McLemore Avenue
Booker T. & The MG's: Booker T. Jones (keyboards); Steve Cropper (guitar); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson, Jr (drums). Engineers: Ron Capone, Gordon Rudd, Rik Pekkonen. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Let it never be said that Booker T. and the MG's were conceptually timid. McLEMORE AVENUE, released in1970, is a tribute to/cover of the Beatles' ABBEY ROAD, right down to the cover art featuring the MG's crossing McLemore Ave. (the location of Stax Studios) in the fashion of John, Paul, George and Ringo. The MG's recording takes tracks from the Beatles original (only "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," "Oh Darling!" and "Octopus's Garden" are absent), rearranges and threads them together in three distinct medleys. The treatments are generally faithful to the originals, though the occasional stylistic deviation, such as the lounge boogie of "Here Comes the Sun," keeps things interesting. The band fares best on the funkier numbers such as "I Want You" and "Come Together," while Booker T.'s keyboards nicely round out the "orchestral" feel of songs such as "Sun King." Thirty years of Beatles covers in elevators and department stores the world over may have made it difficult to listen to instrumental versions of "Something" without cringing, but the playing here is outstanding as always, and the disc/concept remains of interest to Beatles collectors and serious MG's fans alike. Heart Of Chicago 1967-1997, The
THE HEART OF CHICAGO 1967-1997 is acollection of Chicago's hits with two new tracks, "Here In My Heart" and "The Only One." Producers: James William Guercio, Roy Bittan, David Foster, Ron Nevison, Chas Sandford, Phil Ramone. The title of this retrospective speaks for itself. Here are the romantic classics from the group whose pioneering mix of rock, smooth harmonies and distinctive horn arrangements has become as familiar as butter and toast. The songs, ranging from 1970's "Make Me Smile" to 1988's "Look Away," are not arranged chronologically, which makes for interesting juxtapositions, such as the one between 1971's lightly funky "Beginnings," with its classic "whoa, whoa, whoa" chorus, and 1982's irresistibly sentimental "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" ("After all that we've been through/I will make it up to you/I promise to"). Thirteen of the 15 songs on THE HEART OF CHICAGO have been digitally remastered, and all provide an opportunity to revisit some of the best offerings from one of history's most successful bands. Rubycon
Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese (guitar, Mellotron, organ, synthesizer, gong); Peter Baumann (piano, electric piano, prepared piano, organ, synthesizer); Chris Franke (prepared piano, organ, synthesizer, gong). Recorded at The Manor, Shipton On Cherwell, England in January 1975. RUBYCON is an undisputed classic in the vast Tangerine Dream canon, referenced by many of the new electronica generation. But at the time of its creation, Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, and Peter Baumann were themselves young men experimenting with technology. RUBYCON is split into two sections, both of which offer the band's trademark mix of ululating sequencers, ghostly synthetic twilight, and mysterious electronic effects. Part One begins with intergalactic whispers, before coalescing into one of the Dream's most uniquely designed rhythm patterns. Part Two moves the sequencers' BPMs up a notch, matching them with whistling electronics and howling, deep spaceatmospheres. Truly astonishing stuff, and essential to anyone interested in the advancement of both electronic music and Krautrock in general. SKU: 1006983

Honkin' On Bobo
Aerosmith's first studio album since 2001's 'Just Push Play' sees the band's direction head back to their 1970's origin via the reintroduction of producer Jack Douglas who last worked with the band on their 1977 album 'Walk The Line'. On this(their 17th studio album) the legendary rock 'n roll mainstays not only present new material but also reinterpret classic blues tracks by such artists as Muddy Waters and Blind Willie McTell. Charlatans, The
The Charlatans U.K.: Tim Burgess (vocals); Mark Collins (guitar); Rob Collins (Clavinet, Hammond B-3 organ, Wurlitzer, piano, background vocals); Martin Blunt (bass); Jon Brookes (drums). Additional personnel: Dave Charles (percussion); Steve Hillage (programming). Producers: The Charlatans U.K., Dave Charles, Steve Hillage. The Charlatans' star rose quickly and then stalled; they never really fit comfortably into the same mold that gave us the Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses, or The Smiths. Dogged by misfortune, self inflicted and otherwise, they ultimately just didn't possess the cachet of a late'80s 'Manchester band.' However, their eponymously titled fourth album brought them to a hitherto unachieved level of prominence--almost, but not quite, turning them into international stars. The Charlatans are at their most Stones-like here, evoking Primal Scream and other rockier British dance-influenced acts. Highlights include the great "Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over," "Just Lookin'," and "Toothache." Full of great hooks and lyrically persuasive, this album is recommended to anyone with an interest in the best of '90s British pop. SKU: 1003767

Louis Armstrong And King Oliver
Personnel: Louis Armstrong (cornet); Alberta Hunter, Clarence Todd (vocals); Stump Evans (C-melody saxophone); Charlie Johnson (bass saxophone); King Oliver (cornet); Charlie Irvis, Honore Dutrey, Aaron Thompson (trombone); Sidney Bechet (soprano saxophone, clarinet); Buster Bailey, Johnny Dodds (clarinet); Lil Hardin Armstrong (piano); Buddy Christian, Johnny St. Cyr, Bill Johnson (banjo); Baby Dodds (drums). Recorded between 1923 & 1925. Includes original liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). The recordings on LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND KING OLIVER are not only Satchmo's earliest sides but represent what many consider jazz's first recorded masterpieces. Cut in 1923 on extremely primitive recording equipment, the CD's first 18 tracks are by King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, a group that Oliver founded in Chicago several years after leaving his native New Orleans. Featuring Oliver and his protege, the 22-year-old Armstrong, on dual cornets, the group swings ferociously and plays together so well that their interplay often borders on the telepathic. While at this early stage of Louis Armstrong's career his playing was little more than a carbon copy of his mentor's, this fact works to the music's advantage, as the two musicians' simultaneous improvised solos are so in sync that they often sound completely arranged. These historic tracks also include standout playing from the great Johnny Dodds on clarinet and Lil Hardin Armstrong (Louis Armstrong's future wife) on piano, and suprisingly modern sounding C-Melody saxwork from Stump Evans. The remainder of the disc's tracks are 1924 recordings by The Red Onion Jazz Babies, an Armstrong-led group which included the legendary Sidney Bechet on clarinet and tenor sax. SKU: 1042338

Closing Time
Personnel includes: Tom Waits (vocals, piano); Jesse Ehrlich (cello); Tony Terran (trumpet); Arni Egilsson (bass); Johnny Seiter (drums). Recorded at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California. The 1973 album that introduced a young singer-songwriter to the world at large is a far cry from the wonderfully twisted sonic lanscape that would define SWORDFISHTROMBONES a decade later. The Waits of CLOSING TIME was a barroom balladeer too, but one who rarely strayed from the early-'70s folk-rock paradigm (hell, the Eagles covered the opener "Ol' '55"). The arrangements are straightforward, piano-based affairs that present the songs with a minimum of fuss. Waits voice isn't the deep, gravelly instrument that would bellow its way through RAIN DOGS, but a smoky, measured one, devoid of artifice. Accordingly, the song structures are simpler, and the best ("Martha," "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You") attain a timeless feel. For all his relative conventionality on this debut though, Waits is still closer in spirit to the great Americansongwriters of the '40s than any '70s California rocker. SKU: 5048755

Dubnobasswithmyheadman
Underworld: Karl Hyde, Darren Emerson, Rick Smith. After a spotty and rather undefined beginning in the hedonistic '80s, the older and wiser Rick Smith and Karl Hyde teamed up with wunderkind DJ Darren Emerson to produce dubnobasswithmyheadman. After a successful 1993 single under the name Lemon Interrupt, the trio returned to the Underworld name that Smith and Hyde used during their UNDERNEATH THE RADAR days on Sire records. The songs feature Hyde's lyrics over alternatively throbbing and shuffling beats and melodies, peppered with the occasional guitar line. Song structures start from almost nothing, building to towering intensity with the drop-dead breaks and crescendos that have come to define the group's sound. Highly processed vocals and meandering rhythm tracks saturated with reverb ("Mmm, Skyscraper I Love You," "Dirty Epic") coexist with the low-end throb of "River of Bass,"the ecstatic "Spoonman," and "Cowgirl"--a track that found its way onto dozens of mix compilations all over England. King
Belly: Tanya Donelly (vocals, guitar), Thomas Gorman (guitar, piano), Gail Greenwood (bass, vocals), Christopher Gorman (drums, percussion). Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas. At one point, Tanya Donnelly seemed destined to play the role of the endearing little sister of alternative rock. Starting her career in the early '80s with school chum Kristin Hersh's Throwing Muses, she added a supportive guitar tothe Muses' frenetic sound. When she left that band in 1990, Donnelly contributed to business pal Kim Deal's then side project, the Breeders' 1990 debut. Two years later she teamed up with Christopher and Tim Gorman to finally form her own band, Belly. Now with the addition of bassist Gail Greenwood, Belly's sophomore release--entitled KING--finds both band and Donnelly taking the front seat. KING is a working exercise of everything Donnelly learned over the years. Echoes of Hersh's polarities (ethereal verses with ricocheting breaks) and hints of Deal's hankering for looming guitar passages dot KING's landscape. However, KING is Donnelly's show. While she writes songs with other Belly members, it's Donnelly's quirky time signatures and cryptic observations that shine through clearest. "Red" neatly captures Belly's elegance. Shimmering, graceful chords beckon on a lurching bridge where Donnelly and Greenwood alternately yelp and coo chewy-center lyrics like "mouth like Venus/mountain like Vesuvius." KING brings Donnelly's pop leanings to light, while keeping her alternative rock foundations in focus. Belly is reaching its potential, KING proves it. SKU: 1059224

One More Car One More Rider (Live/+DVD) [ECD]
Personnel includes: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); David Sancious (guitar, keyboards); Andy Fairweather Low (guitar, background vocals); Greg Phillinganes, Billy Preston (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Nathan East (bass, background vocals); Steve Gadd (drums). When Eric Clapton hit the road in support of 2001's REPTILE, rumors abounded that this would be his last tour. If this hearsay turns out to be true, take consolation in the fact that the live 2-CD ONE MORE CAR, ONE MORE RIDER serves as a nifty souvenir from that particular string of shows. Benefiting from a crystal clear sound mix and a stellar back-up group whose members include keyboardists David Sancious and Billy Preston, Slowhand delivers a heavy mix of his most recent forays into contemporary adult pop and certain classic rock warhorses thatwould have benefited from early retirement. One result is Clapton doing a fine job wielding an acoustic guitar and shifting gears from laying into the Big Bill Broonzy stomper "Key To The Highway" to making like Gilberto Gil on the bossa-nova flavored instrumental "Reptile." Although the version of "Badge" included here shines and a different arrangement of "Cocaine" breathes some life into this Clapton standard, the umpteenth version of "Layla" would have been better substituted by a more obscure cut off the same album. Otherwise, Clapton's playing remains top-notch and spurs hopes that his days on the road haven't come to an end. SKU: 1077044

1984 [Remastered]
Van Halen: David Lee Roth (vocals); Eddie Van Halen (guitar, keyboards); Michael Anthony (bass, background vocals); Alex Van Halen (drums, percussion, background vocals). Recorded at 5150 Studios, Hollywood, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This was vocalist David Lee Roth's final record for the band and as such, the album stands as a testament of worth somewhere between high camp and high class. Eddie VanHalen's venerable, rolling guitar pulled immaculately into place, while his new-found love of the keyboard gave them their first international smash with "Jump." However, it is the quite demented rush of "Panama," and the hilarious "Hot For Teacher," with Roth exuding a droll litany of school-yard fantasies over a thunderous Alex Van Halen backbeat, that gives ultimate credence to the rock 'n' roll party that was the Roth/Van Halen partnership. Songs From An American Movie Vol.2 (Good Time For A Bad Attitude) [PA]
Full title: Songs From AnAmerican Movie Vol. 2: Good Times For A Bad Attitude. Everclear: Art Alexakis (vocals, guitar); Craig Montoya (vocals, bass); Greg Eklund (vocals, drums). Engineers: Brad Cook, Dan Marnien, Neal Avron. Recorded at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California. Volume One, released earlier in 2000, was Everclear's sunniest, most pop-oriented, and instrumentally varied album. Volume Two, on the other hand, is closer to alt-rock business as usual, a heavy guitar album with leader Art Alexakis as lyrically cheesed-off as ever (and brilliantly so--not for nothing did Randy Newman announce that Alexakis was his current fave songwriter). Put the two halves together and what do you have Well, a modern equivalent of the Beatles White Album isn't as far-fetched as it might seem. This is a band clearly at the top of its game. Highlights include the ironic, funny, and infectiously catchy "Rock Star" ("I want a girlfriend who doesn't drink beer," Alexakis notes in his list of reasons for wanting to be one), the angsty "When it All Goes Wrong Again," and "Out of My Depth," a rousing power-chord laden ode to emotional ambiguity. Wolf, The [ECD]
Personnel: Andrew W.K. (vocals, piano, keyboards); Jimmy Coup, Frank Werner, Erik Payne (guitar); Gregg Roberts (bass); Donald Tardy (drums). Producers: Andrew W.K., Scott Humphrey, John Fields. Recorded at Guardian Sound, Heaven Studios, New York, New York and Scream Studios, Los Angeles, California. On his second full-length album, Andrew W.K. is armed with more pounding piano melodies, blazing metal riffs, and an arsenal of exclamation points! On THE WOLF, the ever-enthusiastic Andrew Wilkes-Krier returns to keep the party going, kicking things off with the Queen-on-speed majesty of "Victory Strikes Again." And lest you forget his words of wisdom from I GET WET's "Party Hard," W.K. offers up "Long Live the Party," reminding those with short memories that "You cannot kill the party!" But it's not all fun and games with the white-jeaned one...well, mostly it is, but there's a slightly more introspective tone that carries tunes such as "Tear It Up," "Never Let Down," and "The End of Our Lives." In any case, the ridiculously catchy tunes sink in quickly, with W.K. coming off like some kindof hard rock motivational speaker. SKU: 1087042

Irv Gotti Presents The Inc [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Performers include: Ja Rule, Ashanti, Caddillac Tah, Charli Baltimore, Black Child, Vita, CMC. The debut album by producer/Svengali Irv Gotti is a murderous collection of gangsta rap. It packs some heat courtesy of a host of guest appearances by, among others, the legendary polyrhythmic rhymer Ja Rule, and the less well-known but no less talented bad-girl rapper Charli Baltimore, whose appearance on "No One Does It Better" is full of the rough-edged, switchblade-sharp phrasing that marks a skilled gangsta practitioner. Helped by an intriguing mix of new and seasoned talent, including Ashanti and one Jennifer Lopez, Gotti takes us on a wild ride through the seamy underbelly of an already dangerous genre, with guest artistes such as Black Child on"Ride Wit Us" and "O.G." providing a somber soundtrack. The quality of tracks here is such that it seems like Gotti's under constant self-inflicted pressure to better himself. "1 Hearse, 2 Suburbans" is a likely contender for the baddest entry, though in its detached yet intimate portrayal of thug life the Ja Rule-assisted "Gangstafied" is the most well rounded cut here. IRV GOTTI PRESENTS THE INC is proof positive that, if he wants it, a career on the other side of the mixing desk is Gotti's for the taking. SKU: 1074205

Generation Swine (Expanded) [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include the "Afraid" video. Motley Crue: Nikki Sixx (vocals, bass); Tommy Lee (vocals, drums); Vince Neil (vocals); Mick Mars (guitar). Additional personnel:Scott Humphrey (vocals); David Darling (guitar); Suzie Katayama (cello); David Paich (piano, harpsichord). Includes comments by Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars. Digitally remastered by Kris Solem (1999, Future Disc). Call it the return of the prodigal son, as Vince Neil is restored to the mike stand after a one-album hiatus. GENERATION SWINE brings Motley Crue into the '90s by recasting their sound in the post-industrial mold of Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. The Crue try to revamp their image and sound by employing Skinny Puppy's Dave Ogilvie to mix half of the album and swapping their spandex and leather for black vinyl and nail polish in the booklet's photos. Swirling textures underpin everything from White Zombie-like crunch ("Let Us Prey") to an almost Primus-like title track. A reworking of a Crue favorite ("Shout At The Devil '97") features the band's trademark biting guitars, but the party boys of the '80s are all grown up now, as Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx write and sing about their wives and children in the sugary "Brandon" and the glammy "Rocketship." Yes
Yes: John Anderson (vocals, percussion); Peter Banks (guitar, background vocals); Tony Kaye (piano, organ); Chris Squire (bass, background vocals); Bill Bruford (drums, vibraphone). Recorded at Advision and Trident Studios, London, England in Spring 1969. Originally released on Atlantic (8243). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Though Yes's name quickly became synonymous with '70s prog rock, their 1969 debut is a far cry from the epic vistas they would later explore. Like many '60s bands, they covered the Byrds (the metaphysical "I See You") and the Beatles ("Every Little Thing"). Inspired by the likes of Vanilla Fudge and Rotary Connection, they turned these songs inside out, radically changing the tempos and creating their own elaborate arrangements. The end results often bore little similarity to the songs'original versions. Guitarist Peter Banks (who eventually formed the very Yes-like aggregation Flash with Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye) has a much less cerebral approach than his successor Steve Howe. Though not as facile, Banks is alternately subtle and jazzy ("I See You") and electrifyingly riff-oriented ("Looking Around"). All the elements that would soon make Yes a household name were already in place, but YES is the sound of a great band gearing up for greater things. It's nevertheless an ultimately substantive and satisfying debut. SKU: 1009777

Inheritance
Six-string slinger Adrian Legg performs true to stellar form on this 2004 release. As on many of his previous recordings, INHERITANCE is characterized by Legg's genre-hopping approach tothe guitar, blending bits of folk, classical, blues, and rock into a seamless aesthetic that thrills, lulls, and shows off Legg's prodigious technical skills. Beginning with the bright, groovy blues-bluegrass opener "Nefertiti--What a Sweetie.," INHERITANCE then swings through styles such as waltz ("A Waltz for Leah"), Cajun grunge ("More Fun in the Swamp"), Celtic ("Doublejigs"), and expansive ambient ("Psalm with No Words"). The focus of the album is Legg's acoustic guitar, although strings and a battery of effects accompany him at times, lending depth and dimension to his sound. For the most part, however, Legg lets his fingers work their magic, pulling off dazzling runs, funky syncopations, and delicate passages played with great feeling. Whether working a mesmerizing rhythmic pattern ("English Blue") or approximating open, cinematic landscapes ("Emneth"), Legg's music is varied and accomplished enough to appeal to listeners of many different stripes. And All That Could Have Been (Live) [PA]
Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor, Danny Lohner, Jerome Dillon, Charlie Clouser, Robin Finck. Engineers: Jon Lemon, Leo Herrera, Paul Forgues. Recorded between April & June 2000. Dispensing with typical live album cliches (exhausting interludes of roaring crowds, lengthy between-song banter), AND ALL THAT COULD HAVE BEEN is packed tightly, with a set that is distinctly NIN at their best. The 16 tracks mark Trent Reznor and company's first-ever live album release, opening with the stomping "Terrible Lie." A powerful combination of electronic and acoustic percussion adds dimension and raw energy that isn't usually explored in the one-man-band approach to recording NIN albums, especially on "Sin." Reznor's vocaldelivery is equal parts darkly poetic and at times like spitting razors, conveying all the pain, anger and displacement that NIN fans identify with on such a personal level. "March Of The Pigs" leads into a clever segue of "Piggy," enhanced with a funky shuffle courtesy of drummer Jerome Dillon. Dynamic musical and technological extremes coupled with Reznor's mantra-like choruses make AND ALL THAT COULD HAVE BEEN a must have for NIN disciples, and an excellent introduction for the curious fan who might otherwise see NIN as only a studio entity.
