24 Nights (Eric Clapton Live)
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, Phil Palmer (guitar); Jerry Portnoy (harmonica); Johnnie Johnson (piano); Greg Philinganes (keyboards, background vocals); Chuck Leavell (keyboards); Nathan East (bass, background vocals); Richard Cousins, Joey Spampinato (bass); Steve Ferrone, Jamie Oldaker (drums); Phil Collins (tambourine); Ray Cooper (percussion); Katie Kissoon, Tessa Niles (background vocals). Recorded live at The Royal Albert Hall, London in 1990 & 1991. Includes liner notes by Derek Taylor. Starting in 1987, Eric Clapton would traditionally take over London's Royal Albert Hall for a number of nights, putting together various themed sets. One show might be all blues while another might find him performing with an orchestra. The two-disc 24 NIGHTS takes four of these sets from the 1990 and 1991 performances, ably demonstrating how flexible Clapton's guitar playing is regardless of the setting. Disc one finds Slowhand playing a Cream-heavy set. On Clapton's blues band set he jams with heroes and friends such as Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan and Johnny Johnson on songs by Guy ("Watch Yourself"), Junior Wells ("Hoodoo Man") and Maceo Merriweather ("Worried Life Blues"). The 9-piece band opening up disc two essays numbers from JOURNEYMAN along with "Wonderful Tonight" and a Derek & The Dominos favorite, "Bell Bottom Blues." Things wrap up with Clapton backed by the aforementioned nonet and The Michael Kamen-led National Philharmonic Orchestra. Along with a version of "Hard Times" that does justice to Brother Ray's original, there's the instrumental "Edge Of Darkness." Taken from the Lethal Weapon movies Clapton scored with Kamen, it shows another side of Slowhandthat's usually buried under the deification he's shunned his whole life. SKU: 1006299

Breaking Hearts [Remastered]
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, keyboards); Davey Johnstone (vocals, guitar); Dee Murray (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Air Studios, Montserrat and 301 Studios, Sydney, Australia. In the early '80s, Elton John no longer dominated the singles and album charts the way he had during the previous decade. He was still hugely popular, but he was in the process of redefining himself as an artist when he released BREAKING HEARTS in 1984. Gone were the 12-inch platform heels, the outrageous costumes and wild stage antics, but his music hadn't really changed all that much. He still alternated chiefly between piano-based rock songs and melodic, emotional ballads, despite throwing in occasional new wave-sounding keyboards and other slick touches of the era. "Sad Songs (Say So Much)", the record's high-charting hit, sports a melody that is hard to dislodge from the mind, even after a single listen. The chugging opening track "Restless" has a gritty Rolling Stones feel, while "Who Wears These Shoes" has a soulful, springy backbeat that is reminiscent of Motown groups like the Supremes. On the title track, John demonstrates his ability to write simple, affecting ballads. Alternating between his low and high registers, he is accompanied only by piano and a few high, Beatle-esque background vocals. "Passengers" has a sea-shanty flavor, with its sing-song, call-and-response chorus. SKU: 1085569

1 Fille Et 4 Types
Pop megastar unleashes her first French-language album since 1998's 'S'Il Suffisait D'Aimer'. Written and performed with three giants of the French music scene - Jacques Veneruso, Erick Benzi and Gildas Arzel - it is chock-full of the usual polished, epic showmanship her fans have come to expect. This should appeal to her large French-speaking fanbase, which has been with her from the start - as a Quebecoise, Dion is a native Frenchspeaker. SKU: 1087866

Murder Ballads [Digipak]
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nick Cave (vocals); Mick Harvey, Blixa Bargeld (guitar); Conway Savage (keyboards); Martyn P. Casey (bass); Thomas Wydler (drums); Jim Sclavunos (percussion). Additional personnel: PJ Harvey, Kylie Minogue, Shane MacGowan (vocals); Anita Lane, Brian Hooper, Warren Ellis. Producers: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Tony Cohen, Victor Van Vugt. Recorded at Wessex Studios, London, England; Atlantis, Sing Sing and Metropolis Studios, Melbourne, England between 1993 and 1995. In his trademark bottomless voice, Nick Cave narrates one tragic, violent tale after another. In excruciating detail, he examines the fine apects of murder, varying viewpoints between victims and killers, and investigating the dialogue between them from many angles. MURDER BALLADS, his ninth release withthe Bad Seeds, is Cave at his most raw and lyrical. He delves unflinchingly into macabre territory with the backing of his band's spare, moaning, reverb-rich playing--by turns sweetly tuneful and disjointedly dirge-like. PJ Harvey assumes the role of a woman scorned on "Henry Lee," in which she describes stabbing to death the man who rejects her. Her story is interspersed with choruses of, "La la la la la/La la la la lee/A little bird lit down on Henry Lee," adding a sense of perverse humor to the ballad's bleakness. On "Where the Wild Roses Grow," a man kills his lover, explaining that "all beauty must die," and Kylie Minogue provides the innocent, breathy voice of the dead lover with a ghostly, haunting softness. Yet amid the troubling, startling brutality runs a sense of fragility and a poetic lyricism that makes these songs linger. SKU: 1000490

Luxury Liner (Remastered & Expanded)
Includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks. Personnel: Emmylou Harris (vocals, guitar); Nicolette Larson (vocals); Rodney Crowell, Albert Lee (guitar, background vocals); Brian Ahern, James Burton, Rick Cunha (guitar); Hank DeVito (pedal steel guitar); Mike Auldridge (dobro); Ricky Skaggs (fiddle, mandolin); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Glen D. Hardin (piano); Emory Gordy (bass); John Ware (drums); Fayssoux Starling, Herb Pedersen, Dianne Brooks, Dolly Parton (background vocals). Recorded at the Enactron Truck, Beverly Hills, California. Originally released on Warner Bros. (2998). LUXURY LINER, Emmylou Harris' third album, found Harris' Hot Band undergoing a major transformation. Quick-picking maestro Albert Lee replaced lead guitarist James Burton. And future mega-star Ricky Skaggs, fresh from a stint with bluegrass pioneers J.D. Crowe and the New South, also signed on, taking Rodney Crowell's place. The result was a different, but equally breathtaking, version of what was fast earning a reputation as country music's finest ensemble. Aside from the personnel changes, LUXURY LINER is a typical early Harris album, filled with wonderful songs and performedwith tons of feeling and tremendous skill. Harris takes mentor Gram Parson's title track and kicks it up a notch, allowing Lee to show off his trademark chops. Townes Van Zandt's "Pancho and Lefty" immediately follows and, while this isn't the recording of the song that topped the charts (Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard had a hit with it later), it clearly laid the blueprint for the blockbuster version. Other standout tracks on this uniformly excellent album include Chuck Berry's "C'est La Vie," the Louvin Brothers' "When I Stop Dreaming," and the Carter Family classic "Hello Stranger." SKU: 6549113

Walking With Thee
Clinic includes: AdeBlackburn (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Hartley (guitar, keyboards); Brian Campbell (bass, background vocals); Carl Turney (drums). Recorded at Parr Street Studios, Liverpool, England. WALKING WITH THEE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album. WALKING WITH THEE finds Clinic a long way from their debut INTERNAL WRANGLER. Where their first album found the UK band practicing a quirky eclecticism tinged with ironic humor, Clinic's second outing is a far more serious and single-minded affair. The closest reference point is Radiohead, no great surprise considering the presence of that band's producer Nigel Godrich behind the mixing board for a couple of cuts. Like Thom Yorke's lonely hearts club band, Clinic expresses alienation, dislocation, paranoia, and good old depression via disaffected but angst-riddled vocals, post-punk-inspired sonic deconstructions, and a healthy dose of weird sound effects. Still, WALKING WITH THEE could hardly be called KID B; one of Clinic's most distinctive aspects, featured prominently throughout, is the sax, harmonica, and melodica work, adding echoes of either a peppier Talk Talk or a really bummed out Augustus Pablo. The band creates its own world on this album, and while its probably a tad too creepy a place to live, you'll definitely want to visit. SKU: 1069936

Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha
Personnel includes: Kurupt, Warren G, Tray D, Snoop Dogg, Soopafly, Daz, LaToya, Roscoe, Dr. Dre, KRS-One. Producers include: Dr. Dre, Organized Noize, Outkast, Daz, Bink. THA STREETZ IZ A MUTHA is a solid outing from Dogg Pound member Kurupt, highlighted by a vast array of production styles. Beginning with Organized Noize's manic "I Call Shots" and Daz's "Loose Cannons," the album appears to take a cue from Ice Cube's seminal solo debut AMERIKKKA'S MOST WANTED, which utilized East Coast production (the Bomb Squad) as an original juxtaposition to the West Coast gangsta lyrics that flooded the speakers. As the album evolves, however, Kurupt's true West Coast colors--in hiscase, blue--begin to shine (see: "Who Ride Wit Us," "Neva Gonna Give It Up," and "Ya Can't Trust Nobody"). Lyrically, he continues to follow two paths: braggadocious word play with a gangsta slant, and brutal mysoginism. With the former, he succeeds; with the latter, he tends to grow tired and repetitious. Luckily, for Kurupt's sake, he's wisely chosen to scatter the musical and lyrical styles throughout, keeping listeners on their toes and interested for the duration. At more than 74 minutes, this is an impressive achievement. SKU: 1067655

Complete Greatest Hits, The
Initial pressings included a bonus DVD. THE VERY BEST OF includes a 46-page booklet with pictures and track information. The Eagles: Bernie Leadon (vocals, guitar, slide guitar, pedal steel guitar, banjo, mandolin); Don Felder (vocals, guitar, slide guitar, steel guitar, keyboards); Glen Frey, Joe Walsh (vocals, guitar, slide guitar, keyboards); Randy Meisner (vocals, guitar, guitarron, bass); Don Henley (vocals, drums, percussion); Timothy B. Schmit (vocals, bass). Producers: Glyn Johns, Bill Szymczyk, Eagles, Elliot Scheiner, Rob Jacobs. Compilation producer: The Eagles. Recorded between 1972 & 2003. "Hole In The World" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The Eagles' founders Don Henley and Glenn Frey were forthright in their desire to bring then-emerging country rock to new heights of commercial success. Formed in Los Angeles in 1971, they learned from their observations of the scene around them, and subsequently took their music to the top of the charts. They stayed there throughout the '70s, becoming synonymous with the sound of Southern California rock. The band's first hit was with a songby Jackson Browne, and their first album also included a cover of "Ol' 55" by Tom Waits, but the bulk of the material they're known for was penned by Henley and Frey. This two-disc set wisely expands the original VERY BEST OF collection with important album tracks that have also long been band staples and favorites (such as the aforementioned Waits tune and a number of other songs from their pre-platinum first three releases). As is often the common industry-wide practice, there's also a new song, "Hole in the World." SKU: 1088131

Caught In A Trap And I Can't Back Out... (Cause I Love You Too Much Baby)
Full title: Caught In ATrap And I Can't Back Out 'Cause I Love You Too Much, Baby. Personnel: Mark Eitzel (vocals, guitar); Kid Congo Powers (guitar); James McNew (bass); Steve Shelley (drums). The doyen of doom returns for another round of dread and self-effacement. Fortunately, that's just what we love the about the erstwhile leader of the American Music Club. In sharp contrast to its predecessor WEST, CAUGHT IN A TRAP consists mostly of solo acoustic-guitar-and-vocal recordings, and it is here that Eitzel shines brightest, his deep, husky voice resonating over his delicate, Nick Drake-like guitar patterns. Ballads dominate the album, pulling the listener in to Eitzel's private world of emotional disarray. A few friends enter the fray, as Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, Yo La Tengo bassist James McNew and Congo Norvell guitarist Kid Congo Powers back Eitzel on a few cuts. Instead of providing a breath of fresh air, though, the full-band tracks only intensify the angst and unrest at the heart of Eitzel's best work. An unremittingly dark album, even for Eitzel (which is saying something), CAUGHT IN A TRAP is nonetheless mesmerizing, and easily stands among his finest recordings. SKU: 3103430

Do I Speak For The World
Personnel: Gerald Levert (vocals, percussion); Eddie Levert Sr. (vocals); Darrell "Delite" Allamby (various instruments, background vocals); Tony Nicholas (guitar, keyboards, drum programming, sequencer); Butch Bonner (guitar); Igor Szwec, Emma Kummrow, Charlene Parker Jr. (violin); Davis Barnett (viola); Jennie Lorenzo (cello); Niles McKinney (Wurlitzer organ); Dwayne Moore (bass guitar); Eric Byous (drums); Gordon Chambers, A.G. Thomas, Mike City, Troy Taylor, Chanell Jones (background vocals); Trey Songz, The Levert Kids. As a member of the O'Jays, Gerald Levert's father, Eddie, was no stranger to social commentary, often taking a break from their confectionery songs of love and loss to issue strong statements on the state of the world. With DO I SPEAK FOR THE WORLD, Gerald reveals similar inclinations. While his ninth album is certainly amply stocked with sweet songs of seduction, it opens with much sharp-tongued analysis of weighty manners, going so far as to invite scholar-commentators Cornel West and Tavis Smiley for their input on a poetic interlude. On the inspirational, soul-searching opening track "Intro/Speak for the World," Levert supplies a wonderfully vulnerable take on a long list of issues on his mind, from the dangers around the world to his own moments of self-doubt. The striking "Crucify Me" follows, exposing a complex philosophy as Levert, a performer at the 2004 Democratic Convention, examines everything from school prayer to questionable wars. However, while Levert's heart is certainly poured into his political musings, his lover's notions are not ignored, as DO I SPEAK FOR THE WORLD contains plenty of tender, doleful ballads("Better to Talk It Out") and hearty pleas ("Lay You Down"), providing a beautifully balanced record. Elvis' Golden Records Vol.1
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); The Jordanaires (background vocals). Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott and Anne Fulchino. All tracks have been digitally remastered. From January 1956 to November 1957, Elvis Presley spent a phenomenal 51 weeks occupying the number 1 spot on the Billboard pop chart. With the possible exception of the Beatles, no pop artist before or since has so completely dominated American pop music. All of Elvis' hits from this period are collected on ELVIS' GOLDEN RECORDS, which was originally released in 1958 and subsequently reissued several times. The 1997 reissue is the best yet, benefiting from digital remastering and the addition of six tracks. Among the extra tracks are three recordings from Elvis' years at Sun Records, which allow GOLDEN RECORDS to present a more complete picture of Presley's trajectory from regional phenomenon to national superstar than it previously had. As for the records themselves, well, no amount of praise can adequatelydescribe the greatness of the twenty recordings collected here. Each stands among the best rock recordings of all time; together, they represent a crucial turning point in American pop music, heralding the beginning of the rock-and-roll era. GOLDEN RECORDS is the first in a series of five greatest hits albums released during Elvis' lifetime; each was remastered and reissued with additional tracks in 1997. SKU: 1001761

Hotel Paper
This is an Enhanced CD, which containsboth regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Michelle Branch (vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion); Sheryl Crow (vocals); Greg Wells (guitar, piano, Wurlitzer piano, organ, bass); John Leventhal (guitar, keyboards, bass); John Shanks (guitar, bass); Dave Navarro (guitar); Stuart Smith (mandolin); Ollie Goldstein (piano, keyboards, programming); Josh Abraham (keyboards, programming); Jamie Muhoberac, Patrick Warren (keyboards); Paul Bushell, Chris Chaney, Mike Elizondo, Dan Rothchild (bass); Kenny Aronoff, Brian McLeod, Shawn Pelton (drums); Luis Conte, Rick Depofi, Chris Reynolds (percussion); Jessica Harp (background vocals). Producers: John Shanks, John Leventhal, Josh Abraham, Greg Wells. Recorded at Henson Recording Studios, NRG Recording Studios and Rocket Carousel Studios, Los Angeles, California, and New York Noise, New York, New York. When Michelle Branch emerged with her hit debut album in 2001 she was just 17 years old. Having successfully managed the transition into her twenties, she sounds even more confident on the follow-up HOTEL PAPER. This is an album of panoramic pop; even though many of the songs here are based around simple guitar licks and sharp rhythms, most of them burst out into widescreen production by the time the chorus kicks in. "Are You Happy Now?" incorporates a percolating drum-and-bass feel (of the electronica variety) with anthemic rock guitar. Achieving a similar mix-and-match production effect, tricky acoustic guitar licks rub shoulders with snappy drum loops on "Love Me Like That," which features a guest appearance from Sheryl Crow. HOTEL PAPER is essentially a pop-rock album with some power-ballad tendencies. Nevertheless, the twangy, chugging "Breathe" is not the Faith Hill hit of the same name but could find its way onto a Hill or Shania album with no trouble at all, indicative of the inherent stylistic malleability of Branch's all-purpose songwriting. Someday My Blues Will Cover The Earth
His Name Is Alive includes: Lovetta Pippen (vocals); Warn Defever. Additional personnel includes: Fred Thomas (acoustic guitar, bass); Ida Pearl (violin); Zach Wallace (upright bass); Scott Goldstein (drums). Recorded between 1998 and 2000. Over the course of five "official" albums, His Name Is Alive has been through a number of stylistic changes. When you consider that the band's leader, the mind-bogglingly prolific Warn (nee Warren) Defever, has had plenty of opportunity to experiment on dozens of self-released albums, this evolution doesn't seem quite so surprising. This time out, Defever and his cohort, Lovetta Pippen (whose stunning voice really shines here), explore blues in much the way that they deconstructed soul on 1998's FT. LAKE. An abbreviated run-through of the Ellington/Fitzgerald classic "Solitude," replete with artificial vinyl pops and scratches, leads into "Write My Name in the Groove," the album's sonically massive but spacious-sounding masterpiece. Centered around Pippen's riveting, emotive voice and accompanied by pulsing beats and crystalline piano, the track sets up musical themes that echo throughout the album. Also of note is "Are We Still Married?" (reprised here from 1991's HOME IS IN THE HEAD) which swaps the original version's glittering electronic sparseness for a full-bodied gravity anchored by acoustic guitar, violin, and piano backing. An object lesson in sonic sculpture, SOMEDAY is a modern blues manifesto and the band's finest record to date. SKU: 6548876

Includes liner notes by Ron O'Brien. Digitally remastered by Doug Schwart. The 1998 Lynyrd Skynyrd compilation THE ESSENTIAL follows for the most part the same set-up as its 1979 set, GOLD AND PLATINUM, the two discs both collecting the best tracks Skynyrd recorded during its original run from 1973-1977. But what makes the two sets different is the inclusion of several rarities--demo versions of "Four Walls of Raiford" and "Comin' Home," as well as an unplugged version of "All I Can Do Is Write About It." Add to this such Skynyrd classics as "Sweet Home Alabama," "Gimme Three Steps," "What's Your Name," "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller," "Freebird," and "Tuesday's Gone," and you have another solid career overview of these Southern rock co-founders. Blue Bash
This 1999 reissue contains six bonus tracks not on the original release. Personnel: Kenny Burrell (guitar); Jimmy Smith (organ); George Duvivier, Milt Hinton (bass); Bill English, Mel Lewis (drums). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Ben Young. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on July 16, 1963; Bell Sound Studios, New York, New York on July 25, 1963; A&R Recording, New York, New York on July 29, 1963. Includes liner notes by Michael Ullman and Del Shields. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios). This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. This auspicious recording started out almost as an afterthought. Jimmy Smith was in the midst of making his excellent big-band album ANY NUMBER CAN WIN when he stepped into a couple of New York studios with old pal Kenny Burrell and a rhythm section to quickly cut the sides that became BLUE BASH. The air of spontaneity is certainly present here, as Burrell and Smith use the common language of the blues to move through a varied program. An appropriately simmering version of the Peggy Lee hit "Fever" finds Smith at his most sensual. The upbeat, Burrell-penned "Travelin'" has something of a gospel jubilee feel, along the lines of "When the Saints Go Marching In,"and Burrell's joyous lines makes the most of the celebratory mood. The standard "Easy Living" finds the fiery Smith in an uncommonly wistful mode, contributing blissful, pretty organ runs over Burrell's lush harmonies. The revealing bonus tracks, almost another album's worth of material, shed further light on the interaction between the musicians, revealing both endearing flubs and previously unheard gems. Songs Of Sanctuary
Personnel: Karl Jenkins (conductor); Miriam Stockley (vocals); Robert St. John Wright (concertmaster); Pamela Thorby (recorder); Mike Taylor (quena); Frank Ricotti, Jody Barratt Jenkins (percussion); Mary Carewe (background vocals); The London Philharmonic. Recorded at Angel Recording Studios, Islington, London. The work of European composer Karl Jenkins, the Adiemus debut SONGS OF SANCTUARY is one of those late 20th century musical triumphs whose success came, oddly enough, through a Delta Airlines TV commercial in which the track "Adiemus" was featured. The exposure resulted in hefty sales for this initial Adiemus collection and ensured further releases. The musicis grounded in Western classical structure but features a vocal technique drawn from Africa and executed exuberantly by a chorus of young children as well as the South African singer Miriam Stockley. Aside from the occasional line of Latin, there are few lyrics. Rather, the vocalists recite phonetic sounds, resulting in an album that can be understood and appreciated by many. SKU: 1002347

Rhythm Of Love
Personnel includes: Anita Baker (vocals, piano, synthesizer); Michael Thompson, Dean Parks, Ira Siegel (guitar); Barry J. Eastmond (strings, piano, Fender Rhodes, keyboards, programming); Joe Mardin (strings, keyboards, drums, programming); Andy Snitzer (saxophone); Jerry Hey (trumpet); Louis Resto (piano, Fender Rhodes, synthesizers, programming); Nathan East, Anthony Jackson (bass); Steve Ferrone (drums); Bashiri Johnson (percussion); Gordon Chambers (background vocals). Producers include: Anita Baker, Tommy LiPuma, Gerard Smerek, Barry J. Eastmond, Arif Mardin. Engineers include: Gerard Smerek, Al Schmitt, Randy Poole. "I Apologize" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. "Body And Soul" was nominated for 1995 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song, and RHYTHM OF LOVE was nominated for Best R&B Album. Out of sight, out of mind is the rule in popular music, so you'd have thought that during the four years Anita Baker stepped back from the recording industry to have a family, her popularity would have subsided. But radio never stopped playing her rapturous love songs, primary colors of the new romanticism. With RHYTHM OF LOVE, Anita Baker reclaims her quiet storm torch from descendants such as Toni Braxton. The rich ornaments and expressive vibrato of her bass range evoke images of Sarah Vaughan, while she demonstrates a breathy,horn-like fluency in the upper registers. In calling upon keyboard masters Joe Sample and George Duke, Baker has arrived at a fresh blend of jazz lyricism and R&B phrasing on standards such as "My Funny Valentine" and "Sometimes I Wonder Why," and a shuffling contemporary take on Burt Bacharach's "The Look Of Love" (from the film "Casino Royale"). Still, it's Anita Baker's pleading contralto that delights her fans most. "Plenty Of Room" is a quintessential power ballad that benefits from a subtle blend of rock and gospel touches, while the new single "Body And Soul" (not to be confused with the jazz standard) is a classic devotional torch song, full of virtuoso vocal turns and emotional peaks---proving that her voice has lost none of its opulent allure.
