldron of lush Americana. Strings, harpsichord, and a wide palette of orchestral percussion are just as important as drums and guitars, though traces of the PET SOUNDS sonic stew can be heard here as well. A triumph of the will for Wilson and a victory for art and humanity, SMILE bears--among many other things--an extremely appropriate title. SKU: 6571970

Greatest Hits
Pop/soul legend Withers was one of the most important figures in '70s R&B, but most of his catalog remained shamefully unavailable throughout the '90s. Fans who followed Withers into the CD age (and those who weren't around during his glory days) were forced to content themselves with this short but definitive anthology. Withers' smooth '80s hit "Just The Two Of Us" kicks things off, but it's the '70s cuts that are the meat of his catalog. Withers' gift for marrying lyrical simplicity, soul, and an undefinable freshness of presentation sets his early work apart. "Use Me," with it's angular, funky clavinet line and unabashedly sexual lyrics, is primeWithers. The moody, minor-keyed lost-love lament of "Ain't No Sunshine" demonstrates his ability to articulate loss without resorting to sentimentality. The classic "Lean On Me" adds a touch of Gospel for an unpretentious anthem of emotional solidarity. Listening to this collection, one can't help but marvel at the fact that Withers' original albums have remained out of print for so many years. SKU: 4123553

Great Southern Trendkill
Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Dimebag Darrell (guitar, background vocals); Rex (bass, background vocals); Vinnie Paul (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Big Ross (keyboards);Seth Putnam (background vocals). Recorded at Chasin Jason Studios, Texas and Nothing Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana. "Suicide Note Pt. I" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Pantera's fourth major-label album is as dementedly metallic as anything the band has done. Over the years, this band has built a massive following with its adroit combination of guitar virtuosity that rivals Metallica's and an attitude as dark as Nine Inch Nails'. Philip Anselmo's vocals for THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRENDKILL were recorded at Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios, and they are positively demonic. They perfectly complement Dimebag Darrell's thunderous and dexterous guitar work. Vinnie Paul's ferocious, double-kick drumming is the final garnish on Pantera's infernal sound. Pantera may be the definitive modern metal band. SKU: 5060086

Scraps
NRBQ: Joey Spampinato (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass); Terry Adams (vocals, harmonica, piano, Clavinet); Frank Gadler (vocals); Al Anderson (acoustic & electric guitars); Tom Staley (drums). Additional personnel: Kenny Sheehan, Steve Ferguson (guitar); Donn Adams (trombone); Doug & Link Wray (background vocals). Recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, New York in July 1970 and in Mount Vernon, New York in December 1971. Includes liner notes by John DeAngelis. All tracks are digitally remastered. Album number three marks the first personnel shifts in NRBQ. Founding guitarist Steve Ferguson left and was replaced by Al Anderson (who stuck around for the next 23 years!). After the confident sprawl of their debut Columbia records, unsure of what to do with this hard-to-classify ensemble, paired them with Carl Perkins and subsequently dropped them both. SCRAPS was then, and remains now, an easy entrance into a band who make no secret for their love of any music that moves them. From rockabilly to Beatle-ish popto jump blues, swing and fractured commentaries--they find a common denominator in all of it. Nothing ever sounds out of place because this band has the skills and taste to make it all flow believably out of them. This is an album filled with wonderful songs like "Magnet," which has one of the warmest piano tones ever committed to tape. Other highlights include the front porch lilt of "Boys In The City" and the concert favorite "Howard Johnson's Got his Hojo Workin'" (which also affords a glimpse of another aspect of their endearing personality: humor). Blues To The Bone
Personnel include: Etta James (vocals); Brian Ray (guitar, slide guitar); Josh Sklair, Bobby Murray (guitar); John "Juke" Logan (harmonica); Mike Finnegan (piano); Sametto James (bass guitar); Donto James (drums). Producers: Etta James; Josh Sklar; Donto James; Sametto James. Liner Note Author: Lithoyfayne Pridgon. Duke Ellington spoke of certain things being "beyond category"--such a description suits singer Etta James. Since the 1950s, James has helped to set trends and adapted to them, applying herdeep, dignified voice to jazz, blues, Southern soul, and pop balladry. BLUES TO THE BONE is James's tribute to the blues, and it takes on well-worn genre standards and gives them a veritable new lease on life. James alternates between acoustic and electric renditions--"Lil' Red Rooster" becomes a country-tinged lamentation, and "Smokestack Lightnin'" gets a rare bare-bones treatment, just voice and acoustic guitar. "Got My Mojo Working" is a chugging, loping hunk of bravado, and "The Sky Is Crying" sounds like a storm about to break, James' voice the virtual definition of "soulful." Throughout, James sings the blues as one who has lived them, and her accompanists are a lean, mean, well-oiled machine, playing nary an excess note. SKU: 6562077

Europe 1972 (Live - Expanded And Remastered)
Disc 2 contains an untitled hidden track at the end of the disc. The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan (vocals, organ, harmonica); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Donna Godchaux (vocals); Keith Godchaux (piano); Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Engineers: Bob Matthews, Betty Cantor, The Grateful Dead. Recorded live in Europe by Alembic Sound using a 16-track tape recorder. When the band returned to the United States, it rebuilt its entire stage at Alembic Studios for the purpose of overdubbing. Each song was played back over the same equipment that it was originally performed on, recreating the original ambience, while the band added additional instrumental and vocal tracks. Originally a three-LP set, this live document of the band at their largest (an octet if you count non-performing lyricist/official member Robert Hunter) is a well-recorded portrait of one of the Dead's finest eras. The Chick Corea-channeled-through-Floyd Cramer piano of Keith Godchaux had already begun to take the Dead to new improvisational heights, but diehard bluesman Pigpen was still representing the group's roots with his harmonica and gritty vocals. Whether you favor the jamming side of the Dead or their superior songcraft, Europe '72 offers a wealth of riches. "Morning Dew," "Truckin'" and others are presented in epic versions, spotlighting the musicians in all their free-form glory. Some ofthe band's finest compositions are here, as well, from "Jack Straw" to "Tennesee Jed," exemplifying the Dead's gift for matching lyric with melody. SKU: 1080130

Rosemary Lane [Remastered]
One of British folk guitarist Bert Jansch's best-loved albums, 1971's ROSEMARY was previously only available onCD paired with 1968's BIRTHDAY BLUES. Reissued in 1996 with improved fidelity and the LP's lovely original cover art, ROSEMARY LANE sounds better than ever. The album was recorded at home and primarily features solo performances, as opposed to the small-group arrangements Jansch had been using on his previous albums and in the group The Pentangle. ROSEMARY LANE has a broad emotional palette and a respect for Jansch's folk roots, evidenced by his recordings of the traditional "Rosemary Lane," "Reynardine," and "Sylvie" and by an adaptation of Robert Johnson's "Alman." Of the originals, "Tell Me What Is True Love?" and "M'Lady Nancy" are the highlights, but the whole of ROSEMARY LANE is nothing short of divine. SKU: 1069174

Additional personnel includes: Craig Pruess (conductor, arranger); Gloria Flores (vocals); Gavyn Wright (strings); Pete Woodroffe (piano, keyboards); Av Singh (dohl); Brad Buxer, Bobby Brooks, Hugh Drumm, Ger McDonnell (programming). Recorded in Spain and Fine Bow Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland. With '80s hard rock all but dead and gone by the mid-'90s, Def Leppard rethought their approach and resurfaced with 1996's SLANG. The indulgences that rocketed Leppard to the top of the chartsa decade earlier were stripped away as the veteran band attempted to stay in step with the new alternative rock acts. While SLANG didn't hit the charts as hard as such past classics as PYROMANIA and HYSTERIA, it contained its share of highlights, namely "Work it Out," "All I Want is Everything," and "Blood Runs Cold." The group would revisit their original sound with their next release, 1999's EUPHORIA. SKU: 1001914

Bridges To Babylon
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, keyboards, shaker); Keith Richards (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano); Ronnie Wood (electric, slide & baritone guitars, pedal steel, dobro); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel includes: Waddy Wachtel (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Danny Saber (guitar, Clavinet, keyboards, bass); Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone); Blondie Chaplin (piano, bass, percussion, background vocals); Benmont Tench (piano, Hammond B-3 & C-3 organs, keyboards); Don Was (Wurlitzer piano, keyboards, bass); Billy Preston (Hammond B-3 organ); Darryl Jones, Doug Wimbush (bass, background vocals); Me'Shell Ndegeocello (bass); Jim Keltner (percussion, background vocals). Producers include: The Glimmer Twins, Don Was, The Dust Brothers. Engineers include: Rob Fraboni, Ed Cherney, Jim Scott. BRIDGES TO BABYLON was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Rock Album. "Anybody Seen My Baby?" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Kicking off with Charlie Watt's whip-smart timekeeping, BRIDGES TO BABYLON finds the Rolling Stones swaggering towards the millenium with a record that confidently asserts that rock & roll isfar from a young person's game. Don Was returns behind the boards, and joining him at Mick Jagger's behest are uber-technophiles The Dust Brothers. Rather than leaping headlong onto an ill-fitting bandwagon, The Stones wisely gild their rock & roll lily with subtle electronic nuances. The sampled rap tossed into the the noirish mood of "Anybody Seen My My Baby?" and the swooshing laser sounds of "Might As Well Get Juiced" are present-day window dressing for a legacy deeply rooted in rhythm and blues. The Stones stop long enough to cleverly acknowledge their past by dropping a harp playing the main riff of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" into the mid-tempo "Out Of Control" and using "Saint Of Me" to revel in their bad-boy persona. Keith Richards remains the soul of the Stones. His riffing and his endearing rasp continue to stand out, and his crooning on "You Don't Have To Mean It" demonstrates his deep love of reggae. The emotive one-two punch of "Thief In The Night" and "How Can I Stop" shows Keef to be a closet romantic camouflaged by a bad-ass strut. SKU: 1003207

Darling Corey & Goofing Off Suite
2 LPs on 1 CD: DARLING COREY (1950)/GOOFING-OFF SUITE (1955). Producer: Moses Asch. Reissue producers: Anthony Seeger, Matt Walters. Recorded in 1950. Includes liner notes by Alan Lomax, Pete Seeger & Anthony Seeger. Combined on one CD in 1993 after decades of near-total obscurity, DARLINGCOREY and GOOFING-OFF SUITE were originally released by Folkways Records in the short-lived 10" LP format. 1950's DARLING COREY is one of Seeger's most purely musicological recordings, collecting a number of traditional Appalachian and Southern folk melodies and songs, played in the traditional style. The rollicking "Skillet Good and Greasy" and the wistful title track are standouts, as is the instrumental showcase "Four Banjo Pieces." In contrast, 1955's GOOFING-OFF SUITE finds Seeger in a more progressive mood, creating world music decades before that term was invented by combining traditional guitar and banjo with themes from Bach, Beethoven, and the sort of Russian folk tunes that inspired Tchaikovsky. His acoustic variations on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" are particularly impressive. Together, these two albums showcase Seeger's immense range. SKU: 5082843

Mutations
Personnel: Beck Hansen (vocals, guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, piano, synthesizer, glockenspiel); Smokey Hormel (acoustic & electric guitars, percussion, quica, background vocals); Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar); Warren Klein (sitar, tamboura); David Campbell (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); David Ralicke (flute, trombone);Elliot Caine (trumpet); Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (acoustic & electric pianos, organ, harpsichord, keyboards, synthesizer, percussion); Justin Meldal-Johnsen (acoustic & electric basses, percussion, background vocals); Joey Waronker (drums, percussion); Fred Sesliano (esraj). Recorded at Ocean Way Studios, Hollywood, California from March 19 to April 3, 1998. MUTATIONS won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. With ODELAY, Beck's second helping of sampladelic, hip-hop inflected alt-pop, Beck took his white-kid-with-a-sampler schtick as far as it could go (which in his capable hands, was farther than anyone else could have taken it). An artist of commendable taste and natural instinct, he followed it up by going the only route possible--straight-ahead singer/songwriter pop/rock. That's not to say this genre-hopper doesn't take a few interesting left turns, as on the Brazilian-flavored "Tropicalia," but gone are the hip-hop beats, sampled backdrops and semi-raps of the past. In their place are solid, inventive, pop/rock arrangements played by Beck's regular touring band. And the irrepressible Mr. Hansen inserts more melody into the songs here than anyone would have thought likely; he's just plain singing more. Though there's no lack of humor inherent in MUTATIONS, Beck's dropped the off-handed jokiness of his previous work as well, coming as close to earnestness as a postmodernist like him can. The amazing thing (and the testament to his enduring artistic worth) is that he pulls it off so well. In its own way, MUTATIONS is every bit as rewarding as MELLOW GOLD or ODELAY. SKU: 1001396

Swingin' Miss D
Personnel: Dinah Washington (vocals). Quincy Jones's Orchestra: Quincy Jones (conductor); Hal McKusick (alto saxophone, flute); Anthony Ortega (alto saxophone); Jerome Richardson, Lucky Thompson (tenor saxophone); Danny Bank (baritone saxophone); Don Elliott (trumpet, mellophone, vibraphone, xylophone, bongo); Bernie Glow, Jimmy Maxwell, Ernie Royal, Doc Severinsen, Charlie Shavers, Clark Terry, Nick Travis, Joe Wilder (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland, Urbie Green, Quentin Jackson (trombone); Tommy Mitchell (bass trombone); Clarence "Sleepy" Anderson (piano); Barry Galbraith (guitar); Milt Hinton (bass); Jimmy Crawford, Osie Johnson (drums). Includes liner notes by Brian Priestly & John Wilson. This is part of Verve's Master Edition series. Dinah Washington had everything you could ask for in a singer--pitch, phrasing, diction, savvy, romanticism, humor, a voice golden or guttural, you name it. She was utterly comfortable in whatever style was called for that day, whether jazz, R&B, blues or pop. Her versatility is readily apparent on the series of classy "jazz" albums she recorded for Emarcy/Mercury from 1954 through 1959, till the enormous success of "What A Difference A Day Made" inspiredMercury to try to force her into a purely hit-making mold. THE SWINGIN' MISS "D" was recorded in 1956 with 23-year-old Quincy Jones arranging. Jones was already an experienced hand with Dinah, since he wrote the charts for her lyrical FOR THOSE IN LOVE in 1954. As the full title states, MISS "D" is an altogether different affair--upbeat and crisply arranged, with Washington turning in one exhilarating tour de force performance after another. Expectedly, there are also exquisite ballad performances here like "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," "I'll Close My Eyes" and the newly-written "Never Let Me Go." But it's the hard-driving charts (surperbly restored in a Verve Master Edition) that show Miss D to such advantage on this particular day. SKU: 5065067

Generation Coming
Third World: William "Bunny Rugs" Clarke (vocals, guitar); Stephen "Cat" Coore (guitar, cello, background vocals); Rupert Bent Jr. (guitar, keyboards); LeRoy "Baarbe" Romans (flute, keyboards); Richard "Bass" Daley (bass); Tony "Ruption" Williams (drums). Additional personnel: Shaggy, Bounty Killer. Engineers include: Noel Hearne, Rupert Bent, Dalkeith "Grizzly" Shaw. Recorded at Ocean Drive Recording Studio, Miami, Florida; Tuff Gong Recording Studio, Sonic Sound Studios, and Grafton Studios,Kingston, Jamaica. GENERATION COMING was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. When the pop-reggae crossover music of Third World made its initial splash in the '80s, most people focused on the pop side of the group's aesthetic. To do so is to overlook the serious reggae chops Third World possesses. Even in the case of 1999's GENERATION COMING, it's likely that the band's covers of pop tunes will garner much more attention than its equally worthy straight reggae offerings. The thing is that Third World works the crossover trick with such originality that it's hard to ignore. Third World's version of the Police's "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" neatly turns the tables on pop cultural history by putting a reggae spin on the music of the world's most famous reggae-inspired rock band. Similarly, the Caribbean lilt added to Philly soul classic "Love Train" casts the R&B chestnut in a new light. And Randy Newman's "Baltimore" surely wins the prize as the song least likely to be covered by a reggae group. As usual, while purists may find that Third World strays too far from reggae's boundaries, the band's agreeable blend of influences is the kind of sound that might change the minds of those who think they don't like reggae. Nigga Please
Personnel: Ol' Dirty Bastard, 12 O'Clock LA the Darkman, Shorty Shit Stain PA, Kelis, Chris Rock (vocals); Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo (various instruments); Dominique Maybank (guitar, bass); Big Baby (horns); Mike "Suga" Allen (drums). Producers: RZA, Irv Gotti, Flava Hood's Big Baby, The Neptunes. Engineers include: Brian Stanley, Pat Viala, Kevin Thomas. Ol' Dirty Bastard, perhaps the most well-known member of Staten Island's Wu-Tang Clan, returns with the first Wu masterpiece since Wu-Tang's 1997 double-LP WU-TANG FOREVER. Whether singing, albeit slightly off-key, on the bluesy "Good Morning Heartache" or randomly shouting-out on "I Can't Wait," ODB bounces between personas and genres like a schizophrenic clown. The results, while not quite as cohesive as some efforts by his peers, are still some of the most rewarding. Although many expected a more polished product after recent guest appearances on hits such as Pras' "Ghetto Superstar" and Mariah Carey's "Fantasy," ODB sets the record straight on the first track, "Recognize," with the statement "This ain't no commercial song." The producers, including Wuleader RZA and Irv Gotti, feed ODB's subterranean sound with kinetic tracks that sample unsuspected nuggets of funk such as the "Theme From T.J. Hooker." Even though ODB occasionally can confuse the listener by attacking white rappers on one song then claiming to both black and white on the next, these contradictions are the foundation of his style. He is both madman and jester, simultaneously the most scary and beloved of the Wu Tang Clan. N***A PLEASE, like ODB, is unpredictable from start to finish. SKU: 5059804

Now You Has Jazz (Louis Armstrong At MGM - Soundtrack Anthology)
Personnel includes: Louis Armstrong (vocal, trumpet); Jack Teargarden, Bing Crosby (vocals). Compilation producers: George Feltenstein, Bradley Flanagan. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald. Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics, Los Angeles, California). For all of Louis Armstrong's musical genius and his importance as a jazz innovator, his popularity as an entertainer was just as much a part of who he was. Given his personality and his presence, the unmistakable sound of his voice, and his sheer joy in playing to the audience, it's only natural that Hollywood came calling. And it hardly seems odd that in more than 30 films, he rarely played anyone other than himself. NOW YOU HAS JAZZ is a collection of music Armstrong performed in five MGM musicals between 1943 and 1965. It includes not only memorableperformances such as HIGH SOCIETY CALYPSO from the Cole Porter-penned musical, but also outtakes that didn't make the final cut, as in the case of AIN'T IT THE TRUTH from THE STRIP, with Armstrong laughing wickedly through the lyrics before kicking off a cut-time trumpet solo. While it's apparent that Armstrong was often cast in these films as something of a gold-plated minstrel, his performances were completely his own. Matters of exploitation aside, he surely gained as much from his film career as producers did from his participation. Indeed, NOW YOU HAS JAZZ demonstrates that the relationship was a perfect match. Best Of Studio One Vol.3, The
Full title: Best Of Studio One Vol. 3: Downbeat The Ruler: Killer Instrumentals. The BEST OF STUDIO ONE series chronicles the influential role record producer C.S. "Coxsone" Dodd and his recording studio, Studio One, had on popular Jamaican music. Producer: C.S. Dodd. Compilation producer: Chris Wilson. Recorded at Studio One, Kingston, Jamaica. Includes liner notes by Chris Itone. In the beginning, there was Studio One. This aptly named building, the empire of legendary producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, was the birthplace of Jamaica's homegrown pop music industry. Lee "Scratch" Perry, Bob Marley, and just about everyone who was involved inthe evolution of ska into rock steady (and later into reggae) that changed the face of Afro-Caribbean pop spent at least a brief time learning his craft at Dodd's feet. Not everyone went on to superstardom, of course, which makes the three-volume BEST OF STUDIO ONE series that much more interesting. Whereas DOWNBEAT THE RULER's contains a track apiece by ska legends Jackie Mitoo and Tommy McCook among its 12 offerings, the bulk of this collection of pumping ska instrumentals is devoted to such unfairly neglected stalwarts as Sound Dimension and Downbeat Specialist. The rhythms are speedy, the horns are cooking, and it's impossible not to dance, making this a near-perfect ska compilation. SKU: 4112421

Fifty Foot Hose: Larry Evans (vocals, guitar);Nancy Blossom (vocals); David Blossom (guitar, piano); Terry Hansley (bass); Kim Kimsey (drums); Cork Marcheschi (electronic effects). In the annals of '60s psychedelia, Fifty Foot Hose is a name that's seldom mentioned. However, the group's lone '60s release CAULDRON, is one of the most visionary slabs of weirdness to emerge from the West Coast during the peace-and-love era. The sound is roughly equivalent to early Jefferson Airplane with Karlheinz Stockhausen sitting in on electronics. Cork Marcheschi operated a sea of homemade electronic instruments, and his background in "serious" electronic music sidesteps any feeling of gimmickry. Instead, the electronics take the band's trippy, psychedelic rock to another level, often closer to avant garde art music than to the Bay Area sound. Nancy Blossom's strong vocal presence and husband David Blossom's freaky guitar style enliven songs that mix rock with '60s weirdness and pure electronic invention, making CAULDRON one of the most important "rock" albums of the late '60s. These 18 songs were released originally by a group of artists that includes Delroy Wilson, Lord Brynner, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Rita Marley, Ken Boothe, and others. The selections date from the earliest years of Studio One, and thereare previously unreleased numbers, as well as rarities by The Wailers themselves. This collection is a fine companion to the Bob Marley & The Wailers DESTINY collection, which features selections released under the band's own name from the same era. This historic material sounds as fresh and exuberant as it did on the day it was recorded. SKU: 5001038

All tracks have been digitally remastered. Relishing the artistic freedom afforded by the success of WHAT'S GOING ON, Marvin Gaye recorded this sultry paean to sex. Where its predecessor relied on complex arrangements, the straightforward sound of LET'S GET IT ON focused attention on its tight rhythms, strong melodies and Gaye's expressive singing. Either celebratory, as on the explicit title track, or reflective ("Distant Lover"), he explores a range of emotions withequal ease and intensity. Seductive sound matches seductive lyrics and attitudes at a time when Al Green, Barry White and Isaac Hayes laid claim to the "lover man" sobriquet. LET'S GET IT ON showed Marvin Gaye to be its undoubted master. SKU: 1065772
